ade for Living,” an oversized book on the coffee table in a newly built Bloomfield Hills home, sums up the owners’ overall design philosophy and their priorities. Located on a cul de sac, the house sits on a long and narrow 2.75-acre lot that abuts the Rouge River and was originally occupied by a house that dated to the 1930s. Prior owners had tried to renovate the home, but its proximity to the river caused a series of problems — issues that still hadn’t been resolved when the new family first toured the existing structure. The couple knew they might have to start from scratch to get what they wanted, and the property was the perfect blank slate they were looking for. After the initial home was knocked down, the team of architect Alexander Bogaerts of Bloomfield Hills, builder Thomas Sebold & Associates Inc. of Bloomfield Hills, and Birmingham interior designer Marianne Jones came together to craft

a plan that included an approximately 6,600-square-foot home with five bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, and an enviable 700-square-foot cabana. The homeowners’ wish list included a Shingle-style house similar to those found on Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Cape Cod — a look that the woman of the home says was “right up Marianne’s alley.” Jones was on board from the start. “Nantucket is my happy place, so I knew exactly the vibe they wanted,” she says, adding that the philosophy extended to the home’s easygoing yet elegant interiors. Choices included low-maintenance porcelain countertops in the kitchen (“they needed it to be bulletproof for the family,” Jones explains), fun wallpapers, and multipurpose spaces that welcome their large extended family, yet also work when it’s just the two of them. The vacation-like attitude extends to the exterior, which includes a pool and tennis courts. An in-law suite with an elevator, located near the back of the house, also has a small coffee bar and refrigerator. Other highlights include a master bedroom sitting room; a three-season room with screens, a fireplace, and heaters off the great room; the lower-level bar, theater, and game room; and the 700-square-foot cabana, which overlooks the pool and tennis courts. “It’s a great party spot,” the lady of the house says. Adds Jones: “It’s very comfortable and welcoming, because that’s who they are. It’s a testament to them.” A house made for living, indeed.

hen Hurricane Irma hit Florida in 2017, a Michigan couple’s home in the Ocean Reef Club on the northernmost tip of Key Largo was destroyed. An electrical fire started and “smoke covered the entire home,” says interior designer Armina Kasprowicz, of Armina Interiors in Rochester Hills. What to do? Rebuild, of course — and Kasprowicz was just the designer the woman of the house had in mind to bring beauty back to her Sunshine State getaway. Kasprowicz had previously redesigned the couple’s home in West Bloomfield, and they were very happy with those results. “Armina has a great eye and makes a house a home,” the homeowner says. “It all had to be gutted to the studs,” Kasprowicz adds. In early 2018, Kasprowicz put on her design cap — or sun visor — and headed back down (several times) to the coastal land of viridian greens and splashy teals. She came up with a plan that would turn out a home awash in sandy driftwood hues and serene blues, pops of sunshine yellow, and modern lines. It was perfect for the lady of the house, who has as much energy as the dolphins that splash just steps from the patio. Between practicing yoga, swimming, cycling, and golfing, the homeowner says her Florida home is a great place to gather. “We love to cook and enjoy entertaining,” she says. “It’s the perfect place

REMARKABLE REBUILD

to do both.” Before the hurricane, the home had several closed spaces with “tiny little windows,” Kasprowicz says, adding: “The kitchen had a Tuscan style and the house was designed in a French provincial style.” Today, the five-bedroom residence “doesn’t look like a traditional Florida home,” Kasprowicz says. “You get an airy feeling. It’s modernized and clean, but still has the vibe of an ocean home.” The interior designer is keen on choosing just the right lighting and ensuring that it complements the natural light that streams into the home. In the dining room/kitchen area, for example, “the light bounces through the glass of the bubble-glass pendants,” she explains. It also bounces off the light oak cabinetry. “The whites and the light cabinets make it airy and fresh and warm. It’s welcoming, functional, and durable. It’s easy, and you don’t have to tiptoe around.” This space opens to the outdoors, which makes it especially appealing. On the adjoining terrace, which used to have a screened enclosure, an aging Jacuzzi had been located right in the center. Kasprowicz says the setup wasn’t functional. “There was no room for dining or furniture, so we designed a space for a new Jacuzzi and a pool. “As a designer, I concentrate on how my clients want to live and function in their house and environment. I design spaces to support their lifestyle. I redesigned the spaces to connect the indoors to the outdoors, and create better flow and function. As a result, they have an outdoor dining area and a kitchen with a spacious lounge area.”

