Mike Bloomberg on Redlining and His Greenwood Initiative

NEW YORK — Mike Bloomberg has called redlining a disgrace of American history designed to keep Black Americans from gaining wealth. As Mayor, he advocated against predatory lending, and took several actions in the years preceding the mortgage crisis to protect vulnerable New Yorkers from predatory lenders and mortgage foreclosure.

During his time, Mike launched PACE, a $1.35 million initiative to not only combat predatory lending but also provide financial and legal assistance to elderly home homeowners, first-time buyers, fixed-income homeowners, and minority and immigrant homeowners.

As a candidate for president, he has detailed plans for how he will help 1 million more Black families buy a house, and counteract the effects of redlining and the subprime mortgage crisis. His plan will provide down-payment assistance, get millions recognized by credit scoring companies, enforce fair lending laws, reduce foreclosures and evictions, and increase the supply of affordable housing.

Mike’s Greenwood Initiative will address the homeownership gap by creating 1 million more Black homeowners:

Mike will create a Housing Fairness Commission, funded with an initial $10 billion, to work with municipalities and nonprofits on testing policies aimed at reversing the effects of discrimination and expanding programs that work.

It’s time Harris County had a D.A. for all.

Audia was born to her loving parents in a working class community. Her father served as a paratrooper and Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol in Vietnam, followed by a career as an aviation engineer. Her mother was a lifelong educator who taught special needs children for more than thirty years in the public sector. As a woman of color, Audia grew up with a deep appreciation for community and public service while understanding the social and economic issues that plague our society.

Audia attended the University of Rhode Island on a full four-year NCAA College Basketball Scholarship, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management. Afterwards, Audia attended Texas Southern University, Thurgood Marshall School of Law where she earned an academic scholarship and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Her life of public service took shape as a Summer Law Clerk in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. After earning her law degree, Audia worked as a Counsel Fellow for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. She quickly advanced from the duties of a Fellow to a Congressional Staffer managing the House Judiciary Committee Portfolio for the Congresswoman. In approximately 50 hearings, Audia prepared detailed analysis of key legislation affecting various sub-

ject matters, including crime and terrorism, immigration and cybersecurity while effectively communicating the pros and cons of each legislative item to the Congresswoman.

Following her experiences at the United States House of Representatives, Audia joined the Harris County District Attorney’s Office as an Assistant District Attorney where she quickly advanced up the ranks.

A CHAMPION FOR CHANGE

While working in the misdemeanor and felony trial bureau she witnessed courts disproportionately filled with the poor, people of color, intellectually disabled, and people suffering with addiction standing accused of non-violent offenses. It became clear that the criminal justice system was sorely broken and was not working for the benefit of our largest and most vulnerable communities.

Audia is fueled with determination that all citizens should have equal rights and opportunities within the criminal justice system. As a vehicle for change she has launched a grassroots, people-powered campaign that does not accept corporate PAC money.

Harris County deserves to be a national champion

for criminal justice reform, using a modern approach to empower the community. Audia will use strategies that have been proven to: Combat violent crime;

Treat everyone fairly and equally;

Reduce likelihood of future crimes;

Build trust in the District Attorney’s Office;

Rehabilitate non-violent offenders through special programs;

Make Harris County a safer place to raise a family, live and work;

Texas is now the Biggest Battleground State (BBGS) in America because it has the largest Black population in America.

If Texas Democrats invest in registering one million new Black Democratic voters for the 2020 General Election, educating them on the need to Vote the Entire Ballot From Top To Bottom because there will be no straight ticket voting in 2020, and turnout 1.5 million Black Democratic voters in 2020, Democrats will turn Texas Blue.

If Texas Democrats invest in a Black to Blue strategy of voter registration, voter education and Black GOTV, not only will Democrats win the White House, we will

also elect a Democratic United States Senator from Texas, retake the Texas State House, secure a Democratic State House Speaker, send more Texas Democrats to Congress, win statewide executive, regulatory and judicial elections as well as sweep county elections and county judicial races all across Texas.

Black voters, especially Black women, will decide if Texas moves from a battleground state to a solid Blue state in 2020.

Texas will turn Blue in 2020 if Texas (and national) Democratic Party leaders recognize and acknowledge that Black Voters are the Decisive Voters in turning Texas Blue in 2020.

Black voters have been, and still are, the most loyal voting block and constituency in the Texas and national Democratic Party coalition.

If Texas--and national--Democratic Party leaders really want the biggest bang for their investment in winning Texas in 2020, then their priority must be investing in Black voter registration, education and

To do that, the Democratic Party at the national, state and county levels must all hire local Black consultants, policy advisors and field organizers and also invest in local Black media outlets, radio and newspapers, and in mail, robocalls and door knocking in the Black community all across Texas; rural, suburban and urban.

About Judge Alix

Judge Alexandra Smoots-Hogan was born and raised in Southeast Houston, Texas. She is the only child of Sylvia Alexander Smoots, a retired home economics/computer science HISD teacher, and W. Bernard Smoots, a retired marketing consultant.

