POLITICAL The White House Is Bracing for 2018 Challenges

resh off a successful push on tax reform, Republicans and the White House are beginning to brace for a challenging midterm election cycle next year — with some White House allies concerned the President and the party aren’t ready for the political trials ahead.

The internal tensions boiled over during a December 20 meeting in the Oval Office, where President Donald Trump and senior aides discussed political strategy for the coming year. Earlier in the day, Republican lawmakers had swarmed the South Lawn of the White House for an event celebrating their tax reform coup. But the President’s team was not basking in that afterglow.

Corey Lewandowski, a former campaign manager for Trump, vented broadly about how the administration is operating — but focused his frustrations on Bill Stepien, the White House political director.

Lewandowski “wanted to stress upon the President that there’s real concern that the White House and the RNC are not doing enough to prepare for the midterm election,” said one former Trump campaign operative who was later informed of the meeting by

a participant. “And if they’re not preparing for midterm election, they’re not preparing for the re-election.”

The President listened and absorbed, letting the two men battle it out, according to the campaign operative. The loud disagreement spilled out after the meeting into the outer Oval, before Stepien and Lewandowski eventually stepped outside. Stepien declined to comment and Lewandowski didn’t return a call seeking comment. The New York Times first reported the disagreement following the December 20 meeting.

Growing stress

The episode reflects growing stress at the White House and among Republicans regarding the party’s standing ahead of the midterms and its preparations for the likely punishing election cycle. It also raises questions over the status of the relationship between the White House and its allies at the Republican National Committee and on Capitol Hill. When RNC officials met during the first week of November to plan for the midterm elections, “One of the biggest things that came out of that meeting was, the role of the RNC is to support the

Donald Trump president,” said one person familiar with the meeting. “That’s numero uno.” If committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has remained committed to the President, however, party insiders believe the RNC’s strategy has not always aligned with that of the White House.

“Are they all on the same page? I think from the beginning, it could have been much better,” said a former committee official.

A current RNC official said that Lewandowski, in his remarks to Trump, was “looking for a wedge to drive between the White House and the RNC, but there isn’t one.

And the political operation and fund-raising from Chairwoman McDaniel should tell the President how successful we’ve been over the past year.” The RNC currently enjoys a sizable cash advantage to its Democratic counterpart, with nearly $40 million on hand.When Trump met with McDaniel earlier this month to discuss the outcome of the Alabama US Senate race and the push for tax cuts on Capitol Hill, he did not express misgivings about the RNC’s strategy.

First Black Woman to Run for Texas’s 14th Congressional District

s a native Houstonian Adrienne Bell always knew she wanted to give back to her community and has devoted her life to making strides to doing so. As an education and health advocate, Bell hopes to use this platform to bring awareness and get the conversation going on these two major topics while representing the Democratic party as she joins the race for U.S Congress TX-14.

My campaign speaks on the issues that relates to the people, healthcare, fully funded education. Raising minimum wage where people can actually live on their salary.

Our campaign focuses on what the people needs and their issues so at the end of the day they can take care of their family,” said Bell.

So that people are able to have a platform for their families to succeed she has a plan for a $100 Billion grant for new investments that can help create more jobs in the district while building new industries and rebuilding infrastructure.

With raising two kids and as a graduate of Our Lady of The Lake University and Houston Baptist University, and a current EdD candidate at Texas Southern University, she has proven that a woman can have it all and vows to fight for women’s rights in more ways than one.

“I am for a woman’s right to choose what she does with her body and aim to make sure her voice is heard,” said Bell.

rights, gay rights, or people of color and she wants to be a voice for the people who feel they do not have a voice. When asked what else she would like to accomplish with her campaign and if elected she expressed that she believes healthcare is a human right and plans to enforce a Medicare for All plan which will fight against the loss of protection for pre-existing conditions and cover mental illness.

Bell is also a big advocate for education.

She is a second grade teacher in the largest school district in Texas and wants to fight for quality education for all.

Currently most districts spend so much

time teaching to one standardized test that the progress of the students overall learning gets lost in the crossfire which is why a goal for Bell would be to get rid of standardized testing all together.

Funding for early childhood education has also been cut in Texas and she hopes to change that by making it a requirement.

