LEGENDARY SOUTH BEACH NIGHTCLUB THROWS EPIC th 19 ANNIVERSARY PARTY IN TRIBUTE TO VERSACE

S

core, the iconic South Beach gay bar, celebrates its 19th anniversary on Saturday, August 12 with what is being described as an epic celebratory event which will pay tribute to South Beach's most famous neighbor: Versace. This year's anniversary party theme “is a throwback to the creator of South Beach '90s glam and everything that defined an era where beauty, music and originality was the name of the game,” according to event organizers. Versace, the word-famous fashion designer, was killed outside his Miami Beach home in 1997 by a 27-year-old man in a crime that was believed to have been inspired by jealousy. Score's 19th anniversary is hot on the heels of pop culture's latest obsession with Versace. Production of FX's Versace American Crime Story, Ryan Murphy's newest docudrama, has attracted big names such as Ricky Martin, Penelope Cruz, and Darren Criss – all making the Versace name hotter than ever, according to Score owners Luis Morera and Billy Kemp. After 19 years Score is indisputably a South Beach institution and has created some memorable moments in South Florida gay history. From epic block parties, huge tea dances, serving as a platform for upand-coming talent and a DJ booth which has hosted some of Hotspots.LGBT | 9

the most famous international DJs, Score has become synonymous with top quality nightlife and entertainment. “When Score opened in 1998, we had no idea it would be so big,” says Billy Kemp, who owns the establishment with Luis Morera. “We were just excited to create a neighborhood bar that would reflect the diverse tastes of the gay community and be a place where music and socializing would be the most uWHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW...

THE PARTY: SATURDAY, AUG. 12 Score will host a VIP reception for friends and family from 9 p.m.-12 a.m. This year's specialty cocktails will be created by Roger Lords, Score's very own bartender and winner of the Ultimate Miami bartender contest. As part of the decorations, Aaron Powell will create a site-specific mural that will captivate the vibe and feel of the party, as well as a photo call/photo booth area to make sure attendees capture the moment with their friends and favorite bartenders. As the night evolves so will the beats. The music of DJ Yazz Burrell will give way to DJ Hansell Leyva who will pump up the night and get the party going for special guest performer Beth Sacks, who will be performing her new hit single “What's Going on.” International DJ/producer Isaac Escalante will take over the DJ booth at 2 a.m., and don't forget the hormone-pumping Score dancers will be dancing for your visual pleasure. This year's event will be sponsored by Ketel One, Smirnoff, Tanqueray, JW Black Label, Captain Morgan, Corona and Red Bull. th Admission to Score's 19 anniversary is $20, but free with VIP invite. For more information go to: Score.net.

important aspect. We are proud that Score has become an iconic destination for music lovers and the LGBT community around the world.” “The Nightlife in South Beach has come a long way since we first started the club,” adds Luis. “Every year we try to improve the club, create different vibes, and constantly evolve our parties so that nothing becomes stale. We are happy to introduce Score to a new generation of club goers, while still generating an excitement that makes our core group of customers feel comfortable when walking through the door.” For this event Score has teamed up with local fashion photographer Juan Pablo Castro to shoot the campaign using Score's greatest assets…their staff. With their beautiful bartenders and security guards and with Ultimate Miami Drag Queen Athena Dion, this year's event will be as sizzling as the South Beach nightlife. Score is located in a legendary location, formerly known as Liquid, on the thriving and infamous promenade Washington Avenue, today considered the South Beach nightlife district. Two decades later, Score today remains the quintessential, gay nightclub experience for both locals and visitors. Enthusiastic club revelers experience state of the art lights and sound as some of the world's most renowned DJs visit and draw hundreds to the dance floor. Muscle boys, trendy fashionistas, Latinos and even polo clad boys, find their own niche among the other beautiful people. Score's art of reinvention has kept them relevant, say its owners, which is a phenomenon in the transient world of the nightlife industry. Finding consistent and creative forms of entertainment is of the utmost importance, while having a courteous and attractive staff only enhances Score's appeal and keeps the locals loyal. You can expect celebrities such as Lady GaGa, Pamela Anderson, Katy Perry, Fergie, Gloria Estefan, LMFAO, Neon Hitch, India, Paulina Rubio, Macy Gray, Queen Latifah, Wynter Gordon, Rosie O'Donnell, Dan & Dean (Dsquared twins), Domenico Dolce, Lance Bass, and Brooke Hogan to drop by and hang out with some of their biggest fans.

