What a cool milestone we all get to celebrate in 2026! As we step into this year of patriotic celebrations, I’m excited to share our annual double issue for January/February, created in commemoration of America’s semiquincentennial coming in July. You’ll notice our cover looks both familiar and brand-new. The original photo of my rescue horse proudly draped in the American flag was our July 2020 cover. It’s always been one of those images that stayed with me: bold, hopeful, and unmistakably American. This year felt like the perfect time to revisit it. With a little creative magic, we transformed it into a rich collage featuring Lady Liberty, the American Flag and the Constitution. And with the horse, we pay homage to our nation’s past and the animals who’ve walked alongside us through every chapter.

That theme carries into our cover story, where we explore the remarkable roles animals have played in the American journey.

From the loyal companions that settled the prairies, to the horses and dogs that served during the Revolutionary War, to the many presidential pets who’ve trotted across the White House lawn, animals have shaped our history in ways big and small. We also honor the brave military canines and equines who continue to protect and serve today. To help you get into the spirit, we’ve also included some events both near and far coming up throughout the year.

Also in this issue, you’ll meet the winner and finalists of our 12 Days of Petmas Photo Contest, sponsored by our friends at VERGI 24/7 Emergency Hospital. These festive and funny photos brought us so much joy during

t a time of year when you might be thinking about COLD, I'm thinking about HOT. I love hot things … hot chocolate (the beverage), hot chocolate (the band who sang You Sexy Thing), fried jalapeños, hot fudge, fireplaces (the birthplace of romance), lava lamps, cinnamon, dry ice, Puerto Rico and double chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven. Those are my preferred hot items but there is something else that I think is Super Hot …

Toro. Yes, I'm bullish on Toro the Texans Mascot, and other than the time I was arrested at NRG Stadium for trying to sneak into the locker room disguised as a Texans Cheerleader (apparently my "physique" gave me away as stated by the ill-bred officer) for a meet-n-greet with my favorite horned Houstonian, I have kept my deep infatuation sub rosa.

However, recent events have made my feelings sub vino: Toro was just inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame.

Yes, our high-flying hottie will be eternally famous.

I have tried to spend some time contemplating my attraction. I mean, it would not be acceptable in the pack I run with to "play" with a "fully equipped version" of the male species but for him, I’ll break the rules. In my analysis for why he makes my tail wag, I gave thought to the following: 1. His birthday is late April, making him a Taurus, symbolized by the Bull.

Interesting how that worked out. I am a Libra, which is a romantic match for Taurus, given both signs are ruled by Venus, the goddess of Love. I find this to be sound reasoning.

2. He is darkskinned. I have always had an attraction to Rottweilers and Black Labs so I'm thinking it's the "big, dark and handsome" theory.

3. Those horns say ‘confidence.’ Also possibly ‘structural support.’ Either way, I’m down.

4. Who couldn't love a man with his own kid's club? He's a tough guy and a sensitive guy.

Kind of like sweet and salty.

Lethal combination.

5. I like my men the way I like my chew toys: durable, dramatic, and slightly dangerous.

Well, I could go on and on about why I'm HOT for Toro, but what I really need to do is concentrate on getting him to requite his love for me. I know that food is the first way to a man's heart but since I'm prone to eating any food before I can offer it to another, I thought a poem would be a good alternative: Toro, Toro I knew you were mine The first time I sniffed your behind Your horns caught my eye I'm not sure why I just find you so devine Watching you pump up the fans As you run and wave your hands With your horns so proud And your cheers so loud With you I want lifetime plans

You don't know me well but when you do I'm sure you will see I have good qualities too Like long lashes and wet kisses Perfect to be your Mrs's To you I will be forever true I also love a good Texans game With a hot dog and pizza to fill my frame I'll bake you sweet things And cheer for Super Bowl rings In me you'll find the perfect dame One final thought that seeped through my love fog That I shared with fans on my blog Together as husband and wife We would have a wonderful life Producing our love child - a bulldog.

he ballroom at the Post Oak Hotel was packed with over 680 animal lovers gathered for Studio 39 Saturday, November 15 for the Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) Celebrity Paws Gala raising a record breaking $1,100,000 to help the animals.

