OPENWIDE INTERNATIONAL LAUNCH MAJOR RE-BRAND AS ADVENTURE ATTRACTIONS

Openwide International has unveiled its exciting new brand identity and will now be known as Adventure Attractions with the tagline ‘Discover Adventure in every experience’. The new branding represents the growth and diversification of Openwide over the last 32 years.

Openwide was formed in 1992 as a company of producers and imagineers who designed innovative attractions, shows and new and original themes for events, conferences, and trade launches. As a result of numerous successes, the company has now diversified into an ever-greater range of projects across the industry and has developed its own multi award winning in-house brands and operations.

These include a 25-year lease and partnership with Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole council to develop and operate Bournemouth Pier and a longterm management contract with North Norfolk district council to operate the grade

2 listed Cromer Pier and pavilion theatre. In house attractions developed include RockReef Indoor adventure attraction, the PierZip and the Cromer Pier Variety Show.

Managing Director Sarah Hunter commented, “I believe our new brand identity of Adventure Attractions represents the growth of the company over the last 32 years, and it better reflects the services we offer and the direction that we want to take the company. Our tagline ‘Discover Adventure in every experience’ aligns with our vision of creating fun, memorable experiences for all. We believe adventure is about more than thrilling rides or sports attractions, it is about creating excitement & discovering something new, which to some people could be as simple as trying a new food or activity.”

All new business moving forward will be developed using the Adventure Attractions brand. Openwide International and Openwide Coastal are still trading companies and the re-brand to Adventure Attractions will not affect any current contracts or suppliers.

Hosted by the High Sheriff of Dorset, Colin Weston MBE JP, the event recognised the exceptional contributions of individuals and groups dedicated to improving safety and lives in Dorset communities.

The High Sheriff Awards are a symbol of distinction and acknowledgment bestowed upon those who exemplify the spirit of altruism and service. DORSET CELEBRATES AS THE LORD BUTE CLINCHES PRESTIGIOUS LUXLIFE AWARD AND PARTNERS WITH POMMERY CHAMPAGNE

In a remarkable feat for Dorset’s culinary scene, The Lord Bute, under the guidance of celebrated chef Bradley Green, has been awarded the ‘Best Luxury Restaurant in Dorset’ by the LuxLife Food & Drink Awards 2024. This notable achievement marks the first time the restaurant has received such distinction in the 14 years the award has been open, highlighting Bradley Green’s innovative culinary expertise and dedication to luxury dining.

Green’s journey from the bustling streets of London to the tranquil shores of Dorset is a story of passion and perseverance. With a career that began alongside culinary legends and saw the establishment of his successful restaurant brand, Green’s, his venture into The Lord Bute was a promise of bringing unparalleled dining experiences to Dorset. His approach, which skillfully combines local ingredients with international culinary techniques, has not only captivated diners but has now been formally recognised on a prestigious platform.

The LuxLife Food & Drink Awards, celebrated for shining a spotlight on exceptional culinary innovation, found The Lord Bute to stand out among its peers. The award reflects the restaurant’s commitment to excellence in every aspect of its operation, from ingredient selection to presentation, and of course, taste.

In addition to this remarkable accolade, The Lord Bute has entered into an exclusive partnership with the legendary Champagne house, Pommery. This collaboration has birthed ‘The Pommery Afternoon Tea, by Bradley Green,’ offering guests a refined blend of exquisite culinary offerings paired with the luxurious ‘Apanage’ range of Pommery Champagne. This partnership not only elevates the dining experience but sets The Lord Bute apart as a destination for those seeking the pinnacle of luxury dining.

THE LORD BUTE www.thelordbute.com

Giles Henton, Pommery’s UK Sales Director, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting the shared values of excellence and luxury between Pommery and The Lord Bute, “ We are tremendously excited to be working with Bradley Green“, says Henton. This sentiment underscores the significance of the partnership, promising to offer guests an even more memorable dining experience.

The Lord Bute’s recognition by the LuxLife Food & Drink Awards and its partnership with Pommery Champagne are just the beginning of what promises to be a new era of luxury dining in Dorset. Bradley Green and his team are dedicated to continuing their pursuit of culinary excellence, ensuring that each visit to The Lord Bute is not just a meal, but a memorable experience that celebrates the best of luxury, comfort, and taste. The new ten-course tasting menu is absolutely flawless in its execution and sees the chefs including Green do much food theatre at the table.

With these exciting developments, The Lord Bute stands as a testament to the vibrant culinary landscape of Dorset, inviting locals and visitors alike to indulge in a dining experience that is truly exceptional. As The Lord Bute charts its course forward, it remains a beacon of culinary innovation, luxury, and the art of fine dining.

TRETHOWANS LAUNCH ‘ONE COUPLE, ONE LAWYER’ SERVICE FOR A MORE AMICABLE WAY TO DIVORCE

Trethowans solicitors has launched a new service for divorcing couples. Adopting the ‘Resolution Together’ method, it is a one couple, one lawyer approach to divorce.

Resolution Together gives a separating couple a non-confrontational and more cost-effective way to divorce, by allowing them to instruct the same lawyer.

Partners Kimberley Davies and Grant Cameron said, “This is a relatively new option for couples facing divorce or separation. Following the Resolution Together model, our specially trained experts can offer advice to both parties. This is much more amicable and means the couple can come together to meet with a single lawyer and gain the advice they need to help them reach an agreement on any issues they may face. They divorce together.

“We will act in the interest of both parties to come up with a mutually beneficial resolution on matters such as the divorce application itself, finances, or arrangements for children. Once an overall understanding is reached, we can also draw up and submit all the legal documents for the couple so that they end up with something legally binding and enforceable.

“For those considering Resolution Together, Trethowans can help you decide if this service is right for you. If it is not, then you will know from the beginning and can look at other methods.

TRETHOWANS

“Some of the benefits to couples using Resolution Together include:

• It is much more amicable. You will be working to find a solution for your family, together, rather than each of you taking “sides”. This is particularly important when the couple have children and ongoing relationships.

• This service is more cost effective than each of you having separate lawyers. With one family lawyer only, the legal costs are likely to be less than if two lawyers were instructed.

• The service is more efficient than traditional methods such as solicitor negotiation and court proceedings. By meeting your lawyer together and receiving open advice an agreement can be reached far quicker.”

If you would like to know more about one couple one lawyer divorce, please reach out to Kimberley Davies on 01202 339028 or Kimberley.davies@trethowans.com

A Digital Afterlife?

From shopping to social media, communication to financial affairs, more and more of our lives are moving online. But what happens after we die? Will our online activities live on forever? Do we want them to? Wills, Trusts and Estate Planning expert, Kathryn Loveland-Blockley looks at the growing demand for the management of ‘Digital Assets’.

As our lives become increasingly intertwined with technology, it is important to understand what we mean by ‘Digital Assets’ and consider what will happen to them after we pass away.

You may think, “I haven’t any cryptocurrency,” (such as the infamous Bitcoin) “so Digital Assets don’t apply to me” but this term refers to the whole range of online accounts, files and data that hold personal sentimental or financial value. This includes social media including Facebook and Instagram, correspondence on email addresses, photo libraries, online banking, credit on Paypal or betting sites, and so much more.

Though a comparatively recent phenomenon, overlooking Digital Assets in Estate Planning can lead to serious complications and potential loss of valuable information or assets, so people must give careful consideration to their online activities when making their Wills and estate planning. The most crucial question is how executors, appointed to administer the wishes of the deceased, are able to gain access to Digital Assets and the information stored in them?

Some companies have set procedures in place for when someone passes away. Online shopping giant, Amazon, for example, has set up ‘Amazon Household’ in order to link more than one account so when someone dies, photos, documents, and payment details are still accessible. Social media site, Facebook has a couple of options - you can have your page deleted or set up as a memorial. Options will no doubt change as time goes on, so it is important to keep up to date, undertaking a regular review of what you have, what you use and their terms and conditions.

I am seeing growing use of ‘Digital Executors’. This can be the same as your ‘offline’ executors, or someone different, but they would be responsible for managing and distributing your Digital Assets.

If this all seems complicated or confusing, that is where professionals, who undertake regular training prove their worth as guides through what to consider and the latest measures in place to manage them.

As we all make evergrowing digital footprints, we must recognise the financial value and sentimental significance of what we create, purchase and store. By taking proactive steps to address these issues, we can ensure a smooth following of our digital lives to our ‘real life’ ones.

To discuss the future of your Digital Assets, or any issue regarding Wills, Trust and Estate Planning, Katherine can be contacted on 01202 315005 or at k.loveland-blockley@ duttongregory.co.uk

Adventure Awaits at Little Crickets Forest School!

