T

his has been insurgent summer in presidential politics. Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders have soared while establishment favorites Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton have flagged.

It is far too early to tell how these two will fare in the primaries next year. But one thing is already clear: They are raising issues that politicians in both parties can no longer duck.

Insurgent candidates gain traction when their campaigns resonate with voters (or, in these early months, with voters attentive enough to be tuned in already). When I ran in 1984 and 1988, my campaigns surprised pundits because I was speaking to what many Americans felt. Reagan’s conservative reaction was on the march; Democrats were tacking to the right. But many Americans were left out of the equation.

Workers suffered as jobs were shipped overseas. The working poor suffered as investments in housing, health care, education and more were slashed. Many were dismayed at Reagan’s reckless new Cold War, and his idiotic covert war on Nicaragua. Both parties had

Both Parties are Losing Touch with The People embraced top-end tax cuts, deregulation and corporate trade policies. Both supported apartheid South Africa and called Mandela a terrorist. Neither could see that Israeli security depended upon Palestinian statehood. Our no-talk policy made no progress. Democrats decided that they had to compete to be hawkish on foreign policy, corporate on domestic policy and timid on social policy.

My campaigns exploded in the vacuum. And while we didn’t win, we changed the agenda. A boycott was imposed on South Africa over Reagan’s veto. Congress ended support for the contras of Nicaragua. Years later, U.S. policymakers belatedly embraced the two-state solution in the Middle East.

And Bill Clinton ran on Putting People First, calling for tax hikes on the rich, investment in education, national health care and labor rights in trade accords.

In this election, Sanders and Trump have raised fundamental issues that challenge a bipartisan consensus that does not work for most Americans.

The first of these is the corrupting effects of big money in our politics. Sanders, funding his campaign with small donations, warns of the perils of big money directly. Trump, using his fortune to declare his independence, scorns his opponents as “puppets” of their donors. Politicians in both parties better wake up: Clean up our politics or lose the respect of your voters.

The second issue is our corporate trade policies that are racking up deficits of $500 billion a year while shipping good jobs abroad and undermining wages here at home. Our trade policies are destructive urban policy, as drugs and guns flow in and jobs go out.

Sanders correctly indicts these policies

as rigging the rules against American workers. Trump makes our “bad deals” a centerpiece of his appeal. The next president will have to change course, or this protest will grow.

A third issue is America’s endless wars. Both Sanders and Trump emphasize that they opposed Bush’s invasion of Iraq from the start. At a time when candidates are flexing their military muscles, both counsel caution about more interventions in Syria, Ukraine and Iraq. Trump boasts that he is the “most militaristic person there is,” while Sanders has a proud history of opposing U.S. misadventure abroad, but both are appealing to the vast majority of Americans who do not believe the U.S. can afford to police the world.

A fourth issue, likely to emerge even more starkly in the next Republican debates, is taxes. Sanders explicitly tells billionaires “enough is enough.” He calls for raising taxes on the wealthy and shutting down corporate loopholes to invest in rebuilding the country, making college free for all, expanding Social Security and investing in children.

Trump is more confused, but in contrast to his opponents who are still selling top-end tax cuts, he earns applause for insisting that hedge fund billionaires should pay their fair share of taxes.

For years we’ve had paralysis in Washington on the key issue of immigration. Millions of undocumented workers live in the shadows, exploited by callous employers. The strength of this country is its diversity. A horror of our history has been nativist anger at each wave of immigrants. Sanders seeks a solution that will bring the country together; Trump has slanderously chosen to drive us apart. He’s tried to make immigration a Mexican issue,

but that ignores reality. Threatening the largest deportation -- 11 million people -- in world history isn’t about Mexico; it’s about who we are. Clearly we are paying a huge price for the cowardice of politicians unwilling to address this issue sensibly and that has to stop.

Single issues like these are markers for the bigger reality. This economy doesn’t work for most people.

The rules are rigged to favor the few.