The best chatter on Facebook this week

“There are 15,000 patriotic transgender Americans in the U.S. military fighting for all of us. What happened to your promise to fight for them? Republican and Trump supporter CAITLYN JENNER, on Twitter, reacting to President Trump’s ban on transgender people serving “in any capacity” in the military.

I make a living as a female impersonator in the state of Florida. I have hosted all the major events – White Party for 19 years. When I came out as a supporter of Trump, I was blackballed instantly. They got online campaigns. I was thrown off the [White Party] committee. I couldn’t be the emcee anymore. I got death threats. I have lawsuits pending against people. Oh, it’s horrible.”

“I know a transgender drill sergeant, a transgender helicopter pilot, a fixed-wing aircraft pilot, a combat medic, an infantry squad leader – more critical roles than I think people imagine. If all these people are suddenly pulled from their positions and fired overnight, what does that do to unit readiness? What does that do to unit morale when the person you rely on is suddenly gone? Army Captain JENNIFER PEACE, who is transgender, responding to the president’s ban.

“Half his tweets show utter weakness. They are plaintive, shrill little cries, usually just before dawn.” Journalist and former Ronald Reagan speech writer PEGGY NOONAN, in a scorching commentary on Trump’s presidency published in The Wall Street Journal.

Fort Lauderdale Gay Fort Lauderdale has so much to offer

S

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

ince the 1960s everyone has known that Fort Lauderdale is “Where the Boys Are.” But over the past 15 years or so, that saying has really gotten a lot, and we mean a lot, gayer! While tourism as a whole has continued to dominate Florida's economy, LGBT tourism in specific has grown exponentially over the past decade, and Greater Fort Lauderdale has grown into Florida's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and family capital. With more than one million LGBT visitors per year, what used to be a spring break destination and a “well-kept secret” for the LGBT traveler has now become one of the places to be out and proud, not just in South Florida, but on the world stage. So if you live here, or if

The Clubhouse II hosts one of the largest leather nights in town on Tuesday nights, and a night for the bears on Thursdays. WHERE TO GO Fort Lauderdale is known

The Riverwalk leads people to a number of sights throughout the city, such as the Historic (335 SE 6th Ave.), the Museum of Discovery and Science (401 SW 2nd St, Fort Lauderdale), and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW 5th Ave.). Also close by is Las Olas Boulevard, long renowned for its boutiques, galleries and sidewalk cafés. omedians and latenight jokesters Jo Koy and Anjelah Johnson will bring “The BFF Tour” to Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. on Saturday, Aug. 26. Jo Koy has come a long way from his beginnings at a Las Vegas coffee house. Today, Koy sells out shows across the nation with his infectious, explosive energy onstage. The Tacoma, Wash., native credits his mother for his comedic and acting talents. It was with her encouragement that Koy participated in local talent shows and impromptu performances, before inspiring a move to Los Angeles. In 2005, Koy performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and was one of the select few comics to receive a standing ovation. Since then, Koy released two highly rated specials on Comedy Central, “Don't Make Him Angry” and “Lights Out.” In 2017, Koy released his third comedy special, “Jo Koy: Live from Seattle” as a Netflix Original. Koy has also appeared on more than 100 episodes of Chelsea Lately as a season regular roundtable guest. Other appearances include: VH1, World's Funniest Fails, The Joy Behar Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Last Call with Carson Daly and Jamie Foxx: Laffapalooza. Today, the comedian tours across the nation, and can be heard as a weekly guest on the popular podcast, The Adam Carolla Show and his own weekly podcast, The Koy Pond on Podcast One. THE BIRTH OF BON QUI QUI

By Scott Holland

Anjelah Johnson became an internet sensation with her viral video, “Nail Salon” which led to many stand-up, television and film opportunities. In 2007, she joined the cast of MADtv as a series regular, which spawned another internet sensation, Bon Qui Qui.

