The new realism of electric fire There was a time when choosing an electric fire meant accepting

a

compromise.

Convenient,

certainly.

Practical, undoubtedly. But when it came to creating the depth, atmosphere and character of a real fire, expectations were understandably limited. That perception is changing. Today, the latest generation of electric fires is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from the real thing, combining considered interior design with technology that creates a remarkably convincing illusion of flame. At British Fires, that pursuit of realism has shaped the evolution of the New Forest range. Rather than simply recreating the idea of a traditional fireplace, the focus has been on capturing the details that make a fire feel authentic: the depth of the fuel bed, the irregularity of natural materials, the movement of light and flame, and

RE ALIS M IS IN TH E D E TAIL

the way each element interacts within the fireplace. The result is an electric fire designed to make you look twice.

Much of that effect begins with the fuel bed. British Fires’ Deluxe Real Logs are made using English oak, individually cut and arranged by hand to create a naturally irregular composition. No two arrangements are exactly alike, bringing the texture, variation and character of real timber into an otherwise contemporary electric fireplace. Combined with carefully layered lighting and flame effects, those physical materials help blur the distinction between real and electric. It’s an approach that reflects a wider shift in interior design. Technology is increasingly at its best when it disappears into the experience rather than demanding attention for itself. You shouldn’t necessarily notice the technology behind a fire. You should notice how it makes the room feel.

D ESI G N ED ARO U N D TH E RO O M Electric also offers another advantage: freedom. Without the traditional requirements of a chimney or flue, a fireplace can become part of the architecture and interior scheme in ways that would previously have been difficult to achieve. A wide-format fire can form the centrepiece of a media wall. A three-sided installation can create a dramatic architectural feature between spaces. More compact models can introduce the warmth and visual character of a fireplace where the proportions of the room demand something more restrained. The New Forest collection reflects that flexibility, with sizes ranging from compact installations through to expansive statement fires measuring more than two metres wide. The result is less about finding somewhere to accommodate a fireplace and more about designing the fireplace around the space.

Budget-friendly cities in Europe to discover this shoulder season

Autumn is the perfect time of year to explore these affordable destinations. As the crowds return to school and work, autumn is an ideal time to explore some of Europe’s most beautiful cities at a more relaxed pace, without the hustle and bustle of peak season. September and October are often considered the ‘shoulder season’ for travel, when visitor numbers tend to fall and travellers can find some great deals during this quieter period. “The prices of flights and hotels can drop quite significantly this time of year,” says Laura Carden-Lovell, travel expert and head of operations at travel resale marketplace Transfer Travel. However, she encourages off-peak travellers to also factor in additional costs that can quickly mount up. “It’s important to also think about transportation within the city you want to visit and to find out how much this might cost,” recommends Carden-Lovell. “Walkable cities are great if you planning on going on a quick city break, as you will be able to see a lot of places for free on foot.

Tirana in Albania “Tirana in Albania is bright, colourful, and is full of history,” says Carden-Lovell. “Albania is one of the largest, fastest-growing tourism market in Europe, so its capital Tirana has become increasingly popular.” The city encompasses many distinct and interesting areas to explore that blend a vibrant modern culture with a unique communist and Ottoman history. “I would recommend starting exploring at Skanderbeg Square [the main plaza in the centre of Tirana], which costs nothing to explore,” advises Carden-Lovell. “Then head into Blloku, a lively neighbourhood where you can go café hopping.” To get the best picturesque views of Tirana, hop on the Dajti Ekspres, a cable car that takes you directly from the edge of Tirana up to the edge of Dajti Mountain National Park.

“It’s the longest leisure cable car in Balkans and costs around £15 for a return trip,” says Carden-Lovell. “The national park itself is also completely free to explore.” You can get flights to Tirana for incredible prices. For example, Wizz Air offers return flights from London Gatwick and London Luton to Tirana from around £34. Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina “Sarajevo is something a little bit different and is a great affordable option for an autumnal city break,” says Carden-Lovell. It’s also regarded as an incredibly good city for mooching. “In the Old Town there are lots of traditional market stalls, lots of local crafts, some really good food shops and some historic mosques to look around,” says Carden-Lovell.

Tallinn in Estonia “I’d also recommend visiting Tallinn in Estonia – this one is really popular on TikTok,” says Carden-Lovell. “Stay in the heart of the old town, which is UNESCO listed. It has wonderful fairytale streets and colourful buildings.” After you’ve wandered around the charming old town, check out Telliskivi Creative City, the creative hotspot of Tallinn. “It’s a bit more modern than the old town and there are lots of independent cafes, local artists, street art and bars to explore here,” says Carden-Lovell. She also suggests relaxing in one of the city’s public saunas. “Saunas are a big part of the culture in Estonia, so I definitely recommend going to a sauna somewhere, especially in the colder shoulder season,” recommends Carden-Lovell. Dorset landlords: Your next renters’ rights act deadline has been confirmed The Renters’ Rights Act is continuing to roll out – and Dorset landlords have another important date to put in their diaries.

