COMMENTARY Facing the Assault On Civil Rights

T

is decimating staffing of its Office of Civil Rights. The Department of Housing and Urban Development has revoked guidance on a rule that allows transgender people to stay in sex-segregated shelters matching their gender identity.

he Trump administration has launched an unprecedented rollback of civil rights and voting rights.

Those who care about building a more perfect union face harsh headwinds. We’ve gone from an administration seeking to fulfill these rights to one seeking to repeal these rights.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, formerly a senator representing Alabama, has led the rollback. The DOJ has reversed its opposition to a Texas discriminatory voter ID law. Sessions has announced that he would review consent decrees that the Obama Justice Department made to reform police departments. Sessions has ordered U.S. prosecutors to seek the maximum sentences, while moving to revive private prisons. The administration is gearing up for a national assault on voting rights, pushing measures that will make voting more difficult.

Instead of a reconstruction, we are faced with a retrenchment, an effort to radically reverse the gains that have been made by women, people of color and the LGBTQ community. Instead of understanding that expanding civil rights is a vital therapy to heal this nation, the Trump administration views it as a threat to its rule.

The rollback is government wide. The Labor Department has announced plans to disband the division that polices discrimination among federal contractors as a “cost cutting measure.” The Environmental Protection Agency plans to eliminate the environmental justice program that focuses on the environmental threats to minority communities. The Education Department

Women, people of color, the poor and the LGBTQ are the targets and the direct victims of this assault. But the entire country will suffer, as basic rights are denied, prisons are expanded, and hopes and dreams are stuffed out.

In Chicago this week, leaders from across the country will gather for the annual Rainbow Push National Summit. We will use this time to map out our response to this assault on all that we have fought for.

Now is the time for citizens of conscience to join together to defend and expand basic civil rights.

As the Department of Justice retreats from the enforcement of civil rights, we will expand the pressure on corporations and governments to adhere to equal employment opportunity from the boardroom to the basement, from their contracts to philanthropy.

We will work to defend voting rights, building the movement to add the federal right to vote to the U.S. Constitution. As some move to constrict voting, we will move to expand it. Illinois is about to become the ninth state to pass automatic voter registration, with the potential addition of an estimated 1 million voters to the voting rolls. We will push to pass automatic voter registration in states across the union. If successful, we will add a stunning 51 million new voters to the rolls.

Dr. Martin Luther King taught us that “human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. ... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering and struggle -- the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.”

We will demand that President Trump fulfill his promise to invest $1 trillion in rebuilding America, helping to generate real jobs doing vital things that need to be done. We will defend sanctuary cities

Now, in this headwind of injustice, it is time for the tribunes of justice to move forward. Now is the time for citizens of conscience to come to the aid of their country.

Lovell’s Food for Thought - One’s Legacy - Where Are They Now?

t is often said that the spirit of an individual lives as long as they live in the memories of those they have impacted.

Howard Bern is one whose spirit burns brightly in my soul. For he often said, “one’s legacy to science is not the work that you do, but the people you leave behind.” This is a phrase you have heard me say and written about numerous times, and will continue to hear me say and include in my writing so long as I am on this earth. It is almost my hope that this saying will be embedded in the souls of ones I have impacted so long as there is work to be done.

It is amazing how one picture keeps popping up over the years. One that links all of your efforts and centers around a phrase that my mentor Howard Bern use to repeat over and over again - “one’s legacy to science is not the work that you do, but the people you leave behind.”

It was with this in mind when the Biennial Symposium on Minorities & Cancer was launched in 1987 in Houston, Texas with a component focused having poster presentations by underrepresented trainees on research related to health inequities, with

somewhat of a focus on cancer. I said somewhat, because of the fact that there were very few minorities doing cancer or health equity research at that time, let along minority students. In 1987, it was still a novel idea to have students, especially high school and college students, present their work during a major meeting as well as to interact with some of the leaders in the field.

In closing, let me include a recent email I received from a 15th Annual Disparity in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice Workshop attendee. I mentioned the wealth of information I received during my time in Houston to my

Commissioner today, and he invited me to give a presentation to our department leadership. I look forward to sharing some of what I learned and hope it will inspire others as well. I was also able to connect with a student at the conference who attends school in South Carolina but lives in Lexington. We plan to meet for dinner this week.

Although saying “thank you” is not enough, I extend my sincerest thanks and gratitude for this wonderful opportunity.

