Gov. Northam Would BeWise to Step Down

irginia Gov. Ralph Northam has admitted that he blackened his face as part of a Michael Jackson costume for a dance party. He also initially admitted that he was one of the participants in a racist photo -- of one person dressed in full Klan regalia and another in blackface --that appeared on his 1984 yearbook page.

the murder of Heather Heyer. Trump infamously embraced the proto-Nazi protesters, arguing that there were “good people on both sides.” Northam has advocated taking down the Confederate statutes in Virginia.

The next day, however, he reversed himself, saying it could not have been him, bizarrely arguing that given how difficult it was to get shoe polish off his face after the dance contest, he surely would not have done it again.

The governor apologized, noting: “In the place and time where I grew up, many actions we rightfully recognize as abhorrent today were commonplace.”

Yes, 1984 was a long time ago, but it was two decades after the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights laws, and three decades after Brown v. Board of Education declared segregation unconstitutional.

In 1984, I made my first run for the presidency. In 1985, Douglas Wilder became the first African-American elected statewide as lieutenant governor in Virginia, on his way to being elected governor four years later. Northam’s actions were offensive and wrong even at the time he committed them.

blackface -- was designed to burlesque black people, to portray them as dumb, grotesque and lascivious and was not incidentally part of propaganda for slavery.

The governor said that his actions then do not reflect his attitude, his views or his policies now or at any time throughout his military, medical and public career. All of us are sinners. Grace and redemption must be accorded to all who atone. I believe deeply that a person can be redeemed from a hideous past.

Northam’s record has been positive.

on Tuesday night in her response to the President’s State of the Union address.

Abrams blamed the President for the recent partial government shutdown, which became the longest in US history, calling it

Trump and McConnell remain in power, yet the right-wing talking heads who celebrate Trump and McConnell are condemning Northam, demonstrating not their virtue but their rapacious partisanship.

Trump and McConnell have plenty of company on their side of the aisle.

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions contended the Voting Rights Act was “intrusive” on states’ rights.

Then there’s Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi. She was elected in November despite saying she’d happily sit in the front row of a “public hanging” if invited by a supporter. She didn’t say it 35 years ago. She said it a few months ago.

And before narrowly defeating African-American gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, Brian Kemp was the Georgia secretary of state and purged hundreds of thousands of Georgians from the voting rolls, most of them African-Americans.

As a practical matter, it will be impossible for Northam to lead the state of Virginia after this revelation. His press conference in which he denied what he had admitted the day before did not help his cause.

Our leaders must represent the values that we espouse and honor the diversity of the coalition that we seek to build.

Virtually the entire leadership of the Democratic Party in the state has called on the governor to resign. He would be wise to accept their advice.

emocratic Party rising star Stacey D Abrams sharply criticized the Trump administration and Republican leadership

In stark contrast to Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, portrayed in an infamous picture celebrating the Confederate flag, Northam has pushed to advance voting rights in Virginia. McConnell recently scorned legislation to expand and defend voting rights as a “power grab,” while defending Republican efforts to suppress the vote across the country.

The recently elected Republican governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, also played the race card with little to no blowback from his party. He warned the voters of his state not to “monkey this up” by electing his African-American opponent, Andrew Gillum.

“a stunt engineered by the President,” and argued that the aspirations of American families “are being crushed by Republican leadership that ignores real life or just doesn’t understand it.”

The 45-year-old narrowly lost a gubernatorial bid in the reliably red state of Georgia last fall, but rose to national prominence

in the process. She made history as the first black woman to give the Democratic response to the State of the Union.

Abrams, who has made voting rights a signature issue, warned during her speech that voter suppression is “real” and described protecting the right to vote as “the next battle for our democracy.” After outlining a host of Democratic priorities, she said, “None of these ambitions are possible without the bedrock guarantee of our right to vote,” adding, “Let’s be clear: voter suppression is real.”

Abrams continued, “We cannot accept efforts to undermine our right to vote,” and said, “This is the next battle for our democracy, one where all eligible citizens can have their say about the vision we want for our country. We must reject the cynicism that says allowing every eligible vote to be cast and counted is a power grab.”

“The foundation of our moral leadership around the globe is free and fair elections where voters pick their leaders, not where politicians pick their voters,” she said.

