On behalf of the Houston Marathon Committee (HMC), it is our pleasure to welcome you to our world-class weekend of events which continues to reach new heights as we celebrate our 54th anniversary of the Houston Marathon.

January 11, 2026

What began in 1972 as a 26.2-mile marathon around Memorial Park, race day now consists of two World Athletics Gold Labeled events hosted simultaneously on our flat, fast city-wide courses that highlight many of Houston’s most iconic sites. Houston is the only city to host two gold labeled events simultaneously at this distance in the entire world. Over 38,000 registrants, 7,000 volunteers, and 250,000+ spectators make the Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon the largest single-day sporting event in Houston.

Greetings, As Mayor of Houston, it is my pleasure to welcome the participants and supporters of the 2026 Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half Marathon and We Are Houston 5K presented by Aramco and Chevron.

The 3-day weekend of events showcases Houston’s cityscapes, culture and comradery. It also brings together more than 300,000 spectators, runners and volunteers to produce Houston’s largest single-day sporting event on race-day Sunday. Once again, this year the race will feature 38,000 participants including a renowned field of some of the world’s most talented professional runners set for record breaking performances.

As Houstonians, we believe that civic celebration is vital to the spirit of Houston and it is that belief, over the past 54 years, that has made the Houston Marathon a cherished tradition for us all. Annually, thousands of Houstonians volunteer their time, businesses offer their support and organizers work diligently to create an event that serves as a symbol of achievement for elite athletes and every day runners alike.

I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to each of these generous sponsors and volunteers who unite annually to create this time-honored event and invite each of you as participants to do the same as you navigate your way through the bustle of the weekend.

The race is full of motivation and inspiration as the local community continues to display an overwhelming feeling of comradery in its rebuilding efforts. Not only has the number of people who Run, Cheer, and Volunteer grown significantly over the past five decades, race day has also evolved into a weekend of events. The We Are Houston 5K presented by Aramco and Chevron is conducted on Saturday and will feature over 8,000 registrants, while approximately 60,000 guests will visit the two-day Houston Marathon Health & Fitness EXPO presented by Houston Methodist. Visitors and locals can also join the celebration at RunFest presented by Michelob Ultra at Discovery Green on Saturday and Sunday.

While we are proud of the growth and evolution of race weekend, we are truly honored to have the opportunity each year to celebrate the many PR’s, milestones, and record-setting performances.

This year will be no different as the HMC hosts approximately 400 Athletes with Disabilities (AWD) and their guides.

Additionally, this year the Houston Marathon Foundation will provide free entry, transportation, shoes, shirts, and training support to 914 local students from 31 at-risk schools. This is the second straight year that the HMF has hosted over 900 students from at-risk schools since the inception of the We Run Houston after-school running program, which will increase the total number of participating students to 7,051 children introduced to the many benefits of running over the past decade. Increasing accessibility to this beloved sport is a responsibility that continues to drive us and our goals of welcoming more new runners year after year.

We also wish to show our appreciation to the tens of thousands of runners who have selflessly fundraised for the Run for a Reason (RFAR) charity program since it was created in 1995. The RFAR program recently surpassed the $41 million milestone raised for local charities, and that total continues to grow.

To host a hallmark event of this size and nature, it truly does take a village and we are so fortunate and grateful to be supported by the Mayor’s Office of Special Events, Houston First, Public Works, METRO, and all Houston public safety agencies. This weekend would not be possible without the support of the thousands of volunteers, public servants, officials, charities, businesses, and the best running community in the world.

Becoming a Houston Marathon Local Elite is no easy feat. This program is designed as a unique offering for the Houston running community. The Houston Marathon Committee is dedicated to caring for this community by providing finishers in each age category that meet the qualifying standards a free entry, VIP ride to the warm-up tent at the start line and a post-race hospitality suite.

RUNNING TO THE RHYTHM How music can kick your race-day performance into high gear Patricia Winter, PhD, MT-BC Research Scientist, Houston Methodist Center for Performing Arts Medicine

It’s almost race day, and you’ve optimized your training plans, your nutrition and your gear — but what about your race playlist?

