COMMENTARY The Lie About Voter Fraud Is The Real fraud A

fter President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey because of, as Trump admitted, the “Russian thing,” he struck a new blow to American democracy: He created a commission on “election integrity,” stemming from his fantastical claims of voter fraud in the 2016 election.

In reality, fraudulent voting is virtually nonexistent. The claims of widespread voter fraud are a fraud. Voter suppression, on the other hand, is a real, present and increasing threat to our democracy. And all signs are that Trump’s commission will add to that threat.

Trump named Vice President Mike Pence as chair, with Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a leading advocate of ballot-restricting legislation, as vice chair. Kobach has made a national spectacle of himself as a crazed pursuer of mythical voter fraud. In Kansas, Kobach has led Republican efforts to suppress the vote.

As Ari Berman of the Nation reports, Kobach claimed that “the illegal registration of alien voters has become pervasive,” although he could point to only five alleged

(CNN) -- Fact: US President Donald Trump hosted Russia’s Foreign Minister and the Kremlin’s ambassador to Washington in the Oval Office last week. Details beyond that statement are less clear. Trump’s presidency has been dogged by questions about Russia, but the latest controversy over his meeting with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak -- and what classified information he may or may not have been shared -- shifted gears Wednesday when Russian President Vladimir Putin offered US Congress a transcript of the meeting.

cases of noncitizens voting in Kansas during the previous 13 years. Kobach helped push through a law that required documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, such as a birth certificate, a passport or naturalization papers.

That requirement disproportionately impacts the elderly, the poor and the young, who often don’t have access to such papers.

Since the law went into effect in 2013, Berman reports, “one in seven Kansans who attempted to register have had their registrations held ‘in suspense’ by the state.”

To solve the non-problem of voter fraud, in 2015 Kansas gave Kobach the power to prosecute such cases. So far, he’s convicted nine people.

Only last month did he convict his first and only noncitizen for voting fraud. The Kansas City Star has noted the paltry results Kobach has to show for his unique prosecutorial powers, mocking him as the “Javert of voter fraud,” a reference to the obsessed police inspector of “Les Miserables.”

Now Kobach will be the driving force leading Trump’s commission. Its purpose,

The most significant factor was the suppression of the vote -- particularly the black vote -- in North Carolina, Philadelphia, Detroit and Milwaukee. As Berman has argued, federal court records show that “300,000 registered voters, 9 percent of the electorate, lacked strict forms of voter ID in Wisconsin.”

A recent study by Priorities USA, a Democratic PAC, estimated that Wisconsin’s harsh voter ID laws “reduced turnout by about 200,000 votes” -- disproportionately black votes. Trump won the state by 22,748 votes.

The 2016 election was the first in 50 years without the full protections of the Voting Rights Act. Fourteen states had new voting

restrictions in effect for the first time. Now Berman reports, 87 bills to restrict access to the ballot have been introduced in 29 states this year. Arkansas and Iowa have already passed strict voter-ID laws.

Republicans claim these laws are needed to stop voter fraud, but the claims of voter fraud is the fraud. These bills are being pushed because they make it harder for certain communities to vote -- and Republicans benefit when they vote in smaller numbers.

When politicians can pick their voters -- by voter suppression laws, by gerrymandering, by big money campaigns -- rather than voters picking their leaders, democracy is mocked. Political leaders in both parties should be pushing to make it easier, not harder, to vote. Instead, voter suppression has become a partisan weapon. Our very democracy is under assault.

he troubles for James Harden keep piling up. The son of former Houston Rockets Moses Malone Jr. has filed a lawsuit against current Houston Rockets James Harden saying he was the “mastermind” behind the robbery for which he was the target. Reports have indicated that Malone was beaten and robbed of $15,000 to $50,000 in personal property at a Houston club. Moses claims that Harden dished out $20,000 to fund the attack against him after Harden got upset over a Facebook post on Malone’s page about Harden’s basketball camp. Harden has not made any comments.