IF YOU GO...

Tickets cost $85, $65 and $45. All seats are reserved and available at all Ticketmaster outlets online at www.myhrl.com, www.ticketmaster.com or charge by phone: 1-800-745-3000. Doors open one hour prior to show start time. This original character, a disgruntled fast food employee with no filter, has been viewed and replicated by more than 65 million people worldwide. After recording and releasing three songs and two music videos as Bon Qui Qui, Johnson signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records to release a full album titled, “Gold Plated Dreams.” Johnson has guest starred on a number of television shows including The Shield, Ugly Betty, Curb Your Enthusiasm, all while touring her stand-up comedy. In June 2009, Johnson recorded her first one-hour special for Comedy Central and Warner Bros. Records titled, “That's How We Do It.” Her second one-hour special, “The Homecoming Show,” aired on NUVOtv in 2013. In 2014, Johnson recorded her third hour special, “Not Fancy,” a Netflix Original. Johnson has also starred in major films including Our Family Wedding, Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Enough Said and Mom's Night Out.

How did you get cast on MADTv? My managers got me an audition. I had never done sketch comedy prior to that, but I took all these characters that I had written and performed them.

Did you create Bon Qui Qui or did the writers of MadTv?

I had created her prior to getting cast on MadTv, but then I finally got to give her a face, a look, etc. She definitely grew once she was on Madtv and the sky was the limit.

Every time I watch your nail salon bit I die of laughter. I need to know how this came about and how you perfected the voice?

I grew up around a lot of Vietnamese people, and my friends taught me how to say words in

We sat down with Anjelah Johnson for this exclusive Hotspots Interview:

Were you always a ham even as a kid or when did the acting/performing bug bite you? In my early years I was really super shy and then I came out of my shell when I started Pop Warner cheerleading at the age of 8. That got me more comfortable in my own skin, but the real performing bug didn't bite me until many years later.

Vietnamese. I was around their culture all the time, so creating the character was second nature.

I took a joke writing standup comedy class at a church, because it was free. At the end of the class we had to perform at a comedy club. One of the first jokes I ever wrote was the nail salon bit.

Jo Koy and I have a great dynamic and chemistry in our friendship and we share that with everybody. It's a pretty fun and live show. Since we are true friends it comes out in the show.

I did a comedy competition at private Mormon event. They found me on Myspace. It was a Christmas event and I tied for first place and won $600. That was the most amount of money I ever made in my entire life. At that moment, I decided to be a comedian.

Hopefully something good. I have always just been the type of person that thinks the sky is the limit and anything is possible, so we shall see.

When was the first time you did stand-up comedy?

When was the first time you got paid for your comedy?

What should the South Florida audience expect from “The BFF Tour?”

What does the future hold for Anjelah?

Why We're Crazy for Zoe Kazan

The Big Sick actress on her new LGBT-resonant rom-com, fair representation in film and shining a spotlight on gay actors |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

hy aren't more gay men professing their love to Zoe Kazan? I wonder this after doing just that. I dote on the 33-year-old ilm and theater actress – star of Ruby Sparks, Revolutionary Road and HBO's Olive Kitteridge – like she's my best girlfriend. Like we have history. Like we sip cosmos and talk about what it was like to play Meryl Streep's daughter in It's Complicated. I don't know Kazan, but I love that she's so committed to being the best LGBT ally she can be that she follows me on Twitter after ending the interview by telling me, “I will say, just FYI, if you ever feel like I'm not being the greatest ally, please write me on Twitter. I really do feel like I want to do the best job I can.” I love her socially-conscious Twitter feed. Love her latest statement ilm, The Big Sick, based on the real courtship of comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his now-wife, Emily Gordon, and the turmoil it causes when his family discovers Emily is white. I love her longtime boyfriend, the also supremely talented Paul Dano. And when Kazan tells