Little Crickets Forest School is a charming Forest School nestled in the green and natural surrounds of the Cooper Dean Pavilion in central Bournemouth. Open for 51 weeks of the year, the Forest School provides daycare for children aged 3 years and above. Little Crickets is an Ofsted registered Forest School led by skilled and professional Forest School practitioners. The Forest School provides an enriching environment where children explore, learn, and grow within the beauty of the natural world.

Each day at our Forest School, children enjoy a diverse range of learning experiences that deepen their understanding of the natural world. Working within the framework of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, children explore the intricate life cycles of plants and wildlife, hone their skills in den building, safely engage with fire pits, identify bugs and their habitats, and participate in the rewarding process of

planting and harvesting vegetables. Our knowledgeable practitioners’ expertise in the curriculum ensures that these handson activities support the seven core areas of the EYFS, while at the same time ensuring that sessions are child-led. This philosophy is central to the Forest School ethos; activities are dictated by the child and follow the direction in which children choose to take them. This provides plenty of opportunities for children to develop their creativity and imagination skills, as well as social development.

Our Forest School offers extensive opportunities to learn outside where children are taught to be risk-aware and

not risk-averse. Such an approach to risk means that children constantly expand their ability to solve real-world challenges, building self-belief, and resilience.

We offer a wide range of activities designed to cater to various age groups, ensuring that each child’s interests and developmental needs are met. Come and see for yourself at one of our weekly Nature Tots drop-in sessions or follow us on social media at @littlecricketsforestschool.

Our Open Day on Tuesday 16th April gives parents the ideal opportunity to see the Forest School in action. For more information and to book your place on one of our events, visit our website at www.littlecricketsforestschool.co.uk or email us at office@littlecricketsforestschool.co.uk.

Design that stands the test of time

When Cole and Son’s announced that they were relaunching one of their most iconic designs ‘Hummingbirds’, I got this feeling of nostalgia, like meeting up with an old friend, such great memories having specified this design around 12 years ago, adorning the walls to the entrance of a romantic Wedding Venue amongst the rolling hills of Herefordshire. It became the backdrop to so many beautiful photographs.

Originally created in the 1780s as an 18-colour hand block-printed motif, taking a total of 11 blocks to print, using a method called ‘patch printing’ where the printer can print more than one colour with each impression, Hummingbirds has remained a precious jewel within the Cole & Son portfolio.

It’s been tastefully revived, the house’s new Selection of Hummingbirds also incorporates new textiles in crisp cotton poplins as well as raw silks, both plain co-ordinates and luxurious embroidered silks showcasing the dazzling hues of each bird’s plumage.

The Collection will be available to view by appointment and sample if to be considered for your project at Rock Paper Scissors Creative Interiors in Burley from mid-April.

Spring moments not to miss with the National Trust 6

From lawns littered with daffodils to orchards filled with blossom and woods carpeted in bluebells, put a spring in your step with a visit to a National Trust garden in Hampshire, or on the Isle of Wight. Here are six spring highlights to look out for:

1. Creamy canopy of scented magnolia at Mottisfont

2. Native English bluebells in Morgaston Woods at The Vyne

3. 10,000 tulips and other spring bulbs at Hinton Ampner

4. Apple blossom in Sandham Memorial Chapel’s orchard, set in a mini flower meadow

5. The cherry orchard at Mottisfont, underplanted with naturalised spring bulbs

6. Swathes of daffodils across Mottistone Gardens, Isle of Wight

MOTTISFONT, NR ROMSEY

Creamy canopy of scented magnolia at Mottisfont Gardens open 10am to 5pm

From late March, Mottisfont reveals a spectacular spring offering, when the magnolia tree by the stableyard comes into flower. It creates a broad canopy of scented white blossom, which in full bloom makes a stunning shot for springtime selfies. You can stand beneath the tree with the gardens behind you, or take a photo from one of the benches on the other side of the flint wall, with the magnolia arching behind you.

What else is there to see? Hundreds of fragrant daffodils litter the grass by the house and spread beneath Mottisfont’s famous great plane tree in a mix of cream, white and gold. The parterre is packed with blue and yellow hyacinths and tulips – a good spot to linger for a scented hit – and brightly coloured tulips pop up in the kitchen garden’s raised beds. Wander through to the rose garden for more tulip clusters.

You may also be in time to see the ground beneath Mottisfont’s elegant Jellicoe-designed lime avenue transformed into a carpet of blue by thousands of tiny blue star-shaped chionodoxa flowers.

Mottisfont’s Garden Guides lead free themed daily walks, including a Welcome Walk which provides a general introduction for first-time visitors, alongside more in-depth history and seasonal garden walks. The Welcome Team at visitor reception will be able to advise what’s on offer when you visit. Walks vary daily.

THE VYNE, NR BASINGSTOKE

Native English bluebells at The Vyne Gardens open 10am to 5pm

The beauty of this particular bluebell display (aside from the obvious) is its location - the 1.4 mile trail starts right next to The Vyne’s visitor reception point and the entrance to the garden. A broad track (suitable for allterrain buggies) takes you alongside a magnificent lake and down to the wetlands’ bird hide. Then it’s into the woods to discover carpets of delicately scented bluebells. There are shorter trail options too – look at the coloured waymarkers for details. The best time for bluebell displays is late April and early May.

What else is there to see? Pop by for cheery daffodil displays across the gardens. There are fresh bunches for sale too, at the visitor reception point. Blue, white and pink hyacinths fill the south terrace, and dark purple Queen of Night, pink Menton and pale Spring Green tulips in the walled garden provide pops of colour. In late spring, 40 apple varieties as well as medlar, plum and pear trees fill the orchard with candy-pink and white blossoms - a lovely place for a spring picnic.

10,000 tulips, narcissi and hyacinths – new displays for 2024

Gardens open 10am to 4pm

In April and May this garden, famous for its spring colour, is awash with tulips; nearly 5,000 in fact, in 12 eye-catching varieties. Displays change every year, and this spring they are particularly lush. n the sunken garden you’ll spot orange-pink Menton and zingy cream and green-striped Spring Green. Peony-looking soft pink Angelique and rich pink fluted Mariette fill

borders in the yew garden. Orange, apricot and purple colourways are on show in the kitchen garden, and there are nearly 2,000 bulbs in pots too – look out for the incredible Tulipa acuminata, with its long spidery scarlet and yellow petals.

What else is there to see? There are over 10,000 spring bulbs on show at Hinton Ampner - cream and white narcissi and blue and apricot hyacinths jostle with the tulips. Throughout spring, fruit trees and ornamental cherry trees reveal pink and cream blossom in the orchard, the kitchen garden and by the lily pond.

Garden Guides lead free daily themed walks at various times, starting at the potting shed. Ask for details when you arrive.

Hinton Ampner has some of the best native bluebell displays in Hampshire – there are some close to the start of the four mile Dutton Estate walk, and in the beech woods further on you’ll be treated to huge purple-blue swathes. The delicate flowers fringe broad woodland paths, so you can enjoy the blooms all around you. A really uplifting sight.

SANDHAM MEMORIAL CHAPEL, BURGHCLERE

wildflowers like ragged robin, snakeshead fritillary, and cowslip litter the tufty grass at the base of the hedgerows. Behind the chapel, young crab apple trees lining the footpath create a frothy white avenue.

What else is there to see? Sandham is very special to many people, and its Garden of Reflection provides a unique floral-filled haven for contemplation and relaxation. In spring, primulas, dwarf daffodils and tulips provide splashes of bright colour, contrasting with soft ornamental grasses, aquilegia, honeysuckle and lavender. Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnics.

The ornamental cherry orchard at Mottisfont, with naturalised spring bulbs Gardens open 10am to 5pm

In early April, Mottisfont’s small cherry orchard bursts into frothy white bloom. 15 closely planted Mount Fuji cherry trees release a honey fragrance, making them a favourite with visiting bees. A grassy path meanders through the middle of the orchard, drawing the eye to the meadow beyond. If you look down into the tussocky orchard grass you’ll spot splashes of colour from flowers that have naturalised there including tiny pink species tulips and lilac snakeshead fritillaries.

Daffodils displays at Mottistone Gardens, Isle of Wight Gardens open 10.30am to 5pm

These unique gardens, in a sheltered valley setting, are a magical place to experience spring delights. The garden team have planted over 11,000 daffodil bulbs, for rich displays of pure white ‘Ice Follies’ and bright yellow ‘Unsurpassable’ beneath the fruit tree avenue and Mottistone’s grand old horse chestnut trees.

You can soak up displays of fragrant creamy doubleflowering variety ‘Cheerfulness’ in the tea garden, and yellow and orange ‘Scarlett O’Hara’ in the shady gully. If you wander to the top of the orchard you’ll find a bench to relax on amongst the flowers.

