P

resident Obama’s historic trip to Havana, Cuba -- the first American president to visit since Calvin Coolidge in 1928 -- opens the door to a new era in relations not only with Cuba, but also with our neighbors across the hemisphere.

Extensive press coverage of the trip will feature the President’s meeting with Cuban leader Raul Castro, the Tuesday baseball game pitting the Cuban national team against Tampa Bay, the president’s meetings with business leaders and with Cuban dissidents.

We’ll get pictures of aged Chevy’s held together by duct tape, of lovely but crumbling Havana mansions, of Cuba’s lively culture and its widespread poverty.

Cuba surely is a poor country.

Its government, while still enjoying popular support, is a far remove from a democracy. Freedom of speech and assembly are greater than most realize,

Cuba Through a Looking Glass but still severely policed. But much of what we think about Cuba is upside down, and inside out.

First, in many ways, the president’s initiative to normalize relations with Cuba isn’t so much ending their isolation as ending ours.

Cuba has enjoyed good and growing relations with our neighbors across the hemisphere for years. In recent years, those countries have threatened to exclude the U.S. from hemispheric meetings if we continued to demand that Cuba’s exclusion. We have sought to isolate Cuba for over 50 years; we ended up isolating ourselves.

Second, for many across the world, Cuba, not the U.S., has been on the right side of history. Cuba stood with Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress while the U.S. was supporting the apartheid government and labeling Mandela a terrorist. When South Africa invaded Angola in the mid-1970s to block the independence movement there, it was Cuba, not the U.S. that sent troops to force South Africa’s withdrawal. One of the first visits Mandela made after he was freed was to Havana to thank Fidel Castro for his support, hailing the Cuban revolution as “a source of inspiration to all freedom-loving peoples.”

Similarly, for many across Africa and Latin America, Cuba is known for supplying doctors and teachers, aiding in the development

of nations emerging from colonialism.

America, too often, has been either allied with the former colonialists or hostile to the emerging independent movements.

Third, while some of Cuba’s poverty is self-inflicted, some is also the direct result of 50 years of the embargo.

Cuba is a small island, 90 miles off our coast, without its own oil. Before the revolution, tourism was a leading industry; foreign investors were central to the economy. The revolution upended that order. The embargo severed those and any new ties. In the Cold War years, the Soviet Union alone provided a lifeline for the regime. Since the end of the Cold War, more and more countries have chafed at the American embargo and begun to deal with Cuba.

Fourth, most popular leaders in South America see Cuba as an example of proud, national independence. In many ways, our hostility to Castro elevated his stature across the world. Emerging populist leaders in South America don’t plan to imitate Cuban socialism, which is being slowly reformed. But they are envious of Cuba’s health care and education systems, which provide Cubans with a standard of health and educational opportunity far above most developing countries.

Fifth, Cuba has not been closed to us; we have been closed to Cuba. The Cubans have been looking for a dialogue for years. When I went to Cuba in 1984,

I met with Fidel Castro and even took him to church. We negotiated the release of 22 American and 26 Cuban political prisoners. He was ready for a dialogue then, but the U.S. continued its no-talk policy until President Obama finally launched his historic initiative.

Reform will come slowly in a Cuba that is still proud of its revolution and anxious to preserve its gains in health care and education. Its foreign policy will remain proudly independent.

The regime remains on guard against U.S. efforts to undermine it from within.

But reform will come slowly here also. To this day, Congress refuses to lift an embargo that punishes a small neighbor off our coast. To this day, our arrogance and ideological blinders make it hard for us to see Cuba whole. The president has opened the door. Increased travel, cultural exchanges and the beginnings of business investment will push it open further. Most Americans already support normal relations and an end to a policy that has failed for over half a century. And one day, we can hope, even the ideologues and zealots in the Congress will get the message.

I want to and will listen to and work with parents, teachers, businesses, economic development teams and all area elected officials to continue growing Fort Bend as one of the most admired schools systems anywhere,” she said.

Shirley Rose has been serious about Fort Bend ISD since starting her passion for public education as a public school teacher and administrator, involved parent with two students and concerned taxpayer in Texas’ seventh largest, fast growing and most ethnically diverse ISD 37 years ago. May 7th, her name is on the district wide ballot for FBISD School Board Pos. 7.

“My lifetime hero has been my homeroom teacher Helen Humphrey from southwest Houston’s Madison High School. After failing her typing class, she encouraged me to become a straight A student and consider college as I hadn’t before,” said Rose, who earned University of Houston undergraduate and master degrees as the first of six children in her family to complete college before later completing her Texas A&M doctorate.

However, the robbing of one family’s Easter baskets didn’t sit right with two Houston Police Department officers.

