One exciting example is our work underway in Northville, where DTE is partnering with the Michigan International Technology Corridor to support one of Wayne County’s largest economic development projects. We’re building a new electric substation that will add needed electric capacity, helping to support an 800-acre technology hub expected to bring 6,000 new jobs to the area.

In addition to adding capacity, we are rebuilding more than 3 miles of overhead power lines and installing more than 5 miles of new underground cable. We’re also adding smart grid technology, which can significantly reduce the duration of outages. These smart devices allow us to pinpoint problems faster and reroute power where needed so customers experience fewer interruptions.

Similar work is also underway in Pontiac and Shelby Township, which together with Northville represents an investment of more than $100 million.

This investment is just one small part of our comprehensive four-point plan to deliver the reliable energy our customers deserve. From completely rebuilding sections of the grid to upgrading existing equipment, adding more smart technology, and trimming trees near power lines, we are laser-focused on building the electric grid of the future across Southeast Michigan.

Measurable savings An independent study proves the benefit of energy efficiency upgrades.

One of the goals of this publication is to shine a spotlight on businesses like yours that save energy by participating in DTE Energy’s various programs designed to support companies of all sizes find efficiencies, increase savings and offer custom solutions. Over the years, these pages have detailed the successes of dry cleaners, grocery stores, manufacturers, breweries, and many other businesses that have taken control of their energy consumption and improved efficiency. But can those energy savings truly be measured?

To help answer that question, DTE commissioned an independent study

by Detroit-based business consulting firm Guidehouse, which specializes in evaluating energy efficiency programs.

“We work with companies like DTE to help reduce customer energy usage, save money and alleviate inefficient use of the energy grid,” a rep from the firm explains. “Our efforts support a more stable energy grid and reduce negative environmental impacts.”

The methodology About the study, DTE program lead Jeremy Cappello says the focus was on business customers who had done a project with a participating contractor — that is, a contractor well versed in DTE’s energy efficiency programs and incentives and listed on DTE’s website.

“The analysis examined the percentage of energy savings attributable to commonly installed energy efficiency products,” Cappello says.

Guidehouse analyzed daily customer usage data from the 12 months before and after a project’s completion, excluding customers with data quality or completeness issues and controlling for factors such as weather, day type (weekday versus weekend), and month. Guidehouse grouped business customers into categories and examined the impact of energy efficiency improvements they made. In total, the firm analyzed 1,028 records.

Retailers averaged $901 in DTE rebates The findings The study found that retail trade businesses — think grocery and clothing stores, florists, auto parts dealers, and gas stations, just to name a few — achieved noteworthy energy savings following the completion of projects facilitated through DTE’s Small and Medium Business Program. Among these types of businesses, the average rebates received totaled $901, and the average energy saved was 10,141 kilowatt-hours (or 5%).

In food-related spaces such as convenience stores and liquor retailers, the most impactful upgrades included door gaskets, anti-sweat heater controls, LED refrigerator case lighting, electronically commutated motors and strip curtains. At other retail trade businesses, lighting measures such as the installation of high-bay and HID exterior lights as well as delamping were the most impactful.

Guidehouse also gathered quotes from business customers about their

experiences with the Small and Medium Business Program and found that they could point to benefits aside from energy savings. For example, moreefficient lighting can improve safety for staff and visitors, and properly running coolers help ensure that for-sale drinks are kept at the most optimal, enjoyable temperature. It’s also worth noting that upgrades that improve efficiency may translate to less time and money spent on repairs and maintenance.

The takeaways The Guidehouse study shows that measurable results are possible with upgrades that improve energy efficiency, and owners of businesses of all types can find programs that meet their needs through DTE’s website or by connecting with a knowledgeable rep.

“Upgrading to energy-efficient equipment is a strategic investment that benefits both business customers and utilities by reducing costs, enhancing sustainability, improving work environments and fostering collaboration across the value chain,” Cappello says. “Whether you’re building from the ground up or tackling a structural overhaul, we provide expert insight and useful rebates. It’s simple and easy to get started.”

