This sprawling rooftop lounge sits atop the newly renovated historic Book Tower building. The 14th floor hideaway is named for Louis Kamper, the tower’s original architect. Hockeytown Cafe

Right between Little Caesars Arena and the Fox Theatre, Hockeytown Cafe is a must-visit in the city proper. Created by the late Detroit Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch in 1999, the local pub is an homage to the city’s 11-time Stanley Cup champs. Opt to dine inside, surrounded by jerseys and other memorabilia, or take libations to the sports bar’s rooftop patio for views of Comerica Park and Woodward Avenue. At Face Candy spa in Troy, owner Asiel Elian believes that achieving that wedding day glow begins months in advance with proper skincare. Elian and her partner Amanda Afr, both certified tattoo artists specializing in permanent makeup, opened their business about six years ago, getting their start as microblading artists. Their journey began with two rooms in a medical building in Rochester Hills and has developed into a team of 15, including a medical director, a registered nurse, brow and lash specialists, estheticians, and more. Services include everything from microblading to filler, Botox, and medical grade facials. “A big part of our business is getting

women ‘wedding ready’,” Elian says. “We have women who come in a year before their wedding, and we see what concerns they have and are able to set them up on a yearlong plan to get them to their desired end result.” These plans include finding ways to combat concerns like dryness and acne through Hydrafacial and DiamondGlow facials, microneedling, filler, Botox, and more. “Something we all live by here is the idea that if your skin isn’t makeup ready, the makeup won’t look its best,” Elian says. Elian advises planning more intense services further out from the date of the wedding. “Lasers are something we would do in

advance of the wedding, and that’s the same with microneedling,” she says. “Right before the wedding we want to focus on soothing, cleansing, and hydrating.” Every bride is different, Elian says. She and her staff, which includes a makeup artist specializing in bridal makeup, encourage a more natural approach that enhances the clients’ features. “We tell our brides, ‘You want to look like the best version of yourself.’ You never want to look back at photos and think that it doesn’t look like you,” she says. “We do makeup trials to make sure brides are comfortable, not overly done, and so that you can see the skin and the work that you’ve been putting in leading up to your special day. When your skin is beautiful, the makeup is just an added bonus.”

McKnight has taken to heart in his decades of event planning, it’s that life’s big moments — from starting kindergarten to marrying the love of your life — deserve celebration. His Emerald City Designs is a leading special events company that provides a range of services, from

stationary for the invitations to spectacular floral arrangements. He’s spent 30 years building his business, but the joy of celebrating never gets old. “I love attending events still to this day,” McKnight says. “When I get invited to a wedding, whether or not we’re producing it, I get so excited.”

Emerald City Designs’ employs around 60 people, many of whom have been with the company for decades. The team’s massive Farmington Hills studio has a showroom with dozens of beautifully set tables, a large back room for floral arranging, and a 16,000-square-foot warehouse for storing all the other event essentials. All the flowers, equipment, and rentals, along with the bustling staff, give the studio the feeling of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory — or perhaps the Land of Oz is a better comparison. There, custom design plans for floral arrangements are created to accommodate an engaged couple’s (or any clients’) requests. Once a contract is signed, the couple meets with the design team to further develop the concept and prepare it for a finalization appointment called table preview. “This is something that sets us apart from other florists; we invite our clients into our showroom prior to their event date to see their tablescapes and fresh floral designs in person,” McKnight says. “This gives them the opportunity to modify any details if desired, so they are absolutely perfect on the wedding day.” McKnight’s team also delivers and sets up the floral and rental items they create. The special events company offers a variety of price points to accommodate different budgets and floral designs. Lately, ivory roses paired with baby’s breath is a common request for weddings, but McKnight says he’s also seeing flowers with an explosion of texture and color. “Our favorite aspect of designing weddings is that every couple is different,” he says, “We can design around their personalities and tie in special touches that are unique to each couple. We feel so fortunate to have incredible clients that put their trust in us to bring their visions to life.”

“I wanted to create a modern, Tulum-inspired bohemian style that incorporated a neutral color palette and layered textures,” says Aimee Paquin, owner and creative director at Modernly Events. “This all lent itself to feeling elevated but still casual. We layered a lot of different natural fibers and materials (wood, rattan, raffia, bamboo, grapewood/ driftwood, dried palm leaves, dried bunny tails)…then softened it with the floral selections and touches of velvet.”

ince acquiring ownership of Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth in 2021, the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation has led a $50 million renovation to add extravagant event spaces, a high-end golf course, and a wine bar to the venue, while also updating existing spaces, such as the private bridal suites, to tap into the modern luxury market. The resort, which was founded as the Saint John’s Provincial Seminary in 1948, hosts more than 250 weddings a year. One of the biggest draws is that it’s an all-in-one experience. Catholic weddings take place in the Saints Mary and Joseph Chapel, a Roman Catholic Chapel operated by the Archdiocese of Detroit. The chapel is designed in the Umbrian tradition and features wooden beams, Botticini marble statues, marble floors, and breathtaking mosaics. For non-Catholic ceremonies all other spaces are available. The most popular is the newly opened Garden