What else is there to see? The mild island climate produces beautiful displays of camelia and magnolia at Mottistone. The avenue of fruit trees fills the orchard with a soft mix of apple, cherry and quince blossom. By late April a mass of bluebells covers the wooded banks at the top of the garden, and the paths beyond leading up to the famous Longstone. In the pictorial meadow, cowslips flower, whilst the borders fill with colour from frittilaria, aquilegeas and perennial wallflowers. Rhododendrons and azaleas flower earlier than on the mainland. By the end of April bright pink and white varieties are blooming profusely in the shady gulley running along the edge of the gardens.

Why going slow is rapidly becoming the way to travel

Take a holiday where the journey is the destination, with these easy-going trips, says Sarah Marshall.

With access to the world now easier than ever, it’s hard to resist the temptation to cram holiday itineraries with multi-day hops. But on the flip-side, slow travel is growing in popularity.

This doesn’t necessarily mean taking an age to reach a destination – although journeys are rapidly becoming part of the adventure. Instead, the emphasis is on being immersed in every moment, whether that’s savouring street food in an Indian market, or hiking through mountains in Spain.

The end result is a holiday that’s often better for the environment and more relaxing for your soul. Here are some of our top slow travel picks right now…

Enjoy the simple life in India

The stereotypical image of India conjures up colourful chaos, but the best way to soak it all in is slowly. Surrounded by lemon groves, frangipani trees and marigolds at the foothills of the Aravalli Mountains, Anopura is a peaceful farm featuring a collection of four villas and seven suites.

An hour’s drive northeast of Jaipur, the journey to get here passes through ancient temples, dramatic cliffs and patches of jungle.

Alongside leopard safaris, immersive experiences include block painting classes with local women, picnics in temple ruins at dusk, and cricket games with the nearby village.

HOW: One bedroom farm villas (sleeps two) start from £170 per night on a B&B basis. Visit anopura.com

Sail away to Spain

In an era of slow travel, ferries have been enjoying a renaissance. Brittany Ferries, who operate trips from Portsmouth and Plymouth to Santander and Bilbao, have joined forces with the Paradores to offer relaxing holidays with stays in historic hotels and immersion in Spain’s cultural heritage.

Parador de Fuente Dé, for example, is a modern mountain shelter in Cantabria’s Picos de Europa mountain range with access to trails and a cable car. Take part in photography workshops, learn the basics of beekeeping and indulge in forest bathing.

HOW: Five-night trips from £280pp for a car and two people, including return ferry crossings and three nights’ B&B in a Parador. Visit brittany-ferries.co.uk

Cross the Arctic Circle by train

There aren’t many places in the world where train journeys risk being interrupted by a reindeer on the line. Travelling along the inland spine of Sweden, a five-night trip on the historic Inlandsbanan train offers travellers the chance to see Santa’s helpers along with bears, wolves, lynx and wolverine on a journey into the wilderness.

Start above the Arctic Circle in Gällivare – reached with a flight or overnight train via Stockholm – and stop at Jokkmokk to visit the Sami museum and learn about indigenous culture. Between June 5 and July 6, this region experiences the phenomenon of Midnight Sun with daylight around the clock.

The trip ends in Mora in the Dalarna region, a folkloric area cherished by nostalgic Swedes and famous for its red wooden horses.

HOW: A six-day North to South trip costs from SEK 9,295/£705pp including five nights’ accommodation in mid-range hotels and museum entries. Flights extra. Visit res.inlandsbanan.se/en

Take it easy in the Dolomites

It can seem daunting in a foreign country, but using public transport is both an economical and more sustainable way to travel – plus it plunges you into local life. Inntravel has made the process easy with their new ‘stroll’ portfolio of trips, using local buses, trains and lifts to make walking more accessible.

Their seven-night adventure to Italy’s Dolomites includes days on the Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest Alpine plateau, a climb to the UNESCO Dolomites Panoramic Balcony and a low level route along the path of the historic Ferata de Gherdëina, a former railway line built by Russian POWs during WWI. Sleep and eat in family-owned restaurants and hotels.

HOW: From £1,070pp (two sharing), including halfboard accommodation, luggage transfers, and route notes and maps. Available from May 25 to October 31. Visit inntravel.co.uk

Thinking about a cruise for your next holiday?

Are you feeling swamped by oices?

No worries, I’m here to help you figure out the perfect cruise without the headache. Whether it’s deciding between river or ocean cruises, picking the right ship size, choosing your cabin, or figuring out which places to explore, I’ve got some tips for you.

Choosing Your Destination

First up, where do you want to go? If you’re in the UK, loads of cruises start here, so you don’t need to fly anywhere to hop on your ship. You can sail o to places like Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, or even the Canary Islands. Fancy going further, like Australia or New Zealand? You might need to catch a flight first or pick a longer cruise that takes you around the world.

Think About the Weather

The weather’s a big deal. For instance, you might want to skip parts of the Caribbean during hurricane season unless you’re into that sort of adventure. Some cruises adjust their routes based on the weather, so you’re not stuck in a storm.

Big Ship or Small Ship?

Cruises aren’t one-size-fits-all. Big ships have loads of activities and are great for families. Smaller ships are cosier, can get into tinier ports for unique stops, and you won’t be queuing as much.

What’s Your Cruise Style?

Do you want to spend most of your time exploring di erent places, or are you looking to chill on the ship? River cruises or itineraries with lots of stops are great for explorers. If you prefer to relax and enjoy the ship’s facilities, look for cruises with more days at sea.

Picking Your Cabin

Cabins range from simple inside rooms to fancy suites with amazing views. Most folks go for something in the middle, like a room with a view or a balcony. Got a bit more to spend? A suite gives you more room and luxury. If you get seasick, a cabin in the middle of the ship is usually more stable.

Excursions and Adventures

Cruises o er all sorts of tours and activities at each stop, but these usually cost extra. Some cruise lines include these in your fare or o er deals like free tours up to a certain number of days.

Making It Easy

Choosing the right cruise can seem overwhelming, but once you find what you like, you’ll probably be hooked. That’s where our new website comes in handy. We’ve got

www.damonrobbins.notjusttravel.com

a massive selection of cruises, from ocean to river and everything in between. You can check out detailed plans, learn about di erent ships, and find the best options for your budget and style.

Immerse yourself in a world of cruises, from the tranquil rivers to the majestic oceans and everything in between. A house full of light and offering outstanding views

Wow what a view! All rooms at Fern Hollow are bathed in light with large windows overlooking the extensive gardens at both front and back elevation. Sunrise and sunsets can be enjoyed without leaving the house! Sit on the balcony and enjoy the sunshine or watch the stars after dark.

The current owner wanted to embrace the beautiful secluded outdoor space, so French Doors were installed to the garden from the office, kitchen/snug and master bedroom; there is also a door leading from the top landing directly onto the south facing glass modern balustraded balcony. The picture windows and multi-aspected rooms ensure that the effect is a light and bright home.

Decorated using Farrow & Ball paint and light coloured newly installed high wool mix carpets has given this house a contemporary twist but still embracing traditional comforts. The sitting room’s focal point has to be the view out of the windows, but for those dark nights when the sun has set, a bath stone bespoke fireplace surrounds a local built Ekol Adept Concept multi-fuel log burner with air-wash system that provides clean glass viewing.

Entertaining and family dining takes place in a German built kitchen with Fisher & Paykel dishdrawer, oven and hob. The main kitchen has a large central island and there are wrap round extensive cupboards. The garden view can be enjoyed when preparing food or whilst simply loitering against the buffet area or resting on the bar chairs.

The snug created at the opposite end of the room has direct access by French Doors out onto the patio, a perfect spot for a barbecue with friends. A formal dining room has been retained and this adjoins the kitchen, although this could very easily be opened into a large L-shaped family room with minimal building works if preferred by the new owners.

This property nestles on a secluded spot on a country lane, although minutes from the A350 with easy access to main trunk roads to Southampton, London and the Jurassic Coast in the opposite westerly direction. Direct rail links from Poole are close by. For those wanting to enjoy coffee culture and dining out the town of Wimborne Minster is three miles distant from this gem of a location.

Fern Hollow definitely should be viewed in person!

Come From Away

The remarkable true story of a small town that welcomed the world.

When the airspace over North America was closed on 9/11 and planes were grounded, the town of Gander in Newfoundland suddenly found itself playing host to more than 6,500 passengers and crew.

With all airborne planes forced to land at the nearest airport and inbound flights from Europe diverted to Canada, a total of 38 planes carrying 6,579 people and 19 animals touched down in Gander, almost doubling its 10,000-strong population.

