COMMENTARY

Jesse Jackson

National Writer

ast week, House Speaker Paul Ryan denounced Donald Trump for playing footsie with David Duke and the Ku Klux Klan, saying Republicans are “the party of Lincoln.” The speaker is to be applauded for denouncing Trump’s dog whistle racial politics, but he’s got his history wrong. Today’s Republican Party is a far remove from the party of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln fought to save the Union, and after the Confederate surrender he moved to reconcile warring states in order “to build a more perfect Union.” Lincoln’s party introduced and ratified the 13th Amendment, legally ending slavery. Today, 20 percent of Republicans who voted for Donald Trump in South Carolina disapprove of Lincoln’s executive order freeing the slaves, according to a YouGov poll, and 70 percent want the Confederate flag to fly over the State House. The Republican Party in Lincoln’s day introduced and ratified

Party of Lincoln? Not By A Long Shot the 14th Amendment, guaranteeing equal protection under the law. Today’s Republican Party -- the party that Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and John Kasich are fighting so hard to lead -- opposes any steps that actually promote equal protection or fairness. They oppose affirmative action, economic set-asides and special consideration for programs for the needy. They oppose equal pay for women. They oppose equal rights for the LGBT community. The Republican Party in Lincoln’s day introduced and ratified the 15th Amendment outlawing discrimination in voting on the basis of race, color or previous condition of servitude. Today’s Republican Party introduced literally hundreds of legislative bills in 49 states after 2011 to enforce new voting restrictions that would disproportionately impact minorities, women, workers, young people, seniors and the disabled. Today’s Republican Party praises the conservatives on the Supreme Court who gutted the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder, and won’t hold hearings or allow a vote on legislation to fix the damage done. The Republican Party in Lincoln’s day built the national railroads, even as the Civil War raged. It created the land grant colleges, helping to open access to millions to higher education. Lincoln constantly called for “internal improvements” and championed the rights of free labor, as opposed to slave labor. Today’s Republican Party has systematically favored tax cuts for the

rich while slashing investments in areas vital to our future from infrastructure to education. In Lincoln’s day, Democrats were the party of the South, the party of Jefferson Davis, leader of the Confederate revolt. Democrats were slaveholders. Democrats flocked to the Confederacy and opposed the Reconstruction after the Civil War. Democrats became the party of segregation, opposing the civil rights movements. Orville Faubus, Lester Maddox, George Wallace and Bull Connor were all Democrats. But after national leaders of the Democratic Party began to support civil rights for African-Americans, blacks began to switch parties. When Lyndon Johnson worked with Dr. King and others to pass the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act and the war on poverty, blacks flooded the Democratic Party. And in 1964, Republicans nominated Barry Goldwater, who opposed the Civil Rights Act. Strom Thurmond led Dixiecrats out of the Democratic Party. Richard Nixon’s Southern strategy sought to consolidate Republican gains in the South. Ronald Reagan opened his campaign in Philadelphia, Miss., infamous for the murders of civil rights workers Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney, talking about states’ rights. The heirs of Jefferson Davis joined the Republican Party en masse. And Democrats became the party of diversity, the heirs to Abraham Lincoln. Trump’s dog whistle racial signaling is not new to today’s

Republican Party. This is that party that fostered the nonsense about Barack Obama’s birth certificate. It is the party that waged a campaign of relentless obstruction to everything Obama proposed as president. Trump shocks Republicans because he is cruder than most but also because he’s revealed their dodge. Republicans have used racial signaling to get those whose jobs are being shipped abroad to embrace the party run by those who are shipping them abroad. It brings together the workers who are being shafted with the billionaires who are getting the gold. Trump has used the same dog whistle racial signaling, but he has also challenged the lousy trade deals and the big money special interest politics. That has made him a hero to many angry blue-collar Republican voters but anathema to the Republican country club set. But the reality is inescapable. Today’s Republican Party is no longer the party of Lincoln. It is the party of Jefferson Davis, the Southern-based, increasingly white party of states’ rights and racial division. Cynthia Gary Commits to Missouri City Council At Large Pos. 2 Race

