Directions: Preheat oven to 400°F. Mix dry ingredients in one bowl and wet ingredients in another. Combine gently, fold in cheese and jalapeño, and divide into a greased muffin tin. Just before serving, add sparkling water and garnish. For younger children, skip whole cranberries in individual cups because they can be a choking hazard. Houston families can find seasonal ingredients at local farmers markets, including Urban Harvest. The best Thanksgiving meals aren't necessarily the most complicated. They're the ones that make everyone feel welcome, create opportunities for family connection and leave plenty of room for seconds.

Raising Grateful Kids:

7 MEANINGFUL WAYS HOUSTON FAMILIES CAN GIVE BACK

By Katy O’ Brien

November naturally inspires conversations about gratitude. But teaching children to appreciate what they have becomes even more meaningful when families turn thankful thoughts into helpful actions. Across Greater Houston, organizations work year-round to support neighbors experiencing hunger, housing instability and other challenges. Thanksgiving offers an opportunity to introduce children to volunteering, generosity and community responsibility. Here are seven meaningful ways to get started.

1. Help fight hunger with the Houston Food Bank The Houston Food Bank serves families throughout Southeast Texas and offers opportunities to donate food, contribute financially and volunteer. Families can organize a neighborhood food drive, collect shelf-stable groceries or participate in age-appropriate volunteer activities. Check current age requirements and registration availability before bringing children. Parent tip: Give kids a $15 grocery budget and let them select nutritious foods to donate.

2. Support families at Ronald McDonald House Houston When a child is receiving medical treatment, families often face enormous emotional and financial challenges. Ronald McDonald House Houston provides a supportive environment for families with seriously ill children. Families can explore wish-list donations, fundraising and approved volunteer opportunities. Children can help shop for requested supplies or create encouraging cards if the organization is accepting them.

3. Give gently used items a second life A closet cleanout can become a valuable lesson in generosity. Organizations such as Houston Children's Charity support children and families in need. Before donating clothing, toys or household items, check each organization's current acceptance guidelines. Encourage children to select items that are clean, complete and in good condition. Explain that giving means offering something another person would genuinely enjoy or need.

2026

4. Help Houston's animals Animal lovers can support the Houston SPCA, through donations, supply drives and approved volunteer programs. Younger children can help collect towels or pet supplies from an organization's current wish list. Older children may qualify for supervised activities depending on the organization's policies.

5. Create Thanksgiving care packages Work with a school, faith community or local nonprofit to identify families who would appreciate holiday meal supplies. Fill reusable grocery bags with stuffing mix, canned vegetables, rice, shelf-stable ingredients and a grocery gift card. Avoid assuming what families need. Partnering with an organization helps ensure donations are useful and welcomed.

6. Remember Houston's seniors The Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston supports older adults through its Meals on Wheels program. Families can explore approved volunteer and donation opportunities. At home, children can also make cards for older relatives or neighbors, with permission. Sometimes the most meaningful gift is simply making someone feel remembered.

7. Start a family kindness challenge Not every act of generosity requires money. Challenge your family to complete one act of kindness each day for a week: help a neighbor, write a thank-you note, clean a shared space or invite someone who might otherwise spend the holiday alone.

The lesson that lasts Volunteering shouldn't be limited to Thanksgiving. Choose one cause your family cares about and find a manageable way to support it throughout the year. Children learn generosity through repetition and example. When they see parents giving their time, listening to others and treating neighbors with dignity, gratitude becomes more than a holiday conversation. It becomes a family value.

At dinner, ask everyone to share how their actions made someone else's day better.

The November Learning Advantage: How to Keep Kids Engaged Before Winter Break By November, the excitement of a new school year has usually settled into a familiar routine. Homework assignments are becoming more challenging, extracurricular schedules are packed, and Thanksgiving break is just around the corner. For many Houston families, November is an ideal time to assess academic progress and address small learning gaps before they become bigger challenges. The good news? Supporting your child's education doesn't have to mean adding hours of homework.

