Why tell stories? This is the question that we will be discussing as we move toward the end of the school year. We have read all the major works that we will read this year, and now it’s time to reflect on the importance of literature as a whole. Why do we read? Or, if you hate reading, why do we see movies? In general, why do we tell stories? We are going to watch two films, and you will write a final paper about the question above: Why are stories so important? For your evidence, you will use at least one of the films as well as personal experience and another story or book you have read in class this year, including personal reading. After our second film, we will be having a Socratic Seminar discussion in which you will generate questions as well as answer them, so we will have plenty of time to discuss these ideas, but before we start anything else, brainstorm a list of reasons why stories are important or why we tell ourselves stories:
