"A s'mores bar! Trying to eat it with class while dressed up was quite the chore, but well worth the finger-licking goodness."
—Lindsay Richards, Creative Director
"Detroit BBQ Company! Our friend, a chef, chose to have his buddy cater his wedding with a BBQ food truck. It was epic and they put out to-go containers so we could take home some porky goodness. I was a happy wedding guest."
"The most memorable food I’ve had was buffetstyle BBQ food It brings me comfort and I’m never not hungry when leaving a wedding. The mac and cheese is always my favorite dish when it comes to BBQ!"

"Out of all the weddings I've attended, the most iconic food items that I can remember having were coney dogs at my best friend's wedding. She served them midway through as a late-night snack."
—Luanne Lim, Senior Digital Development Specialist
"I had mashed potatoes wrapped in a puff pastry It was incredible!"
—Helena Hill, Advertising Coordinator"This bride and groom had a whole separate room off the main reception hall that opened after dinner. FROM HELPING his mother bake and decorate cakes in his childhood home to now running a wildly successful business, Lincoln Alexander is making his mark on the cake industry. His business, Flour House Cakes & Co., opened in 2018 and was named one of the top bakeries in the Midwest by WeddingDay magazine. He’s been featured in Essence magazine and other publications, baked for celebrity clientele, his creations have appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and he’s a season one winner of Disney’s Foodtastic on Disney+.

Alexander has earned five degrees in business, education and public health, including a doctorate degree in public health — and taught as a public health professor while raising a family. Aside from “caking,” he is also a university dean of health sciences. Throughout his career, he kept his cake-making passion alive.
written by anna traverAlexander received much of his inspiration and talent from his mother, who ran her own small cake business out of his childhood home. He grew up watching his mother bake from the kitchen floor, admiring her ability to memorize all sorts of recipes passed down in the family through generations. As he got older, he started helping her in the kitchen. He enjoyed it and discovered he had a natural talent for creating and decorating. “Unbeknown to me, this childhood admiration would influence my creativity in the culinary arts as a young
“I wanted to attend culinary arts school and bake as my profession, but my parents encouraged me to go to college for a business degree,” Alexander says. “Thankfully, I listened, because I learned so much from my studies that has helped me with successfully running my business today.”

Hayes swears by this jojoba and argan oil-infused product, saying it gives a “nice little extra definition” to her microbladed brows. “I like all of my makeup to be very simple and effortless these days,” Hayes says, which falls right in line with The Lip Bar’s “maximum impact, minimal effort” ethos. “I have been using their products in my kit for a long time.” $10, at The Lip Bar, 1435 Farmer St., Detroit, 313-952-5198; thelipbar.com
“I’m completely obsessed with this ultra-dewy, radiant tinted moisturizer,” Hayes says. “Not only does this sheer-coverage tint give the skin an amazing glow, but it also has skincare ingredients such as plant-based squalane and niacinamide to [smoothen] skin texture and improve elasticity.” The multi-tasking product has racked up 14 awards over the past three years. It has been named Best Blue Light Sunscreen by Health.com Best Complexion Product by Editorialist, and Best Clean Foundation by both Allure and Glamour to name a few. $48 at Ilia; iliabeauty.com
LOCAL MAKEUP ARTIST JESSICA HAYES SHARES HER VEGAN AND CRUELTY-FREE BEAUTY MUST-HAVES
written by rachael thomas | photography by gerard + belevender styled by giuseppa
nadrowskiVEGAN AND CRUELTY-FREE products have become a norm within the beauty industry, coming in forms ranging moisturizers and concealers to eyeshadows and lipsticks — but that wasn’t always the case, says makeup artist and eyebrow specialist Jessica Hayes. The Australia-born, Ferndale-based beauty expert — who goes by Jessica Haze professionally — began her career in the makeup industry in 2005. She started off in bridal and event makeup, using products containing animal ingredients. Hayes made the transition to using only vegan and cruelty-free products on her clients (and herself) around eight years ago. She now focuses on providing her services for fashion shows and editorial photoshoots. Locally, folks can book an appointment at Hayes’ microblading studio in Pleasant Ridge, and she also does brow shaping and laminating at Todd’s Room in Birmingham. Here, the beauty guru shares some of her favorite products that she uses in her own daily regimen.
Follow Hayes on Instagram (@jessicahazemua), and learn more about her microblading services at jessicahaze.com.
“This is my absolute ride-or-die mascara,” Hayes says. “It creates really big, fluffy lashes, but the best thing about it is that it’s refillable.” Indeed, its eco-friendliness makes this product a standout; the mascara refill is made with 100-percent post-consumer recycled plastic, and Mob Beauty claims it uses 75 percent less packaging material than the industry standard mascara. $24+, at Mob Beauty; mobbeauty.com
Before bedtime, apply a couple of drops of this Hayesapproved, soothing night oil. “It’s a sleeping retinol oil that helps calm redness, even skin tone, and leave your skin brighter and more radiant,” she says. Some of Luna’s key ingredients include trans-retinol, avocado and chia seed oils, and cape chamomile essential oil. $55+, at Sunday Riley; sundayriley.com
Products that do double-duty as both a lipstick and blush have risen to popularity in recent years, and this item from Freck Beauty — which is infused with liquid plant collagen — is one Hayes recommends adding to your beauty lineup. “Another effortless product; I often reach for liquid and cream cheek products for a multidimensional glow from within,” Hayes says. “[You can] create a sheer tint of color or a big pop, depending on your mood.” $22+, at Freck Beauty; freckbeauty.com
Jessica Hayes collaborated with Mob Beauty to create a matte lipstick, five shades of cream eyeshadow, a cream blush, and a powder eyeliner. Working with the brand’s co-founder Victor Casale (the former chief chemist and managing director of MAC Cosmetics) and his team, Hayes developed the products at the brand’s lab in Palm Springs, California. The lipstick, eyeshadow, and blush launched in late December at mobbeauty.com, and the eyeliner will be available at a later date.

