bright future AS I SIT WRITING THIS LETTER at the end of May, it finally feels like we are turning the corner with the coronavirus. Vaccination numbers are going up daily, and case numbers are going down. People are starting to gather again, seeing family and friends in person for the first time in more than a year. Life is starting to feel normal again. That return to normalcy has brought with it a renewed excitement for the summer wedding season ahead, and we have channeled that joy in the pages of this issue. From bold, bright wedding cakes in every color of the rainbow (page 37) to our lush, romantic cover story inspired by everyone’s favorite Netflix guilty pleasure (page 46), each page is filled with celebratory optimism. While we’re looking forward to all that the covid-free future holds, we’re also taking time to celebrate the ingenuity and innovation that occurred within the wedding industry last year. Wedding photographer Abby Rosenbaum and her business partner, architect Lisa Sauve, launched StudioStudio, a unique creative space in Ann

Arbor that has hosted everything from photo shoots to pop-up elopements (page 11). A little further west, The Collins Off Main, a chic new venue complete with a botanical champagne wall, opened its doors in downtown Chelsea (page 28). Tiffany Harold officially established her bespoke calligraphy and stationery studio, The Ambrosia Rabbit (page 24), and Elyse Finnegan and Nicole Jaber launched Smash Cakes Detroit, our favorite new way to ask your besties to be your bridesmaids (page 20). All of these entrepreneurs took a leap of faith in 2020, and their creativity is worth applauding. I would also like to take this chance to applaud all the couples who wed in the last year. Whether it was a Zoom wedding like Jacob Lewkow and Lucas Aguera’s (page 32) or a fashion forward fete for 10 like Angela Wisniewski-Cobbina and Awenate Cobbina’s (page 70), celebrations of love were a bright light in an uncertain year. Cheers to the future,

studiostudio “I HAVE BEEN LONGING for a space like this in Ann Arbor for as long as I have been a photographer,” says Abby Rosenbaum, co-owner of StudioStudio, a flexible creative venue in Ann Arbor. Launched in the midst of the pandemic, “our timing was not ideal,” says Rosenbaum, who has been a photographer for more than 15 years. “To launch a co-shared creative space that really focuses on gathering was pretty scary to do in 2020, but it’s been awesome. There are months that we are booked literally every single day.” With bright white walls, factory windows that flood the space with light,

12

012-13_DetailsWedcetra_MDW_SF2021.indd 12

cool concrete floors, a roll-up garage door, and an inspiring industrial feel, the possibilities are abounding. “I just really saw a need for a space like this for creatives. My partner, Lisa Sauve, who is an architect, and I had been talking about this for years. When this space became available, we just decided to go for it,” Rosenbaum says. Divided into three areas, the studio boasts a 1,000 square-foot main space, an approximately 400 square-foot space originally intended as a co-working lounge prior to the pandemic, and lastly a chic yet entirely functional kitchenette — complete with a high-shine black Smeg refrigerator. “We do a lot of photo shoots, we’ve hosted pop-up markets, art shows, and small weddings,” Rosenbaum says. Brides have also booked the space just to do their hair and makeup for their wedding day. For couples planning micro weddings, the space allows for any vision to come to fruition. There are sawhorse tables, lots of chairs, and plenty of gorgeous props and furniture that can be used by anyone who rents the studio, whether it’s an event or a photo shoot. This past October, StudioStudio even hosted pop-up elopements. In collaboration with the annual Reincarnate, a botanical gallery that sees more than 20 florists come together in an immersive floral exhibition, the event turned StudioStudio into a “floral wonderland.” It was a stunning setting for elopements. “The space has opened up a whole new world. There is just so much talent in this area. It’s really amazing,” Rosenbaum says. “Just getting to see all the different people who come through and see the space through their eyes and everyone’s different vision and how photographers utilize the sets. It’s really been awesome.” For more information, visit studiostudioa2.com.

This past November, RA+AR Design Co., a full-service, inclusive event curation company founded by Ryan Abney of Ryan Abney Event Design and Amanda Rose of ArcDesign Studios, launched an innovative new event experience — Detroit Social: Box Collective. The boxes are typically related to an upcoming holiday, but you’ll also discover date night boxes, self-care boxes, wedding party boxes, and slumber party boxes. “These boxes are an exciting and unique way to host,” Abney says. “We’re giving you not only the tools and products, but also the guide and instructions for a safe setup and celebration.” For more information, visit raardesignco.com.