The first major phase of the Renters’ Rights Act came into force on 1 May 2026, bringing significant changes to the way private rented properties are let and managed. Now, attention is turning to the next stage: the Government’s new “Register your rental property” service. For landlords in Dorset, the registration window has been confirmed.

The art of mastering autumnal tones in the home A palette of oranges, greens, rich browns and earthy hues is perfect for the mellow season, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

With warm, dappled sunlight, the beautiful golden glow autumn gifts us, and trees shedding their leaves, chances are you’re ready for a reshuffle with your interiors – to mimick the great outdoors. “What we’re seeing is a real shift to those natural, earthy tones… so the mossy greens, earthy taupes, espresso browns and rusty oranges,” highlights Jade Denham, chief digital officer at Poltronesofà, where her role puts her at the centre of identifying emerging interior trends. “Alongside natural-feeling textures – woven fabrics, bouclés, warm leathers, soft velvets and natural woods.” Moreover, she says earthy taupes have almost become the new grey. “The cold, flat greys, we’re definitely seeing those taper off, and I think the shift in colour feels more connected with the mood.” “The natural response to the seasonal shift, where we’re seeing the changes in light, the sunrise and sunset for the warmth, the autumn leaves, everything you see on your walks… bringing that into the home. So the biophilic interior design approach, which allows us to connect with nature by bringing the feeling of the outdoors in.” So, thoughts are turning to how to style this season’s colour palette through your choice of furnishings and accessories.

Is it time for an autumn health MOT? Dr Selina Gray, GP with a specialist interest in Lifestyle Medicine and Women’s Health at Dr Helen Medical in Ringwood, shares six simple ways to check in with your health this autumn.

Preventative healthcare is not about looking for problems or making healthy people anxious. It is about understanding what is going on in your body now and spotting small changes before they become bigger ones. Autumn is actually a great time to do this. The holidays are over, routines have returned and, before we know it, Christmas will be here. I often encourage patients to use this time of year for a simple health MOT. 1. Let’s give Bournemouth something to be proud of for the next 150 years One of Bournemouth’s most recognisable historic buildings has been left empty and derelict for years. Now renowned father-and-son building duo Steve and Bradley Bonner want to see the former Odeon Cinema on Westover Road given a new lease of life — not simply as another residential development, but as a destination that could bring people, culture, entertainment and visitors back into the heart of the town. With a history that includes performances by The Beatles, The Kinks and Rolling Stones to name a few, Steve and Bradley believe the building has an opportunity to become something that belongs to everyone. We caught up with them to find out what they have in mind. Why has the former Odeon Cinema captured your imagination? We think it is one of the most incredible buildings in Bournemouth and, for us, it is sitting right in the centre of everything. It is beautiful. It has an amazing history and it is one of the few buildings in the town where you can genuinely say, “If those walls could talk, what stories would they tell?” The Beatles, The Kinks and The Rolling Stone have played here, and generations of people have memories of going to that cinema. It is part of the heritage of Bournemouth. But we don’t want us to spend all our time looking backwards. The building already has its history. What we want to do is give it a future. You mentioned wanting it to stand for the next 150 years. What do you mean by that? We don’t want this to be a short-term investment. We want to see something built with passion for Bournemouth and with an eye on the future. If we’re going to take on a building of this size and importance, let’s do something properly. Let’s create something that can still be here, still be relevant and still be enjoyed by people 150 years from now. That’s the ambition. What are you looking for to make that happen? We’re the builders. That’s what we do. What we’re looking for now is someone with the same passion for the town, and someone with an eye for the future who can help us put the whole thing together. It needs investment, ideas, imagination and people who genuinely care about Bournemouth. We don’t pretend that we can do everything. This needs collaboration. You’re talking about creating something for everyone rather than one particular use?

community can enjoy. It could be something for families, young people, older people, tourists, football supporters, local businesses and visitors. That’s what makes a building like this exciting. We don’t want to create something that people walk past and say, “That’s nice.” We want people to walk past and say, “What’s going on in there tonight?” That’s the difference. How important is the building’s history in all of this? The history is incredibly important, but we don’t want to turn it into a museum. The building has already achieved something. It’s survived all these years. It has been a cinema, it’s hosted incredible performances and famous visitors have walked through its doors. But we can’t go back. We can only go forward. So let’s respect the history, celebrate it and make it part of the story — but let’s also create a new story. We’d love somebody to walk into that building 50 or 100 years from now and say, “Can you believe what happened here?” That’s what we’re interested in.

