A strong foundation DTE’s ability to combine smart purchasing with Michigan’s geological advantages allows it to deliver reliable gas year-round.

“Our strategy is designed to insulate customers from price spikes and ensure reliable and price-stable gas,” Moore says.

Michigan’s location provides an added edge.

Michigan’s natural gas advantage DTE leverages the state’s geology along with strategic purchasing to keep gas prices low and service reliable.

Michigan has a powerful advantage when it comes to buying and storing natural gas. The state’s underground rock formations allow DTE to cache massive volumes of natural gas safely and efficiently, helping to keep prices low and supply steady.

“Michigan’s unique geology allows us to store natural gas underground in naturally occurring rock formations,” says Sherri Moore, gas supply manager for DTE. “This local storage is the foundation of our ability to provide affordable, reliable energy to our customers.”

Rock-solid strategy DTE owns and operates four major storage reservoirs with more than 135 billion cubic feet of cyclable capacity. These natural reservoirs, which previously held oil and gas, are ideal for seasonal storage, allowing DTE to buy gas when it’s most affordable, typically from April through October, and hold it until customers need it most.

“We inject gas during low-demand months and withdraw it during high-demand months,” Moore explains. “That cycle

allows us to take advantage of pricing and abundant supply in the summer while ensuring there’s always enough supply during Michigan’s coldest days.”

In addition to purchasing more gas during the summer when prices tend to be lower, DTE also locks in prices for a portion of its supply up to three years in advance.

“DTE sources natural gas from a variety of suppliers across North America,” Moore says. “Our geography gives us access to multiple transmission pipelines, allowing us to tap into a broad supplier base and secure the most competitive prices available.”

Buying domestically also helps the company avoid tariffs.

DTE secures 75% of its natural gas supply at fixed prices, ensuring stability and predictability. The remaining 25% is kept flexible, allowing adjustments when demand shifts — scaling back during warmer weather or adding supply when needed. If demand rises above forecasts, additional gas is purchased a month in advance to keep customers covered.

“This diversified approach ensures reliability and price stability,” Moore says.

DTE has more than 135 Bcf of natural gas storage capacity

“By the time gas is delivered, over 75% of our supply is already secured at fixed prices,” Moore says.

“This helps us manage risk and provide stability for our customers.”

This two-pronged approach, combining forward purchasing with underground storage, helps DTE protect against price increases and stabilize the Gas Cost Recovery charge. Most importantly, it is a simple and effective way to manage price uncertainty and dampen price fluctuations. Notably, DTE doesn’t profit from the natural gas itself.

“We don’t add any markup,” Moore says.

Not every energy company in the country has the same options.

“While many utilities use similar principles, like seasonal purchasing and storage, not all have Michigan’s geological advantages,” Moore says. “Our strategy is tailored to our location and customer base, and it’s one of the reasons we consistently offer stable rates.”

Keeping your energy safe and reliable DTE continues its ambitious long-term project to update gas infrastructure.

DTE Gas is more than halfway through a 25-year, multibillion-dollar effort to modernize Michigan’s natural gas infrastructure — work that will help ensure continued safety, reliability and affordability for the company’s 1.3 million gas customers.

Through the Gas Renewal Program and its accompanying meter move-out initiative, DTE crews are replacing aging cast-iron and steel pipelines with longer-lasting, more-efficient polyethylene pipes as well as relocating indoor gas meters outdoors to improve safety and accessibility.

“We’re on track to complete our plan, and it’s been going really well,” says Kevin Mills, gas operations manager. “We’re making great progress. The municipalities have been very good to work with, even with a lot of construction happening in different cities.”

Upgrading for safety, reliability and the environment Each year, DTE replaces more than 100 miles of aging gas pipeline, reducing the potential for leaks and improving system capacity in growing communities.

Once complete, the Gas Renewal Program will have upgraded 4,000 miles of legacy natural gas pipe, cutting annual greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 500,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent, roughly the same as removing 116,000 gasoline-powered vehicles from the road.

The program is part of DTE’s long-term plan to build a cleaner-energy future while maintaining safety and affordability for customers. These efforts align with the company’s commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of its natural gas delivery system, contributing to its CleanVision goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Moving meters outside for safety and convenience In addition to upgrading pipelines, DTE is moving indoor gas meters to outdoor locations. According to Mills, this step

provides multiple benefits for customers and first responders.

