COMMENTARY True Scandal In Puerto Rican Recovery Effort Is Trump’s Dereliction

T

oday is an election day in many parts of America. There are key gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey.

A single special election in a suburban Seattle district could win Democrats control of the Washington Senate and thus control of the entire state government. Charlotte, N.C., could elect the first black female mayor ever.

A record 43 women are vying for seats in the Virginia House of Delegates. Voters in Maine will decide whether to extend Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. All eligible Americans should take the time to vote. The right to vote is the foundation of our republic. It is also -- and has always been -- contested territory. Originally, voting was restricted to white, male property owners. Against fierce resistance, citizen movements forced it to be extended -- to all white males, to women, to African-Americans at the ash end of segregation, to young people.

The right to vote was a centerpiece of the civil rights movement here, of the movement against apartheid in South Africa. Medgar Evers, Dr. Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela understood: The right to vote is not just a mark of equal citizenship; it is central to self-determination. Enforcing the right to vote would bring an end to apartheid in

uesday night was very big for Democrats as the party won the governors’ races in Virginia and New Jersey and scored a series of other victories from Maine to Washington State that suggests the forces opposed to President Donald Trump turned up in large numbers to send a message that they weren’t happy with how he is doing the job. Democrats -- and Governors-elect Ralph Northam (Virginia) and Phil Murphy (New Jersey) in particular -- were big winners. But who were some of the less obvious winners -and losers! -- on Tuesday? That’s where I come in! Below are my picks for the best and the worst of the night that was.

WINNERS

* Ralph Northam: In both the Democratic primary earlier this year and again Tuesday night, Northam overperformed expectations. There were lots and lots of Northam doubters in Democratic circles -- he’s too boring! He won’t sell in northern Virginia! -- I talked to in the final 72 hours of the race.

But Northam’s country doctor routine worked its magic again. Northam may well be the most underrated politician of the year. And kudos to his campaign team -- led by manager Brad Komar -- for running a race that was both true to Northam’s

the U.S. and in South Africa. Voting is still contested territory today. Across the country, right-wing Republicans have pushed to make voting more difficult for the poor, the young, workers and minorities.

They seek to make registration harder, to require various forms of ID, to cut the days and hours for voting, to purge voter lists, to close down the number of polling booths and more. These measures had dramatic effect in many states in 2016, including in Wisconsin, and arguably may have cost Hillary Clinton the election.

Every vote counts. Surely the 2016 election made that clear: 77,000 votes in three states made the difference in the Electoral College. Everyone talks about the voters who went from Obama to Trump, but a far larger number of Obama voters simply ended up not voting.

Too many still choose not to vote, especially in so-called off-year elections, when the presidency is not at stake. The fall-off is particularly extreme in the core of the progressive base: single women, millennials and people of color. By choosing not to vote, they forfeit the power that was won only after the sacrifice and struggle of many.To go from being denied the right to vote to

choosing not to vote is to surrender. It aids and abets those conspiring to suppress the vote. It insures that your voice is muted, while others gain more volume. To fail to vote is essentially to support the side of Trump, of George Wallace, of the Koch brothers, who know they can win only when large numbers of people stay home.

Northam may not inspire, but a Gillespie victory would insure that cesspool politics spreads across the country in 2018. Virginians who choose not to vote today surrender to those who will drive us apart.

Young people of the so-called millennial generation have more eligible voters than any other. They have every reason to vote.

Vote to make college affordable and gain relief from crippling student debts. Vote for affordable health care. Vote for the right to a job. Vote for livable wages. Vote for action against catastrophic climate change that, unchecked, will make your world less habitable. Vote so the concerns of young people cannot be ignored.

Sometimes the choices are narrow, but life can be in those cracks. If single women, young people and minorities vote in large numbers, the candidates they elect may not champion their entire agenda. But they -- and future candidates -- will pay more attention.

Some argue that an election doesn’t offer a clear choice, that neither candidate champions the causes or the agenda that would inspire them. In Virginia, for example, the Democratic candidate for governor, Ralph Northam, is a decent, uninspiring, moderate establishment figure. He’s run a cautious, defensive campaign almost designed to reduce turnout. His opponent, Republican Ed Gillespie, has run a vile and divisive campaign drawn straight from the playbook

By voting, we gain power. By choosing not to vote, we surrender it. We cannot afford to do less than our best. We cannot create the society we want if we surrender our power to choose. Vote today and make certain your neighbor, your roommate, your coworker has voted. It makes a difference.

