Woof! Mike Ruiz Serves Sexy HeartThrobs and Adorable Hounds
By Paul Hutnick ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| hat happens when you pair the cutest pups on earth — who just happen to be in need of forever homes — with beautiful, hunky men? The year's most buzzed-about calendar, that's what. Photographer Mike Ruiz's 2018 calendar, “HeartThrobs and Hounds,” is thirteen months of perfection (1 bonus month in 2019) that will put a smile on your face every day of the new year.
Mike Ruiz is best known for being a former judge on RuPaul's Drag Race but he's also a celebrity photographer whose clients include Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, and even legendary pop icon Prince. In addition to his work in Hollywood, Ruiz has made a name for himself shooting the world's top male fitness models. “I admire men who have sculpted their bodies into works of art,” he says. “It takes incredible skill and knowledge to form human tissue to near perfection. Photographing their
work is quite gratifying to me.” The hunks in “HeartThrobs and Hounds” are some of the biggest male fitness models working today including James Ellis, Dragos Sykos, and cover-model Mike O'Hearn. Each has a personal link to animal advocacy. Mike Ruiz, too, is an animal rescue rockstar. He saved Oliver, a beautiful pit bull who had been left for dead, five years ago. Through Oliver, Mike was inspired to help other dogs like him by fusing his two passions — photography and dogs in need — together into an annual calendar. The dogs that appear in the calendar were chosen at random and represent only a fraction of those in need. “We get multiple calls and emails every week from people looking to re-home or surrender their pets,” says Nancy Flint, the founder of Fur Friends in Need, a foster-based rescue organization. “We try our best to help as many of these animals as possible so they do not end up at kill shelters. We also reach out to local shelters to see if we can match animals with appropriate foster homes before it's too late.” “That's why we urge people to consider fostering animals,” she continues. “The more fosters we have, the more animal lives we can save.”
Mike Ruiz
Michele Schafer from Lilo's Promise Animal Rescue, agrees. “When a person fosters a dog, they are saving the dog they welcome into their home and the dog that takes that dog's place in the shelter.” Flint and Schafer hope the calendar helps to shatter misconceptions about rescue animals. “People assume it is the fault of the animal that it ended up being abandoned,” says Flint. “90% of our animals have no issues whatsoever. It's their humans who have failed them." Every dollar made from the sale of the “HeartThrobs and Hounds” 2018 calendar will go directly to Fur Friends in Need and Lilo's Promise animal rescues.

What is TRUVADA for PrEP? TRUVADA for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a prescription medicine that is used together with safer sex practices to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This use is only for HIV-negative adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1. To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1, talk openly with your healthcare provider about your sexual health. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP? Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must be HIV-negative before you start taking TRUVADA for PrEP. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1. The best chatter on social media this week
“I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man.” Grammy-winning singer SAM SMITH in a candid interview with London’s Sunday Times newspaper.
“It just seems to me it’s almost frightening the number of people who are living [with HIV] that are potential carriers — well, they are carriers — but, potential to spread. Whereas in the past they died more readily and then at that point they are not posing a risk.”
Georgia State Representative BETTY PRICE, asking about the legality of quarantining HIV positive individuals to stop the spread of HIV, at a committee meeting to address “Barriers to Access Adequate Healthcare.
“In Florida, we know that leaders don’t look to grade themselves in the middle of a crisis — they aim to save lives and restore normal order… The truth is that the President has given himself an A on a quiz he never took, while the people of Puerto Rico face a test of willpower and endurance he may never understand.” PHILIP LEVINE, mayor of the City of Miami Beach, responding to President Trump giving himself an “A” for the response to the crisis in Puerto Rico after the island was devastated by a hurricane. Reports are that three-quarters of homes remain without electricity and water is still in short supply.
“It’s disturbing and sickening that Donald Trump would ‘joke’ about Mike Pence wanting to ‘hang them all’ in reference to LGBTQ people. Hate violence is tragically still a fact of life for LGBTQ people across this country, even without Donald Trump and Mike Pence helping to fan the flames.” Human Rights Campaign (HRC) President CHAD GRIFFIN in a statement, responding to a report that Donald Trump “joked” about VP Mike Pence wanting to hang LGBTQ people.

