If your pet’s breath has you turning away, it could be more than just an unpleasant smell. It may be a sign they’re uncomfortable.

In fact, by age three, most pets show signs of periodontal disease, which can cause pain, infection, and even impact vital organs if left untreated. The good news? With the right care, it’s both preventable and treatable.

At VDS®, our team of board-certified veterinary specialists in dentistry and anesthesia provide advanced dental care to diagnose, treat, and prevent oral disease — helping your pet live a healthier, more comfortable life. Contact us today to learn more about our services.

JUNE IS...

National Pet Preparedness Month

For me, real estate has always been about helping people find a place to call home — and I believe every animal deserves that same chance. Supporting rescue organizations, advocating for adoption, and celebrating the joy pets bring into our lives is at the heart of everything I do. My mission is simple: use my platform, my voice, and my work to help more animals find safety, love, and a forever home.

Now is the perfect time to make sure your furry family members are ready for the unexpected. With summer bringing increased risks like extreme heat, storms, and natural disasters, a little planning now can go a long way toward keeping pets safe and comfortable.

SIMPLE STEPS TO STAY PREPARED THIS JUNE:

Build a Pet Go‑Kit: Stock 3–7 days of food and water, medications, leashes, carriers, and basic cleanup supplies.

Check Identification: Make sure microchip details are current and keep a recent photo plus medical records sealed in a waterproof pouch.

Have a Pet Plan: Know which hotels, boarding facilities, shelters, or out‑of‑town friends can accommodate pets in an emergency.

Practice Makes Calm: Help pets get comfortable entering carriers so evacuations are quicker and less stressful.

A little preparation today can make all the difference tomorrow. BECAUSE PETS ARE FAMILY, TOO!

ON THE COVER

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

We had lots of laughs for our photoshoot at Shell Energy Stadium with the Houston Dynamo, Dash and our fave mascot Diesel. Meet some players and their pets, along with World Cup highlights as Houston hosts FIFA 2026 this month. The players and staff were so gracious with their time and their furry friends! Enjoy our soccer-themed feature and be sure to support both teams at their games this summer - and mark your calendar for Oct. 4 as the Dash will host Pups On The Pitch Night. Cover Photo: Photography By Prudence.

June in Houston always feels like the official kickoff to summer — the days get hotter, the evenings get longer, the kids are out of school, and suddenly the whole city seems to come alive with energy. But this year, we really are "kicking-off" with FIFA World Cup 2026 coming to NRG Stadium! Our city is preparing to take center stage for the entire world to see. There’s something really cool about watching a global sport bring together people from every culture, language, and background, (which sounds a whole lot like Houston).

So, in celebration of the beautiful game of soccer (or football, as much of the world calls it), our June cover and feature story pay tribute to Houston soccer in the most H-Town Pets way possible: hometown pride. This month, we’re excited to showcase players from our hometown pro teams, the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash, along with everyone’s favorite mascot, Diesel. A few players from each team shared their furry besties with us, and we had an absolute blast during our photo shoot at Shell Energy Stadium. Let’s just say the dogs definitely stole the spotlight a few times with their funny antics. A huge thank you to the Dynamo and Dash organizations for spending time with us and helping us create such a fun and memorable feature.

Cup schedule to get everyone in the soccer mood early!

Another fan-favorite tradition returns this month with our 18th Annual Pets in the Wildflowers Photo Contest, sponsored by Goodman Financial. One of my favorite things about this contest is that we print every single entry — because honestly, there’s no such thing as too many happy pets in bluebonnets. Check them out on pages 40–44 to enjoy all the wagging tails, sweet smiles, and picture-perfect springtime photo ops.

And speaking of fun in the sun, we’re officially announcing our upcoming annual Beach Bum Contest, sponsored by Miranda Burks, Realtor, Next Gen. Grab your camera the next time you head to the beach and snap a splashy photo of your pet for a chance to win. Sandy paws, goofy grins, and salty noses are highly encouraged!

THE OCEAN FLOOR OF BELIZE

This has to be one of the BEST submissions of all time! Jan Baughman sent us a great e-mail with this incredible shot, noting "I am an avid scuba diver and I have taken PetTalk all over the world with me." Wow - we are so impressed and honored! Of course, we had to ask how she accomplished this shot - she took the magazine in a zip lock bag to the best spot her scuba buddy knew, who is an avid underwater photographer, put down her own camera and posed for the shot. Thank you Jan for sharing this amazing photo and sending us such good vibes from the ocean floor!