Start with a first-semester check-in Most schools provide families with grades, progress reports or online portals where parents can monitor assignments and performance. Take 20 minutes to review your child's progress together. Rather than asking, "Why did you get this grade?" try questions that invite conversation: "What subject feels easiest right now?" "Is there anything at school that's becoming frustrating?" "What would help you feel more confident?" For families in Houston ISD, the district's website provides access to school resources and parent information. Parents in Katy ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Cy-Fair ISD and other Greater Houston districts should use their own school portals.

Make reading a daily family habit Reading is one of the simplest ways to reinforce vocabulary, comprehension and critical thinking. For elementary students, aim for 15–20 minutes of daily reading. Younger children benefit from being read to, while older students can explore novels, graphic novels and nonfiction based on their interests. Visit the Houston Public Library or Harris County Public Library for books, digital resources and educational programs. For reluctant readers, try letting them choose the material. Cookbooks, sports biographies, comics and how-to guides all provide meaningful reading opportunities.

Turn Thanksgiving into a learning laboratory The holiday season offers countless opportunities to practice academic skills without worksheets. Cooking teaches fractions, measurement and sequencing. Planning a holiday meal introduces budgeting and problem-solving. Reading about Thanksgiving's history opens conversations about historical sources, Native American perspectives and the differences between traditional stories and documented events.

Finish the semester strong November doesn't have to become a month of academic pressure. Think of it as an opportunity to reconnect with your child's learning experience. Celebrate improvements, encourage questions and remind children that asking for help is a strength. The goal isn't perfect grades. It's helping kids develop the confidence, curiosity and habits that will serve them throughout their education.

Ask younger children to double a recipe. Challenge middle schoolers to calculate the cost per serving. Encourage high school students to research how Thanksgiving traditions have changed over time. Learning feels more relevant when children can apply it to everyday experiences.

Know when extra help is needed If your child consistently struggles with homework, avoids a particular subject or shows declining confidence, communicate with the teacher. Ask which skills need reinforcement and whether tutoring, school intervention programs or additional practice would help. Houston families also have access to tutoring businesses, after-school learning centers and educational programs through community organizations. Before paying for outside assistance, ask your school about resources already available.

Protect downtime Academic progress isn't measured only by time spent studying. Children also need sleep, physical activity, creative play and opportunities to relax. Overscheduling can leave students exhausted and less motivated. During Thanksgiving break, maintain a few basic routines while allowing time for family activities. A short daily reading session, occasional educational outing and plenty of unstructured play can provide a healthy balance.

Make a Family Gratitude Tree Thanksgiving Craft with Heart By Katy O’Brien

Thanksgiving decorations don't have to be expensive or complicated to be meaningful. One of the sweetest ways to celebrate the season is by creating a family gratitude tree — a simple craft that encourages children to recognize the people, experiences and everyday blessings that make life special. Best of all, this project works for nearly every age group and can become a tradition your family looks forward to each November.

What you'll need A few small fallen branches A sturdy vase or container Construction paper in autumn colors Scissors and a hole punch Ribbon, string or twine Markers or colored pencils Decorative stones or pebbles to stabilize the vase Estimated cost: $5–$15, depending on supplies already available at home.

Step 1: Gather your branches Take a family walk around your neighborhood or backyard to look for fallen branches. Choose several sturdy branches with smaller offshoots that will hold paper leaves. Avoid removing branches from living trees, and check park rules before collecting natural materials. Place the branches inside a vase and secure them with decorative stones.

Step 2: Create your leaves Draw leaf shapes on construction paper and cut them out. Older children can trace and cut their own, while parents can prepare shapes for preschoolers. Punch a small hole near the top of each leaf and attach a short piece of ribbon or string.

Step 3: Share what you're thankful for Each family member writes or draws something they're grateful for on a leaf. Encourage specific answers. Instead of simply writing "family," a child might write, "I'm thankful Dad reads to me every night." Younger children can dictate their thoughts to an adult.

