A

re black voters so loyal to Democrats that their issues are ignored? Donald Trump suggests as much, arguing that blacks had “nothing to lose” by voting for him. Now a column by Farai Chideya at FiveThirtyEight cites academics who make a similar argument.

In recent elections, about 90 percent of the black vote has gone to Democrats. Chideya cites Professor Paul Frymer of Princeton, who argues that politicians focus their appeals on swing voters, particularly “moderate, disaffected whites in the middle — whether you call them soccer moms or NASCAR dads.”

Chideya also cites two recent studies on how well black interests are represented in government. A 2015 report from the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies concluded that “black voices are less

Republican Party Rejects Black Voters equal than others when it comes to policy.” And a 2015 law review article by Professor Nicholas Stephanopoulos of the University of Chicago Law School “found that black support for Congressional legislation actually decreased its chances of passage.”

Are blacks voting against their own interests? Are they a “captured group” who would be better off if they weren’t so pro-Democrat?

African-American voters are neither fools nor inherently Democratic partisans. When Lincoln Republicans were leading the fight for the freedom amendments after the Civil War — the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments — African-Americans voted overwhelmingly with Republicans.

Blacks began voting Democratic when FDR launched the New Deal and stood with poor and working people in the Great Depression. When Democratic Dixiecrats fought to sustain legal segregation, many African-Americans in the South voted Republican. Dr. Martin Luther King’s father was a Republican.

But then, after Lyndon Johnson pushed through the Voting Rights Act and the Great Society, Republicans — beginning with Richard Nixon’s Southern strategy and continuing with Ronald Reagan and beyond — used racial dog-whistle politics to consolidate their party in the white South. The party of Lincoln became the party of Jefferson

Davis.

Now African-Americans vote overwhelmingly for Democrats not because we reject the Republican Party but because the Republican Party rejects us. If we vote our interests, we have little choice but to vote against a party that has systematically tried to undermine and constrict the right to vote, that votes against affordable housing, against expanding Social Security and against poverty programs.

Republicans have led the fight against a living wage. They oppose efforts to curb gun violence in our cities by blocking background checks and repealing the ban on assault weapons.

They vocally undermine enforcement of equal employment laws and antidiscrimination measures. Their Supreme Court nominees gutted the Voting Rights Act, and their legislators have blocked efforts to restore it. They have consistently voted against any plan to rebuild our cities, reinvest in infrastructure and put people to work. They oppose efforts to ease the student loan debt that burdens too many African-Americans.

Blacks vote against Republicans in overwhelming numbers because Republicans are overwhelmingly campaigning against our core interests.

Republicans can appeal to black voters but only if they reach out and change their policy positions. As former New Orleans Mayor Mark Morial told

Chideya, “A chicken can’t root for Colonel Sanders.”

Arguably, the real “captured group” of voters are the poor and working-class white voters who vote Republican. That vote is surely against their economic interests. Republicans have won their votes by appeals to race, to religion and to conservative social issues, but they never deliver. Liberal social movements for equality — the civil rights movement, the women’s movement and the gay rights movement — continue to make progress. And working and poor white people continue to lose ground economically. Now polls suggest that they favor Donald Trump for president, someone who opposes lifting the minimum wage, opposes empowering workers to organize, opposes expanding Social Security, wants to repeal health care reform and vows to cut taxes on the rich and corporations.

African-Americans aren’t a captured bloc of voters. We are people who are voting our interests — and looking for allies. Republicans have to decide if they want to continue to push off against us or begin to reach out to us.

Trump’s African American Popularity Jumps

ith less than six weeks to the November 8th National General Election with the early voting starting in about a month on October 24th, the race for President is becoming more competitive between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton in the African American community, throughout Texas and nationwide overall.

Donald Trump is gaining support among African-American voters — whose enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton is eroding a tracking poll released Saturday from the Washington Post revealed. The Texas Lyceum Poll last week reported Republicans losing ground statewide across Texas.

Trump saw a 16.5 percentagepoint increase in backing from AfricanAmerican voters in a Los Angeles Times/University of Southern California national tracking poll, up from 3.1 percent on Sept. 10th to 19.6 percent through last Friday, September 16th.

Others report he›s at least up to six percent among African Americans The same LA Times/USC poll showed Clinton’s support among African Americas plummeting from 90.4 percent to 71.4.

Trump is a businessman who knows the bottom line about

building jobs and business opportunity and will be matter fact about safety for our communities and security for our country, said RW Bray, a black Houston businessman and Texas National Guard Veteran campaigning with Trump.

