ompletion is not always a word that is so definite and permanent.

Most commonly completion means the job is finished. One’s work is done. However, high school graduation is not one of life’s occurrences that I consider as complete. It is one step towards something greater. Whether that is college, trade school, or entering the work force, having your high school diploma is a step towards launching one’s professional career in life. It is an achievement to be most proud of and for most high school students it is the peak accomplishment of their young life. Thus by far, reaching that juncture at any phase is noteworthy.

There are a handful of students from each high school who made some sacrifices of missing out on parties, watching that extra hour of TV, or whatever they had to forgo to get in some extra studying. Their extra push allowed them to shot to the top of their class to be named valedictorian.

n May 27, President Obama will become the first sitting president to visit Hiroshima, Japan, where at the end of World War II the U.S. became the first and only country to drop an atomic bomb. The president will use the occasion to revive attention on the need to rid the world of nuclear weapons.

Immediately, the critics assailed the president for going on an “apology tour.” The White House sought to calm the furor, assuring reporters that the president would not use the word “sorry.”

“We said that this is not about issuing an apology,” Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters on Thursday.

Why not apologize? The president will visit the 30-acre Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, located directly under the spot where the bomb

President Obama Must Recommit to Eliminating Nuclear Weapon exploded, with a museum displaying the charred belongings of the 100,000 people who perished, as everything with one mile of the bomb blast was entirely wiped out. The short inscription on the park’s memorial arch reads, in part: “We shall not repeat the evil.”

The United States, thankfully, is the last country to have used nuclear weapons in wartime. We dropped them on Hiroshima and Nagasaki even as Japan was on the verge of surrender.

That the bomb was dropped reflected the savagery of that war -- from the secret attack on Pearl Harbor to the horrid battles in Okinawa and elsewhere.

Massive firebombing had already devastated Tokyo, in the single most destructive bombing attack in history.

Some scholars believe President Harry S. Truman made the decision less to bring Japan to its knees than to put the world -- and particularly the Russians -- on notice of America’s power. But you don’t have to see the bombing as criminal to agree that this evil must not be repeated -- and to apologize that it should ever have been unleashed on humans in the first place.

But as Elton John sang, “Sorry seems to be the hardest word to say.”

As young energetic legislators with records of results in their own districts, Reynolds and Johnson backed by family and friends savored their hard won wins.

U.S. security strategy still claims the right to use nuclear weapons first, a dangerous and dumb refusal to limit their use to actual deterrence. The U.S. just activated anti-ballistic missile system in Romania that the Russians say violates the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Agreement. President Obama has signed off on a modernization of both nuclear weapons and their delivery systems with a projected cost of $1 trillion over three decades that could very likely to trigger a new arms race.

“As the only nation ever to use nuclear weapons,” President Obama has argued, “the United States has a moral obligation to continue to lead the way in eliminating them.” With or without an apology, he should use the occasion of visiting Hiroshima to once more recommit to that goal, so that no one will ever again be victims of that evil.

The visit returns the president to the solemn pledge he made in Prague soon after coming to office. He reaffirmed “America’s commitment to a world without nuclear weapons,” arguing that their very existence posed a threat that they might once more be used. He pledged to make their elimination -- complete and general nuclear disarmament -- not just a wistful dream, but a central goal of our national security policy.

Under Obama, there has been some progress towards that goal.

The 2010 START agreement with Russia limited the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads to fewer than 2,000. The role of nuclear weapons in U.S. military strategy was reduced.

The historic 2015 agreement with Iran -- which has already resulted in Iran’s surrender of nearly all of its nuclear material -- gave new life to nonproliferation efforts. Obama helped organize pressure that succeeded in reducing the dispersal of bomb-grade nuclear fuel.

But now informed observers argue that the risks of a nuclear disaster are getting worse. Tensions are rising with both Russia and China, with

He followed that victory with a win of 53 to 46 percent of the vote Tuesday for the full term as the first new representative in Turner’s home district since 1989.

Turner swore in Johnson last week for the interim.

Johnson has lived all his life in his north Houston, House District and served three terms representing much of it on Houston City Council. “I’m grateful to God, my family and this community.