Small-business grand-prize winners will take home $5,000 in improvements.

DTE’s Small Business Energy Efficiency Makeover Contest has shined a spotlight on all kinds of businesses over the years.

Since 2016, winners have included a small family dairy, a cosmetic company, a confectioner and a school for blind children.

The most recent winners — including Camp Grace Bentley, a camp for people with disabilities; a Franciscan nonprofit; and a pediatric health care office — show that 6

Michigan’s small-business community continues to have a great story to tell about energy efficiency.

This robust prize package is why nearly 600 small and medium-sized businesses in Michigan entered last year’s contest, which is open to all such businesses that are current DTE electric, gas or combo customers.

“Any penny that I can save in one place frees up dollars to continue giving back to our neighbors,” he says.

“We need to do this not only for our bottom line but to also improve the comfort and ambience for our tenants,” he says.

Conscientious landlords

‘A wonderful gift’

As small-business owners and entrepreneurs, Joe and Laurie Dixon — who own Executive Office Suites in downtown Trenton — know a penny saved is a penny earned.

South of Detroit, the Penrickton Center for Blind Children was established as a free child care center in 1952. Its nonprofit status means upgrades must be done conscientiously, says Janet Ames, the center’s longtime community relations coordinator.

The Dixons’ building had old fluorescent lighting and 1980s-era air conditioning units to service 20 office suites. Joe had retrofitted some lighting to LED but

Small, incremental changes can make a huge difference. That’s true whether you’re looking to accomplish a fitness goal or improve your business’s energy efficiency. One easy way to make headway on the latter is to replace energydraining halogen, incandescent and fluorescent lights with significantly more efficient LED bulbs and fixtures.

To help make lighting upgrades possible, DTE points to its Lighting Instant Discount Program.

With this initiative, business customers in good standing are eligible for point-of-sale discounts on energy-efficient lighting options — including exit signs and occupancy sensors — purchased through participating distributors.

for instance — are especially popular with his clients. When EnergySmarts for Michigan Business magazine connected with Horn in mid-April, he and his team were looking ahead to a $13,000 project, upgrading all the lighting and installing industrial-sized fans in the Romulus Public Works Department building.

Horn has been working closely with DTE for more than a decade, and he says the Instant Discount program and others like it have made improving energy efficiency possible for many of JAC’s clients: “Without the DTE programs, a lot of people wouldn’t be able to do the whole scope of the project.”

Upgrades like the lighting projects that JAC specializes in help business customers cut back on electricity and potentially save money on their energy bills. “Then they can transfer that on to other stuff,” Horn says.

Jaworowski says distributors like JAC are integral to the team; they help business customers achieve their efficiency goals and

help DTE work toward its own target of netzero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

“JAC LED Lighting consistently delivers several large projects every year and has developed positive relationships in the commercial community,” Jaworowski says.

“They’re great at promoting energy-efficient equipment and highlighting the incentives that folks can receive from DTE.” And DTE’s instant discounts aren’t limited to lighting upgrades. Business customers can also shop for energy-efficient food service and HVAC equipment, some marked down up to 40%, all without paperwork and waiting for a rebate.

To share what he learned along the way, Nelson created a step-by-step guide for other nonprofits to follow.

From assessment to action As Nelson and his team searched for ways to reduce operating costs, they connected with DTE’s Small and Medium Business Program. Through this initiative, a DTE energy advisor visited their site to identify practical energy-saving opportunities.

The improvements that followed not only reduced the church’s energy consumption but also inspired Nelson to create a handbook for other nonprofits.

“I absolutely love when something is a win-win-win situation,” Nelson says. “A win for the consumer in savings, a win for the company by reducing strain on the grid and a win for the environment.”

Energy-efficient upgrades Ore Creek purchased its building in 2013 from another congregation. Originally 12

constructed in the 1950s, with additions through 1980, the facility still had outdated lighting, particularly in the former school wing.

