Donald Trump, Again, Fails To Lead

D

onald Trump’s ignorance and incompetence have cost American lives in the pandemic. Now his failure of leadership will add to the misery of millions of Americans force onto unemployment, the hunger of children at risk, the homelessness of families facing eviction. At a time when bold action is imperative, the president offers posturing and gestures. Having failed to produce a deal on a much-needed rescue program, he issues a showtime executive order and series of memoranda that will do more to foster confusion than to aid those in distress.

“The Lord and the Founding Fathers created executive orders because of partisan bickering and divided government,” White House economic adviser Peter Navarro said on NBC News on Sunday. But don’t blame the Lord for the absence of leadership.

A forceful leader would have convened the leaders of the House and Senate in his office and forced an agreement before letting them go home.

By all accounts, they were close enough to get a deal. Democratic leaders Pelosi and Schumer had offered a compromise in the middle between the bill the House passed that would cost about $3.4 trillion and the bill Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell cobbled together that would cost $1 trillion and that he couldn’t get his own caucus to support. No bill could pass without Democratic votes in the House and the Senate, yet Trump’s representatives wouldn’t even go halfway.

By all accounts the sticking points were that the administration wasn’t prepared to sign off on continued enhanced unemployment benefits of $600 a week, was inalterably opposed to helping the post office and states prepare for the November elections, and refused to support aid to states and localities.

The latter is truly perverse since the

pandemic shutdown collapsed revenues and increased costs creating deficits that states are mandated to eliminate. That has already forced 1.5 million layoffs with more to come. At the very time that Trump is demanding the states take responsibility for managing the pandemic, when opening schools safely requires large investments in facilities, protective equipment and staffing, the administration wants to force states to layoff teachers, police and fire fighters, and more.

Instead of forcing agreement, Trump absented himself from the negotiations. When they collapsed, he offered little but political posturing.

He claimed that his executive order and memorandums would “take care of, pretty much, this entire situation,” but they were in fact more show than go.

He said he’d order payment of $400 a week in enhanced unemployment benefits through December 6, but the resources he drew on - with questionable legality - will support them only for little more than a month. And that includes requiring the very states he just stiffed to ante up a quarter of the cost, which few will be able to afford.

He claimed he’d sustain the federal moratorium on foreclosures and evictions, but his executive order didn’t do that. It simply called on the Department of Health and Human Services to “consider” whether it is necessary to temporarily halt evictions. More than 20 million families are now at risk of eviction and homelessness in the midst of the pandemic. He promised to defer student loan and interest payments, but that won’t leave students any less in debt.

His final political pander was the most dangerous. He announced he would defer - not forgive - payroll taxes - the contributions to Social Security and Medicare -- for Americans with jobs

from September 1 to the end of the year.

Workers would still owe the taxes, but Trump said he would try to “terminate” the taxes if “I win in November.”

That cynical promise adds only insult to injury. The deferral offers no help to the unemployed. It leaves the workers on the hook for taxes that are put off. It undermines the financing of Social Security and Medicare, at a time when the elderly are particularly at risk.

And it offers a campaign promise that Republicans in the Senate have already rejected.

This isn’t a reality TV show. We can’t afford a vaudeville president. We need leadership in the face of a real and present danger. Many voters have been willing to overlook Trump’s divisive racial posturing, his lies and insults, his mismanagement and corruption on the theory that he at least would shake things up.

Now, the human casualties caused by the absence of real leadership are mounting. Mismanagement of the pandemic costs lives. Failure to lead in addressing the economic calamity will

cost more job loss, homelessness, and spreading misery.

Trump announced his showtime executive orders at his private golf club in Bedminster before an adoring audience of cleated golf shoe clad, white members straight from the 19th hole.

Although not immune from the virus, for the most part they can afford the amusement. It is the front line workers, those who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, the elderly and the vulnerable, the African Americans and Latinx who are disproportionate victims of the virus who will suffer most from this folly. They were not in attendance at the president’s show.

