Roy heads to building sites every day with Steven Fiume, who works with his dad’s company, AC Young Builders. Steven said Roy, a seven-month-old border collie/kelpie, “takes the chore out of working” and puts a smile on everyone’s face. And like most of his breeds, Roy loves a tennis ball. Singer/songwriter, and former Smeaton resident, D’Arcy Spiller is one of the stars of Menulog’s reworked Snoop Dogg’s Did Somebody Say track. The track aired in October and features D’Arcy along with Baker Boy, Kirsten Salty and Big Twisty. Mushroom Group chief executive Matt Gudinski said the campaign was a platform for young talent. “We’re excited by the opportunity to give some of the country’s most exciting young talent a platform with the new Menulog campaign.” The Local ran a feature on D’Arcy in May 2020. D’Arcy said she first realised she had talent when she started having success in national and international song writing comps. “That’s when I thought ‘hmm, maybe I could do this, maybe I could do song writing’. It’s a series of little things.” Image: Brian Purnell of Mushroom Creative House Read the full story at www.tlnews.com.au - Edition 241

ChillOut has announced its 2022 theme – Our time to shine! Director Emma Ireland said the LGBTIQ+ event would be celebrating its 25-year Silver Jubilee in March and the theme encompassed all things ChillOut. “It’s about all the colours of the rainbow, moonbeams and disco balls – the iconic spectrum of light that comes from that one mirrored piece. And it goes with our modern climate, that we are coming out of the dark ages and it is appropriate that we all have our time to shine next March. We will hopefully all be vaccinated so we can get together and have a beautiful celebration. It is really exciting. It has been such a hard year for artists and events and communities but we are so lucky to be up here in our beautiful rainbow bubble. We are a town that exists on sharing who we are and sharing our country pride.” Read the full story at www.tlnews.com.au - Edition 235

Creswick Kids Choir leader Stella Savy
Newlyn resident, fundraiser and musician Judy Turner was coming to the end of a contract with Sovereign Hill, when an epiphany occurred – what better thing to do in retirement than to start a new festival, in beautiful Creswick? Having played at most folk festivals across Australia and New Zealand, Judy felt that bringing the music home would be something she could do for the town, for the wide community of musicians she is part of and, frankly, for herself. Judy said her husband and musical partner, songwriter Neil Adam, quickly came on board. “We had never seen the town thronging with people and as musicians we thought, what better way to bring in a crowd than to program a whole weekend of music.” Having identified local groups interested in collaborating and secured the support of Creswick Neighbourhood Centre, they agreed on the name CresFest and dates April 1-3, 2022. He is one of Australia’s favourite rockers, an ARIA Hall of Famer and together with The Black Sorrows he’s sold more than two million albums. And just recently released yet another album. But 73-year-old, Joe Camilleri, who now calls the Macedon Ranges home, has no plans to slow down. Joe’s called the area home for around three years and it was a spontaneous drive to Macedon Ranges with his former partner that changed his life and his postcode. “We decided to drive to the area as that’s where my dad used to take me as a kid and when we stopped to get a coffee in Kyneton the café owner recognised me. We got chatting and she mentioned a house that was for sale. We went around and it’s a Japanese-style box house. I’m more into art deco and art nouveau but it was the tree in the front yard that was amazing. The owner of the house was a wellknown local artist and had the house set out beautifully.” Read the full story at www.tlnews.com.au - Edition 237

Nick Carpenter’s Wildwood Instruments Art Gallery at Mount Franklin is open every weekend with a changing array of his works on display. Nick is a luthier and artist, and has created a very inviting gallery space, dedicated to the theme of music. He creates stunning 3D artworks that draw on the grit and glitz (and everything in between) of our musical culture. Nick has been involved in the music industry for over 30 years. He is an instrument maker and has been in bands playing various instruments, as well as writing, performing and recording music. He has been running Wildwood Instruments since 1999, where he has made over 1000 instruments and taught hundreds of people the art of instrument making. His work as an artist is a love affair of what he calls “Art X Music”. Read the full story at www.tlnews.com.au - Edition 238

