A Not-So-Spooky Halloween: Throw the Ultimate Backyard Monster Bash

Forget elaborate decorations and expensive entertainment. This Halloween, invite your favorite families over for a monster-sized celebration filled with creative games, frightfully delicious treats and memories that last long after the candy disappears. Halloween doesn't have to mean elaborate haunted houses, expensive decorations or hours spent preparing complicated treats. Sometimes the most memorable celebrations happen right in your backyard with a handful of friends, a few creative activities and just enough spooky atmosphere to make the evening special. This October, consider hosting a Not-So-Spooky Monster Bash: a family-friendly Halloween party designed for children and adults to enjoy together. The concept is simple. Transform your backyard, patio or living room into a festive gathering space with three activity stations, a build-your-own Halloween buffet and a costume parade.

Set the Scene Without Spending a Fortune Start with a classic Halloween color palette of orange, black and purple. Arrange inexpensive pumpkins near the entrance, hang paper bats from tree branches and drape battery-operated string lights around the patio. Black tablecloths instantly transform ordinary folding tables into Halloween buffet stations. Create a photo backdrop using a dark sheet, oversized paper moons and a few cardboard tombstones. Add a basket of silly props, including witch hats, superhero masks and oversized glasses.

Here's how to make it happen.

For younger guests, skip realistic skeletons and frightening decorations. Friendly ghosts, colorful pumpkins and smiling monsters create a festive atmosphere without overwhelming sensitive children. Houston's unpredictable October weather makes a backup indoor location essential. Keep decorations portable in case an afternoon thunderstorm changes your plans.

Three Stations, Endless Entertainment Instead of organizing one activity at a time, establish three stations where children can participate at their own pace. The Monster Creation Station Supply miniature pumpkins, washable markers, stickers, googly eyes and craft supplies. Let guests invent their own friendly monsters and take their creations home as party favors. The Haunted Games Zone Set up pumpkin bowling using small lightweight balls and plastic pins decorated as ghosts. Add a beanbag toss with cardboard jack-o'-lantern targets and a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt. The Mad Scientist Laboratory Older children can experiment with baking soda, vinegar and food coloring to create bubbling monster potions. Use trays to contain spills, provide adult supervision and remind children that the mixtures aren't for drinking.

Create a Frightfully Delicious Buffet A Halloween buffet should be playful, easy to prepare and appealing to picky eaters. Offer mummy dogs made with refrigerated crescent dough wrapped around hot dogs, miniature pumpkinshaped sandwiches and individual cups of vegetables with ranch dressing. For dessert, prepare ghost bananas using banana halves and small chocolate-chip eyes. Clementines with tiny celery stems become adorable edible pumpkins. Set up a monster popcorn bar with plain popcorn, pretzels, dried fruit and assorted toppings. Keep potential choking hazards away from younger guests and label foods containing common allergens. Serve water, apple cider and a nonalcoholic witch's brew made with fruit juice and sparkling water. For additional fun, ask each family to bring one Halloween-themed dish for a friendly potluck.

Host a Costume Parade About halfway through the party, gather everyone for a costume parade. Encourage guests to walk across the backyard while someone announces their costumes. Play upbeat Halloween music and invite adults to participate. Instead of choosing one winner, celebrate every participant with playful recognitions such as Most Creative, Silliest Costume or Best Family Theme. Take a group photograph before younger guests become tired or costumes start disappearing.

End With a Glow-in-the-Dark Surprise As the evening winds down, distribute glow bracelets and organize a short flashlight scavenger hunt.

Your Party Planning Timeline One week before the party, send invitations, finalize your guest list and ask about allergies.

Clever Costumes, Little Cost

CREATIVE HALLOWEEN LOOKS YOU CAN MAKE AT HOME

By Katy O’ Brien

The most memorable Halloween costumes don't always come from a store. With a little imagination and a few everyday supplies, Houston families can create original costumes without spending a fortune. Halloween costumes have become increasingly elaborate, but parents don't need expensive accessories or complicated sewing skills to create something spectacular. In fact, some of the most memorable costumes begin with items already hanging in your child's closet. This year, challenge your family to create costumes that are imaginative, comfortable and affordable. From adorable toddler outfits to coordinated family themes, these ideas prove that creativity is the ultimate Halloween accessory.