Big money corrupts our politics to defend their privileges. Americans are looking for a new deal here at home.

S a n d e r s a n d Tr u m p , o f course, are stark contrasts. Sanders is a thoughtful progressive; Trump an entertainer, offering postures, not policies. Sanders calls for a popular movement to transform America; Trump argues voters should trust him to do it, ignoring the existence of Congress or the courts.

But on right and left, among Republicans and Democrats, more and more are unwilling to accept politics as usual. Too many people are left out of that arrangement. Politicians keep saying there is light at the end of the tunnel. But the only light people experience is of a train coming their way. The two major parties will have to change, or they are likely to be changed by voters who have had enough.

evin Fulton talked Tuesday (September 1st) about his walk that began as a young boy in the inner city as the son of a single mom where he never knew his dad. As he announced his 2016 campaign for Harris County’s 11th District Court he talked about growing up in poverty where life was not fair and most people were not nice. Growing up in an atmosphere like that made him driven to become a fair judge that treats all those that come before him with respect.

“I saw how violent gangs, guns and drugs destroy human life and humanity. I saw good people guide me too. I remember racism when we moved to the suburbs where I was called racist words that tore my heart and brought tears to my eyes,” Fulton said to a crowded West Houston Café Adobe filled with a montage of his friends from all races, ages and regions from throughout all Harris County.

“I have heard for years citizens of every color complain about justice not being fair and that respect is not levied in Harris County›s courts. Colleagues and those seeking justice have said to me they’ve felt that they were wronged one way or the other because of politics or pigmentation,” he said about what motivates him to run a county wide race

Fulton said his mom never blamed race for where they were in life.

She taught him the priority of prayer, persistence and passion to overcome poverty.

His mom taught him to never accept things the way they were or how people said to him they were but to fight inside to get everyone included to make things better. That’s why he joined the

“I served in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Provide Comfort. I saw the worst of folks in horrible places and then used my military benefits to go to college. I worked as a police officer where I saw horror too and earned a law degree before meeting my now physician wife,” Fulton said.

youth counseling, helping victims of violence and training at risk students in conflict resolution.

“I’ve led job training and job fairs. I used my legal skills at the DA office, community legal aid, became a consultant for an agency specializing in apartments for low income families and helped them, if they wanted to, move to homeownership. I worked for a company that handled employment law issues, helping tenants and others before building my own firm,” Fulton said.

“I have four daughters; the oldest attends UH. My aim is for them to live in a county where not only are they not judged by their color but the content of their character but where I’m a judge that sets an example to them not to judge others without knowing as many of the facts as possible,” he said.

The Primary election contests are March 1, 2016. Fulton’s plan is to face Judge Mike Miller on November 8, 2016.

Father Kills Himself Taking Gun Selfie

Volunteers told KHOU that the wanted to give the students hope, show some love, and inspire and encourage them to have a great school year. Their job was accomplished. Volunteers spruced up the campus, renovated the school’s weight room, and made over two rooms for special needs students. ouston Rockets’ Dwight Howard told investigator he forgot it was there. A TSA agent at a security checkpoint recently caught Howard with a loaded Glock 26 handgun in his carry-on bag at the Bush Intercontinental Airport. HPD were called Dwight Howard but no charges were filed by the Harris County DA against Howard. He was allowed to fly after having a friend pick up the gun.

While Deleon Alonso Smith was taking a selfie of himself holding a gun to his head he pulled the trigger of what he thought was an unloaded gun. Sadly, it was not and the gun went off killing Smith instantly. Family said the shooting was accidentally as Smith did not have plans to kill himself. The floors gleam, the kitchen shines, the bathroom sparkles, and rugs are fluffy again.

You’ve changed bedsheets and you even washed windows. You’re ready for fall and thankful for the help you had getting this way; if that help was paid, read ‘Household Workers Unite” by Premilla Nadasen, and you’ll be thankful for even more.