During the initial walk-through, the DTE advisor installed new energy-saving equipment on the spot — including LEDs to replace 115 incandescent bulbs — at no cost to the church. A follow-up report recommended upgrading 304 fluorescent tubes to LED fixtures and outlined available rebates to offset the expense.

Nelson and his team chose to handle the installation themselves to stretch the rebate further.

“Since the school portion of our building was using 1970s lighting technology, there was a lot we could update,” Nelson says.

Lessons in lighting The process wasn’t without its challenges. Nelson and his team discovered that lighting fixtures varied across the building, requiring some investigation and extra work.

“There was a learning curve,” he explains.

“Some fixtures used magnetic ballasts; others had electronic ones. The older ones had to be rewired, which took about a half hour each.”

Despite the effort, the results were well worth it. Nelson and his team discovered that two LED tubes could replace a four-tube fluorescent fixture, delivering more light with less energy. The lighting was softer, reducing eye strain and headaches, and the brighter environment

was immediately noticeable to the congregation.

Big savings, fast rebates By performing the work themselves and sourcing cost-effective LED tubes, Ore Creek significantly reduced project costs. Thanks to DTE rebates, the church received money back within a month of completing the upgrades.

The improvements are saving Ore Creek approximately 5,500 watts every time the sanctuary is used and 6,500 watts in classrooms used throughout the week.

“We saved money two ways: through the rebates and on our monthly electric bill,” Nelson says. “How could you not love that?”

Paying it forward Inspired by this success, Nelson helped a neighboring congregation — Tri County Christian Church — upgrade its lighting. Tri County experienced similar savings and comfort improvements.

pandemic finally turned her attention to the costs of operating the building.

Winning a small-business makeover from DTE sends Pediatric Healthcare on the next leg of its energy journey.

In 1998, Dr. Sharon McManus realized a childhood dream of opening her own comprehensive pediatrics practice.

“I have a drawing … of an office floor plan that I drew when I was 12,” she says. “I’ve wanted to do this since I was a kid.”

Careful thought about lack of accessible care steered her to the Detroit suburb of Sterling Heights, where her new practice, Pediatric Healthcare, became the first tenant in a brand-new 9,000-squarefoot commercial building.

Like many physicians, McManus is passionate about the practice of medicine — not so much about the details of managing a large commercial facility.

Growing the practice from just herself to a team of eight and 12 additional support staff, McManus is truly living the dream as she envisioned it decades ago, she says.

“We haven’t paid as much attention [to operations].

We are a small business, and we don’t have a facilities manager looking after those kinds of interests for us,” she says, adding that financial stressors during the COVID-19

Slowly, she and her partners began making changes as they could, starting with some energy-efficient lighting, but it was a small article in DTE’s EnergySmarts for Michigan Business magazine that got her thinking bigger.

“I read DTE’s magazine and noticed the contest,” she says. “It seemed like something that was wise to pay attention to.”

In addition, several print, web and social media marketing opportunities help the grand-prize winners promote their energy efficiency journeys to more than 200,000 DTE business customers statewide, Liang says.

Small and medium-sized businesses entering the contest must be current DTE electric, gas or combo customers that are open and operating.

They also should have a story to share.

“We are looking for intentional energy efficiency measures already taken, but also a comprehensive entry that tells a story,” Liang says.

‘Good, smart changes’ One thing that made McManus’s entry stand out from the others was her prior commitment to energy efficiency and her future goals beyond the contest.

“She had already done what she could with lighting efficiency, but 16

there was more to do, and she was looking for guidance and the funds to help get her there,” Liang says.

After finding out she had won the $5,000 in upgrades and a professional energy efficiency assessment, McManus wasn’t surprised the DTE energy advisor focused immediately on the lighting.

“We have a lot of lights throughout our medical practice,” she says. “While we knew they were less effective than we wanted them to be, we also wanted to pay attention to the kind of light we provide our patients and employees who are in the office for multiple hours.

“We wanted to make good, smart changes.”

The assessment and prize money went a long way at Pediatric Healthcare.