he way one leads can speak volumes. Family, friends, neighbors, current and former council members all witnessed the leadership style of Cynthia Gary. Watching her they learned to like her leadership style coupled with her life experiences shown in raising her family, building her businesses, school board and city council career. They came to her to ask her to represent them at large on Missouri City’s City Council. She accepted and has officially filed for the May 7, 2016 Missouri City Council race. “EJ and I love Missouri City. We’re proud of what city council has achieved with city economic development and business leaders coming together resulting in more than $500,000,000 in new business growth in the city. As a member of the CPAC, I’m excited city council is revisiting the Master Plan for the Texas Parkway/ Cartwright corridors that was approved by council in 2007.” Gary added, “I’m passionately proud of our city’s acquisition of Quail Valley golf course and the improvements its brought to both the financial bottom line broadening the city tax base and the overall beauty of the city.” She is also proud the overall plans for

the city’s master plan for park trails which occurred while she was on city council Gary is committed to working with the Mayor and council “to ensure continued responsible home and commercial business building throughout the city.” “I’m proud Forbes Magazine boasts of Missouri City as one of America’s safest, most affordable and best quality of life cities to raise a family and business, invest in a home and retire,” added Gary. Rice University also recognized Missouri City as America’s most ethnically balanced city for growing families, small businesses and retirees. It is because of glowing reviews like those from Forbes Magazine and Rice University that Gary is so proud to be a resident of Missouri City for all the good it has to offer. Quality of life, affordability and especially safety are paramount. “As the wife of a retired senior special agent for the U.S. Justice Department and mom of an active HPD officer, I’m proud of our continuing push by Council to improve public safety.” Gary served on Fort Bend ISD School Board and nearly 10 years ago beat an incumbent Missouri City Council Member. BOOK REVIEW

Soul Serenade

inyl is making a comeback. Those are five words that put a smile on a music aficionado’s face. A CD isn’t the same, they say. An MP3 is nowhere near as good. You don’t get the right sound unless you’re spinning a record, so vinyl is coming back – but, for people like Rashod Ollison in “Soul Serenade,” it never really left. There was once a time when “Dusty” Ollison’s parents were happy. He knows it’s true; he has evidence of it, in the form of a picture taken at the beginning of their marriage, which lasted thirteen years. When they split, he was old enough to witness but too young to understand, having become inured to the fights, the cheating, and the drinking at his home near Hot Springs, Arkansas. After Ollison’s father fled his family – leaving Ollison’s mother with a ‘tween and two small children – he rarely returned. But he left a gift behind: stacks of vinyl. Ollison says he remembers poking around music stores with his father, ogling covers, eager for approval of his taste in performers. Chaka Khan, Bobby Womack, Stevie Wonder, Ollison recalls fascination with their record labels spinning on the turntable. Michael Jackson gave him comfort, Aretha was a mood barometer, they all taught him about grown-up love through lyrics. With his mother working two full-time jobs to keep food on the table, Ollison counted on music to anchor him. It was his means of escape as his oldest sister took her rage out on him, as his family moved repeatedly, as he was bullied in school for “actin’ like a woman.” He denied feminine gestures and a tender heart, but by age thirteen, he could no longer ignore that he was gay.

