Trump’s Disgraceful Assault On The USPS and Americans

L

agging in the polls, Donald Trump has launched a campaign to discredit the upcoming election and disparage the United States Postal Service. He’s repeated the utterly baseless claim that voting by mail -- the safest way to vote in a pandemic -- will lead to massive fraud. He’s opposed aid to states that would help prepare for massive vote by mail and blocked the $25 billion the United States Postal Service needs to make up for lost revenue in the pandemic. His intent is clear, alleging that without the money, “you can’t have universal mail-in voting because they are not equipped to have it.” Trump has even suggested that ballots that are cast before election day but not received until after Election Day should not be counted. Since polls show his supporters are more likely to vote in person and Democratic voters more likely to vote by mail, Trump may believe that sowing panic about voting by mail may enable him to steal an election he would otherwise lose.

This assault on the USPS and the election is disgraceful and dishonest. In reality, voting by mail has been used by millions of voters, including President Trump and his family, who routinely vote by mail. Thirty-one million votes were cast by mail in 2018 with no evidence of meaningful fraud.

Moreover, if -- and that’s a big IF -- allowed to do its work, the US Postal Service can easily handle the surge of mail that might result from 150 million Americans choosing to vote by mail this fall rather than vote in person. As Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union reported on my radio show, the Postal Service routinely

handles 500 million pieces of mail a day. Around Christmas, that surges to more than 600 million a day, with postal workers pushing to get cards delivered in time for the holiday. With over 30,000 post offices across the country, postal workers, essential workers in the pandemic, take their mission -- to bind the nation together and render postal services to all communities -- seriously.

That’s why the post office consistently enjoys overwhelming support from Americans across the political spectrum.

The only question is whether Trump, the Republican Senate, and Trump’s postmaster general and aides will succeed in sabotaging the Post Office so it can’t do its job.

In recent weeks, Louis DeJoy, Trump’s postmaster general, a multi-millionaire in office for little more than a month, imposed a series of “reforms” -- without consultation with postal workers, customers or local communities -- that are slowing the delivery of the mail. These include cutting back hours, eliminating overtime, removing mail processing equipment and mailboxes. With the Postal Service already understaffed, the result is to delay the mail. This endangers not only votes cast by mail, but the delivery of medication to seniors and veterans, the delivery of Social Security checks and much more.

The USPS has now announced that it won’t treat votes by mail as priority mail without first class postage and informed 46 states that, under their current deadlines, it can’t guarantee delivery of mailed in ballots in time to be counted.

ger-term Republican plans. The Trump administration has announced that it wants to privatize the Postal Service, selling off pieces to private companies. DeJoy, with multimillion-dollar investments in private competitors to the Post Office, has both financial and ideological interest in doing just that.

Republicans have forced the Post Office to prepay its pension obligations -something no other company or agency in the country is forced to do -- in order to cripple its ability to finance its own operations. Delaying service of the mail is a feature of their plan, not a bug.

Similarly, Republican efforts to suppress the vote aren’t limited to Trump’s blatant assault on voting by mail. Republicans have amassed a war chest of $20 million to array legions of lawyers to fight against any efforts to make registration or voting more accessible. They’ve lined up thousands of volunteers to harass and intimidate voters at the polls. The head of a minority party, Trump stated the obvious, saying that if everyone could vote, Republicans would never be elected.

This disgraceful assault on our democracy and on our postal service is already meeting resistance. Demonstrators paraded in front of DeJoy’s private residence in Washington, D.C., House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is convening the House to grill DeJoy on his actions, and to pass standalone legislation to block any changes in operation that would delay delivery of the mail. Passage will require Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell and the Republican Senate majority to stand up for a safe election in the pandemic.

ing pressure across the country, with demonstrations at post offices in support of the service, with calls to legislators demanding action, with pressure on state and local election officials to provide the resources needed for more drop-off boxes, more hours of early voting, more polling places. LeBron James and the LA Dodgers are opening up Dodger Stadium to allow voters to vote at a safe distance. Every professional, college and high school stadium should join in this effort to ensure that voting is safe.

And we need to vote in large numbers and early. If voting by mail, mail your ballot in early or take it to a drop-off box to ensure delivery. Don’t wait for November; cast it before October 25. If voting in person, vote early to avoid long lines on Election Day. Make certain you know where your precinct is -- Republicans have been eliminating precincts, and election officials have been closing polling places, particularly in black and brown communities.

Trump is afraid that if Americans vote in large numbers -- particularly people of color whom he has continually insulted -- he will lose. We must act now to overcome whatever obstacles he erects to make that fear come true.

1,000 Harris County Department Of Education Head Start Preschoolers Begin Virtually

arris County Department of Education Head Start teacher Lois Rose has one hard-and-fast rule in her pre-k classroom, be it virtual or in-person.