Clinton’s nearly 20-point crash began Sunday, said Dan Schnur of USC following the video of her collapsing while being pushed into a Secret Service van at a New York City 9/11 event.

The survey, which spanned through Friday, (September 16) included the days in which Trump reignited the divisive “birther” issue — which critics contend is a thinly veiled attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the country’s first black president.

Tr u m p h a d r e f u s e d t o acknowledge President Obama was born in the US, demurring on the topic in a Washington Post interview published the next day. At a bizarre press conference at Trump International, his new hotel in Washington, DC, the tycoon conceded, “President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period.”

Polls done after September 10th found a 6-point rise for Trump.

The Republican nominee polled then in that poll at 47.2 percent of the vote to Clinton’s 41.2 percent. “It’s the largest shift we’ve seen in a one-week period

Closer to home here in Texas, the Texas Lyceum Polls posts If the U.S. presidential election were held today, ballot tests show a tighter race at the top of the ticket in deep red Texas than recent history would suggest on the heels of the one point separation suggested a week earlier. According to Lyceum’s poll of 1,000 adult Texans,

Trump leads Clinton by 7 points or 39-32 percent among likely voters.

Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson polls at 9 percent and Green Party Candidate Jill Stein won 3 percent in the trial ballot among registered voters.

Clinton trails Trump by only 1 point in the 4 way race, and holds a surprising 4 –point lead over Trump in a two way trial ballot, not including Johnson and Stein, 39 to 35 percent.

Breaking down the results by race here in Texas Lyceum reports Trump wins 55 percent of whites, 10 percent among blacks and 18 percent among Hispanics. Clinton polls in Texas 24 percent among whites, 74 percent among blacks and 56 percent Hispanics.

The last day to register to vote in the November 8th election is Tuesday, October 11th.

UH Students Told Not to Drink Campus Water Style Newswire

D

iscolored water caused University of Houston officials to issue a campus-wide warning for students to avoid drinking the water on campus. The warning came after several students complained of seeing yellow water flowing from faucets. UH is working with the City of Houston to fix the problem. Initial tests have shown that the water is safe to drink but officials are waiting for all results before giving students the all clear sign.

UH officials have given out bottles of water to students and made sure food trucks were available for meals.

But there is no bad blood between the two businesses as the Creuzot family it is time for a move. The original building is old and limiting to what the staff can do.

tate Rep. Garnet Coleman plans to file the Sandra Bland Act at this upcoming session.

The act will detail the wishes and recommendations of the family that came about through the Sandra Bland case and Coleman have been discussed at the House Committee on County Affairs’ oversight hearings. Part of that act will include measures to stop pretext stops. A pretext stop occurs when a law enforcement officer uses a minor violation as a pretext to stop a person, to investigate a separate and unrelated, suspected criminal offense.

Furr High School awarded $10 million grant Houston ISD Blog

The five-year grant, awarded by the XQ Institute, began with a call for innovative ideas for redesigning traditional American high schools to prepare students for college and the workforce. Only 10 schools were awarded grants.

Accepting the award at a ceremony in Washington D.C., Principal Bertie Simmons said the grant will help elevate Furr to a new level of achievement.

George Bush to Vote for Hillary Clinton CNN Newswire

Bush said that he would vote for Hillary Clinton i n N o v e m b e r, Bush according to sources close to the 41st President – an extraordinary rebuke of his own party’s nominee. This was not the first time Bush had disclosed his intention to vote for Clinton. The comments came during a Points of Light Foundation event when Bush was speaking with Kathleen Hartington Kennedy Townsend, Robert Kennedy’s daughter and former Maryland lieutenant governor.

Crossing the Thinnest Line

our business is doing well. It could do better.

Just like every other business in America, you have good weeks and bad. Sales go up and they flatten. You have financial feast-or-famine and you’d like more of the former than the latter. Author Lauren Leader-Chivée says she knows how you can achieve that and in “Crossing the Thinnest Line,” she explains.

Open the door to your office and look around.

What does your staff look like? Many managers, as Leader-Chivée learned at a conference, tend to surround themselves with people who look like them.

That might feel most comfortable, she indicates, but to do so is to miss out.

While some may find it awkward to actively, purposefully seek diversity, Leader-Chivée says it’s important to remember that most of us have ancestors who were outsiders once. It’s also rare in today’s world for anyone to live in a bubble: you probably already know, are related to, or come in regular contact with someone who is different than you, and you think nothing of it - which is to say that while humans generally resist change, you may already have “acquired diversity.”