Houston Community College Trustee Convicted of Bribery [CommunityImpact.com]

trustee of the Houston Community College System board has been convicted of bribery related to his tenure on the board. Chris Oliver will be sentenced Aug. 28 for bribery of a public official concerning programs receiving federal funds, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas Abe Martinez’s office announced Monday once the case was unsealed. Oliver was initially charged in March and plead guilty May 15 in U.S. District Court. According to Martinez’s office, Oliver admitted to accepting bribes “in exchange for the promise of official actions related to his duties as a member of the HCC board of trustees.” Oliver was first elected to the board in 1995 and previously held the position of board chairman.

Texas Native Killed in Greece [CNN/StyleMagazine.com Newswire]

A

n American tourist was beaten to death by a group of 10 men while visiting a Greek island in the Mediterranean, state media reported. Bakari Henderson, 22, was at a bar in the Greek island of Zakynthos with his friends Friday when a man approached him and they began fighting, according to state news agency ANAMPA. Eight people have been arrested in the fight that left Henderson unconscious.

Henderson died of his injuries. He was a recent graduate from the University of Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in business finance and entrepreneurship, according to his LinkedIn profile. He was in Greece working on a photo shoot to launch a new clothing line when the incident took place, his family told CNN affiliate KXAN.

Rockets Sign James Harden to Four-Year Contract Extension [NBA.com/Rockets]

ouston Rockets Owner Leslie Alexander announced today that the team has signed guard James Harden to a four-year contract extension, which will run through the 2022-23 season. The Rockets have made the playoffs in all five of Harden’s seasons with the team, while posting a winning percentage of .612. He has been named First Team All NBA in three of the past four seasons and finished second in voting for the Most Valuable Player award in both 2014-15 and 2016-17. This past season, Harden set career-highs in scoring, rebounding, and assists while helping Houston to the league’s thirdbest record at 55-27. He joined Oscar Robertson as the only players to have averaged at least 29.0 points, 11.0 assists and 8.0 rebounds in a single season. Request for Harris County to Join SB4 Lawsuit Declined by Court [StyleMagazine.com Newswire]

recinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis on Tuesday asked Harris County to join other Texas counties and cities in a lawsuit challenging Senate Bill 4, the “show-me-your-papers” legislation, but the other Commissioners declined to get involved in the legal challenge. During the regular Commissioners Court meeting, Commissioner Ellis made a motion asking Harris County to join the lawsuit, but there was no second to it, meaning no vote was taken on the agenda item. The lack of action on the request means Harris County will not join the lawsuit challenging SB4.

Last month, Houston City Council voted to join the consolidated lawsuit challenging the law, which goes into effect September 1.

harles Butt, the chairman and CEO of H-E-B and one of Texas’ most prominent philanthropists, made another splash Monday, pledging $50 million to a program that will train public school teachers. The donation comes in the form of a new scholarship program, Raising Texas Teachers, which will be run by the Butt-founded Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation. Ten schools, including the University of Texas at Austin and the University of North Texas at Dallas, will receive funding this year for student scholarships. Eventually, the program will give 500 college students $8,000 per year to help them pursue teaching certifications.

he Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has awarded The Houston Launch Pad a $297,194 Self-Sufficiency Fund training grant. The Houston Launch Pad partnered with Almeda-Genoa Construction, Williams Brothers Construction and ISI Infrastructure Services to help 150 individuals transition into the workforce from dependency on public assistance. The grant will help provide job training in carpentry, concrete finishing, construction and heavy equipment operator occupations. SNL ‘The Ladies Man’ Tim Meadows Brings Comedy Show to Houston

The Saturday Night Live legend drew in a full crowd on his opening night. In his set, Meadows covered a wide range of topics including poking fun at President Donald Trump as well as former President Barack Obama. He even made fun at something Houstonians don’t often laugh at, the Houston heat. Meadows tackled race, the transgender community, life after divorce, and dating after 40. At the end of his set, he gave the audience a surprise visit of a familiar character when he asked for girl volunteer to come on stage with her cell phone. Meadows rattled off the first half of his phone number to the audience then whispered the rest of the number in the girl’s ear.

Meadows has been performing standup comedy and acting for over twenty years.

He held the record for the longest-running cast member on Saturday Night Live, a record 10 seasons, until he was beat by Darrell Hammond in 2005. In 2000, Meadows starred in the feature film, The Ladies’ Man, inspired by his Saturday Night Live character. . Meadows has appeared in films such as Coneheads, Mean Girls, Grown Ups, The Benchwarmers, and more. Currently, he has a recurring role on network TV shows the Son of Zorn and The Goldbergs. If people looked at you, wasn’t that good? You wanted to be seen, watched, adored by those you saw as desirable. But what, exactly, did you want people to notice? Was it your hair, your body or, as in “Surpassing Certainty” by Janet Mock, was the whole you on display?