“That’s right… He has gotten so much done for us! He’s making America great again. Back to 1950 we go. Praise the Cheto! Why, in just six months he’s taken away the right to clean, fresh air and water from us all. He’s made facts, math and science irrelevant in teaching. He’s made racism and anti-Semitism acceptable among “good people” again. And more importantly, all those coal miners are all back to work and auto workers are pumping out new cars on the assembly lines in Detroit. I can’t wait to see the savings in my health care plan for 2018. Increased deductibles and less coverage.”
GEORGE HEHNER, Fort Lauderdale resident, on Facebook, responding to a comment from a female Trump supporter suggesting Trump has “actually gotten quite a bit accomplished” so far during his presidency. 28 | Hotspots.LGBT

It may not seem that the LGBT community has a lot to be thankful for this year. Whether it's revoking transgender rights to serve in the military, arguing in federal court that it's completely OK to fire someone for being gay, or maintaining that religious belief trumps the civil rights of the LGBT community, the current administration continues to demonstrate their opposition to the LGBT community. But we've battled homophobia before and we'll do it again, all to the beat of our own drum. Here are the latest tracks playing on gay dance floors this season of thanks.

“Crash”
Billy Winn “Crash” is the first single from out artist Billy Winn since he split with his record label two years ago. Written and produced by Billy and Mark A. Barrie of the production team Madscience, the song is a super intense, emotional, and dynamic electro pop record, similar to his previous hit records, “Cruel Intentions” and “He Won't Do,” but with less of a dance focus. The song marks a true evolution for Winn as he begins to explore deeper topics of love that he says he has been experiencing as he's grown older and, supposedly, wiser. “Crash” is about the complications of love, especially when it's one sided. It poses the question: What is one supposed to do when feelings develop for Mr. Wrong? It's a question many of us ask, especially today when casual hook-ups are as easy as picking up your phone.
“#FixYoFace”
Epiphany Mattel Transgender Hip hop artist Epiphany Mattel is known for being raw, unapologetic, and provocative. In her latest beat-driven club banger, she takes aim at pretty people who make themselves ugly at clubs by brandishing that resting bitch face that makes them unapproachable. It's a party bitches. Lighten the hell up, otherwise you'll have Epiphany to deal with. And trust, you don't want to mess with this dangerous beauty who stands strong in her truth, even if it offends others. While she rarely starts trouble, Epiphany Mattel isn't afraid to finish it.
“Run”
Music Bear Tony Banks
. xob taeb . xob taeb . xob taeb
Featuring EarthTone and Yo! Majesty's JwlB The second single from the hip hop bear's upcoming Yes, Homo album has a driving beat that is meant to move booties while enlightening hearts and minds. Produced by the artist and featuring out rappers EarthTone and Yo! Majesty's JwlB, the House infused HipHop jam was inspired by today's racially charged climate. Music Bear Tony Banks uses rhymes to urge fans to get up and do something: create community programs, get to the polls and vote for politicians that are going to unite municipalities and stop police brutality and harassment once and for all. It's a message for the black community, the muslim and LGBT community, as well as all communities that are feeling victimized by the heavy and often unfair hand of the law.
“Stars”
Kristine W Kristine W returns to the dance floor with “Stars,” the second single from her soon-to-be released album. With soaring vocals, an infectious beat and heavy bass line, “Stars” is the definition of party track. However, listeners who peel back the high energy layers will hear a deep and important message beneath its surface. The song is about coping with life's difficult transitions: a good friend moving away, children leaving to chase their dreams, or a loved one dying. Change is inevitable and in “Stars,” Kristine reveals the emotional rollercoaster she has been going through with her recent divorce. The song is a beautiful reminder that like the stars that fall from the sky, the people who disappear from our lives will always remain in our hearts. We should celebrate the light they brought — and always will bring — to our lives. Hotspots.LGBT | 41
“Remixes”
Black Stereo Faith House music legends Ultra Naté and Quentin Harris are back with the first package of remixes from their alt funk collaborative album, Black Stereo Faith. The collection features “I'm Too Sexy (Touch This Skin)” and “SNL,” reworked and reimagined by some of the biggest DJ/producers on the planet including David Morales, Benji Candelario, Vjuan Allure and Craig C. The standouts are David Morales' dark, subby, and full-of-attitude version of “I'm Too Sexy” and Benji Candelario's Frankie Knuckles-esque version of “SNL” (featuring Inaya Day and Darryl D'Bonneau). Also, have to give props to Vjuan Allure for serving some raw, dramatic Baltimore beats for the ballroom queens in his version of “I'm Too Sexy”.

