Our Most Vulnerable Live in Poverty

ur news is driven by scandal, crisis, and tragedy. A bridge falls in Florida. Trump insults someone in a tweet. Stormy Daniels sues the president, and his lawyers file motions against her.

Facebook allows the personal data of 50 million people to be used without their knowledge. And so on. What gets lost in the noise is often what is most important. Think about the future of this country. Surely the fact that nearly one in five children is in poverty is a stunning and terrible portent.

We are one of the richest countries in the world, but we rank 36 out of 41 countries in the number of children in poverty among developed nations, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Only Greece, Mexico, Israel and Turkey are worse. Nearly 40 percent of children will spend one year in poverty before they turn 18. Children in poverty experience housing insecurity, inadequate health care and food deprivation. That leads to lower achievement in school, more illness, more mental and emotional health problems and more obesity.

Poverty is a choice, not a fate. The U.S. spends less than 10 percent of its federal budget on kids, a fraction of what other

industrialized countries spend. Public investment in family benefits rank among the lowest as a percentage of GDP. We give tax cuts to billionaires and choose not to provide universal preschool to all. Poverty is shameful. We’d rather not look at it. We prefer to blame those who are in poverty than act to erase it. Even if they are children under the age of 6.

This is a scandal, but it doesn’t get headlines. It is a horrible human tragedy, but it gets only infrequent attention. It is a crisis of the children who suffer in poverty, but simply business as usual for a wealthy country that has learned to ignore it.

Across the world, countries have learned how to erase childhood poverty. Most developed countries give a child benefit to parents. Most guarantee universal preschool.

Health care is universal and comprehensive.

Childcare is public and affordable. Affordable housing is available. Food security is guaranteed.

In the U.S., these programs are starved for funds. The poor are stigmatized. They must be poor because they don’t try; they are accused of being lazy, of failing. Yet, since the federal minimum wage was last

raised in 2009 to the current $7.25 per hour, it has lost about 9.6 percent of its purchasing power to inflation, according to the Pew Research Center.

Our society has used zoning and redlining to ensure that the poor are shuffled into impoverished neighborhoods. It uses unemployment to ensure that inflation doesn’t get too high. It prices college out of the reach of the poor, or forces them into debt to reach for it.

We choose to leave Want to Make America Great Again? Start with the most vulnerable in the springtime of life.

DeVos said the department was delaying the implementation of the rule “to ensure that we have a regulation that really does meet the needs of students who are disabled in any way.”

Harris County to Turn Riverside Hospital into a Mental Health Facility [HoustonPublicMedia.org]

he former Riverside General Hospital will get a new lease on life. Harris County will purchase the building in Houston’s Third Ward, to revive it as a mental health facility. Harris County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to purchase Riverside out of federal bankruptcy. That’s the first step in what’s expected to be a seven-year process. Houston Endowment will help raise the $18 million the county will need to refurbish the building. In its new incarnation, Riverside will house a clinic for the underserved Third Ward. It will also let Harris County divert some mentally ill individuals out of the jail system. Judge Ed Emmett said, though, that this will do little to relieve the pressure on the jail, considered one of the largest mental health providers in Texas.

Houston Filmmaker Debuts ‘Rich Kids’ at Houston Latino Film Festival [Houston Public Media]

ow in its third year, the Houston Latino Film Festival puts Latino culture on the big screen. The non-profit organization is dedicated to developing, promoting and increasing awareness of Latino culture among Latinos and other communities by presenting a variety of art and films to the Houston area. Featured films come from all over the world and Houstonians can be proud as a native Laura Somers’ Rich Kids made its debut. Rich Kids tells the story of underprivileged youth in today’s society through the eyes of six Latino teens who decide to break into the mansion of their rich neighbors, known as “Los Ricos.” The film gives audiences a glimpse into the despair, hopes, and dreams that youth from low-income communities go through daily.

he suspect in the Austin explosions blew himself up in his vehicle as police closed in, Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said. Police started getting intel on the 24-year-old man, who has been identified as Mark Anthony Conditt over the past 36 hours, and surveillance teams were on his trail, Manley said. His vehicle was found at a hotel in Round Rock. The serial bomber had terrorized Texas’ capital all month, dispatching explosive packages around the area and killing two people. The main focus in the hours before the bombmaker’s death had been an explosion at a FedEx sorting center near San Antonio. Another unexploded bomb was found at another FedEx facility near Austin. Police said those two packages are connected to four previous bombings in the city.