Co-chairs Angela Hernandez and Kamisha Mickey led the successful efforts. The funds raised will provide for many more animals that CAP will be able to shelter, rescue, and place for adoption with loving families. Proceeds included sales of raffle tickets for a 2025 Subaru BRZ Premium World Rally in Blue Pearl generously donated by West Houston Subaru.

The Studio 39 theme was generated as this was the 39th year for the gala. Two popular spots for guests were the ice bars sponsored by Sire Spirits, as guests sipped on Branson Cognac espresso martinis and Le Chemin du Roi champagne.

Andy Cerota, who was the 2024 Celebrity Pet Champion of the Year winner, led the evening as emcee. Awards were presented to thank the Honorary Chairs for all of their support, Ben Ackerley and Daphne and Steve Savva. Other awards were presented to Meghan and Clint Conroy CAP Cherished Companions, Mary Kenner Heart of Gold, Brian Spack Hall of Fame, and Edna MeyerNelson Melcher Humanitarian of the Year.

Unique action items included a first time ever private Champagne tour for four through France’s legendary Champagne region, hosted by Sire Spirits—the creators of Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s award-winning Le Chemin du Roi, as well as a dinner hosted by Frances and Tony Buzbee with Former Governor Rick Perry and his wife Anita. hefs For Paws 2026 is shaping up to be a heart-warming evening where great food and a great cause come together in true Houston style. Benefiting Rescued Pets Movement, this beloved annual fundraiser will take place on January 18, 2026, beginning at 5pm, at the stunning Penthouse at POST HTX in downtown Houston.

The event features a seated, multi-course dinner created by some of Houston’s most talented chefs, all generously donating their time and skills to help save homeless and at-risk pets. s America gears up to celebrate its 250th birthday in 2026, we wanted to unleash a special issue dedicated to the furry, feathered, and four-legged friends who’ve helped shape our nation. After all, you can’t tell the story of America without telling the story of its animals. From loyal working dogs who stood watch beside soldiers to the adventurous pups who’ve hiked our national parks long before “pet-friendly” was part of our everyday vocabulary, animals have been right there with us, forging their own place in history.

In this spirited patriotic spread, we’re shining a bright red-white-and-blue spotlight on their contributions. Our “Heroes on 4 Legs” feature honors the courageous military dogs,

service animals, and first-responder partners whose dedication has woven itself into the fabric of America’s story. For the explorers at heart, we’ve rounded up some of the most pet-friendly national parks where you and your sidekick can celebrate the semiquincentennial with a hike, a sniff, and a selfie under the stars.

We’re also taking a playful trot through the past with a look at Presidential pets who once roamed the halls of the White House, proving that even world leaders need a cuddle buddy.

Of course, we also cannot feature how proud we are of the USA without a shoutout to a patriotic shopping section. The products are made in America and we hope you will shop local with our partners and find fun toys or

s America celebrates its 250th birthday, we honor not just the human heroes who shaped this nation, but also the remarkable animals who stood beside them on battlefields, in disaster zones, at the front lines of public safety, and even in quiet moments of healing. These four-legged patriots have served the United States with courage, loyalty, and an unwavering spirit that transcends time. From the Revolutionary War to today’s modern military and first-responder units, their contributions tell a powerful story of partnership and patriotism.

REVOLUTIONARY ROOTS

When the United States was still a fragile new nation, horses and dogs helped sustain the American fight for independence. Horses were indispensable during the Revolutionary War, moving troops and supplies, carrying messages, and giving commanders (including George Washington himself), the mobility and vantage point needed to lead. Washington was so devoted to his animals that he personally returned a lost terrier to British General William Howe during a ceasefire, showing an early sign that even amid conflict, the bond between

humans and animals was universal.

Dogs also played smaller but meaningful roles: guarding camps, controlling vermin, and providing comfort during an era when morale could be as important as manpower.