How to do a luxury break in the dogfriendly Lake District Lisa Salmon stays at a four-star, dog-friendly hotel in the Lakes with her border collie pup. When you’re a dog owner, getting away for a sneaky break can be a real headache – what do you do with the dog? If you’re not lucky enough to have friends or family to look after your precious pooch and you don’t like the idea of kennels, being a dog parent could scupper your holiday plans – unless, of course, you take the dog with you. That’s not always easy, particularly in luxury hotels where the possibility of barking, muddy paw prints and

break with your furry friend can be a real treat for both humans and canines. One such hotel is the four-star Armathwaite Hall Hotel and Spa, nestled in 400 glorious acres of private woodland and deer park on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, near Keswick in the Lake District. The imposing Hall is everything you expect from a historic stately home, boasting manicured gardens and lawns leading to woodland running down to the shores of the fourth biggest lake in the Lake District – and the only one actually called a lake, rather than mere or water – the peaceful Bassenthwaite Lake. Although there’s been a house on the site since the 11th century, the first reliable records are from 1548, and the current structure was built in 1880. It boasts rich woodpanelled rooms adorned with portraits of stern-looking gentlemen, with huge picture windows looking over the gardens and lake.

But despite the grandeur, you’re allowed to bring wellbehaved dogs to stay with you – and your furry friends get their own taste of luxury too. With the hotel’s two-night Paws and Retreat package, dogs get their own plush bed to sleep in, plus a gift pack containing treats and waste bags, as well as a bowl. My husband and I arrive at the hotel with our dog Otto along with a degree of trepidation because he’s a sixmonth-old border collie – a breed not known for their chilled demeanour. But we keep our fingers crossed that Otto’s going to be on his best behaviour. Many of the dog-friendly rooms are beautiful Garden Suites, and when we arrive it’s raining outside and there’s a snow-white duvet cover on our bed – a recipe for muddy paw print disaster. By some miracle Otto doesn’t get any paw prints on the bed – the hotel “kindly ask that dogs are not left unattended for long periods of time in hotel bedrooms”, so when he’s alone in our suite, we make sure he’s so exhausted that there’s no jumping on the bed.

So instead, Otto comes joins us at the vibrant Keswick market, about a 15-minute drive from the Hall. It turns out many other market-goers bring their dogs with them too, making it a sort of canine meet-and-greet. The market, on every Thursday and Saturday, is packed with local produce and crafts, and there are plenty of cute little cafes dotted around too, so we enjoy a delicious cream tea sitting outside with Otto, before leaving with a bag full of market goodies, including home-made orange cheese, and chuckleberry jam, and some farm-produced meaty treats for Otto. But the break isn’t all about the dog, and because he’s shattered after all his outdoor adventures, we leave him sleeping in our room while we relax in the hotel spa, a multi-million pound development which makes the Hall the only spa destination in the Lake District. There’s an array of spa facilities including indoor and outdoor infinity pools, saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs. I treat myself to the ultimate in pampering, an hour-long facial.

We dine in the hotel conservatory on the first night, as we’re allowed to take Otto with us in there, feasting on steak and broad bean and pea risotto from the hotel’s Dining Room restaurant. The dog isn’t left out though – the waiter brings him a bowl of water and Otto quietly munches on one of his market chews. Dogs are also allowed in the Hall Lounge during the day, but not in the hotel’s newly opened Zaika restaurant. Here, tasty Indian dishes are served in an incongruously English opulent burgundy room, and we follow the meal with a late-night walk round the grounds with Otto. We only see one other dog at the hotel during our stay, next door, and didn’t even hear barking. My nervousness about taking Otto to such a grand place proved unfounded – he damaged nothing and disturbed no one, and after all that fresh air and Cumbrian walks, is a very happy (and exhausted) puppy. REVIEW | MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL

Welcome to the Moulin Rouge! Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Mayflower Theatre Southampton, 30 September – 24 October 2026

The scene is set the moment we walk into the theatre, subtly captivating our attention with the stage drenched in red and performers hypnotising us with their seductive, purposeful moves. The atmosphere gradually builds and feels electric even before the main show begins. There is pure magic in the powerful moment when the intro music stops and the audience collectively holds its breath, waiting for those first words to release us from the spell. Then, all at once, we are thrown into a beautifully chaotic world of swirling costumes, bold, elaborate dance moves and wonderfully familiar lyrics.

MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL | REVIEW

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a revelation. Adapted from Baz Luhrmann’s revolutionary 2001 film, it delivers

everything

audiences

loved

about

the

original – forbidden love, all-consuming jealousy and inevitable tragedy – brought to life before your eyes with a tantalising excess of glitz and grandeur, elevating the story to a whole new level and creating a theatrical masterpiece. Set in the dazzling world of 19th-century Paris, Moulin Rouge! The Musical tells the story of Christian, a young writer who falls hopelessly in love with Satine, the glamorous star of the famous Moulin Rouge nightclub. Their passionate romance unfolds against a backdrop of spectacular performances, jealousy and ambition, as Satine is torn between following her heart and securing the future of the struggling club. The soundtrack is a lavish celebration of iconic hits spanning the decades, from beautiful, heartfelt solos to mind-blowing, inspired mash-ups. It retains the much-loved songs from the original film, whilst infusing them with more contemporary anthems from the likes of Pink, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, breathing new life into the soundtrack.

Nate Landskroner played the hopeless romantic Christian with what felt like effortless charm, creating an endearing character full of warmth and charisma. With his dulcet tones, we were pulled into his story, feeling the passion of his love and, for a moment, believing that maybe love really is all you need! Verity Thompson dazzled us, both figuratively and literally, from the moment she floated onto the stage as Satine, and never faltered throughout. Her voice soared through the theatre, each beautiful note washing over the audience and leaving absolutely no doubt as to the scale of her talent.

Every member of the ensemble deserves individual praise. The way they threw themselves wholeheartedly into each number showcased incredible technical skill, while their collective performance was nothing short of exhilarating, bringing every inch of the stage to life in a whirlwind of colour, movement and high kicks. Alongside them, the band provided the glue that held the whole production together, delivering a seemingly effortless blend of note-perfect music that drove the story from beginning to end. For a night of pure escapism, enter the world of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, currently showing at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, until 24 October. Lose yourself in this story of love, sacrifice and chasing your dreams. Come to the stars with me; allow yourself to laugh, cry, feel your heart soar, then break, because the beautifully seductive world of the Moulin Rouge is not one to be missed — come what may! www.mayflower.org.uk Words by Vicky Anscombe

How to work the nocturnal niche trend and create a cosy, cocoon space Autumn is all about an atmospheric interior, tactile textures and layered lighting with longer nights, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

Much like fashion and expressing yourself with accessories and signature pieces, autumn is the perfect time to show your true colours through interiors, especially when you want a cosy aesthetic. “What a lot people forget is fashion leads interiors. It’s a fact… always has done, always will do. And what goes around with the timelines, how we wear our wardrobe, wanting cosy wear, our cashmeres, our lovely big cardigans, and they’re oversized – we think of interiors exactly the same,” highlights Nicky Emlick, creative director for Sofa.com, and founder of NM Design, a luxury interior, architecture and design studio. And with this, the desire to create cocoon-like spaces, which feel especially inviting in the evening; a shift towards deeper tones, interiors which feel layered, ambient lighting and decor which welcomes you with open arms. “The nocturnal niche trend is kind of my style in general, it always has been. I lean into this trend, and have done for many years because it suits my nature,” says Emlick, with a background in interiors spanning 30 years, both at home and internationally. “I feel living in the UK, we have so many dark months a year we want that cosiness… come autumn, don’t we all just want to get our boots back on?”

“We’ve had the most amazing summer, but we all yearn for the boots and sweaters because we like that feeling of the build-up to bonfire night, to Christmas, and it’s kind of what our country is all about. “So it’s a trend [nocturnal] that really suits every furniture brand in the industry in the UK.” But she says what we also have to remember with this trend, “for us as a design team in a furniture brand, it’s about choosing the right fabrics. “So really leaning into the possibilities with the right colour pantones… the nice espresso chocolates, the really nice dark olive greens, the ink blues, the aubergines, the deep reds.” “All these sexy autumnal shades that really tantalise that kind of synergy into it being those darker months, but warmer homes, so that cosy impact. “And with furniture, that’s something that’s always on our mind… comfort, cosy, how long is someone going to spend their time on that sofa; on that dining chair, occasional chair, in their bed.” Indeed, she says all these kind of things come to the forefront of their mind when you’re spending a considered

missing out on some of the harder fabrics and materials. “The smoky glass, the tantalising, beautiful, deepveined toned marble finishes.” She continues: “Daring to be a little bit different with some of these nice surfaces that really bring some of these materials, wools and felts, to the forefront.” It’s moving away from the linens, the cooler aspects and embracing those warm, opulent, really cosy feelings, highlights the designer, who describes her style as “eclectic.”