Many folks find acquired diversity through family relationships and personal discoveries. Others simply jump in and get to know people who don’t look like them.

Insisting on diversity in the workplace not only “sparks creativity,” but it’s also forward-thinking: within the next 25-to-30 years, the U.S. will “become a majority-minority.” Diversity makes it easier to tap into new markets with impressive buying power, it allows your company to gain a foothold on other

continents, and it will help to avoid the embarrassment of miscommunication. By utilizing new experiences from divergent people, you and your employees will benefit from a fresh point-of-view, taking “full advantage of… talents, insights, and creative energies” and a much larger scope of knowledge.

I cannot deny that what’s inside “Crossing the Thinnest Line” could be helpful. It’s filled with statistics, surprising solutions, and illustrative stories that show what world leaders and Big Business are doing. But that richness of info can also be a downfall: there’s just too much to take in here.

I really found myself wishing that author Lauren Leader-Chivée had made this into two books, or even three; that might have eased the overwhelmed feeling. As it is, the needs for large corporations are covered well, but not so much those of small-business owners or Mom-and-Pops who are miles from the Fortune 500. Leaders looking to hire more women will need to trek through information on diversity in race, sexuality, and religion. Non-business-minded readers get a little of everything, and may lose interest long before finding what they really need.

This isn’t a bad book – it’s just too much of a book and reading it for its full benefit will take considerable time. If you’ve got that time, though, dive into “Crossing the Thinnest Line.” It may do your business well.

Standing Tall: Refusing to Let Them Win

S

ticks and stones may break my bones but I’ll stand tall before I fall. That may be the start to a child’s nursery rhythm with a message to be strong despite the obstacles but it couldn’t be more relevant to our times today that are not child’s play.

Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown Jr., Eric Garner, Jordan Davis, Tamir Rice, Walter Scott, Freddie Gray, Jordan Baker, and Oscar Grant and now we add Terence Crutcher and Keith Lamont Scott to the continuing growing list of black men gunned down before their time. Why were their lives cut short?

Selling CDs, playing music too loud, having a book, following instructions, and walking home with Skittles and an ice tea. Our black men are dying at an alarming rate for doing things people do every day…living their lives. But their lives are being taken because of cowards hiding behind a badge, privilege, and the law blaming every thing else but won’t call it what it is … racism in America.

The newest names added to America’s list of being black while ______ fill in the blank are Terence Crutcher and Keith Lamont Scott. Crutcher was driving when his SUV broke down. Like most in a similar situation, Crutcher got out of his vehicle and waited for help. Then his path crossed with Officer Betty Shelby to which Crutcher approached with his hands in his pockets then held up. Officer Shelby thought this was strange behavior. Really Officer Shelby? Sad to say this is normal behavior when black men deal with law enforcement. Crutcher approaches his vehicle, which makes Officer Shelby thinks he is getting a weapon. So instead of shooting to injury, she shoots to kill.

In Scott’s case there are two versions to the story. The police say Scott was sitting in his vehicle with a handgun then he exited, return to the vehicle and exited again as police in the area on another call approached him. Police said he posed a deadly threat due to the gun that they told him to drop. Scott didn’t comply. Feeling threaten, Officer Brentley Vinson shot Scott and he died at the hospital. Scott’s family says Scott was disabled and he didn’t have a gun. He had a book.

How do I feel? I feel numb but that numbness doesn’t come from getting used to these stories and these images. That numbness comes from the fear of what will happen when I look at the screen or read a story on my phone and it’s someone I know. The numbness comes from wanting answers to a question that I already know the answers to.

People look at me as a black man and want me to give these profound answers and want me to explain to them why police are not just killing us but are afraid of us. The answer is simple; they fear us because they don’t understand us and they don’t want to. Every black man is a threat. Every black woman is a loud mouth.

I’m not a historian but there hasn’t been a point in United States’ history where America wasn’t trying to break us. In 2016, they still boo the President of the United States for no reason at all other than the color of his skin.

How do I feel? I feel like I don’t want to give up. I feel like I’m still going to walk into work with my head up and carry myself as a man. I’m not going to hide in my house or tense up when I see a police car behind me. By letting them take away my peace of

mind and sensibility I won’t let them win and neither should you.

It doesn’t start or end with these scary police officers killing men for selling CD’s or having a broken down car. It’s them not giving us loans for homes and businesses. It’s them making laws that take away our grandparents’ homes so they can build townhomes and new parks.