THE WORLD AT WAR

By World War I, America formally recognized the value of military dogs. One of the earliest heroes was Sergeant Stubby, a small mixed breed who became the most decorated dog of the war. Stubby warned soldiers of gas attacks, located wounded men, and even captured an enemy spy. His devotion earned him a place in American legend.

World War II saw the official establishment of the U.S. Army K9 Corps. More than 10,000 dogs served including scouts, sentries, mes-

ANIMALS ON THE PRAIRIE How Animals Helped Build the American Frontier

ong before the modern comforts of fenced yards, stainless steel water bowls, and cozy dog beds, animals played a vital role in helping settlers survive on the American frontier. In honor of the amazing milestone of 250 years, we look back at the loyal companions, both pets and working animals, who shaped daily life in the colonies, across the prairies, and the expanding West.

BEFORE THERE WAS A FRONTIER

Long before settlers arrived, Indigenous peoples forged powerful relationships with animals. Dogs served as camp guards, hunting partners, and even carriers who pulled travois loaded with supplies. Many tribes developed

Some breeds have become synonymous with service. German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois excel in military and police work due to their intelligence, agility, and fearless focus. Labrador Retrievers are top choices for detection, therapy, and search-and-rescue missions because of their friendly temperament and keen noses. Bloodhounds remain unmatched in tracking, while Golden Retrievers shine in emotional-support roles thanks to their calm, comforting nature. I

n 2026, there’s no better moment to reflect on one of the country’s most heartfelt traditions: pet adoption. Across generations, Americans have woven compassion for animals into the fabric of our national identity.

From the earliest humane societies to today’s vibrant rescue networks, the U.S. has cultivated a uniquely American spirit of opening our homes and hearts to pets in need.

The story begins in the late 19th century, when the first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was founded in New York City in 1866. By the early 1900s, communities nationwide launched their own humane societies, establishing the modern shelter movement. These early pioneers championed animal welfare long before it became mainstream, setting the stage for sweeping change in the decades to come. In the 1970s and 1980s, grass roots rescue groups emerged across the country, sparking the rise of foster networks, spay-and-neuter campaigns, and national adoption events that have since saved millions of lives.

Houston has played a remarkable role in shaping this modern rescue culture. Local organizations, such as Houston SPCA, Houston Humane Society, Rescued Pets Movement, Citizens For Animal Protection, along with countless foster-based groups, have become

models of innovation and impact. Houston rescues frequently partner with national transport programs to relocate at-risk dogs and cats to regions with higher adoption demand.

In many cases, pets rescued from Houston streets have found forever homes as far away as Colorado, the Pacific Northwest, and even Canada. This outward-looking spirit captures what makes the city a powerhouse in the national rescue community: big hearts, bigger collaboration, and a belief that every pet deserves a chance, no matter how long the odds.

As America approaches its semiquincentennial, Houston rescues are embracing the milestone in a more reflective way by highlighting the stories that show how deeply adoption is woven into our shared culture.

Throughout 2026, many local groups plan to spotlight “American Love Stories” of pets and their people: veterans who found healing through rescue dogs, immigrant families who made a newly adopted cat part of their

American dream, seniors whose foster pets brought joy and purpose, and children learning compassion by welcoming a shelter pup into the family.

Pet adoption isn’t just a feel-good act, rather, it’s a living expression of the values that have shaped our nation for 250 years: compassion, community, and the belief that we can build a better future together. And here in Houston, that love story is still being written … one wagging tail and innocent paw at a time.

The very first location, affectionately called The Shelter, was a small house at 216 Jackson Hill Street with no running water, air conditioning or heat with an outhouse described in archives as ‘leaky.’ Help for animals in need at that time included horses, sheep, cats and dogs. It was from those humble beginnings that the Houston SPCA evolved through the years to become a pioneer in animal rescue and protection in the Gulf Coast region and beyond. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a cross-country road trip, these parks offer trails, viewpoints, stargazing, wildlife sightings, and unforgettable memories. As we honor 250 years of American spirit, pack your map, leash up your pup, and get ready for a patriotic adventure outdoors.

Remote and unforgettable, Big Bend is an eight-hour drive from Houston and showcases some of Texas’ most dramatic desert scenery.