ON SUMMER MUSINGS

When I was a pup still in school, as soon as the bell rang for the last day of the year, we would all run out the door singing: "School's out, School's out, the Teachers let the Monkeys out!” I have no idea why we didn't say dogs instead of monkeys now that I think about it. Anyway, no one was happier than DL when school was out for summer break because it meant no more carpool. And speaking of carpool, one time I had flag duty and it was next to the carpool line and all the moms had gotten out of their cars to gather and, well...basically grumble. They complained about having to wait in line, the stupid homework that even they couldn't do, how the book fair was basically extortion through coercion and shame for those kids who didn't buy something, how Ms. Francis, the third grade teacher was flirting with everyone's husband and that being the room mom was the worst job in the world. Hhmf. Overhearing this, I was left to wonder why they had children at all, but I digress. Let's get to what I wanted to discuss...Summer FUN!

I have a long list of things I look forward to in the summer and an equally long list of things that are my pet peeves. First, my LOVE list:

1. I love water. I love to swim in the ocean, swim in a pool, roll in a mud puddle, run through a water hose (or drink from it), and “water” trees, fire hydrants, signs, poles…basi cally anything.

2. I love vacation. Duh.

3. I love late night runs to Taco Bell. Mmmm…the Gordita is so cheesy and meaty... and it rhymes with Margarita. BTW, Chihua huas aren’t the only ones with a penchant for Mexican food.

4. After the Taco Bell run, I love TP-ing Daphne the Ditsy Dachshund's house. It brings great levity to my soul listening to her wonder how it “rained toilet paper” the next day.

6. I love when Dragon Lady decides to be nice for a minute (that’s probably her max) and makes me frozen pupcicles. She adds peanut butter when she is really on top of her game.

7. I love the 4th of July and this year's 250th is going to be the BEST! I know, most canines are freaked out by fireworks but I love the sky erupting in a brilliant array of sparkling fun and you never know what’s going to

Given that food is involved in several of my summer LOVE list faves, you can probably guess what’s on the top of my summer HATE list.

1. Yes, wearing a swimsuit. There is nothing to like about covering yourself with something the size of a handkerchief and then getting it wet so it sticks to your skin like Saran Wrap.

5. I love laying in a hammock under the stars imagining that my main man Matthew McConaughey is next to me, rubbing my belly while I lick his face. I imagine that he loves this too.

expecting my list will include something with chocolate. You know me well. I LOVE making Smores by the fire. Gooey chocolate, warm marshmallows with a crunchy gingerbread exterior. I think whoever invented this pure awesomeness should be Knighted or get the Nobel Peace Prize or Presidential Medal of Freedom or at least the Girl Scout Gold Award.

2. I hate that there are no fireflies to catch. Where have they gone? Cousin Hilda thinks they were all abducted by the Chinese to make

3. I hate mosquitoes. Duh.

4. I hate girls that wear a size 4 swimsuit and when they walk their tail wags so proudly that it makes their be-hind wiggle. I wish Big Girl Pants were considered proper pool attire.

5. I hate slimy politicians. I know this has nothing to do with summer…they are slimy all year round but I just had

6. I hate brain-freeze. Those Slush Puppies always look so good that I suck them down until it feels like my brain is going to explode

7. I hate that everyone decides to go on vacation at the same time I do. I swear someone leaks my calendar to the media.

8. I hate that half my hair falls out. Dragon Lady hates it even more. She threatens to "furminate" me every summer but I'm faster than her.

9. I hate beaches that don’t allow dogs to run off leash. Do you know how hard it is to fetch a tennis ball from the ocean with a human on the

10. I hate the dog park because everyone smells like sweat, mud, flea preventative and whatever their human last ate in the car. And if that’s not enough, goobers are dangling from any dog’s mouth that weighs over 40lbs. I’d rather go shopping.

One last note on summer: If you are a human reading this, remember that when you decide to exercise in 95 degree weather, we really don’t want to join you. #TooHotForOurPaws. If you are a dog reading this, I am impressed!

HOUSTON SHELTERS TEAM UP

PUPPY CUP ADOPTIONS

This June, as Houston welcomes the excitement of the World Cup, local animal shelters are joining the celebration with a fun new campaign: the “Puppy Cup.”

Inspired by the international matches taking place at Houston Stadium, the Puppy Cup will feature adoptable dogs from Houston-area shelters representing countries competing in Houston throughout the tournament. From spirited team “captains” to playful game-day predictions, the campaign is designed to bring together soccer fans, animal lovers, and the community for a month of fun.

Throughout the tournament, participating shelters will share adorable photos, videos, and themed social content featuring their Puppy Cup representatives. Supporters can follow along as dogs “cheer on” their teams, celebrate match-day wins, and show off their

personalities both on and off the “field.”

Participating shelters include Houston Humane Society, BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions, Harris County Pets and many more Houston-area shelter partners.

