Governor Greg Abbott Honored As Mr. South Texas 2019

Governor Greg Abbott was recently honored as Mr. South Texas 2019 as part of the 122nd Washington's Birthday Celebration in Laredo. To commemorate the honor, the Governor attended the Los Caballeros de la Republica del Rio Grande Cocktail Party Friday evening and also participated in the Mr. South Texas 2019 Anheuser-Busch Washington's Birthday Parade. Following the parade, Governor Abbott delivered remarks at a press conference, during which Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz presented him with the key to the city.

"I am truly honored to receive the key to the great city of Laredo and to have been named this year’s Mr. South Texas," said Governor Abbott. "It is humbling to join the list of those who have received this honor for their incredible impact on this region. Governor Greg Abbott recently delivered a State of the State address at the Houston Business Coalition and C Club Luncheon in Houston.

The Governor spoke about his legislative priorities for the session, including the need for property tax and school finance reform, and discussed the state's continued commitment to recovery efforts for Texans impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

"I’m proud of how this community and those across the impacted regions responded to Hurricane Harvey," said Governor Abbott. "From our first responders and emergency workers to community leaders and faith-based groups — Texans stepped up to help those in need. But there's more we must do to help Texas rebuild. By making disaster preparedness and response an emergency item this session, we are ensuring that the state will continue to invest in recovery efforts and support Texans who are still rebuilding their lives after this devastating storm."

Gov. Abbott Appoints Price To Texas Southern University Board Of Regents

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Ron Price to the Texas Southern University Board of Regents for a term set to expire on February 1, 2023.

Ron Price of Mesquite is the CEO of Genesis RTG, LLC. He previously served as a Dallas Independent School District Board Trustee, representing District 9 for 12 years, serving as president, vice president, and secretary during his time on the board. He served on the Texas Association of School Boards, American Association of School Administrator, National Urban Superintendent Association, and the National Alliance of Black School Educators. In addition, he served as past president of the National Caucus of Young School Board Members, chair-elect of the National Black Caucus School Board Members, and past president of Texas Black Caucus of School Board Members. Price attended Texas Southern University and received a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from Paul Quinn College.

This appointment is subject to Senate confirmation.

Governor Abbott Appoints Busby To The Supreme Court Of Texas previously visited the Richardson Chamber of Commerce and the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce as part of his tour.

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Brett Busby to the Supreme Court of Texas for a term set to expire on December 31, 2020. Busby’s appointment follows the retirement of Justice Phil Johnson.

“It is a distinct honor to appoint Brett Busby to serve on the Supreme Court of Texas,” said Governor Abbott. “Brett’s respect for the Constitution and his understanding that judges say what the law is, not what they would like it to be, will serve the people of Texas well as he ascends to our highest court. I am grateful to Brett for his dedication to the Lone Star State and his unwavering commitment to the rule of law.”

Brett Busby of Houston is a former Justice of the Fourteenth Court of Appeals, having served from June 2012 through December 2018, and previously was a partner at Bracewell & Giuliani LLP, an adjunct professor at The University of Texas School of Law, and a law clerk at the U.S. Supreme Court. He is

board-certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

He is a committee chair for the Texas Access to Justice Commission, the chair of the State Bar of Texas Appellate Section, and a member of the Supreme Court Advisory Committee and the Federalist Society. He is a member and past chair of the State Bar of Texas Committee on Pattern Jury Charges, a former member of the Texas Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, and a former gubernatorial appointee to the Commission to Study and Review Certain Penal Laws. Additionally, he is chair of the Houston Symphony Society Artistic Affairs Committee, a senior fellow of the American Leadership Forum, and a member of the Houston Civic Symphony First Violin Section. He is a board member of Houston Volunteer Lawyers, a former trustee of the Post Oak School in Houston, and an Eagle Scout. A seventh-generation Texan, Busby received a B.A. from Duke University and a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law. This appointment is subject to Senate confirmation.