Dallas Hispanic Women Poverty Rate Higher Than Women in Other Counties [DallasNews.com]

he Dallas Women’s Foundation and the Institute for Women’s Policy Research recently released a report that found that Hispanic women are locked in poverty in the Dallas area at shocking rates. The report found that women in general earn far less than men in most Dallas counties but that Hispanic women lag so far behind in Dallas counties that they appeared unable to break free of the bonds of poverty. According to the study, the median annual earnings in Dallas County for Hispanic women is $25,345, about $11,000 less than for African-American women and about $26,168 less than for white women.

As a result of poverty level wages, Hispanic women in Dallas County experienced the highest poverty rate, 22.8 percent, more than women in the other counties.

NISSAN Confessions of a Weekend

With the All New Nissan Leaf

ravel writing was once my passion.

Lupus, a systemic autoimmune disease that occurs when one’s immune system attacks the body’s tissue and organs, took that joy away from me. Not because I am no longer able to enjoy traveling, but when you are on assignment, sometimes there is an itinerary that needs to be strictly followed. Which means an agenda that is jam-packed with activities from sunup to sundown. For me, someone that is plagued by this unfortunate illness, it gets tough to keep going with the rest of the group.

Don’t get me wrong, it is a blessing to be able to travel the world to share my experiences with readers like you, but I just knew I couldn’t do it anymore.

Or at least that’s what I thought.

Recently, I was given the opportunity to experience an all-ladies one of a kind tailored event hosted by Nissan. Not only was I going to get to experience Napa Valley and its wineries, but I was also going to be able to drive the all-new Nissan Leaf which was featured in Ava Duvernay’s “A Wrinkle In Time!”

Exciting indeed but of course, I had my reservations. Would I be able to drive the distance? Would my hands be in pain from holding the steering wheel too long? What about my legs – would they cramp up from accelerating then braking through the hills? My biggest fear stood about 20-feet tall and was staring me in my face. If I let down my hosts by not being able to enjoy the full experience, then what? Not being able to drive the Nissan Leaf and enjoying sunny California weighed heavily on me.

But I was determined to see it through.

Day of Arrival The ride from the airport to my accommodations at the Yountville Resort & Spa in Yountville was a pleasant one. The onehour drive allowed time to get to know a few of the ladies that would be joining along on the weekend trip. Upon arrival to the resort, we were welcomed by the Nissan team and escorted to our rooms to have the opportunity to freshen up before our evening welcome reception/dinner.

Can I just take the opportunity to tell you that if you ever decide to visit Napa Valley, this resort is the one to call home for a few days? The resort vibe is complete serenity! The vast rooms offer plush bedding, a seating area to enjoy your coffee (or in my case, wine) while snuggling up to the warmth of the fireplace in your resort supplied robe and slippers. Also, the bath amenities the resort offers for the best bath experience in the oversized spa tub Our welcome reception was nothing short of amazing. To be surrounded by a diverse group of women with impressive resumes ranging from top bloggers in the US to documentary filmmakers, I was

And then it happened, self-doubt crept in.

These beautiful women with such impressive resumes, I started asking myself what I was doing there.

“What did I have to offer?”

Day 2 After breakfast and a presentation by Nissan, I got to hear about and all of the amazing things the company is doing to empower young ladies in STEM. Once our hosts went over the details of the allnew Nissan Leaf, it was time to make our drive to our first vineyard of the day, the Francis Ford Coppola Winery, named after the famed director of “The Godfather” trilogy. As I familiarized myself with the necessary features of the Leaf, that worry still loomed in the back of my mind. However, about 10 minutes into the drive, all that worry floated into thin air. I let the windows down and let the high-tech features of the Nissan Leaf assist me with my driving.

The Leaf’s innovative “e-pedal” technology changed everything I knew about driving. Being from Houston, I’m used to bumper-to-bumper traffic and repeating the practice of gas-brake-repeat. The e-pedal function uses the motor to slow the car down instead of having to use the brake. In other words, if you want to slow down, all you have to do is let go of the

The Leaf’s heated seats soothed my body, which was in slight pain due to inflammation. Also, my hands tend to get a bit arthritic as well so do you know how excited I was to learn that the vehicle also has a heated steering wheel? A heated steering wheel! The heat radiating to my hands brought all the comfort in the world.

It alleviated the pain and let me enjoy one of the most amazing drives I’ve had in a long time. And just like that, my driving time was done. We arrived at the beautiful Francis Ford Coppola Winery, took in the views and then headed off to our next destination, Peju Province Winery.

It was at this winery that we got to see first-hand the Nissan Leaf vehicles that were designed specifically for the “A Wrinkle in Time” in partnership with Disney. Yes, I touched the same spot on the custom-made Leaf that Oprah Winfrey laid her hands on. We may as well be BFFs now.

