We Must Rescue And Rebuild Puerto Rico

hat obligations do we owe one to another as Americans? What does patriotism and citizenship mean in practice? Hurricane Maria’s devastation of Puerto Rico has posed these questions.

Americans should be dissatisfied with the way our federal government has responded.

The island has been utterly savaged by the worst hurricane in memory. Weeks after the tragedy, parts of Puerto Rico still have no water. The electricity grid is utterly destroyed. Fuel is short. Generators provide what electricity there is. The death toll, currently at 38, is likely to rise further.

The danger of epidemics sweeping through families weakened by hunger and exposure is stark.

Even before the hurricane hit, Puerto Rico was literally bankrupt. Its efforts to declare bankruptcy and to renegotiate its unpayable debts were fiercely contested. Wall Street bankers were enforcing a harsh austerity on the island. One of the reasons the island was so vulnerable was that it was unable to modernize dated energy and water systems, or to build the resilient infrastructure needed in this new age of catastrophic climate events.

Puerto Rico is an American territory; its people are American citizens. Like those living in New Orleans in the wake of Katrina or Houston in the wake of Harvey, they can abandon their homes, move to another part of the country and start over. In Houston, in Florida and in New Jersey, the federal

government moved in to help with emergency assistance and to spur rebuilding of homes and infrastructure. In New Orleans after Katrina, the botched federal response became a national scandal for the Bush administration.

When he finally visited the disaster last week, he seemed intent on ignoring reality while boasting about the federal response.

He claimed Puerto Rico hadn’t experienced a “real catastrophe” like Hurricane Katrina, and bizarrely praised the official death toll (at the time, 16) as something Puerto Ricans “can be very proud of.”

Trump also told disaster survivors that “you don’t need” the flashlights he was handing to them, apparently ignorant of the fact that 93 percent of the island remained without power. Even as he touted a “tax reform” plan that would gift $5 trillion dollars in tax breaks to the rich and corporations over the next decade, he complained to the American citizens in Puerto Rico that they had “thrown our budget a little bit out of whack.” At the same time, Trump praised his administration’s response as “unbelievable” and “incredible.” His advisers called it a “good news story.”

But this isn’t reality TV; it is reality. The administration’s response to the plight of Americans in Puerto Rican has been scandalous. As Jeremy Konyndyk detailed in the Washington Post, the 14,000 federal personnel initially deployed fell far short

of the the numbers deployed for Harvey or Irma. Fewer air assets were sent initially -- nine helicopters and airplanes -- than the 11 deployed to assist Haiti after Hurricane Matthew or the 66 deployed to the Philippines after the typhoon in 2013. The U.S. federal response to the Haitian earthquake in 2010 was significantly greater the efforts currently underway to aid American citizens in Puerto Rico. This isn’t a game. The lives of American citizens have and will be lost because of the belated and inadequate response.

How should American citizens be treated in a crisis of this magnitude? Surely, mobilization to provide disaster relief should be immediate and sufficient in scale to deal with the emergency. Then the U.S. should invest in rebuilding the core public infrastructure of Puerto Rico -- the electric and water systems, the roads and bridges.

This would not only make the island more resilient for the next crisis; it would also provide immediate jobs and help with the economic recovery.

Puerto Rico bears a staggering and unpayable $74 billion in debt. During his trip to the island, Trump remarked cryptically that “we’re going to have to wipe that out.”

Wall Street went nuts, and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin quickly denied the president had meant what he said.

Trump, who has bragged that he is the “king of debt,” could use his experience

with bankruptcy to negotiate wholesale debt relief for Puerto Rico. The Wall Street bankers who made improvident loans should refinance them for pennies on the dollar.

That would give the island’s residents breathing room to begin to recover. If he chose to lead, Trump could push through a major program of aid -- a Trump Plan for Puerto Rico modeled on the Marshall Plan for Europe after World War II -- that would rebuild the island and insure jobs and growth for its residents.

The cost would be far less than the hundreds of billions in tax breaks Trump has proposed for U.S. corporations that have booked profits abroad to avoid paying federal taxes. Why not benefit citizens who are victims of disaster through no fault of their own rather than corporate tax evaders?

The alternative is an American commonwealth ravaged by poverty and disease, a million or more citizens forced to leave their homes and move to the mainland, and a shameful statement that there are still second-class citizens in America. Puerto Ricans are Americans. We should not fail them in a desperate time of need.

ven as the Trump administration is asking Congress to approve a tough overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws, the Department of Homeland Security is also quietly exploring ways it could transform the US immigration system on its own.