The Hound
Sometimes bad things have to happen before good things can, as The Hound demonstrates in his new song that he wrote while in the midst of an incredibly toxic relationship. The electronic pop track is passionate and heartfelt. It examines how relationships define us and how whether it's with a lover, a friend, or family, the worst ones can be impossible to let go of. The music video, starring adult film performer Adam Ramzi — and banned from Instagram for being “too sexually explicit” — brings the song's lyrics to extraordinary life, featuring some incredible dance moves by The Hound and Ramzi.
b taeb . xob taeb . xob taeb . xob taeb “Internash”
DEX Experience DEX Experience is serving fierceness worldwide with the release of “Internash,” the first single from his upcoming album. Combining catchy lyrics with bitchy base, the empowering, feel good, party track has a 90's sound set against a sassy, modern day kick. Written and produced by DEX and DJ Omri Anghel, the song is about embracing the world as your playground. It draws inspiration to a happier time for the LGBT community, when pre-millennium supermodels mesmerized, amused and enthralled every time they walked the runways and graced the covers of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar magazines.

It is not often that we stroll into restaurants these days where the customers aren't screaming at one another in an effort to be heard over the din of background music and bad acoustics. Yet, last week, we dropped into EAT Wilton Manors on the Drive, and discovered an oasis of relative quiet, with just enough excitement to suggest that the former home of Scarfone's Coal 62 | Hotspots.LGBT
Fired Pizza is finding its own regular fan base. To be sure, the place has its share of noise from the open kitchen and R&B music. But the customers were too busy just smacking their lips at platters piled high with Italian specialties to spend much time gabbing, We started our meal with some Pan Seared Ali Tuna ($12.95), seasoned to perfection and cooked
medium rare. Topped with sesame seeds and sliced ginger, the taste was delectable while the fish was tender to a fault. This appetizer is on the list of specials, but is routinely available. Another dish that frequents the specials menu is Dijon Chicken Breast ($18.95). It features three (yes, three) flattened and breaded chicken breasts with a creamy Dijon sauce, accompanied by a super dollop of smashed potatoes. We could label this a dish as begging for a take-home box, but we would be repeating ourselves, since every portion served at EAT Wilton Manors is large and ambitious. Normally, the risk of getting a tough New York Strip Steak outside of a steak house is high. It is included on the dinner menu here at $25.95, but, on the night we went, was reduced as a special to $19.99. It was just too good of an opportunity to pass up, especially given that, coming from the short loin of the cow, this should be an extremely tender (and pricey) piece of beef. EAT Wilton Manors did not disappoint. This cut of meat was made fmous at Delmonico's in Manhattan in the 1800s as Delmonico Steak, and it was the pride of that legendary establishment—right along with Wedge Salad and Baked Alaska, don't you know. At EAT, it comes piled high with more smashed potatoes and, on this night, delectable asparagus. It was tender, flavorful and cooked to a perfect medium-rare. Quite the deal, which we suspect
won't be offered at that price often. Another excellent choice from the regular menu is the Pork Ribeye ($17.95). It is served boneless, with a cranberry reduction sauce that is just this side of being sweet. Sliced ¾ inch thick and taken up the better part of the plate, this entrée packs value and flavor, and receives our ***** rating for the evening. EAT Wilton Manor is the latest effort of The Manors' Paul Hugo who knows how to make a success of things on the Drive. He should be no less lucky with his newest endeavor, especially given co-owner Chef Rosario's expansive menu offered in a space that is large enough to make for a very special evening. From sandwiches ($9.95-$13.95) to burgers ($10.95-$12.95) to calamari ($11.95) and Spinach and Artichoke Dip ($11.95). Oh, and yes, like Scarfone's before it, EAT Wilton Manors has woodfired New York Pizza. It is thin crusted with that ohso-burnt taste that proves the fire is real and hot. So too is the flavor. It is available by the (large) slice at $3.25. Buy a whole 19” pie and pay $17.95 for
cheese, or $18.95 with pepperoni. Additional toppings are available at $1.50 or $2.00 each. And don't get us started on the desserts. You must try a slice of their housemade Tiramisu. It is the best we have tasted (and we've tasted dozens). At $7.95, it is worth every extra calorie. EAT Wilton Manor is open daily for lunch and dinner (except Mondays) until 10 pm, has a full bar, and an extravagant Sunday buffet. Come early, stay late, and ask for the manager, Randy. He will treat you right. Tell him HotSpots! said so.

