hen Colin Kaepernick first took a knee during the national anthem last year, he acted alone, a silent protest against a society that repeatedly fails to hold police accountable for the killing of unarmed African-Americans. Kaepernick was condemned and now essentially has been banned from the NFL, with the owners surely colluding to insure that a quarterback of immense talent would not find a place among the dozens of teams desperately in need of one.

whether they agreed with those views or not. They stood together to show that they are citizens, not chattel. They are skilled athletes practicing their profession, not chained slave gladiators forced to entertain the mob.

Kaepernick is alone no longer. After Donald Trump’s ugly outbursts and tweets -- he called Kaepernick and other protestors a “son of a b----,” urged the NFL owners to kick out any player with the courage to protest and, bizarrely, condemned rule changes designed to provide some protection against concussions -- players and even owners across the NFL reacted.

They are clearly prepared, as they did with Kaepernick, to punish independence.

Yet dozens of athletes responded to Trump’s jibes by joining the protest, and their teammates stood arm-in-arm defending their right to do so. Trump thinks the NFL is a plantation. The players showed the real patriotism that the flag truly represents.

Every athlete knows that expressing controversial views publicly is a harsh risk.

Their careers are short; their contracts are not guaranteed. The owners are billionaires, dependent on public subsidy, fearful of any controversy.

Teams linked arms on the sidelines during the anthem, some kneeling and others not, unified in protest of Trump’s divisive rants and tweets. The Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans and all but one of the Pittsburgh Steelers chose to stay in their locker rooms when the anthem was played.

They stood together to defend the right of their teammates to express themselves,

failing despite lies and bribes. Hurricanes and wildfires are mocking his inane denial of climate change. His embrace of the “fine people” in the neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, Va., alarmed decent people across the country. After eight months in office, he has the lowest approval ratings of any president since polls were invented.

Black athletes -- many of them millionaires -- make a perfect foil. How dare they protest when they have been “given” so much? Much of Trump’s base already thinks minorities enjoy special privileges. Going after black athletes simply stokes their anger and resentment, while masking Trump’s myriad failures and betrayals.

For Trump, the assault on protesting black athletes -- he also tweeted his withdrawal of an invitation to Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors to visit the White House after Curry expressed reservations about the president -- is a classic diversion.

Kaepernick took his knee to protest the criminal police killing of African-Americans. This year to date, the Washington Post reports that 10 unarmed African-Americans, and 32 unarmed people in total, have been fatally shot by the police in the U.S. St. Louis has been shaken by days of protests after the acquittal of a police officer who shot an 24-year-old African-American after a car chase.

He has terrified the country with his blustery, schoolyard insults to a North Korean leader armed with nuclear weapons. His efforts to dismember basic health care are

Police chiefs rebuked him when he urged police to feel free to rough up suspects. His Department of Justice has told prosecutors

to seek maximum sentences, adding to mass incarceration that shames this nation. His DOJ has also scorned the consent agreements that Obama’s Justice Department forged to reform racially biased police departments. Kaepernick and the players taking a knee have ever more reasons to do so.

The stern visage of Dr. Martin Luther King now graces the national mall. America has come a long way since he left us. We are a more diverse nation. Segregation is no more.

We still need leaders and citizens who will work to bring us together, to reform biased institutional practices, to rededicate ourselves to fulfilling Dr. King’s dream.

Sadly, in the White House, this president has chosen, purposefully and with malice, to drive us apart to serve his own political ends. The protests of the NFL players this weekend show that we are a better nation than that.

ouncil Member Dwight Boykins believes everyone deserves a second chance. He is living what he says by hosting the annual 2nd Chance Job Fair. Now in its third year, the 2nd Chance Job Fair provides opportunities for individuals who are unemployed, underemployed, have dropped out of high school, and those who have made mistakes in the past, including non-violent ex-felons. The initiative assists those who are in need of a second chance by addressing the City of Houston workforce shortage and will empower members of our community by improving their quality of life and providing financial stability. This year’s fair had 4,000 participants and over 60 vendors post Hurricane Harvey. There were many people who were hired on the spot and those who were scheduled for interviews.

Abbott Refuses to Tap Rainy Day Fund To Help Houston Pay Cost of Harvey [HoustonPublicMedia.Org]

ouston won’t get help from the state’s Rainy Day Fund to recover from Harvey. Governor Greg Abbott shot down a request by Mayor Sylvester Turner to tap the state’s $10 billion emergency reserve. Mayor Turner wrote the governor that Houston has drawn on $20 million from its reserves to pay for damages from Harvey. But even with federal help, the city is still facing a bill of at least $50 million. Turner said without state aid, the city may need to raise property taxes to make up the difference. Houston has already held the first of three public hearings on Turner’s proposed property tax hike. The city council is scheduled to vote on the proposal next month.

Houston’s Small Businesses Rebounded Quickly After Harvey [HoustonPublicMedia.org]

H

arvey’s impact can be felt across Greater Houston – it flooded thousands of homes. But it also damaged and destroyed businesses, and among the hardest hit were small businesses, which make up the vast majority of Houston companies. Small business software company Womply looked at the average revenue of 5,800 Houston businesses before the storm and how it was affected during Harvey and in the 10 days after. Womply told Houston Public Media they saw a dramatic initial decrease in average revenue and rebounded fairly quickly. Revenue plummeted across industries but most returned to 80 to 100 percent of typical daily revenue within a week.