Music can be a powerful tool to enhance athletic performance, especially when you listen to music you already know and love. Patricia Winter, research scientist at the Houston Methodist Center for Performing Arts Medicine, breaks down this physiological and psychological phenomenon, as well as offers some tips on crafting your perfect race-day playlist.

MUSIC AND RUNNING: A DYNAMIC DUO Listening to music while you run not only keeps you distracted and entertained during a tough workout, but it triggers the release of powerful “feel-good” hormones such as dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins, leading to overall exercise benefits. These benefits are heightened even more by selecting music that you like.

“Your personal choice of music can contribute to decreased rates of perceived exertion (RPE), increased enjoyment and interest in exercise, and a greater ability to divert one’s attention and focus away from exercise discomfort, leading to an increase in pain tolerance,” says Winter.

Reseach shows that runners who listen to their favorite tracks during timed trials not only ran faster but also maintained higher power output — even when their RPE didn’t change. That means music can help you run harder without feeling worse.

MUSIC CAN PUMP YOU UP — LITERALLY Some evidence also suggests that listening to music can help the heart function more efficiently during exercise by improving the contractility of the heart, thereby increasing cardiac output. Moreover, when you listen to music you prefer, you’re able to keep up greater intensity while still maintaining a “good” feeling.

Runners and other athletes may also experience “segmentation” when listening to music, which Winter explains as “the anticipation of hearing a segment of a familiar song, resulting in a heightened state of arousal that signals the body to increase work output.” To power through the toughest stretch of your race, try queuing up your favorite song with the most intense musical build-up.

PERSONALIZING YOUR PLAYLIST

There are several factors to consider when curating your raceday playlist. For example, Winter cautions against the assertion that faster tempo always yields increased heart rate.

“Several musical elements can contribute to increased heart rate, including one’s familiarity with the music, whether it’s preferred or not, the tempo, the volume and the point at which one listens to the music during the exercise event,” says Winter. “When testing a race-day playlist, be mindful of your heart rate and consider the elements of your chosen music that may influence those results.”

It’s also important to think about the race route as much as possible, so try to imagine what types of music will fit with what you might need at any point in the course. Whether it’s pacesetting, distraction from discomfort or the jolt of energy you need to keep pushing forward, different songs will serve different purposes throughout your race.

MIND YOUR VOLUME AND YOUR MOOD Winter encourages runners to remain aware of music volume as you train and race. “Our auditory system adapts to loud sounds, which increases our desire for and our tolerance of loud sounds,” Winter explains. “We can train ourselves to need the music to be too loud as we prepare for and then run the race.”

Finally, Winter emphasizes the importance of experimenting with and feeling confident in your race-day playlist. “There have been several times when I have made a playlist that carried me through a whole season of training only to deeply dislike it on race day,” she says. “Try your playlist out before race day and know that your mood and interest in the music may be wildly different on the day of.”

Regardless of your musical preferences, you can be sure that tuning in to your favorite running songs will give you the boost of energy, endurance and excitement you need to push yourself to a peak performance on race day.

WHY CRESCENDO HILL? A crescendo in a musical piece is where the music gets louder, and the sound pushes out at a higher decibel. When you push yourself while running, you are focusing your energy on going faster or pushing uphill. up to the Houston Marathon Weekend of Events, the team is a sea of purple holding their cheerful animal-themed signs that spread Friend for Life awareness wherever they go.

RUNNING FOR ANIMALS FRIENDS FOR LIFE RUNS FOR A REASON IN RECORD NUMBERS For nearly 2,200 athletes participating in this year’s race weekend as RFAR HEROES, preparation went beyond logging miles. It also meant raising funds and awareness for causes close to their hearts. Since its inception in 1995, the Chevron Houston Marathon Run for a Reason (RFAR) Program has provided a platform for individuals and organizations to fundraise on behalf of nonprofit partners as part of their race experience. Over the years, RFAR has raised more than $41 million for its charity partners, becoming a vital source of both financial support and community awareness for Houston’s nonprofit sector. This impact is made possible by the thousands of people who choose to fundraise, donate, or amplify the program each year.

One of this year’s 60 official RFAR charity partners—Friends for Life—is a powerful example of what happens when RFAR HEROES unite around a common cause.