he original cottage that once stood overlooking the west arm of Walloon Lake near Petoskey was a “1970s type with very low ceilings and had probably been added on to through the years,” recalls interior designer Nicole Withers, of Jones-Keena & Co. in Birmingham. Perched above the lake, the original structure’s views were remarkable. Maximizing those views and reorganizing the interior spaces to take better advantage of the lot’s scenic setting were priorities for the redo that began in 2017. “Really comfortable and family friendly” were touchpoints for the homeowners. The team included the homeowners;Withers, who had worked with them on other design projects; and Steve Steffes, of Petoskey’s North Bay Construction. “We took it down to the studs,” Withers says. “We redid the façade, changing it into a charming farmhouse.” Since the homeowners were starting over with the property, the team seized the opportunity to improve on

the floor plan and the 3,800-square-foot home’s interior flow. “We definitely reorganized the space,” the designer says, adding that in addition to moving some rooms, they decided to follow the roof structure and add beams to emphasize it. “We took the ceilings up to get interesting ceiling details. Doing that changed the feeling of the house.” A working stone fireplace was added for what the homeowners call “that real Up North look.” Hues found in the stone inspired the colors used throughout the house, according to the designer. “ We tried to make the spaces flow together,” Withers says. “The old kitchen was closed off, but the space is now open to the view of the lake. When you walk in from the front door, you can see the lake.” Other priorities included creating a warm and welcoming getaway that accommodates the homeowners as well as their three sons and dogs. The four-bedroom, five-bath project took approximately a year to complete. “I feel like we really made good choices,” Withers says. “This is one of those projects where everything aligned.” As for the homeowner, she says she relaxes the minute she walks in and sees the lake. “Everything slows down,” she says. “It’s just a cozy, easy place.”

hey had been happily living in their Rochester home for several years, but as their three daughters grew up, married, and moved out, this couple thought it would be a good idea to purchase property closer to their children. The couple decided to build a new open-floorplan home in Birmingham on a narrow lot. And narrow it is! The finished home is 30 feet wide, while the lot is 50 feet wide. “(The architect and builder) put in so many windows, you don’t feel like you’re in a narrow home,” the wife says. “We feel like we have privacy, and there’s light like crazy.” The idea of creating a brownstone-style home appealed to the couple. “Many of my girlfriends call our home ‘The Mary Poppins house,’ ” she says, laughing. Adds the husband: “Many people describe it as a ‘Chicago Townhouse.’ ” Blue is the home’s strongest color influence. Interior designer Kathleen McGovern and her team, which includes Lynn Simlar, Suzan Harbin, and Julia Gough, wove the hue throughout the living space, and blue tiles in three dramatic installations serve to link the blue motif. In a first-floor parlor,

A bold blue herringbone-patterned Seneca tile on the range wall in the kitchen is head-turning. “That tile really kind of drove the strategy for what came around it, including the chairs,” McGovern says. To create even more continuity and cohesiveness, the blue hexagon-shaped floor tile in the home’s back entryway references the same palette. The kitchen is both aesthetically appealing and practical, which the homeowners — who love to cook — say they appreciate. The couple is also happy with their pantry and second sink and dishwasher, neatly tucked behind the gathering/cooking area of the kitchen so they’re not in view. eadlines can yield miracles. Just ask Meg Corley, founder and principal designer of Meg Corley Premier Interiors in Birmingham, who was put to the test with a 10,000-square-foot home remodel in Rochester that needed to be finished in time for the backyard wedding of her clients’ son. “We had pretty much demolished the entire home, and then the (COVID-19) lockdown started,” Corley says. “The initial wedding date was moved to early September, and luckily my clients weren’t living (in the home). “We wanted to save the amazing bones and other details, like the molding that was already in place,” Corley adds, explaining that while the new look is more current, it still has a relaxed, traditional vibe. And while the clients and the designer decided to keep the existing millwork, Corley says it got a makeover that now showcases the beautiful oak details in the library. More eye candy can be found in the master bathroom, where grasscloth covers the paneling. Wool carpet and a crystal chandelier join nightstands with a two-tone effect that adds contrast to the more streamlined background. “It’s more traditional, so I wanted to marry the two (so they would) flow together, making it seem a little more timeless,” the designer explains. The home’s lower level was completely redone. “The couple wanted a lower level that felt like an extension of the rest of the home, not a basement,” Corley says. The homeowners say Corley, who was still installing two days before the wedding, deserves praise for her efforts, but the designer is hesitant to take the spotlight. Instead, she credits her clients and colleagues for the project’s success. “They were so easygoing, and I couldn’t have done it without my staff and all the trades. It’s a team effort. I want to give them kudos.” The project’s success was sealed when the wedding planner posted photos of the big day and people said: “I want to book my wedding there!”