“We put it back the way we found it,” Mills says. DTE’s restoration teams take care to leave properties as close as possible to their original condition.

“When meters are outside, technicians can perform more frequent safety checks and maintenance without having to enter the property,” Mills says. “If there’s ever an emergency inside the home, gas can be shut off from outside so first responders can safely enter and do their work.”

All work performed through the Gas Renewal Program is required by the Michigan Public Service Commission and adheres to current health and safety guidelines.

Keeping customers informed

Moving meters outdoors also helps DTE maintain reliable service and respond quickly to customer needs.

While the move requires brief service interruptions, typically lasting two to three hours, the process is designed to minimize inconvenience. After the new equipment is connected, a DTE technician relights appliances and restores service.

Preparing customers for construction DTE makes it a priority to communicate early and often with customers before work begins.

“If customers have any questions, we always encourage them to reach out,” Mills says. “We’re available via dedicated, direct phone lines, which are provided on our website and all mailers and leave-behind materials. We’re here to answer questions and make sure people feel comfortable with the work being done.”

“We do a lot of outreach five to six weeks before we begin construction,” Mills says. “We also schedule appointments with customers to identify the best outdoor location for their meter.”

Affected customers also receive several notices, including letters, emails, postcards and door hangers. Crews may mark property boundaries and underground utilities with flags or stakes.

Once construction begins, DTE installs new gas lines near the street and upgrades the pipes that connect to homes and businesses.

DTE also works closely with business owners to keep disruption minimal.

“If we have to connect the new gas lines, we’re very flexible as far as time of day or weekends so businesses can function normally,” Mills says. “We do our best to work around each customer’s needs.”

Restoring property and peace of mind After gas lines are installed and meters are moved, DTE crews repair driveways, sidewalks and lawns disturbed by the work.

“We’re enhancing safety, improving reliability and making less impact on the environment, and that’s the incentive for customers to cooperate when we’re working in their area.”

Managed by the Montcalm County Housing Commission, Mulberry Estates is an affordable housing community for seniors and people with disabilities.

Home improvement Housing facility Mulberry Estates has made crucial energy efficiency upgrades through DTE’s Multifamily Program.

Multifamily buildings face unique challenges and opportunities when it comes to energy use. DTE’s Multifamily Program is specially designed to help managers and owners of such buildings take advantage of energy-efficient upgrades and incentives designed for multiunit properties.

for upgrades in both individual units and shared spaces. With a focus on highimpact improvements like insulation; air sealing; and efficient heating, cooling, water heating and lighting, you can boost comfort for residents while potentially cutting energy costs for property managers.

“The program offers a no-cost energy assessment where we educate property managers on energy-saving opportunities available to their specific property,” says program lead Sereen Dababneh.

In July 2025, Mulberry Estates, a 20-unit affordable housing community for seniors and people with disabilities, completed energy upgrades through the Multifamily Program with the support and approval of the Montcalm County Housing Commission board. These upgrades

The Howard City, Michigan, affordable housing facility, managed by the Montcalm County Housing Commission, replaced its water heaters and 22 boilers with highefficiency models.

MacTavish says that Mulberry’s old boilers were operating at just 15% to 20% efficiency; the new boilers are up to about 90%.

The property also received rebates to weatherize the attic with air sealing and insulation and install 12 to 14 inches of insulation in the hallways above the units.

“With rebates, it was great; it helped us out a lot,” MacTavish says.

In the end, the projects qualified for about $129,000 in total incentives.

“DTE is helping buildings become more energy efficient because this leads to a more comfortable, healthier and safer environment — especially for the seniors living at this property,” Dababneh says.

MacTavish notes that Mulberry residents are already enjoying the benefits of the upgrades. Added insulation kept units cooler through the summer and warmer well into the fall, reducing the need for extra heating or cooling. As a result, many residents are reporting noticeable drops in gas usage — proof that the improvements are delivering real comfort and savings.

“It’s been very good, positive feedback,” MacTavish says.