“We take care of each other,” Rose said.

As 145 HCDE Head Start teachers and teacher assistants start school virtually Sept. 8 with their students, they begin the year getting to know each other.

A slate of class rules follows.

No running or hitting. Take care of others. Rose expects challenges, but she has big plans for the students in her virtual classroom.

HCDE operates 14 Head Start sites and has Early Head Start programs at three of those sites, as well as four additional childcare partnership sites. In total, the program provides comprehensive services for 1,060 families of children ages 6 weeks to 5 years in northeast Harris County. Plans are for in-person classes to resume as COVID-19 numbers decline, HCDE Head Start Senior Director Venetia Peacock said.

Teachers use Frog Street pre-k curriculum for both Head Start and Early Head Start. Curriculum is aligned to Texas pre-k guidelines and Head Start early learning outcomes. Teachers are using the Microsoft Teams to meet virtually with students and parents.

“We know that many of our families have other children, so we don’t want to overwhelm them,” Jones-Lee said. “Family service providers see the challenges families are facing and they relate those back to us. Coping with COVID-19 is enough. We want to do what is best for their families.”

Two synchronous or live sessions will be held twice a week for 45 minutes each with the pre-k learners and their parents.

“On a virtual day, parents pick a time frame for class which fits their schedule best, and students attend live sessions,” Jones-Lee said. Outdoor time, music and movement time and art projects are sent to parents as supplemental activities.

Homework packets are picked up Mondays through a drive-through system along with meals made available three days a week. Teachers connect through a wave and a smile.

“Mondays are very important because they enable teachers to touch based and greet students and parents to

maintain human contact through safe, social distancing,” Peacock said.

At Early Head Start centers with the infants and toddlers, sessions are one-on-one with families and allow for modeling learning activities with parents first. Later, students join in the sessions and feedback is given by teachers and their assistants.

Home visits allow parents to see what virtual learning will look like.

Teachers can tour student home life virtually and get to know the family.

“Home visits allow parents and teachers to set goals,” Jones-Lee said.

Families have generally been very supportive of virtual instruction, she explained. Collectively, virtual learning is important for families because they want their preschoolers to have the social and academic skills to be ready for kindergarten.

Lessons for the pre-k students include a social-emotional component along with literacy and math. A class on friendship allows children to learn about themselves and their family relationships.

During the pandemic, Head Start staff are especially attuned to the social-emotional needs of students.

“So, if a parent relates any kind of learning or social-emotional challenge to the teacher or family service provider, there may be a referral of the child to a specialist or mental

Back in the classroom, Rose sees her virtual classroom as an open house of sorts. Last spring, parents would join into Zoom sessions to see what their children were learning and view classroom structure.

When her 4-year-olds get fidgety in the virtual classroom, the tactics are much the same as the regular class.

“We stop and do something fun that they like and then get them back on track again,” Rose said.

Calling it “a blessing” to have a new class of students, the Head Start teacher at the HCDE Fifth Ward Head Start Center is eager to get to know her students and set expectations.

“It will be different,” Rose jests.

“We will need to do thumbs up instead of high fives.”

ayor Sylvester Turner announced this week that applications for the City of Houston’s Small Business Economic Relief Program (SBERP) will open at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19th.

The program, which is funded with $15 million of the City’s allocated CARES Act 2020 funds, will provide immediate and short-term grant assistance to small businesses and chambers of commerce that have been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Application deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, September 4th and must be completed online at: w w w. c i t y o f h o u s t o n - s b e r p . o r g.

The maximum amount a business or chamber can receive from the SBERP is $50,000. A business may use the funds for payroll, accounts payable, rent, mortgage, personal protective equipment (PPE) for employees, and marketing strategies, including creating an online presence and other sales alternatives.

“SBERP funds will not be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Small businesses that are in most financial need and exhibit a moderate to high likelihood of surviving the pandemic’s adverse impacts will receive the most consideration for grant funds,” Mayor Turner said. “I highly encourage you to take your time to complete your application fully and carefully before the September 4th deadline.”

To qualify for the SBERP, business owners must meet the following requirements: · Must be a business whose

principal place of business is located within city limits of the City of Houston.

espite this moment of racial turmoil, health uncertainty and economic hardship, the Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. awarded $121,700 scholarships this year. These funds reduced the financial burden for more than 50 recent high school graduates and current college students.

The organization recognized scholarship winners in a virtual ceremony during May Week, which is an annual observance highlighting academic and professional achievements that emphasize the importance of higher education.

As an organization deeply rooted in public service with a focus on the Black community, the scholarship funds were distributed at a critical time of need for

recipients.

“COVID-19 has had a devastating effect on the Black community.