Pavilion, featuring glass NanoWalls that open to create an indoor/outdoor experience. Currently, four ballrooms accommodate different party sizes, including the Mosaic, Provincial, Atrium, and Grand Ballroom, all of which feature 20-to-30-foot ceilings. These spaces have been given a head-to-toe makeover, with new crystal chandeliers, carpet, heavy drapery, and shimmery wallpaper. The Mosaic and Provincial can seat 150 guests while the Atrium can seat up to 325; the Grand Ballroom, a 6,800 square foot space, can host weddings with as many as 430 guests. The Monarch ballroom will open by 2025 and be the largest event space at the resort. At 17,000-square-feet, up to 900 wedding guests will have available seating. “The details in this room are going to be unbelievable,” says Fadi Sibani, director of sales and marketing. “This is going to be one of the most amazing ballrooms in all of Michigan.” It will feature glass skylights and a 200-foot glass wall that opens to a 7,000-square-foot courtyard. The ballroom is part of a three-story structure, with a cocktail hour space available on the second floor and another event space on the third. Once everyone is ready for pictures, any location across the resort is considered a photogenic backdrop, especially the Waterfall Garden, which looks magical year-round with fall leaves, winter flurries, or summer rays. At the end of the night, 118 guest rooms are available for overnight stays, including four luxury rooms, such as the two lofted presidential suites, both featuring a deep soaking tub that overlooks the golf course. With so much to enjoy, guests can expect a top-quality experience not found elsewhere in metro Detroit. “Saint John’s Resort is southeast Michigan’s only luxury resort,” Sibani said. “Our tagline is Detroit’s Destination Resort.”

Golf and the Grotto I

n April, guests (and the public) will have the opportunity to put their golfing skills to the test when The Cardinal at Saint John’s 18-hole, par 72 golf course opens, becoming the first high-end public golf course to open in metro Detroit in 20 years. There is also a par 3 short-course, inspired by architect Ray Hearn’s time in the British Isles and a 1.6-acre natural grass putting course which shares similarities to the Himalayas course at St. Andrews in Scotland. Those who want to keep the night going can stop by the Wine Grotto, which opened last September and offers a cozy and casual bar experience. The menu of flatbreads, shareables, and desserts is listed with a suggested wine pairing, like the wagyu meatballs with burrata and warm focaccia to be enjoyed with the Sirius Bordeaux rouge — a red French wine. “It’s a great place to grab a glass of wine and enjoy different types of cuisines,” says Sibani, mentioning that there are designated spaces within the bar where couples can hold wedding rehearsals.

ying 30 miles off the bustling city of Charlevoix and reached either by ferry or air, Beaver Island is about as tranquil as you can imagine. You want a retreat to escape to? At 13 miles long by six miles wide, the largest island in Lake Michigan ranks among my favorites. There’s a small town center called St. James, hearkening to when this retreat was a Mormon enclave in the 1800s. The community declared itself independent from the U.S. and even had a king. Remnants of that period are still evident. There’s a market, a hardware, and eight restaurants near where the ferry from Charlevoix lands each day in summer. The place to truly relax, with dining included, is at the Beaver Island Lodge. It’s about a half-mile walk from downtown St. James on the north end overlooking Garden Island, two miles across the water. Eric Hodgson, who has owned the lodge for about 11 years, also owns four of the island’s eateries. “We bought it because, at the time, the previous owner was probably going to close after the Great Recession,” Hodgson says. “My wife, Dana, and I got involved because it was one of our favorites. We like to go out for dinner and we just couldn’t imagine the island without it.” Built in the early 1950s, there are now 14 rooms and a cabin that can comfortably sleep 32. Dinner is served nightly, and there’s a full bar. The lodge originally was a hunting and fishing retreat, and like the entire island, it has a decidedly outdoorsy lean. There are great birding opportunities on Beaver Island because it’s a critical layover for migratory birds including raptors, warblers, and thrushes, many of which nest on the island. The Beaver Island Birding Trail is recognized by Michigan Audubon and encompasses more than 12,000 acres, including four preserves of the Little Traverse Conservancy.