And to other property managers and owners who may be leery and questioning the process like he was: “It was very easy. It was a great experience.”

entail purchasing carbon offset credits that fund sound forest management or investing in the development and use of renewable natural gas made by capturing and processing methane emissions from organic waste sources.

“Baker College recognizes our responsibility to environmental stewardship, and this is a great program,” says Aaron Maike, vice president for campus administration and engagement. “You’re truly helping make the world a little bit better by reducing your carbon footprint.”

In west Michigan, renewable natural gas is being generated at the Grand Rapids Water Resource Recovery Facility. DTE also partners with Sauk Trail Hills Landfill in Canton for this purpose.

A dual approach When business customers enroll in Natural Gas Balance, they are able to create a custom program to balance their natural gas carbon footprint. This program can 12

“These practices help to maintain biodiversity, protect watersheds and sequester carbon, which in turn supports our overall environmental goals,” Radel says. “Many customers feel this is a worthy investment.”

100% of their natural gas carbon emissions at four different levels. For businesses or major gas customers, DTE can adjust the percentages to match the customer’s budget and goals, making it a truly customizable program.

Baker College, for example, signed a contract to address 100% of its carbon footprint at two of its campuses through carbon offsets in the Pigeon River Country State Forest. The college annually offsets equivalent emissions of 655,000 miles driven by a gasoline-powered car.

Radel says it’s gratifying to see organizations like Baker College take advantage of the program.

“We have a robust sustainability statement and plan,” Maike says. “We have recycling at all of our campuses. We have banned single-use plastic and the use of Styrofoam on our campuses, just to make sure that we’re doing our part to make the world a little bit cleaner for all of us.”

Natural Gas Balance was a natural fit.

“It was super easy,” Maike says. “They evaluate your CO2 emissions, they draft a contract and you just make it happen.”

Long-term goals Baker College’s partnership with DTE extends beyond Natural Gas Balance.

“I was thrilled when Dr. Maike provided us the opportunity to work with Baker College to put together a Natural Gas Balance program that fits their budget and goals,” he says.

“We have a five-year rolling capital plan,” Maike says. “DTE is visiting all of our campus locations, reviewing what we can do to make our campuses even more efficient, and that’s all free of charge.”

A smart choice

According to Radel, that kind of collaboration is what makes the college a standout partner.

With six campuses across Michigan, Baker College has long prioritized environmental responsibility through strategic planning and infrastructure investments.

“Baker College has a history of focusing on sustainability through its academic programs, a commitment to operational excellence and strategic planning that includes environmental responsibility,” he says.

“Baker College incorporates energy-saving features in its infrastructure and has partnered with our energy efficiency team over the years to find additional energy savings.”

Baker College had already made strong progress, but Radel says the organization was eager to push further —

deepening its commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.

“While much work has been done by Dr. Maike and his team at their numerous campuses, their operations still had a carbon footprint which they desired to address, and they found DTE’s Natural Gas Balance program was the option that best suited their goals,” he says.

Game changer Energy efficiency powers Wolverine Pickleball’s winning strategy.

Christy Howden and Leslie White didn’t just set out to open Wolverine Pickleball in Ann Arbor — they set out to create a movement. Their vision was a vibrant community hub where recreation fuels connection and sustainability, making the game bigger than the court itself.

DTE’s Energy Efficiency Program for Business supported the process with rebates on energy-efficient equipment and incentives that reduced up-front costs while cutting operating expenses for years to come.

“We’re one of the first pickleball-centric ground-up builds in the country,” says Howden, CEO and co-founder of Wolverine Pickleball. “We wanted to be at the forefront of that trend but also make sure our facility was energy efficient from day one.”

Opened in December 2023, Wolverine Pickleball’s 38,000-square-foot facility is more than a venue for America’s fastest-growing sport. Inside, players enjoy 12 indoor courts, a self-serve tap wall, and a lounge that hosts everything from trivia nights and goat yoga to cookie decorating. Outside, the fun continues with sand volleyball, beach tennis and six bocce lanes — making it a true destination for recreation and connection.

The Small Business Association of Michigan (SBAM) honored Christy Howden as its 2025 Energy Champion, spotlighting Wolverine Pickleball’s leadership in sustainability. From LED lighting and advanced HVAC systems to solar-ready design, Howden and Leslie White have built a model of efficiency and innovation that other small businesses can follow.