In 2006, Bethel’s Place, Inc. was born. This community empowerment organization supports job training, job placement, GED prep and testing, after school programs, vocational training and more. In 2011, God made a way for Pastor August to move this organization into a new 56,000 square foot, two-story building, allowing more social service programs to impact the Greater Houston metropolitan area. In PASTOR AUGUST AND HIS WIFE RUBY 2012, the partner entity, Bethel’s Blessed Again Resale Shop was established, providing low-cost clothing options for those in need.

While his hands were certainly full, Pastor August still made global missions a priority. He has traveled to Kenya, Africa, the Czech Republic and beyond, doing evangelism training, medical clinics, and developing church leadership teams. Pastor August is also a published author. Embracing Bootstrap Leadership, an in-depth guide on Christ-centered leadership, was released in 2014.

In case you don’t know, Judge Dedra Davis would have still defeated Republican Judge Brent Gamble in the race for Judge, 270th Civil District Court – even without the 105,158 straight-ticket voting cushion she received from Democratic voters in Harris County, Texas back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election. Here’s why: Dedra Davis received 651,843 overall votes.

When you subtract the 515,812 straight-ticket votes, you come up with 136,031 votes. Com-

paratively speaking, if you subtract the 410,654 straight-ticket votes, Judge Brent Gamble received from his overall vote total of 530,480 you come up with 119,826 votes. So, in essence, even if you stripped away the straight-ticket votes received by Judge Dedra Davis back in 2018 she would have still hypothetically unseated the incumbent by approximately 16,205 votes back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election in my opinion.

Have you heard the name Alfred Homer Bennett before? Well, Federal Judge, Alfred Homer Bennett was born in 1965 in Ennis, Texas. He was nominated by former President Barack Obama back on January 7, 2015, to a seat vacated by Judge Kenneth M. Hoyt to serve as Federal Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. Judge Bennett was confirmed by the Senate on April 13, 2015, and received commission on April 15, 2015.

What about Vanessa D. Gilmore? Have you heard that name before? Well, Federal Judge Vanessa D. Gilmore was born in 1956 in St. Albans, New York. She was nominated by former President William J. Clinton back on March 22, 1994.

She was nominated to a new seat that was authorized by 104 Stat. 5089.

Audia was born to her loving parents in a working class community. Her father served as a paratrooper and Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol in Vietnam, followed by a career as an aviation engineer. Her mother was a lifelong educator who taught special needs children for more than thirty years in the public sector. As a woman of color, Audia grew up with a deep appreciation for community and public service while understanding the social and economic issues that plague our society.

Audia attended the University of Rhode Island on a full four-year NCAA College Basketball Scholarship, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management. Afterwards, Audia attended Texas Southern University, Thurgood Marshall School of Law where she earned an academic scholarship and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Her life of public service took shape as a Summer Law Clerk in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. After earning her law degree, Audia worked as a Counsel Fellow for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

She quickly advanced from the duties of a Fellow to a Congressional Staffer managing the House Judiciary Committee Portfolio for the Congresswoman. In approximately 50 hearings, Audia prepared detailed analysis of key legislation affecting various subject matters, including crime and terrorism, immigration and cybersecurity while effectively communicating the pros and cons of each legislative item to the Congresswoman.

Following her experiences at the United States House of Representatives, Audia joined the Harris County District Attorney’s Office as an Assistant District Attorney where she quickly advanced up the ranks.

While working in the misdemeanor and felony trial bureau she witnessed courts disproportionately filed with the poor, people of color, intellectually disabled, and people suffering with addiction standing accused of non-violent offenses.

It became clear that the criminal justice system was sorely broken and was not working for the benefit of our largest and most vulnerable communities.

Audia is fueled with determination that all citizens should have equal

rights and opportunities within the criminal justice system.