Beaver Island also has its own kayaking trail, if you’ve brought yours, or you can hitch a ride with Happy Paddle rentals and sign up for a tour. Want to try a different type of trail? Bicycles are one of the best ways to travel here, so bring your mountain bike and check out the island’s 100 miles of trails or, if you prefer, just stay on its roads. If fishing’s your thing, contact Kevin Morlock of Indigo Guide Service, who frequents the island’s rocky

“flats,” as well as nearby Hog and Garden islands after smallmouth bass and northern pike. When it comes to stargazing, Beaver Island is one of the darkest spots in Lake Michigan, and perfect for amateur astronomers. The island association has filed an application with the international Dark Skies Association to recognize about one-third of its space as a Dark Sky Sanctuary.

his Lake Superior island is amazing for those who love to get away when camping. Located about a half-mile offshore from Munising in the Upper Peninsula, the Grand Island National Recreation Area is a quintessential island retreat. You’ll take a pontoon-like boat from the Grand Island Landing Ferry Service, located about 2.5 miles west of Munising. The 49-square-mile island, part of the Hiawatha National Forest, features some of the same rock formations as the nearby Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It’s open for biking, hiking, and primitive camping (reservations are required). “On the island, you feel completely disconnected from your day-to-day life, while only being a short distance from the mainland,” says backpacker Grant Garbinski, who spent several days last summer camping and hiking around the island’s 30-plus-mile perimeter. “The circular nature of the coastal trail system rewards backpackers, campers, hikers, and non-motorized bikers with a start-to-finish trail experience that gives a real feeling of accomplishment. Some mountain bikers I encountered did the loop several times. “Camping on the northern side of the island was my favorite spot,” he adds. “The sites there provide for an off-the-grid feeling and there are incredible cliffside views of Lake Superior. The eagle sightings and the bluffs are amazing. The sounds of the Superior waves at night were unbelievable. Both the sunrises and the sunsets from the island’s northern vantage point are must-sees for anyone spending the night on this beautiful escape. With all the beauty around you, be sure to plan ahead to locate the best views.” There are some 40 miles of trails for bikers, and you can rent a bike at the ferry landing. There are also two rental cabins, in addition to more than 20 designated campsites. Your only companions will be fellow campers, the island’s black bears, and other four-footed critters. If the experience of nature up-close in a tent and miles from the nearest fast-food stop or car is what you’re yearning for, Grand Island may be the place for you.

ocated in northern Lake Huron, the island just south of Mackinac Island also rates as a great getaway sanctuary. I recommend the Hideaway at Bois Blanc Island Bed & Breakfast. Visitors can reach it via a 45-minute ferry ride from Cheboygan or by air from St. Ignace, Charlevoix, or Cheboygan. “Everybody knows it as just The Hideaway,” says Adam Bronkema, who with his wife, Tammy Murphy, has owned this nine-room B&B since 2021. Breakfast is served in the dining room, on the back deck, or delivered to your room so you can dine there or take it to the beach. Bronkema also offers pick-up and dropoff service from the dock or airport, if you don’t want to ferry your own vehicle. The Hideaway sits on 26 acres with a 600-foot sand and fine rock beach, and offers kayak and ATV rentals. Two lakes on this six-mile-wide by 12-mile-long island permit dock fishing. The Outpost restaurant, four miles from the island’s airport, serves lunch and dinner. The Island Tavern serves lunch on weekends and opens at 3 p.m. during the week. Overnighters can book a flight from the Bois Blanc airport to Mackinac Island to fill up on fudge. “Our island’s biggest draw is just the quiet, peaceful atmosphere. It’s a respite. We’re the farthest extreme from Mackinac Island that you can be. You can bike almost all the way around the island,” Bronkema says.

WITH THE OWNERS OF MAJDA DIAMOND VAULT What was your inspiration for starting Majda Diamond Vault? A I realized early on that I have a passion for jewelry. It has always been a hobby of mine to collect fine pieces, whether they be bracelets, necklaces or earrings. I’ve always been fascinated by the way fine jewels are created and the impact they have, from the very beginning stages of development to the confidence it brings when a finished look is brought together. As a family-owned and operated business, what role does your family play in inspiring your work? A My late father was a clothier in his previous country, where he imported and traded fine fabrics used for custom clothing. He was my biggest inspiration, inspiring me to be independent, honest and trustworthy in my dayto-day life. My husband Kevin, my daughter Marie and twins Dominic and Catherine also play a major role in the reason I am here today. We all participate in working together as a team. What makes your jewelry collections unique? A All the pieces in my collection are hand-picked by me. I travel to places all over the country to make sure I have something special to offer to all my clients. Nobody that walks into my shop fails to find at least one piece they absolutely fall in love with, and it brings me so much joy when my clients tell me that my pieces are exquisite and like none other!

international relations MARCH 21, 1953. THIS PHOTO of the marriage of Windsor resident Jovan Urosevic to Detroit resident Evangeline Karsai was front page news in the Free Press on March 22, 1953. The couple were married by Judge O.Z. Ide at the Ambassador Bridge’s boundary line. The newspaper reported that they could not wed in their respective countries due to Urosevic’s pending visa and Karsai’s complicated Canadian divorce years prior. In a three-minute ceremony they leaned over the line separating Canada and the United States and sealed their marriage with a kiss.