Dogs aren’t allowed on trails, but they are welcome in campgrounds, paved areas, scenic

About eleven hours from Houston, White Sands is a stunning destination for a longer weekend road trip. Dogs are welcome on trails, dunes, and picnic areas, making it one of the most pet-friendly landscapes in the Southwest. Here, miles of white gypsum sand stretch like waves across the desert. Soft and cool beneath your feet, even in heat, it’s gentle on paws and perfect for leashed exploration.

When these canine heroes finish their duty, Mission K9 Rescue ensures they receive the retirement, care, and honor they have earned. Founded in 2013, Mission K9 is committed to one purpose: saving our nation’s working dogs.

Mission K9 is a Texas-based nonprofit dedicated to rescuing, reuniting, rehoming, rehabilitating, and repairing retired Military Working Dogs, Contract Working Dogs, Police K9s, and other global working dogs. Many have deployed multiple times, survived harsh environments, or spent years protecting American personnel overseas. Their loyalty never

wavered, and Mission K9 ensures that loyalty is repaid.

The organization brings retired dogs home from around the world, including the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Asia. These transports require extensive veterinary testing, strict regulations, and complex logistics. Mission K9 personally escorts many dogs back to the United States to ensure their journey home is safe and humane.

Once stateside, each dog receives medical evaluations, behavioral assessments, and the time they need to decompress. Some require orthopedic surgeries, dental work, or rehabilitation after years of demanding service. Others simply need a soft bed and a caring family after a lifetime of concrete kennels.

Mission K9 also specializes in reuniting retired dogs with the handlers they served beside. These moments are emotional, patriotic, and deeply meaningful. They honor the canine’s service and the bond formed through training, deployment, and shared responsibility.

The organization relies entirely on donations to make these missions possible. Ninetythree cents of every dollar goes directly to the dogs’ care, transportation, and medical needs.

One of Mission K9’s most memorable reunions brought together Air Force handler Kirsten and her retired Military Working Dog, Sofi C147. Sofi was Kirsten’s last partner before Kirsten’s assignment to Korea, and the two shared a close and trusted bond. After time apart, Mission K9 transported Sofi from California, cared for her in Texas, and then escorted her overseas so she could be reunited with Kirsten. Sophie was overjoyed to see her again, and their reunion showed exactly why bringing these dogs home to their handlers remains such an important part of Mission K9’s mission.

Mount Rush Hour at Houston’s American Statesmanship Park While we are on the subject of Houston and American history, we can’t go without mentioning "Mount Rush Hour,” located at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Interstate 45. You’ve probably no doubt seen this very cool artwork, but if not, put it on your list of to-do’s. Formally known as American Statesmanship Park, the park has a series of four 18foot, two-ton busts depicting Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, Abraham Lincoln, and George Washington. The sculptures, known as A Tribute to American Statesmanship, were created in 2008 and donated to Harris County in November 2012 by artist David Adickes.

AMERICAN STATESMANSHIP PARK SERVICE DOG WAR MEMORIAL IN HOUSTON

In 2012, more than 1,500 people gathered to dedicate the Fallen Warriors Memorial, a heartfelt tribute to the Texas men and women who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks. Created from the vision of Cheryl Whitfield, founder of the National Memorial Ladies, the memorial was funded through generous public donations and support from Cy-Champ PUD. A second tribute followed in 2019, with the dedication of the Service Dog Memorial. The memorial features life-size bronze sculptures by renowned Texas artist Edd Hayes. One statue depicts Bretagne, a Golden Retriever who worked tirelessly at the World Trade Center site after 9/11. The other honors CPL Eli, a black Labrador who served as a bomb-sniffing dog in Afghanistan alongside Marine LCPL Colton Rusk, who was tragically killed in action.

Both memorials stand together in the scenic Cy-Champ Park, funded primarily

by Cy-Champ PUD and supported by the community. They serve as lasting reminders of courage, sacrifice, and devotion, be it human or canine. The memorial is located at 14619 Cutten Road.