Friends for Life, a Houston no-kill animal shelter, founded in 2002, has raised more than $230,000 through Run for a Reason fundraising this year—more than double last year’s total. These funds support far more than food and medical care for animals at the shelter. They help keep families and pets together through owner support services designed to prevent animals from ever entering the shelter system. They help enable disaster rescue and relief efforts for animals during hurricanes, bring veterinary services directly to communities facing barriers to access, and support a wide range of other innovative programs that reflect Friends for Life’s model of creating systemic change that saves animals and gives them safe homes.

Powering that fundraising is the Friends for Life Running Team, which has also exploded in growth from 45 RFAR HERO runners six years ago, to 210 this year—the largest team size ever seen in the RFAR program. Of those 210 runners, 81% are newcomers to the team. For Friends for Life, each new runner represents more than just increased fundraising power. A larger running team has translated into more new volunteers at the shelter, more eyes on pet adoption events, and an even stronger Friends for Life Running Team community.

Friends for Life Running Team Chair Lisa Cari believes the success has been a team effort and the supportive community of the FFL Running Team is key to the group’s growth. She first became involved by cheering on friends at

For another avid runner and animal lover, Shannon McGuire, the camaraderie and sense of purpose that have come with being part of RFAR and the Friends for Life Running Team are undeniable. She noticed the team’s cheer squad at multiple Houston-area 5K races last summer, always offering enthusiastic encouragement when she needed it. By the third sighting, she realized she wanted to run her next Chevron Houston Marathon with Friends for Life—even though she had already registered independently. She converted her entry to a Run for a Reason registration and committed to fundraising for the organization while marathon training. local races and noticing the Friends for Life Running Team’s support crew in action. Friends for Life has become known for their annual high-energy “Hoopla” cheer station at mile 12 of the Aramco Houston Half Marathon and mile 25 of the Chevron Houston Marathon course, featuring unforgettable animal costumes, creative signs and infectious enthusiasm. After running the Aramco Houston Half Marathon with the team last year, Cari stepped into the team chair role to help lead the group this year. “I’m a runner who loves dogs,” she says. “This is my way of giving back to the animal rescue community by combining my two loves.”

While fundraising requires putting yourself out there to ask for support and that can be daunting, Shannon says that the meaningful cause makes it feel good—sometimes even easy—especially after experiencing the shelter’s services firsthand this year when helping a friend adopt a cat. “It was really cool to know that the money we’re raising during this time helped provide the amazing services they got and give this animal the best life possible,” she reflected. “Through this whole process, it’s been a really rewarding experience. I don’t think I’ll ever do a half or full marathon without Friends for Life again. I don’t want to.”

This year, Cari has taken the team’s signature race-day energy and used it to further develop the FFL Running Team into a special running program for animal lovers. “It’s not just the animal community we’re engaging—it’s also the running community,” she explains. “That’s really helped us grow.” She makes a point to attend teammates’ races to cheer them on when she’s not racing herself, strengthening bonds within the group and creating opportunities to share Friends for Life’s mission with new audiences. Throughout the year, the team gathers for group runs, social events, and races, with a focus on truly developing together as runners—whether improving technique, time, or stamina—while keeping running fun. Supporting Friends for Life always goes hand-in-hand with the running. At Monday night group runs, a shelter dog often joins for exercise and socialization.

At its core, the Friends for Life Running Team embodies a natural connection between endurance sports and lasting community impact work. As Cari puts it, “half marathon and marathon runners understand commitment, discipline, and long-term thinking—the same qualities required to create systemic change in animal welfare. With the largest Run for a Reason team this year, Friends for Life runners aren’t just running for cats and dogs in need of care and homes. They’re running for smarter, more humane communities built on compassion, evidence, and persistence.”

“Just like marathon training,” Cari adds, “meaningful change happens because people show up—mile after mile.”

Shannon McGuire is also the winner of this year’s RFAR Coaster Design Contest – an annual tradition that invites RFAR charities and fundraisers to design a collectible coaster that is given to all RFAR HEROES as part of their race day swag. Shannon was thrilled to know Friends for Life would receive more exposure over race weekend through her coaster design.

