Democrats Must Ace The Agenda Test

I

n last week’s Democratic National Convention, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris passed the character test.

Now as Trump rolls out his virtual convention, they must ace the agenda test. They need to argue the case for the bold agenda that this country desperately needs, and challenge Trump for his policy failures.

The Democratic National Convention focused on the character test. Speaker after speaker contrasted the decency of Joe Biden against what Trump’s own sister called the “phoniness” of Donald Trump, a man she said of “no principles, none.”

The convention introduced Kamala Harris to the country, highlighting her remarkable journey from the child of immigrants, the student at Howard University, California Attorney General and senator to the presidential ticket. Jill Biden demonstrated her commitment to family and to teaching.

The convention displayed the character of the party -- its diversity, its inclusiveness, its concern for justice. In powerful presentations, Michelle and Barack Obama made the case about why Trump is just not up to the job of president, particularly in a time of crisis.

“It is what it is,” as Michelle concluded.

That left little time to address the agenda. It’s not that it does not exist.

The Democratic platform -- largely a product of the task forces put together

by Biden and Bernie Sanders -- details a broad, progressive agenda for change.

Biden’s own web page and speeches over the course of the nominating process have presented elements of his program. But no one but political junkies read party platforms, and few probe candidate websites. It is now up to Biden and Harris to lay out their case -- and contrast it with Trump’s failed administration.

The priorities are clear. In the immediate short-term, Trump’s

catastrophic mismanagement of the pandemic must be replaced by a comprehensive national strategy to get the pandemic under control so lives are saved and the economy can start up again.

The 30 million people who have been forced onto unemployment -- disproportionately lower wage workers, disproportionately black and Hispanic -need immediate assistance. Trump and the Republican Senate stood in the way of the needed rescue package, objecting to continuing the $600 a week enhancement to unemployment insurance, aid to the U.S. Postal Service to manage the expected surge in voting by mail, aid to cities and states facing massive layoffs of police, teachers, transit workers and more after their budgets were busted by the economic collapse and the costs of dealing with the pandemic.

Already another round of layoffs is expected, and 20 to 30 million families are threatened with eviction or foreclosure in a pandemic. Schools are struggling with reopening without the resources needed to pay for the protections health officials say are necessary.

Yet Trump and McConnell refused even to meet Democratic House leaders halfway to get a bill done.

In the longer run, major changes are needed to make this economy work for working people.

We need a bold initiative to rebuild America’s infrastructure and make it sustainable, a transition to renewable energy to fend off already costly climate change and create millions of good jobs.

We need major investment in science and technology so America can regain its lead in innovation and job growth. We need a new trade strategy and industrial policy that rebuilds good jobs at home, ensures we make essential products here in the U.S., and demands a balanced playing field from China and other countries that trample trading

rules.

At the same time, we need to ensure that workers gain a fair share of the profits and productivity that they help generate. Biden has promised to lift the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

We need to empower workers to organize and crack down on labor rights abuses by corporate managers. The economic bill of rights for essential workers should be detailed and readied for passage. Paid family leave and sick leave is vital. Affordable, high-quality child care essential for working parents and their children.

The health care gap must be closed, with affordable health care for all guaranteed. The education gap must be closed, with resources for public schools from pre-K through college.

Biden has promised tuition-free education for all students whose families earn less than $125,000 a year in contrast to Trump’s lack of concern for the burden mounting student debt. The wealth gap must be addressed, with progressive taxes helping to reverse the extreme inequality that now threatens our democracy.

We must address the constitutional right to vote. The right to vote should be protected, with restoration of the Voting Rights Act, automatic voter registration, expanded vote by mail and

early voting, an end to partisan gerrymandering, and limits on big money in politics. Biden should support the constitutional amendment to guarantee the right to vote in America.

The systemic racism built into our criminal justice system must be redressed. Equal pay for women should no longer be an issue.

The priorities are many. Biden and Harris must be aggressive in putting forth their agenda, explaining its import and defending its elements. Trump has already made it clear that his campaign will be based on lies and libels about the Democratic agenda. He has already called Biden the “puppet of the radical left,” who wants to “defund the police “and “abolish the suburbs.” He’ll burlesque the Democratic agenda across the country. It is vital that Biden and Harris argue their case. If they do, there is no question that they will ace the agenda test that Trump has already failed. They have little more than two months to get that done.

Mayor Sylvester Turner and Microsoft Expand Digital Alliance With The City Of Houston

ech company will invest in workforce development as part of “accelerate” initiative and support Houston’s innovation district at the Ion

Mayor Sylvester Turner announced on Monday that the city of Houston has expanded its groundbreaking digital alliance with Microsoft to innovate in big data, artificial intelligence and the digital economy.

Microsoft brings to Houston “Accelerate,” a new program designed to address economic recovery through skilling both underserved communities and re-skilling the many Americans impacted by COVID-19.

The collaboration is intended to create new economic opportunity, close equity and digital skills gaps, and prepare a workforce for the 21st century.

“Microsoft launched the Accelerate program at a time when closing the digital divide has never been more important,” said Kate Johnson, president of Microsoft U.S. “We’re thrilled to be joining Mayor Turner and an impressive group of partners in this effort to expand access to in-demand digital skills—and close digital skills gaps widened by COVID-19—through Accelerate: Houston.”

The mayor was joined by Jacky Wright, chief digital officer, Microsoft U.S., to announce details of the Houston Innovation Alliance and Accelerate: Houston. Other partners supporting the alliance include The Ion, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Kino-Eye Center, Upskill Houston, University of Houston College of Technology and Space Center Houston.