“And I think design in general, what we should look at with nocturnal niche is to never lose sight that to get the depth of a dark room, we really need to enhance it by having some light in there as well.” The best laid dark room we’ll ever see has got a good 10 to 20% of a nice caramel, or soft creams in there suggests Emlick, “so it kind of enlightens you more to the darker space.” “It brings it out a little bit more. And the best analogy I can give is, we don’t want to take the daylight out of our lounges because we still need that… for our wellbeing and our health. But if we do it very cleverly, if it’s a window-facing wall, with that I would try and put some sort of light reflective material on there, even if it’s a smoked mirror. “Or even if you want to keep those dark elements, but add some sort of a surface that’s going to have light reflective balance to it, that helps. “But anchoring a cream wall against everything else that’s really, really dark and moody, quite colourful, it can look fantastic – and work really well on the eye.” Layered lighting can also help get the look, improve how you feel and create the ambience, with Emlick suggesting we shouldn’t just rely on LED lights. With shorter days and longer nights, she says “it’s really nice to go back to old-fashioned bulbs in a lamp. You don’t have to change all your LEDs, but to have a couple of nice lamps or some nice kinetic candle light in the room.

“Again, you’re just creating that gorgeous, sumptuous nocturnal niche feeling and encapsulating it. It’s an emotion. It’s part of our senses.” “You walk into a room.. it’s your sense of smell, sense of ambiance, it’s the mood that it brings together. “And I think that’s what this trend is really talking about. How we move from this very warm summer into this lovely nocturnal niche autumnal feel,” underlines Emlick. To nail the look with the finer details, the designer says “layering, layering, layering… more is more,” and it’s good to have a few extra things in your room to give it some dimension. She says some nice old books, for example, is always a really quick win; scented candles, beautiful, thick, voluptuous kind of textures – ones that give you the feeling you can sit down on the floor; or cosy up in the

carpeting, and lovely canvases on walls to absorb some of the echo in the space cements that feeling as well, suggests Emlick. “So rich velvets, integrating wool throws, cushions with different size variations, something unique… some can be more velvety to match in with the sofa, sheepskins and things like that. “You can have a really dark, moody espresso sofa, but then bring in a couple of nice, warm, biscuity-coloured sheepskin smaller cushions or larger pieces, and it really brings it out in a different way.” “A quiet luxury of opulence, but it’s not shouty,” highlights Emlick. “It’s got an eclectic mood to it… something old, something new, warm, cosy, exciting.” Words by Sam Wylie-Harris, PA

The World’s 50 Best Hotels have been announced – here are the top 10 From Hong Kong and Bangkok to the shores of Italian lakes, these properties took the coveted top spots.

The World’s 50 Best Hotels have been announced for 2026 at a prestigious awards ceremony in Paris – and the top spot has been clinched by an ultra-luxury hotel in Hong Kong, for the second year running. Europe was well represented though, with 21 of the top 50 hotels are in the continent. Italy and France both have six properties featured, and the UK is home to four. Here are the top 10 – all five-stars, naturally. 1. ROSEWOOD, HONG KONG The

harbour waterfront in Kowloon, Hong Kong, has taken the top stop once again. It’s the service that’s said to stand out here and the infinity pool overlooking the city’s most famous spot. There are 11 restaurants and bars, including two Michelin-star restaurants – the Legacy House and Chaat – and a sophisticated speakeasy DarkSide. For ultimate luxury, two private lodges sit apart from the main building on a sun terrace, which each have their own spa chamber and ‘sleep-enhancing technology’.

2. CAPELLA BANGKOK, THAILAND The Thai capital has a strong showing on this year’s list, at both second and third spots. Capella Bangkok was ranked first in 2024 and third in 2025 so clearly it isn’t going anywhere. This low-rise retreat is close to the Chao Phraya River and features private plunge pools and waterside villas. It may have some of the priciest rooms in the city, but it’s ultra-sleek, is home to famous chef Mauro Colagreco’s restaurant and every room comes with a huge spa-like bathroom. Set in one of Bangkok’s oldest districts, it’s a in prime position for exploring.

4. ATLANTIS THE ROYAL, DUBAI On the oceanfront of the crescent of Palm Jumeirah, the 43-storey Atlantis The Royal opened in 2023 (Beyonce performed at the launch) and epitomises Dubai’s grandeur and glamour. It isn’t understated in any sense of the word – there are nearly 800 rooms, 17 restaurants and a 32,300 sq ft spa. One of its many swimming pools sits on top of the skybridge, bars and restaurants include Nobu by the Beach and Resonance by Heston Blumenthal and the service is reported to be exceptional. 5. PASSALACQUA, LAKE COMO Nothing says traditional high end than a historic hotel on the shores of Italy’s most famous lake. Unlike every hotel above it in the World’s 50 Best Hotels, Passalacqua dates back many years – to the 18th century in fact. For true la dolce vita, with more than a touch of exclusivity, the hotel offers just 24 rooms in a highly coveted location on the south end of the water. Steeped in character and tasteful elegance without being showy or gaudy, there is an indoor and outdoor pool and perfectly manicured gardens to stroll through.