Sumner Redstone Redstone,, Billionaire Media Mogul, Dead At 97 Starting With A Chain of Drive-In Theaters, Mr. Redstone Negotiated, Sued And Otherwise Fought To Amass A Domain That Included CBS and Viacom

umner Redstone, a media titan and billionaire who, as chairman of Viacom and National Amusements, drew headlines both for his deal-making as well as his turbulent personal life, died on Tuesday. He was 97.

Beginning with a modest chain of drive-in movie theaters, Mr. Redstone negotiated, sued and otherwise fought to amass holdings that over time included CBS, the Paramount film and television studios, the publisher Simon & Schuster, the video retail giant Blockbuster and a host of cable channels, including

MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon. At their peak, the businesses were worth more than $80 billion.

At his peak, Redstone’s sprawling empire included CBS and Viacom (VIACA), corporations that were the parents of a host of subsidiaries ranging from Paramount Pictures and MTV to Comedy Central and Spike TV. Toward the end of his life, he controlled about 80 percent of the voting stock in Viacom and CBS, presiding over both through National Amusements. And almost to the end,

“My father led an extraordinary life that not only shaped entertainment as we know it today, but created an incredible family legacy,” Sumner’s daughter Shari Redstone said in a statement on Wednesday. “Through it all, we

am writing to recap and expand on my recommendations to the Harris County Commissioners Court regarding the establishment of the office of Election Administrator in our County.

FIRST, under the law, once the Commissioners Court creates the office of Election Administrator, it will be the Harris County Election Commission that will have the power to hire and fire the election administrator, not Commissioners Court.

The members of the Election Commission are the County Judge, County Clerk, Tax Accessor-Collector, Harris County Democratic Party Chair and Harris County Republican Party Chair.

Four of the five members of the Harris County Election Commission are Democrats and include Ann Bennett the Tax Accessor-Collector and Chris Hollins the Interim County Clerk.

Once a new County Clerk is elected, they will replace Chris Hollins on the Election Commission. This is why I

am supporting Teneshia Hudspeth for County Clerk. I hope that all the Harris County Democratic Party Precinct Chairs will also support putting her on the November ballot as the Democratic Party candidate for the job.

SECOND, Commissioners Court and the Harris County Election Commission should create a 15-member Community Advisory Board (CAB) composed of both Republican and Democratic precinct chairs and other community leaders to participate in the hiring process for the election administrator.

This process should be similar to the process utilized by community colleges and universities when they hire a new President or Chancellor.

There should be community forums to introduce the top two or three candidates to the public so that voters can ask the candidates questions and the candidates can understand that public interaction with voters would be an essential part of their duties.

THIRD, the Advisory Board should remain in place after the hiring process and the Election Administrator should be required to meet with the Advisory Board on a quarterly basis every year.

FOURTH, the Election Administrator should be required to report to

and brief Commissioners Court at least thirty (30) days before all elections and provide an after-action report to both Commissioners Court and the Advisory Board within sixty days following an election.

FIFTH, the County Attorney should specifically be designated General Counsel for the office of Election Administrator. The County Attorney should be required to designate an Assistant County Attorney to work full time in the office of the Election Administrator.

SIXTH, any and all changes in election polling locations proposed by the Election Administrator must be discussed in advance with the Community Advisory Board and be subject to pre-clearance by the County Attorney before any such changes could be implemented.

SEVENTH, the Election Administrator and their office should be subject to an annual performance evaluation and a sunset review every five (5) or ten (10) years.

FINALLY, the Office of Election Administrator should be charged with the responsibility of achieving 100% voter registration among the voter eligible population of Harris County by 2025. They should also be responsible for sending a vote by mail ballot application to all voter eligible Harris

Additionally, the Office of Election Administrator should be responsible for maintaining public health and safety standards at all polling locations.

It is my belief that if these structural safeguards are adopted and implemented as a part of the creation of the office of Election Administrator, in Harris County, the voice of the community will be enhanced and the rights of the voters elevated and better protected.

pple has long been expected to debut a batch of 5G-enabled iPhones this fall. Now it appears all of the company›s new phone releases this year may be able to connect to the next generation of super-fast wireless networks, according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives.

That’s a significant milestone that could help convince millions of people to upgrade their smartphones.

5G could make the iPhone 12 a musthave product.