Step 4: Watch your tree grow Add one leaf per family member each day leading up to Thanksgiving. By the holiday, your tree will be filled with colorful reminders of the people and moments that matter.

Step 5: Make it part of Thanksgiving dinner Place the tree near your dining table and invite guests to contribute leaves. During dinner, read a few aloud. Save the leaves in a scrapbook or envelope to revisit next year.

Creative variation: Turn the project into a kindness tree. On one side of each leaf, write something you're grateful for. On the other, write one kind action you can take for someone else. The finished project becomes more than seasonal décor. It's a visual reminder that gratitude grows when families practice it together.

Some of the most meaningful holiday memories aren't about presents or elaborate celebrations. They're about traditions: Grandma's famous pie, a favorite family movie, handwritten recipes or the stories everyone tells around the Thanksgiving table. As families grow and change, maintaining these connections becomes increasingly important. November offers the perfect opportunity to bring generations together and create traditions children will carry into adulthood.

Preserve a family recipe Ask grandparents or older relatives to share a favorite holiday recipe. Instead of simply copying the ingredients, invite children to cook alongside them. Take photographs, record the recipe and write down the story behind it. Was it passed down through generations? Did it originate in another country? Was it created during a memorable family gathering? These details turn ordinary recipes into family history.

Record family stories

Make room for long-distance relatives

Children are often fascinated by what life was like when their parents and grandparents were young.

Not every family member can travel for the holidays.

Set aside time to ask questions about childhood, school, family traditions and holiday celebrations.

Schedule a video call, share digital photographs or invite relatives to contribute a favorite recipe to a family cookbook.

Use a phone to record short interviews, with permission, or create a handwritten family memory book.

Children can also create handmade cards or short video messages for grandparents who live far away.

You might be surprised by the stories that emerge.

Welcome new traditions

Create an annual family photograph

Families change through marriages, births, moves and other life transitions.

Choose one location and take a photograph every Thanksgiving. Over time, these pictures become a visual history of your family.

Rather than insisting every holiday look exactly like the past, invite new family members to share their own customs. Blending traditions can create a richer celebration.

Include grandparents, cousins and even pets whenever possible.

Focus on connection, not perfection

Start a shared service tradition

The holidays don't need to be elaborate to be meaningful.

Volunteering together creates memories while reinforcing family values.

A shared meal, a familiar story or a quiet afternoon baking cookies can become a treasured memory.

Consider supporting a Houston charity, organizing a food drive or preparing supplies for a community organization.

The greatest gift one generation can give another is often time: time to listen, time to laugh and time to pass along the stories that make a family unique.

Choose an activity that accommodates different ages and physical abilities.

The Real Cost of Raising Kids in Houston Where Families Can Save Without Cutting Corners By R.H. Guerra

If you've ever wondered why your family's budget seems to disappear faster than it used to, you're certainly not alone. From daycare and groceries to school supplies, extracurricular activities and medical expenses, raising children has become increasingly expensive. And new research suggests the financial commitment is even greater than many parents realize. The numbers may surprise you A 2026 analysis by LendingTree estimates that raising a child from birth through age 18 now costs approximately $303,418 nationally, excluding college expenses. That's an average of nearly $16,900 annually. Closer to home, a SmartAsset analysis reported that raising a child in the Houston metropolitan area costs more than $22,600 annually under its model, representing a 3.4% increase from the previous year. These studies use different household assumptions and methods, so the estimates shouldn't be compared directly. But both highlight the growing financial pressure on families. For Houston parents balancing mortgages, car payments, education expenses and retirement savings, these numbers can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, there are practical ways to reduce expenses without sacrificing your child's opportunities.

