Some gifts lasts a lifetime. This one lasts for generations. Meet Jacqui Sieger: Art that becomes part of the family
Renowned Dorset and New Forest artist Jacqui Sieger has spent a lifetime capturing the beauty of the places and subjects that inspire her. Now, alongside her muchloved landscapes, seascapes and floral paintings, Jacqui is turning her talent to something particularly special — personalised oil portraits. We caught up with Jacqui to discover more about her remarkable career, her love of the Dorset coastline and why commissioning a portrait could create a gift that is treasured for generations. Jacqui, you’ve been painting for most of your life. Where did it all begin? I started painting when I came back from America, when I was about 14 or 15, so I’ve been painting ever since. Over the years, alongside running a farm and my other business interests, I’ve always found time to paint and sell my work privately. Painting has never really felt like a job to me. It’s something I’ve always loved doing, and I think that passion comes through in the work. You’ve been a member of the Fine Art Trade Guild for nearly 30 years. What does that mean to you? It’s a great organisation to be part of. When you become a member, your work is assessed and they make sure that your standard of painting meets their requirements before you’re awarded your badge. I’ve exhibited with them in the States and also at the NEC show, which were fantastic experiences. Although I’m a local artist, my work has reached an international audience, with pieces sold to customers across the States and further afield, which is something I’m incredibly proud of. These days, though, I’m not particularly worried about which shows I’m doing. I advertise my work, people see it, and I receive commissions from both home and abroad. Thankfully, customers seem very happy with what I produce, and that’s what matters to me.

Your work is strongly influenced by Dorset and the surrounding area. Why is the landscape so important to you? I was born in Swanage, so the landscape around Purbeck and the Dorset coast is very much part of me. The colours, the sea, the stone, the countryside — they’re all things that are ingrained in my memories. You grow up surrounded by these places and they become part of who you are. People often ask me why, given my background, I don’t paint more horses. I do love horses, but I’ve always had a particular love for the sea and the landscape. You might see something like Portland Lighthouse and immediately recognise the colours and the beautiful stone. Those are the things that inspire me.
You now have your own gallery where people can see your work in person. Yes, and everyone is welcome. I love people coming into the gallery, having a cup of tea and having a chat. It’s not just about people walking in, buying a painting and leaving. I enjoy getting to know people and hearing their stories. Quite a few people come for lunch as well, and I keep in touch with customers. If I’ve painted something new that I think they’ll like, I’ll let them know. I think that personal relationship is really important. And if someone has a special place that they’d love captured, you can paint that for them? Absolutely. I do commissioned paintings, so if there’s somewhere special to you, I can create a painting of it. It could be your home, a favourite holiday destination, a view that means something to you, a particular landscape or somewhere connected with a special memory. That’s one of the lovely things about a commission. You’re not simply buying something off the wall — you’re creating something personal.

You’ve

something
particularly
exciting to your range — personalised oil portraits. Yes. Portraits are something I’ve only recently started doing seriously. I’d always concentrated on seascapes, landscapes and florals, but I thought I’d try my hand at portraits. It’s been really successful, and I’m really enjoying it. We’ve recently shipped a large portrait over to New York, which was quite exciting. Why do you prefer working in oils? For me, oils give me the feeling and depth that I want in a painting. Acrylic dries very quickly, which can be useful, but I don’t feel I can get the same feeling into acrylic that I can with oils. With oils, I can work into the painting, build up the colours and create that three-dimensional effect. You can see different colours coming through, and I think that gives the finished portrait a real sense of life.
So if somebody wanted a portrait of their children or perhaps a family portrait, how does the process work? They can provide me with photographs, and we can discuss exactly what they want. It could be a portrait of a child, a partner, a parent, the whole family or even a much-loved pet. We can talk about the composition, size and what they’d like the finished painting to look like. I’d generally allow around a month for a portrait because I’m working in oil and I want to give it the time it needs. And what makes a personalised portrait such a special gift? I think that’s the really exciting thing about portraits. You could buy somebody all sorts of presents, but a personalised oil portrait is something completely different.
It’s

This summer has been incredibly hot, though. Everything seemed to turn into the Sahara Desert for a while! Thankfully, after some rain, we’re starting to see that lovely green coming back. Finally, what would you say to someone thinking about commissioning a painting or portrait? Come and have a chat with me. Whether it’s a portrait of someone you love, a special place, your home, a favourite landscape or something completely different, we can talk about what you have in mind. And if you’d simply like to see the paintings, come to the gallery, have a cup of tea and have a chat. Art should be personal. I want people to look at one of my paintings and feel something — and hopefully enjoy it for many, many years to come.
For those wishing to experience Jacqui’s artwork in person, she has a small working gallery in the BH24 2SG area, where visitors can browse and purchase original paintings, prints and greeting cards. Visits are by appointment, so please telephone ahead to arrange a convenient time. Free local delivery is also available.

