HOW TWO OF DETROIT’S MOST ICONIC ART DECO SKYSCRAPERS BECAME PART OF THIS COUPLE’S ENGAGEMENT

WHEN PLANNING his proposal, Jacob Jones leveraged his unique position as a Detroit tour guide. On Jan. 27, 2023, he popped the question to his thengirlfriend Ally Rooker in the lobby of Detroit’s Fisher Building. He’s given tours there with Pure Detroit and the Albert Kahn Legacy Foundation for more than a decade. Rooker is a content creator on TikTok and Instagram.
Jones’s connections at the building secured him permission to set up luminary bags spelling out “Will You Marry Me?” on the third floor.
Inaccessible to the general public, its balconies overlook the lobby and offer
stunning views of the ceiling frescoes.
Unfortunately, a new security officer, unaware of the plan, barred Jones’s sister from entering to set up. Needing to pivot, she placed the bags in the first-floor lobby instead.
While they were out that night, Jones told his wife-to-be that he had to drop something off at the Fisher Theatre box office. Although Rooker says she had “a little suspicion” that Jones had something planned, her answer when he dropped to his knee was an enthusiastic “yes!”
That summer, the couple took engagement photos at another Art Deco icon: the Guardian Building downtown,
where Jones has also given tours. With permission from the building manager, they headed up to the roof to snap some pics.
“We had to climb a lot of stairs with the guy that had the keys,” Rooker says. “But once we got up there, it was fun. I’ve never seen that view before, so it was really cool.”
Says Jones, “For anyone who wants to get engaged or take photos at a cool space, my No. 1 tip is to befriend building managers and security guards because they quite literally hold the keys to the city.”
The couple married on Aug. 17, 2024, and rented out the Corktown restaurant Supergeil for their reception.

AFTER 22 YEARS as a premier space for lodging and events, the Royal Park Hotel was ready for a makeover. Located on the shore of Paint Creek in the heart of downtown Rochester, the English manor-style hotel recently received its first renovation since opening in 2004. “Stephanie and I work collaboratively on everything, but we start with a mood that we want to tune into,” Gray explains. “Each one is designed to enhance or shift a mood, so they’re based on aromatherapeutic principles.”

A BIRMINGHAM NATIVE’S CLEAN FRAGRANCE BRAND WILL HELP CULTIVATE THE ENERGY YOU WANT FOR YOUR WEDDING by will reaume
IT’S NO REVELATION that weddings can be stressful for everyone involved. But what if something as simple as your fragrance could make you feel more grounded and at ease for your big day?
Libby Gray hopes to answer that question with her brand, Cerato Fragrances. Gray, a graduate of Seaholm High School, co-founded the brand with her longtime college friend Stephanie
Diamond in February 2025. Cerato is named after a flower traditionally used in tinctures meant to awaken feelings of inner strength.
“The whole idea behind the brand is that we want people to tune into themselves and trust their intuition,” Gray says.
When creating a scent, Gray and Diamond build its profile around the emotions they want to evoke.
Inspired by her time in New York’s fashion scene — and her seven years working in The Estée Lauder Companies’s creative department —Gray wanted to introduce a narrative element to the fragrance world. In addition to her role as co-founder, Gray also serves as Cerato’s photographer, shooting exclusively on film.
“I wanted it to feel almost like a magazine in certain ways and have a visual language that felt really intimate,” Gray says.
Unlike many other fragrance brands, Cerato is committed to using clean ingredients, free of harmful toxins and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. So far, Cerato has released three distinct fragrances in travel-sized roller ball applicators, available through the brand’s website. The gender-neutral scents range from sandalwood and vanilla to more energizing combinations like bergamot and citrus. If you want to form your own profile, Gray recommends layering multiple scents to fit the occasion.
“It’s a beautiful way to create something of your own, and we encourage it,” Gray says. “My cousin who got married in Michigan used Sweet Venus and Peace Root and layered the two. We love it.”

A tree house resort in Virginia offers honeymooners a secluded Appalachian getaway

Having a room for two high up in the treetops in the middle of a forest is romantic enough. Add sustainably luxurious design, a killer view of a river gorge, and curated adventures in the woods, and you have the perfect honeymoon getaway.
The Lodge at Primland, Auberge Collection, in Meadows of Dan, Virginia, has infused this feeling into its new Mountain Top Tree Houses, inspired by the designs of tree house architect Alain Laurens, who designed Primland’s earlier tree houses. Like Laurens’s other work worldwide, these structures, crafted of choice regional woods (in this case, red cedar), place the occupant in the heart of wild nature.
As the name suggests, the structures perch on a mountaintop 2,700 feet above the Dan River Gorge, surrounded by a panorama of mountains, valley, and sky. Whether lounging on the deck or lazing in bed in front of floor-to-ceiling windows, you have a front-row seat to the glory of nature and weather: the colorful burst of autumn leaves, winter winds whistling through the pines, clouds gathering before a spring rainstorm. Combined with the remote location, the experience has a Swiss Family Robinson effect, though the Robinsons never had a breakfast basket delivered or a private wine tasting while soaking in the hot tub. Primland is also a playground for adventurers and nature lovers. Twenty miles of hiking trails wind through hardwood forests and up steep paths, culminating in broad views of the Southern Appalachians and Blue Ridge Parkway. ATV driving gets you there faster, crossing a few creeks along the way and ratcheting up the adrenaline factor. Meadows of Dan is also splendid country for horseback riding, leisurely hikes along the Dan River, and stargazing. The latter takes place in a silo-shaped observatory with powerful telescopes that reveal the cosmos in mind-blowing detail.
The Lodge includes luxury suites with private balconies and deep soaking tubs, as well as a spa.
Settling down to a fireside dinner feels earned after an active day, and Primland takes the dining ritual seriously. The main restaurant, Leatherflower, leans into the Southern milieu with such dishes as Mississippi grits with braised short rib and a creative riff on pork and beans. There’s also a strong cocktail program with an educational component, so you can learn about the local moonshine or the nuances of Blue Ridge bourbon while you sip Southern-inspired libations.
A Primland tradition worth honoring is the nightly s’mores roast at the lodge’s North Terrace. Claim an Adirondack chair and a roasting iron and get as messy as you’d like in the name of good, old-fashioned fun. REMEMBER THE wedding at the beginning of The Godfather? A 1975 ceremony in Grosse Pointe Woods drew inspiration from the film. According to an Associated Press report, a string ensemble played Nino Rota’s iconic theme just before the couple took their vows.
The 23-year-old bride, Nina Giacalone, is pictured with her groom, 22-year-old Joseph Tringale, whose father was the head of a local produce packaging company. Nina’s father was none other than Vito “Billy Jack” Giacalone, who served as capo in the notorious Detroit Partnership. Billy Jack passed away in 2012.
