n a nail-biting season finale showdown between Aquaria, Asia O'Hara, Eureka, and Kameron Michaels, Aquaria was crowned the season 10 winner of VH1's Emmy Awardwinning “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” earning the title of “America's Next Drag Superstar” and a cash prize of $100,000. In a world full of nines, Aquaria was a 10 in a season filled with stunning looks, sickening lip-syncs, topical conversations and an elimination that left viewers screaming “Vanjie.” Filmed in front of a packed house at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, season nine winner Sasha Velour was on-hand during the finale to pass on the title to her successor.

“This season will go down as one of the most competitive in 'Drag Race' herstory. And still, Aquaria's many talents distinguished her from the field of amazing queens,” said executive producer and Emmy Award-winning host

RuPaul. “This is the dawning of the Age of Aquaria. I can't wait to see what she does next.” It was a pleasure to sit down with Aquaria for this exclusive Hotspots interview, less than a day after she was crowned America's Next Drag Superstar. At what age did drag become an interest & how did you pick your name? I first got interest in drag after watching Season one of Drag Race. I wish I had a better story on how I picked my name, but I am an Aquarius, so I simply picked Aquaria.

How many times did you apply to be on RPDR and how did it feel when you found out you got chosen? I applied once and it felt crazy. I started losing my mind when I got the call, and then I kicked

parents, was it always like this? Yes! They have always been very supportive and helpful in my life and career. As long as I love what I am doing and do it well they are in my corner 100%!

Going into the finals, if you knew you couldn't win who would you have wanted to win and why? Any of the 3 would have been fantastic options, but Asia O'Hara is one of the greatest people oi have ever met in my life and an amazing example for drag and our community.

everything into overdrive.

Do you think there is more pressure on the Queens now that Drag Race has been on so long? Absolutely, as we see every year the bar gets raised higher and higher. In addition, the fans expect more and more, so you have to come as close as possible to perfecting every aspect of your drag. Tell us about your Drag Race experience? It was the most wonderful experience of my life. It was so fulfilling, and was a challenge every day. It tested me as an entertainer and a human being, but I love a good challenge.

You have a keen eye for fashion and are very fashion forward. Where did this come from, and how would you describe your fashion sense? For me I grew up online from style blogs and online publication. I explored the internet, and I think that was the key to grow my fashion sense… I would describe my fashion sense as diverse, colorful, and exciting and never the same! From the Finale we see you seem to have a very special relationship with your

What are you going to do with the $100,000? I'm going to invest it back into my drag. My purpose for doing Drag Race was to take my drag to the next level. I want to be in control of my drag and elevate it to the highest level.

What's ahead for Aquaria? I just released my first song, “Burn Rubber,” which is now available on iTunes, so please buy it. In addition, I will be doing lots of touring, as I have a pretty packed calendar. To find out where I will be or for any information check out my website at: Ageofaquaria.com.

deep inside HOLLYWOOD By Romeo San Vicente

It Girl Sophia Lillis Cast as Ellen's Nancy Drew

THE CELLULOID CLOSET Heartthrob Tab Hunter (left) and Psycho star Tony Perkins were secretly an item at a time when being out was unthinkable for actors in Hollywood.

Once Tab Hunter and Tony Perkins Had a Secret Love Back in the bad old days, most ordinary queer people stayed quietly in the closet. The pressure to do so was especially strong among actors and actresses, especially among those considered A-listers. Take Tab Hunter (Damn Yankees, Polyester) and Tony Perkins (Psycho), two leading men of their era, both gay, and also very much a very private item. The now 87-year-old Hunter's first-person account of this moment in his memoir Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star will form the basis of Tab & Tony, a Paramount project in the works from producers Zachary Quinto and J.J. Abrams. It will tell the story of their affair and their highly

34 | Hotspots.LGBT

manufactured public images in an era when being exposed as gay meant the end of a career.

Tab & Tony will tell the story of their affair and their highly manufactured public images.