me she wants to shine a spotlight on gay actors and prefers a gay actor play her romantic interest should she ever play a lesbian role herself, I love that too. “I have never had a gay man profess his love to me before,” Kazan demures, somehow not kidding. Universal gay adoration is inevitable as Kazan calls on powerful, white, cisgender ilmmakers to make a mainstream gay romcom, and talks about Dano's onscreen kiss with Daniel Radcliffe and her very human reason for advocating for the LGBT community. Q: Growing up in Los Angeles, California, what was your earliest connection to the LGBT community? A: I think I was really lucky to – yes, to grow up in a neighborhood that was very diverse and inclusive, and to grow up in a family that had those values. I grew up in the '80s and '90s, not as progressive of a time as now. I'm sure children today have it a lot better. But I went to a really progressive school with a lot of gay teachers and that wasn't treated special or different. It just...

was. Yeah, it just was. And I had two teachers who died of AIDS in the early and mid '90s and that was something that was talked about really openly at my school. The school advocated for them and there was a real warmth and inclusiveness. I grew up a bit outside of the reality of the world at large at that point, so when I got into high school – and, again, this was the '90s – people would be like, “That's so gay,” and it was a rude awakening. Q: Is it fair to say that because of your upbringing you're woke when it comes to gay issues and queer stuff? It is to my bene it as a human that everyone has equal rights and that gay people are treated with respect in the world. That's the way in which it feels like my issue too. It matters deeply to me. So, if that's woke, then I guess so. Not a word I use personally but, yeah, go for it! Q: In addition to a post regarding gay musician Perfume Genius on your Twitter… A: Oh my god, I love Perfume Genius! Honestly, all I wanted was to go to his concert and Paul didn't make it happen. It's a real point of contention in our relationship right now. Q: Ha! You are socially and politically active on Twitter as well, with posts about Planned Parenthood, feminism and one regarding the lack of acknowledgement about Pride month from Trump and his administration. It seems like this is a part of you even though you're not gay. A: I care deeply about it. Part of that is, as a feminist, I always sort of rankle when people

are like, “I have a mother, I have a daughter” – no, you should care about this because of basic fundamental rights for, like, a huge portion of our population. I feel the same way about LGBTQ relations where, like I said, those rights are important to me as a human. After this administration came into power in November, one of the irst things I thought about was actually what happened to gay people under Reagan – the way he ignored the AIDS crisis and how that resulted in so many more deaths, especially in the gay community. And I really felt this thing of, well, yes, our rights recovered from that and our society recovered, but there was a huge cost and not everyone made it. And I thought of that when people were saying, “We'll get through these four years.” I thought, “Well, not everybody will get through it.” And I think a lot of Republicans think of Reagan as a beaming icon of Republicanism. In fact, during the Democratic Convention, Democrats kept referencing him as being a good example of Republican values that Democrats also shared and I was like, does no one remember the AIDS crisis? He f*cked up. Q: We tend to forget what history told us. A: And also what casual bigotry results in. We're saying that right now with the rise of hate crimes in this country and what happened to that poor Muslim girl (17year-old Nabra Hassanen was assaulted and killed on June 18 after leaving a Virginia mosque). I know that's not the direct responsibility of our president, but I am 100 percent certain that the

atmosphere of hate that he has engendered set in those man's actions. Q: Let's talk about compassion, and how your new ilm, The Big Sick, is steeped in it. As a gay man, I found myself completely empathizing with these characters in ways that I didn't think I would. For you, how do you think the overarching themes of forbidden love and familial acceptance of another's partners may resonate with LGBT audiences? A: One thing that really speaks so much to me about the ilm is how much Kumail loves his family. He loves them and part of what is dividing them is a generational divide and their relationship with religion. I would guess that a lot of gay people growing up in really religious communities might feel like their religion could be a source of division between them and their families based on what some Christians, for instance, think of gay people. There's a part of you that feels like they'll love you no matter what and there's a part of you that feels like they might excommunicate you from the family. I'm very moved by the scene in which he tells them that he's not going to leave his family after he reveals himself to them. It feels really potent to me and I'm glad it spoke to you. Q: When do you think we can have two gay people as leads in a major romantic comedy? A: There's no reason that time can't be right now. And considering the current climate in this country politically, vis-à -vis Muslims, this feels as risky a movie as a movie with two gay leads. Maybe it's not. Maybe I'm wrong about that. But Kumail and Emily were brave and told their own story, and a lot of people took a chance on