School, by then, had joined music as a thing of refuge; Ollison excelled at his lessons, achieved good grades, made friends, and expanded his playlist. As he grew, he also wondered about his father sometimes but was largely indifferent, even as the man lay Rashad Ollison dying. And then an aunt told Ollison something that made him change his tune. “Soul Serenade” starts where many good memoirs do: with a faded picture of a time that barely seems possible. From there, we’re surprised by a death that promises to taint much of what’s to come, all wrapped in family lore. But don’t get complacent. Author Rashod Ollison doesn’t allow any lingering. Soon enough, his story becomes angry yelling, a smack upside the head, profanity, TV-as-babysitter, fists and sore feet. We’re taken from neighborhood to neighborhood as the lights are shut off, the rent isn’t paid, and he’s taunted with words that his sister has to explain. It’s chaos – but it’s also a darn good tale that it doesn’t dissolve into whining or poor-me-ing, testament to Ollison’s storytelling skills. “Soul Serenade” is one of those books that sticks in your brain – not only for the suggested music, but because the memoir itself leaves its mark. And if that sounds like solid gold to you, then give this book a spin. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

he bond between a mother and a child is powerful. In that bond is an abundance of love and life. The bond between a father and a child is life changing. A father actively involved in a son’s life teaches him the ways of being a man, which sets him up on his destination in life. A father in a daughter’s life teaches her the ways in which a man should treat her. A father lets a daughter know how value and builds her confidence to help her define who she is. A father is a daughter’s first love. Sam Wesley knows the massive task it is to be a father. As the father of two daughters he understands the two most important things he can do is love them and always be available for them. “Fatherhood above all things is sacrificial. That is probably the best word I can give it,” said Wesley as he told me about the time when his oldest daughter was born. Calling her the first person he loved more than himself, “ I would give up anything for her to be ok.” Throughout her life, as well as her sister’s life, both girls have always known that their dad loved them. Wesley admits he has made mistakes in parenting but kids will forgive. “Kids give you passes,” he said. “But if you are there for them, they will forgive the mistakes. Be available and active in their lives and they will love you regardless of what you do.” It is being available that has led Wesley to one of his missions in life. He wanted to take his youngest daughter to a father/daughter dance but thought the idea was a little stale. So the pair went skating instead. Turns out they had so much fun that Wesley thought other dads might be interested in doing the same thing with their daughter(s.) Well, he was right and the Fa-

ther Daughter Skate Date took off. Through some advertising on Facebook and word of mouth Wesley hosted his first Father Daughter Skate Date in 2015. Close to 150 fathers and daughters supported the event. Fathers expressed their gratitude to him for hosting such a meaningful affair to help them take their bond with their daughter(s) to another level. Mothers welcomed the idea as well. Now he is hosting the event again. Just like fathers and daughters have taken their relationships to another level he is doing the same with the event. The anticipated crowd has almost tripled to an expected 600 people. Also growing are the activities. Besides

skating, daughters can get a makeover for their date with dad, do arts and crafts, have fun in the photo booth, eat good food, and play games all with dad at their side. His own daughters think he is pretty awesome for pulling together such an event as this. Especially his youngest, who considers father daughter skate date as their own special thing. Wesley said it is really fun to watch all the fathers and daughters in action. There is a lot of falling, dancing and laughter but more than anything there is bonding that is taking place. And that is what its all about; forming that eternal, everlasting bond and trust. It is all part of Wesley’s personal mission to strengthen the family unit and help men to understand their role as husband and father. He has goals to expand to host events that focus on the family once a quarter. Future events include one for mothers and sons and one just for couples. But for now take advantage of the Father Daughter Skate Date. Fathers you’re your daughter(s) and make it a date. Fathers and daughters of all ages are welcomed. Mothers are invited as well just be sure to accompany a father. The event takes place Friday, March 18th from 7-10pm at Lockwood Skating Palace. Tickets start at $32.64 for a father and daughter and include skates, food, and photo booth pictures and go up to $43.19 if daughter wants to get a princess makeover. Mayor Selects First Woman as Chair of METRO

