The FIFA Fan Festival in EaDo is the center of Houston’s World Cup celebration. Families can watch matches on large screens, enjoy music and food, and soak up the excitement of fans from around the world. Because attendance can be heavy, especially for high-profile matches, parents should plan ahead, arrive early and have a backup plan if the venue reaches capacity.

Families who want the atmosphere without driving into central Houston can look for community watch parties. Sugar Land Town Square, for example, is hosting free tournament viewing parties with an outdoor screen, live entertainment, international food vendors and family-friendly activities, though registration may be required.

Bring refillable water bottles, sunscreen, hats, portable fans and comfortable shoes. For younger children, consider attending earlier matches or daytime cultural activities rather than the most crowded evening games.

Turn Each Match Into a Mini Culture Lesson Before watching a game, let kids find each country on a map.

Learn one greeting in that country’s language, try a traditional snack, or look up a famous landmark. Houston’s diversity makes this especially fun: families can often pair a match with a meal from a local restaurant representing one of the teams.

Create a simple “World Cup passport” at home. Kids can stamp or sticker each country they watch, write down the final score, and add one fun fact.

Explore Soccer-Inspired Houston World Cup fun is popping up beyond the stadium. Houston has soccer-themed murals, public art, exhibits and photo spots around the city, including installations connected to local artists and cultural spaces.

Every Houston parent knows the routine. It starts with the best intentions—head outside early, spend the day at the park, maybe visit the splash pad. Then by noon the temperature is pushing the upper 90s, the humidity feels like a sauna, and everyone is racing back to the air conditioning.

Four No-Bake Summer Recipes Kids Can Make

When Houston temperatures climb into the triple digits, the last thing parents want to do is turn on the oven. These refreshing, no-bake recipes are easy enough for little hands to help prepare, healthy enough to feel good about serving, and delicious enough that the whole family will ask for seconds.

Summer in Houston is all about finding ways to stay cool. While backyard barbecues and pool parties have their place, some of the best family memories are made right in the kitchen—especially when kids are invited to help.

Cooking together teaches valuable life skills like measuring, following directions, practicing patience, and trying new foods. Best of all, children are often more willing to eat healthy snacks when they've helped prepare them.

Here are four refreshing recipes perfect for busy summer afternoons. Adult supervision is recommended for cutting fruit and using kitchen appliances.

These recipes can be made almost entirely from one grocery trip. Shop your neighborhood farmers market or produce section for the freshest seasonal fruit, and let children pick one "new-to-them" fruit to taste each week.

Local favorites like peaches, watermelon, blueberries and Texas-grown tomatoes are at their peak during July.

Berry Blast Frozen Yogurt Bark Prep Time: 10 minutes Freeze Time: 3 hours Serves: 6–8 Ingredients 2 cups vanilla Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons honey (optional) ½ cup blueberries ½ cup sliced strawberries ¼ cup raspberries 2 tablespoons granola 1 tablespoon mini chocolate chips (optional) Directions 1.Line a baking sheet or tray with parchment paper.

A Parent's Guide to Knowing When a Change Might Be the Right Move

For many Houston parents, choosing a school isn't a one-time decision—it's an ongoing conversation that evolves as children grow.

A child who thrives in one learning environment during kindergarten may have very different academic, social or emotional needs by middle school or high school.

Houston offers families an abundance of educational options. Alongside highly rated public school districts like Katy ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Conroe ISD, Tomball ISD, Spring Branch ISD, and Clear Creek ISD, the region is home to more than 300 independent and faithbased private schools. With so many choices, it's natural for parents to wonder: How do I know if it's time to consider making a change?

The answer isn't about which type of school is "better." Outstanding students emerge from both public and private schools every year. Instead, the question is whether your child's current environment is the best fit for who they are today—and who they're becoming.

Start by Looking Beyond Grades

Anxiety Is Affecting Learning

Many parents begin thinking about private school after a disappointing report card. While academics are certainly important, grades alone rarely tell the whole story.

Instead, ask yourself:

School should be challenging—but it shouldn't be a constant source of fear.

Does my child enjoy going to school?

Are they challenged without feeling overwhelmed?

From Carpool to Campus Helping Your Child Transition to College While Navigating Life as a New Empty Nester

You've spent years packing lunches, helping with homework, cheering from the sidelines, and reminding them—again—to clean their room. Then, almost overnight, you're loading everything they own into the car, taking one last family photo outside a residence hall, and driving home with an empty back seat.

For many Houston families, late summer marks one of parenting's biggest milestones: sending a child to college. It's a season filled with pride, excitement, anticipation—and often, unexpected grief.

Whether your student is headed across town to the University of Houston, to Texas A&M University, The University of Texas at Austin, or across the country, the transition is significant for everyone involved. While your child is learning how to live independently, you're learning how to redefine your role as a parent.

The good news? This next chapter can be one of the most rewarding—for both of you.

Remember: You're Not Losing Your Child It's easy to think of move-in day as an ending, but it's more accurate to see it as a beginning.

Your child still needs you. They just need you differently.

Instead of reminding them to finish homework, you may become the person they call for advice about choosing classes, managing a roommate conflict, or figuring out how to cook chicken without setting off the smoke alarm.

Your job shifts from managing their daily life to becoming a trusted coach.

That transition isn't always easy, but it's a sign that you've been successful. Independence is the goal you've been working toward since the day they took their first steps.

Prepare for More Than Dorm Shopping Most families spend weeks buying extra-long sheets, storage bins and desk lamps.

Just as important are the conversations that happen before move-in.

Talk openly about: Budgeting and managing money Laundry and basic household chores Personal safety Time management Healthy relationships Alcohol and substance use Mental health resources Asking for help when needed Rather than giving one long lecture, spread these conversations out over the summer. They'll feel more natural—and your child is more likely to remember them.

Teach Life Skills Before They Leave Many students arrive on campus academically prepared but lacking everyday life skills.

Can your teen: Schedule a doctor's appointment?

Cook three or four basic meals?

Read a bank statement?

Sew on a button?

Use a calendar to manage deadlines?

Practicing these skills at home builds confidence long before the first day of classes.

Let Them Solve Problems One of the hardest parts of parenting a college student is resisting the urge to step in immediately.

When your child calls because they received a disappointing grade or are frustrated with a roommate, try asking questions before offering solutions.

"What do you think you'll do?"

"What options have you considered?"

"How can I support you?"

These conversations help students develop resilience and critical thinking—qualities they'll need long after graduation.

Expect an Emotional Roller Coaster Parents often imagine they'll cry during move-in.

What surprises many is how emotional the weeks afterward can feel.

The house is quieter.

Dinner requires fewer plates.

Laundry suddenly takes half the time.

Even families who looked forward to this milestone can experience sadness, loneliness or a sense of lost purpose.

Those feelings are completely normal.

Give yourself permission to miss your child while also celebrating their independence.

Avoid the "Fix Everything" Trap When your student calls with a problem, your instinct may be to solve it immediately.

June 2026 Fourth Saturday Phenology Walk Discover the hidden seasonal rhythms of nature firsthand on our guided Phenology Walks, where we track the life cycles of different plants across ecosystems, from the first spring bud burst to winter dormancy. You’ll learn how shifting weather patterns and climate change influence the timing of these important events in our local ecosystems and how you can become a community scientist, contributing vital data from your own backyard to a global research initiative.

Smither Park

Smither Park is a creative urban space that has developed with the help of artists and friends. Visionary artist and builder Dan Phillips worked alongside the late Stephanie Smither to design Smither Park in the memory of her late husband, John H. Smither.