Think Like an Entrepreneur, Act Like a CEO

ometimes, your job is everything you want it to be.

At other times, your workweek feels like it’s ballooned-to-bursting – especially when you’re overloaded, overly-irritated, and overwrought, which seems to be happening more and more lately. So how do you deal with thorny workplace situations without making things worse? “Think Like an Entrepreneur, Act Like a CEO” by Beverly E. Jones might help.

Sixty years ago, back when your grandfather brought home the bacon, the way to get ahead was to be loyal to The Company. Working at the same job your whole life was common then, but now, says Jones, it “seems quaint.”

Today’s employees can expect to have a very non-linear career that could take them to multiple cities and workplace cultures. For that, you don’t need loyalty as much as you need adaptability and resilience. The good news is, you can learn both.

Take, for instance, your first day on the job: Jones says not to assume anything. Instead, plan for that first-day-worst-day and be prepared to “work like crazy” to establish and nurture a good impression on your boss and co-workers.

Since “every organization of any significant size is a collection of smaller operations,” cultivate the attitude of a CEO. Act as though you’re running your “own little enterprise.” Prepare for becoming an entrepreneur by first becoming an “intrapreneur.”

Learn to listen; it’s the number-one “super career skill.” Ask your boss about her expectations.

Ask your co-workers for work-tips. Resist the urge to talk about yourself and just listen.

Know your personal brand and add “leadership” to it. Learn how to network the proper

way, and do it everywhere you go. Practice accepting compliments graciously, know when to give kudos and say “thank you,” and learn how to smart-brag. Get rid of “up-talking” and complaining about your physical ailments; and pay attention to the things you say, to avoid unfair ageism or sounding too immature. Learn how to manage your manager and handle impossible co-workers. And know when to move on because you can love work again – even if it’s at a different job.

When you’re having problems at work, there’s a short list of things you can do: you can grit your teeth, take antacids, bonk your head on your desk… or read “Think Like an Entrepreneur, Act Like a CEO.”

For mind and body, that last tip is probably best because author Beverly E. Jones really does offer soothingly civil, workable ideas that can make your life and your career better, both short-term and longterm. What’s in this book are things you can do today, whether you sit in a cubicle or corner office – though you may be surprised to note that many of Jones’ recommendations are habits you already have, but just need to refine.

There’s no reason you must read things in order in this helpful, can-do book, so feel free to bounce around the chapters. Read a little here, absorb some there, and “Think Like an Entrepreneur, Act Like a CEO” might be everything you need it to be.

Russell Simmons Repays RushCard Holders, Pushes for Credit Reforms

ussell Simmons is just starting to regain a little normalcy in his life.

He’s back at yoga and the hip-hop and business mogul is even able to run some errands without worrying about whether a disgruntled RushCard holder might verbally attack him or worse.

Simmons never hung his head despite mounting – if unfair – criticism that rocked the music impresario when his innovative pre-paid RushCard experienced a computer glitch last fall that prevented hundreds of thousands of card holders from accessing their money.

“I took full responsibility. It’s my card and I made sure to reach out to card holders personally and I reached into my own pocket to help people with their rent, their medicine or whatever emergency that may have come up,” Simmons said.

“All I knew how to do was to make good on it and try to make the people that were damaged whole again,” he said.

Simmons has done even more and he continues his push to have the underbanked and the underserved benefit.

“My mission is to eventually see that when someone pays their rent on time, pays their light bill on time, that these things go on their credit reports,” Simmons said. “It should be and if I can’t get regulators and the credit bureaus to do it, then I will have to start my own credit bureau.”

If that sounds like a bit of a stretch, Simmons points to his starting the RushCard as proof that real change can happen. “I was first, no one else did this until I came out with my card,” he said, noting that he’s not only the face of RushCard, but along with his American Express and other items in his wallet is

his own RushCard that he regularly uses.

“Look, we were the ones who invented this and what I don’t like is when people refer to us as a celebrity company,” Simmons said. “All of what American Express is doing, all of what Chase Manhattan did, we did first. We’re a virtual bank.