Accomplished Women. Food. Wine.

Laughter. That is what my day consisted of. As if it couldn’t get any better, that evening we were treated to the premiere of “A Wrinkle in Time.” Without giving away any spoilers, this film was everything I didn’t know I needed. That night, I replayed the film in my mind and its message of girl power, getting rid of self-doubt, and

learning how to accept a compliment without deflecting. So, if you still haven’t seen the film, please do your self a favor and do so.

Heading back to Houston, I reflected on my journey. How I’ve come to appreciate the world despite my illness and that for once, the universe decided to craft physical relaxation around what ails me. I no longer felt the doubt of being unable to complete a trip. No longer did I continuously think I had been arrested by my illness when I was supposed to be relaxing and taking in a new experience. Letting others assist me finally allowed me to let someone else take the wheel and let me be myself. Surrounded by these talented, gorgeous women also showed that I did have worth and purpose, that in my way, I’m a peer of theirs and accepting and receptive of all of the love given towards me. A trip to Napa Valley was supposed to be the new Nissan Leaf.

Instead, it became a trip of my self-discovery and finding power when doubt seemed always to cripple me.

So thank you to the wonderful women of Nissan and thank you to the desiners and creators of the Nissan Leaf. Everytime I drive now, I dream of ways to try to beat down the oil and gas industry of this great state because I desperately need the 100% electric Nissan Leaf in my life!

pon their husbands answering the call to minister, preachers’ wives stood alongside their husband in a supportive role. Even when their husbands would further follow the path as a shepherd of God by heading a church, wives remained supportive in their new role as First Lady.

However, today’s First Ladies are more than supportive for they are as big a public figure as their significant other leading ministries of their own and making their own marks on the community.

Standing right beside their God-fearing husband, First Ladies are answering the call to minister to God’s people in a first class way. In celebration of Women’s History Month, Houston Style Magazine spotlights five First Ladies from the top five largest African American megachurches in the city.

SPORTS A Big Splash: The Texans

Come Up Huge in Free Agency

T

he Houston Texans did not dive right into the deep end of the pool when the NFL free agency market opened. They took their time. Texans general manager Brian Gaine, who replaced former general manager Rick Smith, let the city of Houston know exactly who he was by making some key moves to improve the team.

Going into the off-season, the Texans had many questions to answer and holes to fill. One of the major needs was on the offensive line. With rookie sensation QB Deshaun Watson returning from injury this year, the team needed to bring in some players who would be able to protect the future franchise player.

The departure of Duane Brown (traded to Seattle) during the season left a lot of unanswered question on the line. Houston also had a lot of salary cap room (62.4 M) that they could use to help fill voids.

That is helpful since they don’t pick until the third round (68th) due to trades that allowed them to acquire Watson.

Within the span of two days, the Texans went out and found some offensive line help in the form of two guards and

one right tackle. Zach Fulton (G) comes to Houston after a stint with the Kansas City Chiefs. His versatility will make it easy for the Texans to move him to center. Senio Kelemete (G) is a very talented offensive lineman who the New Orleans Saints did not want to see get away.

The 6’3 300-pound lineman has the potential to become one of the best linemen in the league. Houston also went out and signed Seantrel Henderson (RT) out of Buffalo who had been a starter for them back in the 2014-15 season before injury and a substance abuse violation hindered his career. Henderson will have an opportunity to display what made him such a good offensive lineman for the Texans next year.

For as much as Houston needed help on the offensive side of the ball, they were also in dire need of help on the defensive side as well.

After suffering injuries on the defensive line and the departure of long time Houston favorite LB Brian Cushing, the team needed to do something to improve a unit that ranked last in total defense and gave up 237 passing yards per game last year.

Tyrann Mathieu In a very well calculated move, the team brought back veteran defensive back Jonathan Joseph and signed Aaron Colvin from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Those were transactions that were expected. What the fans of Houston did not see coming was the signing of all-pro defensive back Tyron

Mathieu who had been cut by the Arizona Cardinals. Mathieu, will not only bring his dynamic cover skills but will show why he was one of the league’s best tacklers against the run. No better way for GM Brian Gaine to win over the Texans fans than by making a “Big Splash.”

Two Schools, Two Coaches, Texas Strong in March Madness

Texas Southern University and the University of Houston literally sit right across the street from each other. Both have put millions of dollars into their universities trying to make them more than commuter schools, which is a difficult task when you’re in the heart of the fourth largest city in the country. Not to mention the giants in College Station and Austin thrive off the Houston market.

Two colleges erected from the dirt for working class men and women. The University of Houston for whites, Texas Southern for blacks, so isn’t it ironic that almost 90 years later both schools went into the NCAA Tournament with a working class, underdog pedigree.