Census Numbers Probably Underestimated Hispanic Voter Turnout in Texas

hen the U.S. Census Bureau released its 2016 voting and election survey data last week, the numbers painted a grim picture of Hispanic voting gains in the 2016 presidential election: Just 48,000 more Hispanic Texans went to the polls compared with 2012, a dismal 2.5 percent increase, according to the federal count.

The census data resulted in a flurry of headlines indicating that Latino voters in Texas failed to boost their participation in the 2016 presidential election, despite the polarizing presence of candidate Donald Trump. But the Census Bureau numbers tell only one part of the story, and they do a poor job of actually counting voters, experts say. The state data show an increase of registered voters with Spanish surnames of 20 percent, from 2.9 million to 3.5 million.

Parents, Alumni Push HISD Board To Revisit HSPVA Naming Rights

ver since the Houston school board approved the naming rights to its flagship arts high school last fall, a vocal group of parents and alumni have opposed the deal. It let the Kinder Foundation add its name to the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, commonly called HSPVA, in exchange for $7.5 million.

The new Kinder HSPVA will move into a new $80 million building downtown in 2018. In a statement, HSPVA said that it’s grateful for the support that “will help ensure the school continues to maintain a level of excellence for generations to come.” The HISD board would have to take a second vote to revert to the original name

Texas Southern University Cancels Speech By GOP Sen. John Cornyn Amid Outcry

exas Southern University said Friday that it has canceled its commencement speech by John Cornyn, the U.S. senator who represents the public university. The decision comes amid outcry on the Houston campus over the Republican senator’s support for the Trump administration. Cornyn had been set to speak at the historically black university on Saturday. The university said in a statement that it has asked Cornyn “to instead visit with our students again at a future date in order to keep the focus on graduates and their families.” The university’s statement didn’t specifically give a reason for the cancellation. But Cornyn’s planned appearance had been generating pushback. A petition on Change.org had generated 846 signatures.

dangerous strain of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is far more common in Houston than anyone knew and shows signs it can spread prolifically, researchers reported Tuesday. It’s a specific strain of a bacteria known as Klebsiella pneumoniae. The superbug is showing a special talent for picking up genes that give it the ability to resist a broad range of antibiotics, the team at Houston Methodist hospital system said. NBC News reports doctors and public health officials have been warning for years about the rise of drug-resistant superbugs. They are especially dangerous to patients in the hospital for extended periods of time but they can also be found in people with ordinary infections such as cystitis and pneumonia.

Officials Across the State Are Challenging SB4

epresentatives from across the state are challenging SB4 before its’ effective date during a “summer of resistance.” SB4 is the controversial bill that police officers to question individuals about their immigration status. Many are saying this is a type of racial profiling. Houston’s own Police Chief Art Acevedo does not support the law because he believes it will harm public safety. Those who oppose the bill say it threaten citizens’ constitutional rights. City officials across the state are expected to vote on implementation of the bill by city attorneys in their city this week. Gov. Greg Abbott has already signed the bill and is set to go into effect in September.

ay Z and Beyoncé have crossed the billion-dollar mark. Forbes said Wednesday that the superstar couple’s net worth has climbed to $1.16 billion dollars.

Jay Z accounts for most of it: $810 million, according to the magazine’s latest “Richest In Hip-Hop” ranking. Beyoncé’s wealth is put at $350 million in Forbes’ “America’s Richest Self-Made women” list. Neither of them comes top of their respective rankings: Jay Z was beaten to the top spot by Sean “Diddy” Combs, while Beyoncé is 46th on a list topped by Little Caesars co-founder Marian Ilitch (who’s worth $5.1 billion).

Is Addressing Health Inequities A Bridge Too Far?

ublic Health Disparities Make Us All Sick” is the theme of this year’s 15th Annual Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice Workshop. This year, the workshop/ meeting will be held on the campus of Rice University in the Shell Auditorium at the Jones Graduate School of Business. For 15 years, the workshop and the fall course have been taking a different approach in educating the next generation. As Co-Chair Dr. Lisako McKyer said to one of the scholarship awardees for this year’s workshop, “I attended as a student, and it literally changed my life and impacted my career goals and aspirations deeply.”