Sculptor Edd Hayes - Edd Hayes is a renowned Texas sculptor, famous for his realistic, monumental bronze works capturing the spirit of the American West, cowboys, and Texas heritage. He was named the Official Texas State Sculptor in 1999 and created iconic pieces like "Wild and Free" at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and "The Champ" for the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. You can also find Edd’s work in College Station with his "Aggie Spirit" sculpture honoring Texas A&M’s bonfire tradition and in Katy, with "The Landing”, a monument to Katy, Texas's geese population, among other great works.

s the United States celebrates its 250th birthday, it’s the perfect moment to explore the pets and companion animals that have become state symbols.

Some states officially designate a dog; others embrace heritage breeds that reflect their unique culture, history, and landscape. Together, these animals offer a fun and meaningful portrait of America’s diversity.

State animals aren’t chosen randomly. They represent pride, tradition, and the special relationship between people and the animals that helped shape local life. In many cases, the story of a state’s pet is also the story of the community that claimed it.

REGIONAL REFLECTIONS

In the Northeast, the choices are tied closely to history. Massachusetts’ Boston Terrier, often called “The American Gentleman,” is one of the first U.S.-developed breeds and still embodies New England charm. Travel farther west and the symbols become rugged and bold. The Alaskan Malamute represents the endurance required to thrive in the far north, where these dogs once hauled freight and guided explorers through icy terrain. The plant enjoys sunlight and well-drained soil so keep that in mind when selecting your location (in the garden or indoor container). Keep the soil of seedlings lightly moist but not soggy. Mix some compost

into the soil at the time of planting to give your catnip a boost. Catnip is a self-pollinating plant.

It will attract bees and other pollinators to the garden. Harvest catnip when it’s in bloom. You may harvest an entire plant or just cut some stems which can be hung upside down in a warm, dark, well-ventilated area until they are dry. At thap point, the leaves and flowers can be stripped from the stem and stored in a sealed container or sewn into handmade cat toys. Voila - happiness for you and kitty!

Scientists Find Raccons My Be Headeding Toward Domestication Could raccoons be quietly falling in love with life alongside us? Scientists studying “domestication syndrome” think so. For centuries, people noticed that animals growing tamer around humans often develop sweeter features— shorter snouts, smaller heads, floppy ears, even adorable white patches. In 2014, evolutionary biologists discovered these charm-boosting traits all trace back to special embryonic cells called neural crest cells. When these cells grow a bit differently, animals may end up not only looking cuter but feeling calmer, too. For raccoons already sneaking into our backyards and hearts, this shift could make coexisting even easier. So this Valentine’s Day, don’t be surprised if those masked bandits seem a little more smitten—with snacks, with safety, and maybe just a little with us.

Silent Suffering Dental Problems Pets Are Masters at Hiding

W

hen it comes to our pet’s health, we typically think about vaccinations, nutrition, grooming, and exercise. But dental care is a frequently overlooked aspect of pet wellness yet one of the most common medical conditions affecting companion animals that goes unnoticed until it is advanced. This is because animals are experts at hiding discomfort. I call Conditions such as periodontal disease and tooth resorption the “silent killer” because they cause problems that are not overtly obvious to the pet parents causing pets to suffer in silence.

Periodontal disease is estimated to affect up to 70% of pets by the age of three. It starts when plaque mineralizes into tartar and firmly adheres to the tooth surface. Now plaque bacteria proliferate even more on the surface and under the gumline; a biofilm is created.

This high bacteria load triggers the immune system to respond by sending substances that cause inflammation (cytokines and prostaglandins) to the mouth. This causes the gums to become red, swollen, and tender (gingivitis).

Without treatment, this progresses to destruction of the tissues surrounding the tooth, including bone, leading to gingival recession, periodontal pocketing, and eventually tooth loss. This process can be uncomfortable for your pet and lead to chronic pain.

The earliest signs may be subtle starting with mild bad breath or tartar accumulation.

