Henry Bahnasawy, Graduate Student from Germany, explores how the hidden backbone of the internet is reshaping global connectivity.

Henry recently completed the GDI Certificate, powered by SubOptic and delivered by the University of California, Berkeley. The programme explains how the internet works through submarine cables, data centres, and cable landing stations.

He says learning from industry practitioners turned the internet from an abstract idea into critical infrastructure underpinning economies and societies.

In his article on West Africa’s digital infrastructure, Henry highlights a key risk: while all countries are connected to submarine cables, several still rely on a single cable, meaning an outage could disconnect entire nations and expose resilience gaps.

He explains his view has shifted toward the need for stronger collaboration, governance, and regulation alongside infrastructure expansion to improve resilience.