Texas Woman Dies of Flesh-eating Bacteria Caused by Hurricane Harvey [ABCNews.go.com] 77-year-old Houston woman died earlier this month from a flesh-eating bacteria, which she contracted after falling into Harvey floodwaters in her home, authorities said. Nancy Reed, of the Kingwood area of northeast Houston, died on Sept. 15 of flood-related necrotizing fasciitis, more commonly referred to as flesh-eating bacteria, after she fell into contaminated flood water in her home, the Harris County medical examiner’s office ruled. The disease, which spreads rapidly through muscle tissue, is typically only seen in people with weak immune systems, according to the Harris County Public Health office.

Mexican Woman Admits Illegally Selling Prescription Drugs in Houston [Ice.gov]

Mexican woman was convicted Friday after pleading guilty to conspiring to smuggle prescription drugs into the United States, and receiving and delivering misbranded drugs with the intent to defraud. This guilty plea was announced

by Acting U.S. Attorney Abe Martinez, Southern District of Texas. This investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigations, and the Houston Police Department’s Major Offenders Division.

Carolina Aguilar Rodriguez, 47 admitted she purchased prescription drugs from individuals who were not licensed wholesale distributors, and knowing they had covertly and illegally entered the United States from El Salvador and Mexico.

Texas Grants First Drilling Permit to Mexican Oil Company [oilandgas360.com]

or the first time ever, Texas authorities have issued a drilling permit to a Mexican company for gas and oil extraction in the state. The Texas Railroad Commission, the agency that regulates the energy industry in the state, authorized Petrobal Omega 1 LLC to drill a 5,000-foot (2,524-meter) deep vertical well in the Barnett Shale basin located in Northern Texas.

Drilling work will take place in Jack County, northwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. Petrobal Omega 1 LLC was registered last February at the Texas Secretary of State as a subsidiary of Mexico City-based PetroBAL, a company founded in 2015 by mining mogul Alberto Bailleres Gonzalez, president of Grupo Bal, a conglomerate that owns the world’s largest silver producer.

In North Texas the largest growth was seen in McKinney, Richardson and Dallas. Houston is number one, Dallas is now the 17th most popular final destination in the nation and Fort Worth at 24th.

National Museum of African American History Honored with Forever Stamp [GoodBlackNews.org]

24, 2016, the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) became the 19th Smithsonian museum and the only national museum devoted exclusively to African American life, art, history and culture. The museum’s collections, which include art, artifacts, photographs, films, documents, data, books, manuscripts and audio recordings, represent all regions of the United States and acknowledge the cultural links of African Americans to the black experience around the world as well. The stamp art is based on a photograph of the museum showing a view of the northwest corner of the building. Text in the upper-left corner of the stamp reads “National Museum of African American History and Culture.”

Girl Scouts Releases Spanish Version of Its Anthem for Hispanic Heritage Month [LatinBusinessToday.com]

GIRL--Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) released “Me Verás Brillar,” a Spanish version of its “Watch Me Shine” anthem, which the organization released last year. The new song is distributed in conjunction with National Hispanic Heritage Month and emphasizes the importance of girls taking the lead in their communities. The original anthem was translated to Spanish by well-known producer José Luis Pagán (Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez) and sung by recording artist Alyssa Micaela. The English version of the song written by two-time Grammy winner Liz Rose (Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Little Big Town) and Emily Shackelton (Reba McEntire, David Cook, Cassadee Pope), has gone global since its release.

She’s the woman featured in the movie “Hidden Figures” for her inspiring work at NASA Langley. People knew the mathematician as a “human computer” who calculated America’s first space flights in the 1960s. The 99-year-old worked for NASA at a time when it was extremely difficult for African-Americans — especially women — to get jobs in the science field. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. The Katherine G. Johnson Computational Research Facility (CRF) is a $23 million, 37,000-square-foot energy efficient structure that consolidates five Langley data centers and more than 30 server rooms.

Donald Trump’s Controversial Border Wall is Going Up [Latina.com]

resident Donald Trump’s most controversial and outrageous key pledge to build a wall along the border of Mexico is actually well on its way to becoming a reality. The federal government said Tuesday that contractors began building eight prototypes of Trump’s proposed border wall along Mexico. The construction, which has already been setback three months due to legal issues and protests by potential contractors who didn’t win contracts, has now initiated. Eight prototypes are being built on the construction site that is close to the existing high-security fence, which marks the border through San Diego and extends along the east. Each prototype is said to be thirty feet high and thirty feet wide. Customs and Border Protection expect the building process to last thirty days. The bidding documents say four of the prototypes are to built of solid concrete and four of ‘other materials.’

“Before and during the early days of his football coaching career, he was 4-time All Star infielder in the Negro Baseball League from 1934-1949, I am very proud of his legacy” Adrian said.

