“Cheers to the dream team that made my home dreams a reality!”

Meet Kayla (The Minted Grove)

Creative mom Kayla strikes a balance between designing a functional space where her family and her small business can both grow, while intentionally leaving some things “undone” so she can enjoy adding her own artistic magic. It’s the home of her dreams and will be her 3rd Eastbrook Home!

With the help of Eastbrook Homes she recently completed her magical experience with her Mayfair Home plan! Learn more about Kayla’s journey below.

How did you incorporate your family’s lifestyle?

With this being my 3rd Eastbrook home, I knew my basic needs when picking out the floorplan as well as the necessity to make the home multifunctional throughout. For example, I knew I wanted the master bedroom on the first floor, separated from my kids on the second floor. I knew I needed to customize the pantry, making it more functional for a large family. When it came to the mudroom, I knew I needed an area that could be utilized for a built-in desk for a homework workstation. I didn’t need a third stall garage, but I knew I needed extra space to allow my creative side to come back to play through my small business, @themintedgrove.

What does “Home” mean to you?

Home is where my heart is full, my hands are busy, and my soul is happy. Home is where my little ones run around with muddy feet, right after the floors were mopped, where there is always a chaotic symphony of laughter, messes, and love. It’s somewhere we are proud to invite friends to, yet also a cozy spot where we can whip up the latest slime at the kitchen table, well knowing it will get messy.

What was your Eastbrook Experience like?

Though this is my third Eastbrook home, this is my second building experience. Just like the first time through, it was smooth and painless. I did my research a few years back on builders in the area and confidently chose to build with Eastbrook due to their quality. As life changes, so do your needs and finances. I found peace in knowing I could yet again build with Eastbrook without needing to fork over all the money upfront because it is not like a traditional construction loan.

Interested in learning more about Eastbrook Homes? Our team is here to help answer your questions and build your dream into a reality!

Solar Cycle 25

Visitors to the Grand Haven Area were in for a rare treat this past year when they looked up at the night sky: The northern lights, rarely visible this far south, made more than one stunning appearance. If you didn’t see them yourself, you probably saw impressive amateur and professional photographs of them posted on social media.

“More information is available today with [mobile] apps, websites that share visibility forecasts, and sightings than ever before,” says Patrick Grubba, a member of the Michigan Aurora Chasers team. “Today’s evolving camera technologies from smartphones [and] digital and mirrorless cameras make it easier to capture the aurora.”

To see the aurora borealis, you need three things: 1) Patience, as the northern lights’ visibility is unpredictable and there’s no guarantee they’ll show. 2) Realistic expectations of what you’ll see with the naked eye versus what your camera may pick up or what you may see on social media. Your eye may catch a haze or soft color on the horizon, while a camera’s longer exposure settings may capture more colors. 3) Forecasting and location information. The Glendale app (aurora-alerts.uk), the Michigan Aurora Chasers’ Facebook page, and smartphone apps such as SpaceWeatherLive share information that is helpful in determining if the northern lights will be visible after dark in your area. Check the weather for clear skies and do your best to find dark public locations away from bright lights. If the aurora is strong enough, you will be able to photograph it at the following local spots: Grand Haven State Park, North Beach Park, and any inland area with dark skies and public access. (Tip: There will be more viewing opportunities in Michigan in 2025 and in more northern areas of Michigan in 2026.) Happy aurora chasing!

Seven Communities

GRAND HAVEN

The active beach town of Grand Haven makes an ideal getaway any time of year. Pristine beaches and clear waters set the stage for volleyball, surfing, swimming, fishing, and water sports. Walk along the beach (and boardwalk/ pier), take in the sunsets, and enjoy close-up views of the iconic red lighthouses.

Beyond the sand, enjoy scenic walking and biking trails leading into beautiful parks and nature areas. Stroll the boardwalk from the beach to the downtown area to discover a mix of popular dining spots and new shopping venues. Shop till you drop at the many oneof-a-kind locally owned boutiques, art galleries, and specialty stores. For adventure, sports, and exercise, hit the links on one of Grand Haven’s renowned golf courses. Navigate inland and

offshore waters for lake trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, perch, pike, coho/king salmon, and steelhead fishing. Kayakers and paddleboarders glide along calm inland lakes and channels.

