“We really try to work with customers to help them understand what’s available,” Barck says. “The sooner they can do it financially, the better, because it’s going to save them money and energy in the long run.”

DTE also helps reduce up-front costs with rebates on equipment that has a long service life and low-interest financing available through Michigan Saves.

A smart investment

Heating season starts with smart planning Rebates for maintenance and upgrades can help businesses prepare before winter arrives.

As temperatures begin to drop, heating systems become some of the hardest-working equipment in any commercial building.

Preparing boilers, furnaces and HVAC systems before the heating season begins can improve reliability, reduce operating costs and help businesses avoid unexpected repairs when they need heat the most.

Routine maintenance is one of the simplest ways to keep heating equipment running efficiently. Annual tune-ups help boilers, furnaces and other equipment perform at their best.

“Keep up on oil changes, [and] your vehicle is going to last a lot longer and run a lot better,” says Mike Barck, program manager for DTE’s Energy Efficiency Program for Business. “It’s the same thing with boiler tune-ups, chiller tune-ups or whatever equipment you’re maintaining. It’s ensuring that your equipment

runs longer and more efficiently.”

DTE’s Energy Efficiency Program for Business offers rebates for qualifying tune-ups and other efficiency improvements, making preventive maintenance even more affordable.

Upgrade to save For businesses with aging equipment, the start of heating season is also a good time to evaluate whether replacement makes financial sense. While boilers and furnaces can last many years with proper care, older systems often consume more energy than today’s high-efficiency models.

Rather than waiting for equipment to fail, DTE works with customers to identify the right time to upgrade based on their needs and budget. Many businesses begin with

BankSupplies Inc., a 50-employee business in Saline, participated in DTE’s Small Business Program. A DTE energy advisor recommended the business install 23 smart thermostats, helping the company save $920 through rebates while reducing natural gas use by an estimated 582 Mcf annually.

The project also qualified for DTE’s long-life measure bonus, resulting in an additional $230 in rebates.

Whether it’s scheduling a tune-up, replacing aging equipment or planning a larger efficiency project, involving DTE early can help businesses maximize available rebates, reduce energy costs and develop a plan that delivers long-term value. The result is equipment that’s ready for winter and savings that continue long after the heating season ends.

Whether it’s a manufacturing plant, school, hospital or neighborhood business, DTE energy advisors work with customers and contractors to identify qualifying equipment and simplify the rebate process.

Smarter investments DTE offers rebates on a wide range of energy-efficient equipment, including lighting, HVAC systems, refrigeration and natural gas technologies. For new construction and major renovations, common gas-saving equipment includes high-efficiency boilers, furnaces, water heaters, boiler controls, energy recovery units and makeup air units.

Because every project is different, energy advisors work with customers to identify qualifying upgrades and estimate available incentives before purchases are made.

The process is simpler than customers expect. First, submit an application or reach out to the program about your project.

Provide your construction design documents, particularly the lighting, mechanical and plumbing schedules, as well as equipment submittals with technical specifications.

If all supporting documentation is complete, review and approval of the rebate application should take less than 30 days, and the rebate check will be mailed to you.

“We encourage customers to get back every dollar they are eligible to receive,” Anderson says. “We try to educate them that money is being left on the table if they aren’t submitting the [rebate] app.”

Riding toward efficiency DTE’s makeover contest helps a Michigan farm cast a favorable light on its show horses while decreasing energy use.

Multitasking comes with the territory at Tiffany Wendling’s Deckerville farm in Michigan’s Thumb, home to Tiffany’s Show Horses.

Tiffany Wendling entered DTE’s Small Business Energy Efficiency Makeover Contest while she was watering horses at her Deckerville farm, Tiffany’s Show Horses.

Horses operates year-round, requiring extensive lighting, heating and ventilation systems to keep horses comfortable and competition-ready through Michigan’s long winters.

When the busy owner noticed a flyer for DTE’s Small Business Energy Efficiency Makeover Contest in her mail one day while working in the barn, she whipped out her phone and completed the application on the spot.

The indoor arena measures approximately 66 by 120 feet, while the barn includes 20 stalls as well as wash areas, tack rooms, feed storage and other support spaces.

“I literally applied while I was watering horses,” Wendling says. “It took about 15 minutes.”

Winter energy costs average $700 per month for propane and another $600 for electricity.

That quick decision paid off. Tiffany’s Show Horses was selected as one of three winners in DTE’s 2025 contest, earning $5,000 in energyefficiency improvements, media coverage and a professional energy assessment to help identify opportunities for savings.