Ways to draw on the cosy cottage decor trend
You don’t need to live in the country to embrace a calm, relaxed lifestyle, says Sam Wylie-Harris. Inspiring thoughts of slow living and comforting, rural charm of the countryside, the cosy cottage trend leans into natureinspired tones. Think warm woods, exposed beams, open fireplaces, lived-in layers… and stems from simple, down-to-earth decor which makes you feel right at home. Rekindling thoughts of yesteryear, a little bit of wear-and-tear, artisan ceramics, textured accents and a heritage feel perfectly reflect the cosy vibe. Moreover, the aesthetic makes mismatched pieces complement each other with their autumnal shades of burnt oranges, brick reds and mossy greens, against a backdrop of mid-century modern furnishings. Here’s how to echo the homespun feel with an aura of authenticity and some folksy allure… 01. Emma Bridgewater Autumn Splatter Medium Pasta Bowls, £33 each, Emma Bridgewater | Emma Bridgewater/PA

Winter cocktails for botanical enthusiasts
From a warming espresso martini to a fresh take on a sparkling classic, these tipples showcase a seasonal twist, says Sam Wylie-Harris. If you’re looking to up your cocktail repertoire, after some game-changing serves, or simply a small tweak on the classics, recreating recipes with botanicals, shrubs and spices can be the best tasting adventure. “Winter is a season of tradition, generosity and hospitality. Celebrations, festive gatherings and quiet fireside evenings call for drinks that connect people, warm the heart and elevate the simplest moments into memories,” suggests an excerpt from River Cottage Cocktails and Botanicals. “Spiced syrups and infused spirits offer practicality and a link to harvests past, while fresh citrus adds a spark of brightness, hope and vitality,” writes the author Josie Pink, general manager at River Cottage, an award-winning cookery school with an organic farm and restaurant, owned by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, nestled in the Axe Valley countryside, Devon.

“Rich in aroma, texture and flavour, winter cocktails are a harmonious blend of comfort and ingenuity – inviting slow, mindful enjoyment and the joy of shared warmth in the coldest months of the year,” suggests Pink. Ready to wet your whistle? These delectable drinks will tickle the tastebuds….
CHAI ESPRESSO MARTINI As Pink opines, “The Espresso Martini has seen a surge in popularity over the years and is now a staple feature on most cocktail menus. “This is a warming, aromatic twist on the classic cocktail, blending rich espresso with the complexity of chai spices.”

50ml vodka, 25ml coffee liqueur, 25ml espresso, 25ml chai syrup, 1 drop saline, coffee bean or star anise to garnish. To make saline: Dissolve 1 level tsp salt in 50ml water, then transfer to a dropper bottle for easy dosing. To make chai syrup: 100g brown sugar, 100ml water, 2 chai teabags, ¼tsp vanilla paste. Put the sugar and water into a heavy-based saucepan over a medium heat and stir occasionally until the sugar is dissolved. Bring to the boil, lower the heat and simmer for 2 minutes. Add the chai spice bags and simmer for a further 3 minutes. Remove from the heat, stir in the vanilla paste and allow to cool. Strain the syrup into a sterilised jar. Keep in the fridge and use within one month. METHOD Chill a martini glass or coupe. Half fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso, chai syrup and saline. Shake for at least 15 seconds until the shaker is very cold. Strain into the glass and garnish with a coffee bean or star anise.