A screenplay is in the works from Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winner Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife), and directors and cast are still TBA. We vote yes to more historical dramas of this sort, the kind that eradicate secret histories and remind hetero culture that we've been here the entire time.

Franchise alert! Ellen Degeneres' A Very Good Production and Warner Bros. are teaming up to produce something that sounds very much like the template for a series of films reviving the character Nancy Drew. Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, which all but says, “We, too, can be like Harry Potter, and why not? has begun principal photography, with It breakout star Sophia Lillis as the young lady sleuth. The character was the resourceful protagonist of a long, long, loooonnng series of mystery novels for young readers throughout a good chunk of the 20th century, and the time just feels right for a well-made revival of the once very popular and charmingly vintage take on girl power.

DEGENERES Adapted by The Handmaid's Tale scribe Nina Fiore and directed by Katt Shea (of the legendary '90s cult fave Poison Ivy, with Drew Barrymore), the film also stars Linda Lavin and a slew of young, up-and-comers. Now, if we can make one small request: Let's not clutter up the scenery with a bunch of boring Hardy Boys, OK? Thanks. Romeo San Vicente cultivates an air of mystery.

eason 2 of NBC's hit show World of Dance premiered just a few weeks ago with its winning formula still firmly in place. Jenna Dewan has returned to her hosting duties, and the full complement of celebrity judges from the inaugural season — Jennifer Lopez (also executive producer), NE-YO, and Derek Hough (of Dancing with the Stars fame).— are all back to score contestants on five criteria: Performance, Technique, Choreography, Creativity, and Presentation. So what's new this season? . First, the show has expanded to 16 episodes from 10 (and NBC has already signed on to a third season), and the competition now includes five rounds: Qualifiers, Duels, The Cut, Divisional Final, and the World Final. Second, the competitors are now divided

into four divisions: Upper (18 and older; one to four dancers), Upper Team (18 and older, five to 15 dancers), Junior (17 and younger; one to four dancers), Junior Team (17 and younger; five to 15 dancers). Competition begins within each of the four divisions. Solo dancers will compete against duos and crews in an unlimited range of dance, including hip-hop, popping, locking, tap, ballet, break dancing, ballroom, stomping and more, as top dancers from all over the world vie for the title of best dancer and the prize of $1 million. Now, some of those “top dancers from all over the world” just happen to live in South Florida. It was a pleasure to chat with Jonas & Ruby and Vivian Ruiz, two acts that polish their fancy footwork right here in Miami. Catch World of Dance Tuesdays at 10pm on NBC.

Jonas & Ruby

14 and 15, Miami Style: Ballroom Jonas and Ruby have been a team since shortly after Jonas left his native Lithuania to pursue his ballroom career. And this is not their first time at the rodeo, fellas. The pair made it all the way to the quarterfinals on Season 8 of America's Got Talent in 2013. Ruby has even been known to step out on her own. She placed sixth on Season 13 of So You Think You Can Dance two years ago.

After training with Sarasota Cuban Ballet and winning teen dance competitions everywhere from Orlando to Buffalo to Denver, Vivian finally felt confident enough to try out for Season 2 of World of Dance. How long have you been dancing? Nine years. What's the biggest contest you've won? The biggest contest I've won so far would have to be winning 1st Place in the Contemporary Dance Category at YAGP [Youth America Grand Prix] two years in a row. How excited were you when you found out you would be on World of Dance? I was super excited. It was like a dream come true for me. How did you prepare for the audition? I spent a countless number of hours training in the studio. Why should you win World of Dance? Because I have the hard work and determination. I'm very dedicated to my dancing. Dance is everything to me, and winning would be a huge reward.