The question that has perplexed me over the years is, how to translate this life changing event into attendance, and ultimately change the trajectory of health inequities and therefore the health of this nation, both mentally and physically? I have been told that the vision is too narrow. Not that it is too focused, but that it is ahead of the curve, the tip of the iceberg, where people see the tip and not the entire vision. It is evident that such doesn’t serve the workshop well.

That with Public Health, it is always playing catch-up. That the ideas and initiatives championed by the workshop and situated in biopsychosocial approaches were well before the new sexy term or flavor of the day and therefore didn’t gain traction easily.

Those visionaries are often alone... However, it has been 15 plus years, so it must be more than that.

However, as the old adage goes, without a vision the people shall perish. I have also been told, Public Health periodically hits a wall typically induced by government freezes and political climates etc....so one can’t expect them to come because you call or to get on board because you present the opportunities. In addition, there will always be a lag because the visionary will often be ahead of others and is therefore destined to be alone. Then add on that visionaries are sometimes accused of being self-serving.

At times if one is lucky, they will have the support of a small cadre who too share the vision and are willing to help make it manifest. I have been lucky to have such a group.

Who year after year come forth to help put on the workshop? However, the question here becomes, how long does it take to see the vision that Health Disparities/Inequities are a societal problem. That it takes a populous knowledgeable and ability to recognize the inequity, not just in health, but the other

contributing facts, even outside of the social determinants of health. A willingness to mobilize, and a willingness to be prepared to interrogate false narratives that say: “the gap between the rich and the poor is shrinking”, “people are living longer”, and “access to healthcare is better than ever”.

For more than 15 years of the Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice Educational Program has been a source of this very instruction, yet somehow, we, people aren’t interested in attending.

Could it be because health disparities are no longer the flavor of the day? Have people moved on to the latest sexy topic? Surely the prevailing attitude can’t be that the wicked problems of health inequity in America have been resolved....

I’ll digress. As I have said, addressing health alone will not solve the issues of health and health inequities. Again, it has to be addressed in a holistic manner, involving more than health and health activists. Health disparities/inequities. Are not just a health or public health issue it’s a societal issue. It is our issue! Therefore, expanding the tent and reaching out to those in other fields in which the intersectional of health issues nests with what they are doing either research-wise, in theory or in practice, is the path forward.

This was the very sentiment behind the development of the Biennial Symposium Series on Minorities, the Medically Underserved & Cancer (now health equity), the Center for Research on Minority Health/ Dorothy I Height Center for Health Equity & Evaluation Research and now the Health Disparities, Education, Awareness Research & Training (HDEART) Consortium and its course and workshop. Benefiting a broad range of disciplines, informing ideas and synergies on how we address Health Disparities/Inequities in America. So, who should be involved?

One of my mentees, Dee Jordan, summed it up this way.

Collegiate Education programs - often teach a critical race theory course, which opens student’s minds to inequity and many levels, that they might otherwise not understand or see on their own.

African American African Studies programs, Chicano Latino Studies programs, Native American, Asian & Pacific Islanders Studies and other not traditionally thought

Dr. Lovell A. Jones of, LGBTs - would likely find a workshop like this appealing for the liberation of the populations and groups they serve.

Psychology - many students of color in school psychology training programs recognized that a child in poor health will exhibit health and wellness issues that impact educational performance and attainment.

Economics – there are costs and steep economic impacts associated with Health Disparities Political ecology programs - Deal with historical disadvantage and disenfranchised people across landscapes Kinesiology programs - Can create programs that combat obesity within low income communities.

Food Science and Human Nutrition Pretty evident why they would be good fit – nutrition interventions are necessary.

Law Schools - Students study these issues and litigate matters of social justice…look at Flint, Love Canal, Standing Rock etc.

These are just a small sampling of programs where health disparities/inequities

engagement are poised and well suited. This has been what the workshop and course has been about for the past 15 years; having representatives from these fields and more.

So, the question remains, is addressing health disparities/inequities in this way a bridge too far?

On LinkedIn, the workshop announcements have attracted over 3000 distinct visits, yet less than at total 100 likes and of those few have registered. So, the question is how to turn these visits into likes and ultimately, registrants.