Abrams ticked through a litany of other issues, ranging from gun control to immigration reform to action on climate change, criticizing the current administration and contrasting the President’s agenda with those of the Democratic Party.

“We know bipartisanship could craft a 21st century immigration plan, but this administration chooses to cage children and tear families apart,” Abrams said in one of her most searing criticisms.

She added, “Compassionate treatment at the border is not the same as open borders” and said that “Democrats stand ready to effectively secure our ports and borders.”

But in a pointed message to the President, Abrams said, “America is made stronger by the presence of immigrants, not walls.”

On the subject of gun violence, Abrams said, “This White House responds timidly while first graders practice active shooter drills,” adding, “from now on, our leaders must be willing to tackle gun safety measures.”

The speech gave Abrams a high-profile platform to counter the President’s own message to Congress and the nation and comes amid speculation that she may run for a Senate seat in 2020.

She talked about her own experience working with volunteers to give out meals to federal workers placed on furlough during the shutdown, saying, “Making livelihoods of our federal workers a pawn for political games is a disgrace.”

Abrams said that the shutdown “defied every tenet of fairness and abandoned not just our people -- but our values.”

She spoke about the country’s fight against racism, saying, “We continue to confront racism from our past and our present, which is why we must hold everyone from the highest offices to our own families accountable for racist words and deeds and call racism what it is -- wrong.”

But now, administrators at the Texas Education Agency are examining what was behind that surprise motion and split vote.

In particular, they are trying to determine if some Houston school board members violated the Texas Open Meetings Act and if there are any other governance issues.

Joe Larsen, a Houston attorney who serves on the board of directors for the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, said Texas has an open meetings law to protect against corruption and require transparency.

At least 298 clergy members across the state have faced “credible abuse” allegations going back to the 1940s, the lists compiled by the 15 Texas dioceses show. The dioceses publicly identified the clergy members on Thursday. Texas leaders and the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter agreed to identify those accused in October as part of an effort “to promote healing and a restoration of trust in the Catholic Church.”

The lists, published on each diocese’s website, include the names of the clergy members, details about when and where they were ordained and which parishes they were assigned to. Each diocese compiled its own list and the details about those accused and the allegations vary.

A few months after the city hired his friend Nathaniel Kindred, one the first three African American firefighters in the state, Douglas said Kindred approached him. He passed the exam and joined the first three at Station 5 in East Austin in 1953. But as you can imagine, as trailblazers in the 50s, their journey wasn’t easy. Slowly but surely things did begin to change. Mr. Douglas continued to break down barriers in the late 1960s, when he shifted from fighting fires to preventing them. He became the first black fire inspector in the state of Texas, but with that success came a few obstacles too. Now years after his retirement, the department has come a long way. In December of 2018, he had the chance to pin the badge on the Austin’s first black fire chief, Joel Baker.

Under Fire: New Alabama Buc-ee’s Sued for Low Gas Prices

Click2Houston.com beloved Texas business is causing controversy in Alabama. Buc-ee’s opened its first location outside Texas in Baldwin County in January, and already competitors are not happy with the Lone Star staple. A lawsuit filed by the Oasis Travel Center Friday claims Buc-ee’s has been selling gas too cheaply.

While buyers may appreciate the low gas prices, the company claims Buc-ee’s is illegally pricing its gas and it has “already damaged the (competitor’s) business and caused irreparable harm,” according to the lawsuit. The new location opened weeks ago just four miles from Oasis, and - with gas prices at $1.89 - has been packed since. The state average for gas is $1.81, and Oasis’ gas is priced at $2.12, according to Gas Buddy. Oasis is not happy with the new gas station saying, “(Buc-ee’s) illegal practices have cost it sales and gross gasoline margin and threatens to continue to do so if not stopped.”

Employees Take Lead On Target’s Expanded Black History Month Collection

They got an earful. Shoppers wanted more items from black-owned businesses.

They wanted more variety. They wanted more prominent displays. This year, the Minneapolis-based retailer is making a big bet on that idea. Target tripled the number of stores carrying its Black History Month collection compared with last year and broadened the number of items, all of which are curated or designed by employees. Nationwide, 700 of its 1,850 stores will carry the items through the end of February. It also created a dedicated space on its website at target.com/celebrateblackhistory. Target has had a public campaign tied to Black History Month since 2006. Past efforts have included supporting the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History.