Adrienne Bell hopes to improve healthcare, create jobs, and enforce quality education while being a voice for the people who may feel they do not have a voice and hopes to become your Representative.

Lee Thinks Houston Airplane Incident Was Racial [TheHill.com]

ep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) said she thinks the reaction of a passenger who accused United Airlines of giving away her first-class seat to the Democratic lawmaker was race-related. Jackson Lee released a statement on Twitter after a woman claimed the airline gave away her seat to the congresswoman on her flight from Houston to Washington.

Congresswoman Lee said she followed her normal boarding procedures and did not ask or receive special treatment. She said she later learned that the woman had canceled her own flight. The airline issued the woman, Jean-Marie Simon, a $500 voucher after the incident and she was reassigned to the plane’s economy section.

Maame Biney

Biney is First Black Woman On US Olympic Speedskating Team [VOANews.com]

T

his month, Ghana-born teen Maame Biney qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team after finishing first in the women’s 500-meter trial in Kearns, Utah. At age 17, she is the youngest speedskater on the U.S. team and the first African American woman to represent the country as a speedskater.

Biney’s achievements have earned her fans around the world, particularly in West Africa, where skating isn’t common. She hopes girls watch her and become inspired to pursue their own dreams. Despite her accomplishments, the high schooler doesn’t take herself too seriously. “I just hope that everyone sees how fun the sport is when you can just go fast and just be awesome. Not that I am awesome or anything, but just — you feel good about yourself, so yeah.

Houston Surpasses Milestone In Fight Against Homelessness [Patch.com/texas/Houston]

ayor Sylvester Turner, staff and The Way Home announced that the goal to house 500 chronically homeless individuals in six months in the Houston area has been surpassed.

Turner said that between March and August 2017, that homeless service agencies and hundreds of city staff members have helped place 548 chronically homeless individuals into permanent supportive housing programs. In March 2017, Turner announced a comprehensive and holistic approach to reducing homelessness, challenging the homeless response community to intensify efforts to permanently house the most vulnerable chronically homeless individuals on Houston’s streets.

exas ‘dreamers’ expressed their disappointment that the U.S. Congress will start its winter recess without addressing the situation of beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, but they vowed to keep pressuring lawmakers in 2018 and demanding they provide a solution for their uncertain future in America. Congress approved this Continuing Resolution that averts a government shutdown, but the lawmakers didn’t include any fix for the expiring DACA program. For the past few months, the so-called “dreamer” movement has conducted a nationwide campaign urging lawmakers to take action before the end of the year by passing what they call a “clean DREAM Act.”

woman who started out as a grill worker and now owns multiple restaurants is pledging $500,000 for the International African American Museum that’s being developed in Charleston. The museum announced Carolyn Hunter’s gift Thursday. Officials hope to break ground next summer on the project, which is expected to cost $75 million. Hunter is president of C&A Unlimited Inc., which owns McDonald’s restaurants in Ladson and Summerville. She started her career as a McDonald’s grill worker after graduating from a community college in 1977. Museum CEO Michael Boulware said Hunter’s story exemplifies the American dream.

Texas Population Grew to 28.3 Million in 2017 [TexasTribune.org]

fter gaining almost 400,000 new residents in one year, Texas is now home to 28.3 million people. New estimates by the Census Bureau show Texas crossed that population threshold between July 2016 and July 2017 following years of steady growth since the 2010 Census when the state’s population topped off at 25.1 million. Texas had the seventh fastest growth rate in the country in the past year – 1.4 percent – and it experienced the biggest numeric population growth of any state. But unlike last year, a majority of the state’s growth came from natural increase Texans having more babies and not people moving to the state. Of the roughly 400,000 residents the state gained over the past year, the addition of 209,690 residents was attributed to natural increase.

Toys “R” Us Isn’t Closing Stores [StyleMagazine.com Newswire]

his should be the most wonderful time of the year for Toys “R” Us. Instead, the ailing toy store chain, which filed for bankruptcy in September, is staving off reports about imminent store closures. Same-store sales fell 4.4% last quarter, which ended October. In the U.S., samestore sales were down 7%. In the wake of the company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, Toys “R” Us has had to contend with lost consumer confidence and strained vendor relationships, Brandon said. There was even a temporary interruption in shipping that hit inventory. Then there’s the baby problem.