nding decades of speculation that he was gay, actor Kevin Spacey has finally come out of the closet amidst accusations he made sexual advances against Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp when he was a teen. Spacey apologized on Twitter but said he could not recall the incident from 31 years ago. “If I did behave in the way he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology, for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior,” Spacey tweeted. Rapp said the incident happened in 1986 when he was 14 and Spacey was 26. Faced with this allegation, Spacey used the opportunity to admit that he was, indeed, gay – but private — resulting in immediate backlash 68 | Hotspots.LGBT

I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man.” “No, Kevin Spacey. You don’t get to use your sexuality as a distraction from sexual assault. You just threw the gay community under the bus,” tweeted #ThePersistence. Comedian Wanda Sykes tweeted, “No, no, no, no, no! he Trump Presidency has truly redefined “breaking news” in the most literal way. Every day there is a new harm, a new insult, a new degradation heaped onto the American people. If you feel exhausted, disgusted, and helpless, well then, know that they’re getting to you. All is working as planned. If you’re a straight, white male then this chaos may be working to your advantage, assuming that you don’t give a rip for the rights of minorities and women. But for everyone else, these are pretty terrifying times. Trump, who actually claimed that he’d be great for the gays, has decidedly not been great for the gays. From his cabinet members to the extremist judges he’s been nominating, Trump has managed to assemble an anti-LGBTQ dream team. And the MVP of this team is clearly Mike Pence. From the moment Trump announced his VP pick, anyone who’d been deluding themselves into thinking that Trump would be or could be a friend to LGBTQ people should have woken up. Pence has a long history of working against equality for LGBTQ people. He opposes marriage equality and discrimination protections for LGBTQ people. He believes in harmful reparative therapy and, in fact, while he was Indiana governor, sought to use HIV/AIDS prevention money for gay “cure” therapy instead. This attitude, coupled with an anti-science rejection of needle exchanges and a slash and burn approach to health funding led to an HIV outbreak in Indiana. Anyway, Pence’s horrible awfulness is well documented. You can Google it. The new layer of this sh*t sandwich is that Trump apparently thinks Pence’s hatred of LGBTQ people is totally hilarious. In Jane Mayer’s New Yorker piece titled “The Danger of President Pence,” there’s a description of a meeting, attended by both Trump and Pence, where LGBTQ rights comes up. According to the article, Trump took the opportunity to try his hand at
DONALD TRUMP & MIKE PENCE stand-up comedy material. “Don’t ask that guy,” Trump joked, pointing at Pence, “he wants to hang them all!” Now, you might say, it’s not like Pence literally wants to lynch LGBTQ people. So no harm, no foul, right? Wrong. The fact that the President of the United States cares so little for the LGBTQ people of this country that the premise of our summary execution is fodder for a joke is beyond alarming. What this signals is that the anti-LGBTQ policies that Pence wants to see enacted will face no resistance from Trump. Granted, they never did. Trump will rubber stamp any and all moves to demean and dehumanize LGBTQ people. As George Takei put it, “Not sure what’s more disturbing, that Donald would joke about such a thing or that he would pick a man with these views as his number 2.” More disturbing still, is that millions of Americans voted for this hateful shit show. And nobody is going to get out of this mess squeaky clean. D’Anne Witkowski is a poet, writer and comedian living in Michigan with her wife and son. Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I At Kravis Center for the Performing Arts • NOV 7 - 12 By Scott Holland
Other than this role, what has been your favorite role? I have 2. I played Chip Tolentino in a national tour of Spelling Bee. I met the actor who plays the “King” in this production of “The King and I” on that tour. It was comedy, it was fun and it zipped along and was different every night. My other favorite role was Paul in a “Chorus Line.” It came in a time in my life when I was thinking about what I wanted to be and say as an artist and this role was very informative and good for me professionally and emotionally.
What is your Fantasy role to play?
George in “Sunday in the Park with George,” because it has always spoken to me as an artist. I understand it and I love it. Every time I see it, I learn something more about both the character and the show, and it allows me to focus on my experiences as an artist.