his beauty is perfectly situated on a sprawling 4-acre site in the historic village of Milford. The modern, 5,000-squarefoot Farmhouse-style home, completed in 2019, looks as if it’s been there for at least 100 years. Its beauty garnered first place for the folks at Milford-based M.J. Whelan Construction, which won the top award in the Detroit Design Awards 2021 Readers’ Choice competition for Best Overall Home. Double doors create a welcoming entry, and the stately foyer showcases a staircase with tall wainscoting and classic millwork that extends to the second story. Coffered ceilings set the tone for the cozy home, while tall doors and bowed windows stretch from the lower-level walkout to the main floor. Timeless design features include wood floors, warm tones, a distinctive great room with a magnificent fireplace, and a splendid mainfloor master suite. Charming details define the exterior, which sports a black-and-white palette and exudes classic character — and maybe even a hint of Southern flair. With a mix of design characteristics, including a wraparound porch and a metal roof, traditional meets modern to create a winning combination. The company’s sister outfit, Authentic Kitchen & Design, worked on the kitchen, master bath, and lower level. The striking structure also includes a spacious covered patio, complete with a fireplace and a built-in barbecue. Its tongue-and-groove ceiling, with open timbers, is a beautiful touch. A carriage house that’s destined to become a recreational space is also located on the pretty property. Well done, M.J. Whelan!

ess fussy with a cleaner look” is what these homeowners had in mind when they built their current home in Bloomfield Township. After living in a more traditional home, the couple was ready to embrace a simpler, more streamlined aesthetic when they built on a lot with views of Oakland Hills Country Club, says designer Cheryl Nestro, of Northville’s Tutto Interiors, who worked with the couple on the project. The pair had been living nearby and started working with Nestro and architect Allan Djordjevic after tearing down the lot’s existing Mid-century Modern ranch. “Our goal for the exterior architecture was to have the look of a French Chateau-style home. The attraction for us was our love of limestone, in combination with a slate tile roof and manicured landscaping. By selecting a smooth limestone and keeping with the clean lines, we tried to achieve an elevation that was elegant with a modern twist,” the husband says. Another wish-list item was an open-concept floor plan — with plenty of space for two of their favorite activities, entertaining and cooking — that made the most of the home’s available views.

The 5,200-square-foot main level includes an expansive great room, chef’s kitchen, and dining area that, along with the master suite and study/den, have enviable vistas of the course and clubhouse. There are also two guest suites in the front of the home. A bonus room/in-law suite, second guest suite, and finished lower-level walkout with another guest suite, full bar, and hidden prep kitchen are accessible via either an elevator or staircase. The homeowners like to gather family and friends for homemade pasta nights or Sunday dinner. The man of the house’s request for a 90-inch television over the fireplace presented an unexpected challenge, Nestro says. “I fought him on that for about four months,” the designer admits. “I told him 90-inch TVs go in a theater room, not a main-level great room. We had many laughs over that, but he won.” Nestro says once she gave in to the TV, she abandoned her original fireplace design for one that features a beautiful woven walnut surround. “The fireplace has such a presence in the room that you hardly notice the TV,” she says. Ceilings that reach up to 24 feet in the main rooms don’t hurt, either. “They’re very atypical of a ranch,” Nestro explains, adding that “it has a very warm and inviting feeling, which is sometimes hard to accomplish with these ceiling heights.” Construction took a little more than two years, but the house and the lot were worth the wait, the homeowners say. And they sure don’t miss their old look. The home has been everything they expected, and more.