So much so that they took matters into their own hands. KHOU reports after leaving the family briefly, officers Timothy Hicks and Michael Gunter drove to the local Walmart and used their own money to replace the Easter baskets.

Tanner was considered his top lieutenant in the operation. Wallis has an additional charge of organized crime activity. According to Abc13.com, Wallis ran six brothels with about 20 women out of the Galleria area with each woman giving him approximately $400 every seven days. Incarceration Nations: A Journey to Justice in Prisons Around the World

ou do the crime, you do the time.

If you’re willing, in other words, to misbehave or break the law, you need to be willing to face consequences. But what if the crime doesn’t match the punishment? What if your sentence doesn’t have a period at the end? Or what if, as you’ll see in “Incarceration Nations” by Baz Dreisinger, you didn’t commit a crime at all?

As a white Jewish English professor who focuses on African American cultural studies and is passionate about working with about-to-be-released prisoners, Baz Dreisinger says she’s used to surprising people. Her “peculiar blend of identities” is unique – and so was her idea of a two-year journey to visit prisons around the world.

The statistics that spurred her are “devastating:” More than 2 million people are behind bars in America, making the U.S. the “world’s largest jailer.” There are more African Americans in jail today than were enslaved 166 years ago; one in fourteen black men is incarcerated in the States. American prisons hold 160,000 “lifers,” as compared to fewer than sixty lifers in Australia.

America’s prison model, says Dreisinger, is exported around the world. But the world, as she discovered, altered those plans.

In Rwanda, where violence between Hutus and Tutsis horrified us a generation ago, she discovered that bribery and corruption are “rampant” but prison programs bring criminals and victims together to attempt forgiveness.

In South Africa, in the prison where Nelson Mandela was held, she learned that apologies are nice, but a phone call to a prisoner’s mother does even more.

In Uganda, where overcrowding leads to

horrific conditions and corruption is “endemic,” she learns that prisoners are hungry for beauty in words.

In Thailand, she toured women’s prisons where guards are required to know women by their names and faces, not their numbers. She visited Australia, which began as a penal colony; Singapore, a “Disneyland with a death penalty” and an exciting reentry program; and Norway, where prisoners can “spend up to half” their sentences off-premises.

When “Incarceration Nations” first crossed my desk, I expected to read horror story after horror story but, surprisingly, that’s not at all what I got. Instead, there’s a lot in here about recidivism, reentry, and forgiveness.

While I suppose one could argue that, in the making of this book, author Baz Dreisinger saw only what officials wanted her to see, there’s much more to this story: Dreisinger was nevertheless still able to draw statistical parallels between American prisons and, say, Singapore’s, where recidivism rates are far less than in the U.S.; or Norway’s, where prisoners are jailed near their home communities. Furthermore, Dreisinger uses her experiences as the founder of the Prison-to-College Pipeline program in New York to show how punishment is more effective if there’s a glint of hope tied up in it.

This is not a soft-on-crime book; instead, it’s more a meditation on making prisons more productive, instead of merely a warehouse for individuals. And if that’s a concern of yours, then “Incarceration Nations” is truly worth your time.

Kidney Disease and Children: Put Prevention Into Practice

idney disease is not a health problem reserved for adults: children may have kidney disease or health problems that can increase their chance of developing kidney disease as adults.

Health problems or conditions present at birth are the main cause of kidney disease in children.

Health issues that may begin early in life and continue into adulthood, such as obesity, could lead to kidney disease later on.

The body has two kidneys, which filter extra water and waste from blood to make urine. They also help control blood pressure and make hormones the body needs to stay healthy. Kidney disease prevents the kidneys from filtering blood as they should. This damage can cause waste to build up in the body, leading to serious health problems.

A child with kidney disease may have pain in the back, side or lower belly; frequent dehydration; burning or pain when urinating or swelling in the feet, ankles or legs. Some children have no symptoms that are obvious to their parents or caregivers, but a doctor can detect problems during a regular medical checkup.

When Children Are Overweight or Obese

Overweight and obese children and teenagers have a greater chance of developing health problems as they get older, including kidney disease. About one in three children and teens in the United States are overweight or obese.

Childhood overweight and obesity rates are higher among African Americans, putting them at greater risk for health problems, including kidney

disease. For example, about one in four black youths are considered obese compared with one in six white youths.

Although it can take years for diabetes to cause kidney disease, research shows that more 20- to 39-year-old African Americans are developing kidney disease, which may be due to more people becoming obese and being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at younger ages.