“Dance is everything to me.” —Vivian Ruiz

How long have you been dancing together? We've been dancing together for six years now, so we know each other pretty well! What's the biggest contest you've won? Our biggest accomplishment is probably holding the United States Champion title for three years. How excited were you when you found out you would be on World of Dance? We were beyond excited! It was an unforgettable experience that we will cherish forever! How did you prepare for the audition? Our preparation for World of Dance was surprisingly short. Although, we're constantly improving our technique in the studio, we prepared our dance in about a week or two! It was a crazy ride, but we managed to pull it off. Why should you win World of Dance? We believe we have what it takes to win World of Dance because our strong partnership and ability to showcase other styles is a great advantage against other competitors. We also bring in a different dynamic and style every time we compete, which is something many dancers are unable to do.

WHITE KICKS Chad King and Jan Axel of A Great Big World 56 | Hotspots.LGBT

W

hile you were crying over that song back in 2014, out musician Chad King and his bestie Ian Axel were figuring out their next move. Could A Great Big World, as they're collectively known, have lightning strike twice in the form of another colossal Christina Aguilera-assisted tearjerker? After “Say Something,” which featured Aguilera's harmonious flutters, peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in late 2013 and won the threesome a 2015 Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, even they realized that that kind of lightning-in-a-bottle success was likely . inimitable. Still, the crushing ballad gave considerable clout to the two albums that followed it: their 2014 debut, Is There Anybody Out There?, and its 2015 follow-up, When the Morning Comes. With a third album on the way, and its lead bop, “Younger,” out now, we caught up with King to discuss writing about dressing in his mom's clothes as a kid, finding their true selves, and how Paris Is Burning inspired a musical moment. On “Younger,” you revel in the nostalgia of playing with Barbies and doing fashion shows. What were these fashions like? Did you strut? Yeah, I remember going through my mom's closet with my younger brother and putting on her heels, putting on her dresses, and stuffing the dress with padding to make it look like we had boobs. Then, as a whole family, we'd sit down on the living room couch, and me and my brother would come out and just work it. And they'd all cheer for us. I never thought I would be singing about that, but I'm glad it made its way into the music. How did the song come about? “Younger” was actually the first song we wrote for this album, and it morphed into this tune where it's like, let's tap into our childhood: what we remember, why we were so happy then, and what was so exciting liberating about being that kid. I remember playing house with my neighbor down the street, playing with her Barbies and feeling like no one was going to come and hurt me. I was safe to be and act however I wanted to act, and there was just something so freeing about that moment. After two albums, why self-title this one? Is There Anybody Out There? was a collection of songs that me and Ian had written over the first five years of our friendship. One of those songs was

Even though “Say Something” was a megapop hit, the first album it appeared on was rooted in a musical-theater sound. Have you worked your fondness for theater into this album? Yeah, absolutely. “Younger” is a really good example. It's so theatrical, narratively. I feel like we write really well to a narrative, or in that context of storytelling. We have a song called “When I Am King” that is also super-theatrical and Queen-like that I'm really excited about. This record has theatricality all over it. And how did the iconic queer film Paris Is Burning [about the drag-ball scene in New York in the late '80s] become the 58 | Hotspots.LGBT

inspiration for “Hooray for You”? I showed everyone the clip of [drag legend] Dorian Corey at the very end of Paris Is Burning having that moment in front of the mirror, where she's applying her makeup and saying, “You don't have to bend the whole word. I think it's better to just enjoy it.” And at the end she goes, “If you shoot an arrow and it goes real high, hooray for you.” And we did something really special with that moment: We took a sample and made it into a track of its own that I'm really excited for people to hear. It's exciting to have this on a record — like, this will live forever. And also to push Paris Is Burning because that movie is iconic and brilliant, and I only just found out about it last year. I imagine after “Say Something” the pressure to top yourselves or reach that same level again was immense. In the moment, we would never say there's pressure. I'd be like, “No, we're just writing!” I'd probably say that. “Yeah, we love writing!” But looking back and reflecting on how we wrote with all sorts of pop writers and pop producers, it's very clear we were going through the motions of creating something under this pressure. Even if it was subconscious, there was this pressure, for sure. That song feels like an anomaly. It feels like a monster. It feels like something that happens once in a lifetime. So, to follow that up is — yeah, there's a ton of pressure. Did you have people around you asking you to recapture that magic? Yeah, we had a couple moments where people were like, “We want you to write 'Say Something' for us.” So we had to go through the motions of writing another song like “Say Something.” There's actually one song that we have — oh, I don't know if it's official. I can't tell you. But we have a song that looks like it's gonna be making another artist's record, and their original briefing to us was, “We love the emotion behind 'Say Something.' Can you give us a song like this?” So, me and Ian tapped into that, and it looks like we'll be getting the song on his record. But I think “Say Something” came from such an emotionally