At a very young age, Mock knew she was a girl in a boy’s body. Her mother looked the other way while Mock wore feminine clothing and grew out her hair, and she ignored when Mock started taking female hormones as an adolescent.

After saving every penny, Mock flew to Bangkok to finalize her transition at eighteen; months later, she realized that nobody saw her as anything but a pretty black woman.

Her Thursday-through-Saturday schedule was meant for women over 21; that was the legal age for dancing as a stripper in a Waikiki clubs, but the proprietress of the club jokingly offered to “give” Mock two of her own birthdays, and that was that: Mock was a dancer, albeit a self-conscious one. Houston Native Lands Role in Tracy Morgan’s The Last O.G.

uring the wee hours of the morning on June 7, 2014, Tracy Morgan almost lost his life after a Walmart trucker collided with his limo. But Godwas not ready for Morgan just yet. After eight days in a coma, many shattered and crack bones, severe brain injury, and a long recovery Morgan made his way back to life and back to the career he loves, comedy. Now he is set to star in his first major television role since that tragic accident and a Houstonian will be right along with him on set.

From the minds of Jordan Peele and John Carcieri, “The Last O.G.” is show that has been in the works for a while. It hinged on the recovery of its star, Tracy Morgan. With these three mentioned names, it is already a given that the show will be a hit and funny.

During one of Barajas’ scenes with Morgan the camera were turned so the focus would be on him instead of Morgan. Before the scene was shot, Morgan turns to Barajas to say, “Alright baby, it’s your time to shine.” A nervous Barajas was in awe of Morgan’s supportive words. “You know to have someone of that caliber to say that is so encouraging and I really, really appreciated that.”

The act spoke to the character of Morgan and is a testament to who he really is as a man.

Coming to TBS later this year, the show follows the life of Tray (Tracy Morgan), an ex-con released from prison after serving 15 years. Now a free man Tray finds it hard to adapt to life on the outside with all the world’s advancements since he has been locked up. He tries to reconnect with his old girlfriend (Tiffany Haddish) but she has moved on to start a family with her white husband and Tray’s twins. Not knowing how to cope or having anyone to help him, Tray turns to his old

Don’t box Barajas into just being an actor and a dancer because he is much more than that. After all, he is a graduate of the Prairie View A&M University, the producer of productive people.

Another one of his many talents is being a teacher of both dance and yoga. He is even a certified power vinyasa yoga instructor and Box and Flow instructor. These gifts have allowed him to teach all over the U.S. and outside its borders. Some of his most meaningful work has been using yoga to help those who are mentally ill. Like a locomotive running full steam, Barajas is never at a lost for energy so he is constantly pushing himself. This translates to him always working.

sical “Ghost.” Not just behind the scene, Barajas steps on stage to play Willie Lopez as well in the musical. In addition, he will be the new male face of the BrandBrief app. Barajas describes the app as changing the way advertising is used through social media. “It is a neat concept,” said Barajas. “It incorporates everyday living with certain products.”

Just listening to all the things Barajas is involved in as he crisscrosses the globe to get it all done one wonders when he sleeps. Resting is not his goal in life, however, living it to the fullest is. He lives by one mantra, a quote by Thich Nhat Hanh, “Because you are alive…everything is possible.”

He believes a person’s potential could be lost if they don’t do enough to be alive so he is going to do everything in his power to unlock his potential and live it up!

aving power at the tip of your fingertips gives off an adrenaline rush that excites the heart, curls the toes, and makes hair stand on its end.

After a week in the 2017 Lexus RC 350 F Sport, I felt this type of power. And you can too for a starting price of $47,115.

From the name of the vehicle, it is easy to guess that it has a need for speed. With a 3.5-liter V6 engine under its hood, the RC 350 F Sport goes from 0 to 60 in 5.8 seconds (RWD) and 6.0 seconds (AWD).

It produces a horsepower of 350, which can be increased with the dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence. Further momentum can be gained when driving in the sports mode. Two other driving modes, eco for better fuel efficiency and normal for optimal balance of fuel efficiency and performance, are available.

Driving is made more fun and interesting with paddle shifters on the steering wheel for quick shift changes.