them and got behind them. And they just tried to do the best job they could of telling their story. They weren't just striving for representation – they had one story they were burning to tell. I would just encourage everyone out there who is like, “Maybe my story isn't mainstream enough,” to just do it. Work really hard. They worked on this script for three years before they brought anybody else on. This movie was started because Kumail was at some standup thing that Judd Apatow saw him at and Judd came up to him and was like, “Come in and pitch me every story that you have.” And Kumail went in and pitched and Judd was like, “That's the one.” We need our allies. Especially people in power like Judd – straight, white men. We need them to step up and be like, “I'm gonna help you tell your story.” So to all the dudes out there in power: I think everybody is hungry to see a story that hasn't been told a million times, and truly there's no reason that can't be right now for many more different kinds of people who are traditionally not as represented in popular culture. Q: Not to put this weight on you, but you did write yourself a lead in Ruby Sparks, so surely you can just make this happen too, right? A: (Laughs) I have to say I do think that my mind is turned more toward, “How can I be more responsible in who I'm putting in the spotlight?” Trying to think about casting that way. Trying to think about my writing that way. But I also think everybody's gotta do it for themselves. I think back to writing Ruby Sparks and it's crazy to me that at 25, or however old I was when I wrote that, that I was like, “Oh, we're gonna get it inanced, we're gonna make this ilm,” without any sense of, “I shouldn't be raising my voice.” I think a lot of people struggle with that, and

it's hard to do. It's not easy. It requires a huge amount of hutzpah, but I think it's more important now than ever. Q: To speak out on issues? A: And to have faith in yourself. One thing that is really hard for me is, I don't think I give myself full power of what I already know. I will ask for permission or feel I need someone to come from on high. So, I would just stress that there are a lot of ways to get a ilm inanced and there are actually so many people now who are inding ways to do that through creative channels, so don't wait for someone to do it for you. Q: If you were to play a lesbian in a romantic comedy, who would you want to cast as your romantic interest? A: Robin Wright. I just love her. Or Juliette Binoche. Some beautiful woman of the generation before me. No – honestly, if I were going to make a movie I would probably ind someone who's actually gay. I think in terms of trying to be a good ally you want to give people an opportunity who don't have the spotlight on them as much and who don't have as many opportunities. I think that some people are marginalized for whatever reason for their sexuality and I would probably make an effort in that direction. Q: Speaking of onscreen gayness: Paul famously kissed Daniel Radcliffe in Swiss Army Man. As his longtime girlfriend, how much say do you have as to which gay men he kisses on screen? A: Very little! And honestly, I didn't even know they kissed in that. I really didn't! And then I saw some clips from it and I was like, “Oh, you guys make out.” And he was like, “No, we don't.” And I go, “Yeah, you do.” He's like, “But we're saving each other's lives!” He said something that made it seem like it was the purest love. (Laughs) It was so sweet. I loved that movie, and I love that scene! Kissing underwater – it's so romantic. Q: You have the best

taste in rom-coms. What kind of romantic comedies won't you do? A: I have to say that when The Big Sick came along I was really not looking to do another romantic comedy. Like, I've done it. Also, it's not really what I got into acting to do. I love to do parts that feel more transformative to me – much more of what I've gotten to do on stage from what I've gotten to do on ilm. Stuff like Olive Kitteridge is where my true hunger lies. So, when they called me and were like, “We have a script. It's a romantic comedy. They want you to come in,” I read it and was like, “Oh, this is so good.” It felt like a movie I hadn't seen before. You know, it's hard sometimes when you're a working actor and you need to make a living. Sometimes a script comes to you and you're like, it's a little bit sexist, there's something kind of racist in here, but I guess I can improv around it or I just won't say that line. But now I have a much harder, faster rule when scripts come to me and the representation doesn't feel totally great, and around gay issues too. I just don't want to be an irreverent torchbearer for something I don't believe in, especially now. Sasha Sommers The World Lights Up When She Smiles! [exclusive interview] by Scott Holland

Tell us about the first time you saw a drag performance? What was the experience like?