Mike Davis had it even worse. HBCU’s make their money from playing big time schools. A game against a Division 1 program can keep the lights on for the entire season. Not only did he have to build a program but he had to build it while constantly losing. While constantly taking long bus trips and accepting kids that had burned bridges at other colleges.

Their head coaches aren’t very different; two men that were once at the height of their profession. Kelvin Sampson who built an Oklahoma program from a bottom feeder in the Big 12 to a dominant team.

Mike Davis who was one of the youngest coaches in the Big 10 at the storied Indiana. These men were destined to stand alongside coaching greats and for both of them those destinies never became

Both schools had their moments and both schools fell short - the University of Houston on a miracle three at the buzzer; Texas Southern simply too small going up against of one the best teams in the country. After the sports shows have gone off and the next set of games start, the lights are now gone and social media has moved

on, the two coaches still stand.

Will this be the beginning of a resurgence for UofH? Will Texas Southern start to compete with bigger schools? Will both coaches stay or let the allure of bigger schools and bigger fan bases pull them back in?

So many questions, so many unknowns, but for one weekend in March Third Ward, Texas was the center of the basketball universe.

Mixing Country and City in the 2018 GMC Canyon Denali Diesel

ith all the plethora of trucks in the city for the rodeo, I felt like I had been given membership to the unofficial truck club with the keys in my hand to the 2018 GMC Canyon 4WD Denali Diesel. Though I felt privileged for my membership, it did not help my confidence any when preparing to review this midsize truck until I took a closer look.

Trucks, in general, intimidate me. Since I am so use to driving small cars, driving big trucks, even this midsize one, put me a little on edge. I am always worried about parking and hitting a side rail. Those are always my initial thoughts until I start driving the truck and then I wonder why I ever had those thoughts in the first place because I feel so comfortable behind the wheel of a truck.

Hence was the case in the GMC Canyon.

One big reason for my comfort level was because it is a midsize truck. Meaning it was not too big or too small but right dab smack in the middle, making it perfect for me. First impressions of the GMC Canyon were high.

It is a very attractive truck. Chrome is not overly placed. Lines guide the eyes around its natural curves. From a design aspect, the GMC Canyon bridges the muscular nature that men like with the flair that women love.

I especially loved all the convenient features that allow easier access to the cabin and bed of the truck in the form of the cornerstep on the rear bumper and sidestep along the sides of the truck.

The GMC Canyon comes in two-wheel or four-wheel drive with short or long bed options. The standard 5.2-foot bed is the longest in its class. So there is lots of space to load up on whatever you need to haul around. Putting those items in the bed of the truck will be easy with the EZ lift and lower tailgate. When towing a trailer is called for larger jobs, aligning the truck with the trailer is made less challenging with the new Active Tow system that is now standard. New trim packages and color palette is also available to boost up the exterior look. Nothing too outside the normal realm is inside the cabin.

Not too many thrills are seen on the inside as the GMC Canyon gives drivers the best of functionality and style. Since my review vehicle was the Denali trim level it was equipped with a Bose premium audio system, navigation system, and my favorite feature, an exclusive wireless charging pad.

Oftentimes drivers will complain about the difficult time they had controlling the infotainment system. Not the case in the GMC Canyon. I found the full color 8.0-inch IntelliLink unit very easy to use.

Responsiveness was high so I didn’t have to overly push buttons or tabs to maneuver the screen. Available features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth Technology, and Real-Time Weather and Traffic make the drive and the experience that much more enjoyable.

Trucks, I believe, are made for off-road because I think of them as natural workhorses that need space to work. But when you’re a city girl like me, trucks are safety nets, as I almost feel invincible on the road.

It seems people just automatically kind of give you space on the road unless they are driving an even bigger truck. Claiming my rightful space on the asphalt allowed me to test out the power behind the Canyon. In

less than seven seconds, the GMC Canyon can reach a speed of over 60mph, extremely quick for its class. Because it is midsize the GMC Canyon performs quite well on highways and byways absorbing the shocks of any bumps in the road. The ride is smooth and handling is excellent. Best of all is the fuel economy, which is expected with a diesel engine.

The 2.8 L Duramax has an increased torque of 369 ft lbs but that also makes it drop in horsepower. I didn’t mind that since I didn’t have to fill up once during my weeklong review and believe you I put some miles on the GMC Canyon. That was most impressive. EPA estimates were blown out of the water considering this is a truck. The GMC Canyon has a fuel economy of 20mpg city and 28mpg highway. How many trucks have that average?