NHL to Celebrate Black History Month for 1st time

MySanAntonio.com he NHL will celebrate Black History Month for the first time, shifting its focus in February from its wide-ranging “Hockey Is For Everyone” campaign to emphasize racial diversity in the sport. The league and NHL Players’ Association will announce the joint initiative Friday morning. It includes a traveling mobile museum devoted to the history of minorities in hockey predating Willie O’Ree breaking the color barrier in 1958 and going up to the present day.

The museum will debut outside Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday.

As part of this, “Hockey Is For Everyone” is expanding to year-round. March will be gender-equality month, and the plan is to add acknowledgement of Hispanic heritage and “First Nations” next season.

There are roughly 20 black players currently on NHL rosters, though executive vice president of social impact, growth initiatives and legislative affairs Kim Davis said there is strong minority representation at youth levels.

The level for Black Americans was 6.8%, which is about what the number has been across the nation during some modest recessions. The comparison is even worse when put side by side with certain other groups. The level for Whites in January was 3.5%.

The level for Blacks was 94% higher than that. The level for Asians was 3.1%.

The rate for Blacks was 120% higher than that figure. The BLS summarized the national numbers, “Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rate for Hispanics increased to 4.9 percent in January. The level of Black unemployment has actually gotten worse over the last several months. It was 6.6% in December, and 6% in September. That means in five months, the figure has risen 12%.

Kristoff St. John, Star of ‘Young & the Restless,’ Dead at 52

ctor Kristoff St. John, who played Neil Winters on the CBS daytime soap opera “The Young & the Restless,” has died, according to his attorney Mark Geragos. He was 52. A cause of death has not been released. Sarah Ardalani, a public information officer with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner, told CNN that St. John was found dead at a home in the Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. St. John joined the cast of “The Young & the Restless” in 1991. In real life, St. John dealt with drama that could have rivaled a soap opera. St. John’s last activity on Twitter was January 21 when he retweeted a post, which read, “Grieving the loss of a child is a process.

It begins on the day your child passes, and ends the day the parent joins them.”

He was set to marry his model girlfriend, Kseniya Mikhaleva.

The rapper has announced his “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot” 20th Anniversary tour will kick off March 8 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in celebration of the 1998 album. DMX was in prison on May 12 of last year, the actual anniversary of the album’s release. He was released from Gilmer Federal Correctional Institution in Glenville, West Virginia, last month. The 31-city tour dates were posted on his official Instagram account, which also documented DMX shooting pool after his release from prison. In announcing the tour dates, the rapper had a message for his fans. “Talk is cheap, Mothafu**a!” the caption on a photo of the tour dates said. “Tickets On Sale Friday, February 8 @ 10:00am EST #dmx20yeartour.”

Jussie Smollett Wants to Clarify a Few Things

ctor and Musician Jussie Smollett performed at his first show since his reported attack, tearfully telling fans at the event in Southern California that he is not fully healed but he is doing OK. The “Empire” actor said that he was attacked by two men who were “yelling out racial and homophobic slurs” in what Chicago police are investigating as a possible hate crime. Smollett said one of his attackers put a rope around his neck and poured an unknown chemical substance on him. During his concert Saturday night at West Hollywood’s Troubadour club, Smollett told fans that he wanted to clarify that following the attack, he was bruised but his ribs were neither cracked nor broken. He also said that he went to the doctor immediately, but he wasn’t hospitalized, and physicians in both Chicago and Los Angeles cleared him to perform at the concert.

Camila Cabello will be making her Grammy performance debut. She’s also nominated for two awards, best pop solo performance and best pop vocal album.

Cardi B will also perform. The rapper is nominated in five categories, including record of the year and best rap album.

Janelle Monáe, Post Malone, Dan + Shay, Kacey Musgraves and Shawn Mendes round out the other announced performers. Alicia Keys will host the show. The 15-time Grammy shared her joy about the gig in a video this week.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH How Jackie Robinson’s Wife, Rachel, Helped Him Break Baseball’s Color Line

ackie Robinson, who would have turned 100 on Jan. 31, is often remembered for his courage, athleticism, tenacity and sacrifice. By confronting Jim Crow – both as a baseball player and as a civil rights activist – he changed America.

he was a senior. Jackie was a four-letter athlete and “a big man on campus,” as she described him.