“We previously were [expecting] 4 models with a mix of 4G/5G for the iPhone 12 unveil, however now based on supply chain checks we are expecting ONLY 5G models for the Fall launch,” Ives wrote in an investor note Sunday evening.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment on this story.

Although the projection is not

a certainty, it would be a smart move for Apple (AAPL), driving big demand for the new iPhones as the company continues its march toward a $2 trillion market cap.

In recent years, consumers have been waiting longer between smartphone upgrades -- a trend that could be exacerbated by the economic crisis sparked by the coronavirus pandemic.

The biggest risk to new device sales is if “high unemployment and wage deflation continues,” according to Synovus Trust Company Senior Portfolio Manager Daniel Morgan.

But analysts largely expect the 5G iPhone to generate a “super cycle” of consumers buying new devices. Ives said he estimates roughly 350 million of the total 950 million iPhones on the market could be upgraded within the next year to 18 months.

cycle for (Apple CEO Tim) Cook & Co. since iPhone 6 in 2014 and will be another defining chapter in the Apple growth story looking ahead despite a softer consumer spending environment,” Ives said, adding that he believes many on Wall Street are “underestimating the massive pent-up demand around this super cycle for Apple.”

Apple’s strong earnings in the June quarter indicate it could withstand the pressures of the economic crisis, Morgan said.

And Ives predicts a lower priced, next generation 4G model will hit the market early next year, which would be a potential opportunity to reel in consumers unable or unwilling to shell out for a 5G phone.

Making a 5G-connected iPhone could improve the consumer experience for Apple’s digital services, like Apple TV+. Though iPhones have long been Apple’s biggest sales driver, the company is increasingly reliant on services to diversify its sales: Overall services revenue hit a record $13.2 billion in the June quarter, boosted by the pandemic-fueled shift in habits.

Apple is somewhat late to the 5G phone game. The 5G iPhone will join a growing slate of phones on the market built to connect to the next generation network, including models from Motorola (MSI), Samsung (SSNLF), Huawei, LG and others.

Samsung, one of Apple’s fiercest smartphone competitors, in January boasted that it held more than half of the global market share for 5G phones. And last week, Samsung unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 20, which comes with 5G capability and

an ecosystem of interconnected gadgets.

“But with Apple, it’s such a loyal ecosystem,” Morgan said, which means its customers have likely been holding out for Apple’s 5G offering.

Adoption of 5G phones is likely to accelerate as the rollout of the new network expands — consumers need a 5G-enabled phone to connect to the new network and take advantage of its benefits — and more features are built on top of it.

T-Mobile and AT&T (T) have both announced their 5G networks are available nationwide in the United States and Verizon (VZ) continues to build out high-speed 5G capabilities in cities throughout the country. China, a key market for iPhones, has also invested heavily in its 5G networks. $800 is the price point Ives says Apple is aiming for with its 4G iPhone 12, presumably a variant of the iPhone 12 Pro, given the iPhone 12 and (recently renamed) iPhone 12 Plus will already retail at $699 and $799 respectively. While far from cheap, $800 would represent a $200 saving on the 5G edition of the iPhone 12 Pro and, with 5G coverage still limited around the world, it would surely have plenty of buyers if positioned as a Pro phone at a Plus price.

He also predicts the new iPhones will go on sale in October. Apple last month said that while new iPhones typically go on sale in September, this year the company expects supply “to be available a few weeks later” because of the pandemic. www.Apple.com www.StyleMagazine.com

his week, the City of Houston announced a partnership with UNICEF USA by participating in the launch of the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) in the United States. Houston will join other cities like San Francisco and Minneapolis by serving as the first cohort of cities to implement an ambitious, twoyear process toward recognition as a UNICEF Child Friendly City.

amala Harris walked into a packed auditorium for her freshman orientation at Howard University and experienced a revelation.

As she studied her classmates at the historically Black school in Washington, D.C., she saw a mini-rainbow coalition of faces from around the US, Africa, the Caribbean and other places -- many impossible to fit into a neat box because their racial and socioeconomic backgrounds were so varied.

“I stood in the back, looked around and thought, ‘This is heaven!’

Harris recounts in her biography, “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey.”

“There were hundreds of people, and everyone looked like me.”