Wendling’s focus naturally turned to lighting efficiency, because for the horses, light serves a purpose beyond visibility.

For Wendling, whose operation includes a heated, climate-controlled boarding barn and indoor riding arena, energy costs are a source of concern.

So that the horses’ coats stay competition-ready, Wendling keeps extended daylight conditions inside the barn for up to 16 hours a day during winter months. The extra light helps the horses avoid getting shaggy, maintaining the sleek coats preferred for showing.

“It keeps the horses thinking it’s still daylight out,” she says. “The lighting plays a huge factor.”

Spotting opportunities As part of winning the contest, Tiffany’s Show Horses received a comprehensive energy assessment from a DTE energy advisor.

While the walk-through didn’t reveal any major surprises, it did confirm what Wendling suspected: Lighting upgrades were a priority.

The facility contains dozens of lights throughout the arena, stalls and barn areas. The energy advisor recommended converting older fixtures to highefficiency LED lighting.

“The [advisor] said I could spend all my money on the lighting,” Wendling says.

The assessment also helped prioritize future improvements, including potential upgrades to the farm’s aging ventilation system. Proper ventilation is critical in horse facilities, helping maintain healthy air quality by removing ammonia and bringing in fresh air. “[The energy assessment] helped me focus my efforts,” Wendling says.

Investing in the future Wendling plans to use much of the prize funding to accelerate LED lighting upgrades throughout the facility. She had already begun replacing some fixtures on her own, but the contest winnings will allow her to complete the project sooner.

By handling much of the installation work herself, she hopes to stretch her winnings even further and potentially invest in additional improvements around the farm.

The timing couldn’t be better. New 10

lighting is expected to be installed this fall, ensuring horses and riders can benefit during the winter season when indoor riding becomes essential.

Beyond reducing energy use, the upgrades are expected to create a brighter, safer and more welcoming environment.

“I think they are all going to love it with brighter aisleways and a brighter arena,” Wendling says of both the horses and humans.

Helping the environment and the bottom line Like many small-business owners, Wendling has felt the impact of rising operating costs in recent years. Higher energy expenses have made it more difficult to reinvest in facility improvements.

Wendling sees energy efficiency as a practical way to reduce expenses while supporting environmental goals.

“I care about the environment,” she says.

“Saving energy and being green is always a good thing.”

Any savings generated by the upgrades can be redirected toward other farm needs, from fencing repairs to facility maintenance and equipment replacement.

Today, she’s grateful for both the funding and the guidance she received through the process.

“It’s been great working with everyone from DTE,” Wendling says. “It was a great opportunity.”

Shopping for savings DTE customers enjoy instant discounts on energy-efficient equipment from participating distributors.

When it comes to purchasing energyefficient equipment, one of the most seamless ways to save is through DTE’s HVAC Instant Discount Program. Gas and electric customers can shop for ENERGY STAR®–certified HVAC equipment for their properties at discounted rates that are applied immediately at checkout — no application, no paperwork, no waiting.

“We work with the distributors to get them to issue this discount right at the point of sale,” explains Aaron Prince, a manager for the program.

Customers can search on the DTE website at dteenergy.com/discounts-hvac for participating distributors throughout Michigan and beyond. The database includes companies ranging from large national chains to locally owned operations. Alternatively, customers are welcome to contact a DTE advisor by phone or email for help getting started (see Toolbox).

Through the HVAC Instant Discount Program, distributors offer reduced prices on high-efficiency HVAC equipment that can help a business save energy, a crucial piece

of energy efficiency since HVAC systems tend to account for about 40% of energy consumption in commercial buildings.

Prince says that for gas customers, boilers and water heaters are among the most purchased products through the program.

For electric customers, it’s rooftop air conditioning units and industrial chillers.

Other popular items include, but are not limited to, ductless mini- and multisplit systems; water-source heat pumps; and high-volume, low-speed fans.

Customers can also find a list of available discounts associated with these products on DTE’s website. Instant discounts vary based on the type of product. For example, air-cooled chillers may be discounted up to $20 per ton; indirect water heaters are reduced $100 per unit; and highvolume, low-speed fans could qualify for up to $600 in savings. No extra steps are required on the part of business customers to receive the discounts; simply shop for HVAC equipment through a participating distributor.