1. The Walking Weather Forecast

2. The Underwater Jellyfish

3. The Miniature Artist

Perfect for children who love science, this costume transforms an ordinary gray sweatshirt into a miniature thunderstorm. Attach lightweight cotton batting to a gray hat to create a fluffy cloud. Cut raindrops from blue felt and suspend them from the hat using short lengths of ribbon. Add a yellow lightning bolt to the sweatshirt. For a coordinated family costume, parents can dress as the sun and rainbow while siblings represent different weather conditions. Estimated materials budget: $10– $20, assuming you already own the clothing.

Turn a lightweight, transparent umbrella into a magical underwater creature. Attach colorful ribbons or strips of lightweight fabric around the umbrella's edges. Pair it with clothing in coordinating ocean colors. Battery-operated fairy lights can add a glowing effect for evening celebrations, provided they're securely attached and the battery compartment remains inaccessible to young children. Keep ribbons short enough to prevent tripping or tangling, and avoid umbrellas with exposed sharp points. This costume is especially effective for Halloween parades and family photographs.

Have a budding Picasso in the family? Dress your child in black pants, a striped shirt and a colorful beret. Create a cardboard artist's palette and decorate it with bright paint splashes. A clean paintbrush tucked into a pocket completes the look. For an even more creative variation, siblings can dress as famous paintings, paint tubes or colorful crayons. This is an excellent last-minute costume because most supplies can be found at home.

4. The Family Space Mission Space-themed costumes work particularly well for Houston families living in the home of NASA's Johnson Space Center. Dress children in white clothing decorated with homemade mission patches and American flag appliqués. Create a lightweight cardboard rocket for an older child or transform a stroller into a miniature spaceship using securely attached decorations that don't obstruct ventilation or movement. Parents can dress as astronauts, mission control specialists or friendly extraterrestrials. For inspiration, explore the educational resources available through Space Center Houston . 5. The Living Garden Transform your family into an entire garden. One child can become a sunflower using a yellow felt petal headband and green clothing. Another can dress as a bumblebee with blackand-yellow stripes and lightweight wings. Parents can join as gardeners, butterflies or watering cans. Use soft felt and fabric rather than heavy accessories, especially for toddlers. The finished costumes are colorful, recognizable and ideal for photographs. 6. Let The Teens Take the Lead Older children may prefer costumes inspired by favorite books, hobbies, sports or pop culture. Rather than choosing an elaborate costume for them, establish a budget and encourage them to design their own. A thrift-store jacket might become the foundation for a detective costume. An oversized blazer and homemade microphone could create a television reporter. A favorite sports jersey can become part of a coordinated family team. Encourage teenagers to create costumes with friends using a shared theme. Group costumes based on board games, breakfast foods or favorite book characters allow everyone to express their personality.

09

Houston Family Magazine

Make Safety Part of the Design Comfort and visibility should be priorities, particularly for children trick-or-treating after dark. Choose costumes that allow children to walk easily, see clearly and move freely. Avoid long fabric that could create tripping hazards. Use reflective tape on dark clothing and provide flashlights or glow accessories. Test face paint on a small area of skin beforehand and follow the manufacturer's age recommendations. In Houston, remember that Halloween temperatures can still be warm. Choose breathable fabrics and bring a lightweight layer in case the evening turns chilly. Finally, organize a family costume-making afternoon rather than completing everything yourself. Children who help design their own costumes gain creative confidence, practice problemsolving and enjoy the satisfaction of wearing something they made. And those handmade masterpieces often become the Halloween memories families treasure most.

The Houston Education Guide: Finding the Right School for Your Child From neighborhood classrooms to specialized learning environments, Greater Houston offers families an extraordinary range of educational possibilities. Here's how to navigate your options and find a school where your child can thrive.