CR ANBERRY AND ROSEMARY FIZ Z “A festive tipple – perfect for seeing in the new year!” suggests Pink. And with the holiday season winking at us from around the corner, time to get the ball rolling and try out this champagne cocktail for size. INGREDIENTS 20ml Cointreau (or other orange liqueur), 60ml cranberry juice, champagne or prosecco to top, rosemary sprigs to flame and crystalise for garnish. To crystalise the rosemary: 1 egg white lightly beaten, golden caster sugar to coat. Gently wash and pat dry thoroughly with kitchen paper. Using a small pastry brush, carefully coat each leaf with a thin layer of beaten egg white. Lightly dip into (or sprinkle with) caster sugar, ensuring the rosemary is evenly coated. Place the sugared herbs on a wire rack, or tray lined with baking paper and leave to dry in a cool dry place for several hours; or overnight until crisp. Once fully dried, store the crystallised herbs interleaved with baking paper in an airtight container. Use within one week. METHOD Chill a coupe glass. Light a few of the rosemary leaves then blow out the flame to reveal a smoke stream and immediately place your glass upside down over this. Half fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the orange liqueur and cranberry juice. Shake for at least 15 seconds until the shaker is frosted. Strain the drink into a coupe, top with champagne or prosecco and garnish with a crystalised (or fresh) sprig of rosemary.

SPICED BOURBON CRÈME BRÛLÉE Flaunting a signature brûléed top, Pink cites this concoction as a dessert and drink in one. “Including the egg yolk as well as the white gives the drink a luxurious custardy texture. It’s important to shake the ingredients in the order given, to ensure a silky texture and no curdling,” she highlights. INGREDIENTS 25ml bourbon whiskey, 50ml Irish Cream Liqueur (Bailey’s), 12ml chai syrup (to make in previous recipe), 1 organic medium egg, 12ml lemon juice, icing sugar to garnish. METHOD Chill a coupe glass. Put the egg into a cocktail shaker (without ice) and shake well to break it down. Add the cream liqueur and chai syrup and shake again. Fill the shaker three-quarters with ice, add the bourbon and lemon juice. Shake well for 15-20 seconds, or until the shaker is frosted. Double strain into a chilled coupe. Dust with icing sugar and wave a cook’s blowtorch over the surface to caramelise. Let the drink sit for 30 seconds to allow the top to set, then crack the brûlée and enjoy! Amazing Scottish castles you can actually stay in
Get a group of friends and family together and reenact your own version of the hit BBC One show in these fitting locations. BBC One’s Celebrity Traitors is back on screens, as Claudia Winkleman hosts a second batch of famous contestants as they scheme, lie and backstab in a Scottish castle. The 19th-century Ardross Castle in Scots Baronial style, located north of Inverness in the Highlands is set in 100 acres of parkland and formal gardens along the River Alness. From the ornate drawing room (used as the breakfast area in The Traitors), to the Billiard Room with tartan wallcoverings and the great hall, the grand interiors of Ardross are as much part of The Traitors’ storytelling as the contestants themselves. If the start of the new series is inspiring a stay in similar surroundings, here are some Scottish castles you can actually stay in.

For something truly unique, this medieval tower house – also known as Law Castle – was commissioned in 1467 as a wedding gift by King James II of Scotland for his daughter, Princess Mary Stewart. Located in the foothills of Law Hill in North Ayrshire, it became a law court at one point, complete with a prison in the pit, before falling into disrepair in the 19th century. Since then it’s been beautifully restored in its original medieval style. Featuring a stone spiral staircased, a great hall and a dungeon dining room over more than 3,000 square feet and six levels, there are views of the Firth of Clyde and the Isle of Arran. 4 crumpets 50g unsalted butter
2. While the bacon is frying, toast the crumpets.
4-5tbsp maple syrup, plus extra for drizzling

Raise a glass at the 5 best bars of 2026 From Hong Kong, Milan and Greece, these watering holes are at the top of their cocktail game, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
When it comes to a drinking discovery, there’s nothing like a global bar competition to whet your whistle and put you on the cutting edge of the world’s best bar scene. And to fast track you to the top bartending talent and experiences, this year’s list of The Best Bars 2026 (formerly The World’s 50 Best Bars) has been announced at a red carpet ceremony in Milan.
With a strong showing from Europe, three British bars made the list, with London’s Connaught Bar leading at number eight, and making the top 10. Highlighting

innovative mixology, game-changing serves and spins on the classics, here are the top five who took the coveted spots…
BAR LEONE, HON G KONG Crowned the winner for the second time in a row, the Hong Kong cocktail scene is proving its a big hitter with three other spots making the top-50 list. Taking a simplistic approach to bar culture and design, Italian co-founder Lorenzo Antinori has taken the concept of ‘cocktail popolari’, which translates to ‘cocktails of the people’, to another level… showing the real impact of the notion.