What should the South Florida audiences expect from this production of the King and I?
wo worlds collide in the Lincoln Center Theater production of this musical, directed by Bartlett Sher. One of Rodgers & Hammerstein's finest works, The King And I boasts a score that features such beloved classics as “Getting to Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful.” Set in 1860's Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. The King and I was the winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, and Best Actress. It was a pleasure to sit down with Kavin Panmeechao who plays Lun Tha for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

Were you always a performer, even as a kid or when did you get “the bug”? I performed as a kid in local community theaters. In my teenage years, I quit acting for a while, and then I went to undergrad at UCLA for theater and I have been acting ever since.
What was your first professional/paid gig? When I was 12 I did a Christian video series called the “Bible Man,” which is kind of like Barney meets the Power Rangers meets the Bible. 80 | Hotspots.LGBT
You are going to expect all the glorious costumes, beautiful music, and fantastic sets, but you will also come away with a show that's right for everyone in the family. It's about 2 different cultures trying to work together and finding common ground. We are really excited to come to Florida and our whole cast has been looking forward to this.
Kravis On Broadway is sponsored by Jim and Judy Harpel and Diann and Thomas Mann. ontrary to popular belief, some things _do_ impress Shania Twain. The country-pop icon and paragon of leopard print has great admiration for her LGBTQ fans, who she says have become guiding lights in her own life. Twain's inspiring story is one of survival, from her childhood hardships while growing up in the small town of Timmins, Ontario, where she raised her three younger siblings after her parents died in a car accident in 1987, to her 2009 divorce from Robert “Mutt” Lange, producer of Twain's 1997 crossover behemoth “Come on Over”. The best-selling country album of all time was a gamechanger with an impressive track record – 40 million copies sold globally, 50 weeks atop the Billboard country charts over three years, 11 singles released – that Twain still champions in the female-artist arena.
86 | Hotspots.LGBT
Fifteen years after dropping her last juggernaut, 2002's “Up!”, Twain, 52, is again demonstrating slay status to her legions of loyal, boot-stompin' queer fans. Even a neurological voice disorder called dysphonia couldn't keep the genre subverter, who once thought she'd never sing again, from recording her long-overdue fifth LP, “Now”. Released in September, Twain wrote every song, and her shiny résumé got even shinier when the album instantly seized the No. 1 spot on the Billboard albums _and_ country charts. Country-pop's comeback queen was an open book
during our recent conversation, speaking passionately and candidly about her LGBTQ activism at the onset of her country career in 1993, having to “agree to disagree” with those who aren't progay, and bringing drag queens and Budguzzlin' bros together with “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” But, also, you don't get Shania Twain on the phone without reminiscing on 1998's _VH1 Divas_, when Twain shared the stage with an epic mix of icons – Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Gloria Estefan – for one of the most legendary, gay-loved nights in diva (and hair) history.
Do you have enough leopard print gloves to go around for all the gays to partake in celebrating your comeback? (Laughs) I should make them, right? What do you think would be the preferred fabric? Silk or…?
Velour.
Yeah, like, velvet.
We need a million of those by tomorrow. But first, Shania, after all these years, how do you explain your connection to the LGBTQ community? I can't really explain my connection in any sort of theoretical way to anyone. But I would say my intentions are to inspire and connect with people, to be relatable then and now. I think that it is what resonates – we relate to one another, we relate to struggle, and then surviving struggle and celebrating who we are and what we are and appreciating that as a community of people regardless of what it is. Just celebrating together to the anthemic nature of some of those songs, and on this new album there are several like that as well.
Is there something specific you hope to convey to LGBTQ audiences with this album?
Surviving against the odds. A song like “I'm Alright” – just that statement there and telling yourself, “I'm alright. I've made it through. I've survived.” And with a fist-in-the-air attitude, with conviction.
What was your introduction to the gay community?
I work with a lot of gay people and they're just a part of my almost daily family world. So, they're just part of my friends and my community. I guess more when I started to become successful, I was really surrounded by more creative people, and there are so many creative people in this
industry who are gay, both men and women. It just becomes the norm.
During some of your rough patches, did you get any sage advice from your gay friends?
Oh, I get good advice from gay friends all the time! (Laughs) I think more than anything I'm inspired by the spirit of where the gay community is right now and that conviction to be who you are. I love standing up for that. It's just so important to be transparent and open about who you are and to not hide behind fear.