Harris County deserves to be a national champion for criminal justice reform, using a modern approach to empower the community. Audia will use strategies that have been proven, among other things, to: ● Combat serious crime; ● Treat everyone fairly and equally; ● Reduce likelihood of future crimes; ● Build trust in the District Attorney’s Office; ● Rehabilitate non-violent offenders through special programs; ● Make Harris County a safer place to raise a family, live and work; ● Focus juvenile prosecution on rehabilitation rather than punishment; and, ● Seriously address and protect the needs of victims.

Benjamin Banneker, an African American, invented America’s first clock. It was his clock invention that really propelled the reputation of Benjamin Banneker. Sometime in the early 1750s, Benjamin borrowed a pocket watch from a wealthy acquaintance, took the watch apart and studied its components. After returning the watch, he created a fully functioning clock entirely out of carved wooden pieces. The clock was amazingly precise, and would keep on ticking for decades. A Rich Heritage Gives Way to Modern Ingenuity

Look for information about African-American inventors and you'll quickly find that American innovation is rich with the contributions of famous black inventors like Elijah McCoy, Lewis Howard Latimer, George Washington Carver and Madame C.J. Walker (Sarah Breedlove).

In fact, many modern conveniences and necessities are directly related to, or derivative of, the inventions of black inventors: blood banks, the refrigerator, the electric trolley, the dust pan, comb, mop, brush, clothes dryer, re-

frigerator, lawn mower, traffic signals, the pen and the pencil sharpener.

But what of the present-day counterparts to these historical figures? Did African-Americans just up and stop inventing? The answer, conclusively, is no.

Fight for the Right to Sight

Imagine living in a world ranging from hazy, clouded vision to that of total darkness for 30 years. Before 1985, that was the plight of those with cataracts who did not want to risk surgery with a mechanical grinder. Now imagine sitting in a doctor's office without being able to see her as she explains that it may be possible to restore your vision. You can't tell by studying body language whether to trust this person or if they're pulling your leg. All you have to go by is the sound of the voice assuring you that this procedure is safe, more accurate and more comfortable than traditional cataract surgery.

As a noted Opthamologist and famous black inventor, Dr. Patricia Bath has dedicated her life to the treatment and prevention of visual impairments. Her personal belief that everyone has the "Right to Sight" led to her invention in 1985 of a specialized tool and procedure for the removal of cataracts. With the Laserphaco Probe and procedure, Dr. Bath increased the accuracy and results of cataract surgery, which had previously been performed manually with a mechanical grinder.

The difference between the old method and her new invention was the difference between the use of highly accurate laser technology and the somewhat subjective accuracy of a mechanical device. The Laserphaco Probe combined an optical laser, irrigation system and suction tubes. In use, the laser is inserted into a tiny incision on the eye; the laser then vaporizes the cataract and lens material, which is removed via the suction tubes. A replacement lens is then inserted on the eye.

With the Laserphaco Probe invention and the development of the procedure for its use, Dr. Bath helped restore the sight of several people who had been blinded by cataracts for up to 30 years.

Millard in the race for Judge, 310th Family District Court – even without the 105,158 straightticket voting cushion she received from Democratic voters in Harris County, Texas back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election.

Here’s why: Sonya Heath received 663,582 overall votes. When you subtract the 515,812 straight-ticket votes, you come up with 147,770 votes. Comparatively speaking, if you subtract the 410,654 straight-ticket votes, Judge Lisa A. Millard received from her overall vote total of 517,767 you come up with 107,113 votes. So, in essence, even if

you stripped away the straight-ticket votes received

by Judge Sonya Heath back in 2018 she would have still hypothetically unseated the incumbent by approximately 40,657 votes back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election in my opinion.

MEET DR. PHILIP EMEAGWALI THIS MOMENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY

Inventor of the World's Fastest Computer

Dr. Philip Emeagwali, who has been called the "Bill Gates of Africa," was born in Nigeria in 1954. Like many African schoolchildren, he dropped out of school at age 14 because his father could not continue paying Emeagwali's school fees.