The Puppy Cup is more than just a playful nod to soccer season, it’s an opportunity to shine a spotlight on adoptable pets across Houston while celebrating collaboration between local shelters. By combining community spirit with feel-good storytelling, the campaign aims to inspire engagement, increase adoption visibility, and create joyful moments throughout one of Houston’s biggest international events of the year.

Fans are encouraged to follow participating shelters, root for their favorite pups, and most importantly, help these deserving dogs find their forever homes.

FRESCUES OF HOUSTON SPCA

or more than 100 years, the Houston SPCA has responded to some memorable animal rescues. Here are a few notable ones by Texas’ largest Animal Cruelty Investigations team.

The rescue and protection organization stepped in to help 68 Bengal and Asian leopard cats, including a litter of four-weekold Bengal kittens, one dog and two domestic cats in Alvin, Texas. The Asian leopard cats were placed in sanctuaries while the Bengals were placed into new homes.

Imagine 191 animals living in deplorable conditions both inside and outside a Montgomery County home! The Houston SPCA rescued scores of dogs, cats, potbellied pigs, parakeets and cockatiels, rabbits, chickens and an iguana. They reunited a microchipped dog with his owner who said

he gave up the search for his beloved puppy two years prior.

Houston SPCA rescued more than 80 animals from a single property including 10 dogs, three horses, two snakes, one caiman, 52 cats and a calf found living on the second floor of the home. The calf, now affectionately named Atticus, has since found a happy home at Frances Farm where he is thriving.

They have also saved exotics from years of neglect and abuse including 11 bears, four tigers, four lions, two leopards, and a wolf. From dogs and cats, to exotics, wildlife and farm animals, the Houston SPCA’s mission has remained the same for a century: protecting animals in need and seeking justice on their behalf. Report animal cruelty to Houston SPCA at 713.869.SPCA or HoustonSPCA.org.

HOUSTON PET COLLECTIVE

What is Pet Collective?

Houston Pet Collective is a celebration of the pets and pet parents who make Houston such a special place. It shines a light on our city’s vibrant, pet-loving community and invites readers to be part of the story each month through rotating themes featured in both print and digital platforms. This month’s theme, Before and After Pet Rescue Stories, invites readers to submit their personal love story with their rescue pet.

Adele Koda

Adele was my foster dog. She was from a hoarding case in Grimes County. Both her legs on the left side required surgery. She couldn't walk.

She came to me the day one of my pets passed. I wasn't sure I was up to fostering. But I did. Still grieving my girl, I told Adele I couldn't love her. I could only like her. I didn't want to get attached.

I knew her stay was going to be lengthy. She needed multiple surgeries, PT and months of rehabilitation. She did great in her 8 months stay. Walking perfectly. On her last visit at Gulf Coast the doctor asked if i was keeping her. The answer was yes. She needed me to help heal her broken body and I needed her to heal my broken heart. She is now a therapy dog going out helping others in our community heal.

In March 2014, seven months before my wedding, I developed pain in my right big toe after an intense workout. Initially diagnosed as tendinitis, the pain worsened until I could no longer walk. After six months, eight doctors, and countless tests, I was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, a rare condition with no cure. I was told I might need a service dog, despite being terrified of dogs.

On November 22, 2014, I visited a Houston rescue to face my fear. There, I met Koda, a small, injured dog with heartworm and healing wounds. The moment I saw him, something shifted. I knew I needed to adopt him. As I cared for Koda through his recovery, something incredible happened; I began walking again. Over 11 years later, we remain inseparable. I’ve regained my health, lost my fear of dogs, and even fostered many. Koda didn’t just change my life-he gave it back.

HOUSTON DYNAMO

Houston Dynamo FC are in the midst of their 21st season in Major League Soccer and are looking to earn a postseason berth for the third time in four seasons under head coach Ben Olsen.

Led by President of Soccer Pat Onstad, alongside Olsen, the Dynamo compete with one of the most thrilling and dynamic squads in the league. The roster has plenty of international representation with 11 countries represented, including those in North America, South America, Europe and Africa. The squad is highlighted by Des-

ignated Players Mateusz Bogusz (Poland), Guilherme (Brazil) and Ezequiel Ponce (Argentina), who each bring a spark to the Dynamo attack. Dynamo fans also cheer on United States Men’s National Team midfielder Jack McGlynn and Mexican international legend Héctor Herrera at Shell Energy Stadium.

Since Houston’s inaugural 2006 season after relocating from San Jose, the Dynamo have won two MLS Cup championships, two U.S. Open Cup titles and four Conference Championships.

Fans can learn more about the team at HoustonDynamoFC.com.

Diesel with his pal, Boogie.