In autumn, local trails, parks, and woodlands glow with bold golds, oranges, and vibrant reds. In winter, Grand Haven transforms into a wonderland with a sparkling downtown (with ice-free sidewalks thanks to the snowmelt system), snow-laden beaches, and icecovered lighthouses. Outdoor enthusiasts embrace winter hiking, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, fat-tire biking, and ice fishing.

SPRING LAKE

Spring Lake, with its water-related activities, small-town atmosphere, and access to nearby attractions, is the perfect setting for a relaxing yet

activity-filled vacation.

Village Manager Brady Selner describes the ambience as a “small-town vibe filled with great hospitality and a lot of outdoor activities.”

“Tanglefoot Park on the Grand River,” he adds, “is a destination with a park, splash pad, kayak rental and launch, and a rentable pavilion with full-service amenities and more.”

The downtown area exudes small-town charm with its quaint shops, cozy cafés, and delectable restaurants. Savor breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Village Baker, where all of the baked products are made in-house. Fuel Bar + Refuge, with its scratch kitchen and extensive cocktail menu, is also a local favorite.

For recreation, Spring Lake is home to a variety of parks, scenic bike paths, and walking trails. The 15-mile Lakeside Trail stretches along the water’s edge

and community. The Whistle Stop Playground is a fun, colorful trainthemed playground. Marv’s Bark Park is a fenced-in dog park with room for dogs of all sizes to roam and play. Mill Point Park has green spaces for picnics, playground equipment for family fun, and a boat launch.

FERRYSBURG

The tranquil community of Ferrysburg resides on the western shore of Lake Michigan and along the northern side of the Grand River with access to views, nature, and family activities.

Ottawa Sands County Park recently reopened after the completion of ecological restoration, access improvements, and new amenities. Enjoy views of restored dunes, a paved path around restored wetlands, a kayak launch, and connections to regional trails. Grand Haven Area

Pickleball enthusiasts will find four outdoor courts at Coast Guard Park and three indoor courts at Ferrysburg Community Church.

Coast Guard Park, a year-round recreational park, also serves as a trailhead for the North Ottawa Dunes, a 513-acre section of the Lake Michigan Coastal Greenway. The dunes feature wooded trails for hiking and, in winter, designated cross-country skiing paths. Kitchel Lindquist Hartger Dunes Preserve offers 115 acres of trails through protected dunes, forests, and wetlands.

Families enjoy Fire Barn Park, which features bike paths, a firefighter-themed playground, sports fields, and basketball courts. For a scenic bike ride, hop on the North Bank Trail, which connects Ferrysburg with nearby Spring Lake and Nunica.

For a classic beach day, head to North Beach Park for warm, sandy shores, panoramic lake Michigan views, a playground, a

sand volleyball court, picnic tables, and grills. Enjoy a casual breakfast or lunch at Pine Street Cafe, where favorites include omelets, eggs Benedict, and stuffed hash browns.

ALLENDALE

About 10 miles east of Lake Michigan is Allendale, which blends outdoor adventure, family-friendly activities, and cultural experiences.

This suburban town is home to Grand Valley State University, located along the Grand River.

GVSU’s Arboretum features diverse plant life and scenic trails. The university’s Art Museum holds the second-largest art collection in the state of Michigan. GVSU is also home to The Meadows Golf Course, which is open to the public.

The Allendale Community Park includes scenic trails, a reservable picnic shelter, a playground, and sports facilities.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Bass River Recreation Area resides along 3.5

miles of the Grand River. More than 10 miles of trails are open for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and winter sports.

Quench your thirst and appetite at 5 de Mayo Mexican Grill & Bar, which has indoor and outdoor seating, house-made margaritas,

and delicious cuisine. For a casual dinner after a busy day, try Main Street Pub, which serves burgers, chicken tenders, and other classic American entrées.

COOPERSVILLE

Rural Coopersville is the perfect

place to step back in time and unwind. Founded in the mid1800s as a forestry hub, the town expanded with a railroad depot stop and evolved into a thriving agricultural center.