PHOTOS: (above and on previous spread) Epic Records

“Say Something,” and “Say Something” had the life that it had, and all of a sudden we found ourselves in this pop world. We also found ourselves feeling a bit of pressure to stay in that world, and that's when the second album came out. Then the second record did what it did — or didn't do. And then it came time for the third album. We were like, let's go back to writing for ourselves again. We took six months to write this album, and we are so proud of these songs. We feel this is the most true to who we are — and that our sound or music has ever been — so it made sense to us that it would be a selftitled record. It was like, “OK, this is A Great Big

lives to enter another country where they have a chance to be safe and make a life for themselves. This is why so many Americans support Trump and Sessions and the whole hateful lot. We shouldn't lose sight of the fact that there is a large number of Americans who are thrilled with what is going on. This is what they wanted. Sessions has dreamed of this moment since he was knee high to a racist. Mind you, it's not the majority. The majority of Americans didn't vote for Trump and do not support these policies. Most people around the world are horri ied by what is happening. And yet, besides voting these white supremacist scumbags out of of ice, what can you do? Well, irst, you must do that. You must vote. You must help others register to vote. You must help the campaign of a candidate who actually stands for this country's democratic values. Sitting on the sidelines is not an option unless you want to be complicit in this ugliness.

Consider taking to the streets. As this column goes to press, tens of thousands of Americans are preparing to rally on June 30 — in Washington D.C. and around the country — in opposition to the Trump administration splitting up families at the border.. I hope you were among them. If you weren't, don't worry. Sadly, there will be plenty of opportunity to oppose this administration's many bigoted, inhumane immigration policies. Trump knows that these policies play well with his base, and he's surrounded by sycophants and watches only Fox News. He needs to see that we are watching him.

Sessions has dreamed of this moment since he was knee high to a racist.

HOT BODIES

Skip the Red Bull 6 Things You Can Do to Banish Fatigue and Boost Your Energy Levels by Tom Bonanti

Y

ou know the feeling well. All day you've been looking forward to hitting the gym, but by 3pm, you're so exhausted you start to wonder whether you'll be able to drag your butt to the car for the drive home. Or maybe the only time you can schedule exercise is early morning, but every time that alarm jolts you awake at 5am, you roll over and opt for another hour or two of shut-eye because you're too pooped to face a new day. This might sound crazy and counterintuitive, but exercise can give you more energy and cut fatigue in the long run. It's true: Once you start moving around, your body revs up its energy production to meet this increased demand. Here are six exercises that will give you the kick in the pants that you need to light a fire under your workout regime — and increase your energy level throughout the day.

74 | Hotspots.LGBT

1. Power Walking When you're tired, you may not feel that you have the energy to take a walk or hop on your favorite cardio machine, but 15 to 20 minutes of sustained motion can increase your overall energy level dramatically. Low- to moderateintensity power walking is great. Outdoor walks are even better because the fresh air and sunshine can help you kick daily stress and drudgery to the curb.

2. Stretching 10 to 15 minutes of stretching per day can help increase flexibility (a vital component of overall

fitness), alleviate tension, and refresh your energy levels. Start with large muscle groups first: Stretch back, chest, legs, core, arms, and legs. You don't have to master any sophisticated form of stretching, just choose movements that stretch out muscles (not to the point of serious discomfort), hold for 20 seconds, and move on to the next body part.

3. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) Don't be scared by this popular training technique. The concept behind HIIT is simple: Perform several movements or exercises at pretty high intensity interspersed with brief recovery periods. For example: Do two minutes of stretches and crunches on the mat; follow this with two minutes of jumping jacks and running in place; proceed with two minutes of push-ups and planks; hop on the treadmill for five minutes at a moderate pace; hit the weights and do biceps curls and dips off the bench for three minutes; skip rope and hit a speed bag for three minutes; stretch and breathe on the mat to unwind. Rest for three minutes, then, if you're up to it, repeat the cycle.

This might sound crazy and counterintuitive, but exercise can give you more energy and cut fatigue in the long run.

4. Rowing You can't go wrong with rowing. You can rev up your energy levels and hit every major muscle group. Rowing really is an amazing low-impact workout!

5. Strength Training Pumping iron can be a daunting prospect when you're dog tired, but if you stick with the basics (bench presses, military presses, deadlifts, and squats) at a moderate intensity, your body starts producing endorphins that produce a natural high and your energy will soar!

6. Swimming This is a wonderful low-impact form of cardio that is therapeutic for the joints and soothes tired, sore muscles. Swimming is a surefire way to cool off, relieve stress, and recharge energy levels. Tom Bonanti is a certified fitness trainer and licensed massage therapist with his own gym and studio, Pump'n Inc. 1. Lint Roller

Alas, the tumble dryer doesn't catch everything in its trap; rogue lint, an insidious scourge, can and will make it onto your clothes, especially cotton and cashmere. A lint roller quickly and easily removes stray fibers and fluff so you can step out looking fresh. Pro tip: Give your garment the once-over with a lint roller before you put it on; it's hard to roll your back when you're already wearing a linty top.

own (and use!) to keep your wardrobe in tip-top shape and preserve your favorite pieces.

2. Seam Ripper

2

This may seem like an odd item to own if you're not a tailor, but it will come in handy. When you buy a suit, the pockets are usually stitched closed, and the seam ripper is the perfect tool to use to separate the fabric; using your hands to remove that thread could tear the jacket's pockets. Other uses for the seam ripper include removing sewn-in tags from t-shirts. If they're bothersome, you can take them out with the seam ripper without damaging the neck of the tee.

3. 3. Needle Needle and and Thread Thread

7. T-shirt Folding Board

To help reduce the wrinkles in your tees — so you don't have to break out the iron as often — pick up a t-shirt folding board like the ones used in retail stores to make all the displays look nice and neat. You can find one for cheap on eBay, or, if you're handy, you can make your own T-shirt folding board out of cardboard. A small-butsturdy plastic cutting board for the kitchen will work just as well, too.

8. Clothes Shaver

Fuzz balls are different than lint. Lint can be removed with a roller — or tape, even. But fuzz balls (known as pilling) cling to clothing because they're physically attached to the fabric. They're usually on the underside of your sweaters and jackets because your arms rub against the fabric, resulting in pilling. A battery-powered shaver uses rotating blades (just like an electric shaver for your face) to trim off the pills, and then deposits them into an attached compartment that can be removed and emptied.

10. Wooden Hangers

9. Shoe Stuffers

9

In order to maintain the shape of your shoes, stuff them while you're not wearing them. You can buy wooden shoetrees, but you'll need several pair to stuff all your nice shoes — and that can get expensive. Instead, take old newspaper, crumple it up, and stuff it in the shoes. It's a quick, easy, and cheap fix that'll help make your best footwear last.

10

If your closet is a hodgepodge of plastic and wire hangers, it's time for an upgrade. Wooden hangers are expensive compared to their plastic cousins, but the benefits outweigh the cons of lesser-quality hangers. The biggest benefit of wooden hangers is their sturdy structure. While flimsy hangers bend, bow, and break, wooden versions stay firm and

give your clothing the support it needs to keep its shape. Wooden hangers are also appropriate for all clothing, while wire hangers can only handle lighter items. Plus, they make your closet look like a man keeps his clothes in it, and that's worth the price right there.