Much of the growth in baby product sales is online, Brandon said.

oday, I read one of the best written articles I’ve read all year in the Washington Post. It was about ex NFL player Larry Johnson and his struggles since retiring from football. The main thing I got from the article was something he said when he was talking about his daughter.

I’m paraphrasing but it went, “When I found out I was having a daughter I knew God had a sense of humor. With all the bad things I’ve done to women he gave me a daughter in hopes that I raise her to never want to date a man like me.”

ago would I want my daughter dating a man like me I would have told you of course not. My answer today would be different because I’m not the man I was.

I’ve never been this guy that abused women or cheated on women but I was so emotionally unavailable and not ready to accept someone loving me.

That can be just as damaging as being abusive. Dating is already difficult in our generation because we compare ourselves to complete strangers and the people we used to be.

That stuck out to me because most men that have done women wrong are terrified of having daughters because they feel as though karma is going to come back around in the form of their daughter getting her heart broken and maybe worse.

Combine that with the guilt and fear of passing down your worst traits to your mini-me and it can wear on you.

Every time she cries or has a crush you worry that this is the moment it’s about to happen.

I personally don’t believe in karma but I believe in guilt. I think if you’re a man and you’re afraid of having a daughter you need to come to grips with the idea that you haven’t forgiven yourself. If you’d have asked me ten years ago, five years

Ford Freedom Unsung celebrates these extraordinary individuals and organizations within communities across the country whose achievements may otherwise go unacknowledged.

Made possible by a grant from Ford Motor Company Fund, Ford Freedom Unsung salutes and honors those who have positively impacted communities and whose achievements serve to enlighten and inspire others.

In recognition of the many heroic and selfless acts taken during Hurricane Harvey, this special edition of Ford Freedom Unsung will honor and celebrate local individuals who went above and beyond to support the community during this difficult time.

To be considered for an award, nominees should be people whose actions in response to Hurricane Harvey uplifted the Greater Houston region and moved the community forward.

Honorees will be recognized at a special Black History month event and program on Monday, February 12, 2018 at the Bell Tower on 34th, 901 W 34th Street, Houston, TX 77018.

All nominations must be completed and postmarked or received by email no later than January 22, 2018 in order to be considered by the Board of Judges.

Maintain good oral health. People living with diabetes are two times more likely to develop gum disease, according to the

The Accommodations

When I received word that I was visiting Panama City Beach, Florida, I was thrilled to say the least. Besides loving “The Sunshine State,” I have always heard of “The World’s Most Beautiful Beaches” along the panhandle and there is no denying that the sayings are true. During my visit, I was lucky enough to stay at the only AAA Four Diamond Rated resort in Panama City Beach. Known as a Florida vacation destination for generations of memories, the property was built in the 1980s and reopened as in 2017 after an impressive $30 million-dollar renovation and rebranding.

Throw in the amazing staff; this resort is almost heaven on earth. I arrived to be greeted by the doorman Adam who went over and beyond to ensure my arrival was terrific.

Once I made it to the front desk, the agent Michael made sure I was well informed about all of the amenities that the resort has to offer. From the natural beauty of the property, the modern new design, distinctive resort dining options, more

than 60,000 sq. ft. of group space, and full service spa; it was clear upon arrival why Sheraton Bay Point Resort is a Florida visiting guest favorite. No bragging here, but add the Nicklaus Design golf course, a private bay beach (which I loved), three pools, direct boat access to Shell Island, water sports and tennis, the Sheraton Bay Point Resort literally an oasis!

I started my mornings off with the Traditional Breakfast dish but there is also a breakfast buffet option For dinner, there is no denying the deliciousness that you will find at The Grand Marlin Restaurant. Between time and tide, The Grand Marlin serves a fresh and delicious flare of items while overlooking the Grand Lagoon. My evening dinner started with the Crispy Lobster Fingers served with vanilla bean infused honey mustard sauce. I decided to go big for entrée and boy was I in for a succulent surprise.

The 14 ounce 1855 Angus rib eye served with herb roasted fingerling potatoes and seasonal vegetables what described as the best-cut meat in Panama City Beach and after my first bite, I surely believed it. Special thanks to my wonderful server Natalie who made sure my accommodations were impeccable.