6. ROSEWOOD, SÃO PAULO Another Rosewood hotel made the top 10, this time in Brazil, after jumping from No 24 in 2025. The largest urban area by population outside of Asia and the most populous city in Brazil, São Paulo is vast, but it has a growing luxury hotel scene. This is Rosewood’s first property in South America and it oozes cool glamour, apparently nearly 100 creatives were brought in to help put in the artworks and finishing touches to the striking design. The interior was once a maternity ward, now it’s a sleek space of white and bright colour, the main pool has mosaic floors, and the top service comes with a WhatsApp number to make your requests through.

and totally in keeping with local style – renovated siheyuan (courtyard houses) set among authentic hutongs – traditional alleyways that make up so much of Beijing. Each bedroom even has its own private courtyard and some include private tea rooms. The location makes it feel fully immersed in the real Beijing and it’s within close reach of the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven Park. 8. UPPER HOUSE HONG KONG On Hong Kong Island overlooking Victoria Harbour (where else), Upper House Hong Kong is a boutique hotel with high-rise views. The look was created by one of Asia’s biggest designers and architect Andre Fu – think minimalist with natural materials like limestone, bamboo and woollens in the bedrooms – which also have walk-in wardrobes and giant bathtubs. And of course, the views are spectacular.

MANDARIN ORIENTAL BANGKOK A second Mandarin Oriental, this time in the Thai capital, but in a completely different style to the first. Dating back to 1876, the property was reimagined with opulent Italian design. The suites channel a single colour palette so each feels unique or their most exclusive suite, the Oriental, has a 700-square foot private terrace with a full kitchen and dining room, and a visit to the spa includes a soothing boat ride across the river. Tai chi walking: What does it involve and what are the benefits? Can this slow, mindful workout actually deliver big results?

With the demands of everyday life, many of us are looking for simple ways to incorporate movement and mindfulness into our busy routines – and tai chi ticks both of these boxes. You may have passed a group practising its slow, deliberate movements in your local park, or heard a friend or relative mention it, but is tai chi walking something anyone can try? We spoke to Rebecca Bossick, physiotherapist, cofounder and clinical director at One Body LDN, to find out what tai chi walking actually involves as well as its most significant health benefits. WHAT IS TAI CHI WALKING – AND HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM NORMAL WALKING? “Tai chi is a type of exercise and practice which is very slow and is all about flow,” says Bossick. “While regular walking relies on momentum, stepping one foot forward with weight and balancing our bodies as the other foot moves ahead, tai chi walking uses a different, more mindful principle. “Instead of the usual movement, you consciously concentrate your entire body weight onto one leg and establish good balance before you even lift the other foot. In tai chi terms, one leg becomes “full” and the other “empty”, and the whole point is that you don’t move on until that transfer is complete.

Kitchen zones that every home should have

From storage to cooking and entertaining, kitchens aren’t just about decorative aesthetics. Searching for a new kitchen, thinking about which trend to follow and the decorative elements for your new showpiece? Before you contemplate how your kitchen is going convey style and good looks, it’s important to figure out how it’s going to be functional besides fashionable. “People get carried away either with Instagram or seeing the way someone else’s kitchen looks and say, ‘Oh my God, I just want that fridge,’ or ‘Oh my God, I love that layout. But really, what you’ve got to think about is: Is that going to work for me? Is that going to work for me in my lifestyle? In my space? In my style of home?” highlights Looeeze Grossman, founder of The Used Kitchen Company. Kitchens have changed enormously and so has the way we use them. As Grossman points out, kitchens aren’t just about design and layout – they’re about creating a kitchen that works for you and your family.

RIGHT A large, double door fridge with a pull out freezer is a win-win for busy households | Alamy/PA

K I TC H E N ZO N E S | I N T E R I O R S

“For years, the working triangle was the golden rule of kitchen design – the relationship between the sink, the fridge, and the cooker,” explains Grossman. “It’s still important, but people are using their kitchens differently now. It’s more a sort of a hub. People don’t use their dining room anymore. A lot of people have open-plan living. Their kids aren’t necessarily doing their homework in their bedrooms… they might be sitting at the kitchen table.” “People are working from home. So the kitchen’s being used much more as a hub of the home than it ever used to be,” underlines the kitchen sustainability expert, who’s been specialising in used and ex-display kitchens for more than 20 years. Here, she advises on the three zones every kitchen should have and why…