1. Rethink extracurricular spending SPECIAL ADVERTISING | TOP SCHOOLS

Houston families have access to an incredible range of activities, including competitive sports, dance, music lessons, tutoring and enrichment programs. But participating in several activities simultaneously can become expensive. Instead of enrolling children in everything that interests them, consider choosing one primary activity per season. Explore programs through YMCA of Greater Houston, local recreation centers and school-sponsored clubs. Ask about sibling discounts, scholarships and reducedcost introductory programs. 2. Take advantage of Houston's free educational resources Public libraries are among the most valuable resources available to families. The Houston Public Library and Harris County Public Library offer books, digital resources and educational programming. Families can also explore free outdoor learning experiences at Houston parks and nature destinations. Before paying for additional enrichment activities, investigate what your community already provides. 3. Make childcare costs a priority For families with infants and preschoolers, childcare can be one of the largest monthly expenses. According to an October 26 report from ABC13 Houston, infant daycare in Texas averages just over $45 per day in the data cited by the station. Actual rates vary significantly by location and provider. Parents should compare licensed providers, ask about sibling discounts and investigate employer dependentcare benefits. Eligible families may also qualify for assistance through Texas Workforce Commission childcare programs. Visit Texas Workforce Commission or dial 211 to explore available assistance. 4. Save on groceries without sacrificing nutrition Feeding growing children, especially teenagers, can strain the grocery budget. Create a weekly meal plan based on store promotions and ingredients already available at home. Buy frequently used staples in larger quantities when the unit price makes sense, and prepare extra portions for lunches. Houston grocery stores such as H-E-B, Kroger and ALDI offer weekly specials worth comparing. Involve older children in meal planning and grocery budgeting. It's a practical opportunity to teach financial responsibility.

23

Houston Family Magazine

5. Buy smart when kids outgrow everything Children can move through clothing sizes, sports equipment and toys surprisingly quickly. Consider neighborhood resale groups, consignment shops and secondhand sporting goods stores. Organize clothing exchanges with friends whose children are different ages. For expensive purchases, consider whether borrowing, renting or buying used makes more sense. Always check recalls and current safety guidance before purchasing secondhand children's equipment, particularly car seats and cribs. 6. Make family entertainment more affordable A fun weekend doesn't have to involve expensive tickets or restaurant meals. Houston offers parks, museums with selected free admission opportunities, community festivals and outdoor attractions. Plan one paid family experience each month and balance it with lower-cost activities. Picnics, family bike rides and backyard movie nights can be just as memorable as expensive outings. 7. Don't forget your own financial future Parents naturally want to give their children every opportunity, but spending shouldn't come at the expense of long-term financial security. Maintain an emergency savings goal, contribute toward retirement when possible and avoid accumulating high-interest debt for optional expenses. Remember, children benefit from financially stable parents as much as they benefit from enrichment programs and memorable experiences. The bigger picture Raising children in Houston is a significant financial responsibility, but the most expensive choices aren't necessarily the best ones. Children need love, stability, encouragement, education and opportunities to explore their interests. With thoughtful spending, community resources and realistic expectations, parents can provide those essentials while building a more secure financial future for the entire family.

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW AND HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR THEIR CHILDREN

For thousands of Houston families, the 2026–2027 school year has brought more than new teachers, classrooms and schedules. Changes in staffing, campus budgets and educational programs have raised important questions about what students can expect from their schools. Houston Independent School District (HISD), the largest school district in Texas, has been navigating declining enrollment and financial adjustments. For parents, the challenge is understanding what these changes mean for their children — and knowing how to make their voices heard.

What's happening in Houston ISD?

Pay attention to your child's experience

According to reporting by the Houston Chronicle in October, HISD terminated or reassigned at least 360 employees this fall as the district adjusted staffing to reflect lower-than-expected enrollment. The district had initially projected losing approximately 4,000 students during the 2026–2027 school year. However, enrollment declines have been significantly larger than anticipated. Some campuses have experienced staffing reductions, while others have seen changes affecting programs such as choir, debate, journalism and other enrichment opportunities.

Not every school change is immediately obvious. Children may notice that a favorite teacher has left, an elective is no longer available or classroom routines have changed.

HISD maintains that adjusting staffing and spending is necessary to protect its financial position and prioritize classroom instruction. In a September statement, district officials reported an estimated fund balance of approximately $730 million and said they were working to align expenses with available resources. For parents, however, the most important question remains: How will these changes affect my child's education?

