As we celebrate our Independence as a nation this month, I can't help bu t wonder what our Fore Fathers would think of the modern world. With all of the advances of technology and medicine, commerce and industry, in many ways, I think they were the ones who had it right. As you know, at HFM, we do not tackle politics or religion as topics of discussion. There are many other outlets that thrive on this type of content, and we have purposely steered clear of the controversy. As parents, we have enough to worry about, right? BUT, this month, I find that the lines are becoming more and more blurred. It is getting harder and harder not to discuss them. That being said, this issue is focused on education, in many forms. It's focused on summer fun, despite the record heat. It's focused on tracing our roots and finding our people. It's focused on family getaways and get togethers.

Now I know this is an UGLY thought, but we are HALF WAY through summer (AAAGGHHHH!!) Back to school for many of us is just around the corner in mid-August. So, plan for some fun these last precious weeks. Take that trip. See old friends and family. Plan some projects with your kids. Make some memories. While we may not talk about politics or religion, we are thankful to all the brave men & women who serve and have served to protect us and keep our country safe. You are a true American treasure.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR

VOICE

HEARD With the overturning of Roe vs Wade and the continuing gun violence, I thought as we celebrate the birthday of our nation, this is a great opportunity to talk about how we can positively affect change in our community. First, is to educate ourselves and our children. Next, is to take positive action and speak to the people that we elect to be our voices. Here's an excerpt from Hunter White at Southern University. I think he offers some great thoughts. Who Represents me?

The first step to getting involved with the political process is discovering who represents you. Surprisingly, while many people are informed about the presidential elections, the people who affect us most in this state are largely unknown. Every person in this state is represented by a state senator and state representatives. To discover who represents you, open up your laptop and Google “who represents me.” It’s that easy. Once you have entered the address of the county where you are registered to vote, you will be given the contact information for your state repetitive. Making Contact

SUMMER CAMP

Once you know who represents you and how to contact them, it is helpful to do a bit of searching about their record, political positions, and party affiliation. All of this can be accomplished by a few minutes of Googling. Once you have an idea of who your state representatives are and what their positions are, you should craft the positions you want to advocate for to fit their ideology. Sometimes this is easy, like focusing on the fiscal responsibility of criminal justice reform for a Republican, or highlighting the constitutional protections guaranteeing free expression to a Democrat. Once you have your position tailored to appeal to your state representative, contact their office by phone or email, and let them know who you are, a little about yourself, and ask to speak with your state representative about their legislative priorities for January 2017, and about what they accomplished in 2015. Be polite, be persistent, and let them talk. You may have to reach out more than once to get an actual meeting but be understanding about their schedules, as all of our reps are currently campaigning for reelection. Once you are able to have a meeting with the representative, be engaged, be enthusiastic, and be an active listener. Once they have answered some questions about what they have accomplished, and what they plan on accomplishing in the future, bring up your concerns. Let them know you represent a group of likeminded people in their district, and relate your argument as clearly, and succinctly as possible. What does this accomplish?

Many may ask what the point of this exercise is. It’s a lot of work for a thirty-minute conversation with someone who may not agree with your belief. From personal experiences contacting state representatives, lobbying in Austin, and bringing up issues that many may find controversial, I can promise you that your time is not wasted. State representatives are our most direct representatives that the average person can speak with. Letting them know how people in their district feel about issues that are important to them has a profound effect of their understanding of who they represent. Not many people take the time to reach out and speak with them, and when they do, state representatives take notice.

Planting herbs to grow on your kitchen windowsill is an easy task! Even arranging your child’s desk so that it gets natural sunlight can be beneficial to their circadian rhythm.

“Jared,” I complimented my then 10 year old, “You’ve been so organized lately!” A big, giant question mark hovered over his head. “You remembered whose house you’re staying at this weekend! Remember last year? You never knew where you were supposed to go or what you were supposed to bring with you. Remember? Even though I kept that calendar up on the fridge?” He finally understood the compliment, but with a caveat: “Well, third grade was a lot of pressure.” Now that he is older and has at least as many electronic devices as I do, if not more, he’s supposed to keep track of all that stuff by himself. And sometimes he even does. More often I get texts asking who is picking him up or when. He comes by it naturally though; I rarely have a ready response. Instead I end up asking him things like, “Do you remember what you did last spring break? Where did you go? Who was with you - me, or your dad?” It’s a fruitless pursuit. He doesn’t remember the details from year to year any better than I do. For those as easily confused as I am, Here are my tips to remembering whether or not you’re bringing your child(ren) with you on your vacation:

Check your child’s school calendar and your own calendar:

Does it follow the public school calendar for your area? If your child or children attend a private school, note that this may vary by year.