WITH LEWIS JEWELERS YOU CAN HELP DESIGN SUSTAINABLE CUSTOM WEDDING RINGS TO LAST A LIFETIME.
written by jordan jewellFOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS, Lewis Jewelers has been supplying customers with unique, quality pieces from the ever-evolving styles of necklaces and earrings to customized rings for brides and grooms. And in 2008, far ahead of the trend, the family-owned-and operated business shifted toward more eco-friendly, sustainable practices.
“We work with some of the top designer brands in the business as well as creating a lot of our own custom pieces,” custom design specialist and creative adviser Keith Largin says. “We’re ethically sourcing our materials so that everything regenerates and recycles into something new.”
During the 2008 recession, the team at Lewis Jewelers was met with the need to advance their jewelry-making practices. As gold prices went up, the business was flooded with articles and information stating that the metal could run out over the next decade due to overconsumption and issues within the world market. “We had to look inward and figure out how to adapt to the changing climate,” Largin says.
Jewelry making has long been known as an ethically questionable business. Strip mines have been used to tear up land in search of precious metals, toxic chemicals like arsenic have been released in the pursuit of gemstones and diamonds, and the process of mining can release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. These factors led to the Ann Arbor-based shop to push toward using sustainable, ethically sourced materials. When it comes to creating wedding rings, Largin says these timeless pieces can only grow more valuable with the use of sustainable practices.
“We want our clients to know what is going into their rings and other items,”
Largin says. “The response to our ecofriendly creations has been nothing but positive. With the younger crowd, words like sustainability are a common part of their vocabulary. You can tell they are passionate about being stewards for the Earth and treating it with respect.”
According to Largin, metals like gold and silver can be easily recycled. Lewis purchases used gold and silver and sends it to Stuller Fine Jewelry in Lafayette, Louisiana, where it is melted down,

With a team of six in-house designers, Lewis Jewelers helps their brides and grooms customize their perfect ring.
2 Starting from scratch, the designer and their client will meet to use a computer-aided design program to layout all of the elements of the ring.
3 From there, they create a 3D print in wax to give the client an idea of the look and feel of the ring. They are able to try the ring on, play with it in their hands, and make sure that it is a piece they love.
4 The design is approved, and the designers take it to cast. Using recycled metals that are ethically sourced, the cast is filled with the desired materials.
5 Once the cast is completed, the designers work to buff and polish the ring to make it shine. Custom design specialist and creative adviser Keith Largin notes that he has seen a push towards more rugged, scuffed up looking rings for grooms, creating a more lived-in feel.
6 The ring is now complete and ready for sale.
made into blocks, and sent back to the shop where it can be used to create a new piece.
“We have the option for clients to create a ring completely from scratch,” Largin says. “They get to see exactly how the ring will look, what it will feel like, and how it will fit. Most importantly, we want them to have a ring that they can wear forever and feel good about the practices that went into creating it before they say ‘I do.’
take their space to the next level with custom neon, acrylic, and wooden signs, as well as props like arches, swings, and even a champagne wall. Detroit Flower Wall’s offerings are available to purchase and customize or to rent.