Have you clung to that sentiment as a way to push past your own personal pain?
Completely! I mean, my whole transition into where I am now in this moment has been facing fears and taking that leap of faith myself, and that would be my advice to anyone out there. A gay person who has been living behind their fears and then makes that courageous decision to start living as who they really are and stop pretending and embrace it – it takes a lot of courage.
“...we relate to one another, we relate to struggle, and then surviving struggle and celebrating who we are and what we are and appreciating that as a community of people regardless of what it is.” For me, I've just learned that there's no time to waste. You need to take that leap and be who you are, and we're in a society now that is making it easier. We still have a long way to go, but there are a lot more outlets. But the gay community – and minority communities in general – are always fighting. I have a song on the album called “Swingin' with My Eyes Closed” and it's a fun party song, but the true depth of the song is about even when you can't see what is in front of you, you still have to move forward. You can't move backwards; you gotta keep moving forward and fighting for that freedom to exercise independence and courage.
There couldn't be a better time for a song like that. In 2013, you tweeted about the Supreme Court overturning the Defense of Marriage Act, saying, “Congrats to everyone celebrating equality today in the U.S.
Hotspots.LGBT | 87
#loveislove.” Why is it important for you to take a stand on gay rights and other LGBTQ issues? I just feel very saddened by any kind of oppression in our society in today's day and age. I mean, it's so negative. Equality should be a no-brainer, automatic, all the way around. We need to have mutual respect all the way around. Supremacy of any sort is just poison. I just feel like we're not above each other in any way and mutual respect and an admiration for an individual's abilities, talents, heart, commitment – I mean, what does that have to do with any minority status that we might be labeled with today, whatever that may be? Certainly, I know that gays feel that.
How does it feel knowing that your songs “Forever and For Always” and “From this Moment On” have probably been the first dance at a number of same-sex marriages? Awww! That's lovely. It's so lovely. But love is beautiful, and music is very much a part of our lives and monumental moments of our lives.
Because country music has long been deemed conservative in its views, could we speak as openly as we are now about LGBTQ issues at the beginning of your career?
How do you reflect on your gender-bending style, when you donned menswear, in that video? I like to have a sense of humor about everything, especially things that can have a lot of tension. A song like “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” just smacks it dead for me. The audience issue is not something I worry about. I'm respectful to my audience and I appreciate them for relating to my music regardless of their point of view on whatever it is, whether it's politics or social issues. I'm not here to judge.
“You can't move backwards; you gotta keep moving forward and fighting for that freedom to exercise independence and courage.”
I mean, I did. You know what this is really about? This is about pro-equality, this is about pro-mutual respect. And if you're really for those things in life, then why would there be any boundaries? Why would you side where there are? Why would you draw a line there?
In the country community, I think it comes down to the fear of potentially alienating conservative fans. I think everybody has the right to their opinion, and that I would never argue with. That is a huge part of freedom of speech and mutual respect, having the right to your own opinion. If you're not pro-gay, then you're not pro-gay, and we just have to agree to disagree. I would never get into a fist fight with somebody who didn't agree. I just think that would be counterproductive. So, I think we all have to respect each other's opinions on these issues. But, listen, with a song like “Man! I Feel Like 88 | Hotspots.LGBT
a Woman!” – and this is, what, 20 years ago? – I'm over that come a long time ago. A lot of straight men sing “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” just for the sheer entertainment of it. So, I think songs like that have been great, maybe, contributors to bringing us together, if not for anything than just for the common denominator of music and owning that for whatever it means to them, and that breaks down barriers.
Tell me about the first time you encountered a Shania drag queen.
I went to an imposter show in Las Vegas and it was incredible. You brought up the country world and maybe how that might be more conservative, but it's funny, three of the artists that were in the show were myself, Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton. I thought that was so wonderful. It's like, “OK, we're country artists, and we're in there!” Any artist that is, on a visual level, very expressive would make a great imposter night subject!
What is the one thing a queen cannot go without if they truly want to feel like Shania Twain? Probably something leopard print, and I would say a top hat. The boots, for sure!
For gay men everywhere, 1998 was one of the best years as it was the inaugural “VH1 Divas”, the best and most iconic. It doesn't get any better than you, Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin and guest performer Carole King. Of them, who are you still in touch with? Mariah Carey. Celine Dion. We still cross paths – it's great. I always like to catch Mariah when she is live, and Celine too. It was such a wonderful group of ladies, really terrific.