But the bacteria are already hard at work beneath the gumline causing the inflammation and infection. Not only does periodontal disease damage the oral tissues but the bacteria can also be transported to the heart, liver, and kidneys via the bloodstream through microcracks in the gums. So what looks like a mild case of bad breath can signal a more serious underlying problem. When pets are affected with periodontal disease, they won’t scream out in pain, they quietly adapt – chewing on one side, eating more slowly, or avoiding hard treats. Many owners will interpret these changes as signs of aging rather than think oral disease as a cause.

Cats face their own unique tooth condition called tooth resorption. This is a condition

where their bodies signal certain cells to start destroying tooth structure which causes holes in their teeth. This is very painful, but they continue to act normal and often give no signs of discomfort. YOU’VE HEARD OF KENNEL COUGH I

… But Have You Heard of CIRDC?

f you know kennel cough, the answer is yes. Veterinary medicine made a move away from the term “kennel cough” to CIRDC (Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex) to reflect what we actually see: a complex mix of viruses and bacteria that can all cause the familiar coughing and additional respiratory symptoms.

Kennel cough (often associated with Bordetella, a contagious bacterium spread through airborne droplets and shared surfaces) has long been recognized as a very specific, easily recognized illness known for that dry, honking cough dogs sometimes develop after boarding, daycare, puppy training, or dog-park visits.

To help prevent kennel cough, vaccines were developed for both Bordetella and parainfluenza virus, since they were the

known main causes.

Over time, however, it became clear that kennel cough wasn’t that simple.

Researchers began identifying multiple bacterial and viral pathogens responsible for respiratory illness in coughing dogs, and the broader term -CIRDC- was born.

WHY DOGS STILL GET SICK DESPITE VACCINATION

Vaccines remain an important part of prevention, but they can’t block every pathogen in the complex. Vaccines can protect against bacterial causes like Bordetella bronchiseptica and viral causes like parainfluenza or canine influenza however, there are many causes of CIRDC that vaccines cannot protect against. And just like in humans, sometimes a vaccine

Doxycycline is the drug of choice for CIRDC bacterial infections, and viral infections that become bacterial in nature (and is often used prophylactically to prevent the secondary bacterial infection.) While doxycycline can’t fight viruses, it helps prevent or control secondary bacterial infections.

Doxycycline’s effectiveness against key bacterial pathogens often involved in CIRDC, its ability to penetrate respiratory tissues, and its anti-inflammatory properties make it a great choice when CIRDC symptoms are present, and can also help prevent minor cases from developing into a much more serious pneumonia.

Doxycycline is tetracycline antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the bacterial ribosome and stopping it from producing the proteins it needs to survive and multiply. It also allows the immune system to work: Once bacteria can no longer grow, the body’s immune system can more effectively fight and clear the infection.

Veterinary guidance is key: A veterinarian will determine if doxycycline is appropriate based on the dog’s symptoms and the risk of secondary bacterial infection.

WORDS OF WISDOM

If your dog begins coughing shortly after interacting with other dogs, schedule a visit with your regular veterinarian.

Thankfully, with immediate care, most dogs make a full recovery. If your dog unknowingly exposed others, and you have a method of contacting their humans, please do so. Early intervention truly can prevent serious illness and may even save a life.

through a health screening similar to people. If they meet the criteria, they can potentially donate! We can obtain a number of products from a single donation. There’s whole blood, which contains ALL components of blood (whole); packed red blood cells (pRBC’s) - only the red blood cell portion; plasma – liquid component of blood; and platelets. We can use these products in different ways, but one donation saves up to 3 lives! Amazing, right?!

guy was very sick. He was suffering from parvovirus, a common viral disease in puppies, and hookworm anemia, which is caused by a parasite. Parvovirus alone can be deadly, but along with his anemia, we had to act quickly. Among other treatments, this pup needed an emergency blood transfusion.

It was Stella’s time to shine! She was next on the donor list; I brought her in for collection, and she donated whole blood. A typical donation usually includes light sedation, belly rubs, and snacks. What she didn’t know was that she would be saving her new brother. We watched as the staff worked their mag-

ic with Stella’s “Superhero” blood. What had been an extremely sick puppy became a fully recovered Sherlock (that’s what we named him) who was able to come home about a week later. Stella and Sherlock have been inseparable for 8 years now! The sassy older sister with her annoying, lively “baby” brother.