Today, Coopersville’s walkable downtown is a designated Social District. Sip your favorite beverage while exploring historic storefronts filled with unique shops, local businesses, and inviting eateries.

Pocket Park offers a splash pad for kids to cool off, while WalkThrough Park downtown provides seating and a warming fire to unwind. In the summer, Music on Main fills the town with lively tunes.

Satisfy your taste buds at local favorites like Delly Belly Bakery, known for its legendary doughnuts and blueberry fritters, or Southside Bar and Grill, with its appetizing burgers and sandwiches. Coopersville Brewing Co. pairs its exceptional craft beers with a flavorful barbecue menu.

Explore Ottawa County’s Eastmanville Farm with its 1930s barn, historic cemetery, crop demonstrations, and hiking and equestrian trails. The Coopersville Farm Museum & Event Center showcases evolving farming life with craft shows, exhibits, and event venues.

Check out the Coopersville Car Show and Summerfest in August to experience a celebration of classic cars, live music, and family fun.

WEST OLIVE

West Olive reaches from the lakeshore to inland, rural West Michigan. With sandy beaches, lush woods, wetlands, and peaceful trails, West Olive offers outdoor adventure and relaxation.

Port Sheldon Natural Area’s 440 acres feature scenic trails, tranquil woods, wildlife ponds, and gently rolling terrain. Nearby Kirk Park spans 68 acres with nature trails and wooden stairways. Choose a stroll through wooded dunes for sweeping bluff views, or follow the path to a deck overlooking Lake Michigan’s shoreline. Both parks welcome off-leash dogs in designated areas.

If you’re a paddler, launch your kayak or canoe at Hemlock Crossing and glide along the calm waters of

the Pigeon River. This gentle river leads to Pigeon Lake and ultimately opens into Lake Michigan. Nearby, Hiawatha Forest provides a more secluded setting for hiking and cross-country skiing, with trails through towering pines.

Golfers enjoy Pigeon Creek Golf Course, a public course known for its well-kept greens and multiple tee options.

For American cuisine, Sandy Point Beach House is a local favorite known for its relaxed ambience, diverse menu, and beverages.

In fall and winter, West Olive’s bottomland and upland forests, old pine plantations, and riverbanks also offer hiking and cross-country skiing.

NUNICA

Nunica, a small, rural community in central Crockery Township, immerses visitors in nature and local flavor.

Just outside of town, Crockery Creek Natural Area covers 331 scenic acres along the Grand River and Crockery Creek. This diverse landscape includes 2 miles of trails for hiking and cross-country skiing. Discover habitats like floodplain forests, hardwoods, wet meadows, and buttonbush swamps. Wildlife sightings abound; keep an eye out for bald eagles, sandhill cranes, redheaded woodpeckers, river otters, and seasonal migratory birds.

For a quirky attraction to view from the road, Nunica’s very own Stonehenge replica offers a local take on the famous landmark. This roadside attraction is located on private property — no trespassing, please.

Crockery Creek Saloon serves up savory pizzas and crispy onion rings and is known for its “Creek Water,” a delicious but potent moonshine drink. Turk’s Tavern also delights with hearty Michigan fare and a whimsical, pig-themed menu.

For those seeking a rustic venue for weddings or special events, The Little Red Barn of Nunica is a unique option. Built in the 1920s, this beautifully preserved barn features original wooden floors, lofty timber ceilings, and rustic barnwood walls. It comfortably accommodates up to 200 guests, making it an unforgettable setting for any celebration.

A TREASURED RESOURCE DUNESCAPES: BEACHES +SAND DUNES

The Grand Haven Area’s sand dunes and preserves, part of Michigan’s unique freshwater dune system, are a treasured resource worth protecting from erosion, invasive species, and human impact. An intentional ecological approach to managing a dune system is crucial for preserving biodiversity, protecting shorelines, and sustaining local habitats.

“The public greatly values the work done to educate, protect, and preserve these natural, treasured resources,” says Eric Snyder, board member for the Kitchel Lindquist Hartger Dunes Preserve.