Winners and Losers From the 2017 Election Analysis by Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large centrist roots and a winner. * Terry McAuliffe: The outgoing Virginia governor is a popular presence in the state and Northam, generally speaking, ran on a message of continuing the McAuliffe legacy. It worked. And McAuliffe, because he’s McAuliffe, was quick to take credit for it in an interview with CNN even before the results were known. If you don’t think Tuesday’s results in Virginia don’t make it more likely McAuliffe runs for president in 2020, you don’t know Terry. * Doug Jones: If there was any question about whether national Democrats should fund Jones’ special Senate election race later this year against Roy Moore in Alabama, Tuesday night’s results probably took care of that. Given the activation of the Democratic base -- particularly non-white voters -- and Moore’s divisiveness, Jones looks like less of a long shot today than he did Tuesday. * Joe Biden: The former vice president was very active on the stump for 2017 Democratic candidates -- including Northam, Murphy and Jones in Alabama. During a visit to Virginia for Northam in mid-October,Biden told the crowd: “You have to win to ... give people hope we are not falling into this know-nothing pit.” And, in the wake of the election results Tuesday night, Biden tweet-

ed this: “A resounding defeat tonight for President Trump. Voters around the country rejected the ugly politics we have seen this past year. Instead, they chose candidates who unite and inspire us.” Sounds a lot like a line from a Biden 2020 speech, no? * Donna Brazile: If Northam had lost or Democrats more broadly would have underwhelmed at the ballot box on Tuesday, the story of Democratic division -- and Brazile’s new book that lays much of it bare -- would be the only thing that people would be talking about. Now, there’s a much better narrative for Democrats out there and the inconsistencies between Brazile’s book and her recent public statementsabout the campaign are likely to recede into the background. * NoVa suburbs: The winning formula for Democrats in Virginia is now shockingly simple: Run up the score -- bigly -- in northern Virginia. Northam beat Gillespie by 212,000 votes in Arlington (+52,000), Fairfax (+137,000) and Loudoun (+23,000).

His statewide margin? Two-hundred and thirty-two thousand votes. * Tom Perriello: The former congressman lost his primary challenge to Northam earlier this year. Rather than remain embittered and sitting out the rest of the race, Perriello

signed out with an political organization -- Win Virginia -- that aimed to reduce Republicans’ 66-34 edge in the state Assembly. Led by Perriello, Democrats did much more than that; a real possibility exists that they will hold 50 seats in the Assembly when all the votes are counted.

That’s a stunning achievement.

LOSERS

* Donald Trump: The President tweeted shortly after Gillespie’s loss insisting that if the GOP nominee had only hewed closer to him, the results might have been different.

There’s simply no empirical evidence in exit polling or the raw data that suggests that contention to be true. Half of the Virginia voters said Trump was a factor in their vote on Tuesday, with twice as many saying they wanted to send Trump a message of opposition as said they wanted to send him a message of support. In places like Loudoun and Chesterfield counties -- exurban and suburban, respectively -- Gillespie badly underperformed past GOP nominees. Adjusting for all variables, it’s hard not to see how that difference is primarily attributable to Trump.

ayor Sylvester Turner made a major push for voters to say yes to bond propositions A, B, C, D, and E and it worked. All city propositions passed to his delight including the $1billion pension bond that will shrink the city’s pension liability (that stands at $8 billion plus) taking it from the red to the black without raising taxes. Although some benefits for employees were cut, the city is putting funds into the police pension and municipal workers fund. This is also a big win for city employees since many of them would have loss their jobs if it has not passed. Mayor Turner called the passage of the legislation “a victory for the city of Houston.” Other cities are taking close look at Houston to resolve their own financial woes.