The department has been examining a range of subtle modifications to immigration policies that could have major consequences, including limiting protections for unaccompanied minors who come to the US illegally, expanding the use of speedy deportation proceedings, and tightening visa programs in ways that could limit legal immigration to the US, according to multiple sources familiar with the plans.

The Trump administration has portrayed the UAC protections as a loophole in the law that can be exploited by gangs, though experts have testified before Congress that the minors under the program are more likely to be victimized by gangs in the US due to a lack of a support network than to be gang members. The administration also has sought to crack down on parents who pay smugglers to bring their children into the US illegally, even to escape dangerous situations in Central America.

ndia Landry is a Cy-Fair ISD senior at Windfern High School who is no longer sure when she’ll be able to graduate after she says she was kicked out of school for not standing for the Pledge of Allegiance.

It’s something she says she’s done for years, but it was never a problem until now. Her mother says they’ve tried to work it out, but then the district began citing India’s grades and absences. Months away from graduating, India says she may only have two options: stand or get her diploma. The school district has a policy that if you don’t say the Pledge of Allegiance; you still stand unless you have a note from your parents. India’s mother tried to write a note but was told her daughter will not be allowed back at all until she stands, with or without that note.

Why Houston Turned Down Debris Collection Help From Dallas [Click2houston.com]

ouston Mayor Sylvester Turner announced on Wednesday that the city of Houston has removed more than 1 million cubic yards of Hurricane Harvey debris. The mayor made the announcement during the weekly City Council meeting, adding that the Solid Waste Management Department has completed a first pass for storm debris collection in every neighborhood. During a news conference following the City Council meeting, the mayor did admit that there are pockets that remain untouched. This comes at a time when Channel 2 Investigates has learned that Mayor Turner turned down relief services from Dallas two weeks ago to help with storm debris removal.

Threats to Kill Obama Net Local Man Five Years of Prison [MySanAntonio.com]

A

Central Texas man who threatened to kill former President Barack Obama, judges, federal prosecutors and agents, among others, was sentenced Tuesday to 63 months in federal prison.

Gavin Leonard Friedman, 21, who has lived in Kerrville and Austin, mailed letters with a series of threats over several months in 2016. In September 2016, for example, he sent letters to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Antonio expressing some threats while he was incarcerated at the Kerr County Jail.

In some of those letters, he called Obama “a puppet for (ZOG) Zionist Organized Government,” referred to Obama derogatorily or profanely, and said he would kill Obama so Friedman could be “martyred in the name of Allah,” court records show.

ouston rappers “Just Brittany” and “Z-RO” made an appearance in court concerning the aggravated assault case she filed against him. “Just Brittany’s,” whose real name is Brittany Bullock, attorney Lisa Bloom wasted no time correcting an earlier report that “ZRO,” whose real name is Joseph McVey, has been cleared of all criminal charges. A grand jury “no billed” the felony charge.

Bloom and “Just Brittany” were in court seeking a permanent protective order from “Z-RO.” “Just Brittany” says she has forgiven “Z-RO” for the alleged beating incident. If convicted of misdemeanor assault on a family member, “Z-RO” could spend up to a year in jail.

allas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ comments ordering his players not to disrespect the American flag during the playing of the national anthem before games, have led to a labor union filing what is known as a charge. The Local 100 United Labor Union’s Chief Organizer Wade Rathke says they have filed the charge with the Fort Worth office of the National Labor Relations Board. Rathke told CBS11 in a phone interview that Mr. Jones’ orders are illegal. “To all of a sudden threaten people that you’re going to bench them or fire them or write them up or whatever else for exercising these rights is against the law,” said Rathke. An investigator with the NLRB will now look into the filing and see if there is any merit in the claims.

Pregnant Immigrant In Texas Will Test Abortion Access Under Trump [Austin Statesman]

A

pregnant 17-year-old, in federal custody in Texas after being apprehended while crossing the Mexican border illegally, is seeking an emergency court order to allow her to have an abortion that has been thwarted by Trump administration officials. Lawyers with the American Civil Liberties Union, representing the teenager identified only as Jane Doe, will appear Wednesday before a federal judge in California to request an order allowing the teen to obtain an abortion as soon as possible.

The lawyers also will request a wider order barring Trump administration officials from “obstructing or interfering with abortion access” for other pregnant minors who were arrested after crossing the border without their parents.