African Americans are dual survivors of the disproportionate health impacts of the coronavirus and an inequitable vulnerability to job loss or pay reduction,” said Jona Sargent, President of the Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. “Due to the increased financial burden of COVID-19, many families are worried about whether or not they can send their student to college or keep them there. As such, this year we strived to increase our award amounts.”

Recent scholarship funds were raised at the sorority’s 18th Annual Jazz Soirée Scholarship Fundraiser held in

December 2019 in partnership with One Delta Plaza Educational Center (ODPEC). With the $121,700 raised during the sorority’s Jazz Soirée and from members and community partner-funded donations, 37 high school students and six college students received scholarship funding. The sorority also distributed eight $500 laptop gift cards to graduating high school seniors who participated in Houston Alumnae’s enrichment programs: EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) and Dr. Jeanne L. Noble GEMS (Growing &, Empowering Myself Successfully).

Seventeen of the 29 colleges where awarded students plan to attend or are currently enrolled are Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs).

Others intend to matriculate at schools such as University of Houston, University of Southern California, Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University.

Dining Out At Home During The Pandemic With Uber Eats

taying home is our new normal for now and many of us have been absent from some of our favorite eating spots. Sadly, some of these establishments have folded up permanently. Additionally, the food festivals, media Invites, and packed Indoor seating cease to exist at this moment.

On the bright side, Uber Eats and other food delivery services have expanded their services to include many more restaurants. Also, with the increased demand for deliveries, more drivers have been added to the team

to keep the food traffic moving. I met several new drivers that had been laid off from other jobs that are now staying busy with Uber Eats. Most, seem to be happy with the freedom it afforded them, as well as having a little extra income.

My co-workers and I are partial to Uber Eats because we have tried other good services, but Uber seemed to offer more of the choices that we enjoy. Like most who use the delivery apps, we have learned to stick to the places that are near us distance wise, which keeps our waiting time very short. In fact, we have found a new “favorite” Mexican establishment called Raizes Mexican Kitchen, located at 345 Dulles Avenue in Stafford, Texas.

We are now repeat customers, and my favorite dish so far has been the Beef Nachos, which I refer to as “macho nachos”.

My co-workers prefer the tacos, chicken, and beef

fajita.

The photo included in this article shows my first order from Raizes, I couldn’t believe huge the serving was, plus the flavor was amazing.

The chips were crisp, hot, and freshly made. The re-fried beans were tasty and well-seasoned. The meat was plentiful, tender, lean, and loaded with just the right amount of spices. The chili con queso was drizzled on evenly throughout the dish but did not make the chips soggy. The plating was neat and pleasing to the eyes. My food was packed well, not a drop spilled on the side or appeared as if it had traveled anywhere.

Most importantly, the driver protected his hands and face by wearing

gloves and a mask.

Finally, we are pleased that we are able to support our local restaurants and our local economy by being able to dine-out safely at home while enjoying delicious food.

his past week the Southwestern Athletic Conference made a move to try to bring some sense of normalcy back to its 10 football programs.

They announced the league’s 2021 spring football schedule

Each SWAC team will play six conference football games to include four games against division opponents and two games against non-division opponents. Every member institution will also have the option to play one non-conference game.

Week one will begin February 27th with notable games such as Texas Southern traveling to Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Prairie View A&M facing Grambling State in the State Fair Classic.

Week Two will have both instate schools in Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern facing off against each other. It won’t have the same feel as the first weekend in September, but the rivalry still means the same no matter when the game is played.

The conference-wide slate includes one non-conference open date for each team and conference contests scheduled each week beginning in Week One. Additionally, the league has designated a bye week for each team during the week of March 13 to ensure that fans and supporters have the opportunity to attend the Cricket Wireless Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments (March 9-13).

seeded team at the conclusion of regular season play. SWAC football teams are scheduled to begin preparation for the season with an eight-week training period beginning in January.

“The SWAC Council of Presidents and Chancellors, Sports Administrators Committee, COVID-19 Advisory Committee, along with our fall sports scheduling groups have worked tirelessly over recent months to get to the point where we are able to announce a significant part of the rescheduling of our fall sports,” said SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland.

“Collectively as a conference, we look forward to continuing on the path to a safe return to competition that we know all of our student-athletes, team staff, institutional administrators, and supporters would like to see in the coming months. This schedule allows the needed flexibility for any additional adjustments that will need to be made once the NCAA releases its revised spring calendar. Clearly, our plans in

regards to the safe return to competition within our league will ultimately be dictated by the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic in the respective regions of our member institutions.”

The SWAC will continue to work with local and state medical experts along with governmental officials to gather additional information, evaluate emerging data and advancements while monitoring new developments regarding the pandemic.