Diesel is the official mascot for the Houston Dynamo FC and Houston Dash, introduced on April 3, 2007. He is a friendly, orange fox who represents the team at home matches, community events, and through Diesel's Kids Club. Diesel can be requested for private events at HoustonDynamoFC.com.

Duane Holmes with Otto

Number: 14

Position: Midfielder

How did Otto “find” you?

The story of how Otto “found” us is a funny one. To keep it simple, my family went to view a litter, and he came up to us with poop on his nose, so we knew he was our guy.

What does Otto do to help you get ready for gameday?

He wakes me up in the morning to go on a walk, which allows me to get my blood flowing and stretch my legs.

If Otto played soccer, what position do you think he would play? He would definitely be a central midfielder because he is full of energy!

If you were to do a scouting report on Otto, what would be his strengths and weaknesses?

Strength would be that he can run all day for the team with a great engine and full of energy, while his weaknesses would be getting easily distracted by a bird flying by and chasing squirrels up a tree.

Out of all of the teams playing in the World Cup in Houston, what team are you most excited about and why?

Portugal! They are a great team, and obviously, Cristiano Ronaldo is likely going to play in his last World Cup, which would be cool to witness.

Lawrence Ennali with Bambi

Number: 11

Position: Forward

What does Bambi do to help you get ready for gameday?

In addition to morning walks to get moving, he also helps with my mental health as a professional athlete by distracting me with his playfulness and happy vibes. Just being himself helps me a lot because he is a young, crazy boy who likes to run around and play.

What is Bambi's favorite treat?

Dried bacon strips!

What position do you think Bambi would play as a soccer phenom?

He would definitely play left or right winger because he is fast, just like me, and enjoys chasing after balls. He not only catches balls with his mouth, but he also moves them around with his paws.

Jonathan Bond with Ivy and Levi Number: 31

Position: Goalkeeper

Give us a scouting report on Bambi as a player.

His strengths would definitely be speed, stamina, endurance, and fearlessness. He does not care how big other dogs are, and he just tries to play with everyone. On the other hand, his only weakness would be how easy it is for him to get distracted, but that is it. Now that I think about it, I guess Bambi is just me in dog form!

Who are you excited to watch in the World Cup?

Germany is the one that I am most excited about. That is an easy one for me, as that is my home country where I grew up, and I know a lot of the players who will hopefully be called up. I am very excited to see them play in Houston, and I hope I can secure some tickets!

How did Ivy and Levi “find” you?

The story of how our dogs “found” us is one that I am sure many people are familiar with. We decided to foster Ivy and Levi to keep them out of the homeless shelter. However, our family fell in love with them fairly quickly, so we decided to permanently adopt them.

What are their favorite treats?

Beef sticks!

If Ivy and Levi played soccer, what positions would they play? Ivy would be a No. 10 attacking midfielder because she is lazy but very smart. Levi would be a winger because he is quick and small but not the most clever. These descriptions do not necessarily reflect my opinion of my teammates, haha!

Tell us some strengths and weaknesses of your pups as soccer players.

Ivy’s strength would be anticipation of dropped food, while her weakness would be staying at competition weight. For Levi, his strengths would be his high energy and chasing tennis balls, while his weakness would that he is too nice, which could lead him to get out-competed.

What team are you looking forward to watching in the World Cup in Houston?

My family is most excited about Germany because that is where my wife is from. In terms of the entire World Cup, I will of course be rooting for England, which is my home country.

HOUSTON DASH

The Houston Dash return for their 13th season in the National Women’s Soccer League with their sights set on earning a postseason berth. In addition to earning points on the field, the team is dedicated to creating unforgettable matchday experiences for fans.

Led by President of Women’s Soccer Angela Hucles Mangano and head coach Fabrice Gautrat, the Dash continue to build one of the league’s most exciting and balanced squads. Rising talent like Kat Rader, Houston native Leah Klenke and midfielder Maggie Graham have injected new energy into the lineup, while a veteran core featuring captain Jane Camp-

bell, defender Avery Patterson and midfielder Paige Nielsen provide leadership and a winning pedigree.

Pet lovers should circle Sunday, Oct. 4 on their calendars, as the Dash will host their second annual Pups at the Pitch Night, presented by College Ave. This fan-favorite promotion invites fans to bring their dogs along for a one-of-a-kind soccer experience. From pup cups in the stands to photo-ready moments throughout the stadium, it’s a celebration of sport and the special bond between fans and their pets. For tickets and information, visit HoustonDash.com.

Avery Patterson with Benny

Number: 15

Position: Defender

Tell us about Benny.