On A Personal Note

I thoroughly enjoyed PCB. I had the opportunity to interact with locals and everyone was warm and welcoming. There is no denying that Panama City Beach is truly a year round, friendly family destination.

The town was easy to navigate throughout and I had no problem fitting in.

The Sheraton Bay Point Resort accommodations were outstanding. The staff really goes out of their way to make you feel as if you are home. The property is definitely highly recommended.

This new frame and style is part of Toyota’s new Global Architecture or TNGA that makes the vehicle more dynamic, athletic and fun drive to drive.

With this new model, the Camry will attract more than just families but single professionals looking for an upgrade from their college rides as they enter the workforce. It is professional when you need to impress and exhilarating when you want a thrill.

The word of the day for Toyota is low.

The new body has a lower hood and roofline designed for more than style but for better aerodynamics and drive. Seating height has also been lowered and the front seats have been sculpted to hug the body more. Don’t think with these lower dimensions that occupants will now be crammed into the cabin. Toyota Camry is not lacking space in any capacity. More lowering was done to the dashboard to give off a more open design concept.

Toyota offers the Camry in three different powertrains: 2.5-liter 4-cylinder (203 horsepower), a 3.5-litre V6 (301 horsepower) and a 4-cylinder hybrid. All of them have been modified for fuel efficiency with the hybrid, of course, giving the best of saving gas and moving fast. Handing and control are excellent on the Camry so drivers can really go places with a more than decent acceleration.

One area that Toyota will always remain as the shining star is with its safety. Every

I can live out my racecar dreams behind the wheel of a machine with a sport-tuned suspension and revised steering calibration. Paddle shifters and 18-inch wheels make the drive even more exciting.

In 1983 a little over 50,000 Toyota Camrys were sold. That number grew to over 380,000 in 2016. Buyers remain loyal to Toyota so they constantly up their game to keep them coming back by offering more for a fair price. If Toyota keeps evolving at the current pace it is on, it will remain king of the mid-size sedan market. Reduce heat to low. Add beans and gently simmer uncovered 3 minutes. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste, before serving.

Bo Porter’s Empowered Summit Photography by Vicky Pink o Porter Enterprise presented the Houston Empowered Summit in partnership with the Stacey & Bo Porter SELF Foundation to help attendees reflect, revive and re-energize throughout the year. The spiritual audit and transformational movement for God’s kingdom featured nine spiritually-led presenters including Greg Glenn, Minister Carl Johnson, Minister Irving Johnson, Minister Lance Mann, Lisa Austin-Granville, Minister David Yasko, Jill Robin-Payne, Marva Hanks, and Minister Freddie Brigham. The event was based on Bo Porter’s best selling book REal Life EMPOWERED with the mission of allowing attendees to discover the power within and be victorious for Him. Proceeds from the summit benefited the SELF Care Hurricane Harvey Relief and Sponsor a Child.

Meyerland Area Democrats 15th Anniversary

Photography by Vicky Pink he Meyerland Area Democrats celebrated fifteen years of electing and supporting Democratic candidates and promoting issues of concern to Democrats. As one of Texas’ and Houston’s most politically active organizations the club has organized the highest voter turnout precincts in Harris County and have raised funds for Democrats locally and statewide. Its focus is on the precincts in the Meyerland Area of Southwest Houston as its core precincts to turn Harris County, Texas and the nation BLUE. Congresswoman Jackson Lee states “this holiday season is especially difficult as families struggle to recover from Hurricane Harvey. Every child, regardless of its economic status, deserves the opportunity to celebrate the holidays, as it should be. This celebration will ensure that these children are afforded this opportunity and can spend a joyful holiday with their loved ones.”

Ron Reynolds, Armando Walle, John Zerwas, and other legislative leaders were pleased to announce a $500,000 grant from The Metropolitan Organization to Capital IDEA-Houston at a recent press conference. TMO is a grassroots organization of Houston congregations that helps Houston families. In the same token, Capital IDEA works to uplift people out of poverty by putting them on a career path to take them from low end jobs to middle class jobs. The grant will support this adult career education initiative.