FLOWERS CAN enhance any space, sure. But for Larissa Carlton, co-founder of design company Detroit Flower Wall, it’s about more than depositing bunches of bouquets around a space — it’s about helping clients achieve the events of their dreams and improving a business’s customer experience, through the power of interior design.
Founded by Carlton and her brother, Terrell Carlton, in 2018, Detroit Flower Wall specializes in luxury flower wall installations and signage for events and businesses. From decor for birthdays, baby showers, seminars, and weddings to vinyl installations and logos for beauty studios, clothing stores, and other companies, the Detroit Flower Wall team a tight-knit 11-person crew consisting of Carlton and her brother, who assists with client consultations and building, along with their mother, their cousins, and some friends — can do it all.
“I look forward to the opportunity to create the space for individuals and young business owners to shine,” Carlton says.
Real and silk flowers are used to adorn the lavish walls, which take around three weeks to build and can stand as tall as 8 feet high and 16 feet wide. Clients can
Creating installations that attract potential customers to a business and amplify its digital presence — since the right picture-perfect setup can make a company go viral on Instagram, TikTok, or another social medium — is key for Carlton. It’s also her goal to help local Black-owned businesses gain that traffic and cultivate engaging experiences, since these companies historically start off with less capital than their white-owned counterparts, and 57 percent of Black-owned companies across the country were considered “at risk” or “distressed” even before the pandemic. “What is important to me, being a designer of spaces, is to create aesthetically pleasing marketing,” Carlton says. “Everyone’s showing where they’re eating; everyone’s showing what they’re doing. So, my goal is to help businesses in the Detroit area allow their space to market itself on these platforms and allow the community to come inside their businesses based off the look and aesthetic.”
Prior to co-founding Detroit Flower Wall, Carlton would create props and decor for luncheons, parties, and women’s empowerment events as a side hustle, while working full-time as a recreational therapist. The Ypsilanti native never imagined leaving her career in the health industry and turning her event props gig into a full-time job — let alone a six-figure business — but Detroit Flower Wall has served more than 400 clients across metro Detroit and Ohio, including The Lip Bar, For the Love of Sugar, the Detroit Athletic Club, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Grammy Awardwinning gospel singer and native Detroiter Karen Clark Sheard.
“The goal has transformed from just putting up flower walls into really allowing interior design to become a big part of Detroit, as a Black designer,” Carlton says. “We really look forward to the opportunity to connect with local business owners and do even more big events in Detroit.”

One of the greatest determiners of your happiness is the person you choose to marry. This magical, spiritual, and lovefilled choice of a forever partner should be reflected in your wedding ceremony.
This means that the person who conducts your wedding — who sets the tone, who provides caring oversight to the cadence of the flow, who officiates your ceremony — is of prime importance.
Rev. Chris Yaw, ThM, MDiv, is passionate about bringing couples together in Christian marriage. In his 20 years of ordained ministry, he’s celebrated dozens of weddings domestically and internationally. “I find few things as satisfying as bringing calm to a stressful day, and allowing the peace and joy of Christ to shine through two lovely people, enjoyed and celebrated,” he says.

With a rather unconventional start more than 100 years ago, the stunning lakestone structures that are now called Castle Farms have brought many visions to life as the decades have passed. “We kept all of the imperfections along with all of the beauty,” explains general manager James Dannecker, as he points out the white subway tile, high ceilings, and other original features in the restored Detroit Foundation Hotel. Located
across from Huntington Place (formerly Cobo Hall), the 100room boutique-style hotel opened in 2017 out of two historic Detroit buildings: the Detroit Fire Department headquarters, built in 1929, and the Pontchartrain Wine Cellars, which dates back to the late 19th century.
Where possible, the design team reused original architectural features. Where it wasn’t, they sourced vintage elements from other Detroit locations, Dannecker explains.
“Our goal was to lean into the city’s renaissance and rebuild Detroit with Detroit.” The rooms feature beds with
Near Grand Circus Park in the formerly abandoned Wurlitzer Building, where musical instruments were once made and sold, stands The Siren, a newish (2018) hotel inspired by the city’s Old World lodgings. The 1926 Italian Renaissance-style building stood empty for decades before it
was purchased in 2015 and renovated into the 106-room hotel with five food and beverage spaces, two retail shops, and more. Look up when you enter the lobby, and you’ll see an exposed and faded original ceiling fragment, an atmospheric nod to the building’s history and one that also inspired the hotel’s color palette.
Unabashedly romantic, the moody lobby also includes gilded mirrors, a reclaimed disco ball, and French-inspired antiques, including a canopied and painted bed. Walk through the beaded curtain at the back, and you’ll find Candy Bar, a tiny pink palace of a watering hole capped by a vintage Murano glass chandelier found in Paris. Farther back is Albena, an eight-seat chef’s table that serves two seven-course meals daily,
and the entrance to Sid Gold’s Request Room, a hidden piano bar open Wednesday through Saturday. It will also be home to a new rooftop bar, which is expected to open this summer.
“Every room is different,” assistant general manager Ash Haque says of the accommodations, and many sport views of surrounding structures such as Comerica Park and the Detroit Athletic Club. “They’re not big and grand — more cozy and chic,” he explains. Suites have loft-style layouts and circular staircases with velvet sofas, tables, and eagle’s-eye views of the surrounding cityscape. Book the penthouse suite, and you’ll enjoy floor-to-ceiling windows, your own dining room, and a second-floor bedroom. Rooms start at $229.