n another history making decision, Mayor Sylvester Turner today announced his selection of Carrin Patman to be the new chair of the METRO board. Patman, who will be the first woman to chair the board, knows METRO well due to her previous experience as a board member from 2010 to 2014. Pending confirmation by City Council and a vote by the METRO board, she replaces Gilbert Garcia, who has been board chair since 2010. “I want to thank Gilbert for his dedication to expanding light rail and adding more transit options,” said Mayor Turner. “The city has benefitted from his vision and leadership. Now it is time to build on that progress, and Carrin is the person who can take METRO to the next level. She is a visionary leader capable of collaborating with all the different community stakeholders as well as the various governmental entities to advance transportation mobility for the region.” Patman is a trial lawyer at Bracewell LLP, where she has practiced for three decades. She was the first woman elected to Bracewell’s seven-member Management Committee and is the only woman to have been twice

elected to serve on that committee. She is also the first woman to receive the Karen H. Susman Jurisprudence Award, given each year by the Anti-Defamation League Southwest Region to “an outstanding member of the legal community who exhibits a commitment to equality, justice, fairness and community service.” Patman is currently serving as a board member of the University of Texas (UT) Law School Foundation, the UT Health Science Center at Houston Development Board and UT’s Center for Women in Law, which she helped found. She has extensive previous civic involvement that includes serving on the boards of the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and Legacy Community Health Services Endowment and as an executive committee member for Texas Appleseed, Girls Incorporated of Greater Houston and Sheltering Arms Senior Services. She is former vice chair of the Houston Bar Association, former president of the UT Law Alumni Association, an American Leadership Forum Fellow and a 2014 Fellow of the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative. “I’m deeply honored that Mayor Turner has

entrusted me with a mission we both view as critical to the future of the Houston region -Carrin Patman & Mayor Turner building coalitions to provide excellent and accessible transportation for all of our citizens and to prepare for our region’s growth,” said Patman. Patman is a graduate of Duke University and the UT School of Law. Mayor Turner intends to select other City METRO board appointees in the near future. Spring Fashion at Macy’s Takes a Nostalgic Nod to the Groovy Seventies

pring and summer may bring the heat this season but fashion plans to keep us cool. Macy’s fashion experts tell us this spring it is all about being inspired by the cool tranquility of water. According to Macy’s Juliana Echavarria the year’s colors are inspired by the water with rose quarts, serenity soft blues, minty greens, peony pink, limoncello yellow and sweet chartreuse. Anticipate icy blue palettes and classic nautical motifs to make up the foundation of spring’s most refreshing looks with inspirations coming from the open sea. Fashion is being revamped as it takes ideas from the seventies and brings them update-to-date with a modern feel. Trends in Women’s Fashion “This season, nostalgia for midcentury femininity is alive and well,” said Echavarria. “Expect to live the hippie fantasy with an updated return to Woodstock-era wanderlust and gypsy dreams.” Macy’s wants women to step into the good life this spring by relaxing and enjoying the fabrics that move you. Big in the line up are fit and flair silhouettes, cropped tops and little white dresses. Gingham is back to give a country chic look. Floral prints seem to always be part of spring fashion. Flowers bloom outside and on your clothes. Clothes will take on a garden look to bring the outside straight to your wardrobe. Millennial fashion takes an ode to hipster days of Woodstock with lots of fringe. Whimsical patterns with purples, yellows and turquoise put the younger generation in a groovy type of mood. Paisley shirts with flared-leg pants and fringed vests will be huge. Denim is something that will always be in. Macy’s embraces the classic fabric by focusing on denims that are distressed, frayed and have a little patchwork. It again is a hint to the seventies to give that sunflower child vibe. Blues are lighter and more embellished. “From ombré washes to all kinds of embellishment, there’s never been a better time to embrace true blues. Denim is at the top of the list for must-haves looks this season, you will see it everywhere, from dresses, to off-shoulder tops, to bags and shoes,” said Echavarria.