Choosing a school is one of the most consequential decisions parents make. For Houston families, that decision comes with an abundance of options: traditional public schools, magnet programs, charter schools, independent schools, faith-based schools and specialized learning environments. With so many choices, it's easy to become overwhelmed by rankings, recommendations and impressive campus tours. But the most important question isn't necessarily which school has the strongest reputation. It's which school offers the right combination of academics, support, opportunities and community for your particular child. October is an ideal time to begin exploring options for the next academic year, especially for families considering a transition to middle school, high school or private education. Start With Your Child, Not the School Before scheduling campus tours, take inventory of your child's academic strengths, interests, personality and learning needs.

The Awty School

Does your child flourish in a highly structured environment, or do they benefit from hands-on exploration? Are they passionate about science, performing arts, languages or athletics? Would smaller classes or additional learning support make a meaningful difference? Consider your family's priorities, too. Commute times, tuition, transportation, extracurricular activities and school culture all contribute to the daily experience. A school that works beautifully for one sibling may not be the right environment for another.

10

Houston Family Magazine

Understand Houston's Educational Landscape Greater Houston offers several educational pathways worth exploring. Traditional public schools provide neighborhood-based education and may offer specialized academic programs. Parents can research individual campuses through the Texas Education Agency's school report card website , which provides academic performance and school information.

2026

Yorkshire Academy HISD also operates magnet and School Choice programs. For the 2027–2028 academic year, its published schedule lists December 8, 2026, as the opening date for Phase One applications and February 12, 2027, as the closing date. Families should review eligibility, application requirements and program-specific details before applying. Charter schools provide another tuition-free public education option. Individual campuses may emphasize college preparation, STEM, the arts or particular instructional models. Application procedures and admission lotteries vary. Private and independent schools offer additional choices, including college-preparatory, Montessori, international, religious and specialized programs. Families should compare curriculum, accreditation, tuition, financial aid and student-support services. Look Beyond the Rankings Academic performance data can be a useful starting point, but it should never be the only consideration. The Texas Education Agency's school report cards include academic and campus information, allowing parents to compare schools and examine performance measures. Texas Education Agency+1 Look at student growth, attendance, course offerings and the opportunities available to children with different academic abilities. During a campus visit, observe how teachers interact with students. Ask about classroom expectations, student wellbeing, technology policies and communication with parents. For older students, investigate college counseling, advanced coursework, career pathways, internships and extracurricular programs.

Make the Most of Campus Tours A polished admissions presentation can tell you a great deal about a school's philosophy. Everyday classroom experiences may tell you even more. Ask whether you can observe an ordinary school day, speak with current parents or meet teachers who work with your child's age group. Five questions are particularly valuable: How does the school support students who need additional academic challenges or assistance? What does communication between parents and teachers look like? How are bullying, student safety and emotional well-being addressed? What opportunities exist beyond traditional academics? How does the school measure student progress? For private schools, request a complete explanation of tuition, fees, financial assistance and enrollment contracts. Plan Ahead for the Next School Year October is a practical starting point for families considering a change. Create a shortlist, research admissions requirements and schedule open houses. Keep a calendar of application deadlines, testing requirements, financial aid dates and enrollment decisions. Parents considering specialized programs should ask about prerequisites and transportation before submitting applications. Finally, remember that choosing a school is not about finding a perfect institution. It's about finding a supportive environment where your child can develop academically, socially and personally. Houston Family Magazine's Education Directory is designed to help families begin that journey, discover local options and connect directly with schools throughout Greater Houston.

Most importantly, include your child in the conversation whenever age-appropriate.

The October Check-In

Is Your Child n Track?? By Katy O’Brien

The excitement of a new school year has faded, and the first report cards are approaching. October is the perfect time to evaluate what's working, identify challenges and help students finish the semester with confidence.