ike many homeowners, the residents of this eye-catching new-build on West Bloomfield’s Walnut Lake spent a lot of time dreaming and planning. “We had a certain idea of how we wanted it to be built,” the owner says of the more than 10,000-square-foot (including basement) residence, completed in 2017. “We spent a lot of energy thinking about it and working on it,” he admits, adding that the project became “almost a full-time job.” When it came time to turn dreams into reality, one goal took priority: Making sure there was plenty of natural light. Merging indoor and outdoor spaces was another design goal. “This is such a beautiful spot, we wanted to bring the outside in — not just through the light, but through the materials we chose, too,” the homeowner says. “We love contemporary style and we were very clear about what we wanted,” he says, adding that he and his wife believe “less in a house can be more.” The couple chose architect Kevin Akey of AZD Associates, who had worked with a business associate, and Bob Watson of Watson Custom Builders. “We loved Kevin’s design right from the get-go,” the husband raves. Akey designed a soaring four-story structure that takes full advantage of the light and the lot, which includes 130 feet of lake frontage. “It was a nice, wide lot with a view of the entire lake,” Akey says of the land. Unfortunately, the property also had one problematic feature: it was very steep, which presented a building challenge. The steepness made building a standard two-story home with a walk-out difficult. His solution was an innovative 20-foot bridge that provides both an eye-catching entrance and abundant light in the lower levels. “It’s about as dramatic as a house can be when you walk in,” the

architect says of the entrance, a feature the homeowner says garners enthusiastic reviews from visitors of all ages, who he says are “blown away.” Flat roofs on the garage and what Akey calls “ribbons of glass” on the front exterior allow even more light into the kitchen, which is where the family spends most of their day. Once inside, the house spreads out over four levels. The lowest level is home to an approximately 2,000-squarefoot indoor roller blade hockey rink and storage space. While the family’s life “happens in the kitchen,” there’s so much more to the home, including a covered three-season porch with views of the lake (and a door and retractable screens) off the kitchen, a walk-out pool and hot tub (with a special energy-efficient day cover that extends the season), and unusual floating stairs between levels. Akey describes the home’s design as “warm industrial.” The homeowners also credit “lighting expert” Bob Scherer and Arkitektura’s Lori Winslow Gordon with helping them with the interiors. “People come to us because they want something out of the ordinary,” Akey says. “This is definitely one of our more unique homes.”

OPEN & AIRY

Lots of open space and plenty of gathering areas were imporant elements of the home’s design.

hen a couple returned from living and working in the Cayman Islands to be close to his parents in Ann Arbor, they couldn’t find a house nearby that fit their needs. So his parents said they could build on the land in front of their home. It was a wonderful solution, not just because the proximity would allow the couple’s kids to get to know and enjoy their grandparents, but also because the homeowner has so many fond childhood memories of playing in the ravine near the Nichols Arboretum, which his parents’ property abuts. The couple had never built a house before, but they had a long list of wants and needs. They sat down with Brad and Theresa Angelini, of Angelini & Associates Architects in Ann Arbor, and gave them their wish list. The couple previously lived in a Mid-century home, and spelled out what they liked and disliked about that type of design. After living in the Caymans, one imperative was harnessing natural light. “They wanted a home that would follow the sun throughout the day and the seasons,” Brad Angelini says. Because the home would be built on a densely wooded lot with light from above and no direct sunlight, the job entailed tilting the roof in a way that would maximize natural daylight by reflecting the light into the space from the ceiling. Another challenge was to maximize all of the rooms in the house; the couple didn’t want any areas that would take up space but be infrequently used. Energy-efficiency was also a high priority. Finally, each of their three kids’ bedrooms had to be exactly the same size — no arguing allowed! “It was a tight budget with no wiggle room,” says Brad Angelini, who adds that building on the property itself, which already held a classic home that’s been an Ann Arbor landmark since 1870, was a hairy proposition. “I couldn’t hide that house,” Brad Angelini says, referring to the owner’s parents’ home. “The living spaces occupied a long rectangle perpendicular to the existing home on the site,” he adds. “The mid-ground views from both homes were to the open space between the structures, and the long views were into the woods.” From bringing in the light to using space efficiently, all the goals were met for this Ann Arbor beauty.

he 17,000-square-foot home on Lake Angelus is one of architect Lou DesRosiers’ latest and perhaps greatest designs. Facing what some say is the perfect direction — southwest — with lots of cantilevered overhangs to filter the light from morning to night, it’s tucked into the verdant landscape on a bluff over the lake and functions not only as a family home, but also as a place for entertaining. “It’s intimate enough for a family, but can handle small gatherings as well as large events,” says DesRosiers, who collaborated with Bloomfield Hills interior designer Bob Schaerer and Royal Oak custom builder Bill Derocher on the project. Schaerer says working with DesRosiers, as his firm has done since the late 1970s, is a blast. “He’s unique, because most architects aren’t involved from start to finish. He’s an incredible character.