ed Echavarria. Think about Don Johnson in his Miami Vice days. Denim is also a fan fav of guys. Denim is so comfortable and familiar. “ When it comes to denim this spring, it’s all about the cool factor: the color, the wash, and that perfect fit,” said Echavarria. Must Haves One always has to be careful when taking on the new trends of the season. Finding that perfect balance can be tricky. You never want to be so trendy your outfit looks like a mistake instead of right. And you don’t want to not take on trends as you’ll look like you don’t get it. Echavarria notes, “For women, skirts with button-front details, dyed-to-look-denim sweatshirts and delicate sundresses reinvent everything you thought you knew about denim dressing.” Make sure you closet is outfitted with: •The destructed jean - in different shades of blue or in a beautiful crisp white •The mini bag - look for fringed drawstring mini cross body bags in jewel and pastel tones •The bare shoulder top from Sanctuary and Maison Jules – pair it with flared-jeans from some of Macy’s brands such as Levi’s, Hudson, AG, Guess or True Religion •A white flare eyelet dress – pair it with gladiator sandals and a long pendant necklace The men’s look evolves around the weekend and always being ready to go. Echavarria says the perfect look is comprised of a pair of destructed jeans from Levi’s paired with a linen shirt with roll-tab sleeves from Perry Ellis and white sneakers from Nautica.

Make sure your closet is outfitted with: •The striped dress shirt – Macy’s Trends in Men’s Fashion has beautiful dress shirts from Men’s fashion follows that of Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, women’s fashion with light colors to and Polo keep one cool and easy flowing fabrics. •The new blue suit - a monochroThe idea is be relaxed and carefree. matic look of head-to-toe deep Clothes should not be complicated at all. “For men, imagine soft, sunset-inspired hues, blue suit separates from Bar III, Tommy Hilfiger, easy silhouettes and carefree fabrics,” comment- Michael Kors and Lauren Ralph Lauren 8

Don’t forget to make sure your outfit pops with the right accessories. It is all about the wrist and putting the head turning watch or bracelet on it. Watches with white straps and bracelets that are in tones of rose gold are inline with the season. Put a little sparkle and bling to your look with pendants and rings. Men can rock a watch too but it is really about your shoe game. White sneakers are a must. Messenger bags and backpacks are starting to become more popular for men as well this season. Look to Macy’s to always be in step with fashion and on trend every season of the year. Visit www. macys.com for a preview to spring. Be sure to use your saving pass found in this issue.

NCAA Final Four Local Organizing Committee Aims to Leave Lasting Legacy On Houston Community

Volunteer

N

early 140 volunteers, including military veterans, college students and Boy Scouts, joined the 2016 NCAA Men’s Final Four Local Organizing Committee for a special Day of Service in the Third Ward are to rebuild Houston and Blodgett urban gardens. Designed to create a lasting legacy that extends well beyond the championship weekend (April 1 – 4, 2016), teams of volunteers took on projects in two locations. A team of 75 volunteers

10

joined Rebuilding Together Houston to assist three homeowners, living on the same street in the Sunnyside area. The Final Four volunteers included military veterans from the Lone Star Veterans Association, who made repairs, repaint exteriors and revitalize the landscape in the yards of these deserving individuals. One of the homes scheduled for repair suffered significant damage when a neighbor’s house caught fire. The home is owned by a military veteran,

March 10 - March 16, 2016

who is currently enrolled in school and lacks the funds to make repairs. Another home is owned by an 87-year-old widow, who has lived in the home since 1954. A native Houstonian, she raised six children in the home and wants to continue the tradition of hosting her 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren for holiday gatherings. The repainting of the home and installation of new landscaping will allow her to continue that tradition with her family. An 89-year-old widow, who recently lost her World War II veteran husband, is the third recipient of the volunteers’ services. She has lived in the home for more than 60 years and during that time served as a teaching assistant in nearly every school in the neighborhood. She feels very blessed to receive the help from the Final Four volunteers and will enjoy the home even more with her seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Final Four volunteers, along with members of Wheeler Avenue Boy Scout Troop 242, representatives from Coca-Cola, Texas Southern University (TSU) students, and the city of Houston Solid Waste Management Dept., joined Keep Houston Beautiful at the second