By October, the shiny new backpacks have lost their sparkle, afterschool schedules are in full swing and Houston families are settling into their academic routines. But beneath the busy schedules, an important question deserves attention: How is your child really doing in school? For some students, the transition into a new grade brings unexpected challenges. Others may be completing assignments successfully but struggling with friendships, organization or confidence. An October academic check-in can help parents identify concerns before they become larger problems.

Look Beyond the Report Card Grades provide useful information, but they don't tell the entire story. A student earning good grades might be spending excessive hours completing homework. Another may understand classroom material but struggle with test anxiety or organization. Instead of opening the conversation with questions about grades, ask your child what they enjoy about school, which subjects feel difficult and whether anything is causing stress. For younger children, conversations during car rides or bedtime often reveal more than formal discussions at the kitchen table. With teenagers, try asking what they would change about their school day if they could. Listen carefully before offering solutions.

12

Houston Family Magazine

Recognize the Early Warning Signs Occasional frustration is a normal part of learning. Persistent changes in behavior, however, deserve attention. Watch for declining grades, missing assignments, increased resistance to school, difficulty sleeping or frequent complaints about headaches and stomachaches. Children may also become unusually withdrawn or irritable when they're struggling academically or socially. Rather than immediately assuming a lack of effort, investigate potential causes. A student who suddenly dislikes reading might be encountering more challenging material. A middle schooler missing assignments could be overwhelmed by managing multiple teachers and deadlines. Contact teachers when concerns persist, and involve a school counselor when emotional or social difficulties appear to be affecting your child's experience.

2026

Make Parent-Teacher Conferences Count Many schools schedule parent-teacher conferences or progress updates during the fall. Parents can make these conversations more productive by arriving prepared. Review recent assignments, assessment results and classroom communications beforehand. Ask teachers where your child demonstrates confidence and where additional practice would be beneficial. For children receiving special education services or classroom accommodations, discuss whether existing supports are meeting their needs. Avoid leaving the conference with only a general impression that your child needs to work harder. Request two or three specific actions that can be implemented at home or school. Schedule a follow-up conversation to evaluate progress. Know When to Seek Additional Help Sometimes a few organizational changes or extra practice sessions make a meaningful difference. Other situations may require tutoring, specialized instruction or a more comprehensive evaluation. Houston families can explore academic enrichment and tutoring opportunities through school recommendations, local learning centers and public libraries. The Houston Public Library and Harris County Public Library are useful starting points for books, research materials, educational programming and available learning resources. When considering private tutoring, ask about the instructor's qualifications, experience with your child's age group and methods for measuring improvement. Tutoring should address specific learning needs rather than simply adding more homework. Establish a Sustainable Routine Academic success depends on more than time spent studying. The Village School Create a predictable after-school schedule that allows for homework, physical activity, family time and adequate sleep. Younger children may benefit from short work sessions followed by movement breaks. Older students can practice planning assignments across the week rather than waiting until the evening before they're due. Designate a comfortable study space and minimize unnecessary digital distractions. Most importantly, recognize effort, improvement and problem-solving rather than focusing exclusively on grades.

13

Houston Family Magazine

Finish the Semester Strong October offers families an opportunity to make small adjustments before the holiday season arrives. Encourage children to identify one academic goal and one personal goal for the remainder of the semester. Perhaps your elementary student wants to read independently for 20 minutes each evening. Your middle schooler might focus on turning in assignments consistently, while your teenager works toward balancing academics and extracurricular commitments. Celebrate progress along the way. A successful school year isn't defined by perfect grades. It's built through curiosity, resilience, healthy routines and the confidence to ask for help when it's needed.

parent hack parent hack The Halloween Candy Switch: How to Handle the Sugar Overload Without the Meltdowns 14