Why enrollment matters Public school funding in Texas depends partly on student attendance. When enrollment declines, districts can experience reduced revenue, creating pressure to adjust budgets. Schools may respond by changing staffing assignments, combining classes or reviewing programs. Not every campus will experience the same changes, making it especially important for parents to stay informed about their individual schools.

Five questions every parent should ask Whether your child attends HISD or another Greater Houston school district, consider asking these questions during parentteacher conferences or campus meetings: 1. Has my child's class size changed? Ask whether staffing adjustments have affected student-to-teacher ratios or instructional support. 2. Are academic programs being reduced? Find out whether tutoring, advanced coursework, electives or extracurricular activities are changing. 3. What support is available for struggling students? Ask about intervention programs, reading assistance, math support and counseling services. 4. How are students with disabilities being supported? Families with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) should understand how staffing or campus changes may affect services required by their child's plan.

Ask open-ended questions about their school day. "What's different about school this semester?" "Do you feel like you're getting the help you need?" "Is there anything you're worried about?" Listen carefully, especially if your child begins showing frustration, anxiety or declining academic performance.

Know your rights and available resources Parents have the right to ask questions about their children's education and participate in school-related discussions. For students receiving special education services, schools must follow applicable federal and state requirements, including implementing each student's IEP. If parents believe services are not being delivered appropriately, they can request an IEP meeting and document their concerns. The Texas Education Agency provides information about parental rights, special education and school accountability.

How Houston parents can advocate effectively Start at the campus level. Schedule a meeting with your child's teacher or principal and explain your concerns clearly. Whenever possible, focus on specific issues rather than general frustrations. For example, instead of saying, "The school isn't supporting my child," explain that your child has missed scheduled tutoring sessions or that a particular program has been discontinued. Keep records of important communications and follow up in writing when necessary. Parents can also attend school board meetings, review district budgets and participate in parent organizations. HISD provides information about meeting agendas and public participation through its Board Meetings website. Public-comment registration requirements and deadlines apply.

What about other Houston-area districts? Families in Katy ISD, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Spring Branch ISD and other surrounding districts should also monitor district announcements and campus communications. Although these districts operate independently, statewide funding challenges and enrollment changes can affect school planning throughout Texas. Parents should avoid assuming that changes reported in HISD are occurring in every district.

5. How will families receive updates? Ask whether changes will Staying involved makes a difference be communicated through email, parent meetings or the school's Houston's educational landscape continues to evolve, and families deserve clear information about decisions affecting their children. website. The most effective approach is to stay informed, communicate regularly with educators and advocate constructively when concerns arise. Strong schools depend on collaboration between parents, teachers, administrators and communities. Whatever changes lie ahead, one thing remains constant: Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed.

THE HOLIDAY SQUEEZE How Houston Parents Can Make the Season Magical Without Going Broke BY ROSENDO GUERRA

The holiday season is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. But for many Houston parents, November also marks the beginning of a financial juggling act. Between Thanksgiving groceries, Christmas gifts, school celebrations, holiday travel and family entertainment, expenses can add up quickly. And with children exposed to endless gift ideas on social media, television and in stores, keeping holiday expectations realistic can feel like another full-time job. The good news? Creating a memorable holiday season doesn't require an unlimited budget. A little creativity and thoughtful planning can go a long way.

Start with one holiday budget — not several

Rethink the gift-giving tradition

One of the biggest mistakes families make is budgeting separately for gifts, meals, decorations and activities without considering the total cost. Instead, decide what you can comfortably afford for the entire season.

Not every present needs to come from a store.