I’m angry. I want to scream and fight and go for a drive right now hoping a police officer tries to pull me over for no reason. Just so I can stand up and not become a statistic but if I become that man, they win. If I give into my anger and resentment, I get a record. I can’t use my passport. I can’t get student loans. I can’t get a job. That’s what they want more than anything. That’s what crime is about. It’s about sticking us in neighborhoods hoping we lose hope and never leave. Hoping we fight each other because we have no other options.

I will spend the rest of my life fighting them not with a gun or with a knife but with my will to not be what they expect me to be, but with what they don’t want me to be…successful and not afraid. These men that have died didn’t die for a noble cause. They didn’t give their lives in sacrifice of others. They died because of cowards. Don’t tell me a police officer is a

black man to make it better. Police aren’t black, white, Asian, Hispanic, Muslim or any other ethnicity, they’re blue. Why are they blue? Because the ones of them that don’t stand up and call out the cowards are just as bad.

I stand with the families of the men that were shot and killed for unjust reasons. I stand with the football players losing endorsements and getting death threats. I stand with the college students that are marching and tweeting. I stand with and for us and anyone that doesn’t understand that or that wants to tell us we’re promoting racism. I’m finished explaining myself to you.

hen political cartoonist Julio Salgado saw a photo showing a 12-year-old boy standing in front of a crowd that over the weekend was marching against a proposal to legalize same-sex marriage in Mexico, he had a knee-jerk reaction.

Salgado drew a black and white political cartoon that mirrored the original photo of the 12-year-old boy. He drew the marching crowd and in front of it a banner that read “homophobia.” He also drew the boy holding a flag that read “From Mexico’s future, with love!”

he Hispanic population living in the United States is growing at the slowest rate since official record-keeping began nearly 50 years ago, according to a report. Hispanics grew by an average of more than 5% annually throughout the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s, driving much of the population growth in the country. n 2013, a Miami jail wrongly classified a Dominican woman as a man, even placing her for 10 hours with male inmates. Now, the woman, Fior Pichardo de Veloz, has filed a $5 million civil rights lawsuit against the Miami-Dade Corrections Department. While de Veloz visiting Florida for the birth of her grandchild Fior Pichardo de Veloz, was arrested for a decades-long drug charge that had been dismissed.

She was first booked as a woman; however, medical staff later reclassified her as a man because they allege she had “non-traditional male characteristics.”

An examination revealed that Fior Pichardo de Veloz had male reproductive organs and she was sent to a male-only facility.

Leaving a Legacy Long After the Game The Wade Smith Foundation and Houston Super Bowl Host Committee Partner for National Literacy Month Words and Photography By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

T

he countdown is on! The clock is ticking. We are just 150 days away until Houston hosts the most watched game, Super Bowl LI Preparations are revving up as Houston rolls out the red carpet for guests near and far.

Long after the game is gone on February 18, 2017, the legacy of Super Bowl LI will still be felt in Houston due to partnerships like that of the Wade Smith Foundation (WSF) with the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee (HSBHC).

Together these organizations are igniting the fire for a love of reading among Houston area students.

Under the umbrella of Touchdown Houston, there are three main initiatives that the HSBHC is launching. One of those focuses is on early literacy. HSBHC’s Director of Community Relations LaMecia Butler said, “When you look at the statistics and what happens when children aren’t reading at grade level, they are four times more likely to drop out of school if they are not reading by grade level Wade Smith with Supporters by third grade.” The host committee looked at statistics like that and ones noting that there is only one book for every 300 children in low-income neighborhoods and knew they had to react. Butler added, “This was an opportunity for us as the host committee to say this is important.

We say that this is the Super Bowl of the future and that means the future are our kids. So how do we make sure that they are prepared and that we are leaving a legacy for them beyond the game.”

Leaving a legacy of loving to read in children is the goal of host committee. In looking at ways to accomplished this audacious task they looked to someone already on the front lines tackling this same goal. They found that in former Houston Texans, author, entrepreneur and childhood literacy champion Wade Smith. Through his foundation, the Wade Smith Foundation (WSF), and his Reading with the Pros Literacy (RWTP) events, Smith and his band of celebrity friends that include current/former NFL, NBA, WNBA players and collegiate athletes have participated in nearly 50 RWTP reading events at schools and libraries throughout Houston and Dallas since April 2012.

The partnership of WSF and HSBHC launched at Kashmere Gardens Elementary with their first RWTP event in celebration of National Literacy Month.