Check your divorce decree.

If I had known how useful this document would become over the years, I would have had it laminated. If you are just beginning the custody journey, I highly suggest laminating at least the pages devoted to custody and child support.

Washi tape.

Washi tape is the cure for life, the universe and everything. I like to tape cheery colors on my planner on the non-school times that my son spends with me. I’d do noncheery colors on the weekends and vacation times he spends with his dad...but that would be a little redundant.

Social Media is Your Friend

When all else fails, look back at the pictures! Surely the picture of the happy boy on top of a national monument was taken in two thousand...what was that year again?!? And how many years ago was it? So all I have to do is add five or six years and then…

Plan ahead.

The farther out you make arrangements the more chance your vacation plans come true.

Keep the calendar handy.

I’m not one of those people who will declare that having the perfect planner will “change your life.” I’m just one of those people who has always had a paper planner and shudder to think of the disorganized puddle I would be without one. Not that I’m so organized WITH one. If an online calendar is more your style, consider a shared one with your ex.

Play nice with your ex-spouse and/or child’s other parent.

Oh, I know. It’s MUCH easier to stay angry and bitter forever. But if you can forgive (if not forget) then you can have an extra hand in planning rather than a bitter enemy. And your ex may even answer your multiple, “Is it my turn for spring break this year?” texts faster than you could reasonably dig out the divorce decree. Again. So that’s all I’ve got, folks! In reality, my execution is much less straightforward than my list suggests. It often involves multiple texts to my ex-husband who, to give credit where credit is due, has always been tolerant of my disorganized tendencies and who, to my knowledge, has never used these deficiencies to try and usurp a vacation with either of my kids.

Make your heritage come alive By Janeen Lewis

enealogy for kids doesn’t have to be boring. Instead of poring over microfiche and birth and death records, a kidfriendly approach to family history will entice young genealogists to learn about where they came from.

Here are some fun ways to pique your family’s interest about its past.

Start with Stories Kids love stories about themselves and family. Capitalize on their curiosity by telling them oral traditions, or stories that have been passed down verbally by your family. Here are some ways to connect them to their ancestors: Start with stories about them. Talk about the day they were born, when they first walked and talked, and the funny things they did as toddlers and preschoolers. Share stories about their parents and grandparents when they were young. They love to hear about the time a parent dealt with a schoolyard bully or how grandparents met and married.

Share what technology, cars and clothes were like when their descendants were young.

Here are some ways to engage kids with props:

Introduce them to the celebrities of the family. The rest of the world may not know them, but the entire family recognizes the humorous, memorable or notorious things they did.

Draw kids in with photographs. They love to see dad when he still had hair or mom when she wore an eighties hairdo. Black and white photos are intriguing because of the differences in fashion, cars and homes.

Play old and new family videos. Compare how the video technology has changed over time.

Make a list of family heirlooms and talk about why each is an important memento.

Give It Props

Dig out old technology like rotary phones, old typewriters, and ham radios. Show photos or videos of a jukebox.

Like actors on a stage, present your family history with props. Search attics and look for important family pieces like jewelry, furniture, clothes, books, handmade quilts, magazines, and old toys.

Visit a museum virtually to look at historic forms of transportation such as steam locomotives, Model Ts and horse drawn carriages.

Even preschoolers can fill in a simple family tree template, and there are a wide range of free printable ones on the Internet.

When I was little, I remember walking around my grandparents’ farm and exploring the smokehouse and hen house and watching my grandmother get water from a working well.

To kids, research sounds boring. But solving a mystery is exciting. Interest kids by uncovering the family history like a detective.