Halloween is magical for kids, but the mountain of candy that comes home on October 31 can leave parents wondering how to manage the sugar overload without becoming the Halloween villain. This year, try the Halloween Candy Switch, a simple family tradition that gives children control over their treats while making moderation a little easier. Start with a candy-sorting party. After trick-or-treating, spread out the loot and let children organize their favorites. Check candy for damaged packaging and remove anything unsuitable for their age or allergies. Introduce the Great Candy Trade. Invite children to exchange some of their candy for something special: a new book, a family movie night, extra bedtime reading or a small toy. Let them decide whether they want to participate rather than making it mandatory. Create a candy calendar. Help younger children choose when they'd like to enjoy their favorite treats over the coming weeks. Keeping candy at predictable snack or mealtimes can be easier on teeth than constant grazing. Share the extras. If your family has more candy than it wants, consider sharing unopened, individually wrapped treats with an organization that accepts them. The secret? Avoid making candy forbidden or turning Halloween into a battle over sugar. Instead, use the holiday to teach decision-making, moderation and healthy habits while keeping the magic alive.

HOUSTON FALL GUIDE!

Plan a Pumpkin-Patch Adventure

Celebrate Halloween in Your Neighborhood

Nothing says fall quite like choosing the perfect pumpkin.

Some of the most memorable October experiences happen close to home. Organize a neighborhood pumpkin-decorating contest, coordinate a family costume walk or invite neighbors to an outdoor Halloween movie night. Check community association calendars and local recreation centers for nearby fall festivals and seasonal celebrations. For families with younger children, a daytime neighborhood gathering can be an enjoyable alternative to late-night trickor-treating.

Make a morning or afternoon of visiting a Greater Houston pumpkin patch. Depending on the location, families may find hayrides, farm animals, corn mazes and seasonal treats. Before visiting, compare admission packages, activity restrictions and weather policies.

Make October Your Own Allow younger children to select their own small pumpkins, while older siblings can search for unusual shapes or participate in a family pumpkin-carving competition at home. Remember that Houston's October afternoons can still be hot. Bring sunscreen, water and comfortable walking shoes. Take a Family Nature Challenge Fall is a wonderful time to explore Houston's parks and nature trails. Visit Hermann Park , Memorial Park or the Houston Arboretum for a family nature walk. Create a scavenger hunt featuring five different leaf shapes, three bird species, an interesting tree and evidence of animal activity. Older children can photograph their discoveries and identify them later using library resources or reputable nature guides. Turn the experience into an annual family tradition by returning to the same trail each October.

18

Houston Family Magazine

The best fall bucket list isn't necessarily the longest. Choose a combination of free activities, special outings and simple traditions that work with your family's schedule. Let every family member select one experience, and reserve at least one weekend for spontaneous fun. What parents should compare beyond the district grade A district's overall accountability score is a useful starting point, but families should also examine their specific zoned schools, academic growth, advanced coursework, special education services, extracurricular opportunities and commute times. For example, Katy ISD and Clear Creek ISD have different district-wide scores, but an individual campus in either district may offer programs that suit a particular child. District boundaries and school attendance zones should also be confirmed before making housing decisions.

teen scene teen scene Your First Paycheck: How to Make Money Without Missing Out on Life

Want concert tickets, a new phone or money for your first car? Instead of asking your parents for another advance, October might be the perfect time to start earning your own cash. The good news? You don't need a traditional after-school job to get started. Turn your talents into cash. Love animals? Offer pet-sitting or dog-walking services to trusted neighbors. Good at math? Tutor younger students. Creative? Design birthday invitations, make jewelry or offer photography sessions. Start a neighborhood business. Fall is ideal for helping neighbors with yard work, organizing garages or decorating for the holidays. Start with people your family knows, and agree on your rates before accepting a job. Master the 50/30/20 challenge. Every time you earn money, try saving 50% for a big goal, setting aside 30% for everyday spending and reserving 20% for something special. Adjust the percentages to fit your priorities. Think beyond the paycheck. Running even a tiny business teaches you how to communicate with customers, manage your schedule and solve unexpected problems. Those skills look great on future college and job applications. Ready to get started? Set a $100 savings goal and challenge yourself to reach it before Thanksgiving. Your first paycheck might be small, but the independence that comes with earning it is priceless.