“Back in the days when integration wasn’t fashionable,” Martin Luther King Jr. said of Robinson, “he underwent … the loneliness which comes with being a pilgrim walking through the lonesome byways toward the high road of freedom. He was a sit-inner before sit-ins, a freedom rider before freedom rides.”

I’ve written three books about Robinson, in addition to dozens of columns and articles. I used to wonder how Robinson persevered in the face of so much hate and ugliness. He was certainly as tough a competitor as any athlete who ever lived, and he had an unwavering religious faith.

But I eventually realized that he couldn’t have achieved what he did without his wife, Rachel, whose spirit was as formidable as his own.

Sure, he had his mother, Mallie; his minister, Karl Downs; Brooklyn Dodgers’ president, Branch Rickey, who signed him; and sportswriter Wendell Smith, who served as his ghostwriter and confidante.

Rachel, however, was the only constant.

“She was not simply the dutiful wife,” Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Roger Wilkins said about Rachel. “She had to live through the death threats, endure the vile screams of the fans and watch her husband get knocked down by pitch after pitch. … She was beautiful and wise and replenished his strength and courage.”

They married five years later on Feb. 10, 1946, a few months after Brooklyn Dodgers President Branch Rickey signed Jackie to play for the organization’s top minor league team, the Montreal Royals.

Two-and-a-half weeks after the wedding, the Robinsons left the relative comfort of Los Angeles to go to spring training in Florida. Robinson would have to confront both baseball’s color line and the Jim Crow laws of the South, where blacks who challenged segregation risked jail, injury or death.

“There was such an incredible amount of pressure, it might have driven two people apart,” she told Sports Illustrated in 2013. “But it had the opposite effect on us, it pushed us together.”

“We had a pledge to each other that we were going to try to keep the house a haven,” she said. “Someplace safe.

Someplace we didn’t have to replay the mess outside.”

At some point, as Rachel later told Robinson biographer Arnold Rampersad, Jackie began to refer to himself not as “I” but as “we.” Jackie and Rachel were united as civil rights activists; they knew, as Rachel put it, “that the issue wasn’t simply baseball but life and death, freedom and bondage, for a lot of people.”

He established himself as one of the best players in the National League. But the racist epithets continued to rain down on him from the stands and the dugouts of opposing teams.

Rachel was determined to make their home a refuge from that malevolence, whether the Robinsons were living in Montreal, New York City, or later, in Stamford, Connecticut.

After earning her master’s degree, she worked as a nurse-therapist and researcher at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. She then taught nursing at Yale University while she served as director of the Connecticut mental health center.

After Jackie died, Rachel created the Jackie Robinson Foundation, which has provided scholarships for 1,400 college students.

Rachel knew she and Jackie could not react to every racial epithet hurled their way. But she wasn’t averse to quiet forms of resistance. When their plane stopped in New Orleans on their flight to Florida, Rachel saw something she had never seen before: separate restrooms for “white women” and “colored women.” She defiantly walked into restroom marked “white women.”

During that first spring training, segregation laws prohibited the Robinsons from staying in the same oceanfront hotel in Daytona Beach with his white teammates. Nor could they eat in white restaurants. They stayed with a black family and ate their meals in a black restaurant.

Robinson, feeling the weight of representing millions of black Americans, struggled during the beginning of spring training. He had trouble hitting, and he hurt his throwing arm so badly that he could barely lift it.

Rachel calmed Jackie every night in their small room, massaging his sore arm as he raged against the indignities he faced on and off the field. She also learned she was pregnant while they were in Daytona Beach, but decided not to tell him.

Black Owned Businesses Continue to Bring Dignity to Death

here is one thing all people have in common. We all will be born and we will die. Death is such a delicate subject that families need someone to help them ease through the process of all the decision making that has to be done to plan out a proper burial. For many families in the Houston area, the ones that they often turn to are the folks at McCoy & Harrison Funeral Home and O.W. Wiley Mortuary.

Image a close family member has died and the only thing your family is interested in is putting them away nicely. Your emotions are all over the place.

You reach out to the funeral director for some sympathy and start the process of burying your family member only to be turned away by the proprietor. Although death is universal, burying your loved one was not at funeral homes during the days of segregation due to the color of your skin. It is for reasons like that in how families were mistreated that Homer E. McCoy saw this need to establish the McCoy & Harrison Funeral Home to bring dignity to death for African Americans.