In the Grand Haven Area, dune resto-

ration projects focus on controlling invasive plants, such as spotted knapweed. Invasive plants disrupt natural dune succession by outcompeting native species of plants. Removing invasive plants allows native plants, such as Pitcher’s thistle, to provide food sources to birds, and American beachgrass to stabilize the dunes naturally with its deep root systems.

Controlled-access pathways and designated walking areas also help reduce trampling, minimizing erosion from foot traffic. In addition, “positive impact is made though public outreach, education, and conservation efforts,” Snyder says. Local

conservation groups work alongside volunteers to educate the public on the importance of dune health, organize cleanups, and implement sustainable landscaping techniques for nearby developments. These collaborative efforts protect the dunes for future generations and support the diverse ecosystems that depend on them.

When visiting the Grand Haven Area and exploring the stunning dune system that surrounds us, be sure to stay on designated trails and boardwalks to help preserve native plant species and avoid erosion.

LAKE M IC H IGAN

RIP CURRENTS

It’s not the ocean, but the currents in Lake Michigan can be so powerful at times that they can present a hazard to swimmers. Make sure you, your friends, and your family know how to handle yourselves if you get caught in a rip current. Some parks offer the flag warning system, but the best protection is being aware of the water conditions and knowledgeable about what to do in case of an emergency.

PICTURESQUE PROMENADE

Few landmarks in the Grand Haven Area are as iconic as the Grand Haven boardwalk, which marked its 40th anniversary last year. Since the beginning, the structure’s upkeep has been a community affair.

More than four decades ago, area residents first banded together to raise money to build the boardwalk. In 2009 and in 2024, the community came together again to raise funds for the repair and preservation of this treasured landmark, ensuring it could be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike for years to come. Last year, volunteers, organizations, and builders worked together to complete structural repairs funded by the local community.

Every year, thousands stroll along the 1.5-mile boardwalk, also known as the Lighthouse Connector Park, stretching from Chinook Pier to the South Pier. Along the way, walkers can take in breathtaking views of the lake and pause to sit on the benches and watch the boats parade past or catch a stunning sunset. Throughout its four-decade history, the boardwalk has also been the site of many events, such as summer concerts and art fairs, which have fostered a sense of community and celebration. Whether you’re a firsttime visitor or a longtime local, you’ll find connection, relaxation, and fun on this iconic landmark in Grand Haven. Don’t forget to take a selfie or two as you create lasting memories by the lake!

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

COME SAIL AWAY!

One of the best ways to experience the Grand Haven Area’s pristine and abundant waters is by boat.

For recreational water enthusiasts, the Grand Haven Area is a dream destination. Adventure-seekers can harness the wind and waves for sailing, kayaking, kiteboarding, and more on Lake Michigan.

When calm days and waters call your name, explore the region via kayak, canoe, fishing boat, cruise pontoon, or paddleboard. The Grand River Heritage Water Trail and Spring Lake are just the right environments for active relaxation surrounded by nature.

Grand Haven, Spring Lake, and Ferrysburg have a variety of marinas, docks, and water access points. With so many options, you’re just a splash away from your favorite water sport.

TRAVELING WITH A PET?

If you are, it’s important to seek accommodations with pet-friendly policies. Here’s a checklist of factors to consider when planning your visit.

1. Policies and requirements vary between hotel brands, as they do among privately owned or operated properties. Always check ahead with the individual hotel or property manager/owner to verify the pet policy.

2. Provide full disclosure and seek out prior approval. Unexpected animals are not necessarily welcome.

MAP LOCATION: 4

3. Find out if fees and deposits are required. Some hotels charge a nonrefundable pet deposit.

Others have a refundable deposit policy. Fees can differ, with some assessing a cost per pet, per night, versus a one-time rate for the stay.

4. While dogs may be permitted, it doesn’t mean other four-legged pets such as cats are just as welcome. Again, ask in advance.

6. Ask about pet-friendly amenities. Some hotels may provide doggie beds, feeding bowls, and designated pet runs on their grounds. Call the Visitors Center to learn about pet-friendly businesses: 616.842.4499.

5. Inquire about limitations and restrictions. Some establishments have a one- or two-pet limit per room and/or may have strict weight restrictions for each pet.