Support healthy eating habits. Be a role model for healthy eating by choosing healthy snacks and cooking meals that include vegetables, fruits, lean meats and whole grains. Ask your children to go grocery shopping with you and let them help plan and prepare family meals and pack their own healthy lunches. Try to eat together as a family as often as possible.

Preventing Kidney Disease: What You Can Do?

If you think your child may have kidney disease, ask your health care provider about getting him or her tested. Providers test for kidney disease with a urine test that checks for albumin, a type of protein in urine, and a blood test that shows how well the kidneys are filtering. Detecting and managing the disease early is critical to delaying or preventing kidney failure.

You can help protect your children from kidney disease and its causes, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, later in life by having you entire family adopt a healthy lifestyle. Healthy eating habits and regular physical activity can help you, your children and other family members maintain a healthy weight and reduce the chances of developing health problems. Here are some tips for getting started: (1) Get moving. (2) Encourage your children to be more active. (3) Limit TV and computer time to no more than two hours a day and ask your children to suggest ideas for being active instead. (4) You can involve the

2016 Yukon Denali XL: Every Bell and Whistle Needed

n every vehicle the driver wants to feel like they are in charged of the road and turning heads while doing it! In fact, in the GMC Yukon, Yukon XL (pictured) it does just that. Amanda Edwards: Making Tough Decisions

ith just a few days shy of being in office for 100 days Houston City Councilwoman Amanda Edwards has been hard at work with a lofty agenda. First impressions tell me that though her plate is full she is managing the needs of the job by “solving for the problems of tomorrow by making the hard decisions now.”

I tried to get her to grade herself on her job performance thus for. Trick question she said. Although I didn’t get that grade, Councilwoman Edwards did tell Houston Style the kind of leader she is trying to be. “I have been the kind of leader who has had my door open. I think I understand what I don’t know and so therefore I am willing to continue to learn and grow which is a positive. I think I have been that type of leader who is very thoughtful, a critical thinker, and who has tried to think outside the box.” With a laugh, she reminded me that the class is not over so grades are not out yet.

Her feet are now firmly planted in the interworking of city operations making her top priorities centered on city finances, economic development

and transportation. The city budget problems have been looming for sometime now. Councilwoman Edwards is the Vice Chair of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Committee so she has been intricately involved in reviewing the 2017 budget. Her projections with Mayor Sylvester Turner and the committee predict the shortcomings of the city to be an estimated $160 million so they are doing their best to streamline the budget in an efficient manner. That will include some layoffs with the estimated number at this time being 40 to be laid off. “There have been a lot of behind the scenes efforts to see and identify ways in which we can fill that gap and do it in a way that is thoughtful.

The last thing you want to do is under mind some of your goals or programs that you want to stick with or push forward for your city to move forward.”

One of her personal goals is to increase economic development opportunities with two focuses.

Of course identifying business opportunities are always key but also neighbor revitalization is her on radar. It is the later of the two that has become an administration priority. Her office has been working

to identify those areas in need of work the most. She actually had several meetings scheduled on the day of our interview to discuss just that. The plans for economic growth are in the beginning planning stages so things will develop down the line.

Lastly in her three key focuses will bring a sigh of relief to Houstonians’ traffic woes. Transportation in this city is short of a nightmare on a daily basis and it becomes even more so with the major events that we have been hosting like the Final Four this weekend. Having to move Houstonians, coupled with an influx of visitors, is a determinant to our city because if visitors are in traffic instead of stores we are losing financially. Houstonians in traffic is not productive as well. Houston’s problems in transportation stem from that the fact that the city does not have jurisdiction over most things related to transit so needed conversations regarding that were not being had. With that being identified, Councilwoman Edwards expressed, “The conversation around transportation in our city has changed drastically in a very short time.” Mayor Turner and the transportation policy committee, which Councilwoman Edwards is an alternate member, have been having those conversations in an effort to get the city multi modes of transportation to get Houstonians and visitors moving.

This is another major project in the planning staging.

This administration is still very young in this new term but they have their eyes on the future to make Houston the best city. It will take some time as they continue to peel back what was done in the past and what did and didn’t work and make adjustments or changes to get things to work. Councilwoman Edwards is confident Mayor Turner is the man to do it. Describing him as a mayor who truly listens and evaluates all aspects of problems. “I have nothing but positive experiences in working with Mayor Turner because he has been so open.” Edwards continued, “A lot of people hear you but he truly listens to what you say.”

