A Message from the Executive Director Sandi Timmins

Welcome once again, to the 23rd annual House of Ruth Maryland Spring Luncheon For almost a quarter of a century, Spring Luncheon has been the time for the community to gather as one and raise awareness of the issue of intimate partner violence It is an opportunity to be inspired by messages of courage and be re-invigorated in our commitment to our mission to end intimate partner violence A special thanks to our sponsors who make this event successful.

In 1977, a group of community leaders came together to open the doors shelter... a small city row home that became a safe haven for many Maryland has become the largest intimate partner violence and sexual a the state, providing services throughout Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Prince George’s County, and Montgomery County Not only is House of Ruth Maryland the largest service provider in Maryland, but we are among the leaders in the nation

House of Ruth Maryland is well known for the direct services we provide to clients For more than a generation we have been “the shelter in Baltimore” However, House of Ruth Maryland is so much more than that Our mission statement includes, as part of the purpose of our agency, to “confront the attitudes, behaviors, and systems, that perpetuate (intimate partner violence)” It is not enough to help people heal from the abuse We need to help people rebuild their lives, while we also need to be part of stopping it in the first place.

Intimate Partner Violence creates ripples that spread across our community. It is only by addressing the cause of the behaviors of those that abuse and providing comprehensive supportive services to those that experienced the abuse that we can begin to heal. It is through knowledge and safety that we can begin to establish stability, and it is in stability that we find the path to rebuilding and flourishing.

We are grateful to Christi Paul and Mildred Muhammad, our keynote speakers, for joining us today. Along with our Survivor Speaker, we will be hearing from three extremely brave women, who not only overcame their abuse, but also have the courage and passion to share their stories in order to help others. It is only by shining a light on this issue and standing together to say we will not tolerate abuse, that we can start to address it.

We hope you find today’s program informative and ask that you continue your unwavering support as we not only provide life-saving services to survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual assault, but also confront the attitudes, systems, and behaviors, that allow abuse to continue in our communities. A cycle of violence perpetuates through our community and it will take all of us to break this cycle and create a Maryland where every person is safe in their own home.

Sincerely,

As the ex-wife of the D.C. sniper, Mildred Muhammad, is an award-winning, internationally recognized keynote speaker, expert speaker for the US Dept. of State, CNN contributor, advocate, author, trainer and educator, traveling and speaking on a national and international platform to discuss her life of terror, abuse and heartache, all while promoting domestic violence awareness and prevention.