Cited as a tribute to the neighbourhood bars of Rome, where locals gather for coffee, aperitivi and casual conversation, think expertly executed classics with a strong Italian influence, and promise of aperitivo bliss with variations on a negroni.
MOEBIUS, MIL AN The cheers, applause and high-pitched whistles must have been deafening when Moebius grabbed the second spot in the host city. Also voted the Best Bar in Europe 2026, this is where a passion for haute cuisine (the restaurant has a Michelin star), music and a cocktail voyage of discovery collide beautifully together. Moreover, with a towering wall of more than 300 spirits’ labels, takeovers and guest appearances from international bartenders, live-music events, DJ’s and curated vinyl selection, it’s a one-stop shop for a fashionable taste of la dolce vita.

ALQUIMICO, CARTAGENA , COLOMBIA Slowly climbing up the ranks, Alquimico reached number eight in 2024, and also won the accolade this year for Best Bar in South America. Located in a 19th-century mansion in Cartagena’s historic centre, Alquimico combines creative mixology with local ingredients and community work, establishing itself as a concept bar with a purpose. Celebrating its routes, with a social focus on how the power of community can translate into ‘conscious hospitality’, the bar has grown from a team of five, to more than 100 people… redefining mixology and rooted in the richness of their land. How to use paint to make your space look more luxe From warm, earthy neutrals to muted pinks, to colour drenching, the right paint finishes will lend an air of opulence, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
When you think of before and afters, one of the simplest ways to change the entire aesthetic of a colour scheme is with a lick of paint. Especially when you’re looking to add warmth to a room, create a feature wall to let a favourite piece of furniture stand out or a prize work of art. “What I love about paint is it’s probably one of the most simplest ways you can transform a space,” says Cathryn Sanders, head of creative at Earthborn, who’s responsible for colour creation, trend direction and supporting the creative side of their photoshoots. “And if we’re talking about luxury, that’s when you don’t have to think about it being expensive because paint can do that quite easily. It can transform a room, it’s about creating a feeling the space has been thoughtfully considered. “If you think about a cohesive room colour, paint will bring it together, and you can also use contrasting shades for different features,” highlights Sanders. Here are some of her favourite ways to create a more sophisticated, layered feel…

Don’t be afraid of darker colours “When someone’s got a smaller space, or a north-facing room, they’re concerned about using a darker shade,” highlights Sanders. “But I would definitely say that darker doesn’t make the room smaller.” Moreover, she says darker colours can be incredibly luxurious because they create a sense of intimacy. “Deeper shades like greens and berry colours can make it feel like a rich and intimate space. “One example I saw quite recently, was someone’s home office. They’d used a dark forest green on their walls – and scaffold boards for shelving – so it had that natural-wood finish with the dark green… it felt like a nice, intimate, cocooning space,” says Sanders. Try introducing forest, hunter and deep greens; navy, inky and deeper blues, along with rich berry shades. “Then highlighting that with natural woods or grasses, that sort of thing,” she adds.

Start with warm, earthy neutrals There are quite a few ways you can do this, suggests Sanders. “Obviously you can think about tonal, so if you’re looking at the warm, earthy neutrals, then you can layer those across your space.” “So think about the walls, the ceiling, and the woodwork, but in a tonal-neutral shade. When people think about luxury, they might think stark white shades; but definitely warm, earthy neutrals can elevate a space by doing that. And not just picking one shade, having those tonal shades.” For a cohesive look, try related shades across walls, ceilings and woodwork in hues such as stone, clay, plaster and taupe, suggests Sanders. “They create softness without feeling flat.”