“More than two years ago, I announced our first transformative alliance with Microsoft — the first of its kind in the United States,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Today, I am pleased to say we are taking another leap toward strengthening Houston’s global standing as a center for innovation and technology.”

J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Initial Quality Study Ranks Hyundai Tucson and Veloster Tops in their Segments T

he J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS) ranked Hyundai Tucson as the best compact SUV in initial quality today. The Hyundai Veloster also earned the top score in the compact sporty car vehicle segment.

Additional vehicles in Hyundai’s lineup performed well, with Accent and Elantra both finishing second in their respective segments, while Santa Fe was third.

“Outperforming the best vehicles in a segment is always a major milestone for Hyundai,” said Barry Ratzlaff, chief customer officer, Hyundai Motor America. “These accomplishments are a testament to the entire company’s dedication, including design, engineering, manufacturing, service, field teams and our dealer partners, to deliver the highest quality vehicles to our customers.”

The 2020 U.S. Initial Quality Study is based on responses from 87,282 purchasers and lessees of new 2020 model-year vehicles who were surveyed after 90 days of ownership. avaeh Richardson is the recipient of The Dr. Andrew Arthur Allen, Sr. Memorial Scholarship made possible by Emancipation Park Conservancy and Dr. Allen’s daughter, award winning actress, singer, stage director, Houston native and Howard University alumna, Phylicia Rashad.

To be eligible for this one-time, $5,000 scholarship, students had to be a 2020 Yates High School graduate planning to enter their freshman year at Howard University during the Fall 2020 semester.

“Our family is honored to have a scholarship named after our father, Dr. Andrew Arthur Allen, whose first office was just across the street from Emancipation Park,” said Phylicia Rashad.

Ms. Richardson is a 2020 Yates High School graduate and incoming Howard University freshman with plans to major in media journalism and film, with a minor in fine arts photography.

She graduated from Yates in the top 5% of her class with a 4.0 GPA and was ranked number seven out of 147 seniors. She served as member and vice-president of the National Honor Society and section leader in the Yates High School Band where she played both the mellophone and trumpet.

Her photography was featured in the Museum of Fine Arts Houston from 2017-2020 as part of the Eye of Third Ward exhibit, depicting her perspective

of the historic Third Ward Community.

She was also an active participant of the EMERGE Fellowship and spent time volunteering at the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, Word on the Street Ministries, and Institute for Psychological Services. While at Howard, Ms. Richardson hopes to continue to serve others by teaching middle and high school students about photography, while also encouraging students to connect, serve and build relationships with the community surrounding the university.

“We pride ourselves on being the center of the community and that means being a resource while also giving back to the community we serve.

We are thrilled that with the help of the amazing and talented Phylicia Rashad, we were able to provide this scholarship to assist Naveah with her college education,” said Ramon Manning, board chairman of Emancipation Park Conservancy.

hese are critical times in which we find ourselves. Besides living during this global pandemic, race relations are boiling over, immigrations issues continue to rip families apart, healthcare is not available for all, and issue after issue keeps mounting with more frustrations and less of viable solutions. America is in deep turmoil.

Many citizens live and breathe today in a state of unrest. They are uneasy about the life of their children, relatives and themselves making this election one of the most important. Voting like our lives depend on it is not a sound bite, a good campaign slogan, or empty words.

This quite literally is one of the truest statements of this election.

Out of all the rights granted to American citizens the one that should be the most cherished and protected is that of the right to vote. Being able to have the right to raise one’s voice in deciding who will represent your thoughts and ideas in government is one of the purest forms of justice there is.

The history of voting started with no clear rules regarding eligibility.

Voting power was granted by the states with most white men having the right to vote. As time passed, clear voting eligibility criteria was drafted making the right to vote a form of legal segregation prohibiting women and nonwhite men from voting. There would be many who fought, marched, cried, spoke up, and got knocked down before real voting reform took place.

August would become a very important month in regard to the issue of voting. Prior to the passage of The Voting Rights Act of 1965, there was the Selma to Montgomery marches. A number of nonviolent activists organized the marches along the 54-mile stretch of highway to protest the rights for African Americans to vote from March 7-21, 1965. The first march became known as Bloody Sunday for all the blood that was shed by the marchers from getting beat with billyclubs and having tear gas thrown on them. The late Congressman

John Lewis thought he would have died as a result of his participation in the march. But he would go on and be a strong advocate for civil rights. The efforts of the many were not in vain as the Voting Rights Act was signed on August 6, 1965, and discriminatory election processes were removed that once held women and minorities back. However, those rights would be threatened in 2013 by a ruling of the Supreme Court ending protections that the original legislation protected.

Another historic August date would be August 26, 1920, when women were granted the right to vote by the passage of the 19th amendment. But this legislation did not include women of color. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 did fix that problem. This year we celebrate the centennial anniversary of the woman’s right to vote.

Voting has always been and will always be an important right for every American. But so many refuse to go vote. Whether it is because they don’t like the candidates, they find it too difficult, or they plain just don’t want to do so, I implore everyone to go vote. If you don’t vote, don’t complain. If you don’t vote, don’t request better because you had a chance to do so but you wasted the opportunity. If you don’t vote, don’t cry out for help. If you don’t at least try to effect change with your vote, why be part of any of the processes that follow.

Good thing about this current time is that you still have time to make your voice heard in this election. As of this week, we are approximately 40 days away from October 5th (the deadline to register to vote), 43 days away from October 13 (the start of early voting), and 69 days from November 3rd (Election Day).