pure bliss SERVE YOUR GUESTS AN INDULGENT, NOURISHING TREAT FROM PLANTHROPIE

written by rebecca voigt styled by erika patterson photography by ee berger SHORTLY AFTER GIVING birth to her son, Rua Francis Oshana discovered that he was severely allergic to dairy. “That was the defining moment when we decided to fully transition to a wholesome, plant-based nutrition,” Oshana says. But when she couldn’t find nourishing desserts and cheese that her family could indulge in, Oshana decided to create her own. In 2017, Oshana founded Planthropie, a plant-based cheese and dessert bar that uses ethically sourced, high quality organic and raw ingredients to create handcrafted, nourishing indulgences. With a core menu and seasonal flavors that rotate throughout the year, Planthropie has grown from operating out of Oshana’s home kitchen and pop-ups at farmer’s markets to a shop located in downtown Birmingham. Some of the most popular offerings include the Cheese Tasting Tour, Signature Cheesecake, and the Rose Pistachio cake. Planthropie also offers cheese and dessert experiences for weddings, bridal showers, and other special events. “Planthropie was born as a solution to fill a market void for healthconscious food options,” Oshana says. “Our mission is to create food as art and medicine focusing on desserts and cheese because these two are the hardest to give up when you want to lead a healthy lifestyle.” To learn more, visit planthropie.com.

Planthropie’s plant-based cheeses and desserts are nourishing, healthful indulgences perfect for serving on your wedding day. Pictured from top: Salted Caramel Cheesecake, Rose Pistachio Garden Cake, Triple Raspberry Fudge, Garlic Noir Cashew Cheese, and Aged Dill Cashew Cheese

Smash Cakes Detroit “Bridesmaid” custom cakes, $65 each.

party on A CREATIVE WAY TO ASK THEM TO JOIN YOUR DAY

written by rebecca voigt photography and styling by gerard + belevender

THE FRIENDS AND FAMILY you choose to stand by your side on your wedding day are there for a reason — they are your biggest cheerleaders, your shoulders to cry on when planning gets stressful, and the people who will bend over backward to make sure you have the wedding of your dreams. When it’s time to ask them to be part of your wedding party, why not go above and beyond to show them how much they mean to you? With a custom creation from Smash Cakes Detroit, you can do just that. Founded in 2020 by Elyse Finnegan and Nicole Jaber, the nouveau pinata concept offers custom “cakes” made of gourmet chocolate hardened in hollow molds and then filled with anything from candy to gift cards, notes, lottery tickets, sonograms, and even cash. “There are so many creative angles we can take with these cakes, the possibilities are endless and can be created for almost any occasion,” Finnegan says. “Our most memorable cake was a smash cake version of a twotier classic wedding cake filled with $250 in singles — such an awesome way to show up to a wedding and have them smash open their present rather than opening up an envelope.” If you prefer to fill your cake with something delicious, consider choosing one of your friend’s favorite treats (options include Starbursts, Skittles, Hershey’s Kisses, and so much more) and adding a sweet note asking them to be part of your big day. Smash cakes are currently available for local pick-up and delivery only, and prices start at $25 per cake. For more information or to place an order, visit instagram.com/smashcakesdetroit or email order@smashcakesdetroit.com.

“MY FIRST LOVE HAS ALWAYS BEEN storytelling,” says Tiffany Harold, the owner and designer behind The Ambrosia Rabbit, a bespoke calligraphy and stationery studio based in metro Detroit. “And part of storytelling is creating,” she says. “I do all of this for the absolute joy in creating. It is my chance to put something out there in the universe.” Harold’s creations for The Ambrosia Rabbit (a whimsical combination of her middle name and zodiac sign) go far beyond typical wedding stationery. They are stunning, one-of-a-kind “dreamscapes” that feature handcrafted and artisanal details that serve as visual and tangible depictions of each couple’s unique love story. In 2018, Harold was working in advertising when she moved to Michigan from New York. “When I came here, I

was very busy at work, didn’t have a lot of friends, and I really needed a creative outlet,” she says. “I took a local calligraphy course with Vicki Corwin and Kathy McCreedy, well-known calligraphers in the area, and I never looked back.” A marketer by day, Harold officially established The Ambrosia Rabbit in early 2020, imbuing her marketing and branding acumen into her work. “I love when couples come to me at the beginning stage because it’s like how we start peeling back the onion and treating this like a true narrative from start to finish,” she says. “If you can get to me at the beginning, we can really design event branding, and that will mean looking at your monogram, what kind of textures you want, your color theory, your theme. And that might even determine how you select your vendors along the way.” As a full-service calligrapher and stationer, Harold specializes in everything from invitations, thank you notes, and save-the-dates to signage, menus, and programs. She even works with photographers to schedule a separate flat lay session of the wedding invitation suite. Her goal in all of her designs is to find at least one element that creates visual interest and gives her work a level of complexity. Whether that’s using handmade paper sourced from smallbatch producers, encrusting a belly band in pearls, or writing on an unexpected material like leather, each element is an opportunity to weave a personal narrative while creating moments of “surprise and delight.” “When you do calligraphy, it’s not like printing. You’re not going to get the same shapes sometimes … but all of that drives a sense of true uniqueness,” Harold says. “I think it’s so important to have these little pieces that reflect your choices and how you want to be unique.” For more, visit theambrosiarabbit.com