A business that certainly needs a loving touch and a tender hand is the funeral industry. McCoy brought compassion and care to the profession to ensure that families knew that they were more than the color of their skin and their loved one’s life meant something. Always rendering care to the people, he became known as the People’s Pharmacy. From the senior McCoy to his son to the current generation, the family-owned business is the longest tenured family

owned and operated black funeral home in Houston and the State of Texas. Over the ninety plus years, the person in the family who manages the business has changed but not much else. Today sisters Helen McCoy Abernathy and Brenda McCoy Lee are at the helm.

“We are certainly grateful to be around as long as we have; our family has been a staple in our community for a very long time,” said Helen McCoy Abernathy, Funeral Director and President for the funeral home. “We believe we have a responsibility to our community to continue providing our services that they have been accustomed to over the past years.”

Workers give a hands-on approach, always remembering years ago when so many families were given less than and treated in such foul ways. They try hard not to get caught up in the big business mind thinking where money is more valued than people. “It is easy to remain complacent with status quo of mom and pop, but stepping out of your comfort zone and attempting to have that Fortune 500 company mentality is daunting and challenging. However, we believe in merging the two. That formula has proved to be a great success as we continue to grow as a company, but also remain a pulse to the community,” said Abernathy.

Competition and technology have tested both companies over the years.

Advancements have definitely helped and not hindered. Abernathy believes technology most definitely assists in making the business’s day-to-day operations easier but it has also challenged them in keeping that family touch as families tend to want to do a lot more things digitally instead of in person. In the past, families would come to the facility to make arrangements. Whereas now families want to handle business mainly via email and look on the website to comparison shop. “The key is to incorporate advancing technology into our traditional principles,” said Abernathy. “We always make sure we speak and meet with them personally.

Wiley Mortuary is a first generation operation that is run by husband and wife team, Otis W. Wiley, Sr. and Jacqueline Jones-Wiley. The pair has really had a lot of positive experiences with technology and has embraced it to expand their care for families beyond the burial with their aftercare resources online through their website. Funerals are big business so any way to stand out amongst the competition is crucial.

Another barrier for funeral homes to stay in business is the rise in price inflation. Just to dig a hole in the ground for a loved one’s final resting place has

gone from a mere $90 in the early 1900s to over $1,500 by today’s standards.

Abernathy says those rising costs have caused her to an increase in the number of cremations that they do since it by far a more reasonable price option for families. Also, tailored packages of varying prices and services have been created as a way to help families lower the cost of funerals for grieving families at McCoy & Harrison. However, Wiley said that she has found families that come to them still favor more traditional burials versus cremations.

There are so many similar operations out there in the funeral home business but those who don’t know how to work the formula compassion for families and operating in the black have seen their business bought out by bigger corporations. A past Ebony magazine article reported that there were 3,000 black-owned funeral homes in the U.S. Today, there are estimated to be only

1,200. Businesses are being bought out by companies like Service Corporation International, based in Houston, who estimates that they have purchased 50 known funeral homes in the last 20 years. Funeral homes are having to find ways to keep doing what help them start their businesses but also keep ahead of the changing times by expanding their brand and services to meet demand while still giving the personal touch.

“Change is inevitable, progress is not. Therefore, as a funeral director, it’s important to understand how to embrace change, while still maintaining important traditions,” said Wiley.

Abernathy points out that diversity is good for the growth of a city but the problem that she has noticed is how diversity has changed the makeup of neighborhoods. “Houston is becoming a more diverse city by the day; as a result what was once a predominantly African-American community has shifted more towards a multicultural community. It is our duty to remain active in our community as well as remain active through technology to let our families know we are not going anywhere and

Falling close second or in a tie is their level of customer service. Growing in that same light are the Wileys who know referrals are king in this business.

In yesterday, the business was more than just burying your dead but for events. Since black literally had no place to hold their weddings and other festive occasions they turned to funeral homes.

Today, that is not so much the case with the passing of time. However that bond and connection to the community as a

resource beyond death still exist. “Serving the community that my husband and I grew up in and giving back through scholarships, sponsorships, mentoring and providing employment in the greater Houston area has truly bought joy to us and our firm,” said Wiley.