Prince notes that if the discount is missed at the point of sale for any reason — say,

because a distributor is selling to a repeat customer in a less-formal way — those savings can still be passed on to the customer via credit.

The HVAC Instant Discount Program, like other efficiency initiatives, is fueled by DTE’s aim to help customers optimize and save. The program also helps distributors, making their products more appealing to business owners who need to be strategic about spending costs.

“We have a lot of distributors that have really embraced it within their own company,” Prince says. “The main goal is to cover the difference in cost between something standard and something more efficient that’s going to save [customers] more energy over time.”

Walking the walk Xperience spreads the word about DTE’s sustainability programs and leads by example with its own commitment.

Thousands of Michigan residents have learned about DTE’s sustainability programs from the friendly faces representing Xperience Communications at community events across the state. Xperience team members know what they’re talking about, because the Dearborn-based experiential marketing agency participates in DTE’s Natural Gas Balance and MIGreenPower programs itself.

Show and MLB All-Star Game and at local events such as the Detroit Grand Prix, Rocket Classic and numerous local festivals throughout Michigan.

For Xperience, participation in the programs was a natural extension of a business built on creating connections.

Whether introducing consumers to a new product, staffing festivals or helping companies engage customers face-to-face, the company believes making a positive impact extends beyond the events it produces. DTE’s turnkey programs help it do just that.

“We work with MIGreenPower at 15 to 20 events each year and [attend] several Natural Gas Balance events,” Francis says. “We find that some customers aren’t aware these programs exist, … while others have program awareness but do not know the details. After we talk with them, they’re usually excited to learn about the benefits.”

“We really found that both programs are easy and efficient ways to reduce our carbon footprint,” says Joe Francis, director at Xperience. “While we don’t have a sustainability coordinator or a formal sustainability plan, this was kind of a no-brainer.”

A clean vision Founded in 2000, Xperience works with major brands across the country, representing organizations at national events like the Super Bowl, National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) 14

Natural Gas Balance Natural Gas Balance gives residential and business natural gas customers an affordable way to balance some or all of their carbon footprint from their natural gas usage. Customers choose one of four impact levels, ranging from $4 to $14 per month, to balance between 25% and 100% of their natural gas emissions.

Residential customers and small businesses can enroll at any time with no contract, selecting a fixed monthly amount or a flexible participation level based on how much of their electricity they want to attribute to renewable energy. Midsize and larger organizations can work with DTE to develop renewable energy solutions that align with their sustainability goals.

As participation grows, so does investment in new renewable energy projects and the Michigan jobs that help build and operate them.

Xperience participates at the highest level, balancing 100% of its natural gas emissions.

According to Megan Tenev, program lead for Natural Gas Balance, participation supports environmental projects across Michigan, including preservation of more than 20,000 acres of forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula through sustainable forest management and the creation of renewable natural gas by capturing methane from landfills and wastewater treatment facilities in Michigan.

“Customers can choose the level of impact that best fits their goals and budget,” Tenev says. “They also receive regular updates on the projects they’re supporting and the impact they’re making, helping them stay connected to the difference their participation creates.”

For larger organizations with morecomplex energy needs, DTE also offers a custom Natural Gas Balance option designed around a business’s specific natural gas usage and emissions goals.

Bridget McDonald, owner and head coach of Kendo Gymnastics & Cheer, was introduced to the Energy Solutions program at a networking event. McDonald knows the cheer and gymnastics world well. She’s been a USA Gymnastics–certified coach for over 45 years, specializing in multiple disciplines.

McDonald started Kendo around 2012 with the idea that she’d offer private lessons via a mobile model. That didn’t quite work out, so she took a step away, and a few years later, she decided she needed a gym of her own.

After leasing a property, situated in a shopping plaza in Redford, in October 2025, McDonald invited an energy advisor to assess the space, still under construction.

She thinks it was an Ace Hardware and then a clothing store before she took it over.

“I had to get new lighting — I think it was mercury-based, which is terrible,” she explains. “And the heating had to change because it’s going to be totally open from floor to ceiling. I have about 21 feet from floor to ceiling, and I have approximately 9,200 square feet.”

Caile Richards, energy advocate for SBAM, visited the Kendo property to conduct a free energy assessment, the first step for any business customer looking to uncover areas where efficiency can be improved.

Like McDonald, he spotted opportunities for lighting and HVAC upgrades, most notably.