The other thing is that we didn’t build this company to make money when we started and, really, I didn’t think it would become a business but it did and I go to work every day to try and improve the service we provide.”

Simmons said his fight for credit building is an uphill battle, but it’s a battle that can be won.

It’s as much part of his life as yoga, he said.

“You pay rent every month for eight years on a RushCard, why can’t you get a mortgage? I think that’s a travesty. I think a lot of the big companies like MasterCard, the Visas, the others that do the processing and infrastructure work; a lot of us could come together and force them to accept this information on credit reports of the world,” Simmons said.

As Simmons pushes for changes in policies in the credit industry, he’s leaving the door open for starting his own credit reporting agency.

computer glitch – which Simmons still refers to as a “tsunami” – the business leader provided free service to card holders for five months, sacrificing all of his company’s profits to do so. He also reached a more than $20 million settlement from a class action lawsuit filed against RushCard, because of the glitch.

“I’m glad to do it. I had put aside $25 million,” Simmons said, noting that the card isn’t just for communities that have been forgotten and underserved by banks. “There’s no reason why small businesses can’t use a Rush Business Card. We just added a feature, just now where if you lose your card, you can turn your card off instantly through an app.

Then you can turn it back on.”

Simmons continued: “This card should be for affluent people as well as underserved community members and it should be the wave of the future for millennials. This is the bank for millennials and the growth rate for our company is 70 percent millennials, when it used to be single mothers. Millennials who don’t like banks are coming in our direction and we haven’t even begun the branding exercise to speak to them.”

Simmons said that he didn’t mind paying the $20 million settlement.

“I don’t mind paying the $20 million. I don’t mind that that was our cost. I am going to spend a lot more money than that in the community, in my peacekeeping programs, in RUSH and art education,” he said.

Simmons said so much more will soon be announced and he’s confident that RushCard holders and others will be pleased.

“We are going to be in the community in a way that we’ve never been,” Simmons said.

ver 400 college-bound seniors received more than $7.5 million in scholarships from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. These primarily Houston-area scholarship recipients will attend various Texas colleges and universities in the fall using $7,569,000 from seven of the Show’s scholarship

program. Among the 423 scholars, nearly 43 percent will be the first in their families to attend college, and more than 25 percent of the recipients are the first in their families to graduate high school. The 238 Metropolitan and 114 Opportunity scholarships are awarded to students in Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Humble, Liberty, Montgomery and Waller counties.

Apple Tortellini Salad Servings: 6 to 8 Dressing:

3 tablespoons Tree Top Frozen Concentrate

Apple Juice, thawed

3 tablespoons light corn syrup

2 teaspoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

2 teaspoons garlic salt

Ground pepper to taste Salad:

9 ounces cheese-filled tortellini

2 cups sliced apples (approximately

2 medium apples)

2 cups shredded salad greens

1 cup sliced fresh strawberries

1/2 cup thinly sliced celery

1/2 cup sliced scallions

2 tablespoons toasted pine nuts (optional)

To prepare dressing, combine apple juice concentrate, corn syrup, brown sugar, vinegar, garlic salt and pepper. Cover dressing and refrigerate.

To prepare salad, cook tortellini, drain and cool by rinsing pasta under cold water. Shake gently to drain thoroughly. In a large bowl, combine tortellini, apples, salad greens, strawberries, celery and scallions. Toss salad gently with chilled dressing. Serve chilled. If desired, sprinkle with pine nuts.

1 cup Tree Top Apple Juice

1 pint strawberries, hulled, sliced and frozen

1 banana, sliced and frozen

1 apple, peeled, cored, sliced and frozen

6 ounces vanilla yogurt

1 teaspoon vanilla

Put all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. Pour into ice pop forms or paper cups. Place ice pop sticks in center and freeze, inverted, for 3 hours or until solid. Keep frozen until ready to serve.

ou don’t need superpowers to be a hero when it comes to stroke, you just need to pay attention to the risk factors and know the warning signs.

Stroke is largely preventable and treatable. The best way to beat a stroke is to never have one – about 80 percent of strokes are preventable. The second best way to beat a stroke is to identify one immediately when it occurs and call 911.