The offending ad was a 3-second GIF hawking Dove body wash that was posted Friday to the brand’s Facebook page. It was taken down Saturday. CNNMoney reviewed a copy of the GIF. Introduced with the line “Ready for a Dove Shower?” it shows a looping image of a black woman removing a dark brown t-shirt to reveal a white woman. She then removes her beige t-shirt to show a third woman. “This did not represent the diversity of real beauty which is something Dove is passionate about and is core to our beliefs, and it should not have happened,” the company said in a statement Sunday.

Muhammad Ali Entreprises Sues Fox for $30 Million [CNN/StyleMagazine.com Newswire]

uhammad Ali Enterprises is suing Fox Broadcasting Company after the network allegedly used the boxer’s likeness without permission. The company wants $30 million for Ali’s inclusion in a 3-minute Super Bowl commercial that ran on Fox this year. The suit alleges that the 3-minute video may have reached over 111 million viewers of the Super Bowl and that Fox could’ve sold it to other advertisers for a total of $30 million. Super Bowl ads sell for an average of $5 million for 30 seconds. Fox didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

he FBI has declared that “black identity extremism” is a violent threat in the US according to a leaked report. The document obtained

by Foreign Policy is dated August 2017 and written by the Domestic Terrorism Analysis Unit within the bureau. It read: “The FBI assesses it is very likely Black Identity Extremist (BIE) perceptions of police brutality against African Americans spurred an increase in premeditated, retaliatory lethal violence against law enforcement and will very likely serve as justification for such violence.” The FBI wrote that “alleged police abuse” is what has “continued to feed the resurgence in ideologically motivated, violent criminal activity within the BIE movement”.

TSU: 90 Years Later and Still A Force to Be Reckoned With

A

ny institution around for 90 years has its share of stories. The ones of triumph, the ones of defeat, and all the ones in between that have helped shape the institution to be stronger, more competitive and a leader in the education arena. Texas Southern University has been that pillar for Houston. This week they celebrate the students, faculty, staff, and alumni who have contributed to the making of those stories with their annual homecoming celebration themed ‘TSU Dynasty, 90 Years In, The Reign Continues.’

Ushering in this 90th year is the 12th university president, Dr. Austin Lane. Officially on the job for a little over a year, this will be his second homecoming as president. He promises if you thought last year’s homecoming was something, wait for homecoming 2017. “I can tell you this year it’s going to be even better,” said Dr. Lane as he talked about the expected 3,000 people that will be on campus for the weekend of activities.

“Whether you went to TSU or not we want to welcome you home.”

What alumni and friends will see when they return home to TSU is a university that is in transition. When Dr. Lane first became head of the helm at the historically black university he had an action plan to talk to any and everyone associated with TSU on a Listen and Learn Tour 10 10

Also getting a facelift will be the campus library that will become the university’s new museum outfitted with the latest and greatest in technology to showcase the entire TSU story. A new larger library is being planned for 2019 at the end of the Tiger Walk.

Already the third largest HBCU in the country behind #1 ranked Prairie View A&M University and #2 Tennessee State University, Dr. Lane is pushing TSU to be at the top in all areas. “We want to make sure we are a real player in the higher education market in Houston,” said Dr. Lane as he spoke about how the school has been overlooked for years.

“TSU is the heart and soul of Houston.” And he wants not just Houston to recognize that but the entire world. It is a message he is conveying with new branding starting with new billboards in the city. “We are not apologizing. We are here in Houston. We are significant. We want our students to be proud and our alums to have pride when they see those boards,” said Dr. Lane.

ot all accidents are mistakes. Some can lead to life-changing outcomes.

Ask Houston Ballet’s first Hispanic principal dancer Karina Gonzalez. While tagging along with her mother and older sister to a folk dancing class her mother was given wrong directions. Instead of her sister going to folk dancing class, both girls ending auditioning for a ballet class at the Gustavo Franklin Ballet School in Caracas, Venezuela. As things turned out, Gonzalez was accepted into the school and her sister was not. “I think it was just destiny that sent me to be there,” said Gonzalez who started taking ballet when she was seven-years-old.

From that moment on, Gonzalez’s life was consumed with all things related to ballet.

It was an instant love affair and so began her life on pointe.