“But DTE also provides rebates for furnace tune-ups, so in the event they decide not to replace the furnace, there’s still an opportunity to do the maintenance that was probably deferred on those units,” Richards adds. “The program is excellent, and it’s easy to use, and the rebates always help customers get those projects done or those deferred maintenance items done at a lower cost.”

“Being able to install LEDs would not only provide them better light, last longer than the previous fluorescent lights, but also use less energy,” Richards says. “And then the cherry on top is that DTE offers rebates to help pay for those upgrades for our smallbusiness customers.”

He says Kendo has a rooftop HVAC system that, when they spoke, McDonald wasn’t sure whether she’d end up replacing.

If all goes according to plan, Kendo Gymnastics & Cheer will be open and hosting tumblers and flyers by the time you’re reading this, and McDonald foresees a continuing fruitful relationship with SBAM and DTE. She recommends that any new business move ahead with the free, no-strings-attached energy assessment.

“Caile brought up some things that I had not considered,” she says. “I really appreciated having him come in and say, ‘What about this? What about that?’

Being the owner of the gym, I’m also expecting that I’m going to be teaching, running this business. It’s a lot, and you can’t think of everything.”

Check before you choose Michiganders have a choice in natural gas suppliers — make an informed one.

If you are a DTE gas customer in Michigan, you have a choice when it comes to who supplies your natural gas. Through the Gas Customer Choice Program, you can opt to have your business’s natural gas supplied by DTE or by what’s known as an alternative gas supplier (AGS). Either way, DTE will continue to maintain the infrastructure that delivers gas to your business, respond to gas leaks, read meters and handle billing. If you’d like to keep DTE as your natural gas supplier, there’s nothing you need to do.

“If you don’t choose an AGS, DTE will continue to supply the gas under our regulated rate,” says Kenneth Savoie, principal marketing analyst at DTE. It’s important to note that within DTE’s service territory, only the natural gas rates offered by DTE are reviewed and regulated by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). Alternative gas suppliers are not regulated and can set their own rates.

If you are contacted by a salesperson about switching your natural gas supplier, DTE encourages you first to research which rate best aligns with your goals.

You can compare unregulated rates with DTE’s regulated rate at michigan.gov/ comparemigas. Your business may be approached by an AGS offering a rate that, at first glance, appears better than what you’re getting through DTE. If that rate is part of a time-limited promotion, however, it could change down the road. Promo pricing is especially popular during the summer months, when natural gas usage is low; operators may be in for sticker shock when the temperatures drop and gas usage increases.

If you are using an alternative gas supplier, DTE encourages you to check your bills regularly to stay on top of any changes.

“Never share your account number unless you’re sure you want to enroll with the alternative supplier,” Savoie says, noting that the account number is one piece of information an AGS needs to switch a customer’s service. To make sure your supplier hasn’t been switched inadvertently, Savoie recommends checking your bill. If your property’s natural gas is being supplied by an entity other than DTE, the name of that alternative supplier will be listed in the Summary of Charges section of your billing statement. Additionally, you’ll be able to see your rate compared with what you would be paying with DTE.

Here’s how to stay safe in the case of a natural gas leak.

Natural gas is a safe, reliable energy source, but it’s still important to know how to react in an emergency. Recognizing the signs of a leak and responding quickly can protect your employees, customers and business.

Here, Billy Staffen Jr., manager with DTE gas operations, answers five questions about the key warning signs to watch for and the steps to take if you suspect a natural gas leak.

How can a customer detect a possible natural gas leak?

Because natural gas is odorless, DTE adds a chemical called mercaptan to make leaks easier to detect. It has a strong, sulfurlike scent — like rotten eggs — which can alert you to danger. To ensure this odorant remains effective, DTE crews routinely collect and test samples using advanced equipment. These checks help make sure leaks can be recognized quickly and reliably.

What does a business customer need to do if they suspect a leak?

Your safety and the safety of those around you are always the top priority. If you notice any signs of a natural gas leak, evacuate the building immediately.

Make sure all customers and employees exit safely and calmly.

Leave doors open behind you to help the gas escape and reduce the risk of buildup.

Once you are outside and at a safe distance, call 911 right away. After that, contact DTE’s emergency natural gas leak hotline at 800.947.5000 or the hotline of your natural gas provider.

What should a customer not do if they suspect a leak?

As you leave, avoid using any electronics, light switches or phones, as even a small electrical spark could ignite natural gas if it’s present in the air, even in small amounts.

Never attempt to locate the source of the leak or make any repairs yourself. Leave that to the trained professionals, like us, who are equipped to handle the situation safely.

