Is it me or was that one hell of an Easter weekend?? Talk about party party party, the festivities got off to a flying start on maundy Thursday with practically all the venues in the village hosting an evening of fun and frivolity with lots of cheap drinks offers and cheap shots to help get the party started. My particular favourite was the Amy Winehouse tribute on at View she really was brilliant and the up for it crowd at View really did make her feel welcome, the village was really busy with a mad party atmosphere, obviously the prospect of not being back at work again until tuesday proved too much of a temptation to the gay partyfaithful. By 10:30pm Cruz had a queue literally around the block, we decided to check out the new pop party night at Essential before heading over to Cruz once the queue had died down. This new Thursday night really has taken off well it was nice to have a choice of club nights on a Thursday especially as its a different crowd in Essential one that doesn’t seem to have affected the atmosphere at the still very popular back2back night held jointly by Poptastic and Cruz in bed together with both floors banging out the tunes until the early hours of friday morning.

After the carnage of a full on Thursday night blow out Good Friday seemed a little on the tame side it really did feel like everyone was saving themselves for either a huge night on Saturday or Sunday or in most cases BOTH!! It has to be said that the rest of the weekend is something of a blur but i am reliably informed by my sources that the whole village rocked with a pride like vibe for the next 48 hours! With the clubbing highlights undoubtedly being wild fruit at essential on Saturday with the boys from Brighton putting on a fabulously decadent display meanwhile across the village at Cruz Miss Cara was again hosting yet another capacity crowd at Drama Queen, with the club once again bursting at the seams everyone was really up for a massive night of fun and as usual the old tart didnt fail to deliver. It was a very similar story just around the corner at cub alter ego where both rooms at Poptastic were packed to the rafters with Mr

Poptastic himself presiding over the usual frivolity into the wee small hours. For those who didn’t venture out on Saturday night and it has to be said for quite a few who did, then Sunday night was perhaps THE night of the weekend. With the sun shining down on us gay boys and girls it was always gonna be a bit of a mad one. As expected the good weather brought everyone out to play early, and all the venues on Canal street and indeed across the village were particularly busy pretty much from lunch time onwards. I took a walk down Canal street mid afternoon on Sunday myself and it really did feel like a mini pride weekend. It was particularly nice to see the village decorated in Easter Bunting and everyone enjoying the good weather with a smie on their face, it really did feel like we had emerged unharmed after a long winter of hibernation. As the daytime drinkers slowly dwindled, what can only be

described as an army of up for it clubbers descended on the village with the intention of partying well on into the morning and boy did they party. All of the venues were rammed to capacity pretty much all night despite the usual exodus of the Federation faithful who could bee seen heading off along Whitworth street towards the Ritz from 11pm onwards. The first Federation of the year is always a hugely anticipated event and as usual the team from Federation did us proud, with many clubbers

claiming to have had the night of their lives God only knows what they have lined up for us at their 6th birthday coming up soon at the next bank holiday weekend. Anyway I’m sure I’m in danger of boring you all to death now if i don’t shut up soon, so i wish you all a speedy recovery and remind you all there is another bank holiday weekend to look forward to on the 3rd of May. God help our Livers and our bank balances!!

Initially opened as a private members bar 8 years ago, its fair to say Bar below has had a bumpy ride. Once home to Poptastic bar and subsequnetly the subject of a ferocios fire it’s something of a minor miracle that the bar has survived this far however like the mystical phoenix rising from the ashes under its current ownership for almost 4 years now this cosy little intimte subterrainean venue has finally found it’s feet. During the week the bar is cosy, relaxed and intimate perfect for a romantic 1st date, they also boast the best range of spirits across the village with many rare little numbers, hand imported by the owner himself. If cocktails are your baby then you simply have to check out what is undoubtedly the most comprehensive cocktail menu in the village. All freshly prepared in front of your very own eyes. On a hot sunny day Bar Below exlodes out onto canal street with a large number of tables which all enjoy

the sun throughout the afternoon and with table service from some very sexy boys and girls it really would be rather rude not to pay them a visit. Why not check out the new house rose it really is rather lovely and at only £6.95 really something of a bargain! Just take care when you eventually stand up to leave its pretty potent stuff and we wouldnt want to fish you out of the canal now!! At the weekends its a totally different story with a 4am license on fridays and 5am on saturdays and a live DJ playing some seriously funky tunes, the bar takes on a totally different vibe and quickly fills to capacity with a queue outside the door so we would suggest you get there early to avoid dissapointment, if your lucky enough the pretty ones amongst you may be handed a free shot voucher on your way in to enjoy with your 1st drink! Our top tip - Treat yourself to a Jug of JuneBug for £10 it really is rather nice.!!!

With only weeks to go until Blackpool pride 2009, this year really is shaping up to be an x-tra special event. Until now, the names of the finale acts have been kept strictly under wraps by the organisers and now they are proud to announce that this year will feature two of the biggest stars from last years x factor – Laura White and Austin Drage. Joining top billing with Laura will be Austin Drage, another tipped to win the competition last year and described by simon cowell as “just what the competition needed”. Austin had already become a fan favourite when he appeared in e4’s “boys will be girls”, when he and two other male singers posed as a new girl band the honeytraps. Also appearing on stage, as previously announced, will be eurovision entrants Scooch, 80’s legends Toyah Wilcox and Hazell Dean and opening the show, Jo O’meara from s club 7, plus many more artists. Mark Hurtse, vice chair and

organiser of the main stage entertainment said “with an allstar celebrity line up this year, i am sure it is going to be our best show ever running throughout the day. With stars from x factor, britain’s got talent, some of our favourite club/dance artists, and of course eurovision, I am sure there will be something for everyone in this years show!” Blackpool pride will take place on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th May 2009. Having previously been held on north pier, this year sees the festival move to Dickson road, right in the heart of what is fast becoming known as “Blackpool’s Gay Village”. A special enclosure will be created between Wilkinsons and Funny Girls for the day on saturday 16th may, to include a huge main stage, market stalls, information stands and mini-funfair. Organisers have been working diligently with Blackpool borough council, Lancashire police and business owners in the area to ensure that Blackpool Pride 2009 is a success and promises to be an event not to

be missed. Entry to the enclosed area will be strictly by purchase of a wristband and these can be bought at Prideblackpool.Com. The colourful parade will take place this year on Sunday 17th May, along the promenade, working its way from the St Chads headland to North Pier. This promises to be a fun spectacle for everyone to come and enjoy and with this years parade theme being “carnival”, it seems only fitting that the parade be led by a fantastic samba band, followed by floats and displays. Sunday evening sees a spectacular closing ceremony featuring the vocal talents of Daniel Fox and the Manchester lesbian & gay chorus. This will be a time to reflect and remember those who have been lost in the community, and will feature a spectacular fireworks display from the rooftop of the Flamingos nightclub. Mark Seargent, chair and founder of Blackpool pride added “it is an immensely exciting prospect that our event, in celebration of our rich and diverse lgbt community, will take centre stage in Blackpool

on May 16th and 17th. I could only have dreamt that an event like this would be possible. This is a new chapter for one of the most prominent features of Blackpool’s programme of regeneration.” With an anticipated 10,000 people attending, Blackpool pride 2009 will be the biggest and best to date and promises to be an event not to be missed, and will not only be an event that the whole town can be proud of but an event to put Blackpool back on the map!