For example, a family with a $750 holiday budget might divide it this way: Category/Budget Gifts for children and family $350 Thanksgiving and holiday meals $150 Family entertainment $100 Decorations and miscellaneous $50 Unexpected expenses $100 Total $750 This is simply an example. The right budget is one that doesn't require carrying expensive credit card debt into January. Talk to kids about expectations early Children naturally associate the holidays with gifts, excitement and surprises. But parents don't have to fulfill every wish list. Before shopping begins, explain that your family will be choosing gifts thoughtfully this year. Consider asking each child to identify something they really want, something they need and an experience they'd enjoy. For older children and teens, holiday budgeting can become a valuable financial lesson. Give them a spending limit for gifts they purchase for others and encourage them to compare prices. Take advantage of free Houston holiday traditions Houston offers plenty of ways to celebrate without spending a fortune. The annual H-E-B Thanksgiving Day Parade returns to downtown Houston on November 26, 2026, beginning at 9 a.m. Families can enjoy the spectacle from public viewing areas without purchasing reserved seating. Neighborhood light displays, public parks, library activities and at-home holiday movie nights can also create lasting memories. Check Houston Public Library and Harris County Public Library for free seasonal programming.

Consider gifting experiences instead of objects. A homemade certificate for a parent-child breakfast date, a family camping night or a special outing can be just as meaningful as another toy. For grandparents, create a photo calendar or recipe collection featuring family favorites. Encourage siblings to exchange handmade gifts or participate in a family Secret Santa exchange. Shop strategically, not emotionally November sales can be tempting, especially when retailers advertise limited-time offers. Before purchasing, compare prices across stores such as H-E-B, Target and Walmart. Make a list before browsing and avoid purchasing items simply because they're discounted. Remember that a 40% discount isn't a savings if you weren't planning to buy the item. Give children the gift of giving The holidays provide an opportunity to teach generosity. Let children help select groceries for a food drive, donate gently used toys to an organization accepting them or volunteer with a local charity. The Houston Food Bank offers ways for families to support neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Helping others can shift the focus from receiving gifts to appreciating what we already have. Create memories that don't come with a price tag Ask adults what they remember most about childhood holidays, and many will mention traditions rather than presents. Perhaps it was baking cookies with Grandma, decorating the tree together or watching a favorite holiday movie in pajamas. Those moments don't require elaborate planning or expensive purchases. This year, Houston parents can give themselves permission to simplify. The magic of the holidays isn't found in the number of presents under the tree. It's found in the people gathered around it.

Thanksgiving isn't just for family gatherings. Friendsgiving — a relaxed celebration with your favorite people — is the perfect excuse to get together before the holiday rush. Whether you're in middle school, high school or getting ready for college, hosting Friendsgiving doesn't require a fancy dinner or a huge budget. Here's how to plan a celebration everyone will remember. Keep the guest list manageable Invite six to ten friends for a comfortable gathering. Choose a date early, since November calendars fill quickly with school activities, sports and family travel. Make it a potluck The easiest way to keep costs down is to ask everyone to contribute something. Create a shared sign-up list so you don't end up with six desserts and no main dish. Nobody has to cook a turkey. Pizza, sliders, mac and cheese, pasta and homemade cookies are perfectly acceptable Friendsgiving food. Ask guests about allergies and dietary restrictions in advance. Create a fun atmosphere Use inexpensive decorations, battery-operated candles and a playlist everyone can contribute to. A photo corner with fall decorations makes a fun addition. Budget idea: Spend $15–$25 on decorations and let guests bring food. Plan a few activities Try a gratitude jar where everyone writes something positive about another guest. Other ideas include a trivia competition, board games, karaoke or a funny holiday-themed photo challenge. For a meaningful twist, invite everyone to bring a shelf-stable food donation for a local charity. Keep it comfortable Friendsgiving should feel welcoming, not competitive. Make sure everyone has a place to sit, offer nonalcoholic drinks and avoid putting pressure on friends to spend money. If you're hosting at home, coordinate plans with your parents, including transportation and pickup times. Remember what matters The best part of Friendsgiving isn't the menu or decorations. It's spending time with people who support you, make you laugh and help you feel like yourself. Take pictures, enjoy the food and make memories before the holiday season gets busy. Who knows? Your Friendsgiving might become a tradition that continues long after graduation.