location in cleaning, organizing and beautifying a popular running trail at Texas Southern University and revitalizing a portion of Blodgett Urban Gardens (BUG). More than 60 volunteers planted 25 trees and revitalized the path along the popular trail that winds through the campus. The volunteers also refurbished a vegetable patch at the BUG, with 400 vegetable plants, fresh soil, mulch and new spring greens. The garden plays a vital role in teaching local residents about various gardening techniques, including composting, growing herbs, and building greenhouses with recycled household materials. Produce grown in the garden is distributed to the Shape Community Center, Wesley Foundation, Pilgrim Community Center, and TSU student organizations. is known by so many names - H-Town, Bayou City, Clutch City, and Space City – the GHCVB has trademarked many of the names. Due to this, they are not too happy with the use of the name of the Space City Comic Con and they want them to change it according to newsfixhouston.com. If the GHCVB wins the verdict, the comic convention will have to change their name. What’s peculiar though is the GHCVB has a 50% stake in the rival comic convention which makes this a conflict of interest. For more information, visit www. newsfixhouston.com.

Australian Lamb Show Cased in Five Courses By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer

L

iberty Kitchen and Oyster Bar hosted a lamb and wine dinner fit for a Royal Court while Master Butcher Doug Piper displayed his knife skills and educated a room full of media foodies on the art of butchery. The custom menu for the dinner was created by Liberty Kitchen’s Chef Travis Lenig. The Guests of Honor from “Down Under” held this private event as a part of the “Raise the Steaks” campaign to promote and encourage consumers in the U.S. to consider adding more lamb to the family dinners. The evening began with sparkling cava paired with lamb tartare topped with a quail egg. The bubbly libation had a crisp finish with a hint of citrus, which was refreshing after having the rather raw appetizer. The first course consisted of a lamb dumpling with consomme’ which was served with Mulderbosch Vineyard Chenin Blanc. The flavor of the warm broth was almost like having won ton soup with lamb but much tastier. The white wine was light, dry, but did not over power the dumpling. Shortly after this course finished we were treated to the “Braised Lamb Empanada with a Red Wine Au Jus.” This was a wonderful surprise. The crust of this dish was light and flaky, the meat was seasoned well, and the sauce had a little kick to it and needless to say my portion disappeared quickly. This dish was delivered with Tilia Wines Merlot, this pairing worked well together. The third course was “Goat Cheese Crusted Lamb Loin, Arugula and Artichoke Vinaigrette”, the lamb was served medium rare; it was tender very lean, and the cheese gave it a unique flavor that matched the Charles Smith “MCK.” The wine in this course was absolutely delicious; it was bold, fruity, and smooth; this was my favorite drink of the evening. Finishing up the “meat feast” was the braised lamb shanks, couscous, with a caramelized tomato jam. When our servers brought out this large portion of meat, I was too ready to wrap mine up in a “to go” container; however, the lamb was so lean; the grain of the shank was soft and packed with flavor. The tomato jam had a rich texture and taste that seemed to give the meat a slight tart flavor. This was paired with a Cabernet Sauvignon, but I opted for the Charles Smith with this dish. Lastly, we rounded up the evening with dessert: Goat Cheese and Apple Crepe, Cajeta Sauce and Cinnamon Ice Cream with “Dolci Colline” Proseco. This is where I quit, but not before tasting the crepe and the ice cream, which was rather light; the sweet and savory flavors were well –balanced. Obamas to Visit Texas for SXSW Festival