When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession?

drag performance! Feeling on top of the world, I went home and got together a new costume and returned the next week and won again! Each week I learned and improved a little from the week before, and 17 weeks in a row I won! The owner of the club finally came to me and said (in a dressing room full of people), 'You have won our contest 17 weeks in a row, congrats! We are proud of you, but you can't do the contest anymore, at least for a while.' I literally felt like I lost my best friend. He continued, 'You can't do the contest anymore, because we want to offer you a cast position... would you be interested?' That night is when it became a profession/career.

The decision was mine, but for me doing drag professionally happened by sheer chance. I had entered a weekly talent contest, more so for fun...and won with a

The first drag show I ever saw was at the Warehouse 2 in Nashville Tenn., and it starred Bianca Page, Rita Ross, Stephanie Wells, Vanessa Del Rio, and Diana Hutton. I was completely mesmerized! It was definitely a wow factor to me -- not so much that I looked at them and wanted to do it, or thought I could do it, but honestly it was captivating. Looking back [I was like] a teenager at their first concert! It was like seeing a very good movie, and when you leave the theater you want to get back in line and buy another ticker to the same show!

looked up to Dena. I have admired her style of drag, her costumes, her ability to capture and keep the attention of any crowd. For those of you who don't know Dena, she is also a plussized entertainer, and has won many nationals titles.

What's your favorite number to perform and why?

I have never really had a favorite number to perform, however, I have several requested numbers that people like to see me perform, and I enjoy doing them.

What's the best thing that has happened to you in drag?

I would have to say the best thing to happen to me in drag would be the fact that people look up to you and admire you. Having drag fans and friends is one thing, but when there are actually people who like you and appreciate what you do, it really means a lot!

What differentiates you from other queens. What makes you unique?

I don't know that there is any one thing that makes me unique. However, I have been an emcee for many events and pageants, and have been told many times, I should have been a comedian. I have captured many audiences with certain performances and to give other girls their credit... several girls have done the same thing for me. I guess what makes me unique is my style and the twist I put on things.

What does the future hold?

“...what makes me unique is my style and the twist I put on things.

All of us at one time or another have been dealt a rough hand in life. 2016 was the absolute worst year of my life! Twice in that year my time on earth came extremely close to expiring. I had a heart attack on Easter Sunday, and later on that year nearly had a limb amputated. I am not letting this be known for any type of sympathy. What I am doing is letting people know that no one knows their future. I can say I am truly blessed to still be able to wake up every day, and with two feet. I have done things in life that I am not very proud of, I am no angel. I also know I have done some great things for people and our community. I have always tried to help when I can and be there for others. I believe in my situation, my good outweighs my bad. nice set of strong, defined arms, and a pair of hard, bulging pecs are great to behold on any guy. Yet there are other upper body muscle groups that are equally as important, not only for an amazing physique, but for day to day activities as well. Let's talk back. Here are my four top weight training exercises for sculpting that classic V-shaped back. This routine will also strengthen your back and keep it strong, limber and injury free! Try 3-4 sets of 812 reps and as always, adhere to proper form. Bent Over Barbell Rows: Begin this multi-joint exercise standing with your feet shoulder width apart, bend at the hips so your upper body is almost parallel to the floor. Bend your knees slightly and grasp a barbell with an overhand grip, hands slightly wider

by Tom Bonanti than shoulder-width apart. Lift the weight toward your abdomen, pulling with your back muscles first, your arms second. Squeeze your shoulder blades together at the top of the movement. Complete the rep by lowering the barbell to