However, his father continued teaching him at home, and everyday Emeagwali performed mental exercises such as solving 100 math problems in one hour. His father taught him until Philip "knew more than he did."

Growing up in a country torn by civil war, Emeagwali lived in a building crumbled by rocket shells. He believed his intellect was a way out of the line of fire. So he studied hard and eventually received a scholarship to Oregon State University when he was 17 where he obtained a BS in mathematics. He also earned three other degrees – a Ph.D. in Scientific computing from the University of Michigan and two Masters degrees from George Washington University.

The noted black inventor received acclaim based, at least in part, on his study of nature, specifically bees. Emeagwali saw an inherent efficiency in the way bees construct and work with honeycomb and determined computers that emulate this process could be the most efficient and powerful. In 1989, emulating the bees' honeycomb construction, Emeagwali used 65,000 processors to invent the world's fastest computer, which performs computations at 3.1 billion calculations per second.

Dr. Philip Emeagwali's resume is loaded with many other such feats, including ways of making oil fields more productive – which has resulted in the United States saving hundreds of millions of dollars each year. As one of the most famous AfricanAmerican inventors of the 20th century, Dr. Emeagwali also has won the Gordon Bell Prize – the Nobel Prize for computation. His computers are currently being used to forecast the weather and to predict the likelihood and effects of future global warming.

One of the things I love most about Judge Ronnisha Bowman is the fact that she is battle-tested. I mean, she just knows how to win. While she was the underdog in both of her 2018 contests, she (in my book) proved that she can stand on her own and duke it out with the best of them! Yes, she gained my respect back on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, in the Democratic Primary when she faced off against fellow Democrat Harold J. Landreneau. While some doubted this rising “DEMOCRATIC STAR” she showed poise, grace, faith in God, and confidence in her ability to get the job done! And after the smoke had cleared, Ronnisha Bowman had amassed 74,045 votes for 53.07 percent of the vote while Landreneau fell short with 65.491 votes for 46.93 percent of the vote. But she wasn’t done!

After taking out her fellow Democrat, Bowman turned her attention to the November 2018 midterms in what was supposed to be her toughest challenge – unseating the incumbent at the time, Republican Judge Bill Harmon. While many doubted her once again, calling her young and inexperienced, she took it all in stride and kept her eyes firmly affixed on her goal of becoming judge for Harris County Criminal Court #2. And in the end, her hard work, determination, tenacity,

and unwavering faith in God propelled her to victory. “I trust God,” she proclaimed to me on Election Night as she looked back over her life in amazement at God’s faithfulness.

In case you don’t remember, Ronnisha Bowman (as a candidate) earned 650,963 votes for 55.24 percent of the vote back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the Midterm Election, to unseat Republican Judge Bill Harmon who could only muster 527,402 votes for 44.76 percent of the vote.

So, when you hear uninformed folk say that straightticket voting is the only reason Democrats swept through Harris County, Texas back in 2018 – please share Judge Ronnisha Bowman’s inspiring story with them. After all, even if you stripped away every straight-ticket vote she received back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, she would have still hypothetically unseated the incumbent judge at the time by more than 18,403 votes in my opinion.

MEET DR. SHIRLEY ANN JACKSON THIS MOMENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY

Telecommunications Research

Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, a theoretical physicist and famous black inventor, has been credited with making many advances in science. She first developed an interest in science and mathematics during her childhood and conducted experiments and studies, such as those on the eating habits of honeybees. She followed this interest to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where she received a bachelor, and doctoral degree, all in the field of physics. In doing so she became the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D. from MIT. Jackson conducted successful experiments in theoretical physics and used her knowledge of physics to foster advances in telecommunications research while working at Bell Laboratories. Dr. Jackson conducted breakthrough basic scientific research that enabled others to invent the portable fax, touch tone telephone, solar cells, fiber optic cables, and the technology behind caller ID and call waiting.