She stayed at Franklin Ballet School until her graduation at sixteen-years-old and then she began her professional dancing career. Becoming skillful at technique and performance, Gonzalez was soon offered a contract to dance in America. Moving to America twelve years ago, she joined the Houston Ballet in 2010 and was promoted to principal dancer in 2013. She has been with the company for twelve years performing principal in such productions as Ben Stevenson’s Romeo and Juliet; Andre Prokovsy’s

COMMENTARY Standing with Jemele Hill Is Standing On The Side of Right

T

wo weeks ago, Jemele Hill became the most famous, or somewhat infamous sports-media personality in America.When she spent a night breaking down why the current President of the United States could be correctly called a “white supremacist,” it became yet another talking point for talking heads from other networks with an apparent conservative leaning to declare that ESPN, Hill’s employer, had a liberal agenda.

They argued that Hill should be fired or at least suspended for her remarks about the President, citing that former MLB pitcher and ESPN analyst Curt Schilling was terminated for racist, xenophobic posts on his personal Facebook account. ESPN released a statement and hastily took Hill off of her 6 p.m. SportsCenter show with Michael Smith. The statement made the situation worse as ESPN had to deal with the brunt of backlash on both sides before Hill ultimately returned to her post.

In the last month or so, the President has created a full-on war against NFL players, those of whom are majority black, for protesting the national anthem before games.

He’s used rallies and his Twitter account to lambast the league, its players, and its owners and to create a culture war between wealthy, black athletes, white ownership and his overwhelmingly white base. That fight has trickled down to NFL owner-

ship which, in the wake of the President’s remarks decided to buck at him with the empty posturing of “unity” have reverted to defending ideas of “patriotism,” all the while flatly ignoring the reason why the protests were taking place.

On Sunday, after Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones flat out drew a line in the sand in support of the President’s message about the flag, Hill returned to Twitter voicing the concern of many a supporter of the Cowboys. Jones had put players livelihoods over their humanity and dignity.

And although she did not call for a boycott of the NFL, she did allude to the one thing that may sway Jones’ mind on all of this: advertisers. So ESPN, in a basketball sense, gave those who wanted Hill suspended for calling the president a “white supremacist” a makeup call. She was suspended two weeks for what the network deemed a “second violation” of their vague social media policy.

By taking power away from Hill, ESPN has only enhanced it further. Because Hill’s voice, louder and smarter than ever can be better used as a weapon at ESPN rather than anywhere else. ESPN knows that. Her suspension, though ridiculous, will no doubt charge up more people who had quit the NFL as former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the genesis for last year’s anthem protests, remains unsigned.

he parallels between the American justice system of say the late 1940s and today aren’t so much different, especially with matters of race. Even as more crime procedurals hit television, real-life has shaped our beliefs of the justice system and a fair deal. Hollywood also knows this. It’s also figured out a way to navigate the space of telling good to great biopics in the same time frame.

In “Marshall,” the story of the first African-American Supreme Court Justice and arbiter of the Civil Rights Movement doesn’t roll out a point A-to-B story, or even rundown his life’s work like the re-telling of a Wikipedia page. Instead, the latest Chadwick Boseman starring biopic centers around one of the first significant cases he argued and won.

a black man is accused of rape and attempted murder of a white, wealthy socialite. There is a bit of paint-by-numbers in the candied version of the trial with Marshall being paired with an unwitting, inexperienced and in-over-his-head co-counsel in Sam Friedman (Josh Gad). But the film shapes Marshall to be the hero, the brilliant and idealistic lawyer and Friedman, his Jewish partner in crime who has to speak for him in court.

During a select screening earlier this week, Texas State Rep. Jarvis Johnson spoke of the necessity for films such as “Marshall” to be made. “The precedent that Thurgood Marshall set was unbelievable with how he set us on the right path,” Johnson says.

Jemele Hill In a recent op-ed of her own for ESPN’s race and culture website The Undefeated, she wrote, “My criticisms of the president were never about politics. In my eyes, they were about right and wrong. I love this country. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t want it to be better.”

Those critiques can go hand in hand with a league that pushes an enhanced risk for opioid addiction on its players, the risks of brain damage after retirement and a continued disregard for the validity of assault, sexual and domestic, perpetrated by its players against women. Considering that ESPN pays millions, if not billions of dollars

to broadcast Monday Night Football, it is a relationship that has long been in question.

Patriotism shouldn’t be compulsory.

Even if Hill’s tweets ran into a company policy that doesn’t explicitly outline what is and what is not out of bounds, they aren’t enough to consider her outright termination.