In my rookie year, I was trying to discover things to do in Houston. A couple of the rookies and I would go to the shelter to walk dogs. One day, I took Benny for a walk and he wouldn’t leave me alone. He crawled into my lap and was a deadweight for the rest of the day. I went back and adopted him. He was an anchor, and he kind of still is.

What position would he play?

Benny would play the same position as me, a winger, and I honestly think he would take my spot on the team for sure. He is super quick, and I don’t think he would ever get tired. He would get back on defense and go forward as much as you asked him to.

Who runs the house?

Benny, for sure. He hits the blinds

of my balcony door whenever he needs to go out. I am on his schedule. He is my alarm clock.

If Benny could ask you a question, what would it be?

He would ask me to feed him more. Every time I pick him up from my mom and dad’s house over a break, like in December, he has gained at least 10 pounds. He begs for more and more food.

What are Benny's competitive strengths and weaknesses?

Strength would be speed. He's hard to catch at the dog park! You would have to hold a very low backline because he would be running in behind every time to chase anything, whether it was a ball or a squirrel.

His weakness would be the train outside of Shell Energy Stadium. He's very afraid of it!

Maggie Graham with Whiskey

Number: 19

Position: Midfielder

How did Whiskey become your sidekick?

My parents had a red Golden when they first got married and they named him Whiskey. He sadly passed away a lot earlier than expected, but they always had pictures of him all over the house. So, I always wanted a Golden and I adopted him at Christmas my senior year of college.

If Whiskey played soccer, what position would he play?

He’s super lazy. He'd want to do the least amount of running, maybe a goalkeeper or centerback.

Then again, he’s also scared of everything. If you kicked a ball at him, he would freak out. But he actually is good with the balls rolling around, using his little paws. So, I’m going to go with centerback. He’ll be a little tiki-taka centerback.

Jane Campbell with Powder Number: 1

Position: Goalkeeper

How did Powder “find” you?

A staff member found Powder on the highway in December of 2024. I was gifted her once we brought her in, and she’s been with me ever since.

How does Powder help you decompress after matches?

She doesn’t. She’s an alien sent from above, but she keeps me attentive. I will give her that.

What position would Powder play on a soccer team?

She would be on the bench, and she would be a player who complained about her playing time but never earned it.

What do you like most about Houston?

The food is amazing, and the

people in the city are fantastic. I love the diversity, and this city truly has everything to offer.

Is there any Houston pet business that you frequent that you would like to give a shout out to?

I want to give a shout out to my Rover, Christina. She is great! I also want to recognize K-9 Angels Rescue and Off The Grid Animal Sanctuary. I worked with them last year, and they do a lot to help find homes for stray dogs in the city.

What is Whiskey's favorite treat?

He loves cheese and pasta. When I make pasta, he goes absolutely nuts and waits for multiple noodles. He must have some.

What do you like the most about Houston?

I would probably say the food. I feel like there are so many good restaurants and so many great places to visit. You always have an option for anything you’re in the mood for. So, absolutely the food and coffee selection.

Out of all of the teams playing in the World Cup in Houston, what team are you most excited about?

The Netherlands are playing in Houston, and out of all the teams visiting the city, I think they will go the furthest in the tournament.

Sophia's Spotlight of Love

Hi sweet friends! Sophia here with a few summer safety reminders to keep tails wagging all season long. Make sure your pets always have cool, fresh water, and save walks and playtime for early mornings or evenings when it’s not so hot. Hot pavement can burn paws like mine, so always test the ground first. And please never leave pets in the car, even with the windows cracked, because cars heat up very fast. If your pets are near water, keep an eye on them, since not all furry friends can swim. Stay safe and have a pawsome summer!

WHEN FLIES FIND A WOUND

What Maggots Mean for Animals

Finding maggots in an animal’s wound can be shocking, but it is more common than many people realize, especially in warm, humid weather. Maggots are the larval stage of flies. Adult flies are attracted to moisture, odor, drainage, dead tissue, fecal material, urinesoaked fur, or open wounds. Once a fly lays eggs, those eggs can hatch quickly into tiny larvae that begin feeding in the area.

A fly’s life cycle is fairly simple: egg, larva, pupa, and adult fly. The maggot stage is the larval stage. In the right conditions, eggs may hatch within hours, which is why a small wound, skin infection, hot spot, or dirty area under matted fur can become a much bigger problem very quickly.

As unsettling as it may sound, maggots sometimes do a small amount of accidental cleanup at first by eating dead tissue. This is the same basic idea behind

medical-grade maggot therapy, which uses sterile, carefully selected larvae under veterinary (or medical) supervision. But an accidental infestation is not the same thing. Wild maggots are not controlled or sterile and can quickly transition from helping remove dead tissue to damaging healthy tissue, deepening the wound, and increasing the risk of serious infection.