Try these ideas to capture your lineage creatively: Represent your family tree with photographs and portraits, or produce a digital presentation. Create a family crest or duplicate your own if one already exists. Frame it for a virtual family reunion or to display in your home. Visit a cemetery and make grave stone rubbings. Paint portraits from family photographs. Explore historical handwriting by looking at copies of the Constitution, Declaration of Independence or old family letters. Then let you child explore cursive or hand-lettering with a calligraphy pen or quill. Design and sew a family quilt with squares of material from family baby blankets, clothes and other quilts. Make DIY silhouettes using photographs and frame them or turn them into cameos. There are several tutorials on Youtube.

Write it Down Older kids may enjoy these written ways to document family history: Interview the oldest person in the family and write their biography or write summaries of his or her favorite times in history. Writing “I Am From” poems can be fun and interesting for all ages. There are several formulas on the Internet to try. Compile a family cookbook.

Here are some ways to create a tangible connection to the past through terrain, buildings, graves and neighborhoods: Tour the family cemetery and study the gravestones. Study the death and birth dates on the headstones and talk about what the symbols mean. Take a self-guided walking tour of the town where your family originated. Share why buildings were important. Visit ruins of cities or farms where your family started.

Do Old-Time Chores & Hobbies Was your great-aunt a master seamstress? Did your greatgrandparents produce all their own food from a working farm? Try these ideas to share your ancestor’s pastimes with kids: Complete a starter cross-stitch or sewing kit for kids. Learn to knit from a DIY video on Youtube. Purchase a starter woodworking kit online and build something. Did you know you can churn butter in a Mason jar or make ice cream in a resealable plastic bag? Allrecipes.com has recipes for both. Bake and cook from scratch using family recipes. Grow a vegetable garden and use the produce to make dinner.

Explore baby books and old Bibles that include important dates from your family’s lineage. Discover what first and last family names mean.

With teens, investigate family documents such as birth, death, and marriage certificates. Visit websites like Billiongraves.com and Findagrave.com if you have ancestors that lived far away. Using Findagrave, I was able to find my grandparents’ gravestone and a view of their family cemetery in another state online.

Learning about family history can be a rich, rewarding experience with the right approach. Begin a journey through the past with your children, and start a tradition for generations to come.

Nonprofits are the backbone of our communities as they provide essential and invaluable resources to the most vulnerable and under-represented populations. Houston is home to hundreds of organizations, many of which were homegrown in the greater Houston area. While some of the larger organizations have become household names, many small but mighty nonprofits work tirelessly for underrepresented groups throughout the city. Here are a few local nonprofit organizations that may be lesser-known (for now!) but are impacting the lives of those they serve each day.

Tintero Projects

ChildBuilders

Gigi’s Playhouse

Founded by internationally-renowned Texas Poet Laureate and educator Lupe Méndez, Tintero Projects / Proyectos Tintero is a Texas-based literary organization that aims to promote writing & reading opportunities for emerging Latinx poets and writers in the Houston – Galveston/Gulf Coast Region. The organization has a small team of three writers, including Mendez's wife, award-winning author, playwright and poet Jasminne Mendez. Together, the artistically passionate duo travels throughout Texas and beyond, sharing their individual and collective literary works.

ChildBuilders was founded in 1974 by seven women with shared concerns about Houston's growing global medical footprint but lack of treatment options for pediatric mental health disorders. Now, 45 years later, the organization has evolved from expanding treatment options for children with mental illness to preventing the abuse and trauma that contributes to mental illness in today's youth. The organization's mission is to promote mental health and prevent abuse by empowering children, parents, and teachers with assertiveness skills, emotional control, empathy, resilience, and the ability to resolve conflict nonviolently.

Gigi's Playhouse was created in 2003 and has over 55 brick-and-mortar locations across the United States and Mexico. Gigi's Playhouse Houston joined the local community of nonprofit organizations in 2018 as the 40th location. The organization's mission is all about education and inclusivity: to change how the world views Down syndrome and send a global message of acceptance for all. Down syndrome is the largest chromosomal disability in the United States. Gigi's Playhouse Houston provides free programs and resources to families from prenatal diagnosis to career skills, maximizing opportunities for daily achievement and lasting acceptance. The organization's lifetime commitment to the families they serve ensures guidance and tools for success and empowerment, one child at a time.