Before ending our interview I decided to get candidate with Council Edwards to learn more about the woman behind the smile. I can tell you that whenever she can Councilwoman Edwards will impart fun. Her life’s mantra “live life and try to enjoy it as best you can.” She tells me she loves what she does so that is fun for her and she can have fun in some strange ways. Most of the times these days she is at the office or an event but on rare occasions she finds time to slip away to the gym, which is relaxing for her. Although she doesn’t do much of it now, she loves to travel. Her favorite pleasures are ice cream and gelato, specifically Tres le Che Vanilla Bean from Sweet Cup. Her favorite movie is an oldie, “The Devil’s Advocate.” She has no pets but has a struggling garden. And the last fun fact about her is that she is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Though this is just her beginning into a political career she is not closed minded to going further into politics but that is not her goal. Overall, she just wants to be in positions where she can make the biggest impact. This is why as a City Councilwoman she is so passionate about her work for citizens. “No decision is ever made without thoughtfulness or concern for all Houstonians.”

City of Houston and Mayor Sylvester Turner Turned the Lives of Houstonians Around with New Resource Fair

M

ayor Sylvester Turner wants to put Houstonians back to work. He is starting with citizens who having the most difficult time finding work.

This sector of people may have been dealt some bad hands but they shouldn’t be counted out. The new program, Turnaround Houston, was kicked off this week just to embrace their needs to get them employed and get their lives turned back around.

Held this past at the Sunnyside Multi Service Center, Turnaround Houston is a series of job fairs proving to be a helpful resource to get Houstonians moving and working again. The brainchild of Mayor Sylvester Turner, this project is a part of his March on Crime initiative and will make a clear change for the citizens of the city of Houston by offering job training, resume writing, tattoo removal, social service agencies, educational institutions, counseling and intervention according to the press release.

“There are Houstonians who have difficulty securing employment due to a variety of reasons which may include a lack of education, prior criminal history, poverty, mental health issues and a lack of positive influences,” said Mayor Turner.

“There is a part of our city that is in dire need of assistance and it’s our responsibility to ensure that they are plugged into vital resources and become a part of our city’s success. With the launch of Turnaround Houston, we want to eliminate the barriers to employment by offering a roadmap to a brighter future.”

This Saturday’s program was the first of many programs that Mayor Turner will hold citywide. Each fair will host workshops on resume creation and interview tips. Participants can also learn how to start their own businesses and hear the success stories of Houstonians who have received a second chance.

Vendors from all areas aligned the walls ranging from tech training, youth empowerment programs, homeless resources for helping the chronic homeless, child care resources, vocational rehabilitation, youth aspiring professional projects, on the job training, recovery and support, adult online courses for high school completion, job corps, hope for veterans, and construction/ basic apprentice training, health care services, all with the goal of helping people help themselves. Such companies attending and offering help, hiring, training and preparing people for success and being hired were The United Way, Career And Recovery Resources, Houston Community College, Job Corps, Harmony House, Metro, Houston Area Urban League, ITT Technical Institute, H-E-B, Gateway to Care, Hispanic Partnership for Health and Insurance Coverage, My Brother’s Keeper Outreach Center, Hope for US Veterans, The Houston Lawyers Referral Service, The Way Home, Harris County Housing Resource Center, Recovery Support Center, Programa De Rehabilitacion Vocational CCC Child Care Center, Career Gear, Dress for Success, Franklin Beauty School and The City of Houston Health Care Department.

hey can’t stop smiling, they won’t stop smiling. There’s no gym because it’s an elementary school but the cafeteria has a stage in it. Some of the kids can’t stop staring at him because he’s the biggest man they’ve ever seen. Some of the kids can’t stop staring at the people he’s brought with him because they’re the most famous people they’ve ever seen. “Reading With the Pro’s” is something Wade Smith and friends do monthly.

Since his retirement after a 12 year career in the NFL last year he has not spent the time idling away. Though he misses his teammates and the game he has played his entire life he is using it to make a difference. His first children’s book which is co-wrote with Jayme Lamm, “Smitty Hits the Play Books,” is just an extension of the work he is already doing in his hometown of Dallas and his adopted city of Houston.

The Wade Smith Foundation was born out of the ex-offensive lineman’s love for reading. What started as speaking at schools on his off days has turned into scholarship programs, celebrities, politicians and a weekend dedicated to not only raising literacy awareness but giving back to the community that helped shaped him.

ollywood and food lovers are buzzing over the multiple reports confirming that the iconic Los Angeles restaurant Roscoe’s Chicken N Waffles is suffering finically.

The parent company of the food establishment has already filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy, claiming a debt of $7 million. Of that $3 million is owed just to employees alone. One employee sued last year over back wages.

Snoop Dogg said he is not about to let them go down like. TMZ caught Snoop Dogg’s response and expression at the news. “I guess Ima have to buy it, man and make it Snoop Dogg’s Chicken and Waffles.” It remains to be known if he was joking or not.