Presidential candidate Joe Biden’s selection of Harris as his running mate could have a similar impact.

Thousands of students at Howard and other historically Black colleges and universities -- known as HBCUs -- can now look at the 55-year-old Harris’ ascension and say the same: She looks like me.

Harris’ vice-presidential nod isn’t just a political milestone for African Americans and South Asian Americans. Harris is the first HBCU grad selected for such an honor. And at a time when many HBCUs are struggling financially, seeing her in the White House would be a ringing vindication of Black college culture.

“It would be momentous to not just see a product of a HBCU but a Black woman in a very powerful position,’’ says Jelani M. Favors, a historian and a graduate of North Carolina AT&T State University, another HBCU. “It would be a major sea change in the trajectory of these institutions.”

A Vice President Harris could evoke some of the same joy in Black people that Barack Obama’s election did in 2008, says Favors, author of “Shelter in a Time of Storm: How Black Colleges Fostered Generations of Leadership and Activism.”

“If she becomes vice president,” he says, “that would signal to America how Black colleges have played a role in shaping some of the most powerful people in this country.”

I was one of Harris’ classmates Favors doesn’t need to convince me. I was one of those freshman students at Howard that Harris described. She and I were in the same class and share some mutual friends.

Back then many Howard students wore a T-shirt that declared, “It’s a Black thang, you wouldn’t understand.”

It’s hard to convey to outsiders what it’s like to attend a Black college. It can be shocking as a young adult to walk into a space where Black people aren’t preoccupied with what White folks think.

Some of the most brilliant people I’ve ever met were Howard students.

They came from all over: Nigeria, Kenya, the Virgin Islands, inner-city Philly and sunny Southern California. It was an explosion of blackness.

Harris’ multiracial, international background -- her mother is from India and her father is Jamaican -- fit right into Howard.

But Howard is part of a larger

HBCU culture where Black lives have always mattered. It’s a culture of colorful “step shows” where Black Greek groups perform complex, synchronized dance-like routines as crowds cheer them on. It’s flamboyant, high-stepping marching bands battling one another at halftime of football games.

And it’s the constant reminder that you walk in the footsteps of famous HBCU graduates like John Lewis (Fisk University), Ella Baker (Shaw University), the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. (Morehouse College) as well as contemporary leaders like voting rights advocate Stacey Abrams (Spelman College) and author Ta-Nehisi Coates (Howard).

HBCUs are places where a Black person could go “without having your intellect or your humanity called into question,” Favors wrote in his book.

It’s why Beyoncé, who pays homage to HBCUs in her documentary, “Homecoming,” once said, “I always dreamed of going to an HBCU.”

Harris once cited two primary reasons for why she is who she is today: “Because of my mother and the family I was raised in, and Howard University.”

Her stature as vice president of the United States would enable her to promote the importance of HBCUs like no other, says Winston-Salem State University Chancellor Elwood Robinson.

“It would be a game-changer,” he says. “It would change the perception that the masses have about HBCUs. It would introduce so many people to a world and experience that they did not know.”

There are about 100 such schools around the country, and many have always struggled to survive. Most of them were formed after the Civil War to provide educational opportunities for newly freed slaves. They also enroll students of other races and ethnicities, including Whites, Latinos, Asians and Native Americans.

Some of those financial struggles are due to raw racism. Many states have consistently underfunded HBCUs. The landmark GI Bill, which allowed many World War II veterans access to college education, also helped fund White colleges to accommodate the influx of students. But much of that funding was denied to Black students and HBCUs.

Seeing a HBCU graduate like Kamala Harris in the White House and on the international stage could be the ultimate fill-in-the-blank for any HBCU student.

$32 MILLION FOR DIGITAL ACCESS: Commissioners Court Commits CARES ACT Funds To Ensure Digital Access and Provide Devices To Connect For Low-Income Children

aving a good education can set an individual up to handle all kinds of opportunities in life. Access to this type of education is not always readily available to all students for a variety of reasons. Obstacles are unique for each generation. For students of today, the biggest problem is the lack of Internet access and/or digital devices. This has been a critical need for students for some time and the global pandemic that has caused students to learn virtually has made this issue an even greater concern. Lawmakers are not deaf to the cries of parents and students’ needs. On Tuesday of this week, the Harris County Commissioners voted to spend $32 million to give students the needed digital tools and connectivity to advance their education.