uBent Over Barbell Rows

u Front Cable Pull Downs

starting position. Front Cable Pull Downs: Attach a long bar to a pull- down machine. Plant both feet flat on the floor with your knees secure under the pads (if available). Reach up and grasp the bar as wide as possible with an over hand grip. Sit and fully extend your arms. Lean slightly back, stick out your chest and keep your body still. Contract your lats as you pull the bar down to your upper chest. Squeeze your shoulder blades together when the bar touches your sternum, and then slowly return to the starting position. Seated Rows: Seated on the floor or on the seat of the machine, plant your feet firmly against the foot platform. Grasp the bar (preferably a small “V shaped bar). Keep your back straight as you lean slightly back giving the arms a nice stretch. This is the starting position. Now, pull the weight back and slightly upward to your diaphragm. Squeeze your shoulder blades together at the top of the movement, and in a

controlled fashion, return to the starting position. One Arm Dumbbell Rows: With one knee on a flat bench and your upper body mostly parallel to the floor, place your same-side hand on the bench for support. Grasp a dumbbell with your working hand. Contract your lat muscle to pull the weight up to your arm pit. Squeeze your back muscles at the top and slowly return the dumbbell to the starting position. Complete a set, then repeat this procedure on the opposite side. When working your back, or any muscle group, remember to breathe properly by inhaling during the easier part of the movement and exhaling during the more strenuous part of the movement. Start out with lighter weights and maintain good form all the time!

KENTUCKY LAWYER & BLOGGER

W

JOHN K. BUSH BY D’ANNE WITKOWSKI

hen America wakes up from the nightmare of the Donald Trump presidency – assuming we survive it, of course – we will be left with a country severely damaged by a president and a party who have no respect for democratic norms or American ideals. There are many villains in this plot: Trump, Mike Pence, Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, Jeff Sessions, Tom Price, Betsy DeVos. The list goes on and on. But even when most of these people are but hideous footnotes, Trump will have long lasting destructive power remaining in the courts. While Trump and the Republicans like to call Democrats “obstructionists,” there’s really no comparison when it comes to the Republicans during Obama’s presidency. McConnell is the greatest obstructionist in history. After all, he stole a Supreme Court seat from Obama. This, of course, allowed Trump to appoint the right-wing Neil Gorsuch to the highest court in the land. And Supreme Court appointments are a lifetime gig. That means you get to be a Supreme Court judge until you die or retire,

92 | Hotspots.LGBT

whichever comes first. Gorsuch is only 49. He’ll likely spend decades on the bench. Of course, Supreme Court appointments aren’t the only lifetime gigs Trump gets to hand out. Due to McConnell’s unprecedented obstructionism, Obama wasn’t able to fill many federal judge vacancies. More than 100 empty seats awaited Trump when he took office. And Trump is wasting no time appointing rightwing conservatives to those seats. According to Kyle Barry of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the appointments “foretell a Trump-stacked judiciary that would clear the way for constitutionally suspect executive actions, shield corporate wrongdoers from accountability, and imperil the civil rights of all Americans.” It’s no surprise that Trump, unqualified and incompetent, would appoint judges who are completely unfit for the bench. Which makes the appointment of Josh Bush, a Kentucky lawyer and blogger that Think Progress called “the Donald Trump of judges,” understandable, but no less inexcusable.

He told the Senate that of course he’d uphold Obergefell, just like he’d uphold Roe v Wade even though he has compared abortion to slavery.” Bush, who the Senate voted along party lines to confirm to a lifetime appointment on the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, is a longtime foe of LGBTQ people. And yet during his Senate hearing Bush claimed that, gee, he hadn’t given much thought to Obergefell v. Hodges, the case that made marriage equality the law of the land. “I have not had occasion to study this decision of the Supreme Court in light of any methodology of constitutional interpretation,” he said. Sure. I mean, Bush freaked out when the State Department under Hillary Clinton revised passport applications to include Parent 1 and Parent 2 instead of just Mother and Father (because, you know, same-sex couples who have children are a real thing) by bemoaning the “the nanny state – more precisely, a nanny Secretary of State.” But I’m sure the marriage equality decision wasn’t even on his radar. He told the Senate that of course he’d uphold Obergefell, just like he’d uphold Roe v Wade even though he has compared abortion to slavery. 27 LGBTQ rights groups wrote a letter to Senators asking them not to confirm Bush. “Mr. Bush’s disparagement of decisions protecting the right of individuals to make highly personal decisions – including the right to engage in private consensual adult relationships and the right to procreative

freedom – reveals a hostility to wellestablished fundamental rights of liberty, privacy, autonomy and selfdetermination that have been the lynchpin of legal progress for LGBT people,” the letter stated. And yet, Bush now has a lifetime appointment. Elections have far reaching consequences. 2018 is crucial. Vote. The L Word