McManus and her partners opted to make the recommended changes for lighting fixtures inside and outside around their sign and parking lot. She figures the switch will improve the aesthetics and lighting consistency in the hallways and front reception area, benefiting the 100 or so patients who visit each day.

It may also save her practice $8,000 a year in energy costs.

“The energy cost savings was immediately effective for us and will perpetuate itself for years,” she says.

As for the next steps, McManus points to the four furnaces that heat the building.

The “really informative” DTE energy advisor had some ideas to help make the furnaces work better together, tactics that will help during an upcoming renovation.

So says Kristen Siemen, former chief sustainability officer at General Motors Co. and the keynote speaker at the 26th annual Michigan Energy Efficiency Conference and Exhibition hosted

by DTE and The Engineering Society of Detroit in Novi this past May. The premier event — the only one of its kind in Michigan — also included 20 educational sessions and 42 exhibitors that showcased technology, products and services designed to help commercial and industrial businesses manage their energy. Roughly 600 people attended the event to network and learn more about energy efficiency best practices.

Framing sustainability as “risk management” and “future proofing,” Siemen urged attendees not to delay setting their own sustainability goals and getting started on them. “It’s more important than ever to think about how we weave sustainability into our business,” she said. Siemen posited that business leaders had multiple reasons to care about sustainability, including staying ahead of regulations, attracting investors, boosting employee engagement, and building brand loyalty and trust.

She cited cost savings as another major benefit. In a play on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, she described a priority pyramid for energy, building up from measuring usage to conserving energy, focusing on efficiency, shifting demand (managing when energy is used) and, finally, relying on renewables. The “efficiency” step, Siemen noted in particular, has an excellent return on investment.

In the exhibit hall, event organizers got creative this year, adding two new stops: a demonstration area to showcase advanced energy tech, and an interactive model home that served as the backdrop for an energy efficiency scavenger hunt. “We wanted to boost engagement and make the event more interactive,” said Travion Byrd, one of the event organizers from DTE. In both areas, attendees had the opportunity to learn about energy management in a fun, hands-on way.

Individual features of the conference and exhibit may change from year to year, but the need for such an event — which dates back to 2000 — is as strong as ever.

The payoff of long-life measures From HVAC systems and lighting to compressed air and process equipment, long-life projects focus on replacing outdated equipment with high-efficiency alternatives.

These upgrades might require more capital up front, but they can generate significant savings over time by slashing energy usage and minimizing maintenance costs.

DTE’s Community Lighting Program offers a reliable, cost-effective solution to investing in lighting that can save energy and promote safety.

Designed for commercial, industrial, municipal and even residential customers, the program delivers hassle-free lighting systems with maintenance and energy included in a predictable monthly rate, says Brandon Faron, principal account manager for DTE’s Community Lighting Program.

The program uses modern LED technology, which in addition to providing a bigger lighting footprint consumes measurably less electricity than older systems such as high-pressure sodium or metal halide lights, Faron says.

“That means lower energy consumption and lower bills,” he explains, “and customers often have to put fewer lights in than they think they need.”

Proper lighting is also a known crime deterrent.

“Whether it’s a parking lot, a private roadway in a residential subdivision or a business frontage, people feel safer and more comfortable when spaces are welllit,” Faron says.

DTE’s Community Lighting Program takes the hassle out of outdoor lighting for all kinds of customers.

Program process Getting started is as simple as flicking a switch. Customers can call, email or visit DTE’s website to submit a request, Faron says.

“We work with the customer to develop a project scope,” he says. “Sometimes we can do that virtually using tools like Google Earth, but often we’ll visit the site to understand exactly what’s needed.”

Once the scope is defined, DTE provides a detailed budget letter outlining project costs and estimated monthly charges. If the customer decides to move forward, an agreement is drafted.

“If a light goes out or a pole gets damaged, the customer just reports it using our online outage map,” Faron says. “There are no surprise repair costs.”

Happy customers So far, tens of thousands of new lights dot Southeast Michigan; high-profile installations include more than 300 lights at Oakland Mall and 50 more at Macomb Mall.