Before reading his children’s book, “Smitty Hits the Play Books,” Smith told of his love for reading which stemmed from his mother who got him reading at an early age. With his mom’s support and Hooked on Phonics Smith is proud to say that he was a pretty good reader as a child and now he wants to pass that on to today’s children.

“Education is the big equalizer,” said Smith in our one-on-one interview.

“It doesn’t matter where you start from in life, you can be on the lower social economic situation and education can bring you up and get you out of your current situation. So this foundation loves to go to the places that need the most help and kind of explain to the kids, like, ‘hey you may be in a certain situation now but you don’t have to stay that way.’ Using your mind to expand your thought processes and where you want to go in life and what you want to achieve can take you farther than you may ever dream.” Smith added that he just wants children to know that education and reading are important and it’s cool to be intelligent.

But Smith is not just making sure children love to read. He is making reading exciting with the “Read All the Wade” contest. Kashmere Garden students along with those at Blackshear, Epps Island, Kennedy, Montgomery, and James Berry Elementary Schools are being challenged to read 25,000 books between October 1, 2016 to January 27, 2017. Each school will compete to read books equal to the height of a life-size Wade Smith “Touchdown Spike” cardboard cutout.

Each school will receive a donation of 1,000 books for their school’s library. The winning school will receive a Reading with the Pros literacy event at their school, Houston Super Bowl Edition, one Kindle per class, and a customized trophy!

Smith loves to read books and write them. His first book, “Smitty Hits the Play Books” has already been released. His second book is going through the publishing process and the concept for his third book has already been drafted.

In addition to being an early literacy advocate, Smith is a businessman and ambassador for the Houston Texans. He said he is busier now than he ever was playing in the NFL but he always has time to support childhood literacy.

In small dish, combine chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, paprika, cumin, salt and pepper, and stir together until well mixed.

Place uncooked steak strips into re-sealable plastic bag and add spice mixture. Seal bag and shake/turn until steak is coated with seasoning.

Pour oil into large skillet and bring to medium heat. Add seasoned steak strips and stir to coat steak with oil. Cook, stirring and flipping occasionally, about 5 minutes, or until steak strips are cooked to taste. Remove from heat.

Warm tortillas slightly in microwave then lay out to fill. Divide lettuce and steak between tortillas and top each with 1 tablespoon of guacamole. Sprinkle each taco with sprouts and slices of tomato and radish.

e’re in the home stretch.

After many months, many candidates and wall-to-wall media coverage, Election Day is now less than eight weeks away. There is important work we all must do before November 8th.

It’s time for Houstonians to get ready for Election Day. It’s time for Houstonians to make sure that they’re registered to vote.

According to the latest Census data, there are 4,538,028 people living in Harris County, with 73% of that population being of voting age. Of those 3.3 million people, 63% - or 2.1 million – are actually registered to vote. In other words, there are still 1.2 million eligible people that could vote in November but will be unable to do so unless they register by the deadline of October 11th.

The good news is that there is still

time to get yourself (and your family and friends) ready to vote in November.

There will be many opportunities to get registered between now and October 11th, but none more visible than National Voter Registration Day on September 27th. There will be a lot going on that day – phone banks, block walks, social media engagement, and city-wide in-person registration opportunities, to name a few.

With everything going on that day, there

will be no excuse for any of us to not get registered and ready to vote. Also, if you’ve recently moved, make sure that you’re registered to vote at your current address.

he highly anticipated second Houston Black Heritage Music and Arts Festival is a one-day cultural event produced by the nonprofit 501c3 tax-exempt organization, “The Foundation for Black Heritage and Culture”. The festival featured speakers, exhibits, musicians, artists, poets and craftspeople locally and nationally. This festival in its second year also offered both children and adults with an opportunity to increase their awareness of African and African-American culture and history. Award winning artist Monica was this year’s musical headliner. Blushhh Music of Mathew Knowles Music World Entertainment, Brian Jack, H.I.S.D., De’dre, Endurance, Pastor Terrance Johnson of Higher Dimensions Church, and Jazz Anderson, daughter to Basketball Wives star, Tami Roman also took to the main stage. ll H-E-B stores across the state hosted a Read 3 Read-In, encouraging community members and shoppers to park their carts, grab a book and participate in organized story times. The purpose of the Read-In was to celebrate the 5th birthday of the Read 3 program, which has collected more than 3 million books and donated to families in need since 2011. From Sept. 14-27, H-E-B is asking customers and schools to donate children’s books to in-store bins to help reach a goal of collecting 1 million additional books in 2016. BUSINESS BRIEFS Comcast Confirms Plans to Launch Mobile Phone Service in 2017 The Verge