BELOW A kitchen with open shelving which means everything is within

sight, and easy reach | Alamy/PA

Grossman says storage is one of the easiest things to underestimate when planning your kitchen, and to start by thinking about what you actually need to store; rather than simply how many cupboards you can fit in. If you like things tidy, Grossman suggests tambour units – “You’ve got a run of base units, and then a shutter that comes down, and you can hide all sorts of things behind it. “And some people like pocket doors [sliding doors which disappear into the wall], and they hide all their toasters and things behind there. There’s a lot of hiding being done these days,” she quips. “Whereas I have pocket doors, and I don’t think I’ve actually closed them since the day I got my kitchen because I quite like having cookbooks and the toaster on show,” reveals Grossman. Alternatively, she says an open-shelf zone gives you the best of both worlds – somewhere to display the things you love while keeping everything else tucked away.

I N T E R I O R S | K I TC H E N ZO N E S

And then there’s the fridge. “Things like a Fisher & Paykel double door fridge is one of the most popular [freestanding American style]. “It’s double the width, or at least 90 centimetres anyway, and it’s got double doors on the top; then it’s got a huge pull-out freezer on the bottom – huge larder fridges have definitely become much more popular.” So think about how you’re going to use your kitchen and whether you want the fridge hidden away behind an integrated door; or as a feature in its own right. Moreover, she says if you’re a keen chef, having your fridge on show and easily accessible is often the preferred option. But if you’re less likely to cook and want your kitchen to be more of a showpiece, then Grossman suggests an integrated one may be a better choice.

“Not just a little bit of worktop between the sink and the hob, but enough space to spread out, unpack the shopping, chop vegetables, roll pastry or prep your dinner before it goes into the oven.” And while kitchen islands are very trendy and brilliant for this if you have a large-enough area, she says a wellplanned run of worktop can work just as well. Especially if you envisage walking into a kitchen – the last thing you want to see is a pile of dirty plates next to the sink on a kitchen island. “Maybe it’s for people who aren’t messy, or who don’t do washing-up. I’m super messy, and being able to have my sink behind me is far more advantageous,” says Grossman. Eating, entertaining and gathering As Grossman puts it: “Kitchens are the heart of the home – it’s where where everyone congregates, from sitting round the island to doing homework, to having breakfast together or drinks in the evening. “I love it when we’ve got guests and the kids come in, and I’m standing there prepping at the island, and it’s Prepping and cooking

like a gathering space.

“People get carried away with ‘I love the idea of having a run of tall units along the back, with my cooker, the cupboards and the pantry; and then I’ll have a [kitchen] island with a hob and a sink. “But what they’re not thinking is, by doing that, they really don’t have a lot of worktop space… however big their kitchen. “So one of the things I did in our kitchen when we designed it, I had the tall units, but I had three tall units on either side, and then in the middle I had a base unit run with the sink and worktop.” “Straight away, not only have I got a bit of extra worktop there, but I’ve also freed up the workspace, and the island where I would have had to have my sink as well,” highlights Grossman. So really take the time to think about what you do dayto-day and how that space will hold up, she advises. As Grossman points out, you need somewhere to actually do things.

Made for your home, made for you Discover how beautifully designed bespoke furniture can transform the way you live

As the evenings draw in and we naturally begin spending more time at home, autumn has a habit of making us look at our interiors with fresh eyes. That cluttered corner suddenly seems a little more noticeable, the overflowing wardrobe feels even less practical and the home office that was supposed to be temporary may be long overdue an upgrade.

Family-run and based in Verwood, Dorset, Custom Creations has more than 40 years of experience creating bespoke fitted furniture. From fitted, sliding and walk-in wardrobes to home offices, media walls, under-stair storage and cabinetry, every project begins with the space itself. Ways to work this season’s burgundy trend into your decor

01

Red, red wine… the deep berry colour chart is everywhere, says Sam Wylie-Harris. Cited as autumn’s favourite colour by tastemakers, fashionistas and designers, rich berry hues are setting the tone for the switch in season. In the midst of a major resurgence, not since the early Eighties has burgundy been such a big hit. Following on from last year’s autumn/winter collections where merlot was the fashion forecast, interior designers are revisiting these deep red hues and finding inspiration for a wealth of homewares and furnishings in the latest collections. With the potential for colour drenching, being a central feature, or decorative accent, burgundy, merlot and bordeaux are stirring our senses – and tantalising the taste buds as much as the wines themselves. Here are some favourite finds to update your space… 01. Allied to good levels of standard equipment the lead-in Air model appears to offer the best value in the line-up. It’s a mix of that standard equipment level, decent range and a practicality worthy of a much larger vehicle.