At a young age, Judge SmootsHogan excelled in academics and was quickly accepted at the Kinkaid School. While at Kinkaid, Judge Smoots-Hogan joined the school's nationally recognized and award-winning policy debate team. It was during her time with the debate team, where solidified her love of the law. Judge Smoots-Hogan travelled across the country with the debate team, bringing home several national speaker and debate awards.

After graduating from the Kinkaid School, Judge Smoots-Hogan moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas at Austin. While in Austin, Judge Smoots-Hogan maintained studies in government and journalism. Judge Smoots-Hogan was also very active in the Student Government at UT Austin.

During her junior year at UT Austin, Judge Smoots-Hogan returned home to Houston to care for her then-ailing father.

Judge Smoots-Hogan completed her undergraduate studies at the University of St. Thomas. Judge SmootsHogan graduated with an Honors degree in Communications, with focus on print and broadcast journalism.

Though Judge Smoots-Hogan had built an appreciation for communications, she returned to her love of the law and was accepted to South Texas College of Law. During her second year of law school, Judge SmootsHogan won a spot on the nationally ranked Trial Advocacy team. During her law school tenure, Judge SmootsHogan won three National Moot Court titles, two speaker awards, and two briefing awards.

After law school, Judge SmootsHogan was asked to join the trial section at Brown McCarroll's Houston Office. Judge Smoots-Hogan spent the next several years making weekly visits to the Courthouse. After several years of practice, Judge Smoots-Hogan began to change her focus to acquiring

additional clients and began the process of entering solo law practice.

In October 2007, Judge SmootsHogan opened her own office for the practice of law. The firm expanded and became known as Smoots-Hogan, Brockman, & Brauchle. Judge Smoots-Hogan actively defended individuals, homeowners, small companies, and municipalities. Licensed to practice throughout the State of Texas and in the Southern District of Texas for the United States District Courts, Judge Smoots-Hogan's practice areas were commercial litigation, construction litigation, real estate law and litigation, insurance law (first-party and third-party claims), U.S.C. 1983 claims, family law and personal injury litigation.

In November 2008, Judge Smoots-Hogan was elected to her first term as Judge of the 164th Civil District Court of Harris County, Texas.

During her first term, Judge SmootsHogan significantly reduced her Court’s docket and presided over almost 100 jury trials. Her most wellknown case from the first term involved cleaning up gang and drug

crime at Haverstock Hills, by signing the first Gang Nuisance Injunction in the State of Texas. In November 2012, Judge Smoots-Hogan was elected to a second term on the bench, receiving the most votes of any other judicial candidate.

Off the bench, Judge SmootsHogan lives with her sons, Aedan (age 11) and Dhani (age 6). The boys are in lower school at The Regis School.

Both boys have an active love of basketball, so most of Judge SmootsHogan’s free time is spent watching lots of basketball. Judge SmootsHogan and her children are long-time members of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church.

Due to her own childhood health issues and family members afflicted with cancer, Judge Smoots-Hogan is avid supporter of children's and cancer charities. Judge Smoots-Hogan is also passionate about the advancement of women in professional careers. Accordingly, Judge Smoots-Hogan routinely speaks to and supports several community organizations geared toward that mission and acts as a mentor for several aspiring women.

Supporting small businesses willing to bring jobs and innovation to Precinct 1.

Identifying investors who can provide access to capital to help new and expanding companies.

Encourage the modernization of our existing business infrastructure, including innovations in advanced manufacturing, transportation and logistics; Working with community colleges to strengthen workforce development programs.

Encouraging partnerships between any future and existing large-scale development projects and workforce development organizations to design training that addresses employment barriers so everyone will have access to job opportu-

nities.

HEALTH & WELLNESS Even with the best medical center in the world, many in Precinct 1 do not have affordable and reliable health care options.

There must be access to mental health care providers who are sensitive to our diversity and able to provide culturally appropriate solutions.

We need to:

Increase our investment in community clinics that offer preventative health care and baseline assessments.

Ensure preventative health care addresses the importance of healthy diets and provides information about assistance programs offered by area agencies.

Judge Maria T. Jackson presided over the 339th State District Felony Court in Houston, Harris County, Texas for 11 years before stepping down to run for county commissioner. She oversaw more than 100 jury trials that ran the gamut from low-level drug offenses to capital murder cases.

While on the bench, Judge Jackson implemented sweeping reforms for how DWI probationers were handled in her court. The changes were so innovative they have since been adopted by the Harris County Probation Department as a best practice countywide.

Judge Jackson was appointed to serve as the presiding Judge in Cameron County, Texas by the chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court.

The United States Secret Service, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the District Attorneys of Alabama, and the National Judicial College selected Judge Jackson as one of twenty-four judges from across the country to receive training at the National Computer Forensics Institute.

In 2003, Judge Jackson was appointed as a full-time municipal court judge for the City of Houston. During her tenure with the City, she also served as a trainer and instructor for the Texas Municipal Courts Education Center.

Prior to taking the bench, she was a municipal bond attorney and a certified mediator.

In memory of her cousin, Commissioner El Franco Lee, who passed way while in office in 2016, Judge Jackson will continue Precinct One’s commitment to quality programs for youth and seniors.

This will include:

Increased funding for after school programs.

Continuation of the popular Street Olympics.

Recreational, health and fitness and more to keep our seniors active and engaged.