C

omcast just solidified long-rumored plans to launch its own MVNO cellular service. Speaking at an investor conference, CEO Brian Roberts revealed that the Comcast “network” will launch by mid-2017 and put a large focus on Wi-Fi hotspots — similar to Google’s Project Fi. When away from Wi-Fi connections, Comcast’s service will run on the Verizon Wireless network. Roberts didn’t announce pricing or more detailed rollout plans, only saying that Comcast will aim the mobile solution at its existing base of cable customers. That plan would give Comcast its own answer to the one-two punch that AT&T offers through its DirecTV satellite service.

attress Firm and three-time World Champion Simone Biles announced a multi-year partnership to create awareness of the Biles retailer’s national Mattress Firm Foster Kids program and help promote the importance of sleep, especially for children. Mattress Firm Foster Kids supports local foster care nonprofit partners in its communities across the country in an effort to help foster kids beat the odds.

Susan G. Komen Announces $27 Million Health Equity Initiative to Reduce Breast Cancer Deaths in African-American Community Black PRWire

T

he Susan G. Komen breast cancer organization gathered philanthropic, civic, medical and business leaders in Washington today to formally launch a $27 million, 10-city initiative to reduce breast cancer death rates among African-American women. The Fund II Foundation made the $27 million grant for the Komen African-American Health Equity Initiative possible.

The initiative initially targeted 10 U.S. cities where mortality rates and late-stage diagnosis of African-American women are highest. The goal: to reduce the mortality gap by 25 percent within five years of beginning work in each city.

or the first time, fans can buy Super Bowl tickets straight from the National Football League. The NFL will make Super Bowl LI ticket packages available through a site run by Ticketmaster. For as little as $5,500 and as much as $12,000, fans will get to pick their specific seats, attend parties before and after the Feb. 5 championship in Houston and, in some cases, get on-field access after the game. Until now, tickets for the Super Bowl have only been distributed through the NFL and its 32 teams.

For Super Bowl 50, the participating teams received 35 percent of the tickets, the host San Francisco 49ers got another 5 percent and the remaining 29 franchises were allocated 1.2 percent each. The league claimed the final 25 percent.

Blue Bell Recalls Cookie Dough Ice Cream Over Listeria Concerns CNN Money

lue Bell ice cream is back in hot water. The Brenham, Texas-based company is once again worried about potential listeria contamination. Blue Bell said Wednesday that it is recalling packages of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream – Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Cookie Two Step. The company said a batch of edible cookie dough that Blue Bell gets from a third-party supplier, Aspen Hills, may contain listeria -- a bacteria that can be deadly for the young, sick or elderly. Both companies say no illnesses have been reported. Blue Bell said on Twitter Wednesday that it’s issuing the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”

he Clinton Foundation will lay off dozens of Clinton Global Initiative staff at the end of 2016, according to officials with the group. All full-time CGI employees will have their jobs with benefits through the end of the year, according to the officials, who said those leaving at that point were provided with other jobs available within the Clinton Foundation that will continue. The Clinton Foundation, particularly the Clinton Global Initiative, is preparing to undergo wholesale changes at the end of the year given the chances that Hillary Clinton will be elected president in November.

Texas Sues Obama Administration Over New Overtime Rule Texas Tribune

T

exas is helping lead a lawsuit against President Barack Obama’s administration over a new Paxton rule that makes millions more workers eligible for overtime pay. Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Tuesday he is joining other states to file the lawsuit on behalf of 21 states. Paxton said the rule is another example of Obama “trying unilaterally rewrite the law.” The rule, set to go into effect Dec. 1, doubles the salary threshold under which workers qualify for overtime pay, from $455 per week to $913 per week. The Labor Department estimates the rule will benefit an additional 4.2 million workers.

Lawmakers Say EpiPen Hikes Made Mylan Executives ‘Filthy Rich’ CNN Money

ylan CEO Heather Bresch insisted that the outrage swirling around her company’s decision to dramatically hike the Bresch cost of its EpiPen has been overblown. Bresch said the company’s profit on its $609 EipPen two-packs is about $50 per pen. Her defense of Mylan’s pricing unleashed a barrage of comments from lawmakers who spent hours telling Bresch that the cost of an EpiPen two-pack -- about $500 more today then when Mylan bought rights to sell the device in 2007 -- was “sickening.” Also damning were the hundreds of millions of dollars pocketed by Mylan’s top five executives in recent years.