Picture this: a white reporter encourages African American maids to “speak out about their hardship” and the women who employ them. You know the movie, but did you recognize the “victimization theme”? Yes, says Nadasen, The Help “reinforces dominant stereotypes of passive household workers,” even though there was historically nothing passive about them…

In the years following the Civil War, the “Mammy” figure took hold in white America, becoming somewhat of a cult based on the idea of a loyal, maternal female slave. That vestige of slavery (and inherent racism) generally affected how African American domestic workers were treated by white female employers then, but “new ideas were germinating.”

In 1881, black laundresses formed a “Washing Society” and eventually went on strike for higher wages. Activism never stopped, but there was a setback in the fledgling movement during the Depression, when black domestics found day-work by sitting in a street corner “slave market,” and that didn’t go unnoticed. By 1934, journalists, activists, and other black feminists threw their support behind Dora Jones, who led the Domestic Workers Union (founded in 1934) in New York.

Nurse, midwife, and housekeeper Georgia Gilmore used her cooking skills to raise money for “The Club from Nowhere,” a group supporting activists and organizers both financially and with food.

Undoubtedly, the Civil Rights Movement spurred Atlanta’s Dorothy Bolden to work with Dr. King on behalf of household workers. Cleveland’s Geraldine Roberts founded the Domestic Workers of America.

Edith Barksdale Sloan pushed the movement along when she became head of the National Committee on Household Employment. Other influential women bore their share of the movement, just as today’s activists help protect the workplace rights of caregivers, personal helpers, and domestic workers of all races.

Imagine seeing a federally-funded monument to the “black mammy,” standing in our nation’s capital.

Yep, in 1924, the United Daughters of the Confederacy tried to build exactly that, and it was “furiously opposed.”

That’s just one of the stories you’ll read inside “Household Workers Unite.”

Stories, says author Premilla Nadasen, are what she tried to fill her book with, in fact, and she somewhat succeeds. There are, indeed, a lot of stories here, but there’s plenty of dryness, too, in the form of names, dates, and acronyms that ultimately become quite overwhelming. My advice is to try and get through them; this book is powerful and inspiring, but the voices and their memories are what matters.

This isn’t your curl-up-in-front-of-a-fireplace kind of read but it is a pleasure, especially if you’re a historian, feminist, or domestic worker yourself.

“Household Workers Unite” will make you think as it eats up every speck of your time.

eing good at something is somewhat comfortable. It can mean that you have mastered a skill set well enough that you could do it with no instruction or supervision. It may even mean that you can teach it to someone else. Being great at something is achieving excellence. It means that you can perform the skill so well that no one can do it quite like you. That is what it means to be an entrepreneur. Taking a common thing and doing it an uncommon way. It is taking something that is good and making it great.

And Dillard speaks from experience. His why has always been centered around three things – to have time (freedom), help people, and be able to spend time with his family. When he first started on his entrepreneurial journey, he was really focused on the helping of others part of his why. He, along with a group of friends, saw how premarital sex was really to the determent of their generation. The friends started a No Sex Campaign to encourage teens and young adults to abstain from sex until they were married. The friends then took the campaign further when they made the song ‘No Sex’ about it within their group called Still Trill Christians. Their campaign was successful and was gaining some notoriety. It really gained national legs when their song ended up on bobbing the head of our Commander in Chief Barack Obama.

President Obama was so impressed by the song and the friends’ campaign that he awarded them all the President’s Volunteer Award.

However, now Dillard is embracing another facet of creativity with his love of writing. Hence, his debut book “The Power of Vision,” where he is helping to nurture the young entrepreneur. (Side Note: Young entrepreneur does not mean young in age but young in the process of becoming an entrepreneur.) On the entrepreneur journey your why shouldn’t change but the process of how you get their might. Dillard is still focused on his vision with his why of helping others so he can have time freedom and time with family but the process change from the music avenue to the writing avenue.