Arms Front and Side Lateral Raises Grab a pair of dumbbells, stand with feet shoulder-width apart and a slight bend in knees. Hold the dumbbells in front of body with palms facing legs, slight bend in elbows. Slowly lift arms until elbows are in line with shoulders, palms facing floor. Pause then slowly lower to starting position. Repeat for 10-12 reps. Next, return to starting position and repeat with arms to the side, lifting weights out to the side until arms are parallel with the floor, elbows slightly bent. Pause, lower, and repeat for 10-12 reps.

Hold for a count, then lower to starting position and repeat for two sets of 12 reps.

Legs and Shoulders Squat Shoulder Press Hold dumbbells in a neutral position next to ears, and stand with feet shoulder width apart. Begin to squat, keeping your core tight. As you rise from the squat, press the dumbbells toward the ceiling. Bring them back to the starting position and repeat for two sets of 12 reps.

“When I met Lucas, I immediately felt a sense of kindness and warmth,” says Jacob Lewkow (left) of his husband, Lucas Aguera. The couple was brought together by Tinder — they both swiped right.

love in the time of zoom A COUPLE BROUGHT TOGETHER BY MODERN TECHNOLOGY EMBRACES IT ON THEIR WEDDING DAY

written by elizabeth swanson photography by rachelle welling photography JACOB LEWKOW and Lucas Aguera’s relationship is truly a modern romance: They met on the internet and they married on the internet. They didn’t intend to livestream their wedding ceremony on Zoom, but like many couples who tied the knot in 2020, planning a wedding during the Covid-19 pandemic required creativity and a little technology. “Usually people who dream to get married can postpone their wedding for a year or two, but because I’m foreign, if we waited until the pandemic was over, my immigration status might not have been valid,” says Aguera, a mechanical engineer who is from Brazil. Lewkow and Aguera met in 2015 when Lewkow, a Detroit-based photographer, moved to Brush Park and Aguera was at Wayne State University’s campus for an internship with General Motors through an exchange program. Their worlds collided via Tinder: they both swiped right. “When I met Lucas, I immediately felt a sense of kindness and warmth,” Lewkow says. “I learned he devoted time to terminally ill cancer patients in Brazil. He showed me pictures, Patch Adams style, of him dressed up in costumes. That really touched my heart.” Aguera’s internship ended and he returned to Brazil to finish his degree, so

the couple decided to give a long distance relationship a shot. A turning point in their relationship was a trip to Europe — realizing they were compatible travel buddies, they decided they’d do whatever it took to make it work. Luckily, a few years later Aguera was able to return to Detroit on a work permit. “We’re very much yin and yang,” Lewkow says. “I’m the extrovert, Lucas is the introvert. I’m creative, he’s logical. I wear my heart on my sleeve, he’s reserved. If he is the anchor, I am the kite. I think that’s what makes us such a dynamic team.” Lewkow proposed in August 2020 while at a friend’s cottage in Marquette. They had gone out for a scenic kayak ride, complete with sake and a marijuana pipe. Kayaking had been a big theme during the pandemic, as it was one way the couple could get together with friends while feeling safe and responsible. This time, however, it was a diversion tactic to give their friends time to set the scene with music and food. When they were ready, one of Lewkow’s friends flew a drone, signaling it was time to paddle back to shore. “I got down on one knee — although I forgot to put down my sake, so I was falling around in the sand,” Lewkow says. “It was a mess, but in the best way.” They set the wedding date for

The couple’s online wedding was “perfectly imperfect,” Lewkow says. While they eventually plan to host an inperson celebration, Aguera says they’ll be rewatching the Zoom ceremony for years to come.