We’ve worked together so long, we work well together.” The deadline the client requested, 18 months, was tough. And there was one small problem: Another house was already on the site, and it needed to disappear. “It took a long time to get the permits before the house was torn down,” Schaerer recalls. Now that the project is complete, the homeowners can stroll beneath a sky-lit front canopy and over a glass walkway that filters sunlight into the lower level, and take in the panoramic view of the lake at the other end. These are seriously luxurious digs, but decidedly cozy at the same time. “In these very large homes, people need a lot of wood to feel warm and cozy,” DesRosiers explains. “It makes you feel more attached to nature.” There’s a custom boat house with a kitchen, too — this team thought of everything. And they almost made the deadline: The project was completed in 22 months.

urchasing a home at Dearborn’s TPC (Tournament Players Club), a private golf club with a championship course designed by Jack Nicklaus, was the perfect choice for a couple who loves the game. Still, a renovation had to be undertaken before the empty-nesters could make their mark — a transitional-with-an-edge aesthetic — on the home. They got a perfect score thanks to Tami Kessler, owner of Tamara Kessler & Associates Inc. in Grosse Pointe Woods, who worked on the project with her assistant, Sarah Gilpin, and MHB Companies, LLC. The two-story house in the gated neighborhood already had some redeeming architectural features like expansive windows, but the interiors needed structural updates. “They wanted to have a home they could entertain in that was also great for the two of them,” Kessler says. “The walls were opened up to make the spaces more conducive to a group.” For more impactful interiors, Kessler added contents that contrast. “It’s important to get your eye to travel around the room between the art, fabric, furnishings, and accessories,” she says. “Visual focal points provide eye candy.” A skillful mix of finishes, from a mirrored console to a wood-and-metal staircase, make a great first impression. Black and gold accents stand out against the marble floor, which was already in place. “It all plays well together,” Kessler says. French doors, graphic rugs, updated wall treatments, contemporary bookshelves, and “wow” windows (they did away with the drapery to reveal gorgeous views of the golf course) round out the beauty. Warm gray walls and crisp white trim establish a tranquil environment. “It keeps it calm,” Kessler says. Additional special elements include bolster pillows secured to a custom bench, crystal pendants, upholstered kitchen stools, and reframed art. In the master bedroom, where the sky blue textural wallpaper coordinates with the bedding and a leopard print chair, a linear rug adds a unique visual element. Finally, landscape lighting ensures the golf course is visible at night. “We wanted to enhance that gorgeous vista and bring that element inside,” Kessler says. In the end, it’s all about the site.

ou can’t argue with success, according to the owner of this new-build in Franklin. He had already worked with designer Jeffrey King on a number of projects, including a previous residence, business offices in three cities, a condo, and a city apartment. Then he got married, and he and his newly expanded family decided the time had come to upsize. “It was evident we needed more space,” he says. Not surprisingly, the Birmingham-based designer had the perfect answer: a spec home he’d been working on in Franklin with Lake Orion builder Rock Homes. At 8,500 square feet, the traditional, Tudor-inspired red brick residence — with a design King calls “classic Franklin” — is large, yet doesn’t feel cold or cavernous. Part of what makes the home work is the interior design, which King pulled together with a warm neutral color he calls “where gray meets beige.” It’s punctuated with bold art and accessories. The unifying palette can be found throughout most of the home, in both public and private spaces — from the two-story living room and openplan kitchen and family room to the home’s six full suites, including two masters, two children’s rooms, and two rooms for guests. it’s a favorite spot for entertaining business clients and her large, extended family. The family often gathers to watch movies in the theater, surrounded by walls that sport posters from their favorite films. King worked closely with Spire Integrated Services of Troy to design the open-concept theater, which he says is a trend. Nearby, an extensive wine cellar houses dozens of bottles. King says he often works with spec homes and finds the projects enjoyable. “For this one, I’d been involved even before the shovel went into the ground,” he says. “(This home is) big, but Jeffrey did such a great job that it doesn’t feel too big or overwhelming,” the homeowner explains. “It’s a warm and friendly home with a wonderful flow.” And that’s not at all surprising for a designer with such a long history of success.