And standing by her for saying something that wasn’t on company letterhead or said directly on ESPN programming shouldn’t warrant a suspension either. The right side of history in regards to civil rights is staring everyone in the face. Choosing dignity overall shouldn’t be a hard choice of morality, it is the only choice.

‘Marshall’ Review

By Brandon Caldwell, Feature Writer feel like the 1940s, where although war is being waged overseas, there’s a building war and understated racism that sticks out rather clear as day. Similar to last year’s successful “Hidden Figures,” Hudlin’s “Marshall” is not shy about displaying the racial overtones of the period front and center.

The judge, played by a more than game James Cromwell is still ambivalent to Marshall’s mere presence in the courtroom and would instead stage a pissing contest with Marshall than hear him argue a case he’s more than qualified to debate. The jury?

All white. The entire premise feels like a looming set up for a gut punch.

But to drive the effect of the era home, Hudlin finds warmth in some areas and bleakness in others. There are visions of Harlem where Langston Hughes (Jussie Smollett) and Zora Neal Hurston (Rozanda “Chili” Thomas) discuss matters of the day just to show off their mere existence.

Boseman’s Marshall walks around with the confidence of a superhero and also the pains of a man who rarely wears his actual life out in public.

He has his faults that are Denzelian to

Chadwick Boseman a degree, prideful and nuanced yet sometimes blinded by his ambition. Even at the end, before the film bookends itself neatly, there are reminders of today. Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, the parents of Trayvon Martin, appear as the parents of a Mississippi boy on trial for the murder of a white police officer.

In character, they’re repeating the anguish of their real lives with what occurred with their son five years ago. It’s merely a stickler for how much things haven’t changed.

Heartbreaker: Houston Texans Lose Whitney Mercilus and J.J. Watt to Injuries in Loss to Kansas City Chiefs

merican poet Maya Angelou once wrote, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”

That quote held true as the Houston Texans played through some very rough times facing the only undefeated team in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs. In front of a home crowd of 71,835, in a nationally televised game, the Texans have a heartbreaking loss of 42-34 to the Chiefs.

Houston endured major blows on the defensive side of the ball when outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus suffered a chest injury in the first quarter of the game. Mercilus is one of the smartest linebackers in the game. His awareness on the defensive side of the ball helps the entire Texans unit.

With the early diagnosis of a pectoral tear, he is done for the season. To make matters worse the Texans also lost the “Heartbeat

of the City” when defensive end J.J. Watt went down with a season-ending leg injury. Watt has been diagnosed with a tibial plateau fracture.

“Just coming off the field and hearing a little bit about it I don’t have a ton of information on it,” head coach Bill O’ Brien said when asked about his star defensive end.

“I feel terrible for the guy but with that being said just knowing him and the type of guy he is. He is an amazing human being and he will work extremely hard to be back to play for this football team.”

Kansas City showed why they are the hottest team in football. With quarterback Alex Smith throwing for 324 yards and three touchdowns and rookie Kareem Hunt rushing for 107 yards, the Chiefs left no doubt who was the dominant team on the field. “I think we are executing more consistently. I think we have had flashes in years past, we have a confidence about us

Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had another strong performance with a team-high three touchdowns, which tied a single game and career high for him.

The Texans will look to rebound as they face a winless Cleveland Browns team who has been showing improvement each week.

Line 9-inch square cake pan with parchment paper, bringing up over sides. Combine graham cracker crumbs and butter, and stir until well combined. Press crumb mixture evenly into bottom of cake pan.

Set aside.

In bowl of stand mixer, beat cream cheese, 1 cup powdered sugar, lemon juice and lemon zest until smooth. In separate bowl, whip heavy whipping cream until it starts to thicken.

Add remaining powdered sugar and continue to whip until stiff peaks form. Gently fold half the whipped cream into cheesecake mixture and place remainder in refrigerator to use later. Spread cheesecake mixture evenly in cake pan.

Refrigerate cheesecake at least 4 hours, or until firm.

Use parchment paper on sides to lift bars out of pan then cut into squares. Use remaining whipped cream to top cheesecake bars then add fresh berries, as desired. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

The free day was ďŹ lled with hands-on activities in the world of STEM. Students from elementary to high school had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with career experts.

Early on in the game Whitney Mercilus suffered a chest injury followed by J.J. Watt who injured his knee. And just like the Texans’ defense was down by two for the season. Even though this was a big blow to the team, Coach Bill O’Brien says the Texans will keep pushing with strong players like Jadeveon Clowney and Christian Covington. The Houston Texans next game is against the Cleveland Browns this Sunday.