In Dillard’s book he motivates entrepreneurs to take that first step towards their vision. This is often the hardest step and the step that keeps so many people back. Being an entrepreneur is scary but you can’t be too scared to jump off the cliff. “It helps people go from the comfortable middle life to the life of destiny,” said Dillard. He says people get trapped in the doing good of life because it makes us comfortable. When you are comfortable you don’t try things that scare you.

So don’t get too comfortable. Because when you are too comfortable at being good you can never achieve being great.

Dillard reminds readers that although there are many positives about being an entrepreneur there are also some negatives as it is “not a comfortable lifestyle” at times. He says when the negatives of failure come embrace it. “Embrace failure because it is going to come. It’s part of the process.”

Besides helping budding entrepreneurs, Dillard will also dive into helping young authors this fall with a digital course called “Do It Yourself Author.” Future authors will join Dillard as he takes you through the process of taking your idea for a book to an actual written work to pages in a bound book to a published hard copy. Again, staying focus on his vision for his why of helping people to be with his family and have time freedom.

Dillard’s motto is simple in life you always need to know the “why” of what you are doing. It is the why that will keep you going. It is the why that will cause you to fall or soar. nown for her impeccable fashion style and larger than life than personality, Marlo Hampton of Bravo’s ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ visited Houston to host “The Art of Style” event at the Posh Salon.

Hampton first introduced her unique fashion style to her fans on Bravo’s hit reality show “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” She began to quickly field questions regarding how she achieve her sense of style. As a

result Hampton established the Art of Style tour to inspire not only aspiring fashion designers and stylists, but to educate the everyday woman on fashion tips and tricks.

“I created The Art of Style for many reasons but most importantly to exemplify how to exude style from the inside out, without necessarily breaking the bank,” said Hampton.

One lucky fan at the Houston tour received a personal fashion consultation when she won the opportunity for Hampton to give her a “look for less”.

Hampton showed her how to take $100 and create three different looks for everyday wear from Forever 21.

Three others attendees won a pair of Deepa Gurani earrings, necklace and also a pair of eyewear from the Cynthia Bailey collection.

During the event, Hampton gave her fans a chance to ask questions that they’ve been dying to ask about her experience on the show and fashion tips.

“ I wanted to give my loyal fans a chance to get up close and personal with me, have girl talk, and reveal a few of my highly sought after fashion tips,” said Hampton.

“The event was an interactive experience that gave attendees the tips that we all have been dying to know about [her],” said Carlton Patton, an

aspiring actor. Patton took the tools of the trade learned from Hampton and will utilize them to further his career. Good luck Patton!

Hampton’s fashion style doesn’t stop with her tour but will soon be able to go home with fashionistas. Hampton is set to release her online shop soon where fans can get a chance to buy some of her clothing and shoes from season four and six of the show.

oring and bland could never be used to describe the drama that comedian Flame Monroe brings to any stage. Neither could the words be used to describe any pageant under the Essence International Pageantry System. This is why Flame and Essence are a perfect combination.

The two come together for a night full of fierce competition and high fashion at the 22nd Annual Mr. & Miss Essence International Pageant on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at the Crown Plaza River Oaks Hotel.

Started in 1993 by Bruce E. Chivers & Remmington Ross, the Essence International Pageantry System provides a platform for individuals to express themselves creatively and be empowered by their own God given talent and ability. Contestants from Chicago, Atlanta, New York, Virginia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, New Flame Monroe Jersey, Alabama, and Texas are all vying for the coveted titles of Mr. and Miss Having a front row seat for Essence (for professional entertainers), the entire night will be Flame Monroe, Mr. and Miss Essence International the emcee for the evening. features where she tickled America’s funny bone. Her career has slow down a bit in recent years now that she has become a single parent. Although her kids will always come first in her life, Flame still loves the stage and continues to work her career. This is why hosting the Mr. & Miss Essence International Pageant is so exciting.

Equally exciting for Flame is the opportunity to return to place she once called home. She lived in Houston’s southwest side for years.

MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital Going Gold for Childhood Cancer

he University of Texas MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital will recognize Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with activities and events geared toward patients and their families, staff and the community. The Be Bold, Go Gold campaign aims to raise awareness of childhood cancers and celebrate survivorship.

This time of year, most kids are starting or returning to school.

However, many children battling cancer are missing out on this memorable experience. At MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital, they’re making their own memories through playful diversions aimed to take their minds off the challenges of treatment.

The Be Bold, Go Gold campaign will kick off childhood cancer awareness with a carnival-themed event hosted by Stripes® Stores. Other fun and engaging activities throughout September are also planned.

“Children with cancer are often challenged with participating in normal activities like their peers. Doing so, such as going to camps, summer programs, school, or even interacting in public spaces may compromise their treatment,” said Cindy Schwartz, M.D., M.P.H., ad-interim division head of Pediatrics at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital. “Special events at the hospital help patients experience some

normalcy without compromising their care while they go through treatment.”

Each year, cancer touches the lives of more than 15,000 American children and adolescents under age 21.

At MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital, where approximately 2,000 children and adolescents are treated annually, patients have access to programs and activities that help them cope with cancer treatment. This year, many programs and support services will be featured during the Be Bold, Go Gold campaign, and patients, family and community members are invited to participate.

Bowie’s ticket matched all five of the white ball numbers drawn (18-21-25-28-29), but not the red Powerball number (16).

Mark’s Cuisine Launches Menu to Benefit Camp Say

ark’s American Cuisine i n t r o d u c e d Te a m S t y l e Magazine and a host of media guests to an evening of fine dining and wine tasting. In fact, we were treated

to Chef Mark’s 6-course tasting menu, supreme customer service, and an elegant atmosphere. Nick Barton who is the General Manager greeted each guest personally and described each course prior to its’ serving.

Our first dish was Oysters in Dune, which were fried gulf oysters,

displayed on a bed of grilled garlic root, sea bean, coriander, and corn shoots. My favorited part of this dish was the brine taste of the oysters, which combined well with the saltiness of the sea bean and garlic root. This delectable appetizer paired well with the white house wine that completed the plate by adding a light citrus finish to each bite.

The next sample was the Beef and Watermelon; in my view

this dish was the show stopper of the savory plates. This was beef short rib, watermelon, radish, smoked halloumi, watercress and a cayenne gastrique.

The meat was tender, lean, and had slight punch at the end thanks to the cayenne. It paired well with the House Red which balanced the sweetness

of the watermelon and sharpness of the pepper.

Moving forward to the fowl part of the meal, we were treated to Quail in Vegetable Garden which was grilled with carrots, squash, and fennel toffee.

I absolutely loved the medley of vegetables in this plate along with the fennel toffee and roasted meat. This dish pairs well with either a white or red table wine.

F i n a l l y, w e wrapped up our evening with the dessert course which consisted of Grilled Peach Ice Cream, with Fol Epi, Brioche, Thyme and Honey. Frozen Foi Gras, followed the ice cream, this was my favorite of the sweet plates; it was rich, creamy, and smooth to the taste.

The sweet dishes concluded with Mark’s handmade box of chocolates which I saved to taste on the following day.

Now that everyone’s mouth is watering, please visit Mark’s American Cuisine located at 1658 Westheimer, in Houston, Texas. During the month of August they were offering a special priced lunch 3-course for $29 and the

6-course for $75. Moreover, Mark’s donated $5 from each lunch sold as well as $10 from each sold dinner to SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young.

The Alamo Gets Major Funding

he Alamo will soon undergo a major facelift thanks to the $32 million that has been approved for the project by Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush.

Pilot Entrepreneurship Program Aims to Train Black Business Owners for Success

he University of Phoenix School of Business aims to fuel the growth of the Black business owner by backing a new entrepreneurial education and training program with a $500,000 grant. The pilot program, in partnership with the U. S. Black Chambers, Inc., (USBC), is set to begin Jan. 1, 2016. It targets African-American small business owners, including USBC members, in various cities across the U. S.
