For those who know the store, The Empress & Wolf exists to inspire and empower its customers with crystals, artwork and jewellery. The fiercely independent Daylesford store was created by artist Elicia Ward on the foundation of integrity with her motivation to serve the unique needs of customers. “The Empress & Wolf came to me in the form of a dream in February 2015. I dreamt of a beautiful nurturing gallery that had empowerment and healing at its core. As I am an artist it made complete sense to open up something with a bit more edge, yet keep the warmth and softness of an ambient, gentle space.” Since its opening Elicia has had two children and is now a single mum. And if that does not keep her busy enough, she also still keeps an eye on the store, does readings and can be seen on the occasional TikTok video. In her store, she has employed who she describes as “the most amazing, awesome, intelligent crew - Echo, Kira, Emma, Tessa and Ash - to support people in their journeys”.

Image: Sandy Scheltema Trentham’s Cool Country Men’s Shed is officially open after a twoyear delay thanks to Covid restrictions. President Tony Johnston said he wanted to see the shed “alive with men being together sharing skills, knowledge, life stories and companionship”. “It’s not just about wood or metal working skills, it’s about men’s health, which can be physical or mental. Some men have a sense of loneliness; it’s the isolation that can occur after retirement or the loss of a life partner. Or they might have moved to Trentham and districts and lost their close social networks, there’s also the fear of Covid-19. If we can improve men’s health, the whole community benefits.” Mr Johnston said the shed was given many donations including $6000 - Hairy Arch Art Show, $60,000 - state government, $42,500 local Bendigo Bank, $20,000 - federal government, $15,000 - Trentham Lions Club and $15,000 - Australian Lions Foundation.

Many of us have watched in horror and disbelief as Russia has rolled over Ukraine, killing soldiers and civilians, and wondered what we can do to help. Yuliya Wojcicki has the answer. Operation Cookies. Yuliya and her Aussie husband Steven run Wojcicki Constructions, a custom-home building company in Daylesford. But Yuliya was born and raised in a small town in Ukraine an hour from Kyiv. Her family moved to Australia in 1997. When the war started, Yuliya knew she needed to do something to help and decided to raise an initial amount of $7000 to help with humanitarian aid for those in need. She reached out to Caroline Goulding of Happynest Hampers in Campbells Creek who is now creating heart-shaped cookies in blue and yellow, the colours of the Ukrainian flag, with proceeds going to Spirit of Victory. The Daylesford Field & Game Club can finally return to its home at the Glenlyon Reserve after three years, now a final report has found the risk of soil contamination is “low and acceptable”. The news comes after concerns were raised over potential lead contamination and an initial assessment found elevated levels of lead and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the reserve. The Daylesford Field & Game Club, which has operated out of Glenlyon for 43 years, was told to stop using the reserve at the start of 2020. However a final report presented to Hepburn Shire Council this year has found “the extent and severity of soil contamination is less than indicated in the preliminary assessment” and no further action was needed. Club secretary Colin Johns, pictured, said club members were looking forward to their first shoot in a couple of months. Anyone interested in joining the club can contact Mr Johns on 0427 530 559.

Chillin’ tunes
There are plenty of cool places to kick back and listen to some tunes in the Central Highlands. Music at The Radio Springs Hotel in Lyonville starts on Friday nights and continues through to Sunday afternoons. There’s a mix of blues, country, covers and everything in-between.
Live music is a staple for the weekends at The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Trentham - and they have some awesome artists exhibiting. And the Palais-Hepburn has loads of great live music in a beautiful setting. Just down the road, The Guildford Family Hotel keeps the toes tapping all weekend.
For an up-to-date gig guide head to The Local at www.tlnews.com.au or check the venues’ websites.

If you missed out on last year’s Hepburn House movie-inspired calendar, don’t fret, the residents are already working on 2023 and the theme is Ageing DisGracefully! Photographer David White is working pro bono and having as much fun as the residents and staff as they all dream up ideas and images of Ageing DisGracefully. The theme is named after the Ageing DisGracefully group started after successful lobbying of the state government by Hepburn House manager Dianne Jones and the Ageing With Pride committee. The group meets every Wednesday at different cafes around the region. All enquires to ageingdis3461@gmail.com or check out the Ageing DisGracefully Facebook page. Hepburn House acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government. Above, resident Ruth Irving makes sure the drivers know who’s the boss.

Daylesford Cider Company has won Australia Award’s 2021 Regional Development Victoria Business Achievement Award. The business was bought by Jon and Clare Mackie in 2015 as a smallscale cider producer. Jon, aka Mackie, is self-taught and has refined their cider styles while also developing new innovative styles to distinguish their brand. He’s obviously doing something right because they keep winning awards at the Australian Cider Awards. Clare, who has recently become an Australian citizen, runs the on-site cellar door and restaurant with help from cellar door and events manager Andrew Rumble. Both Clare and Andrew made us feel very welcome when we popped in for lunch on a recent Friday with a couple of friends. There is plenty of seating either alfresco or indoors and lots of room to wander around an immaculately kept lawn area. Did I mention dogs are very welcome too. I tried the cider tasting paddle which was great with the woodfired pizzas - three between the four of us, ham, a veggie dreamin’ and pepperoni.

Sarah Flemming 31, and Marlie Regis 30, met in England six years ago. They left their careers to see the world and have been in Australia for four years, now influencers and bloggers, highlighting the sights and people they come across on their journey. Their recent return to Daylesford, a community that supported them during lockdown, homeless and alone, has seen them spread the joy of ChillOut with their Instagram, Facebook posts and videos - so far reaching more than 200,000 keen followers. They said one of the positives of getting stuck in Victoria was that they had more time to focus on their travel blog, Cloud Walks. Skip to 2022 and the pair was offered the chance to co-author a coffee table book about the best LGBTIQA+ events and locations around the world. “We, of course, decided to add Daylesford and the ChillOut Festival. We have spent our time here reconnecting with all of the kind people that helped us out so much back in 2020 and making new precious connections too.”

Who would guess that to some, big storms and bushfires are almost welcome? The measured pleasure they get is because these disasters may lay bare secrets tucked away in the bush, such as century old timber-getting tramways in the Wombat State Forest. Nature’s archaeologists helped uncover some of the tramways that stretched for about the same distance as the return journey from Daylesford to Ballarat. Their hiding places and burial spots are being recorded by researchers such as historian Norman Houghton, left, and local enthusiast David Endacott, right. Surprisingly, the first primitive sawmills began not long after gold was found in 1851. Sturdy horses pulled loads of logs along a spider’s web of tramlines to mills and then to market. Within four years, as the gold rush roared on, deeper and more complex mines were needed, so hewn and split timber was called for to line shafts, fire boilers, provide sleepers and more. This meant felling trees including a giant at Dean with a 11.2-metre circumference.

Most people take long service leave to get away from work. Not so Vicki Sundblom, pictured third from left at Cape York. The 60-year-old, a nurse from Little Hampton who can usually be found working at any of Springs Medical Clinic’s three campuses, was on a camping holiday up north with her husband Owen, 57. “We were on the Cape (York), up the top end and were out fishing on the beach when we ran into a couple of women. I asked them if they were catching anything and it turned out they were nurses and were part of a team doing vaccinations up the top end. They said their team had started out with about 30 nurses but with some of the graduates finding jobs, it had dwindled to about 15. We had been doing vaccinations before I left and I thought ‘I’ll have go at that’, rang the number and off I went. I started on August 16 and finished about a week before Christmas. It was pretty full on and I was pooped by the time I finished.”