As the weather heats up this summer, so do many DTE customers’ home and business renovation projects. Whether you’re planning to add a new deck to your backyard or uproot a dying tree that is blocking your business, engaging in safe digging practices is crucial.

Contacting MISS DIG, Michigan’s utility safety notification system, before you start any excavation is one of the first steps.

“Safety is our top priority at DTE,” says Scot Runke, manager of gas operations at DTE. “We work with MISS DIG in a few different capacities, including communicating with them about the locations of our lines and helping to spread safe digging messaging to our customers.”

Through its work with MISS DIG, DTE hopes to prevent damage to gas lines that can result from irresponsible digging practices. Here, Runke answers five questions about DTE’s goals in this collaboration, as well as what customers need to know before they break ground on their newest projects.

How does the MISS DIG program work?

MISS DIG is a not-for-profit organization.

State laws require anyone planning to do any type of digging to have the utility lines at their site marked before they begin their project.

This service is completely free and for your safety. MISS DIG requests provide information such as the type of work being done, date of the project, location where the work will be performed, etc., and this can be filled out online or over the phone by calling 811.

Once a request is submitted, MISS DIG references their mapping information and reaches out to utility owners in the area, like Consumers Energy, DTE and AT&T, and it is the company’s responsibility to go to the site and mark where their lines are.

What are the dangers of damaging a natural gas pipeline?

A simple example is when someone is doing a project and they go out with a shovel and just start digging. They don’t know what’s down there, and if they puncture a line, now there could be a very dangerous situation with a gas leak.

Even if the line isn’t directly punctured, digging can disrupt the protective coating on the natural gas pipeline, causing a more rapid deterioration of the equipment. When minor damage occurs to the line and is then covered up, it can cause a slow underground leak.

Gas will follow the path of least resistance as it travels and potentially leak back into a building if a line gets damaged.

What types of projects require contacting MISS DIG? As a rule, anything that disturbs the ground. For homeowners, this could mean replacing a fence line, repositioning posts, installing a new mailbox and more. For business owners, this could mean removing an

old tree, planting a new one, maintenance and more. Any project that requires digging should involve contacting MISS DIG. Another instance that often gets overlooked is event planning. When someone hosts an event that requires a tent, the stakes that go into the ground can go very deep. Even if you have a near miss when putting the spike in the ground, when you pull the stake out, it’s easy to puncture a line.

What are the consequences of not calling MISS DIG at 811?

The responsibility if damage occurs to DTE equipment falls on who is holding the shovel, whether it’s a homeowner doing a project or an excavator. The fine for this type of damage would be a repair bill from DTE. We’d bill for all expenses incurred in making the repairs, including the crew, the repairs needed and to get the property back to its previous state after the repair is made.

Why is the MISS DIG program so important?

Safety is a top priority, which is why we encourage people to use this service. Even though it’s the responsibility of whoever is doing the digging, the homeowner or business owner should be equally concerned about safety. And even if you think you remember from a prior MISS DIG visit where the lines may be, you should always request a new visit. Even if your memory is somewhat accurate, if you’re a few inches off, the results can be dangerous.

As temperatures ratchet up during the summer months, so too does the demand for electricity as everyone tries to keep cool and comfortable. The window air conditioning units come up from storage, ceiling fans go into overdrive and thermostat settings get lowered. Some increased energy use is unavoidable, but one way DTE works to manage energy demand and help business customers save money (and earn a little, too) is with the Smart Savers program. Customers with Wi-Fi–enabled smart thermostats who enroll in the program and participate in Smart Savers “events” are eligible for an annual $50 bill credit.

The program rules allow the customer to have some flexibility, but participating consistently in events in accordance with the rules will result in an end-of-season credit. The benefits include reduced energy use and carbon emissions, plus that $50 bill credit.

Across business and residential customers, approximately 78,000 devices are currently enrolled, Davila notes.

“We want to give businesses the opportunity to make an impact, environmentally,” Davila says. “It also helps us get closer to achieving our net-zero emissions goal by 2050. So, in a sense, it’s a collaboration that benefits your business and our community.”