When a call comes in about a suspected leak, how do DTE crews respond?

Investing in safe, reliable energy DTE’s Gas Renewal Program is modernizing infrastructure for today’s businesses and tomorrow’s communities.

If you’ve noticed construction crews replacing natural gas lines or moving gas meters in your area, you’re likely seeing one of the largest infrastructure investments in DTE Gas history.

The Gas Renewal Program is a multiyear initiative to modernize Michigan’s natural gas delivery system by replacing aging cast-iron and steel pipelines with durable polyethylene pipes and moving indoor gas meters outside. The work helps ensure natural gas remains safe, reliable and affordable for the 1.4 million customers who depend on it every day.

“We’re more than halfway through a long-term program that began in 2011, and making strong, steady progress,” says Michael Fedele, director of DTE’s Gas Renewal Program. “The Gas Renewal Program is a multidecade effort to systematically replace aging pipeline infrastructure and move meters outside across our service territory.”

Modern upgrades, lasting benefits The work is also making a measurable environmental impact. By the time the program is complete, DTE will have upgraded approximately 4,000 miles of legacy natural gas pipes, reducing annual greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 500,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. That’s equal to the greenhouse gas emissions from 116,628 gasoline-powered vehicles or the energy use of 67,148 homes.

Replacing older infrastructure also helps reduce leaks and lowers the need for unplanned repairs, creating savings that help keep natural gas an efficient and affordable energy source.

“These upgrades provide meaningful, long-term benefits,” Fedele says. “First and foremost, they enhance safety by replacing older materials with modern, corrosion-resistant pipelines, reducing the risk of leaks and service interruptions.”

Outdoor gas meters provide additional safety and convenience. Because technicians no longer need to enter a building to inspect or maintain equipment, they can perform routine work more efficiently. In an emergency, the outdoor meters will allow first responders to shut off natural gas before entering a building.

What to expect during construction Work is happening throughout DTE’s gas service territory — from Detroit to communities across southeast and greater Michigan.

Scheduled for an upgrade? You will receive ongoing communications providing updates and information every step of the way. Before crews arrive, you may also notice utility flags and stakes marking underground infrastructure, and a contractor may ask to enter your property’s basement to locate the sewer line.

During the construction, crews will install new gas mains, upgrade service lines and relocate indoor meters outside. Most customers experience a brief interruption in natural gas service, typically two to three hours, while the new equipment is connected. Before leaving, technicians

Building for the future

Following construction, DTE will make repairs to anything affected by the work, such as sidewalks, driveways and lawns.

Restoration may occur in phases, with temporary repairs followed by permanent restoration when conditions allow.

The Gas Renewal Program’s work is required by the Michigan Public Service Commission and plays an important role in strengthening Michigan’s natural gas system.

DTE’s new online application portal for the Energy Efficiency Program for Business is designed to provide a faster, more intuitive experience for customers and contractors from start to finish.

“Based on repeated feedback from contractors and customers, we knew there was an opportunity to make the application process easier to navigate and more user-friendly,” says Joe Bickham, program manager for DTE’s Energy Efficiency Program for Business.

“The redesigned portal focuses on improving the way applications are completed, submitted and tracked, helping customers move their projects forward with greater confidence.”

“Customers can use the portal to apply for all eligible rebate opportunities, including prescriptive, custom and small-business projects,” Bickham says. “Applications can be submitted at any stage of a project — before work begins, while a project is underway or after completion — depending on the customer’s needs.

We encourage customers to submit reservations before work begins so we can help confirm eligibility and maximize available incentives.”

Getting started is easy. Customers should gather key project information, including the project scope, invoices or quotes, and contact information, then reach out to a DTE energy advisor. Advisors can help evaluate projects, explain available incentives and guide customers through the application process.

“Energy savings opportunities can look different for every business,” Bickham says. “Customers should not assume a project is ineligible simply because it is not specifically listed. We encourage businesses to discuss their energy-saving

ideas with our team so we can evaluate the opportunity, identify potential savings and explore available incentive options that may help move the project forward through the custom savings process.”

The portal also makes it easier for contractors to support customers.

Contractors can create their own accounts to submit, manage and track projects on behalf of businesses, and customers can view contractor-submitted applications through their own profiles.

“One of the biggest misconceptions is that applying for energy efficiency rebates is complicated,” Bickham says. “The new portal helps simplify the experience, and our energy advisors and support team are available to guide customers through every step.”