Sherlock is still “too smart” for his own good. Though he is technically an old man now, he still acts like a puppy. I credit his sister’s “Superhero” donation. It’s not every day that a pet is able to donate to a housemate! Stella continued in the program, saving many other lives and even earning “Gallon Club” status when she retired from Blood Bank at age 8. Stella is everyone’s favorite big sister, hero, and best friend.

Many people don’t know that there is a shortage of canine and feline blood products in the United States. Try as we might, there is not enough supply to sustain current demands. CHINESE YEAR OF THE HORSE Freedom, Endurance & Spirit As we trot into 2026, marking the Chinese Year of the Horse, I can’t help but feel a bit of personal joy. As the caretaker of two rescued horses who changed my life, this year’s symbolism resonates deeply with me. The Chinese zodiac cycles every twelve years, and each animal carries with it a distinct energy. The horse represents speed, freedom, endurance, and an almost boundless spirit. Those born in the Year of the Horse are said to be lively, independent, and unafraid to take bold strides into the unknown. I see that same bright spark in my two boys, Freedom and Apache.

But the horse means far more than a zodiac symbol. Humanity’s relationship with horses spans thousands of years, and I believe the profound partnership between our species is one of the great love stories of history. Horses have carried warriors into battle, explorers across continents, farmers, through long days in the fields, and families from town to town before engines ever

existed. Even in our modern world, horses continue to serve—now not as necessities, but as companions, teachers, and healers.

Both of my horses came into my life through rescue organizations, each having been neglected and abandoned. Yet despite the hardships they faced, they approached their new life with a kind of gentle curiosity.

Working with them reminded me daily that horses read our hearts better than we do. They ask for presence, honesty, and patience—traits that improve not only our horsemanship but our humanity.

Beyond the personal, horses offer therapeutic benefits to people with physical, emotional, and developmental challenges.

Equine-assisted therapy has helped veterans manage PTSD, supported children with autism in building communication skills, and given countless individuals a renewed sense of confidence. Their intuitive nature and calming presence make them remarkable partners in healing.

As 2026 unfolds, I’m inviting our readers—whether you share your home with a dog, cat, rabbit, or one of the larger companions like

mine—to celebrate the horse. Celebrate its symbolism, its history, its contribution, and its heart. The Year of the Horse encourages movement, courage, and hope. Conservation Corner As appreciative supporters of nature and wildlife, we at Houston PetTalk want to promote education and conservation of the world’s animal population. Each month we bring you information on conservation efforts that are of special interest or have some connection to Houston through the Houston Zoo. This issue, we highlight whooping cranes. Look for other upcoming conservation stories so that you too can help save a species.

T

he whooping crane is the rarest crane species in the world. Once found across much of North America, these striking white birds were nearly driven to extinction in the early 1900s due to overhunting and widespread habitat loss. By 1941, only 21 whooping cranes remained in the wild.

Thanks to decades of dedicated conservation efforts, including habitat restoration and reintroduction programs, the population has rebounded to more than 800 individuals today. While this recovery is remarkable, whooping cranes are still listed as endangered and continue to face serious threats such as habitat loss, pollution, illegal shooting and poaching, and climate change.

Whooping cranes are known for their strong social bonds. They are monogamous, typically forming lifelong pairs around two to three years of age. Courtship includes beautiful behaviors such as unison walks, synchronized calls, and elaborate dances. Once paired, cranes usually begin nesting around four years old, breeding seasonally in protected wetland habitats.

Houston Zoo is home to Heiden and Angel, a bonded pair of whooping cranes who arrived from the International Crane Foundation in 2019. They have been paired for over a decade and now serve as pow-

Saving Whooping Cranes- A Comeback Story

Each year, more than two million Zoo guests have the opportunity to see Heiden and Angel and learn about the challenges whooping cranes face in the wild. Our Zoo Crew teens and volunteers are often stationed nearby, sharing facts about cranes and the wetland ecosystems they depend on.