As with every Chinese brand I’ve driven the driver assistance (annoyance) features are far too interventionist. Another irksome feature, to all modern cars irrespective of origin, is the lack of physical buttons. The gear shift lever being on the steering column might seem odd but familiarity soon waves away any worries on that score. A high centre console hides the USB ports underneath it which can be a bit fiddly for access, but that apart the interior is a very nice place. If you’re not one who needs an exciting car to get your motoring pulse racing, but want practicality, comfort, lots of toys, economy of running costs and the lack of worry a new car brings then you’d be hard pressed to beat the EX5.

O’Toole notes a common mistake is people throwing portions of their leftover dinner in the freezer and calling it a day, when “sometimes those dishes just aren’t going to work out”. She adds: “How do I say this politely? It’s not worth throwing half-eaten food in the freezer. It isn’t going to last as well as a recipe that has been designed to be put into the freezer.” And don’t worry: this is still the High Priestess of the Potato we’re talking about, so there’s a whole chapter dedicated to freezing the humble spud. “So being able to have stuff in the fridge

Train strong, feel confident;

Thai Boxing for Mums at Wassmuffin There’s never a wrong time to start something new — and Thai boxing is one of the most powerful ways to build fitness, confidence, and strength. After busy weeks of juggling family life, school runs, and endless to-do lists, many mums reach a point where they’re ready to focus on themselves again — to move, sweat, and feel strong. Starting a new routine is about creating healthy habits that last. Thai boxing delivers a full-body workout that burns calories, builds strength, improves coordination, and boosts energy levels. Just as importantly, it offers huge mental benefits. Hitting pads, learning new skills, and pushing past personal limits helps relieve stress, clear your head, and build confidence.

Rufus Hound: Once I was in theatre, I just held on for dear life The Other Side of Murder, Mayflower Studios, 16 - 21 November

Boasting a triple threat career in acting, comedy and TV presenting, Hound reflects on how theatre has always been his true calling - and how his latest role incorporates his comedic talents. Rufus Hound has successfully forged careers in both stand-up comedy and TV presenting, but theatre has always been his first and biggest love. After leaving a job in PR in 2000 to become a comedian, he later went into television, hosting shows including Top of the Pops and the BBC’s coverage of Glastonbury, and appearing as a panellist on the likes of ITV2’s Celebrity Juice. This caught the attention of the theatre world, and in 2012 he was invited to make his stage debut in a production at London’s Soho Theatre. “That opened the door to being in theatre, which had been the dream ever since I was a kid,” says Hound. “Once I was in theatre, I just held on for dear life.” He hasn’t looked back since, appearing in shows including One Man Two Guvnors at the National Theatre, in the West End and on tour, and Wind in the Willows at the London Palladium and on tour. Hound’s latest role, in Torben Betts’ new comic thriller, The Other Side of Murder, calls upon both his comedy and acting skills. “Lots of people talk about dramatic tension, but there’s such a thing as comedic tension. And actually, what you learn is, it’s tension,” Hound says.

O CTO B E R 2 6

124

T H E OT H E R S I D E O F M U R D E R | W H AT ’ S O N

He argues that “if you can maintain the comedic tension of a farce, you can also understand that it’s tension that you have to maintain for the mystery to work”. Starring in the production alongside national treasure Susie Blake and Carla Mendonça, Hound plays the role of Peter, a TV medium who uses the stage name Darius Divine. Directed by Philip Franks, The Other Side of Murder revolves around a family dinner planned by Peter, which throws up more than one surprise. Without realising it, Hound had already begun his research for the role before he even knew that he was doing the play. “You’re watching a man who has made a living as a spirit medium. I did a play earlier this year where I was explaining that my grandad was an amateur at doing that kind of thing, and, when he died, I ended up with his stuff. So I’d done some investigation into, well, what was he doing? What was his act?,” Hound says. He describes the parallel between the two productions as “weird or wonderful”.

The play, which follows two other hits by writer Betts; Murder at Midnight and Murder in the Dark, is on a major UK tour until March 2027. Presented by Original Theatre in association with Theatre Clwyd, the production will play at Mayflower Studios, Southampton from the 16 - 21 November 2026. While Hound is now hugely successful in theatre, and also has TV credits as an actor including Doctor Who, Cucumber and Zapped, it was a long journey to where he is now. “When I was like three or four, I used to watch The Muppet Show on video over and over again, and got the idea of ‘oh, theatre is a place where weirdos all get together and put on a show and people love them for it’,” Hound recalls. “So, all of my young life, all I wanted to do was be a theatre actor.” At school, Hound says he was taken under the wing of a drama teacher who organised for him to remain there on a scholarship at a time when he most needed it, and introduced him to playwrights including Willy Russell, John Godber, Jim Cartwright and William Shakespeare.