On the northeastern tip of a province nicknamed The Rock by locals, these ‘come from aways’ (as the locals call people not born there) were welcomed with open arms. They were fed, clothed, housed and entertained - most notably at a ‘screech-in’ ceremony where kissing a cod earns you the title of honorary Newfoundlander - in and around Gander before aircraft were again allowed to fly.

This remarkable true story forms the basis for Come From Away, an equally remarkable musical by Irene Sankoff and David Hein that celebrates the human spirit and shows how people are at their best when faced with the worst. With laughter, tears and soaring music, it’s about hope and unity as the spirited locals and global passengers overcome reticence and cultural differences to forge a common bond and lifelong friendships.

Heading out on its first-ever UK and Ireland tour after notching up more than 1,000 performances in the West End, this most heartwarming of shows was hailed as a “big bearhug of a musical” by The New York Times when it opened on Broadway in 2017 and praised for its “charm, energy and a real generosity of spirit” when it took up residency at London’s Phoenix Theatre two years later.

WHAT’S ON | COME FROM AWAY
APRIL 24 68

In its North American homeland the show has won numerous awards. It was named Best Musical at the Drama Desk Awards, Christopher Ashley won the Tony for Best Direction of a Musical and the Outer Critics’ Circle awarded it Outstanding New Broadway Musical, to name just a few of the many accolades bestowed on it. Over here it received the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Best Musical and netted four What’s On Stage Awards including Best New Musical, along with four Olivier Awards, again including Best New Musical.

Sankoff and Hein were also honoured at the 2019 Oliviers for their musical score, eight years after they first hit on the idea of fashioning a feel-good show about events that unfolded in Gander in September 2001.

Ontario-born Irene and Canadian David were in New York on 9/11, staying in a residence for international graduate students from all around the world. “Those people took care of us, we had neighbours come over and help us,” David recalls, “we all shared music and got through it together. So when we first heard this story years later, when a friend mentioned it, we looked into it and we realised ‘This actually feels like our experience’.”

On the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks, the writing partners and husband and wife couple travelled to Newfoundland to interview the townsfolk as well as the come from aways who had journeyed back there to mark the occasion.

They found the locals to be just as welcoming as they are in the show. “They would invite us into their house,” David smiles, “and say ‘Don’t be spending money on a hotel, just come stay with us’. They’d give us the keys to their house and then they’d leave and they’d say ‘Just feed the cats’. We came back with lifelong friends and a million stories to tell.”

Those stories, collected across hours of interviews, were whittled down into a 100-minute musical, with Irene saying: “It’s so important to be sharing the story of people who reacted to something horrible in a positive light. We spend so much time focussing on the negative and I think it’s important to show the other side - people responding with kindness and people responding as a community.”

Come From Away was workshopped in Oakville in 2012 and enjoyed ecstatically received runs in San Diego, Seattle, Washington and Toronto before arriving on Broadway five years later. Audiences were drawn in by its roster of real-life characters, including Gander town mayor Claude Elliot.

Elliot himself recalls: “On the first day we had 7,000 strangers. On the third day we had 7,000 friends. And on the fifth day 7,000 family members.” Among those strangers turned friends and family members, as featured in the show, were an eager local news reporter, the mother of a New York firefighter desperate for the news of her son, and the first American Airlines captain Beverley Bass.

Being interviewed by Sankoff and Hein across four hours back in 2011 brought back so many memories for the aviation trailblazer. When she and her passengers deplaned, there were tables and tables of food waiting for them in the terminal.

“The people of Gander, I guess, had cooked all night long,” Bass recounts. “I mean, there was food for everybody. I knew immediately that the people were the nicest people I have ever been around in my life. It didn’t matter what you needed or what you wanted, it was there.”

In 2015 she got a call from the producers inviting her to see the show in San Diego. “I went to it sight unseen and I had no idea that my role was so prominent and I certainly didn’t know that a song had been written called Me and the Sky, which basically chronicles my aviation life. It was astounding. By the end of it, my head was buried in my hands because I was just sobbing.

“I’m honoured that my story is impacting young girls to this day. Sharing my story with audiences has been lifechanging and I’m so grateful to be a part of this show’s

journey. The musical is so true, it is so real. What a gift it has been to the world. The show gets a standing ovation every time because people like how something so beautiful managed to come out from such a tragedy.”

Complete strangers Nick Marson and Diane Kirschke were on the same flight from Gatwick bound for Texas, where British oil executive Nick had business to attend to while American Diane, a buyer for a department store, was on her way home after visiting her UK-based son.

They were both divorced and not seeking romance, but across their five-day stay where they were invited to get-togethers and singalongs they fell for each other. When their plane finally took off again they were, Diane smiles, smitten. “There’s a scene in the show where the stewardess is bringing towels for everyone and she goes ‘Hot towels? Hot towels?’ all the way down the plane. When she gets to us she says ‘Cold towels?’ That’s exactly as it happened.”

The couple kept in touch through emails and phone calls before Nick proposed on the phone two months later. He moved to the US soon afterwards, they got married

WHAT’S ON | COME FROM AWAY

in 2002 and had their honeymoon in Newfoundland, with Marson saying of the time they originally spent there: “I think it’s made me a better person. I try to be my best self every day, be happy, make other people happy and make them laugh.”

Also featured in the show is Bonnie Harris, who worked in Gander’s animal shelter. She took it upon herself to look after dogs, cats, chimpanzees and assorted other animals that were on board the grounded planes, humbly saying of the townsfolk’s kindness: “We didn’t do this for a thank you. We did it because it needed to be done.”

The thousands of recipients of that kindness included Kevin Jung and Kevin Tuerff, a gay couple who worked together at the latter’s environmental PR agency in Austin and who worried how they’d be received in a religious rural community like Gander. “But they treated us wonderfully,” Tuerff says. “It was a powerful moment for me. We both grew up in middle-class households and I had never had to rely on a stranger to give me a pillow to lay my head.”

A hit around the world, Come From Away has enjoyed record-breaking sold-out engagements in the West End, on Broadway, in Canada and Australia, and on a 60-city

North American tour. As it prepares to travel around the UK and Ireland, Beverley Bass marvels: “If you had told me when we left Gander on the morning of September 15th that someday I would be watching our stories play out across the world in a musical I would have been in total disbelief. I remember wanting the world to know about the folks in Gander and what they did for us, and Come From Away has made that happen.”

David Hein feels the show spreads a vital message. “There’s something important in having faith that we have more in common with people and having that faith overcome the fear,” he says. “Right now it feels important to tell stories about overcoming differences and coming together as an international community. It’s wonderful to take a story that has inspired you and share it with the world and see it inspire other people.”

Nick Marson agrees. “While 9/11 was about the worst of humanity, what happened in Gander over those five days was about the best of humanity. Those people opened their town and their hearts to us. It’s a story of human kindness.’

CARE FROM THE HEART IN WIMBORNE

At Magna Care Centre, we are dedicated to helping people to live fulfilling lives and maintain their independence, with the freedom to spend each day as they choose. Surrounding our residents with familiarity, we support them to enjoy the company of friends and family, activities, days out and good food.

Magna is situated in over five acres of beautiful landscaped grounds, and offers residential and nursing care in an atmosphere that feels like a home from home.

The people that live at Magna receive compassionate and personalised care to meet their medical and daily living needs. Our highly skilled carers take the time to get to know all of our residents, learning their personal history, preferences, routines, hobbies and interests. Knowing their stories is as important to us as it is to them; helping us shape each person’s care plan and allowing them to enjoy the experience of living at Magna.

Our team all work to ensure that the time residents spend here is as rewarding for them as it is for us, and ‘everyday’ can stay just how they like it. We offer a variety of activities, events, entertainment and trips and we encourage everyone to maintain links with outside interests, too.

Our intention, always, is to ensure our residents are at the heart of everything we do, this extends to our hospitality offering. We don’t just serve meals; we create experiences that bring joy to every bite and mealtimes here are more than a routine; they are vibrant social occasions.

Easter adventures

With the National Trust in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight

There are National Trust Easter adventures at Mottisfont, Hinton Ampner and The Vyne in Hampshire, and at Mottistone Gardens on the Isle of Wight. Dates vary, all running until 14 April. Jam-packed with outdoor activities, games, riddles and crafts, every single Easter celebration is different.

Each National Trust Easter trail comes with a pair of bunny ears and a map to help families find ten activity stations, set in some of Hampshire’s most beautiful gardens filled with spring bulbs and blossom. Some showcase cheery signs of spring such as bunnies, and animals awakening from winter hibernation, others venture off into the world of traditional village fetes and family sports.

Every trail ends with a chocolate egg, or a vegan ‘FreeFrom’ chocolate egg, made here in the UK using cocoa from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.

National Trust Easter egg trails cost £3 per child, plus normal National Trust admission/free entry for National Trust members.