With speed like this, safety is of the up most concern. The RC 350 F Sport is loaded with features to keep all passengers safe and sound. Standing out the most are the LED headlamps and daytime running lights. Having catlike styling, they are designed to target and make clearer what is in front of the driver as well as make the vehicle more visible to others. RC 350 F Sport thinks for the driver with safety features that act as prevention for accidents.

The pre-collision system brakes automatically if it thinks the vehicle will hit another vehicle in front of it. Features that are always popular to me are the backup camera and the blind spot monitoring.

Slowly becoming another one of my favs is the intuitive parking assist that helps to make me parallel park like a pro. Not that Houstonians will ever need this, but there is even a feature to prevent skids on an icy road.

Resting its frame on 18” aluminum wheels all-season tires, the vehicle has striking lines and sharp curves that cause not just a double-take, but a triple-take. During my test drive week, I constantly caught people staring at the car or stopping me to say things like, “Nice wheels.” I just smiled and said, “I know, right.” Bold branding of the Lexus logo is center focus on the distinguished grille combined with chrome accents that ties the entire look of the sports coupe together. My review vehicle was in the color ultimate white but I suggest the silver metallic.

Don’t think for a second that because the RC 350 F Sport is a racecar that it is not luxurious. Lexus and luxury just go together automatically. Starting with the Lexus Enform App Suite, housing every apps to make life easier to do everything from making restaurant reservations to streaming live radio. One can even download the app on a smartphone to start the vehicle’s engine. The driver’s instrumental panel is impressive with a digital tachometer, G-Force and turbo –boost displays that are bold and highly visible.

Lexus RC 350 F-Sport Houstonians will get a lot of use out of the ventilated seats but not so much from the heated seats and steering wheel. Another fun feature is the remote touchpad that controls the color multi-informational display. Always entertaining is the Mark Levinson premium surround sound audio system with 17 speakers included in the F Sports Package.

What makes the Astros such a fierce team is their offense. If you have read any of my past articles, you know I frequently comment on how they are never completely out of any game. They have held a lead in 77 out of the 89 regular season games played What’s more impressive is that the Astros thus far. Houston’s offense leads the Major leader is tearing the cover off the baseball Leagues in runs (527), hits (898), doubles on the road as well by batting (.414), which (197), homers (148), batting average (.289), by the way; yep you guessed it, leads the

Majors. Not to be out done in this hitting that’s to be expected when you have such a barrage is Carlos Correa. The phenomenal talented team like the Astros. Three of their SS has reached base safely in 25 games and pitchers (Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers ranks number one in the AL at his position in Jr, and Chris Devenski) were selected to the AL All-Star team. That is a grand total of six runs, home runs, RBI’s, and walks.

Houston looks to improve in the area of pitching in the second half of the season, although they have set a Major League record by recording (902) strikeouts before the All-Star break. Some late inning hiccups has caused them to drop a couple of games, but

Astros fans buckle up! Because if the second half of the season resembles any parts of the first we are in for the ride of our sports lives that hopefully won’t end until a chilly night in October.

EAT Two WITH STYLE Texan Breweries Take Garland Tap-by-Tap

I

f you’re a lover of all things craft beer, you were raised on good Texas Barbecue, and you enjoy lively crowds, daily, then you are probably running one of the most successful breweries in North Texas.

Intrinsic Brewing, located at 509 West State Street in Garland, Texas, is wowing the crowds with their distinct flavors of beer and their smokehouse barbecue.

Also know for their uncommon flavors, Intrinsic is making a name for themselves with their signature brews such as: Hibiscus Wit, Yoloquat, Pineapple Cucumber Saison and their series called Froot Tart.

Additionally, Intrinsic is making all kinds of waves with their food; they smoke their own meats, according to their website: intrinsicbrewing.com, “all meats smoked low & slow, in small batches just like our craft beer, and once we are out, we are out until tomorrow.”

We spoke briefly to co-owner Cary Hodson, who grew up in Texas, he is passionate about his chosen field of work and it shows in the quality of their menu. Once a month Intrinsic does flight food pairings, which has been quite successful and a big hit with the crowds according to Hodson. What are customers saying about Intrinsic? “Nice atmosphere, awesome BBQ & drinks. Even if you don’t drink beer, like myself, they have a cider on tap, wines from a bottle & Sangria on tap. The Sangria is the best I have ever

had! “ Another customer wrote, “from top notch beers to the best BBQ I have ever had in a place that had the coolest atmosphere inside and outside.”