Think beyond soft pinks “I think we’re definitely seeing a lot more pink now, and it’s not those soft sweet pinks anymore,” underlines Sanders. “They feel a lot more grown-up, and again, they can add that touch of elegance… moving away from the sugary, traditional feminine spaces.” “If you pick a pink that’s got perhaps more of a brown, red, or lilac undertone, it does feel more sophisticated.” Versatile too, she says, can soften harder surfaces while adding warmth. “Pink doesn’t have to be used on all four walls – perhaps try it on cabinetry or panelling to make a feature.” She says they can be particularly effective in rooms that don’t receive much natural light, and rely on layered, artificial lighting. “They [pinks] can definitely give more of a rich feel.” Think a muted pink across walls and woodwork for a tonal look, or use a deeper berry shade as an accent. Try colour drenching Trending big time, painting everything the same shade – walls, ceiling, skirting boards and radiators – is one of the simplest ways to make a room drip in splendour. “I think colour drenching has been around before it even became colour drenching,” opines Sanders. “Move away from having your white skirtings, your white ceiling, white radiators… be brave and paint the walls, ceiling, and woodwork in cloaks of colour. “Or going back to tonal, what I was talking about with the warm, earthy neutrals, you could do it tonally – you don’t need to just pick one [colour], it’s thinking about being cohesive in what you’re doing.” And with this, she adds: “Be intentional with your shades – it’s not just about being bold for the sake of being bold. It’s about creating an atmosphere, and I think that’s what colour drenching is.”

Wildlife, fewer crowds and lush scenery Rachel Steinberg goes to the Central American country in the ‘green season’ in search of sloths, howler monkeys and cheaper prices.
I’m peering up from the roadside on the outskirts of La Fortuna wondering if Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci ever visited Costa Rica. It’s a fanciful thought, but the three-toed sloth who has just shifted his position in the cecropia tree to face me is wearing a grin so beguiling I can conjure just one worthy comparison. There are arguably only two countries in the world capable of selling an entire holiday around a single smile: France, for da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and Costa Rica, home to the languid, quirky sloth. “I always joke that sloths have a bit of Costa Rican DNA,” our excellent guide for the week, naturalist Fabian, tells me later. “We’re very laid-back, very relaxed, and we don’t stress much, which can sometimes even annoy people, but it’s the way sloths are. Whenever people in other countries think of sloths, they think of Costa Rica. “They always have a smile on their face. That’s why we identify very much with the sloth. We’ve been named one of the happiest countries in the world, and everyone who comes says that we are very welcoming.” Surprisingly, both of Costa Rica’s native sloth species – Hoffmann’s two-toed and Brown-throated threetoed – only officially became national symbols of wildlife in 2021, when even the law acknowledged their singular popularity.

Locals, suggests Fabian, are often able to identify which operators to avoid, but the best way to maximise your sightings, and guarantee an ethical experience, is by hiring a registered guide for a few hours at one of the many national parks, a full day, or even your whole trip. Night walks offer the opportunity to encounter creatures with a different circadian rhythm, from iconic red-eyed tree frogs to adorable kinkajous. If you do decide to embark on a Costa Rican wildlife adventure independently, my top tip is to look out for one ubiquitous object: the scope. Most guides carry the powerful magnifying devices and a tripod, so keep your eyes peeled for groups crowded around one, because they’ll be eyeing something of interest. If you’re polite, you might even be permitted to take a surprisingly decent phone picture from the lens. We are here during the ‘green’ season (May to November) – also a euphemism for ‘rainy’, but don’t let that dissuade you.

After winding our way up unexpectedly pastoral, cattledotted landscapes (with a tropical twist), we arrive at the country’s most well-known cloud forest, Monteverde. This is Costa Rica at its most mystical. The next morning, after wobbling across hanging bridges at Treetopia, we are strapped into harnesses and whizz dangling, like sloths on steroids, across a three-kilometre, seven-zipline course, 100 metres at its highest. I watch my companions disappear into foggy oblivion before we reunite, giddy and grinning. Suddenly the mist lifts, a floral perfume wafts from a nearby tree, and I am offered a perspective so exhilaratingly expansive it feels almost inconceivable that I am able to experience it without wings. On our last full day, as I nurse a coffee at Miamar, an impeccable beachfront resort down the Playa Espadilla sand from the famous Manuel Antonio National Park, Fabian obliges my request to explain his tattoos.