UIW Students in “Blackface” Spark Social Media Protest [Fox News San Antonio]

A

student protest is now underway over a Halloween joke that may have gone too far. Social media posts show UIW students posing in “blackface.” The painted faces were part of their Halloween costumes. The students were portraying characters made famous

by Tyler Perry. The UIW students reportedly paraded around campus in blackface portrayals then posted pictures on social media. Members of UTSA’s Black Student Leadership Counsel staged a Twitter blast Wednesday using #UIWPride to raise awareness. It generated an immediate response from UIW leaders who tweeted “UIW does not tolerate any discriminatory actions or comments from members of our community.

ans who chose METRORail to get to the Astros World Series Parade set a new record for single day ridership.

The agency tallied 395,000 boardings on Friday, Nov. 3. METRORail’s Red, Green and Purple Lines had a combined 125,000 boardings. That exceeds the previous record set in February the day before Super Bowl LI by 16,000. Meanwhile, boardings on the local bus and Park & Ride combined were 270,000. METRO adjusted train routes, reworked detours and added trains to accommodate the record breaking ridership, parade route changes, and congested downtown streets. The work to keep the region moving continued behind the scenes. The demand demonstrates both the interest and need for continued investment in high-quality mass.

African American Reporter Takes Stand After Body-Shaming [NBCNews.com]

A

woman’s comments that an African-American female news reporter in Dallas “looks ridiculous” in her clothes has sparked outrage on social media. Wednesday morning, a woman on Facebook posted a photo of WFAA Channel 8 News traffic reporter Demetria Obilor wearing a red dress, criticizing the way she looked in her dress. The post has since been taken down. “She’s a 16/18 woman in a size 6 dress and looks ridiculous,” the post said. The woman also said she would stop watching the news channel. Obilor, 26, has been a traffic reporter at the station for two weeks. Having been in the business almost four years, she said she isn’t hurt by the comments and has thick skin.

r. Dwalah Fisher was selected as one of the nine class members to be inducted into the 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hall of Fame. Fisher, who serves as the assistant director and senior woman administrator for TSU Athletics, was a top volleyball player at Texas Southern. She earned three All-SWAC nods and four All-Tournament honors for the Lady Tigers and her team won three conference titles. exas executed a Mexican national late Wednesday night despite a flurry of last-minute appeals and objections from his native country and United Nations human rights experts. Death row inmate Ruben Cárdenas had several appeals pending before the U.S. Supreme Court when the scheduled time of his execution — 6 p.m.

— rolled around. The high court denied all appeals almost four hours later, setting his execution into process. In his final words, Cárdenas thanked his family, friends, attorneys and the Mexican government for their help. Cárdenas, 47, was injected with a lethal dose of pentobarbital and pronounced dead at 10:26 p.m. He was convicted and sentenced to death in the 1997.

Texas Education Officials Reject Mexican-American Studies Textbook [TexasTribune.org]

or the second time in the last year, the State Board of Education rejected a proposed Mexican-American studies textbook, leaving teachers without any state-approved materials for teaching the course. The board voted nearly unanimously Wednesday to reject author Tony Diaz’s textbook “The Mexican-American Studies Toolkit,” a year after rejecting a different book that Mexican-American studies experts called racist. Though most did not vote for the book, Democrats on the board argued the process was not fair to Diaz, saying he was given a short period of time and little guidance to create a high-quality book. Just one member voted for Diaz’s book.

During Diabetes Awareness Month

hen an eye doctor peers into the back of your eye, a diabetes diagnosis could be staring back.

An eye examination can be the first step in detecting diabetic retinopathy, a condition where high blood sugar damages blood vessels in the light-sensitive part of the eye, the retina. Bleeding, swelling and scarring in the retina can cause permanent vision loss.

“Since about 20 percent of people with Type 2 diabetes have diabetic retinopathy at the time of diagnosis, an eye exam may be the event that leads to the diagnosis of diabetes,” said Danica Marrelli, University of Houston clinical professor and director of the Ocular Diagnostic and Medical Eye Service. She notes that patients with diabetes should have regular eye examinations to look for early signs of diabetic retinopathy. “Some of the early changes can occur without symptoms, and it is important to catch treatable retinopathy at its earliest stage. Even when the vision seems normal, changes may be occurring,” said Marrelli.