There is a real vibe happening at Guildford. And driving around you get the feeling it’s about to boom. For example, if you head just a few hundred metres up one of the side roads you pass two old churches and a school. The primary school had closed but locals have lobbied long and hard for it to re-open. And, sure enough, parked on the street are a number of construction vehicles with plenty of tradespeople working towards it re-opening as a campus of Campbells Creek Primary School for the start of the first school term next year. Then there’s the pub. The Guilly. Outgoing publican Alan Joyce had called time after seven years but step up hospitality stalwart Megan Evans and her partner, music industry long-timer Tom Allen. The perfect pair for a hospitality and music venue. And they live seven minutes up the road at Campbells Creek. Megan’s mum is even a Guildford local! The forests of the Central Highlands are lovely in the day. A bucolic place, abounding with precious orchids, meandering butterflies and grazing kangaroos. A benign arcadia, safe, beautiful, serene. But as the sun goes down and shadows lengthen, the atmosphere turns menacing. Night soon must fall and within this penumbral darkness horrors await. Or so director Shannon Young would have you feel when sitting down to watch Stricken. Stricken, featuring Stephanie Kelly, Simon Berman, Tyler Young, Michaela Pascoe and local Tom McCathie, pictured, has been in development for several years and, after lengthy delays brought about by Covid lockdown restrictions, is finally about to move into post-production. But for the past 10 months or so Shannon and his crew have been completing photography at an out of the way location in the bush near Glenlyon. 25 News Fun! / 17 Spring 25
The shopfronts of Daylesford and surrounds came alive in November with 120 beautiful floral installations designed to celebrate spring and move towards a better future. Sprout is a collaboration of many local groups and individuals, spearheaded by the Daylesford and District Horticultural Society in association with the Friends of Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens, designed to lift the spirits of traders and shoppers alike after long Covid restrictions. Spokesperson Jill Teschendorff said the group’s members commandeered the Daylesford Town Hall on Friday, November 19, making “beautiful foliage installations for every shop that was keen to be involved”. They were delivered to shopfronts by noon that day and remained on display for the weekend. “It has been a hard time for everyone but particularly for the traders who have done it really tough, so we wanted to spread happiness and joy.” Read the full story at www.tlnews.com.au - Edition 240

A secret you might like! A few kilometres outside Daylesford are these amazing sculpture horses. Who created them? How did they get there? No-one seems to know but they are well worth a look to the left as you drive by on your way north. See if you can spot them. Or just ask a local where they are. They just might tell you, or they may prefer to keep it a secret...

Gone bush / 29
Most people heading out into the bush for a walk or a mountain bike ride don’t have all day, so the Great Dividing Trail Association has produced a guidebook, with walks and bike rides within the Daylesford region, able to be completed in four hours. President Gib Wettenhall said the association had, for many years, wanted to make Daylesford’s varied terrain more easily accessible “from the vastness of the Wombat Forest to the Central Highlands’ lakes and riversides, from its abandoned railway lines to gold rush era ruins”. “The solution is now here – a new guidebook with 20 walks and 10 bike rides - and all of the routes presented are circuits, so there’s no fiddling around with car shuttles.” The guidebook is for sale for $24.99 from www.gdt.org.au/shop or the Daylesford Regional Visitor Information Centre. Chillin’ tunes There are plenty of cool places to kick back and listen to some tunes in the Central Highlands. Music at The Radio Springs Hotel in Lyonville starts on Friday nights and continues through to Sunday afternoons. There’s a mix of blues, country, covers and everything in-between.
Live music is a staple for the weekends at The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Trentham - and they have some awesome artists exhibiting. And the Palais-Hepburn has loads of great live music in a beautiful setting. Just down the road, The Guildford Family Hotel keeps the toes tapping all weekend.
For an up-to-date gig guide head to The Local at www.tlnews.com.au or check the venues’ websites.