His right arm, a sleeve of flora and fauna, is a stunning tribute to his country’s natural abundance. I ask what he would pick as a national symbol, and Fabian points to the sea turtle on his upper arm. “Whenever I see them, it’s like the first time,” he explains. “It’s like falling in love. Simple swaps to make comfort food more nutritious this winter
Making some small changes can boost the nutritional value of your favourite wintry meals considerably. As temperatures begin to drop and rainy days become more frequent, have you noticed a growing desire for warm, sweet comfort food? Lizzie Sanchez, a registered dietitian, member of Nutritionist Resource and founder of Green Health Dietetics, explains that this is very common, and is linked to our biology and evolutionary instincts. “Our body naturally craves more energy at this time of the year because more fat will help keep us warmer throughout the winter. So, that’s one of the biggest reasons why we tend to crave higher energy and higher fat comfort foods in the colder months,” explains Sanchez. However, she adds that without mindful eating habits, seasonal cravings can contribute to significant weight gain over the winter period. The good news is that enjoying your favourite comfort foods doesn’t have to compromise your health. With a few simple ingredient alterations, you can make your go-to winter dishes more nutritious while still enjoying all the warmth and flavour they offer. Here are seven easy swaps to try this winter…

Go for a tomato-based soup rather than a creamy one “Avoiding creamy soups and going more for a more tomato-based soup is always a really good idea,” says Sanchez. “If you really miss that creaminess in a soup, then you could add in some silken tofu. You can just throw a block in with all your vegetables and blend it together to make a really nice creamy soup.” Choose a stronger cheese and use less of it “Cheese on its own is high in fat, but it is nutritious in other ways. It’s got a little bit of protein and calcium in it, for example. However, if we have too much of it, then we are at risk of eating too many calories, too much saturated fat, and that can be harmful for our cardiovascular system as well,” explains Sanchez. “So, one thing we can do is choose a stronger cheese – such as a really mature cheddar or stilton – and use less of them.” She adds: “Another thing you can do is grate it instead of slicing it to help you reduce how much cheese you are consuming.” If you want to ditch the cheese completely, you could go for a nutritional yeast. “It’s vegan and you could mix it into a macaroni cheese sauce, for example, and will still get a nice cheesy umami flavour. It has much less fat than cheese and also contains lots of B vitamins, some iron and a little bit of protein in it, so it can be a much healthier option,” says Sanchez. Swap sugary hot chocolate powder for plain cocoa powder “Start with the milk that you prefer and then add in plain cocoa rather than shop bought sugary hot chocolate powder,” advises Sanchez. “Cocoa is actually a really healthy food and is really high fibre. “If you do want to add in a bit of a sweeter flavour, you could use an alternative sweetener, such as xylitol. “I would also recommend avoiding putting any cream on top because there’s no good alternatives for that.” Words by Camilla Foster, Press Association Images credit Alamy/PA

But while solar panels are designed to be remarkably lowmaintenance, there’s one important detail that homeowners shouldn’t overlook: they still need looking after.

The biggest bathroom trends to get on board with now From colour to tiles, to baths and handleless vanities, here’s what’s shaping tub time.
With the popularity of hotel-style bathrooms and shift towards creating a spa-like experience at home, the latest bathroom renovations are all about creating a distinct zone and getting the designer look. Indeed, the latest Houzz UK Bathroom Trends Study 2026 reveals how homeowners are investing in practical design with an eye for creativity, and reconfiguring layouts to accommodate a larger space. To give you a heads up ahead of planning your dream bathroom, home and design platform Houzz has shared the key trends shaping bathroom design right now…. Colour is making a statement While people are still choosing a largely neutral scheme for their bathroom walls, they’re becoming much more adventurous, highlights Kiya Kelly-Paine, Houzz home design trends expert. Incorporating greens and blues to create a focal point, such as adding or updating an accent wall, with colour headlining can be the most popular way to make it stand out. This suggests we’re looking for ways to introduce personality without committing to bold colours across the whole room.

Tiles are trending The way we’re decorating with tiles is changing and rectangular tiles have increased in popularity this year, especially for shower walls – while metro tiles have fallen back, notes Kelly-Paine. She says they’re also seeing seeing grid and vertically stacked layouts coming through strongly, with people favouring a clean and contemporary look. “We have definitely seen a shift away from smaller metro tiles to using large format tiles on walls and floors in bathrooms,” says Caroline Nicholls, managing director of Slightly Quirky, an interior design studio that specialises in bespoke interiors and is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. “We like using the really large format tiles, and they’ve become more and more popular because they give really good impact. And because it’s large format, you’ve got really minimal grout lines which adds to the impact, and easy to keep clean.” “I think that’s also really important – we’re quite practical people, and you’ve got to be able to clean it. You don’t want it to look tired after six months. “It’s got to have longevity in looking fabulous and stand the test of time… as well as not just looking great the day it’s finished,” adds Nicholls. Handless vanities keeping things streamlined As Kelly-Paine points out, vanity units do a lot of heavy lifting in the bathroom… providing essential storage while also helping to establish the overall look of the room. “This year, handleless designs are the clear favourite, and we’re seeing contemporary designs in wooden tones, often featuring fluting, coming through in the most popular photos on Houzz.” A B OV E Contemporary bathroom with vertically stacked green tiles and a curved wood vanity | Slightly Quirky/Anna Stathaki Photography/PA