Where the eyes are concerned, they don’t merely tell the tale; they also suffer many more of the consequences. In addition to diabetic retinopathy, people with diabetes are more likely to have glaucoma and develop cataracts earlier. Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve that can lead to permanent blindness without treatment. It doesn’t have any symptoms and can only be detected through a comprehensive eye exam. Cataracts occur when the lens inside

the eye becomes cloudy and cause blurred vision. Vision loss from cataracts is reversible with surgery to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear lens implant, but cataract surgery may worsen diabetic retinopathy. Diabetes can cause many other serious health issues, including heart disease and stroke. The good news, according to the National Institutes of Health, is that Type 2 diabetes can be delayed or even prevented by losing a modest amount of weight and being physically active most days of the week.

By the numbers

Though that might sound simple, when it comes to diabetes, the statistics indicate it is anything but: One out of 11 Americans are diabetic. Even worse, one out of four have no clue they are ill. Often called a “silent killer,” diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death among Americans. Out of the 30.3 million people with the disease in the United States, 95 percent have Type 2 diabetes. The problem is even greater in minority and ethnic populations, a focus of the UH Health initiative.

“There are medical deserts, where there’s not a whole lot of mental or physical health services built into the communities,” said Professor Ezemenari M. Obasi, director of the UH HEALTH (Helping Everyone Achieve a LifeTime of Health) Research Institute, which focuses on health disparities. 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 8 small red potatoes, skin-on and diced (about 3 cups)

1 red bell pepper, diced 3 teaspoons minced garlic 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, finely chopped, plus additional for topping 1 teaspoon fresh oregano, finely chopped, plus additional for topping 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2/3 cup milk 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 slices low-sodium turkey bacon, cooked near crispy 1/4 cup finely grated reduced-fat sharp cheddar cheese In large skillet over medium heat, melt butter then add potatoes, bell peppers, garlic, thyme and oregano, stirring occasionally until potatoes are fork-tender.

Sprinkle flour over potato mixture and stir to coat. Gradually stir in milk until sauce forms. Season with salt and pepper and stir in slices of turkey bacon. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese and cover, allowing to melt 1-2 minutes. Uncover and top with additional herbs, if desired, before serving.

Pair each serving with 8-ounce glass of milk.

They cleared your path and knocked aside obstacles. You stand on the shoulders of those giants even if, as in the new book “Keep Your Airspeed Up” by Harold H. Brown (with Marsha S. Bordner), the giant was once kinda scrawny.

Growing up in Minneapolis in the pre-World War II years, Harold H. Brown says that he and his brother “Bubba” were “mongrel dogs”: their maternal line was white-Jewish-Black; their paternal ancestors were African American and possibly Native American. Both boys were light-complexioned with straight hair, which Brown believes may have helped him later in his career.

The Art and Soul of Nigeria Reception Photography by Vicky Pink ouston is known for its diversity and is home to the largest Nigerian populations outside of Africa. In celebration of the culture and creativity of Nigeria, the Gite Gallery unveiled a new collection of fine art by Nigerian artists called “The Art and Soul of Nigeria.” Many in attendance at the opening reception admired the gorgeous portraits of Nigerian men and women to the depictions of Nigerian music and dance. The paintings were colorful, vibrant and filled with stories that capture the rich culture of the African country.

Gallery owner, Lloyd Gite, who curated the exhibition, was also onsite to share his personal experiences. Some in attendance were Kim Gagne, La’Torria Lemon, Emilian White, Arthur McElroy, Jacqueline McElroy, and Mark Anthony Hawkins.

Indianapolis Colts Photography by Semetra Samuel he Houston Texans celebrated service members during their game against the Indianapolis Colts in the annual Salute to Service game presented by Bud Light. Former President George H.W. Bush did the coin toss. The Houston Texans, however, fell short of beating the Indianapolis Colts. It was their first game with Tom Savage filling in as quarterback for the injured Deshaun Watson. Head Coach Bill O’Brien said the Texans will need to coach and play better in order to win games. This game did have one highlight for the Texans as they recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown for the second time this season. They also had 3.0 sacks as a team for a loss of 29 total yards and had 15 players record at least one tackle and five players record five-or-more total tackles on defense.