reclaimed wood headboards and wallpaper depicting local landmarks, custom designed by Detroit Wallpaper Co. Inroom snacks include Germack nuts and other Michigan products. Guests looking to catch up on some reading will also find copies of Detroit: The Dream Is Now by Michel

the building when it comes time for dinner. The first-floor Apparatus Room, once a storage site for fire equipment (the name is original), is today one of the city’s most acclaimed restaurants. Room rates start at $279.

Request a Gallery King junior suite at the eight-story Shinola Hotel, and you’ll be treated to a space with seven huge, almost floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over Woodward Avenue. Depending on the room’s location, views range from the new skyscraper rising from the former Hudson’s site to the
Guardian and Penobscot buildings, or even Campus Martius Park in the distance.
When you’re able to tear yourself away from ogling the vintage facades around and below you, press a button that whisks the shades shut. Only then can you appreciate the room’s interior, decorated with subtle blond furniture and a contemporary palette of black, white, and tan. The same restful hues are echoed in furnishings, including the king-size bed and velvet sofa, as well as the oversize bathroom, stocked with high-end toiletries and a boxer-style hooded robe with “Detroit” emblazoned on the back. Thoughtful extras include a Shinola blanket, a sleep machine tucked in a bedside drawer, and a “You Look Beautiful” card in the vanity drawer.
The hotel, the flagship of the ever-expanding Detroit-based brand, opened in 2019 with 129 rooms in a collection of historic buildings on the corner of Woodward and Grand River, once home to the T.B. Rayl Co. department store and Singer sewing machine company. Room sizes vary, but all include the same carefully curated furnishings and Detroit-centric amenities. If you’re looking to splurge, consider The Canfield suite, which includes a separate dining area and a living room gas fireplace. In the evening, relax in one of the public areas filled with Motown art or dine in one of the on-site restaurants, such as San Morello, which serves up southern Italian cuisine. Rooms start at $235.

Leaded-glass windows frame the entrance to this venerable structure built in 1891 to house Detroit’s oldest club.
Inside, elegantly restored public rooms on the first floor offer a taste of what the city would have been like in the late 19th century. “They don’t build like this anymore,” says sales and marketing manager Matthew Laurinec,
Huge red lips mark the door to the Rolling Stones Suite at Corktown’s 144-room Trumbull & Porter Hotel. Located a little farther out of town, this onetime Holiday Inn hosted the iconic band in 1964, when they played at Olympia Stadium. The Detroit Free Press detailed the band’s stay, noting that the general manager at the time had to call the police to help manage crowds.
The two-room first-floor suite is the hotel’s largest and most popular, with a king-size bed, a separate sitting area,
and its own mini-kitchen. It’s decorated with Stones-inspired murals and memorabilia, including photos, album covers, newspaper clippings, and even a vintage guitar. You can even spin a few tunes on the in-room record player. All rooms feature locally sourced furniture, textiles, and design; romantic king suites with whirlpool feature in-room Jacuzzis.
While you won’t get penthouse views from this four-story hotel, you can see the Penobscot and the Renaissance Center in the distance from Trumbull-facing rooms. Two blocks from where Tiger Stadium stood,
the sleek urban space includes custom-made furniture by Detroit artisans and works by city-centric artists. Walk into the lobby, and you’ll find poetry by local David Blair emblazoned on a large wall, as well as plants, books, old Burroughs adding machines, and the nearby Burroughs Lounge, where you can get pour-over coffee and baked goods. The hotel’s restaurant, Red Dunn Kitchen, is temporarily closed and is expected to reopen later this year. Rates start at $179 for a standard queen room.