Guests can see Heiden and Angel in the Kathrine G. McGovern Texas Wetlands exhibit. Every Zoo visit helps support conservation programs that protect whooping cranes and their habitat.

WHOOPING CRANE CONSERVATION

Houston Zoo proudly supports whooping crane conservation in several meaningful ways. We partner with the International Crane Foundation to advance education and conservation efforts statewide.

Nearly 70% of the entire wild whooping crane population winters at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, right here in Texas. The Zoo is a sponsor of the annual Whooping Crane Festival in Port Aransas, held each February. The festival brings together biologists and conservationists who share the latest research and recovery work happening across North America. Guests even have the opportunity to visit crane habitat for a chance to see these magnificent birds in the wild.

PROTECTING CRITICAL COASTAL HABITAT

In addition to education and partnerships, Houston Zoo provides hands-on support for habitat protection. Recently, 13 Zoo staff members participated in an overnight Saving Wildlife Training Opportunity with the San Antonio Bay Partnership.

Over two days, the team removed 65 large bags, boxes, and crates of litter, totaling an estimated 7,800 pieces of debris, from Matagorda Bay and Espiritu Santo Bay. This effort helped restore vital coastal habitat for whooping cranes, sea turtles, and countless other wildlife species.

Together, these efforts reflect the Zoo’s ongoing commitment to protecting whooping cranes and ensuring their iconic calls continue to echo across Texas wetlands for generations to come.

he iconic bald eagle is the perfect wild animal to feature in our patriotic issue of PetTalk. As the national emblem of the United States, this majestic bird proudly flies our beautiful skies in record numbers after coming back from near extinction in the early 1960’s. When I was growing up, the bald eagle numbers had dwindled to a mere 47 nesting pairs, but through protection from the government, the species rebounded and I can remember vividly the first time I saw one in the wild. I was on a ferry trip from Seattle to Vancouver and one flew overhead. It was breathtaking to finally see this bird that I had only experienced as a symbol depicted on everything from dollar bills to the US Capitol, gliding effortlessly in the sky above my head.

The bald eagle is the second largest bird of prey in North America (the Californian condor is larger) and can fly 20-40 mph and dive at speeds over 100 mph. Impressive!

Have you ever wondered why they are called bald eagles? They are obviously not bald, but rather they have a gorgeous head of beautiful white feathers for which they garner the description of “bald” because

it stands out so starkly against the rest of their feathers. Yes, they are beautiful but did you also know they are loyal? Once paired, bald eagles remain together until one dies. That is so honorable - just like a great American soldier!

MEET SALLY RIDE

Bald eagles are not your typical zoo animal but Houston is privileged to have Sally Ride make her home right here in H-Town. Sally was injured as a juvenile in the wild and found by a game warden in Sallisaw, OK. After rehab at the Tulsa Zoo, it was determined her injury was too extensive to be released back to the wild because she was unable to fly. Fortunately, Sally found a great home with a gigantic nest at the Houston Zoo where she can proudly represent the bald eagle species as one of beauty, majesty and strength. Visiting Sally at the zoo is so amazing because her exhibit is open (since she can’t fly) and viewers can see her up close to witness her detailed beauty. She was quite cooperative for our photoshoot, posing in just the right direction. She’s not only beautiful, she is smart enough to know her best side for the camera!

We want dogs to understand expectations and be able to generalize those concepts, while also paying close attention to their emotional state and motivation.

Q: Why do you believe training plays such an important role in creating happy, confident dogs who thrive at home and in everyday life?

A: When dogs understand what is being expected of them and how to succeed, they're less anxious, less frustrated, and more equipped to navigate the world around them.

This clear and consistent guidance helps dogs feel secure rather than stressed or overwhelmed. Training also creates freedom. Dogs

can safely participate in more real-life situations because they have the skills to handle those environments appropriately. This leads to a better quality of life for the dog, and less frustration for the family.

Q: What sets Revival Dog Training apart from other training programs in Houston and Manhattan?

A: We offer a breadth of programs from Private Lessons and Group Classes to Day Training, Board and Train, and Academic Daycare.