If safety features are high on your list as areas of concerns, the GMC Canyon will ease those. Its scores on safety testing are average. It has keyless entry but not keyless start. StabiliTrak-stability control, driver and front passenger airbags with side curtains, rear vision camera, teen driver, and the driver alert package are all standard.

Base price at just over $43,000, the GMC Canyon is a good value for the amount of truck that you get. I found it to be just right for those who have a whole lot of city with a little bit of country like me. That mix is perfectly made due to the upgrades that come with the Denali trim level. Lack of Trust, Poor Communication Slow CKD Screening Among Blacks

ow trust in doctors and the healthcare system, as well as poor communication from clinicians, were some of the barriers to kidney disease screening among black Americans, according to a focus group-based study. Lack of knowledge about chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its risk factors, as well as the belief that, “God is ultimately in charge of their health,” were other barriers identified by Ebele Umeukeje, MD, of Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, and colleagues.

Strategies to overcome these obstacles should include more culturally sensitive education about CKD, collaboration with community spiritual leaders, and more convenient screening opportunities, the team advised in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

The study was based on three focus group sessions that included 32 black Americans.

Their mean age was 56, and the majority (79%) were female. Most had more than a high school education (82%) and had health insurance (91%). Few self-reported a diagnosis of kidney disease (3%), but most reported having risk factors such as hypertension (70%), diabetes (24%), or a family history of kidney disease (27%).

The incidence of CKD is three times higher in blacks than in whites, and the prevalence of the disease has stabilized among all racial groups in the United States except black Americans, the study authors said.The current study confirmed results of previous studies, but also identified import-

1/3 cup plain protein powder 1 cup plain full-fat Greek yogurt 1/4 cup water 1/2 ripe Hass avocado 1 cup kale leaves 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint 1 teaspoon stevia (sugar substitute) 1/2 cup fresh or frozen berries such as blackberries, strawberries or raspberries 2 tablespoons almond or walnut halves 2 tablespoons chia seeds In blender, blend protein powder, yogurt, water, avocado, kale, mint and stevia until smooth then divide between two bowls.

As in the new novel, “Down the River Unto the Sea” by Walter Mosley, it’s time to set things right.

The last thing Joe King Oliver needed was that letter. Joe was already skittish and uneasy in his own skin, and he certainly didn’t trust very readily. That’s what happens when you’re wrongly accused of a crime but you spend ninety days in Riker’s anyway, in solitary confinement, listening to other men scream, waiting to be killed. Yes, though that all happened more than a decade ago, it still simmered in Joe Oliver’s soul.

But that letter. It came from a woman who wrote that her name was Beatrice but she was Nathali Malcolm once, long ago, when she was coerced into setting him up. When her lies and accusations sent an innocent man to prison. Through the years, Joe couldn’t figure out why it happened, let alone who’d done it. He left Riker’s broken, with a lost marriage, a lost NYPD job… just lost. Weeks after his release, his only friend stepped in quietly and helped Joe with a PI business, and that’s where Joe was when he read the letter.

He didn’t want revenge – not completely, anyhow – but he did want his name cleared.

beautiful woman came to his office with a suitcase full of money and a story of an activist who was railroaded straight to jail for a double-cop-homicide, the time seemed right to fix a few wrongs.

But the more Joe looked at his case and that of the activist, the more he saw similarities he couldn’t ignore. In solving one injustice, could he solve another? And was it safer to trust a real demon, than to live with the demons in his life? Here’s the thing I love best about Walter Mosley novels: the main characters are solid. You feel like you could lean on them all day, and they’d never budge.

That’s Joe King Oliver, and that’s “Down the River Unto the Sea.” And yet, there’s wiggle room in this book: Mosley doesn’t destroy readers’ fun by telling who done it in this noir whodunit. Instead, we’re allowed the same dawning realization that Mosley’s Joe has, and that just sharpens the gasping you’ll do while reading.

Add a swirl of street-darkness, a few soulless characters and some clueless ones, a bit of pure evil, and you’ll be turning pages far, far into the night. This is one of those books that leaves you a little breathless – not only while you’re reading, but once the back cover’s closed, too. For anyone who loves hard-bitten PI thrillers, reading “Down to the River Unto the Sea” couldn’t be more right.

Emerging young talented sculptors were in Houston to showcase their work and also chiseled pieces right before attendees’ eyes. Zimbabwe sculpture broke out onto the world stage with works by the “First Generation” artists collected by Queen Elizabeth, as well as major collections worldwide. A percentage of the art showing hosted by Amanda Brock, Myrtle Jones, Angela Lee, and Shawntell McWilliams benefitted Genesys Works Houston.