Once maggots are present, the wound may become deeper or more contaminated than it appears from the outside. As the infestation progresses, maggots can cause pain, inflammation, tissue damage, odor, drainage, and significant distress. Pets may become weak, feverish, lethargic, or very painful in severe cases.

If you find maggots on your pet or stray animal, do not pour gasoline, kerosene, motor oil, bleach, insecticide, or harsh household chemicals on the wound. These substances can burn tissue, poison your pet, worsen the injury, and make treatment harder. Do not assume removing the visible maggots means the problem is solved, either; larvae can be hidden deep

in the wound or under the fur.

The safest first step is to visit your veterinarian or emergency hospital right away. Until the pet is seen, keep them indoors and away from flies. If they will allow it, you may gently cover the area with a clean towel or gauze, but do not pack the wound or apply chemicals. Veterinary treatment usually involves clipping the fur, removing larvae, flushing and cleaning the wound, assessing tissue damage, treating pain, and using antibiotics or other medications when needed.

Maggots are fairly common, especially in stray animals who have been wounded and exposed to the elements. Finding maggots in a wound does not mean the situation is hopeless, but it does mean the animal needs prompt medical care.

While they can sometimes be the most shocking part of a wound, maggots are aren’t the whole story. Once they are removed, our focus is shifted to the wound itself as we begin the process of providing the specialized care necessary for healing.

Every pet parent eventually notices the subtle shifts. Walks slow down. Mealtime excitement softens. Pets seek solitude more often. These small moments can raise gentle but heavy questions: Are they still finding joy in their days? Am I making the right choices for them? Could they be uncomfortable? These are the moments when guidance can make a huge impact.

WHAT IS A QUALITY-OFLIFE APPOINTMENT?

A quality-of-life appointment is a dedicated conversation focused on how your pet experiences daily life. How they move through their space, interact with family, rest, and find comfort and joy. Just as important, it supports the human side of the bond, acknowledging that caring for a beloved pet during uncertain times can feel overwhelming and lonely. These appointments slow things down, giving pet parents permission to

LEARNING HOW TO ASSESS QUALITY-OF-LIFE

One of the most helpful aspects of a quality-of-life appointment is learning how to assess your pet using simple, thoughtful tools. Pet parents may be guided in using easy checklists, quality of life assessments, or brief daily notes to track comfort, engagement, and patterns over time.

These tools reduce guilt by replacing guesswork with clarity. Instead of constantly questioning decisions, families gain confidence by seeing trends and knowing choices are guided by care and awareness rather than fear.

comfort, alignment, and support when decisions feel heavy.

Technicians may also offer practical dayto-day caregiving tips, including ways to adjust routines, improve comfort through simple environmental changes, and support rest, nourishment, and hydration.

IN-HOME QUALITY-OFLIFE APPOINTMENTS: COMPASSION IN A FAMILIAR SPACE

In-home appointments bring a veterinarian directly into your pet’s familiar environment. Pets remain comfortable, and families often feel more grounded discussing sensitive topics in spaces

GUIDANCE THROUGH GENTLE DISCUSSION

How Quality-of-Life Appointments Support Pets and Their People

pause, reflect, and talk openly about what they are seeing and feeling. Rather than reacting to one difficult day, the focus shifts to the bigger picture. During these conversations trained veterinary professionals help pet parents to also recognize caregiver fatigue. Feeling tired, sad, or uncertain does not mean love is fading. It means the bond runs deep.

VIRTUAL QUALITY-OFLIFE APPOINTMENTS: GUIDANCE FROM HOME

Virtual appointments take place by video call and are often guided by trained veterinary technicians who are highly skilled to listen and offer practical support. Because they happen remotely, pets remain relaxed, and families often feel more at ease during emotional conversations. Virtual visits also offer added flexibility. They are often easier to schedule, fit into busy caregiving routines, and allow family members near or far to participate together. This shared discussion can bring

filled with memories.

These visits can be especially meaningful when emotions are high or decisions feel closer, offering calm guidance and a sense of dignity.

A GENTLE PATH FORWARD

Quality of life appointments are not about pressure or timelines. They provide understanding, practical tools, and compassionate support to help pet parents plan thoughtfully and with confidence. With guidance and reflection, uncertainty becomes a path forward shaped by love, intention, and reassurance.

GROOM TEXAS IS BACK!

Competition, Education & Entertainment At the Houston World Series of Dog Shows In July

Groom Texas is bigger and better than ever. Held in conjunction with the Houston World Series of Dog Shows at NRG Center from July 15–19, Groom Texas has been bringing top educational seminars, grooming competitions, and industry leaders to Houston since 2017. And no — it’s not connected to the town of Groom.