HAMPSHIRE

MOTTISFONT, NR ROMSEY

• Village fete-themed Easter adventure trail, 23 March – 14 April, 10am to 5pm

• Wild play area

• Make-and-take craft activity

• Spring ‘selfie station’

With all the feel of a classic village fete, Mottisfont’s Easter egg hunt is packed with traditional and energetic springtime activities. Look out for bunny bowling, welly wanging, hoopla and other outdoor games. The trail weaves through the walled kitchen garden, across grassy paddocks and by a sparkling chalk stream where bridges provide the perfect spot for a game of Pooh Sticks. There’s plenty of space and seating for spring picnics, plus delicious ice cream varieties from local makers Jude’s.

Signs of spring: huge lawns and majestic plane trees frame this welcoming 18th century house. The lawns are littered with daffodils, the little orchard is filled with scented white cherry blossom, and jewel-coloured tulips pop from the borders.

Normal admission plus £3 per trail, includes a chocolate egg, or a vegan ‘Free-From’ chocolate egg, both made using cocoa from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.

HINTON AMPNER, NR ALRESFORD

• Easter bunny-themed adventure trail, 29 March – 14 April, 10am – 4pm

Extensive parkland to run and roam in

The gardens at Hinton Ampner, with their quirky topiary, hidden path network and panoramic views of the South Downs, are the beautiful backdrop to this year’s funfilled Easter trail.

The Easter Bunny has left lots of challenges behind on his recent visit – tackle a bunny ring toss competition in the walled garden, race like a rabbit along the old driveway and leap like a hare on the woodland loop. Put on your bunny ears and follow the twisty-turny route, taking in the tropical-themed dell, criss-crossing through the kitchen garden and navigating the lily pond on the way.

Signs of spring: these gardens are famous for their spring colour. Discover thousands of blooms, from frothy magnolia and early fruit blossom, to daffodils, tulips and more.

Normal admission plus £3 per trail, includes a chocolate egg, or a vegan ‘Free-From’ chocolate egg, both made using cocoa from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.

Try spring animals charades, mini wheelbarrow racing, egg throwing target practice, and solve an Easter egg puzzle.

Signs of spring: The Vyne was once a great Tudor powerhouse regularly visited by King Henry VIII, and today its spacious grounds are perfect for family adventures. Look out for carpets of daffodils on the South Drive, and pink and white blossom in the fruit orchard.

Normal admission plus £3 per trail, includes a chocolate egg, or a vegan ‘Free-From’ chocolate egg, both made using cocoa from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. 10am to 4pm

ISLE OF WIGHT

MOTTISTONE GARDENS, ISLE OF WIGHT

• Red Squirrel’s Easter adventure trail, 25 March–14 April Wild Play area

With its network of paths, hidden nooks, different levels, and at the top - sea views – Mottistone Gardens is the perfect spot for an Easter adventure. Red Squirrel’s hibernating friends have been sleeping soundly all winter, but now the signs of spring are starting to appear across the garden. Help Red to find and collect all the Signs of Spring stamps, from ringing bluebells to buzzards dancing in the sky. Complete ten fun activities, from jumping like a frog on tree rings to building a nest in the willow maze, so that Red and her friends can celebrate spring with a silent disco under the weeping lime tree.

Signs of spring: in spring, the gently ascending lawns of this sheltered valley garden are littered with scented narcissi, and the avenue of fruit trees creates a canopy of pink and white blossom.

Normal admission plus £3 per trail, includes a chocolate egg, or a vegan ‘Free-From’ chocolate egg, both made using cocoa from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.

Ideal Home Show; Upcoming trends, ideas and inspiration

Decorating your home can also increase its value, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

The old adage of home is where the heart is really resonates this time of year, with springtime inspiring us to style out our space.

From spring cleaning to a fresh lick of paint, chances are you’re in a mindset of how to make your home that much more inviting and most importantly, the best it can be depending on your budget.

Naturally, you have some favourite finds, from soft furnishings to hand-me-down-decor, but there’s always room for more – and that nagging question at the back of your mind, what’s trending now and should this be influencing your choices?

INTERIORS | IDEAL HOME SHOW

“I love clothes and think like my style, when it comes to interiors I’m trying to follow trends less, preferring to choose items that I know I’m more likely to love and keep forever – as you’ll see when I’m on stage at the Ideal Home Show,” says Scarlette Douglas, sibling to Stuart Douglas, TV presenters and property experts (@scarandstu).

“I think your home can, and should, showcase your personality and outlook, so I always advise people to think about what they really like,” says Douglas.

“And how a design feature, piece of furniture or art reflects them and go with these choices, which are likely to be more timeless and liked for longer…. because they’re not just trend-led.”

But while Douglas chooses to focus on what she likes, she’s aware trends do have an influence…

Mob wife aesthetic

“See cottage-core, through to Barbie-core, so I’d say to keep an eye out for the ‘mob wife aesthetic’ maximalism,” notes Douglas. “Statement pieces, inspired by the opulence of Eighties gangster’s wives. Ostentatious and in your face, nothing minimal about this trend!”

She says bold prints feed into this look and feel, especially leopard. “Often perceived as a neutral in fashion – soft furnishings like cushions and curtains are a great way into this new mood.”

Earthy palette

A return to nature is also emerging, says Douglas. “In colour we’re seeing lots of autumnal earthy tones, brown, orange, amber and crimson are prevalent.”

IDEAL HOME SHOW | INTERIORS
HOUSE-MAG.CO.UK 89

Moody hues

“Dark and atmospheric entire rooms are not as scary as once regarded,” suggests Douglas. “People are becoming more confident in creating a space they love, that reflects their own personality and style… rather than being entirely influenced by influencers.”

Silent tech

Calm and tranquil spaces provide a haven for many, in what are unquestionably hectic and heavy times, highlights Douglas. “Advances in technology enable us to do more, much quicker than ever before, so whilst tech’s influence and importance will not decrease, I think we are entering into an era of covert technology.”

“Tech that is smart but quiet and inconspicuous; doesn’t dominate or distract and ultimately enables us to keep clean, inaudible spaces that don’t negatively impact the serenity we seek from the noise of the world outside our homes.”

Maximising your investment

Beyond key decorative pieces, attention-grabbing extravagance (mob wife trend is the opposite of minimal, barely there) and incorporating other elements into your scheme for a seasonal refresh, Douglas says the duo are often asked how to increase the value of your home…

“It’s no secret, but there are some simple and costeffective ways of doing so,” advises Douglas.

“Kerb appeal is vital as most buyers will make their minds up on whether a property is for them or not within the initial 30 seconds of first seeing it, so first impressions are everything,” says Douglas.

“A well-considered front door, potted trees, planters with colourful flowers and well maintained lawn all help. Make the front of your house as attractive and desirable as possible to ensure people want to walk through the door to see inside,” she stresses.

INTERIORS | IDEAL HOME SHOW
APRIL 24 90

A fresh coat of paint on your walls along with a complete decluttering and a good clean can make your home more appealing, suggests Douglas, giving you the opportunity to receive a higher offer if you decide to sell.

“Space is important in any home, so I would recommend using your current floor plan to think of ways to create more usable areas.”

“For example, if you have a garage it could become a home office for more functional use, freeing up space inside the house.

“If you have a garden with sufficient area, consider building a garden room or summer house as an additional living area.” She continues. “Whilst this might be an expensive option, it will increase the resale value of your home, so should be seen as investing in your property to reap the financial benefits upon its sale.”

Scarlette and Stuart Douglas will be appearing at the Ideal Home Show, on hand to offer lots of top tips, live Q&As and demonstrations throughout the 17-day event, held at Olympia, London running until April 7.

Forget parsley and mint, try growing bergamot, lemon grass and sweet cicely to perk up your dishes.

Want to add some herbs to dishes that aren’t so runof-the-mill?

There are so many easy-to-grow herbs which are overlooked, says award-winning herb expert, designer and author Jekka McVicar, who runs Jekka’s Herb Farm in South Gloucestershire and is a 14-times RHS Chelsea Gold Medal winner for her organic, peat-free herb exhibits.

Many of these are detailed in her latest book, 100 Herbs To Grow, a comprehensive guide to the best herbs. Here, she suggests five herbs which gardeners who want to be slightly more adventurous might grow.

HYSSOP

“This is an absolute must-have. Apart from the fact that it’s stunningly beautiful when in flower and the bees adore it, it’s a member of the Lamiaceae family (which includes mint, sage, thyme, oregano, basil, rosemary and lavender),” she enthuses.

The flowers of this hardy perennial are generally blue and purple, but there is also a pink variety and a white one too. Flowers are edible and have a slightly minty flavour, or you can make a tea with the leaves, with a generous teaspoon of honey.