About her design she says: “This fun coaster design came to me during one of my many long runs. I love to express myself on each run through loud and bold colors which help remind me to find the joy in each step.

The twenty-six stars on each shoe represent the 2026 race and the 26(.2) miles many of us are about to run. The lace design symbolizes that our work with RFAR begins when we lace up our shoes to create awareness and raise funds for incredible charities!”

“I had problems at first with training, but then my excitement took over,” she says. “My advice is that if you have a tough obstacle like me, don’t let it stop you from doing what you want to do.”

For older students, the lessons learned through training often carry over to other areas of life. Twelfth grader Caroline, who didn’t discover running until joining the program two years ago, says the discipline required to prepare for a half marathon has influenced her habits.

“I think this experience has helped me become a more disciplined person because we’re waking up and coming out here,” she reflects.

“I feel myself being more disciplined in every other aspect of my life as well.”

Others benefit greatly from the sense of belonging that comes from being a part of a team. Fourth grader Elizar highlights the social aspect as a favorite part of the program. “I like that you can explore the outdoors and run with friends—that’s fun!” he says.

Twelfth grader Mischa describes the camaraderie and support that comes from working towards a shared goal. “I’ve learned what it’s like to run with a group and just completely support each other and be incredibly motivated by each other,” he says. “Everyone’s working toward this common goal, and no one’s trying to bring each other down, so it’s really a positive thing.”

We Run Houston After-School Running Program Empowers Houston’s Youth On January 10 and 11, just over 900 third- through twelfth-grade students will join the thousands taking on the We Are Houston 5K presented by Aramco and Chevron and the Aramco Houston Half Marathon. For these young athletes, the race marks the final challenge and the celebration of their season with the We Run Houston After-School Running Program. Representing 25 elementary and middle schools and six high schools across the Houston region, these students have spent the past four months training at least twice weekly with their school running clubs to build endurance and confidence for race day.

The We Run Houston After-School Running Program is an initiative of the Houston Marathon Foundation (HMF) that aims to develop students as runners and young adults through goal-setting, establishing healthy habits, and developing positive peer and mentor relationships. Serving schools throughout Greater Houston with an increased focus on at-risk populations, the program has helped more than 7,050 students train for and complete a half marathon or

5K since HMF began supporting the initiative in 2011. Each season, We Run Houston provides participating schools with coaching and training stipends, running shoes and shirts, complimentary race entries, and race-day transportation. School staff and volunteers who serve as running club managers and coaches play a vital role in making the program possible. The We Run Houston program also receives significant support from Aramco, in its fourth year of sponsoring the program, and Brooks, in its sixth year of providing running shoes and coordinating a “Meet the Elites” event where students get to hear from professional runners as part of their Race Weekend experience.

Throughout the season, students gain more than just the miles logged at practices. For many participants, We Run Houston provides a first introduction to running—rooted in encouragement, persistence, and positivity. Fourth grader Marianna remembers struggling at the beginning of the season but finding motivation from the positive environment.

culture: “Through We Run Houston events, our students have gained confidence as runners, setting and achieving personal goals while learning the importance of healthy habits and community involvement,” she says. “The excitement and pride our runners feel when representing Whispering Pines have boosted school spirit and strengthened our culture of wellness.”

Runners of all ages can benefit from the positive perspective and energy that We Run Houston participants are bringing to race weekend. As Caroline says, “My favorite part of all this is the energy that builds throughout the season, preparing for the half marathon. Everyone is just so excited and happy. I feel like running makes everyone a happier person.”

As students hit the course this weekend, their goals will range from completing a first race to achieving a personal best. For all, HMF hopes that experiencing the energy of Houston Marathon Weekend will inspire them to stay active and connected to community through running long after race weekend. not need to be professional or sponsored athletes to toe this prestigious starting line. They do, however, need to secure the “OTQ” — Olympic Trials Qualifying standard — during the designated qualifying window.

For the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, that qualifying window opened on September 1, 2025, and will close 60 days before the Trials, expected in early 2028. With the window now open, elite and sub-elite runners alike are targeting races known for fast times, competitive fields, and personal bests to make their attempt at hitting an OTQ mark, including the Chevron Houston Marathon.