One suggestion is to make it Free to all attend. Does anyone have a benefactor for such? We have been able to keep the registration fee low. Who can attend to a week-long conference for less than $1000, let alone $500, and have an opportunity to eat and learn. I have been told that it is too long. I have go thru this exercise. What I get is more suggestions about what we didn’t cover. And, the length allows people to earn academic credits, of which three four institutions offer it as a course, and three have it as part of their degree program. So, help me understand the Calculus. So how do we make people feel that it is worth their time or investment? Again, Is this “A Bridge Too Far.”

That pivotal time has come for the class of 2017. It’s time for them to turn their tassel and take the brave steps into the next chapter of their lives. Annually, Houston Style Magazine recognizes the Houston ISD’s African American and Hispanic valedictorians to salute them on their accomplishments. Congrats Class of 2017!

Santos Flores Austin High School

Upon graduation from high school, Santos Flores will attend Carleton College on a POSSE Scholarship. He is undecided on a major. In high school, Flores’ favorite subject was physics. The honor roll student was a member of the National Honor Society and Christian Catholic Club. He loves playing tennis and video games.

Yemile Bazaldua Chavez High School

Upon graduation from high school, Yemile Bazaldua will attend Harvard University on a Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship. She will major in biomedical engineering. In high school, Bazaldua’s favorite subjects were calculus and biology.

The honor roll student is a former Homecoming Prince and Homecoming King. He was named Best Designer of the Robotics team and won Rube Goldberg Competition First Place.

Opportunity Day Gala “Celebrating 49 Years of Excellence”

he Houston Area Urban League (HAUL) will celebrate 49 years of providing services to the Greater Houston community on Saturday, June 17th, 2017 with its Equal Opportunity Day Gala featuring a dinner, Honoree recognition and entertainment.

The event will be held in the Ballroom of the Americas at the Hilton Americas Hotel, beginning at 6 p.m. with a reception, followed by the program and dinner at 7:00 pm. This year’s featured entertainment will be Texas Southern University.

The Gala is a key fundraiser benefiting HAUL’s ongoing programs that serve the Houston community in areas such as workforce and economic development, housing and community service, education, and workforce training and health advocacy. In 2016, HAUL served over 10,000 Houstonians.

This year we are honored to have serving as our Honorary Chairs, Dr. Carolyn Farb, hc, Philanthropist and Author, and Dr. Rod Paige, Former Secretary of Education; and as Gala Chairs, Marina Coryat and Yolanda Green Barnes. he days are getting longer and hotter and you’re itching to head outside to kick off grilling season. After a few weeks of eating the same boring burgers and hot dogs, you’re looking for something a little more exciting (and so are your guests). These recipes can help take your grilling skills to the next level and make your next party something to brag about.

When people come over for Buffalo chicken, they expect authentic flavor, so give the people what they want by making Buffalo chicken sandwiches with Frank’s RedHot Buffalo Wings Sauce. Frank’s RedHot was the secret ingredient used in the original Buffalo wings recipe in 1964.

For maximum flavor, each Buffalo chicken sandwich gets a quarter of the bottle of sauce to bring in just the right blend of flavor and heat.

Take it to the next level by marinating the chicken in the sauce for at least 30 minutes so it can absorb the unmistakable Buffalo flavor that will send any party into overdrive. Add the tangy blue cheese and cool, crisp lettuce and tomato and you’ve got the perfect bite for a hot summer day.

Now that you’ve proved your grilling chops to most of the party crew, it’s time to kick it up a notch.

Every party’s got a few tough critics, so it’s key to make something impressive and delicious that appeals to a different palate.

Enter: Sweet Chili Ribs.

Start with two full racks of pork spareribs then load them up with Frank’s RedHot Sweet Chili Sauce, garlic and ginger, making sure to spread that mixture all over the ribs.

Grill them low and slow for 2 hours then pour another half-bottle of sauce over top for good measure and grill for another hour.

After your guests have a chance to taste these sweet and tangy, fall-off-the-bone ribs, they’ll talk about them all summer long.