“The leaf makes a fantastic salad dressing and will grow in exactly the same place as your sage and thyme. It goes really well with tomatoes in a pasta sauce. It just adds a slightly different flavour to a dish.”

TOP TIP: Grow it in a sunny position in a well-drained, neutral-to-alkaline soil. You may need to add grit to the soil as hyssop will die if waterlogged. It’s a great companion plant for cabbages as it lures away the cabbage white butterfly.

MYRTLE

McVicar uses the aromatic dark leaves of this fragrant evergreen shrub in her cooking as you would use bay, adding them to stews, soups and sauces, before removing and discarding them.

“The white flowers are stunning. It’s the herb of love, Aphrodite’s herb. They are followed by black berries, which you can make myrtle gin from, as we would make sloe gin,” she says.

TOP TIP: Plant it in full sun in a well-drained soil. Too much wet will kill it, as will cold winds, so plant it against a south or west-facing wall and don’t overfeed it or it won’t flower. Protect it from frost and wet weather in winter, making sure that your container is lifted on to bricks if it’s in a pot.

MONARDA FISTULOSA (WILD BERGAMOT)

Monarda fistulosa has a mauve leaf and the flowers look like a lady’s fancy summer wedding hat, McVicar reckons.

“I use the petals of that flower in salads. It’s glorious. They have a warm, minty, spicy flavour, again they are part of the Lamiaceae family.”

Native to North America, this perennial plant has spreading rhizome roots which grow to 1m (3ft) tall and the leaves can be used to make a spicy tea.

“It’s very easy to grow in a well-drained soil and although they are sightly rhizomatous they are not invasive,” she says. “They are glorious in flower and you could easily grow it as an ornamental. It’s known as bee balm because it’s good for bees and other pollinators. You also get the seedheads which finches adore in the autumn.”

TOP TIP: Grow it in well-drained soil in a sunny spot and dig up plants over three years old, removing the dead centre and replanting in a prepared site.

LEMON GRASS (CYMBOPOGON CITRATUS)

“In the UK you can only buy the stem but if you go abroad, everyone uses the leaf,” she says. “It’s a proper grass, like the goose grass that you used to whistle through as a child.”

You can grow it from seed, sowing indoors in spring in prepared seed trays or modules on a frost-free windowsill.

Often used to add fragrance to Thai curries and other South East Asian dishes, keep it in indoors in the winter and put outside in the summer when the night temperature doesn’t fall below 8C. Pick the leaves when they are young.

“You can make tea with the leaf. You just chop it into small pieces and add boiled – not boiling – water and it is so refreshing. Or you can have it cold in summer, and make ice cubes with the tea, which go really well in a gin and tonic.”

TOP TIP: Use it as a container plant, McVicar suggests, using a loam-based compost, and don’t let it dry out in summer. In the autumn bring it indoors into a frost-free environment.

SWEET CICELY (MYRRHIS ODORATA)

This native herbaceous perennial which resembles cow parsley is our natural sugar herb, McVicar explains.

The leaves start pushing through now, at the same time as rhubarb is ready, she says.

“Add those leaves to the rhubarb, when you’re cooking it, and you can cut down your sugar by about three quarters. When you crush the leaf, it has a sweet aniseed flavour.”

The leaves can be chopped and used in salads, or added to soups and stews, while the roots can be cooked as a vegetable and served with butter, or eaten raw, grated and used in French dressing.

100 Herbs To Grow by Jekka McVicar is published on March 7 by Hardie Grant, priced £30.

MOTORING NEWS

Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.

RENAULT SYMBIOZ: A NEW COMPACT FAMILY SUV

Renault has announced the name of its new compact family SUV: Symbioz.

Symbioz borrows from the French word ‘symbiose’, derived from the ancient Greek ‘symbiosis’, meaning ‘living together’.

It is a word that is similar in many languages: ‘symbiosis’ in English, ‘simbiose’ in Spanish and ‘simbiosi’ in Italian, making the name Symbioz easy to understand for a wide audience.

Sylvia Dos Santos, Head of Naming Strategy, Renault Marketing Division, said: “For this new compact family car, we wanted a name

with human significance, expressing the close bond between a family and their car.”

Symbioz features the new brand design and is the most compact hybrid in Renault’s C-segment range, measuring 4.41m long. The new SUV’s interior is designed to provide all that a family requires, offering generous amounts of space and loading capacity.

It complements its practicality with the best technology that Renault has to offer. This includes the new-generation Solarbay panoramic glass roof, which turns opaque at the flick of a switch, and the E-Tech full hybrid

145hp engine. With the Symbioz weighing under 1,500kg, the use of this advanced drivetrain ensures increased driving enjoyment and lower fuel consumption.

Pure electric models within this popular sector are the technology-laden, awardwinning Megane E-Tech 100% electric and the new Scenic E-Tech 100% electric. Symbioz will join Renault’s existing hybrid C-segment offerings, which include the recently-launched premium Austral E-Tech full hybrid and the Arkana E-Tech full hybrid that blends distinctive SUV design with the style of a coupé.

ROAD TEST: MAZDA 2 - WELL WORTH ADDING TO YOUR SMALL CAR PICK LIST

If you think of small cars then not unnaturally cars like Ford’s Fiesta, Vauxhall’s Corsa and Renault’s Clio, plus others, spring to mind. One car that arguably gets overlooked is Mazda’s 2. It offers everything you would want from a small car but with the added bonus of Mazda’s reputation for quality. Other Japanese car makers such as Honda all make small cars but Mazda’s 2 is perhaps a more complete proposition. There’s a more obvious styling link to the larger models in Mazda’s line up.

The range offers four trim levels, petrol and hybrid powertrains with one engine option, a 1.5-litre petrol allied to either manual or automatic gears. There are three power outputs 75PS, 90PS and 115PS. Standard fare across the line-up includes climate, cruise control, powered and heated folding door mirrors, navigation, Car Play and Android Auto, auto lights and wipers, LED headlights, rear parking sensors, auto dimming mirror, engine stop/start push button and tyre pressure monitoring system.

Prices start from £18,615 and my test model, the top-of-the-range Homura Aka at £21,365, added such items as black roof film, half-leather upholstery, privacy glass, smart entry and start, reversing camera and heated steering wheel.

I find the build quality on all Mazda’s is superb and the cars, even at this entry level to their line-up, feels premium. The instrumentation displays, both in front of the driver and the central screen, are easy to assimilate when on the move and thankfully the Mazda2 eschews the trend for mass digitalisation in favour of dials and buttons. Hurrah! These are so much easier, and safer in my view, to operate with little need to take your eyes off the road.

I found that over the hilly terrain here in the Derbyshire Peak District the 90PS unit needed copious use of the delightfully positive and slick 6-speed manual gearbox. The ride quality is good and once on the move it can be quite good fun along twisty roads if you keep the revs high and gears slightly lower.

As mentioned earlier the Mazda2 seems to fall under the radar, which given its many virtues is a shame. It offers something a little different to the standard small car choices and in terms of equipment a very good array of standard features. It’s a car that’s as capable on longer runs as it is for a city runabout and well worth adding to your small car pick list.

ROAD TEST: DOES THE NEW DACIA SPRING RE-WRITE THE EV RULEBOOK?

The All-New Dacia Spring will have a launching price from just £14,995 on-theroad, making it the UK’s most affordable new electric car by a margin of thousands of pounds.

Available to pre-order now by placing a £99 deposit via Dacia’s website, the All-New Dacia Spring continues its Europe-wide legacy of quashing the traditionally high purchase price that many UK drivers say stops them from making the switch to an EV.

Rewriting the EV rulebook, the price also places Dacia’s all-electric supermini comfortably inside the UK’s top 10 most affordable new cars, regardless of how they are powered.

The five-door supermini debuts in the UK with a choice of mid-range Expression or top-of-the-range Extreme trim levels and offers a range of up to 186 miles.

With demand for the All-New Spring expected to be high, those who pre-order guarantee to be amongst the first to get behind the wheel. As well as locking-in

the £14,995 on-the-road launching price, pre-order customers get an additional and complimentary £250 towards accessories, public charging, or a contribution for a home charger through Mobilize Power Solutions. This choice recognises that everyone has different requirements.

Spring comes with a choice of a 45 hp, or a more powerful 65 hp/48 kW motor, which coupled with its lightweight design that makes it the only fully electric car in Europe under one tonne, ensures good performance around town and on the open road. Using its 7kW charger, the compact 26.8 kWh battery can be charged from 20% to 100% on a suitable domestic

outlet in less than 11 hours, or in just four hours on a 7kW wall box.

Starting from Expression trim, available with the Electric 45 or 65 powertrain, standard equipment includes a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, height-adjustable 3-spoke steering wheel, Media Control system with USB port, speed limiter, cruise control, steering wheel mounted controls, central locking with remote control, electric front windows, rear parking sensors, 12V socket, manual air conditioning and 15-inch wheels (only on Electric 65).