This year, Groom Texas has been acquired by the Lone Star Mavens. Texas natives Robin Wilkins and Judi Cantu Thacker are bringing fresh energy to the event with new speakers, judges, and competitions designed to help groomers grow their skills and businesses.

Educational seminars will cover grooming techniques, business development, pet handling, coat and skin care, and more — everything pet professionals need to succeed in a fast-growing industry.

Competition highlights include the return of traditional breed confirmation grooming and Salon Freestyle, where groomers can showcase creative, stylish designs with extra flair.

Creative Styling is also back and expanded to include two levels of competition. A longtime Sunday favorite, the event showcases artistic grooming designs that continue to impress both groomers and pet owners alike.

New this year is the Model Dog Competition, where groomers can style plush dog mannequins in traditional, Asian Fusion, or creative designs. It’s an ideal entry point for groomers who want competition experience before stepping into the main contest ring.

Another addition is the Abstract Runway Competition, which takes creative styling to the next level with embellished designs featuring sparkles, rhinestones, and runway-worthy presentation.

The Duo Competition brings even more fun, with teams of two grooming one

dog while adding their own creative spin to the challenge. Contestants can even try to “bribe” the judges. Social media creators Marcia Strong and Houston’s own Michelle Caluneo will judge the event.

Groom Texas is also offering Pet Tech CPR Certification classes covering CPR for cats and dogs, choking response, pet first aid, and important health and safety practices for pet professionals.

Evening events include a Thursday pool party, a Friday night hoedown, and a Saturday evening celebration featuring the Texas Legends Awards and Best in Show.

15 YEARS OF PEACE LOVE DOGS

A Dog's Favorite Place. An Owner's Peace of Mind.

Fifteen years ago, I started Peace Love Dogs to help people train their dogs. I believed in doing things the right way — structure, consistency, and clear communication between dog and owner. And I still believe in that.

But if I'm honest, I didn't fully understand back then what people were really looking for. Because if you love your dog, you know the feeling. You're dropping them off — maybe for the day, maybe for a trip, maybe just for grooming — and there's always that moment: are they really going to be okay here? And honestly, that question never really left me.

I remember those early days, doing everything I could to make sure every dog was cared for the

right way, while also figuring it all out as I went. There were definitely moments where I wasn't sure we were getting everything right yet.

In the beginning, we focused on training — helping dogs behave better and helping owners feel more in control. That foundation matters. It always will. But our clients showed me something bigger. They didn't just want a trained dog. They wanted to feel at peace when they left them. They wanted to know their dog was safe, but also known and loved. That someone understood their personality. That they weren't just another dog in the building.

And that changed everything.

Peace Love Dogs didn't grow overnight. We opened in 2011 with

training and daycare. In 2018, we were able to purchase the property next door and expand to include lodging and grooming. And over

fifteen years, we've had the privilege of serving more than 15,000 families. It evolved — by listening, by learning, and by caring deeply

Anna Foster, Owner, Peace Love Dogs

about getting it right.

Today, we've become something more than I originally set out to build. A place where dogs come to learn, to play, to stay, and to be cared for — through training, daycare, lodging, and grooming. But what matters most to me is that the feeling has stayed the same. It's the dog that runs inside without hesitation. It's the owner who no longer feels that weight when they leave. It's the consistency of knowing what to expect, every single time. It's the little things that most people don't see, but always feel.

That kind of trust isn't built through marketing. It's built over time. It's built by a team that shows up every day and genuinely cares. People who chose this work because they love it — not just dogs, but the families behind them. Who take the time to know each dog's personality, their quirks, what makes them nervous and what makes them light up. Who hold themselves to a standard even when no one is watching.

I'm incredibly proud of the people we've built this with. They are the heartbeat of this place. It's built by clients who trust us with something deeply important to them. Families who started with a nervous puppy and are still with us years later. Who send their friends, their neighbors, their family members — because trust, once earned, gets shared. We have clients who have been part of the Peace Love Dogs community for over a decade, and that kind of loyalty humbles me every single time.

This place exists because of them just as much as anything we've done. Fifteen years in, I'm proud. Proud of what we've built. Proud of the people behind it. And truly grateful for every single person who has trusted us along the way.

We're still growing. Still learning. Still building. Because I believe dog care can be better — more thoughtful, more intentional, and more centered around both the dog and the owner. And that's what we're continuing to create.

From my heart – thank you for being part of this. Your trust means the world to us, and we never take it for granted.