For American Stroke Month this May, the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored

by Medtronic, offers five things everyone should know to be a Stroke Hero and stop the nation’s No. 5 killer in its tracks.

1. Anyone Can Have a Stroke (Even Superheroes) Some stroke patients don’t “look the part” and they may not have traditional stroke risk factors like high blood pressure. Stroke is more common in older people, but young adults, teens, children, babies and even the unborn can be victims.

2. High Blood Pressure is Public Enemy # 1 for Stroke About 80 million Americans have high blood pressure, yet about half with the

condition do not have it under control.

Three out of four people who have a first stroke report blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm Hg, making blood pressure the most important controllable risk factor for stroke. 3. Stroke Targets by Color While stroke is a leading cause of death

Stroke is Largely Treatable Clot-busting drugs and medical devices like stent retrievers have made stroke largely treatable, but most patients need to get to an appropriate hospital to be evaluated and treated within 3 to 4.5 hours of the first symptom. With nearly 2 million brain cells dying every minute during a stroke, there’s no time to phone a friend, take a nap, or wait untilUber stops surging. Calling 911 is the best call for stroke.

5. Friends Usually Save Friends from Stroke You’ve heard the saying “Fast friends”.

If you’re having a stroke, that’s exactly who you need nearby. Two out of three times, it’s a bystander making the decision to call 911 or seek treatment on behalf of someone suffering a stroke. aks Fifth Avenue is an iconic store known for fashion and they have just raised the bar with the design of their new restaurant, 51fifteen Cuisine and Cocktails. Calling on the multi-award winning interior designer and TV personality Nina Magon of Contour Interior Design, the concept behind the restaurant is like none other in Houston with mid-century modern pieces with a classic color scheme. There are lots of design surprises for the customer to have a different experience in every seating area of the restaurant. A celebration, Carnaval De 51Fifteen, was held to show off the design and to benefit Dec My Room. This conference featured doctors, social workers, mental health professionals, and local community leaders in order to discuss health and wellness initiatives for families affected by sickle cell disease. he Port of Houston Authority continues to deflect the softness in the upstream oil and gas sector “due to a sound execution of its business model,” Executive Director Roger Guenther shared in his report to the Port Commission during its regular monthly meeting. Container operations showed strength, while steel imports, primarily tubular products, followed the downward trend seen by both Texas and the nation. The Port Authority saw only a moderate decline of 2 percent in total TEU in its container business versus a very robust period through April last year, Guenther reported.

Pearland Lumberyard Burned After Being Business 8 Decades News Fix Houston

A

ccording to News Fix Houston, the M&M Lumber yard stood in business for 80 years in Pearland. The fire broke out just before midnight when crews arrived it was already completely engulfed in flames. The fire was not put out in a timely matter due to lack of fire hydrants. No other injuries were reported. As for the cause, crews are talking to the employee on property and arson is investigating.

McDonald’s Worker Wage Protests Shut Down Company Headquarters Reuters

eports indicate that for third time McDonald’s has temporarily closed its headquarters as workers continue to protest for higher wages. Workers plan to show up in large numbers at McDonald’s share holders meeting to demand for $15 hourly wages and the right to form a union. McDonald’s reps said security would be highly visible.

he world’s largest brewer, AnheuserBusch InBev, gained EU antitrust approval for its $100 billion-plus acquisition of SABMiller on condition it sell almost

all of SABMiller’s beer business in Europe according to Reuters. AB InBev has already agreed to sell SABMiller’s Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime beer brands to Japan’s Asahi Group Holdings Ltd and to divest eastern European assets, three people familiar with the matter. The takeover will give it a third of the global beer market, selling twice as much beer as its nearest rival Heineken.

Under Armour Signs Record Deal with UCLA for $280 Million CNN

U

CLA just landed the biggest collegiate apparel deal ever. The $280 million deal with Under Armour (UA) will last for 15 years, industry sources told CNNMoney. The news was first reported by ESPN. UCLA has been outfitted by Adidas for years.

However, the two sides were in talks to renew that deal but were unable to reach a new agreement by the deadline. The new deal makes UCLA the 35th Division 1 school that Under Armour has an all-school partnership with.
