www.northfieldadaptations.co.uk info@northfieldadaptations.co.uk We are excited to introduce our new showroom, believed to be unique on the South Coast of England. Showcasing products and designs for bathrooms and kitchens along with accompanying accessories and easy access ramp designs, all associated with assisted easy access living for the home and the workplace. Northfield have been working in conjunction with local Councils for over 15 years supplying and installing accessible bathrooms, kitchens and ramps under the Disabled Facilities Grant System, as well as undertaking adaptation work for private customers, hence we believed it a natural path to open a showroom offering these products to our customers to view and trial. Our experience in this field means we often work in delicate and sensitive situations and realise that empathy and understanding is required at all times to our clients based on one's own individual needs and requirements aimed to improve their living facilities at home or in the workplace. Our showroom is open to the Medical Profession, Councils, Occupational Therapists, Care Homes, Housing Associations, Bathroom Fitters and of course Private Customers. Working alongside AKW Medicare, the UK’s leading manufacturer of accessible bathroom, kitchen and daily living products for the elderly and individuals with reduced mobility, we have a comprehensive range of budget to high-end products displayed within the showroom. A selection of tiles and safety flooring is also on show and further advise is offered if required to customise the rooms colour scheme and finish. Please call to make an appointment and we look forward to making your living made easy.

THE BETTER BLIND COMPANY

The Shade and Shutter Company

Installing window blinds is one of the easiest and most effective ways to instantly change the appearance of a room in your home. However, why should you choose blinds over other options like curtains? Whether you want to install blinds for practical or aesthetic reasons, here are five key advantages of installing window blinds in your home. 1. Control the Light Entering the Room Window blinds provide you with more control over the amount of light entering the room because you can cover the entire window or just part of the window according to your own needs. For example, the slats on some window blinds are fitted so tightly together that they do not allow any light in at all. This could be ideal for a room where you have a home theatre or in your bedroom where you don’t want any light to wake you up in the morning. 2. Countless Styles, Colours, & Patterns Window blinds come in an endless variety of styles, colours, and patterns, allowing you to create the perfect look in your kitchen, living room, or bathroom. Choose from mini blinds, vertical blinds, roman blinds, and even cordless blinds, which are safer for children and pets as well as being very elegant.

3. Wide Variety of Materials The variety of materials that blinds come in allows you to choose the blind that is most suitable for you in terms of both price and style. For example, if your living room contains wooden furniture, you can complement the room by installing wooden blinds. However, if you find wooden blinds too expensive, you can opt for faux wood instead to keep the costs down. You then have plastic blinds, bamboo blinds, aluminium blinds, and other materials to choose from to ensure that you can always find the right blinds for any room in your home. 4. Enjoy Complete Privacy Blinds provide you with a level of privacy that you cannot get from many other options such as curtains. For the ultimate in privacy control, consider installing top-down shades. Using these, you can lower the shade from the top so that the natural light can come in, but you can still enjoy as much privacy as you require. 5. Easy to Maintain Finally, one of the best things about window blinds is that they are typically very easy to maintain. In fact, many blinds simply require a quick wipe with

a damp cloth from time to time to remove the dust. Compare this to curtains, which need to be washed every once in a while, and blinds start to look like the most convenient option. In addition, they are also long lasting, especially blinds made from wood or aluminium, meaning you won’t have to replace them until you decide you are ready for a change.

Find the Perfect Blinds for Your Home Whatever style you have in mind for the rooms in your home, consider installing window blinds. Not only can they become a unique feature of the room, but they also don’t have to cost the earth. In fact, they can often be cheaper to buy and install than curtains, especially if you choose an option like faux wood instead of real wood. So have a look online or in the store next time you go shopping and try to find the perfect window blinds for your home.

This is how paint colour in your home can affect your mood A colour expert shares how the hues on our walls can impact how we feel. The colours on our walls at home affect how we feel much more than we realise, according to Marianne Shillingford, creative director at Dulux. Whether you need a mood lift, a creative space to think or calming place to chill out, throwing some colour on the walls can make all the difference, she says. “We fill our wardrobe with colours that help us to become something when we need to. We use colour if we’re going out for a wedding or a big celebration, we’ll put on more colour than we normally would if we went

“So we use colour all the time as a language to express

the way we feel, or how we want to feel. And in our homes, it is more important than anything to get it right.” And spending more time at home during the last two years means many of us want to make changes to reinvigorate the space we’ve become overly familiar with. “Adding little pops of colour – rather than completely redecorating – is something that’s achievable and changeable without being overwhelming,” she adds. This is what Shillingford suggests you should do to evoke different moods using paint… To create a stimulating environment… “Red is the colour that has the longest visual wavelength – it draws your attention. Red has long been associated with eating rooms, restaurants and dining rooms, because it’s the most stimulating colour. It stimulates Alamy/PA