Conservation Corner

Golden Years, Cutting-Edge Care

As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo. This issue, we highlight how technology helps care for animals at the Houston Zoo. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

From small and furry to long and scaly, Houston Zoo’s veterinarian team is now able to elevate the world-class care it provides to all its animals well into their senior years with the new CT machine. For older animals like Florence, the Zoo’s twenty-one-year-old green anaconda, the addition of imaging technology is a non-invasive tool that minimizes animal stress while maximizing diagnostic precision, reinforcing the Zoo’s commitment to exceptional medical care.

Florence is the third largest snake at the Zoo and recently underwent a routine senior wellness exam that now includes CT imaging. At 13 feet, 6 inches long, her care team had to get creative to ensure she fit into the machine. While Florence’s exam is routine,

it’s a critical part of the Zoo’s proactive approach in caring for aging animals. Thanks to the Zoo’s new advanced technology, veterinary staff were able to capture highly detailed images of the anaconda’s internal structures, providing invaluable insight without the need to take animals off grounds to a referral clinic for this advanced imaging. Results showed Florence is in excellent condition for her age and well beyond the typical lifespan of her species in the wild. This proactive, in-depth care not only ensures Florence’s continued wellbeing but also contributes valuable knowledge to the field of reptile medicine. Reptiles are incredibly resilient, but they can also mask signs of illness. This technology allows the team to detect potential

issues earlier and ensure animals, like Florence, remain comfortable and thriving well into their golden years.

Every visit to the Houston Zoo helps save wild anacondas in South America. A portion of each Zoo ticket and membership directly supports the Zoo’s conservation partner, Instituto de Conservação de Animais Silvestres (ICAS). Their community fire brigade works in the Pantanal in Brazil to prevent and combat wildfires that threaten the critical wetlands where anacondas live. By protecting this habitat, ICAS helps ensure wild anacondas and other species can survive and thrive.

ASPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

What types of clients do you typically work with, and how do you tailor your approach to meet their unique financial goals?

We work with a diverse range of clients, including high-net-worth individuals and families, business owners, and institutions. With all clients we strive to truly understand their specific needs so that we can develop tailored strategies unique to their situation. We also emphasize ongoing relationships and regularly refine each plan to reflect changes in life circumstances, market conditions, and long-term objectives.

What are some common financial mistakes you see people make, and how can they avoid them?

As advisors who work with families across a wide range of financial situations, we see the same mistakes show up repeatedly, and they are almost always preventable.

Not having a plan: A comprehensive financial plan isn't just an investment portfolio: it accounts for your goals, taxes, estate planning, insurance, and even care costs.

Ignoring taxes until it's too late. Tax planning is year-round work, not a once-a-year event in April.

Letting emotion drive investment decisions.

The instinct to act during volatility in the market is one of the most reliable ways to erode wealth over time.

Don't wait for a crisis to get organized. The families we see navigate life's curveballs best are the ones who planned ahead.

How does Goodman Financial approach building long-term relationships and trust with clients?

As a fee-only fiduciary, every recommendation is made with the clients' best interests in mind. That foundation is strengthened through consistent, personalized service and a focus on engaging not just today's clients, but the next generation of their families. Wealth management, in GFC's view, is not a transaction — it's a lifelong partnership built on transparency, integrity, and genuine care.

For someone just starting to invest, what are the first steps you recommend to build a strong foundation?

For someone just starting to invest, the most important thing is to build good habits early. Start with a clear understanding of what you are saving for, then create a plan that helps you stay consistent over time. A strong foundation is less about finding the perfect

investment and more about saving regularly, staying diversified, and avoiding the urge to chase what is popular in the moment. Time is one of a new investor’s greatest advantages, so starting early and sticking with a thoughtful plan can make a meaningful difference over the long term.

How can pet owners plan financially for both expected and unexpected pet-related expenses?

Building routine costs like food, grooming, annual vet visits, and medications into your monthly budget can help, while setting aside additional savings in your emergency fund for unexpected illnesses or accidents can provide added peace of mind. Pet insurance may be worth exploring for extra protection, and tools like the CareCredit credit card can help with larger surprise expenses. A little planning ahead can go a long way in helping ensure your pets receive the care they need without creating unnecessary financial stress.

What sets Goodman Financial apart from other financial firms in the Houston area?

We are 100% employee-owned and have built a firm culture centered around philanthropy, intellectual curiosity, and always doing what is right. We have been a fee-only firm since inception, ensuring every decision we make is in the best interest of our clients. We also have numerous CPAs on our team, so tax efficiency is woven into every aspect of our financial planning process.

Tell us how Goodman Financial supports pets in our community.

Goodman Financial has run several drives for various local rescues in need. Our most recent drive was for the Rescued Pets Movement. The firm also gives each employee $1,000 each year to donate to a cause of their choice, and every year there are numerous pet rescue organizations selected.