December 27 at Lewkow’s parents’ home in West Bloomfield. Saturated with natural light and plenty of plants, their family room provided the perfect, lush surroundings for the intimate nuptials. Floral arrangements by Graham Stanton complimented the scenery and, in lieu of suits, the couple wore brightly embroidered Mexican shirts, made even brighter against the winter backdrop. Six people attended the wedding in person: Lewkow’s mom and dad (who officiated the ceremony), along with his sister and his sister’s boyfriend. Everyone else attended via Zoom. “The ceremony was at 3 p.m., and at 2:57 p.m., I hear my mom in the other room coaching my 93-year-old grandma to get on the Zoom call,” Lewkow says with a laugh. “The whole Zoom situation was hilariously not well produced. The guest list was made quickly, so we probably left some people off who we would’ve otherwise invited in person. And we didn’t have a professional photographer — it was so cute how my friends were screenshotting the Zoom screen. My friend Josh was like, ‘I got the first shot of you guys kissing!’” They ended the day with sushi from Sharaku. “It was very special, it was our style — it was perfectly imperfect, and having our friends and family there on Zoom made us excited to plan a bigger wedding in the future,” Lewkow says. “We do want the big, grandiose celebration, because we feel an extreme embarrassment of riches of everyone supporting us, especially my family. I don’t take it for granted one second. They really spoil us when it comes to showing love, support and compassion.” But they’ll always have their Zoom wedding, which they feel extremely lucky for (“and which we’ll be watching for years to come,” Aguera adds). And one day, they’ll be able to tell their grandchildren they were among the first couples to get married on the internet.

IN A YEAR with a global pandemic and tense social and political climate, as well as economic uncertainty, taking a moment to celebrate love — like that of Angela Wisniewski-Cobbina and Awenate Cobbina — is a welcome break from the world’s chaos. Angela, owner of Coup D’État, a fashion and lifestyle boutique in downtown Detroit, and Awenate, CEO of Bedrock Group LP, met by chance in 2017 through a mutual friend at Ottava Via in Corktown. “I heard his name through friends, but I’d never met him. It was nice to put a face to the name,” Angela says. “We’ve been together ever since.” During 2020, Awenate was traveling back and forth between Detroit and Washington, D.C. for business, and Angela was focused on managing her shop. So naturally, it was a surprise when Awenate popped the question on the rooftop of her friend’s loft in Lafayette Park. “When he proposed to me, it was this excited relief,” Angela says. “Something really beautiful coming out of a really weird year.” Once the excitement of the engagement settled, they were faced with the big question: Have a downsized wedding now? Or wait for the pandemic to pass and go big? “We both agreed to do it sooner than later,” Angela says. “I didn’t want to put effort into planning [a big wedding] that I felt we’d have to keep postponing.” They decided to marry in Washington, D.C. on February 13, 2021 — a ceremony at St. Anselm’s Abbey followed by a reception at the historic Hay-Adams hotel in downtown D.C. While Awenate was born in Philadelphia, he was raised in Washington, D.C., where he attended St. Anselm’s Abbey School for grades eight through 12. “We decided to get married in D.C. because so much of our life and memories are in Detroit, and we wanted to incorporate my home into our life and memories,” he says.

Hosting a small, intimate wedding allowed the couple to focus on perfecting the details, such as the flowers by Lindsay McWhorter of Niche Hitch Florals, a custom-made caricature of the couple created by political cartoonist Kevin “Kal” Kallaugher, gift boxes for their guests, and a stunning cake by Liberty Baking Co.

With such a small group traveling for their big day, Angela and Awenate put a significant focus on perfecting small details. One such detail was the gift boxes for guests, which were packed with some of their favorite snacks, candies from Bon Bon Bon in Hamtramck, and a notecard with a custom-made caricature of the couple created by political cartoonist Kevin “Kal” Kallaugher. The dinner reception took place at Top of the Hay — a venue at the top of the Hay-Adams with panoramic views of the U.S. Capitol. While there was no DJ or dancing, the small party of 10 had certain benefits that often get lost in larger celebrations. “It was a little different than what I would have expected when I thought about getting married as a kid,” Angela says, “but it was actually perfect because it was so small and intimate.” “We were able to spend time with each guest, our families and friends were able to spend time with each other, and each guest spoke at the reception,” Awenate adds. “I don’t know that we [otherwise] could have replicated that amount of love in one room at one time.” Despite the stress of planning an out-of-state wedding, mixed with the uncertainty of the world, their wedding day went exactly as planned. “Everything was perfect,” Angela says. “I trusted the universe in this situation, and everything was magical.” And when the time is right, they plan on having a larger celebration to bring their families and friends together. “Do a tiny wedding now and have a big party later if you have concerns, because you can never have too many parties, right?” Angela says. “Hopefully by then we can be a little more free and we can truly merge our worlds together.” Wedding: St. Anselm’s Abbey, Washington, D.C.