V W T- R O C – POLISHED AND PREMIUM There’s a very generic design trend these days for SUVs, and it’s almost reached the point where if it weren’t for the badge, one would sometimes struggle to identify individual marques. VW is a bit of an exception though in that their distinctive badging and overall packaging sets them a little bit apart and makes them more identifiable. Some vivid colour options also help.

JAGUAR T YPE 01 – NINTH LIFE FOR ICONIC BRITISH MARQUE After an interminable lead-up, Jaguar’s new Type 01 all-electric coupe has finally appeared in production form. A genuine all-or-nothing move meant to signal a new beginning for the legendary British marque. It’s fair to say many are of the view that it could also signal the brand’s demise. target customers, those who would be considering cars from the likes of Bentley and Porsche. Priced from around £130,000 traditional Jaguar buyers from the past are no longer the target customer. Type 01 (Zero one to be correct) is bold, striking and very marmite, which is what Jaguar wanted in order to attract wealthy customers for a true statement car. Other models are apparently in the pipeline from this unique platform, one has to expect some kind of SUV given current trends and possibly a coupe. It’s striking enough to be a success but sales and ultimate reliability will be the final arbiter. I hope it does succeed because the Jaguar marque deserves to survive.

Operation Mincemeat Words by Peter Marks, The Washington Post’s former chief theatre critic Who could have imagined that the most uproarious musical in years would find its zany inspiration from … James Bond? “We just had been devouring every kind of source we could for telling the story of ‘Operation Mincemeat,’” Felix Hagan recalled, and we’d come to this realisation that it chimed every macabre, sick, twisted bell in all our horrible heads.” Hagan is one of the members of SplitLip, the madcap comedy collective that in 2017 came up with a wild premise: turning the tale of an improbably brash British wartime escapade, into an improbably brash British musical. And that what would seal the deal early on was that one of the real-life characters in the tale of this mind-boggling gambit — a major World War II turning point for the Allies — was none other than the authorcreator of Agent 007.

It is the essence of that idea, of gathering round to be regaled by a mesmerising bit of history, that “Operation Mincemeat” bottles so well. And all the more astonishing, because the SplitLip posse had never written a musical before. “A few weeks ago, one of the wardrobe assistants, Billy, said to me, ‘Did you know that “Sail on, Boys” is a ‘charm song’?” said Hodgson, who plays Ewen Montague, the devilishly devious head of the MI5 team. And I was like, ‘What’s a charm song’? He’s like, ‘What do you mean? It’s a type of song in musical theatre.’ I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m being taught musical theatre in my own Broadway show by one of the wardrobe assistants!’ As Roberts noted, the group chose this narratively-rich source material “because we wanted to do something with a bit more commercial appeal” than some of the weirder, cabaret-style work through which SplitLip had gained a cult following. But when it came to writing the score, the focus became on mining various musical genres, from period ballads to contemporary hip-hop, for the humour or pathos the scene required. “We approached every number completely with a clean slate as to what is the correct musical palette for this one song,” said Cumming, who originated the role of

Train strong, feel confident;
Thai Boxing for Mums at Wassmuffin There’s never a wrong time to start something new — and Thai boxing is one of the most powerful ways to build fitness, confidence, and strength. After busy weeks of juggling family life, school runs, and endless to-do lists, many mums reach a point where they’re ready to focus on themselves again — to move, sweat, and feel strong. Starting a new routine is about creating healthy habits that last. Thai boxing delivers a full-body workout that burns calories, builds strength, improves coordination, and boosts energy levels. Just as importantly, it offers huge mental benefits. Hitting pads, learning new skills, and pushing past personal limits helps relieve stress, clear your head, and build confidence.