That welcoming atmosphere starts with smart design. “For such a large building, we knew we wanted to be energy efficient,” she says.

“Everything’s LED; everything’s programmable — our lighting, our thermostats — all designed to reduce waste and cost.”

Powering energy efficiency with rebates Howden and White learned about DTE’s business rebate programs through their contractors and the SBAM Energy Solutions program.

“We had an energy audit done through SBAM with DTE,” Howden says. “That helped us find ways to save.”

By partnering with DTE and experienced contractors, Wolverine Pickleball earned rebates on lighting, HVAC and refrigeration that streamlined both construction and operations. “Our contractors were well versed in the program, so it made everything go smoothly,” Howden says.

The team also designed the facility to be solar ready, planning to install panels in the future.

“It’s a big investment, but we’re planning for it,” Howden says. “We’re even making our new kitchen all-electric so we can tap into solar power once it’s installed.”

Expanding the vision Howden’s second facility, Northville Pickleball Club, a 49,000-squarefoot venue opened in September 2025, follows the same energyconscious blueprint — and it’s already attracting national attention.

“We have people from all over the country, and even the world, calling us to ask how we did it,” Howden says. Wolverine Pickleball was even featured in the PBS show Start Up, which chronicled how the co-owners evolved from players to teachers to developers.

“It’s definitely a win all around,” Howden says.

“We have giant fans that circulate air to keep people cool, and during the summer, we open our garage doors to take advantage of the breeze. The LED lighting gives that indooroutdoor feel.”

Receiving the Energy Champion Award was an unexpected but gratifying honor.

“We were very surprised when we found out,” Howden says. “It was a really nice recognition of the work we’ve put in.”

She accepted the crystal award at SBAM’s annual luncheon and proudly displays it at the club’s front counter.

“People notice it when they come in,” she adds.

“It’s a great reminder that being smart about energy isn’t just for big corporations — small businesses can make a huge impact, too.”

One such customer is Taystee’s Burgers, the neighborhood gem serving up halal burgers, hot dogs and wings. Taystee’s started as a setup inside a Dearborn gas station in 2014 and has since franchised and expanded to multiple locations across southeast Michigan.

Hussien Saghir owns the Taylor and Woodhaven spots. The Woodhaven location is the newer of Saghir’s properties, under his care since last spring. DTE also services Saghir’s residential property, and that’s how he learned about the energy assessments.

Dreffs was the advisor who performed the assessment at the Woodhaven Taystee’s.

“I showed up; I met with some of the owner’s family,” he says.

Dreffs notes that the property is a newer building and was already functioning efficiently, so there wasn’t a ton that needed to be done. He says, though, he was able to swap out some faucet aerators, those mesh disks at the end of the tap; they introduce air into a faucet’s water flow to maintain pressure while using less water. “[The advisor] also gave us some tips about how to keep things sealed, as far as doors and refrigerators,” Saghir says.

For efficiency upgrades that can’t be made on the spot, businesses get a custom report detailing any other areas where the advisor spotted potential for energy-saving improvements, heavier lifts that may qualify for rebates through DTE’s Energy Efficiency Program for Business.

Currently, Saghir doesn’t have plans for any large-scale projects — again, Taystee’s is in pretty good shape already — but he says he can’t see any downside to the energy assessment.

“I would definitely recommend it,” he says. “I think it’s worth getting the assessment and seeing what’s going on. It can definitely save you money.”

Jessica Scavo never imagined that her 30 goats would be a compelling part of DTE’s environmental strategy.

The co-founder of Michigoat — a year-old passion project with her husband, Gio — has a unique approach to land management that not only is clean and green but also sparks a little joy.

“I started researching goat grazing because I was fascinated by how natural and effective it was,” says Scavo, who also has a full-time job in the energy industry. “The more I read about

the environmental benefits, the more I thought, ‘Maybe this is something I could really do.’”

Scavo bought her first goats in July 2023, and within a year, Michigoat was in high demand to tackle invasive vegetation like tall phragmites grass and poison ivy.

“There’s been so much interest from people who want natural solutions to clearing land instead of chemicals or heavy equipment,” she says.