whose goal is to share the architectural treasure with a wider audience.
The club opened its 21 rooms to the public after a complete renovation in 2018, he says (nonmember guests are required to purchase a $25 club pass, which entitles them to full membership privileges during their stay). The public areas and original 10 rooms were renovated, and
11 new luxury suites added, carved from second-floor spaces that once comprised a ballroom and conference area. Premium king suites are surprisingly spacious, and many offer in-room Jacuzzis or clawfoot tubs. One room has a nonworking fireplace that once occupied the ballroom; another has views of the Penobscot Building, the former Detroit Free Press
building, and the Guardian Building, as well as a private patio. “All are different, so you get a unique experience every time you stay,” Laurinec says. Enjoy a drink and live music in The Library cocktail bar, or dine at Bohemia, the on-site restaurant. For this happy couple, doing things their own way, on their budget, made their day that much more beautiful.
By Scott Atkinson | Photographs by Daphne Doerr PhotographyWhen Detroit-based photographer Brad Ziegler and Fox 2 Detroit news producer Rebecca Abramson planned their July 2022 wedding, they didn’t intend for it to be so idiosyncratic or for it to be the kind of thing that friends would later tell them they wished they could come to a second time. They just wanted it to be them.
In fact, they were determined. Rebecca jokingly shares how, at 42, she was the last of her close friends to get married. When the pandemic hit, she said she was going to wait it out.
“We decided to wait to get engaged because I’m like, I’m going to be a 40-something-year-old bride. I waited a long time for this,” Rebecca says, laughing. “When lockdown happened, I was just like, our engagement plans are on hold. I'm going to get the wedding like other people got like. We're not in any rush.”
It was worth the wait. From the venue to the dress — and the car and the cake and the suit to, oh, pretty much everything — their wedding simply encapsulated who they were as a couple.
One part of that was that it was very, very Detroit — even though it wasn’t supposed to be, at least not at first.
The two had taken several trips while dating to the Windsor wine country and wanted to show their friends the area they thought of as an undiscovered gem across the river for most Michiganders. But in 2022, there were still some pandemic restrictions that made crossing the border into Canada tough. It was time for plan B, a venue in downtown Detroit.
When Rebecca suggested the Roostertail, the site of her senior prom, Brad said, “‘You want to get married where you had your senior prom?’” Rebecca recounts. “And I said yeah, that’s fine with me.’”
“And from where I sat,” Brad says, “it was this historic place where massive artists would come and perform in the ’50s and ’60s and ’70s. There was some legacy there.”
From there, the Detroit-ness just continued to build.
Take the owner of Dandy Detroit, who made Brad a suit that from the outside looks stylish, but which contains a somewhat hidden bit of Brad’s personal flair — the faces of his favorite rock stars from the ’60s and ’70s lining the inside of the jacket.
There was also the car, a 1956 Oldsmobile Super 88 Rebecca found for rent in Clarkston, and the post-wedding photos. The owner of the car (the father of a friend, it serendipitously turned out) offered to chauffer them around while they took pictures in places all over the city that Brad, a Boston native, had seen “evolve” during his 20 years photographing the city.
“We always found a way to be a little different,” Brad says. “Lots of people rent classic cars, but not like that.”
There was also the dress Rebecca had had her eye on since she and Brad started dating (“all girls do it,” she says) which she bought in a shop in Birmingham, miraculously still on sale after waiting through the pandemic. She was able to get the floor sample at half price, and while it wasn’t the perfect fit, it allowed her to have alterations done that made the dress uniquely hers. It has an almost undetectable geometric design woven into the lace, and she made her own modifications as well, adding a rose gold belt to match her jewelry.
Then there was the guest list. They kept it fairly small — about 115 — mostly close friends and family. But there was one special guest they thought they’d give a try —Motown star Martha Reeves, whom Brad had connected with when photographing her Hour Detroit’s July 2021 cover.
At the reception, also at the Roostertail, “they played ‘Dancing in the Street’ to get the party started,” Rebecca says. “When they announced Martha… she comes out, gives Brad a little kiss, and all of a sudden there’s a conga line forming around us on the dance floor, and everyone comes out to dance with Martha. And I’m like, I feel like I’m in a romantic comedy right now!”
The wedding was so full and fun, the couple said they didn’t see much of each other while it was all going on. But it doesn’t seem to bother them.
“Well,” Brad says, “We have our whole lives.”

FRANCES M. DODGE TO JAMES B. JOHNSON JR., JULY 1, 1938
THE MARRIAGE of Frances Dodge, the eldest daughter of the late auto manufacturer, John Dodge, and Matilda Rausch Dodge (Wilson) to Jimmy Johnson was called the social event of the season. It was held at Meadow Brook Hall, the home of Matilda and Alfred Wilson, Frances’ stepfather. The bride’s gown was ice blue satin with a 4.5-yard train; the matching satin veil was held in place with a tiara decroated with seed pearls.