The Extreme trim, exclusively paired to the Electric 65 powertrain, adds copper interior and exterior finishes, electric mirrors and rear windows, the Media Nav Live multimedia system with 10-inch centre screen, two USB ports and wireless connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a bi-directional charger allowing you to use the All-New Spring as a power source for external appliances.

All-New Spring will arrive in the UK in October. Pre-orders are open now.

ROAD TEST: CUPRA FORMENTOR – THE FUTURE FOR SEAT

Within large groups like Volkswagen Audi it is arguably more difficult to differentiate between models within the same corporate garage. SEAT found the answer though with the Cupra range, indeed the name SEAT will in due course no longer grace any motor vehicles as the brand completely merges into Cupra. Originally Cupra were the sports orientated models within the SEAT line-up, but the name then became a separate brand. The SEAT name will disappear completely in the near future.

While some Cupras are very obviously SEAT models the Spanish carmaker has increasingly produced individual models unique to the Cupra brand. The Formentor was the first such model and even though the largest engine in the range is only

2.0-litres it sounds fantastic on start-up. Although this is ‘manufactured’ sound it does add to the appeal, and with 310PS of performance and four-wheel-drive it lives up to the soundtrack.

Prices start from £32,030 and much of the kit in the top-of-the-range versions finds its way into the lead-in models too. There’s a 12” touchscreen, full matrix LED lighting, auto-dimming rear view mirror, cornering lights, wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control, heated steering wheel and keyless entry and start.

The engine line-up starts with a 1.5 TSi, 150PS, through to the 2.0-litre 310PS mentioned earlier. There are manual and automatic transmission choices, all-

wheel-drive and petrol/electric hybrids. As ever, especially with VAG products, there is rather too much digitalisation, and a consequent lack of buttons, but familiarity over time would make life easier. That apart it’s a very nice place to be with, in my top line model, extremely comfortable seats, an impressive build quality and the general feel of this being an upmarket car.

At £48,310 it may seem expensive, but look at some of the rivals and it begins to look competitive. Despite the lack of a premium-badge it has the advantage of being something different to the usual premium crowd.

On the road the VZ3 4Drive handles extremely well for such a large machine, with sports suspension and all-wheel-drive that’s perhaps not surprising, and the ride is comfortably firm compared to similar less compliant sports models within the VAG stable.

This is an impressive machine and for my money still the pick of the Cupra range, being a very individual model rather than a bespoke, or tailored pick straight from the pages of the SEAT catalogue.

OCEAN AUTOMOTIVE

ROAD TEST: SKODA ENYAQ COUPE – COMFORTABLE EV STAR

If you’re in the market for an all-electric SUV then there’s a myriad of choice, however amongst the surfeit of choices one manufacturer that doesn’t crop up as often as it should is Skoda. The Czech company only produce one EV and it’s the Enyaq in either full SUV or Coupe-SUV.

The range starts from £38,970 for the SUV and £46,440 for the Coupe-SUV, and it is the latter that we’re concentrating on in this road test. Standard fare across the line-up includes LED Matrix headlights, adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, wireless charging, Tri-zone climate control, auto dimming rear view mirror, panoramic glass roof and navigation. It’s an impressive list!

On the power front there are two outputs of 286PS and 346PS for the £54,820 vRS model, along with four editions or trim levels. Range extends from 332 miles up as far as 355 miles depending which model you choose. Performance, as you would

expect from an EV, is all about acceleration with the most relaxed 62 mph benchmark speed attained in 6.7 seconds, and the quickest just 5.5 seconds.

It’s a spacious car even in Coupe form with space aplenty for all occupants and their luggage, not to mention storage for an infinite amount of in-car detritus. There’s a premium ambience and it feels a little bit special when you’re inside the Enyaq. There’s also some nice detail touches such as the trademark Skoda umbrella in the driver’s door.

On the road the Enyaq is almost whisper quiet with little in the way of tyre and road noise and virtually nothing from wind noise. It handles extremely well for such a large machine and soaks up the very worst road surfaces you can find. It’s not perfect though!

On so many electric cars there seems to be an aversion to rear wipers, because so few EVs have one. Why? There are no symbols on the instrument cluster for the lighting, just on the switch itself which is tucked away and hence not easy to view. The driver’s information screen is overly busy because it’s simply too small, so things aren’t that easy to assimilate quickly.

Overall though the Enyaq is an EV star, it’s supremely comfortable, well equipped and has a half decent range. It’s a mystery as to why we don’t see more of them on the road, but the fact that it’s Skoda’s only EV at the moment perhaps accounts for it.

LOTUS REVEALS

EMEYA HYPER-GT

Lotus has revealed the UK pricing and further details of its first electric hyper-GT, Emeya. It has also launched the configurator for the car online, for customers to design and personalise their vehicle ahead of placing their order.

The all-new Emeya features optimised design layout of the batteries so that 20% more cells can be packaged in the same space. By doing this the new car is able to offer improved charging capabilities, boosting range by up to 20%.

When using a 350kW DC fast-charger, Emeya can achieve a 10-80% charge within 18 minutes, with a maximum WLTP range of 379 miles.

Lotus has incorporated an innovative suspension design available with all wheel drive, advanced active roll control and rearwheel steering. Power of up to 905 bhp, enabling Emeya to accelerate from 0-62 mph in under 2.8 seconds. Lightweight carbon ceramic brakes reduce weight and

braking distance – which contribute to dynamic handling – as well as doubling the lifespan of the components.

Up to five driving modes including Range, Tour, Sport, Individual and Track are available and drivers can control the ride height, air suspension stiffness and acceleration response.   An electronically controlled air suspension system has advanced onboard sensors respond to changes in road conditions and automatically adjust the vehicle set-up.

Lotus claim Emeya sets a new benchmark for how a luxury car should look and feel with features including a spacious boot of up to 509 litres, power-assisted doors with sensors that can detect obstacles ensuring a door will not open if the vehicle is at risk

of damage. In addition, a kick sensor on the tailgate enables customers to easily open the boot, even when their hands are full.

There is also an advanced intelligent panoramic glass roof, which drivers can switch between opaque and clear. This gives the interior a feeling of space there is the option to turn individual sections of the roof opaque, enabling them to block out direct sunlight while keeping the rest of the roof open.

The Emeya also features cutting-edge technologies including intelligent EV routing, which is capable of learning individual driving patterns, such as departure times, destinations, and routes, and an expansive Augmented Reality headup display for the driver.

There are three Emeya variants: the entry point for the range starting at £94,950, the S from £107,450 and the R, this is the flagship model, starting at £129,950.   Emeya was launched in China on 18 January and will be arriving in the UK later this year.

Why Jamie Oliver’s mentor Gennaro Contaldo wants to banish boring boiled veg

Chef Gennaro Contaldo talks about how to cook vegetables the Italian way.

Gennaro Contaldo has a bone to pick with traditional British Sunday roasts.

The Italian chef has lived in England for over 50 years now, and he suggests the food here could see one big improvement.

“When you have a Sunday roast somewhere, [you get] three vegetables: boiled potato, boiled broccoli, boiled beans – they don’t taste of anything! Sometimes you get the beans and they’re so hard,” Contaldo says.

Instead, he wants “flavour” in his veg – and it’s really not that difficult to do.

“Salt it, put a bit of garlic in, season it with olive oil, or squeeze a lemon on top – hallelujah!” he says with his signature enthusiasm, often seen on TV when he appears alongside his protégé, Jamie Oliver.

These are “the humble things you buy every day”, Contaldo says, so it’s about time we treat our veg properly.

“Where I come from, we celebrate all the vegetables – they used to call us ‘leaves eaters’, because we used to eat a lot of vegetables,” says Contaldo, who heralds from Minori on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

In the “small village” he grew up in, Contaldo says everyone had an allotment and it was the done thing to swap different types of

fruit and veg with your neighbours – all of which was, of course, in season.

And when you get Contaldo talking about his favourite varieties, he can barely contain his excitement.

“It is all such a pleasure. Even the zucchini –you fry, you soak it, you cook it with pasta. The humble onion – onions are so beautiful! Onions, you don’t just fry them. Onions can be done in so many different ways. And the potato – it’s not just a chip.”

There are “hundreds of different ways” to cook vegetables, Contaldo says, and that’s part of “Italian culture”.

Despite what you might think, “Meat plays little part where I come from”, he explains. “We used to have lovely meat – but once every other week.”

That’s why Contaldo has dedicated his latest cookbook to vegetables, aptly called Verdure. Each chapter is dedicated to a different vegetable – from artichokes, fennel and rocket, to mushrooms, aubergines, beetroot and more.