CNN/Stylemagazine.com Newswire

March 18 | 8 p.m. GuGu Drum Group from Shanghai PRESENTED BY CENTERPOINT ENERGY

Barack and Michelle Obama

T

he Obamas are heading to Austin, Texas, to headline separate events at the annual South by Southwest festival according to event’s organizers. President Barack Obama will keynote a session on technology on March 11, while the first lady will promote her girls’ education initiative at the music portion of the event the following week. It’s both Obamas’ first times attending the annual event, which takes place in March every year. Known as SXSW, the gathering is a joint technology, film and music festival that brings together leaders in those sectors. “I can’t imagine a better way to celebrate our event’s 30th year than to welcome both the President and first lady to SXSW,” said SXSW co-founder Roland Swenson. “As each new generation comes up at SXSW they look for ways they can be of service, and it’s important to reflect and support that message. President and Mrs. Obama’s visit here will inspire attendees to that purpose.” Obama has been working to improve the federal government’s use of technology and with American firms to better harness their products to improve the political process and promote civic engagement. He’s also pressured technology firms to take a harder stance against terrorists using their platforms. The federal government has convened a project with technologists, as well as advertising and entertainment executives, to better combat extremist messages from groups like ISIS. Leaders from Silicon Valley attended a brainstorming session at the Department of Justice last week. While in Texas, Obama will discuss “civic engagement in the 21st Century before an audience of creators, early adopters and entrepreneurs who are defining the future of our connected lives,” the festival said. He’s also expected to raise campaign money for Democrats while in the Lone Star State. For more information, visit www.cnn.com.

HEALTH

HHD to Start Zika Virus Testing for Houston, 17 Surrounding Counties

W

ith the sixth case of the Zika virus being confirmed in Houston it is welcomed news to learn that the Houston Health Department (HHD) is now able to test for the Zika virus in people living in Houston and 17 surrounding counties. In a press release issued this week the HHD revealed that their laboratory could perform the Zika tests in one day, speeding up turn-around time since the department previously needed to ship testing samples to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for confirmation. HHD testing, based on technology provided by the CDC, can distinguish Zika from the related dengue and Chikungunya viruses, which can cause similar symptoms and is carried by the same mosquitoes in the same geographic regions. It uses polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, to simultaneously detect any of the three viruses. “This is the test of choice to detect the Zika virus in blood within the first seven days after symptoms appear,” said Dr. Larry Seigler, chief of HHD’s Bureau of Laboratories. Capacity for local testing begins ahead of the

area’s mosquito season, spanning from May through October. HHD can perform Zika tests on lab specimens submitted by Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Hardin, Harris, Jefferson, Liberty, Matagorda, Montgomery, Orange, San Jacinto, Walker, Waller and Wharton counties. Physicians, however, must contact their local health department or the Texas Department of State Health Services’ Region 6/5S Zoonology Division to secure Zika testing approval. HHD’s laboratory serves as the CDC’s Laboratory Response Network facility for the surrounding

counties. The network is a group of domestic and international laboratories that can respond to public health emergencies. The Zika virus is spread to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week after being bitten by an infected mosquito. People usually don’t get sick enough to go to the hospital and rarely die of Zika. Zika virus can spread from a pregnant woman to her baby during pregnancy. It has been linked to microcephaly, a serious birth defect of the brain in babies of mothers who had the virus while pregnant. There is no vaccine to prevent or medicine available to treat Zika virus. The best way to avoid Zika virus infection is to prevent mosquito bites. For more information, visit www. houstonhealth.org.

Trump’s Modeling Agency Broke Immigration Laws, Attorneys Say

D

o n a l d Tr u m p ’s modeling agency has profited from the very same visa program that the presidential candidate himself has slammed -- and appears to have violated Alexia Palmer & Donald Trump f e d e r a l l a w i n t h e process, a CNNMoney investigation has found. Trump’s own modeling agency has used the program for years, federal data shows. That’s because federal law surprisingly lumps in fashion models with these other specialized workers -- though it’s the only job that doesn’t require higher education. The agency is currently battling a proposed class action lawsuit filed by Jamaican model Alexia Palmer, who was brought to the country with an H-1B visa. The suit alleges that the agency recruits foreign models with promises of wages that never materialize and defrauds the U.S. government on visa applications. Palmer is currently the only plaintiff and the suit has not yet been approved as a class-action. For more information, visit www.cnn.com.