It’s a fact that being in nature can help soothe a troubled soul, so the colours of nature – whether they are soft, organic blues, grass greens or the colours of raw organic materials – they’re not overwhelming, which I think is perfect if you’ve got children and you’re trying to juggle work and family life.” To evoke feelings of sleepiness… “Dark blues and deep greens are perfect for helping you sleep,” says Shillingford. “Some people do the whole wrap of a room and I think it can look lovely, but I get the feeling people are starting to paint out [sections of a room]. You could split your bedroom into two different spaces, say if you painted up the wall onto the ceiling and down the other side, to create a sort of canopy around your bed in a slighter deeper colour.” This could “help you relax”, she suggests, “Then you could have a more energising colour somewhere else in the room, that helps you get up in the morning.” LEFT Pale Olivine and Mallow White from the Dulux Heritage range | Dulux Heritage/PA

everything taste better and sweeter. It’s an incredibly convivial colour for an eating space,” says Shillingford, who recommends Fitzrovia Red or Pugin Red from the Dulux Heritage range. “You’d be amazed how a tiny flash of red can create a little pocket of energy and excitement… Red is hugely powerful, but it’s one of those colours that you tend to overdecorate quite quickly if you use too much of it.” To evoke calmness… “Creating calm in any space is about shorter wavelength colours – like blues and greens, that reconnect us with nature,” says Shillingford. “They appear slightly further away from us, so when we paint them on the walls, it makes the space feel less enclosed and more connected with the outdoors.

From blocks of flats to chancel repair. We’ll make sure you’re protected!

Sector (England) Regulations came into force on 1st June 2020, which simply put a “best practice” requirement on a statutory footing.

We have over 30 years experience of providing our specialist property insurance services to a wide range of customers. From studio flats to large blocks, commercial property to chancel repair. Our team will listen to your requirements and advise on the best policy for you. Our job is to ensure you are covered correctly based on the information you’ve provided. We will always make sure you are not over or under insured.

Landlords need to have the electrical installations in their properties inspected and tested by a qualified and competent person, and to do so at least every 5 years. A copy of the Electrical Safety Report must be provided to Tenants, and if requested to do so, the Local Authority. Where works are required, there are legal timeframes for rectifying problems and producing a final Electrical Safety Report. Local Authorities have been given powers to deal with Landlords who fail to comply eg arrange for the repairs to be done and then recover the cost from the Landlord. For Landlords who don’t comply, a fine of up to £30,000 can be levied.

Why everyone should have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) Whenever I see clients I always recommend that they review and, if necessary, update their Wills and LPAs. A first look at Iceland’s hottest new attraction Easily accessible via a new direct flight from the UK to Akureyri, this sizzling new spa demands a trip to northern Iceland, says Sarah Marshall. Bubbling both below and above the surface, volcanic activity has defined Iceland’s landscape. Lava fields tangle from the foot of gas-spewing peaks and steam spurts from cracks in the ground. Naturally, the Earth’s non-stop rumblings have shaped a national culture too. Bathing in hot springs is a tradition stretching back centuries. From dipping in hidden lagoons to pumping heated water into purpose-built pools, Icelanders have harnessed the power of geothermal energy to create one of the country’s biggest national pastimes.

So what else makes it so special? It might sound a bit technical, but having 27 outlets pumping water into the lagoon is a game-changer, allowing water to flow evenly, so there are no annoying cold patches to surprise you. A choice of two swim-up bars avoids long queues. Plus it’s open until midnight – later than any other purposebuilt lagoon in Iceland – meaning you can stay out later to watch the midnight sun or catch a glimpse of the northern lights, depending on the time of year. How’s it different to the Blue Lagoon? Although built by the same design team, BASALT Architects, the main difference is… it isn’t blue. While water flowing from lava fields into Keflavik’s world-famous attraction is rich in silica (giving it a distinctive milky blue colour), at Forest Lagoon it’s simply a mountain spring heated by energy from the Earth’s core. The source was discovered during digging for a new toll tunnel in 2015, now part of Iceland Ring Road Route 1. General manager Tinna Jóhannsdóttir claims the water still contains beauty-boosting minerals collected on its journey through millennia-old basalt rocks. But the main wellbeing benefit is simply the relaxing sensation of bathing in a hot spring.