Tintero Projects is dedicated to helping create a platform for Latinx writers and Writers of Color to thrive in the art. To elevate their efforts, Tintero Projects frequently partner with other arts organizations in the community such as Inprint to host workshops and seminars for young and blossoming writers in Houston. As explained by Tintero Projects, "The word tintero is Spanish for inkwell, an old school container once used to house the ink for a pen. The image was selected as a way to show that this project, this movement is about providing resources for the writer."

In the last 12 months, ChildBuilders has served more than 32,000 children, 400 caretakers, and 500 educators through Houston public and private education systems and fellow organizations. "We cannot prevent all childhood adversity," shares ChildBuilders Executive Director Amanda Siroosian, MPH. "Instead, we arm children with skills that can reduce their risk of trauma, increase their resilience to traumatic events, and increase their awareness of their rights and responsibilities when it comes or keeping themselves and their communities safe."

She always looks forward to our Saturday morning trip to GiGi's where she gets to see friends and participate in fun programs tailored to her unique skills and abilities. It has also been a tremendous resource for us as parents. GiGi's Playhouse and the community helped us go from "Why us?" to "Wow! Us!" "How lucky are we?"" -The Currie Family

Compudot Compudopt was founded in 2007 by Jonathan Osha, believing that every child deserves equal access to education and opportunity. Today, the organization has expanded its services nationwide, including a thriving office in Houston, Texas. Compudot's mission is to provide equal technology access and education to under-resourced youth and their families regardless of their economic status. The organization's path to fulfilling its mission is simple: take lightly used computers, wipe them clean and load them with over 100 educational games and apps that don't require internet access to function. These devices become a direct pathway to future success for young learners while also demonstrating good environmental stewardship by Compudot's partner organizations. As of 2021, Compudot has delivered over 100,000 hours of technology education to greater than 40,000 households, impacting nearly 140,000 individuals across the United States. "True digital equity requires more than just a computer. Connectivity and digital literacy are essential to close the gap, ensuring families have access to the wealth of content, knowledge, and support that is otherwise beyond reach."

Recipe for Success Foundation Recipe for Success Foundation is dedicated to combating childhood obesity by changing how children understand, appreciate and eat their food. The organization provides educational resources to the community, mobilizing its members to provide healthier diets for children. Well into its second decade of service, Recipe for Success Foundation has empowered more than 50,000 children in Houston and surrounding areas with essential knowledge tools for healthier living. Founder, President & CEO, Gracie Cavnar says the organization is focused on the future of health for children. IWRITE Since 2009, iWRITE has developed curriculums that build student confidence and spark students’ imaginations. With creative writing/illustration workshops and publishing opportunities, students move beyond the standardized classroom, learn to express their ideas, and discover their voice. Children’s author Melissa Williams Murphy originally founded the organization as “READ3Zero,” using her background in psychology and counseling to promote literacy among Houston’s at-risk youth. The popular question that she continued to receive (can kids be authors too?) during her classroom visits inspired the organization’s publishing contest, I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids. Her writing and publishing exercises resonated with students and motivated her to re-focus the organization’s mission on high-impact writing activities. READ3Zero became iWRITE in 2016 and launched the organization’s mascot, “i” The Guy, and has used its after-school workshops, camps, journals, a writing and illustration contest, and mentorship programs to help students develop their own creative writing and art skills and experience the feeling of success that comes with becoming an author and illustrator.

Mason Makes Money Fund One of the newest nonprofits in the Houston market is Mason Makes Money Fund, founded in 2020 by children's book author of Mason Makes Money, Candace Okin. Okin created the organization to invest in the entrepreneurial efforts of youth ages 7 to 13. Mason Makes Money Fund teaches kids responsibility, augments critical thinking ability, and fosters literacy skills, mathematical comprehension and money management. The nonprofit fulfills its mission through programs and scholarships, equipping youth with skills that will propel their future professional aspirations, encourage positive and productive citizenship, and reinforce the limitlessness of their dreams through entrepreneurial education. Programs and workshops are free and address essential entrepreneurial and financial topics, including marketing, budgeting; customer service; business planning; tax preparation; and more. Okin shares, "The crown jewel of our program is our awarding of micro-grants to three kid entrepreneurs each year for $500 to fund their businesses. I want Mason Makes Money Fund to catalyze youth to be the writers and protagonists of their own stories by supporting their entrepreneurial efforts early on in their lives."

