Moving the Missouri City Mayoral Election to November, rather than continuing to have it take place in May election cycles has posted a "BIG PROBLEM" for Mayor Allen Owen. In case you don’t know, Mayor Allen Owen was challenged by not one, but two African Americans candidates back on Tuesday,

November 6, 2018, in his bid for re-election. And at the end of election night, he found himself trailing in an election for the very first time – if my recollection is right.

And in a year that has boded well for women, on the local and national stage, Council Member Yolanda Ford has emerged as the “PROJECTED FRONTRUNNER” over your beloved Mayor Allen Owen in the upcoming Saturday, December 8, 2018 runoff election. The 8,600 votes for 35.68 percent of the vote Councilwoman Ford received places Mayor Allen Owen in a serious predicament. Especially since there was not one, but two African American candidates on the ballot.

The third-place finisher, Fred G. Taylor garnered 7,075 votes for 29.35 percent of the vote – which was a very respectable showing for him. And your beloved Mayor Allen Owen finished second behind Councilwoman Ford with 8,428 votes for 34.97 percent of the vote!

Get this; Councilman Preston garnered 10,093 votes for 47.40 percent of the vote in the race for Missouri City Council AtLarge Position #2. Susan Soto, the candidate who is asking for your vote on Saturday, December 8, 2018, finished second with 5,406 votes, for 25.39 percent of the vote. Angie Wierzbicki finished third with 3,221 votes for 15.13 percent of the vote. And H.R. “Buddy” Snyder finished fourth with 2,574 votes for 12.09 percent of the vote.

Former NFL Football player Mike Holmes has endorsed Susan Soto in the Saturday, December 8, 2018, Runoff Election for the Missouri City Council At-Large Position #2 seat. Holmes is hoping that Missouri City voters will choose Susan Soto, who is a 17-year veteran of Texas public schools, and an award-winning teacher and principle. Holmes played most of his professional career with the San Francisco 49ers as a wide receiver. He was drafted in the first round of the 1973 NFL draft with the 18th pick. He also played for the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. Holmes is also a proud graduate of Texas Southern University and Galveston Ball High School.

Congratulations to Judge Maria T. Jackson for running a solid race against Judge Sharon Keller, and William Brian Strange, III in the race for Presiding Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals. While Judge Jackson came up short in her quest to become the first Democrat to win a statewide race in Texas since the 1994 Gubernatorial election, she did accomplish a few things I would like to point out. In case you don't know, she handily beat Judge Sharon Keller in every measurable category in Harris County, Texas. ABSENTEE BALLOTS: Maria T. Jackson received 49,374 for (52.41%); Sharon Keller received 43,919 for (46.62%); and William Brian Strange, III received 922 for (0.98%). EARLY VOTES: Maria T. Jackson received 417,429 for (55.45%); Sharon Keller received 324,527 for (43.11%); and William Brian Strange, III received 10,874 for (1.44%). ELECTION DAY VOTES: Maria T. Jackson received 195,041 for (56.82%); Sharon Keller received 140,199 for (40.84%); and William Brian Strange, III received 8,036 for (2.34%). OVERALL TOTAL FOR HARRIS COUNTY: Maria T. Jackson received a total of 661,844 votes for (55.60%) of the Harris County vote. Sharon Keller received a total of 508,645 votes for (42.73%) of the vote. And William Brian Strange, III received a total of 19,832 votes for (1.67%) of the vote.

In case you don’t know, Judge-Elect DaSean Jones, he’s a decorated U.S. Army combat veteran, who wants to institute alternative sentencing initiatives that are not solely punitive, but rehabilitative in nature. And by unseating Judge Catherine Evans in the race for District Judge, 180th Judicial District Court back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, he will more than likely earn the opportunity to do just that. Although he’s a quiet and reserved professional, Judge-Elect Jones has an incredibly interesting set of life experiences that’s shaped his unique perspective. According to him, he believes that the people who make the life decisions for so many of Harris County's citizens have either lacked relevant life experience, or don’t share in the same, or similar life experiences as the men and women who they’ve been punishing. While straight-ticket voting was indeed a contributing factor in his victory over Judge Evans, he and other African American men running for county-wide offices in Harris County may find themselves facing an uphill battle in future elections. Why? Judge-Elect Jones may not have won his race without the 104,698 straight-ticket voting cushion he received from Democratic voters in Harris County, Texas back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election. Here’s why: DaSean Jones received 636,029 overall votes. When you subtract the 514,758 straight-ticket votes, you come up with 121,271 votes. Comparatively speaking, if you subtract the 410,060 straightticket votes, Judge Catherine Evans received from her overall vote total of 545,889 you

come up with 135,829 votes. Now, please keep in mind that this analysis is not meant to take away from, or diminish the victory achieved by Judge-Elect DaSean Jones, but rather to illustrate how straight-ticket voting will impact local races in upcoming elections in the 2020 Presidential Election Cycle and beyond. How can I say this, well, we stripped away the straight-ticket votes garnered by both candidates in this race, the bottom-line numbers reveal that Judge Catherine Evans would have perhaps defeated Judge-Elect DaSean Jones by an approximate margin of 14,558 votes – hypothetically speaking. Again, this formula is not an exact science, but rather a formula that can be used to measure the strength of candidacies going forward. And more directly, it shows that African American males may need a little assistance if they are to remain relevant in future Harris County, Texas elections when straight-ticket voting becomes a thing of the past.

But this race was all about Diane Trautman who received 648,647 votes, for 54.59% of the vote. Stan Stanart only received 509,299 votes, for 42.86% of the vote. And Abel Chirino Gomez received 30,288 votes, for 2.55% of the vote. So, when you subtract the 514,758 straight-ticket votes, away from Diane Trautman’s overall vote total, you come up with 133,889 votes. Comparatively speaking, if you subtract the 410,060 straight-ticket votes, Stan Stanart received from his overall vote total of 509,299 you come up with 99,239 votes. Here’s why: Sonya Heath received 662,187 overall votes. When you subtract the 514,758 straight-ticket votes, you come up with 147,429 votes. Comparatively speaking, if you subtract the 410,060 straight-ticket votes, Judge Lisa A. Millard received from her overall vote total of 517,019 you come up with 106,959 votes. So, in essence, even if you stripped away the straight-ticket votes received by Judge-Elect Sonya Heath and Judge Lisa A. Millard, she would have still defeated Judge Millard by approximately 40,470 votes back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election in my opinion.