A lot of have changes have occurred in the funeral industry from the expansion of services, embracing new technologies, and other facets however one of the biggest changes has been the inclusion of women. It is easy to see how this could be a male-dominated industry.

When Homer McCoy started his company in 1926 he was the main employee doing a lot of the heavy lifting. He was the one answering the call to handle bodies and not sound insensitive or be cruel people are far heavier when dead. Hence, the term dead weight. And when chemicals are added in the embalming process to preserve bodies they become even heavier.

In general women usually, don’t have the strength to be able to handle that kind of load. Plus the closed-mindedness of some men just blocked women trying to enter the industry.

Abernathy, Lee, and Wiley are some women who have broken that ceiling.

Abernathy and Lee were in a way birthed into the business whereas her husband introduced Wiley to it. Following in the steps of his dream, Wiley said she took on his vision as her own. “ I decided to go to the Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service to become a Licensed Funeral Director after my children graduated from high school.”

Wiley continued, “Ironically the majority of my classmates were women.

Our professor told us that more families preferred a female Funeral Director because we were more nurturing than our male colleagues.” Now she considers being in the industry her true calling.

Harris County Public Health (HCPH) Confirms Three Measles Cases in Harris County

arris County Public Health (HCPH) confirms three measles cases in Harris\County. The patients, whose identities will remain confidential, are two boys (under the age of 2) and a 25 – 35 year-old woman. All three patients reside in northwest Harris County.

“Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus, which spreads to others through coughing and sneezing,” said Umair A. Shah, MD, MPH, Executive Director for HCPH. “However, it is easily preventable.

Parents and caregivers have the power to protect their children and themselves from this disease by getting vaccinated.”

The last confirmed report of a measles case in Harris County was by the City of Houston in 2018. This year, there are currently six confirmed reports of

Measles can be dangerous, especially for babies and young children. Measles is an airborne virus that lives in the nose and throat mucus of an infected person. It can spread to others through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms of measles are a high fever, runny nose, cough, red-watery eyes, and sore throat that is followed by a rash breakout 3-5 days after symptoms begin. Measles is highly contagious, and if one person has it, 9 out of 10 people around that person will also become infected if they’re not yet vaccinated. About 1 out of 4 people who get measles will be hospitalized.

Measles is prevented through the combination MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. Baking Cocoa 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 large egg 1 cup reduced-fat buttermilk or

low-fat milk 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon red food coloring

H

alloween came earlier for the students at the Imani School as their dads dressed up as some of their favorite heroes to encourage a love for reading in the students. More than 20 dads dressed in tights, capes, and masks as everyone from Batman to Black Panther to surprise their little ones by reading treasured stories to their classes. The kids were more than delighted and a lot of reading took place.

ouston Community College has a legacy of bringing the community together for this type of poignant conversations to address the issues concerning citizens. Residents were given the opportunity to have an open dialogue about issues and see how HCC would get involved in addressing them at the 2019 Community Conversation event. Topics discussed included Embracing Houston’s Future with HCC’s Chancellor Dr. Cesar Maldonado and HCC’s Strategic Planning Process: What We’ve Learned with HCC’s Vice Chancellor, Planning & Institutional Effectiveness. Dr. Kurt Ewen. Others in attendance were HCC Trustee Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, Susan Hines, Colleen Reilly, Michael Edwards, and Bridget Joe.

nsuring that teens are nurtured into productive adults takes them being involved in organizations like the Top Teens of America, Incorporated. The Missouri City Space City Houston Chapter of the Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., celebrated their graduating seniors at the annual Blue & Silver Ball. The affair is their biggest and most anticipated event of the year as teens’ talents and achievements are spotlighted throughout the night. The highlight was the crowning of Mr. Top Teen Amari Venzor, Miss Top Teen T’eRicka Davenport, and Princess Bethany Perry.

Funds raised from the ball go directly back to teens for scholarships and programs to enhance their education. Some in attendance were TLOD Chapter President Shanda Provost, TTA Chapter President April Smith, TTA Advisor Veronica Carroll, Catherine Wooton, Verlonda Proctor, Akwanza Watson, Deon Bracey, Krystle Simpson-Hamlet, Claudia Blair Scott, and Shelly Pryor.