Observe Classes and/or the Lunch Room Observing a class in progress may seem obvious but some parents skip this step. This is a good chance to look at the teacher’s demeanor and expectations in the classroom. The lunch room is an often missed opportunity to get a general feel for the school’s atmosphere. See if it is the type of environment that you would want for your child. Schools will have different rules so observing a classroom in progress may or may not be possible.

Meet the Principal Although some principals may not have time to meet with prospective parents, others may be open to this route. Meeting and talking with a school’s principal will help you determine the atmosphere of the school. Ask yourself if the principal seems approachable and seems to have good leadership qualities.

Tablets, smartphones, television, and video games play a major role in our daily lives. Technology can be a positive thing, but when it dominates our kids’ free time, it’s time to start limiting it. With these easy tips, even reluctant kids may not notice they are cutting down their time spent with technology. 1. Step Outside The easiest way to cut down on screen time is playing outside. They can ride bikes, use sidewalk chalk, take a walk, play catch, or play in the sprinkler. When kids are preoccupied outside they are less likely to think about TV or video games. 2. Set Clear Boundaries Set clear boundaries for your kids when it comes to electronics. Mom of three, Amy Cameron says “Zero screen time is allowed in the morning before school.” Many other parents do not allow any phones or television during meals. It’s also a good idea to set limits on how much screen time is allowed and what time of day. When everyone is on the same page, there is less arguing about putting it down when the daily limit has been reached.

6. Host a PlayDate One way to cut down on time for screens is to host a no-electronics playdate. With friends over, it is easier to find other ways to occupy their time as they socialize and play with their friends. 7. Get Cooking Distract your kids from electronics by keeping them busy in the kitchen. They can help cook and bake and have fun sampling the things they have made themselves. 8. Explore the City Visit the zoo, pretend you are a tourist, go to a neighborhood pool, or local park or attractions with your kids. If they are busy exploring the city, they will not have time for screens.

3. Join Extracuricular Activities Kids who are busy with sports or the arts have less time to play on electronics because their time is spent in practices, games, and performances.

9. Start a Project Come up with a family project for the day to keep the kids screen-free. This could be a big chore like cleaning up the backyard or something fun like an art project or science experiment.

4. Set a Good Example When attempting to limit screen time for your kids, take a look at how much time you spend on screens. Good or bad, our kids learn from our actions and we can set a good example about when it's appropriate to look at our phone and when it’s time to focus on other things.

10. Playa Game Declare it family game day and choose a few board games to play together. You could also try an outside game like hopscotch, foursquare, kickball, or break into teams and have a water balloon fight. Or, teach them to play a card game like rummy or Texas Hold'Em.

5. Earn It “Screen time checklists need to be completed before kids get their devices.” says Anna Schuster, mom of five. Many parents find it helpful to make a list that must be completed before they can have screen time. This may include school work, chores, instrument practice, or reading time.

It’s easy to fill our time with screens because they are enjoyable and take little effort. However, a little bit of effort to plan a few other activities to distract us from our phones and tablets pays off in creating great memories your kids will remember far longer than the video games they played.

PICKLED SHRIMP AND PEACHES WITH SWEET ONION

1 tsp. grated peeled fresh ginger 1 tsp. grated peeled fresh turmeric 1/3 cup fresh orange juice 2 Tbsp. fresh lime juice 4 Tbsp. olive oil ¼ tsp. kosher salt 2 large red grapefruit, peeled, sliced 2 large peaches, cut into thin wedges 2 kiwi, peeled, chopped Flaky sea salt Mint leaves

1. Whisk together grated ginger, turmeric, orange juice, lime juice, olive oil, and salt. 2. Arrange grapefruit, peaches, and kiwi on a large platter or individual plates. Drizzle with dressing and sprinkle with flaky salt and mint leaves.

Skills for Life First aid skills are an important life skill for anyone to have and it is never too early to begin teaching basic skills: 1. Model what to do in an emergency situation by remaining calm Talk with your child about what minor injuries are. 2. Discuss other emergencies like fire safety and broken bones. 3. Use role playing to help kids understand what to do. 4. Set a date on your calendar at least once a year to go over first aid, fire safety, and what to do in an emergency.