Who most lived up to the diva title during the show?
I think Mariah had the biggest hair, so probably her. (Laughs)
You were second, I think.
I was! I said, “OK, I gotta look at Mariah's hair. I want to try for it to be as big as hers,” because she has this naturally big, amazing hair. So I'm like, “Come on, let's go for it. I know Mariah's gonna have bigger hair than me, so I'm gonna go for it and have fun with it.” She has that hair that I want, that naturally big hair with this gorgeous wave and those ringlets.
When you all performed “Natural Woman” as your encore, I wasn't sure who was stealing the spotlight: Mariah's hair or Aretha. (Laughs) I know! Nobody can kill Aretha's spotlight.
If you did another “Divas”, what other diva would you want to sing alongside? Rihanna, for sure. She's just so awesome. I love her voice; I never get tired of it. Never, never. And we hear it so much on the radio, right? She's every second song on the radio and I just never get tired of it. Even with “Love on the Brain” – I mean, it just doesn't get better than that. So, she'd definitely be on my list.
I'm hoping for you and Taylor to team up – our two country-gone-pop queens.
Taylor would be a good one. She'd be a must on “Divas”, for sure. She's awesome. She's such a great creative person and a super songwriter and really uses her brain, so it's lovely to watch her.
Lastly, how many costume changes can gay audiences look forward to when you hit the road? (Laughs) How many would a gay audience find ideal, do you think?
At least 15.
(Laughs) Whoa. OK, that is a friggin' high demand. I'd have to change every two songs!
As long as you bring out the iconic ensembles, no harm, no foul. Gotta have a little flashback moment here and there, yeah!

NEED WOOD
By Woody Miller
CAN HE
BE HAPPY TO SEE ME IF HE’S SLEEPING?
H
ey Woody, Don’t laugh, but my boyfriend f--ks me when he’s asleep. I know he’s not pretending because he snores while he’s f--king me! It doesn’t do a whole lot for my self-esteem. In fact, it’s really getting annoying, and creepy to boot. What can I do? —Nocturnal Omission
y Dear Nocturnal: I’m not laughing. “Sleepsex,” or sex activity that occurs during sleep, is a recognized phenomenon in sleep research. Most sleep researchers don’t believe it’s classifiable as a distinct sleep disorder like sleep apnea (a temporary stoppage of breathing) and think it’s a variant of sleepwalking. Also, they’re leery about classifying the disorder separately because of the potential for abuse. Like you, most partners of sleepsexers find the episodes disturbing. People have broken up about it. But that’s only because they haven’t written to Woody. I say throw caution— and your legs—to the wind. Use the disorder to improve your sex life. There’s a great example of that possibility in a report published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior. A sleepsex sufferer was a lot more aggressive and dominant with his girlfriend during sleep, biting her and talkin’ trash. Though she was disturbed about the whole thing she found that she liked his late-night persona better, so they incorporated it into their daytime sex. You go, girl. What causes “sleepsex?” One theory flashing
its girdle around scientific circles is the classic Freudian repression vibe about doing in dreams what you’re too afraid to do in life. But some researchers think that theory should be a little more modest on account of there’s so much flab around it. They point out that sleepsex doesn’t always occur when a person’s dreaming. There’s just not enough research to make any theory hard enough to penetrate the scientific community. Hey Woody! After I ejaculate, I feel this kind of ache deep in my genitals. It goes away after a few minutes, but I’m worried that something awful’s going on. Please tell me it’s a sign my d--k is gonna grow another 3 inches. Seriously, should I be worried? --- Pain Apres Pleasure Dear Pain: Better to put up with achy balls than chatty post-coital tricks. At least your pain has the good sense to go away after a few minutes. It could be a couple of things, but because you didn’t mention blood in the semen, painful urination, cloudy urine, discharge, swelling or an alarming attraction to rainbow flags, it’s probably nothing to worry about. My advisory panel thinks it’s most likely a perception of pain and relief, the kind you get after a hard workout at the gym when your muscles can get tired and achy. In other words, you’re nuts. If it truly is a medical condition causing the pain, it’s most likely a prostate infection, which can easily be solved with antibiotics. If you suspect rainbow flags might be involved, then the problem is much more serious and will require surgery to sew in a sense of good taste.