Details of a study conducted by the nonprofit group, Common Sense, revealed that one in four Texas students do not have devices for virtual learning, and one in three lack adequate access to the Internet. Black, Latinos, or Native American were the largest ethnic group where this was prevalent giving them the greatest disadvantage. The $32 million investment in digital equipment and Internet access will help bring everyone on the same plane.

“Educational outcomes were already highly unequal before COVID-19,” said Commissioner Rodney Ellis. “As instruction moves online, we need to make sure that no child is left behind in their education, particularly those in low-income and communities of color, who do not have high-speed Internet and devices at home.”

Through the Digital Access Program, Harris County Commissioners are looking to acquire 211,000 devices and 82,000 in collaboration with community partners the Texas Education Agency, and T-Mobile. Funds for the project are being funneled through two programs by the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security or CARES Act.

Under the “Operation Connectivity,” program, devices like a Chromebook will be provided with the help of TEA. While 39,000 hotpots will be placed in the neighborhoods of the underserved provided though the “Project 10 Million” program.

“I am proud to support County Judge Lina Hidalgo’s initiative because it will ensure that all Harris County children have access to the necessary tools to safely continue their education,” said Commissioner Ellis.

Many companies understand the need for and the lack therein of access to the Internet for today’s students.

Comcast is one of those companies that get it. In 2011, they launched Internet Essentials, a program with the goal of bringing Internet access to low-income households for a very low rate. Since its first launch, Comcast has brought the power of connectivity to more than 8 million people in 2 million households.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan knows the district has seen a significant drop in student engagement since online learning began. In response to that, the district started the Students Within Reach/Return Strong campaign to get the more than 7,000 students back on track in the classroom.

ormally this time of the year in Houston fans are preparing to watch the Texans play their first preseason game all the while calling in to their favorite local sports shows and debating on social media about which third-string player has a chance to make an impact and the roster.

But times have changed dramatically with this global pandemic we are currently in caused by COVID-19. With the rate of individuals contracting the virus rising on a daily basis, the sports world has been turned upside down.

Including the Texans who are trying to do whatever they can following the protocols set by the NFL.

Coach O’Brien usually arrives at NRG Stadium no later than 5:15 a.m. every day to have the COVID-19 testing procedures administered on himself.

This is after waking up early to fill out the questionnaire concerning his health and whereabouts for the last 48 hours

that is required for entrance into the building. He knows the challenges that the team are faced with but is trying to make it as normal as possible.

“The first couple of weeks here will be a lot of strength and conditioning and walkthroughs,” said head coach Bill O’Brien. “Then we’ll progress into kind of like an OTA-type mode. I would say the first day in full pads would be August 14th, and that’s what we will start what we always call ‘real’ football. Up until that point, it is definitely a ramp up schedule that we’re trying to take advantage of.”

The Texans are holding all activities inside their indoor training facility and some parts of NRG stadium that has been rearraigned in order for social distancing protocols to be followed.

“The McNairs have invested a lot of money in the improvements and what it was going to take to get this building ready,” O’Brien said. “I

think the players are impressed with that. I think we have a good schedule. We’ve broken the team up into five different teams, so guys are staggered coming into the building, the weightlifting is staggered, the training rooms – we have three different training rooms.

Eventually we’ll all end up on the field at the same time, but the schedule has been a monumental task, but I feel like we are off to a good start with scheduling.”

Houston’s veterans have done an amazing job preparing for the changes coming into the preseason.

Although this situation is very different from anything, they have had to endure during their entire football careers, the majority of them took the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their fellow teammates coming into camp.

“For us, to be able to come in

and take the precautions and do the right things is very important,” said Deshaun Watson who is starting his fourth year with the team. “I know that this organization from when I came in have changed everything and put in the right safety precautions – the sanitizing to the locker room to the way we manage things. The first couple days of camp have been great and what we’ve seen has been a big change. We’re going in the right direction, especially for this organization.”

The Houston TEXANS open the ‘COVID-19’ season on September 10th against the reigning Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs.