Buffalo Chicken Sandwich 4

1 Hot 1/4 4 1/4

boneless, skinless chicken breast halves (if thick, cut horizontally into two even pieces) bottle (12 ounces) Frank’s RedBuffalo Wings Sauce, divided cup blue cheese or ranch dressing hard rolls, split cup blue cheese crumbles lettuce leaves (optional) tomato slices (optional) red onion rings (optional)

Marinate chicken in 6 ounces Buffalo wings sauce for 30 minutes, or up to 3 hours.

Mix remainder of Buffalo wings sauce and dressing together. Keep refrigerated until ready to use.

Grill chicken 12 minutes, turning once, or until no longer pink in center.

Place 2 tablespoons of mixed sauce on each roll half. Place chicken on top of roll half and top with 1 tablespoon blue cheese crumbles.

Add lettuce, tomato and onion rings, if desired. Top with second roll half. Repeat for remaining sandwiches.

Sweet Chili Ribs 2

full racks pork spareribs, trimmed (about 6 pounds) tablespoons fresh ginger, minced cloves garlic, minced bottle (12 ounces) Frank’s Red Hot Sweet Chili Sauce, divided

Heat grill to 250 F and prepare for indirect cooking.

Spread ribs with ginger and garlic. Place ribs on rib rack or in foil pan. Cook on covered grill 2 hours.

Spread 6 ounces sweet chili sauce evenly over ribs then cook another hour, until tender.

Baste ribs with remaining sweet chili sauce during last 15 minutes of cooking. If desired, at end of cooking time grill ribs over direct heat to char slightly.

zzzzzzzzip. That was the sound of your last weekend as it passed by, but it probably doesn’t matter anyhow: it was packed with work, To-Dos and obligations, kid’s sports, and more work. Sometimes, you wonder why you even bother.

You might as well just go to the office – but first, read “The Weekend Effect” by Katrina Onstad before you zip out Friday afternoon.

When was the last time you had two full days without plans? If you’re like most working adults, answering may take you a few minutes. Chances are, it’s been awhile; like millions of North American employees, our weekend is “not a weekend at all.”

Much like the seven-day week, weekends are manmade things: Ancient civilizations created our modern week, the Old Testament demarked a day of rest, and employers tried forcing workers to toil most of both.

In 1791, U.S. carpenters held the first strike over hours; the eight-hour day started to take hold in the late 1800s; Henry Ford introduced a five-day workweek in 1926; and generally, there we were until the digital age, when employees could – and do - carry work with them everywhere.

Considering that fifteenth-century serfs enjoyed a holiday-filled church calendar, says Onstad, you may work more now than did a medieval peasant. That’s not good for mind or body, and employers are starting to recognize that. Known for obsessively-focused marathon workweeks, Silicon Valley may taketh away, but it also giveth: some high-tech start-ups offer employees flextime and demand down-time. Your boss may welcome happier employees who aren’t so stressed. Four-day workweeks aren’t

rare anymore, nor are half-day Fridays.

And yet, Onstad says, if someone asked you what you’d do with free weekends, you might struggle with a list. Think: you can actually visit with real people, in-person.

You could volunteer more, read more, attend more church, or go for more walks.

In short, you can stop, and learn to do less. What would you do with two unencumbered days? Imagine the possibilities, and then read “The Weekend Effect.”

While it might seem that few people need convincing when it comes to taking time off, author Katrina Onstad shows, in her first pages, why some people feel trapped into working more. Readers might see themselves in some of Onstad’s short profiles – we obviously have compatriots in our drivenness – as we learn why a “cult of overwork” is detrimental to both individual and to a business. Yes, we can brag, but it’s unsustainable and we’re hurting ourselves, as it turns out.

Once you have the ammo needed to try to make change, Onstad offers things that might now take up that newly-gotten freetime. There’s a surprise in that: whatever you think you like to do on your weekends, you could be doing it all wrong.

This book is eye-opening, but it may also tell you something you already know: you work too hard. For confirmation, though, or for further reasons why you need shut off your phone and find a hammock, “The Weekend Effect” has that all zipped up.