growing family needed more space but loved their location. The solution? Find a potential new home in the area they already loved. Fortunately, they were able to purchase a teardown ranch in the same neighborhood that had a nice, wide lot that could accommodate the modern yet traditional home they had in mind. Designer Sharon Kory, of Sharon Kory Interiors in Birmingham, was brought in when the project was still in the architectural drawing stage, she says. Inspiration photos from the homeowners helped her and builder Jason Scott, of Scott Quality Homes, translate the family’s dreams into reality. Both working professionals, the homeowners wanted the new house to have plenty of space and storage to accommodate their active lives. “Our daughters play tennis and lacrosse, and swim, ski, and play golf,” the wife says. The first-floor layout includes an open kitchen and living room, a formal dining room, and two offices — one designed for adults, the other a bright, cheerful homework center. Instead of a traditional mud room, the house has a larger “mud hall” that incorporates two mud rooms, a large walk-in closet, a half bath, and a laundry dedicated to pool towels and athletic wear. A comfortable “teen lounge” with a plenty of natural sunlight and a cathedral ceiling gives the girls a space of their own where they can hang out with friends. Upstairs are four bedrooms, including a master with a workout room that overlooks the backyard pool, three baths, and a convenient second laundry room. Simple yet stylish, the interiors can be described as “soft modern,” says Kory, who kept the active family in mind while making design decisions. “We used performance fabrics and kept the palette in neutrals, with pops of navy,” she explains. “The house has warmth, but feels elegant at the same time.” A mix of light and bright white spaces and a few moodier dark ones ensures visual variety, she says, with the formal dining room offering a transitional space between the two. The casual style extends to the outdoor spaces, which include inviting dining and relaxing areas overlooking the in-ground pool. A heated outdoor loggia is a nice plus. In fact, everything meets the family’s immediate needs but also works well for larger crowds. “We’ve hosted friends and family year-round since we moved in,” the wife says. “The house has held parties of more than 100, as well as small gatherings of our closest friends.” “They’re really happy with how it all turned out,” Kory says of the project, adding that it was a pleasure to work on. “Luckily, we’ve all been on the same page from the beginning.”

arrie Long, of Carrie Long Interiors in Royal Oak, has been in high demand these past couple years. One of her prettiest projects to date is a romantic three-level, 4,500-plussquare-foot Tudor for which she worked on interior design. The house, just a quick walk from downtown Birmingham, oozes with character, charm, tray ceilings, and custom moldings. Working from Birmingham architect Brian Neeper’s drawings, she detailed out the interior and all the millwork, and specified finishes for the exterior. Royal Oak’s HM homes served as the builder. “I put my heart and soul into it,” the designer says. “I wanted it to be modern classic Birmingham, true to the city’s architecture. I also wanted it to be timeless.” The residence, which features a lovely palette of pinks, grays, whites, and creams, was built to be a family home where the owners’ grown

son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren could gather comfortably around the holidays. It features two master suites — one for the homeowners and another in the guest wing over the garage, which has its own special entry and stairway. Two more bedrooms and a total of seven baths guarantee privacy and deluxe accommodations for the homeowners’ overnight visitors. The kitchen is bright and creamy white, with a glass mosaic backsplash, quartzite countertop, stainless-strapped steel vent hood, custom cabinets, high-end appliances, and three seats at the island. LED lighting from the tray ceiling adds ambience and texture. Upstairs, a large circular anteroom leads to the master bedroom, bath, and master closet. Lavish materials, custom furniture, plush bedding, a crystal chandelier, and built-ins abound. In the lower level, which spans the entire footprint of the house, there’s a bar, a wine room, game room, and a huge library, all perfect for family gatherings. Long calls her design eclectic and transitional. “That blend gives the house a little soul,” she explains.