A natural fit for DTE As part of its broader sustainability and environmental strategy, DTE is focusing on clearing unwanted vegetation at its 37 service centers across the state and other key sites — areas that can pose significant maintenance, ecological and fire-risk challenges if not properly managed. Enter the goats, which can take invasive plants and grasses down in days. “[The goats] take care of invasive species … that are difficult and costly to manage with traditional landscaping,” says Christy Clark, director of sustainability and compliance for DTE. The goats don’t just mow down weeds; they also help DTE move closer to its sustainability goals.

“This is better for the environment than using traditional landscaping equipment,” Clark says. “Over time, these areas require less maintenance as the goats weaken the invasive plants.”

In early 2025, Clark and her team were asked to pilot this unique landscaping solution and bring in the goats to manage vegetation at DTE’s Shelby Township service station.

“As soon as our team heard [the word] ‘goats,’ we said, ‘Absolutely,’” Clark says.

The goats were on the Shelby Township site for two weeks in April 2025, working their way through 10,000 square feet of thick vegetation. The Scavos took turns managing the munching animals and chatting with

many interested passersby.

Clark says the results spoke for themselves.

“Each site is different, but [the Shelby Service Center] showed us that goats could handle even tough, overgrown areas,” she says. “It also proved that we could get real value while being environmentally responsible.”

Employee morale booster According to Clark, the environmental benefits were clear, but the unexpected bonus was employee engagement.

“People loved having the goats on-site,” she says. “It sparked conversations and created connections across the company

in a way we hadn’t predicted.”

The program has also created lasting memories for employees, who got to name one of Scavo’s goats. More than 200 submissions poured in, with “Vincent Van Goat” as the top choice.

There was a celebration in honor of the naming that brought employees together from across the company.

“It’s rare to see that kind of engagement across the board,” Clark says.

Scavo says those kinds of connections are what makes the work rewarding.

“It’s fun to see how much joy they bring,” she says of the goats.

From family farm to corporate partner Running Michigoat is no small task. “[For my husband and me,] this is a 24/7 job between the fieldwork, planning and taking care of the goats,” Scavo says.

The Scavos’ small Washington Township operation — a former horse farm — provides the perfect base for the family, which includes two teens.

The goats chewed through 10,000 square feet of vegetation in 2 weeks

Scavo, who works as a contractor for DTE, says the goats are more than just livestock.

“They’re tools, but they’re also personalities,” Scavo says. “They’re picky eaters in their own way, and they even have natural defenses against toxins. It’s fascinating to watch them work.”

Looking ahead

“They’re amazed,” Clark says. “It makes me proud that DTE is leading the way with something that’s good for the environment, good for our employees and good for the communities we serve.”

For Scavo, having an idea and running with it was life changing.

Clark says that it’s likely the MichigoatDTE partnership will expand to other sites, like renewable energy facilities and the Fermi 2 Power Plant in Newport.

“If goats can help clean up the land and make people smile at the same time,” she says, “that feels like a win for everyone.”

“Anywhere we have invasive species, we’ll see if goats are the right fit,” she says.

Now that cold weather has settled in, you might notice that your business’s energy bills are increasing as temperatures drop.

However, there are ways to cut back on your energy use even during the coldest winter days.

Winter natural gas and electric bills spike mainly because of increased heating needs. Heating alone can account for up to half of a business’s energy use.

Free assessments, real results When a school connects with the DTE team, the journey to energy savings begins with a complimentary on-site assessment. From quick wins like LED bulb installation to long-term strategies such as HVAC replacement planning, DTE helps schools uncover opportunities to cut costs, improve comfort and support a healthier learning environment.

“We’ll also provide rebate estimates before the project begins so the school knows its potential savings and return on investment,” Muslmani says.

Schools don’t have to navigate energy upgrades by themselves. Michigan winters are known to test commercial gas-powered HVAC systems.

And should one of those systems fail, DTE commercial gas customers can tap into a special Instant Discount program that offers both short- and long-term rewards for qualifying equipment, says Aaron Prince, senior trade ally manager for DTE.

For water heaters, the program covers three main types: storage, instantaneous and indirect models. Each has its own efficiency standards and qualifying requirements.

“If a product meets our efficiency minimums but isn’t on the list, we can review the documentation and add it,” Prince says.