After high school, Adrian attended the University of Houston where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities. He remains tied to the University today through his work as a public finance attorney, handling the school’s bond work and furthering its capital projects–including renovation of the existing Hofheinz Pavilion into the new Fertitta Center.

Following graduation, Adrian moved to London and worked at the global law firm, Skadden Arps. It was during his time there that he decided to pursue a career in law.

ouston Style sat down with legal eagle Adrian Patterson to learn more about his path from humble beginnings to becoming Houston’s go-to attorney for public finance at Andrews Kurth Kenyon LLP. And there is no doubt he will be an integral part of Houston’s future for decades to come.

“I really became interested in public finance and working with cities and universities to build streets and libraries and other projects for the public good,” Adrian said. In addition to the legal work he has been instrumental in at his alma mater, he is also a city council appointee to the Houston Municipal Employees Pension System, providing advice and insight into that important system. And yet another example of his commitment to building our community is serving as one of the outside counsel to Houston METRO. “I remember as a child we would often take the bus out of necessity to get around Houston, many of my family and friends did as well. So it is extremely rewarding to now work with METRO and be a part of their efforts to expand their service and reach even more people in our community.”

SPORTS Moral Victory:

Houston Texans vs. Tennessee Titans

A

s a child playing competitive sports, my coaches would tell us before each game that there was no such thing as a moral victory. You either win or lose. Moral victories don’t go down in the record books, they preached. So, every game, my teammates and I would never focus on what we did correctly.

Never would we publicly talk about a great catch one of us had if we lost the game.

Even when one of our players made a great tackle or even an interception, but the team lost the game. We would remain silent.

Well after watching the Houston Texans vs. New England Patriots my coaches owe me an apology; a very big one, too. The kind of apology that makes you take out a full-page ad in a newspaper. Houston came away from that game with a moral victory and a future leader.

The Texans lost a heartbreaker to the reigning Super Bowl champions NE Patriots last week. Future Hall of Famer and QB, who seems to get better as he gets older, Tom Brady, 40, drove 85 yards and connected with WR Brandin Cooks for the game-winning 25-yard touchdown pass to

win the game by a score of 36-33; another notch in Brady’s clutch performer belt. I am of the belief that Brady’s bust is already in Canton (Home of the NFL Hall of Fame) in a pressurized glass case.

What did not go unnoticed was the maturity and leadership shown by Houston Texans first-round pick QB Deshaun Watson. He completed 22-33 passes for 301 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in defeat.

Starting in only his second NFL professional game, he served notice to the Patriots that they may see him again in the playoffs. His performance led New England CB Malcom Butler to call him an up and coming Cam Newton. “He’s a handful. He was running around, people were diving at him and missing. That’s a great guy,” said Butler.

Houston (1-2) will need everything from that moral victory as one of the hottest teams in the NFL comes to town. The Texans will square off against the AFC South Divisional leaders, Tennessee Titans (2-1), on Sunday.

Houston is already down one game in the division after an opening season loss to division foe Jacksonville Jaguars. So, they cannot afford to lose another divisional

EAT WITH STYLE Fat Bao Puts the Flavor in Asian Fusion

e’ve all had those days’ lunch or dinner when we are ready to eat, but we craved something that is out of our comfort zone when it comes to food. At Fat Bao’s, where one can choose from something called Bulgogi Bao, a Pork Belly Bao, Crab, or Chicken Bao, in addition to Fat Cauli, Fat Fries, or Curry Fat Fries, then you have probably embarked on one of the most unique tasting experiences in the Greater Houston area.

This Asian Fusion establishment currently has two locations: 3419 Kirby Drive in Houston, and 3355 Hwy. 6 in Sugar Land, Texas, they are open for lunch through dinner and have taken their flavors to a whole new level of deliciousness.

We didn’t get the opportunity to interview any of the personnel at Fat Bao’s but, according to their website, “back in the summer of 2012, two high school friends teamed up to answer the question, “what is the tastiest ingredient we can stuff inside these steamed buns?” They worked day and night searching for the perfect combination.

How far outside the box could they go? After several long months of trial and error, Fat Bao Kirby opened its doors in December 2012. Ten months later in October 2013, Fat Bao Sugar Land joined the party.

My first introduction to this particular Asian Fusion eatery was via Uber Eats. I was famished after a long day of work and could not decide what to eat, but I knew that I didn’t want to cook. Once I opened the app and read some of the menu offerings, my curiosity as well as my growling stomach got the best of me and soon to my front door appeared two Bulgoi Baos, along with some Fat Fries, and a side salad.

The Bulgogi is marinated beef rib eye, kimchi, and green onions. It is served in a bun that looks like a fluffy white small tortilla, but it is very light. The Fat Fries contain the Bulgogi beef, onions and, of course, thinly sliced potato fries. The side salad is a combination of mixed greens, cucumbers, tomatoes and comes with mandarin vinaigrette. The first bite of the Bulgogi had my eyes rolling to the top of my head, and the choice of sauces ranged from a mild semisweet sauce to the tangy heat of the sriracha.

Congressman Green spoke of how he has worked with Harris and Fort Bend counties since the storm to help residents deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