HISTORIC BEAUTY

Born Again This 1930s cottage renovation on northern Michigan’s Walloon Lake involved some very heavy lifting — with a crane — and a smart blend of vintage and modern

alloon Lake has loads of history; it’s where Ernest Hemingway spent his boyhood summers at his family’s cottage. Many of the cottages were built in the 1930s and had fireplaces as their only heat source, low ceilings, and tiny windows to try to keep the spaces warm. Ninety years later, thanks to smart HVAC systems, stateof-the-art insulation, and low-e windows, these historic cabins are being optimized for heating and cooling, in addition to taking in the view. When the

new owners of one of those vintage cottages asked interior designer Jennifer Tysse, of NorthernView Homes + Interiors in Boyne City and Birmingham, to modernize their abode, yet make it blend in with the spirit of the other historic cabins on the lake, she knew she was in for a challenge. “It was a one-owner cabin, a neat old cottage,” Tysse says. The puzzle? It had an odd layout, since the cottage had been added onto a couple of times, with a bedroom configuration and hallway that weren’t used to their fullest potential. Plus, the master bedroom lacked a lake view.

BEACHY-KEEN

Both pages, clockwise from left: A bunk room, guest bath, dressing room, master bath, the exterior, and master bedroom all have beachy appeal.

The whole main floor had to be taken down to the studs, the walls had to be reinsulated, and a 12- by 16-foot annex had to be built for the master suite so Tysse could create a new space with an outdoor patio and private view of the water. In addition, the roof in the main living area had to be torn off and raised from 8 feet to 18 feet — a feat that was achieved by using a crane to add a ridge beam. The original fireplace is still intact, and has been updated for a cozier feel in the lodge-style great room. The rest of the interior is vastly different from its previous condition, however. It’s warm, streamlined, and its 3,200 square feet feature kid-proof finishes, northern Michigan maple floors, and custom cabinetry. The kitchen is perfect for entertaining, with a 12-footlong quartz island, two refrigerators, a Wolf cooktop, and everything one needs for accommodating guests. With a bunk room, guest bath, and an inviting master suite/dressing area, the home is just the ticket for creating memories. “We’re lucky that my company operates under one roof — design, building, cabinetry, carpentry — and that design drives the process,” Tysse says, adding that her biggest challenge was creating a lodge feel with the low-ceilinged great room. After deciding that the only thing to do was raise the roof and rip out the insides — a plan deemed sound by Petoskey architect Greg Presley — everyone involved with the project was glad they took the more complicated road. “That experience taught us that it’s worth doing it right,” the designer says.

KATHLEEN MCGOVERN STUDIO THE RECENT RESTORATION OF THIS GRACEFUL entryway and library was a partnership between Kathleen McGovern Studio and the homeowners. The spaces were the first selected for restoration in this 5,400 square foot English country home in Grosse Pointe. Their remarkable transformation was due to the owners’ commitment to take the historic house back to its bones. The ceiling-high natural limestone fireplace and hand hewn beams were stripped of layers of white paint. The library windows and floor were replaced and the lighting was upgraded with elegant chandeliers and sconces in both spaces. The color palette was established by combining deep green from the foyer’s slate floor and the client’s love of violet and blue. The furnishings create intimate entertaining areas. The library was designed with a custom bar, a multi-use game-table, and an abundance of luxurious seating. Collections of books and art add interest and importance and speak to the personal history and travels of the residents. The tri-colored slate floor specified by the original architect Robert O. Derrick in 1931 defines the circular motion of the entry. The focal point is the curvaceous velvet settee topped with a piece of emotional art depicting two ballerinas in dance.

AUTHENTIC KITCHEN & DESIGN “CREATING BEAUTIFUL THINGS WITH A PASSION to change lives” are words the team at Authentic Kitchen & Design lives by every day. They approach every project with a fresh eye toward the unique needs of each customer, applying a set of core principles to expertly guide them through the process: Put yourself first: Your kitchen is an opportunity for self-expression. It’s less about what’s on trend and more about who you are and how you live. The good news is you never go out of style. There’s real beauty in function: It’s truly a beautiful thing when a kitchen is designed around the specific needs of a household. It declutters the countertops, the process, and the flow of daily life. Prioritize quality: Great quality fit and finishes will pay dividends in how your kitchen looks, how it feels, and how it holds up over time—physically and aesthetically. Authentic Kitchen & Design is your path to simply beautiful living. Stop by or call to set up an appointment. Milford 248-529-3001 akdteam.com