Vegetables might be central to the book, but it’s not entirely vegetarian. “There is a lot mixed with meat – guanciale, pancetta, fish – combined all together, but the hero at the end is the verdure, the vegetable.”

Contaldo is passionate about seasonality –that was, after all, how he grew up.

“Now, you can get almost anything… In England, especially London [where Contaldo lives] you can get everything you want. But I won’t touch the stuff. Imagine –now there are cherries everywhere.”

Contaldo says when cherries are in season he will “indulge himself”, but for now, he has the “pleasure of waiting” – meaning the first crop isn’t “spoiled” when it eventually comes.

chocolate – which he calls “delicious” and urges everyone to try.

on TV shows like Saturday Kitchen and updating his Instagram account for his 800k followers – Contaldo gives a lot of credit to his Mediterranean diet.

“I eat a lot of vegetables – whatever is in season – I eat a lot of pasta as well,” he says.

“It does help, it helped me. All the people I know where I come from, they all eat a lot of vegetables and beans.”

He adds: “At my age, it’s a privilege and I wish it for everyone. With good luck and working very hard, I’m still enjoying being a cook. And do you know what cooks do? Cooks make people happy through cooking, and this is what I do.”

Words by Prudence Wade,

Right now, artichokes are in season in Italy – and that’s what everyone there is eating.

“You go from north to south, artichokes, artichokes, artichokes. People say, how do you eat artichokes every day? Because you do the vegetable in so many different ways,” Contaldo explains – and some of these dishes appear in the book, like artichoke pâté and tuna-filled artichoke hearts.

Now 75, Contaldo thinks back to his youth, when “there was no freezer” so “everything had to be seasonal” – so maybe it’s time we all tried some new things with our veg.

Take a traditional recipe from Contaldo’s village, which marries up aubergine and

“You fry the aubergines in egg and as soon as it’s fried, you put it straight in cocoa powder and sugar. Then you leave it to absorb, then you melt some chocolate with liquor in and put that on top and eat.”

And his love of food comes from a young age, too – he tracks it back to when his father, who was a linen dealer, made him sit in a friend’s restaurant at around 10 years old while he went off to work.

“I liked it so much, every time I had the chance I used to go help,” he remembers. “My job was simple – preparing the vegetables was one of my things.”

Now a septuagenarian and still going strong – constantly writing recipes, appearing

INGREDIENTS

250g frozen spinach

1 x 250g tub ricotta

1 egg

40g grated Parmesan, plus extra for sprinkling

Pinch of grated nutmeg

Sea salt

250g ‘00’ flour, plus extra for dusting

For the tomato sauce:

2tbsp extra virgin olive oil

2 garlic cloves, finely sliced

1 x 400g can chopped tomatoes

Sea salt

INGREDIENTS

4 eggs, separated

225g caster sugar

130g plain flour, sifted

2tsp Paneangeli baking powder, sifted (or regular baking powder)

150g ground almonds

275g carrots, grated

A little icing sugar, sifted

Handful of flaked almonds

Spinach gnocchi

1. First make the tomato sauce. Heat the olive oil in a heavy based pan over a medium heat and sweat the garlic for a minute or so, then add the tomatoes with a little water (rinsed from the can) and a little salt. Cover with a lid and cook over a medium-low heat for about 25 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, make the gnocchi. Bring a pot of salted water to the boil and cook the frozen spinach for about five minutes until defrosted and cooked through. Drain well, squeezing out the excess liquid with your hands, then place on a chopping board and finely chop.

3. Place the spinach in a large bowl with the ricotta, egg, Parmesan, nutmeg and a little salt, and gradually add in the flour. Mix well until you obtain a smooth, soft dough.

4. On a lightly floured work surface, roll the dough out into a long sausage shape. Using a sharp knife, cut into two-and-a-half-centimetre lengths. Continue doing this until all the dough has been used up.

5. Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil and drop the gnocchi into the water in batches, simmering for a minute or so until they rise to the top.

6. Using a slotted spoon or a spider strainer, lift the gnocchi out of the water and transfer to a dish. Pour over the tomato sauce and gently mix. Serve immediately with a sprinkling of grated Parmesan, if you like.

Carrot and almond cake SERVES 8

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C fan/180°C/gas mark 4. Grease a 20-centimetre round springform cake tin and line it with baking paper.

2. In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together for about 10 minutes, until nice and creamy. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff.

3. Fold the flour, Paneangeli (or baking powder), ground almonds and grated carrots into the egg yolk mixture, then fold in the stiffened egg whites.

4. Pour the mixture into the lined cake tin and bake in the oven for 55-60 minutes, until risen and cooked through. If you insert a wooden skewer, it should come out clean.

5. Remove from the oven, then leave to cool completely before carefully removing it from the tin. Place on a plate and dust the top with icing sugar and a handful of flaked almonds, before serving.

This cake is best eaten fresh, but will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.

Savoury asparagus tart SERVES 4

INGREDIENTS

375g ready-made shortcrust pastry

200g asparagus

150g ricotta

4 eggs

30g grated Parmesan

100g Parma ham, roughly torn

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Crunchy mixed salad, to serve

2. Roll out the pastry and use it to line the bottom of the prepared tin. Cover the pastry with baking paper, top with baking beans and bake blind for about 15 minutes, until the sides of the pastry have cooked through and are golden.

3. Using a large spoon, remove the beans and then the baking paper from the pastry case and return the pastry to the oven for a further five to 10 minutes, until the base is a pale golden colour.

4. Remove from the oven and prepare the filling. Reduce the oven temperature to 130°C fan/150°C/gas mark 2.

5. Finely chop most of the asparagus, reserving seven or eight spears, then bring a pot of salted water to the boil and cook the asparagus for about three minutes until just tender, then drain well and leave to cool.

6. In a bowl, combine the ricotta, eggs, Parmesan, Parma ham, a little salt and pepper and the chopped asparagus. Fill the pastry case with this mixture, then arrange the whole asparagus spears over the top. Bake in the lower third of the oven for about 40 minutes, until the filling has set.

7. Remove from the oven and leave to rest for five minutes before serving with a crunchy mixed salad.

Baccello

Take a stroll down Christchurch highstreet and you will discover Baccello, where you can indulge in unique wines and delicious authentic Italian cicchetti.

Our visit was a delightful journey into Italian culinary, from the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted with a warm welcome that set the tone for an enjoyable lunch.

There is no doubt about the passion the owners have for what they do. They light up while they share with us the concept behind this venture, their dedication to sourcing the finest products and offering, not just food and drink, but a whole experience when you visit the establishment.

With so many choices of wine on offer, we listen fascinated as they point out a few special ones including their very own label – which I encourage you to try, each sip a testament to craftsmanship and dedication. They explain how they rotate which ones they offer by the glass regularly so that people can come in and try something different every time, helping to expand the palate and take you on a taste adventure.

The Authentic Italian cicchetti spread was a symphony of flavours. The selection of cheeses and meats offered a tantalising array of tastes and textures, showcasing the richness of Italian cuisine, while the freshly baked bread tied everything together flawlessly. Every bite was a reminder of Italy’s culinary heritage.

You are spoilt for choice with the selection of bruschetta on offer, we sampled a few of these flavour combinations, each one offering an explosion of flavour on the taste buds. Interestingly we each had a different favourite which just shows how they cater for a range of tastes. You can’t really go wrong with what you order but I would recommend trying the smoked mackerel, and the classic option - Italian tomatoes with caramelised onions in a balsamic dressing.

The polenta chips were a revelation –golden bites of crispy perfection, I urge you to try these! The chilli prawns and meatballs also went down a treat, there really is so much on offer here you could easily spend a leisurely couple hours sampling all their culinary delights while sipping on a delicious wine.

Bacello’s dedication to authenticity was evident in every detail, from the carefully curated wine list to the expertly crafted cicchetti. It was an experience that left us longing to return, a true taste of Italy in the heart of Dorset. It’s a must-visit destination for wine and food enthusiasts alike.

This company are superb. I’m on the Isle of Wight and had been let down by a company who took my order then wouldn’t/ couldn’t deliver there. From my first call to the fitting, everything was excellent… I’m delighted with the worktops and the service was first class. It was competitively priced too. Would highly recommend!

– Google Reviews

Good service all round: from the initial survey and template (taking time to get 100% accuracy) to fabrication and installation. The result shows a vast improvement on what was there before. Cheaper worktop options are available but for quartz, stone, or marble, this is the place to go.

– Google Reviews

I just had some new quartz worktops installed by Portman Stone last month and I couldn’t be happier. The staff in the showroom were so helpful and gave me some good design ideas. Their fitting team were also very friendly and professional. I would highly recommend as they are a great company to use for stone worktops.