Did you know that the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon has been hosted right here in Houston in the past? The Chevron Houston Marathon was the host site of the 1992 women’s and 2012 men’s and women’s U.S. Olympic Trials Marathons.

As the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles draw closer, runners across the country are beginning to chase one of distance running’s most coveted achievements: a spot at the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon.

Typically held in February during a Summer Olympics year, the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon determines which athletes will represent Team USA in the marathon race at the Olympics. While the nation’s top professional distance runners will certainly have their sights set on the Trials, competitors do

USA Track & Field has set the marathon qualifying standards at 2:16:00 for men and 2:37:00 for women for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon. Athletes may also qualify via a half marathon time, with standards of 1:03:00 for men and 1:12:00 for women. However, the qualifying window for half marathon times is a shorter period that does not open until January 1, 2027. That means runners competing in Houston this year can only qualify for the Trials via the marathon, not the half marathon.

In the lead up to the 2024 Paris Olympics, 228 men and 173 women qualified for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon. Of those, 219 men and 158 women earned their spots via marathon times, with the remaining athletes qualifying through half marathon performances or other approved methods. In addition to time standards, athletes may qualify by a top-ten finish at designated U.S. Marathon Championship races, being a member of the last three U.S. Olympic marathon teams, and other qualification methods specified by USA Track & Field.

MEET THE NEWEST HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE The Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon currently represent Houston’s largest annual single-day sporting event, hold both the fastest men’s and women’s half marathon times ever run on North American soil, and provide a stage for over 30,000 runners of all ages and levels to experience a world-class racing event. This year’s Houston Marathon Committee Half of Fame Inductee, Brant Kotch, has played a critical role in shaping the annual Houston Marathon Weekend of Events that athletes across Houston, Texas, and even the world, have come to know and love.

Kotch, who is Senior Counsel at Crain, Caton & James, P.C., began volunteering on the Houston Marathon course in 1992, joined the Board of Directors in 1996, and became the Course Director in 1997— still a volunteer position at that time. Event weekend looked quite different in those early days, with the marathon being the sole event held. In 2002, Kotch was named Board President and Race Director.

His accomplishments do not just include bringing the elite competition of the marathon and half marathon to new heights while simultaneously significantly growing open field participation. Under his leadership, the Chevron Houston Marathon Run for a Reason Charity Program also grew substantially, and 30 years later this fundraising platform for runners has raised over $41 million and counting for local charities. He additionally championed the inception of the Houston Marathon Foundation in 2007, where he still serves as a member of the HMF Board of Directors. He also brought significant contributions to the redesign of the city-wide courses in both 2002 and 2014.

His contributions as a volunteer are truly unmatched.

The Houston Marathon Committee is proud to officially induct Kotch into the Hall of Fame. “No one deserves this honor more than Brant as he has led this organization to unimaginable new heights, turning a one-day race into a hallmark event that now benefits the city of Houston and the local community in so many ways,” says HMC Executive Director Wade Morehead. “Brant’s passion for long-distance running, this community, and our annual race weekend is unmatched. He truly loves the people of this community and this industry. As a volunteer for over three decades, it is truly remarkable the time and effort he has dedicated to ensure its growth and success.”

During his 29-year tenure on the Board of Directors — including 22 years as Board President and 18 years as Race Director — the HMC added the half marathon event and hosted 16 U.S. Half Marathon Championships. It also staged the historic 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon, marking the first time the men’s and women’s races were conducted simultaneously, while nationally broadcast! Under his direction, the Houston Marathon Committee consistently adapted, learned new things, and grew in new ways — thanks to people like Brant dedicated to making Houston’s marquee road running event the best it could be. Over his tenure of leadership, the number of race weekend participants annually has more than tripled and the HMC is now the only organization in the world to host a World Athletics Gold Label marathon and half marathon at the same time on the same course.

Houston Marathon Legacy Runners Hundreds of thousands of runners have participated in the Houston Marathon since its inception in 1972 and many of those athletes continue to come back year after year. To honor this dedication, the Houston Marathon Committee created the Houston Marathon Legacy Program. This program celebrates runners who have completed ten or more Chevon Houston Marathons or Aramco Houston Half Marathons exclusively in that event distance.