Currently, Jackson is the president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the oldest technological research university in the United States, and recently ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation's top 50 universities. The mission of Rensselaer since its founding in 1824 has been to "apply science to the common purposes of life." Dr. Jackson's goal for Rensselaer is "to achieve prominence in the 21st century as a top-tier world-class technological research university, with global reach and global impact."

A Rich Heritage Gives Way to Modern Ingenuity

Look for information about African-American inventors and you'll quickly find that American innovation is rich with the contributions of famous black inventors like Elijah McCoy, Lewis Howard Latimer, George Washington Carver and Madame C.J. Walker (Sarah Breedlove).

In fact, many modern conveniences and necessities are directly related to, or derivative of, the inventions of black inventors: blood banks, the refrigerator, the electric trolley, the dust pan, comb, mop, brush, clothes dryer, re-

frigerator, lawn mower, traffic signals, the pen and the pencil sharpener.

But what of the present-day counterparts to these historical figures? Did African-Americans just up and stop inventing? The answer, conclusively, is no.

Inventor of the Super Soaker®

An anonymous source said of the Super Soaker®: "I got fired from a job once because of my Super Soaker. I guess that's what happens when you accidentally drench a customer when you're trying to get a coworker who ducks."

Famous black inventor and scientist Lonnie G. Johnson probably didn't have that little scenario in mind when he invented the Super Soaker squirt gun, but it is one of the countless memories that can be recalled by those who were young enough to enjoy the Super Soaker after its release in 1989.

Johnson's resume boasts work with the US Air Force and NASA (including work on the Galileo Jupiter probe and Mars Observer project), a nomination for astronaut training and more than 40 patents, but it's for a squirt gun that he's best known. Johnson conceived of a novelty water gun powered by air pressure in 1982 when he conducted an experiment at home on a heat pump that used water instead of Freon. This experimentation, which resulted in Johnson shooting a stream of water across his bathroom into the tub, led directly to the development of the Power Drencher, the precursor to the Super Soaker.

Lonnie G. Johnson now has his own company, Johnson Research and Development, and continues to do work for NASA..

Mike Knox is a native Houstonian.

He married his high school sweetheart in 1977 and they have raised one son; who now serves the city as a Houston Police Officer. Mike Knox obtained an Associate of Arts degree from the Houston Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston – Downtown while working as a Houston Police Officer.

Mike has a long history of honorable public service.

Mike Knox is a veteran who served in the United States Air Force and served over 15 years as a Houston Police Officer.

Mike was one of two officers responsible for the creation of the Houston Police Department’s first divisional gang unit in 1988 and helped create and served on the original board of directors for the Texas Gang Investigators Association.

Mike authored a book entitled Gangsta in the House; Understanding Gang Culture, which was published in 1995. This book added to the knowledge base on gang culture and was recognized in 2001 by the National Gang Research Center who awarded it the prestigious “Thrasher” award.

Mike served his fellow officers as a Board Member of the Houston Police Patrolmen’s Union and chaired the HPPU Political Action Committee. In addition, he served as editor of the “Sentinel” (HPPU) monthly newsletter.

Shortly after publishing his book in 1995, Mike began a consulting business focused on helping law enforcement, schools districts, and communities understand and deal with street gangs and violent youthful offenders.

Mike Knox has served his community as a board member of the Spring Branch Education Foundation and was among the original funders of the Spring Branch ISD “Fund for the Future” endowment. He contributed to the creation of the Spring Branch Good Neighbor program.

Mike was recruited in 2007 to help the Spring Branch Management District develop the Public Safety component of its service plan and worked as their Director of Community Service for three years.

For the past seven years Mike Knox has served as the President of the Yupon Estates Homeowners Association.

Mike has a deep interest and investment in Houston and believes Houston City Council deserves a dedicated servant.