Train smarter The really good news? Doing less workouts – and training for shorter bursts – doesn’t mean you’re falling short. “You do not have to be in the gym for an hour every night to get an effective workout: 30 minutes or even 15 is still plenty of time to release some feel-good hormones, break a sweat and get those muscles engaged,” says Goldsmith-Cottrell. “An easy way to

Ways to weave white decor into your home

Whether warm or wowing, a splash of white makes for an easy makeover, says Sam Wylie-Harris. It’s a timeless summer staple, which can brighten up the blandest of spaces – no wonder our love affair with white furnishings shows no sign of waning. “The perfect simplicity of white is not to be underestimated, its versatility can warm a cold space, brighten a dull one, or turn a lifeless interior into an enticing personal home,” says Chrissie Rucker OBE, founder of The White Company. “A white scheme is brilliant for bringing a sense lightness and serenity to a space.” When decorating with white, Rucker’s advice is to pile on the texture and to use natural elements, which connect us back to nature. “A super-soft rug underfoot, or a diaphanous drape at a window can truly transform a room,” she says. “Add in weathered wood, slubby linen or marbled slate to add interest.”

For walls, opt for warm whites rather than cold, blueywhite tones. “Ivory, alabaster, chalk and many other soft whites are on the market. I love its almost spa-like quality, which in our hectic world is lovely to come home to,” Rucker adds. Wil Law, home stylist at John Lewis & Partners, says:

Dark rums for a taste of island life Savour summer moments with a rum cocktail, says Sam Wylie-Harris. Rum has got to be one of the most laid-back libations, perfect for when you want to channel those chilled out holiday vibes. “With its roots in the Caribbean, for many it embodies the idea of sunshine and long sandy beaches – which is enough to make anyone smile,” says Dawn Davies, buying director at The Whisky Exchange (thewhiskyexchange.com). Davies notes there are now “some incredible rums coming from all over the world – Glasgow to Australia, and everywhere in between”. And with a myriad of styles and flavours to choose from, there’s definitely something for everyone. Davies says: “Rum’s the spirit of the moment. This is partly due to its versatility, with unaged rums perfect in classic cocktails like daiquiris and pina coladas – and aged ones great for sipping or mixing, as an alternative to whisky or cognac.” Ready for a taste of the golden stuff? We’ve rounded up four top drops, and suggested serves to sip in the sunshine…

What is the Japandi trend and how can you get the look? Sam Wylie-Harris talks to an interior design expert about how to work the Japandi trend in your home. Japandi décor style is one of the most popular interior trends right now – racking up no less than 56.5 million mentions across Instagram and TikTok, according to industrial-inspired home accessories and lighting brand, Industville. Not yet familiar? As the term suggests, Japandi is a mix of Japanese and Scandi style – a combination with endless appeal. “While geographically, Japan and Scandinavia may be worlds apart, when it comes to design, the two countries are synonymous with creating interiors rooted in simplicity, comfort, neutral colours and natural materials,” says Alysha Alli, who heads up the interior design team at Redrow homebuilders.

Scandi interiors can often favour clear whites, but Alli recommends replacing this with a light stone, beige or fawn tone, to avoid your interior feeling more Nordic than Japandi. “While Nordic design favours lighter colours, Japanese interiors can often appear more daring by introducing richer colours through design accessories. “Other authentic, natural materials, such as bamboo, rattan, cotton or hemp, offer an easy way to introduce texture and a natural element into your interior,” Alli adds. She says eco-friendly materials are perfect in the bedroom too, which should be rich in nature and free of tech for a good night’s sleep. “And perfect for introducing that unpolished look synonymous with ‘wabi-sabi’,” Alli notes. “Assorted warm metals also work beautifully with these natural materials and provide a contrast in texture.” Where both Scandi and Japanese interiors share a love of nature and house plants, as Alli points out, Japandi interior leans towards fewer but bigger plants, where the larger plant is used as a focal point in the room. “Other ways to bring the outdoors in can be through adding branches to large ceramics for a vase vignette, which offer a sustainable homemade accessory.” Minimalist cosiness To ensure you strike the balance between Japan’s minimalism and Scandi’s cosiness, Alli says: “Adopting a minimalist approach by decluttering will allow your home’s architectural features and clean lines to shine.

“Decluttering is an easy way to create the illusion of a

Ways to weave woven accessories into your home

Natural woods and light shades soothe the senses, says Sam Wylie-Harris. When it comes to clever contrasts in decor, wicker furniture and white are a natural choice. Casual but chic, rattan loves the light, with its wicker weaves and open holes; beautifully balances a rustic feel when clad in cotton; works brilliantly with reclaimed wood furniture, and feels right at home with sisal and jute rugs. No wonder we love blending it into summer settings. It’s also perfect for channelling holiday vibes, with its nature-inspired colours and texture, and works so well with sage green accents and timber tones. Here are an assortment of ways to get your wicker fix, and introduce some contemporary country charm to your home…

ROAD TEST: VO LVO XC 6 0 – SCAN D I NAVIAN C O O L My Brother has a Volvo 850 estate dating back to 1995, yet despite its venerable age and a not inconsiderable mileage it still has a reassuring solidity in the way it drives, the way the doors close, the way the switchgear operates. Its design is such that even without the parking aids you can pretty much see every corner, so parking is far from difficult.