Also going strong in Garland is Lakewood Brewery, which was founded in 2011

by Belgian born, Texas raised, SMU Graduate Wim Bens. According to his bio, “we strive to create the highest quality beers by developing new and exciting styles while staying true to the art and precision of craft brewing. We handcraft small batch beers that are full of unique, exciting flavors and reflect the timelessness, creativity, and energetic fun that makes Lakewood less of a place and more of a feeling.”

Las Terrazas Resort in Belize; The Resort That Has Everything

ocated 3.5 miles north of San Pedro, tucked away in the small country of Belize is a secret treasure called the Las Terrazas Resort. With its white sand beaches that go on for miles and tall palm trees swaying in the wind, it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited on earth and one of the most tranquil. Hard to believe it is just two and a half hours away from the states. In order to get to Las Terrazas, I had to land at the main airport in Belize City, take another plane to a small island and board a boat to get to my final destination of paradise.

Those small trips set the stage for a great escape that started with me when I stepped onto the boardwalk for Las Terrazas. Hospitality was laid on thick from the moment of my arrival to my departure.

And it’s wasn’t just I received special treatment as a member of the media but it is the attention given to every guest. An employee personally welcomes everyone to the resort. Upon my arrival, the General Manager Julian Burton with a cocktail

featuring the island’s world class rum in tow greeted me.

Burton was the perfect example of what the employees represent that work at Las Terrazas Resort. He was engaging, plugged into everything that was taking place at Las Terrazas and loved the Resort.

Before immersing myself in activity, Burton allowed me to get settled in my suite for the weekend. I don’t think I know the words to adequately describe how amazing my room was. My eyes darted back and forth as I viewed the big and roomy living room with mahogany furniture, fully functioning kitchen with cookware, two extravagant bathrooms, master and guest room and a view overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It was heavenly.

Night came quickly on my first day in Belize, which meant dinner was close to follow. I was in for a treat for my first meal at Las Terrazas. It was a buffet and rum tasting. The food was native to Belize with a featured mix between Creole dishes and Spanish dishes. It was scrumptious.

The food had my taste buds dancing and I couldn’t wait to see what breakfast would be the next morning.

I was up and at ‘em the next day to get a jumpstart on breakfast. I dined at the signature restaurant at the resort, O Restaurant and Bar. While my companion slept, I took a dip in the pool to eat poolside. I could have stayed all day but Belize is too pretty of a place to just sit in a pool all day no matter how nice it is.

The crew that took me on my snorkeling adventure dished out hospitality in a major way. The crew has the patience of Job and made every accommodation for passengers. Not being a fan of water, I tensed up. However, the crew eased my fears. I was so glad too because I was allowed to see beautiful coral reefs and an array of fish. For my first ever snorkeling trip, I felt so alive. The most terrifyingly beautiful thing about snorkeling were the sharks that swim right up to you. After spending all morning on the water, lunch was welcomed at the O Restaurant. Followed by a relaxing massage at the newly renovated Las Terrazas spa. Workers have magic hands as they relaxed every stress point in my body.

Feeling hungry, I made my way back to the boat for lunch with Chef Nolvin. Sitting poolside under a cabana, I devoured a three course meal. Sushi was the star of menu. My guest and I tried everything and

each bite was a delicious journey for my tongue.

The next day was one of relaxation. I spent the day watching one of the local workers trying to teach me how to climb a coconut tree and I took in a tour of San Pedro Island, which you can get to by golf cart or boat. Wanting to experience every advantage possible on the island I took a tour guide with me. I appreciated the fact that I didn’t have to convert my currency. English is the official language, which made communicating easy. You can also use American dollars and move around freely without feeling lost which can tend to happen in a lot of countries where you don’t speak the language.

A four course meal was served at my last dinner and one of my favs was being offered as the featured course. Since we were lucky that our trip was during wedding season, we dined on lobster bisque followed by fresh lobster tails and freshly caught fish. Finishing with a flaming dessert.

Overall I couldn’t have asked for a better experience than the one I received.

Educational Mission to Cuba Luncheon Photography by Vicky Pink he Houston International Trade Development Council, Inc. and Houston City Council Member Larry Green will lead a delegation of community leaders on an educational mission to Cuba. Havana, the largest city in the Caribbean, is one of the most culturally rich city center across the globe. Old Havana has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage as it is the seat of the Presidential Palace and to more than 900 historical and cultural landmarks.

The luncheon was a briefing of expectations before they departed. Some in attendance were Commissioner Rodney Ellis, Houston ISD Trustee Rhonda Skillern Jones, Houston City Councilman Dwight Boykins, and Judge Zinetta Burney.