Kevin Spacey

Showtime knows what you want. And because you're like us, you want – you have always wanted – more L Word. It was trashy, it was silly, it was like very few actual lesbians you know in real life, and it was glorious. Jennifer Beals knows this. So does Leisha Hailey and Kate Moennig. The three of them are working as producers on a revival of the series, currently in development at Showtime. Should it all go well and come to series – that's what “in development” means, btw; it could all disintegrate over the course of a lunch gone wrong – the premise for now is that Bette, Alice and Shane would still be living in Los Angeles, surrounded by a pack of fresh lesbians. Or maybe more of the original cast will come back, too. Who knows. It's all so very up in the air that it's almost jinxing to talk about it. But Beals recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the project and she took the words out of our mouth: “We are needed.” Yes,

Gore Vidal

“THE L WORD” REVIVAL IN DEVELOPMENT

they are. Start praying to the goddess, y'all.

KEVIN SPACEY IS (AND IS NOT) GORE VIDAL Author and public intellectual Gore Vidal died in 2012, and his legacy – in the late 1960s, before Stonewall, he calmly and defiantly declared that his homosexuality was absolutely normal on a notexactly-progressivelyminded Mike Wallace news special titled, The Homosexuals – has been in need of a good solid biopic

for some time. Now Netflix is shooting one now called Gore. Little is known about the production besides its director, Michael Hoffman (The Last Station), and its star, Kevin Spacey. But that star name is enough for now, because it raises some issues, not the least of which is the ongoing dance of denial Spacey has going with the press regarding his own sexuality. On the subject he's tight-lipped, he's playfully sarcastic, he's antagonistic, he's merely silent. He says what he wants, unless he

BARRY JENKINS IS GOING HIS OWN WAY The temptation for a filmmaker feeling the first flush of success – let's call that filmmaker Barry Jenkins, whose magnificent Moonlight won the Academy Award for Best Picture – is to take the next big paycheck. And in Hollywood, in 2017, the big paycheck often means joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, let's keep it real here, stifling your own creative vision and fitting yourself into the one-handed you by a corporate entity. But Barry Jenkins has other ideas. His next move will be to adapt the 1974 James Baldwin novel, If Beale Street Could Talk. Set in Harlem, the story revolves around a young engaged couple, with the

Barry Jenkins

doesn't want to talk about it at all. And now, like Queen Latifah in Bessie, he's playing a historical queer public figure while refusing to speak up about the absolutely normal. In the end, though, it's the performance that counts in art, and Spacey will be great as Vidal because he'll bring the author's prickly, agitated intelligence to the part. Just don't blame us for wanting a little more than that.

man falsely accused of rape. Baldwin, who was black, gay, and could never once be accused of going along to get along (see the incredible documentary about his life, I Am Not Your Negro, to learn more), would probably be very pleased to see his work adapted by the seriousminded Jenkins. And while we'd also be thrilled to see what he'd do with a superhero story, this feels just right.

TONY KUSHNER IS WRITING A PLAY ABOUT DONALD TRUMP In Tony Kushner's acclaimed '90s play Angels In America, there's a scene in which the closeted politician Roy Cohn reacts to his AIDS diagnosis with an infamous monologue. In it, he declares that “Homosexuals are men who know nobody and who nobody knows.” Well, it turns out Roy Cohn and a younger Donald Trump were quite close in the 1980s, call the former a shark-like mentor to the latter, teaching him all the worst possible lessons of public life. And now it also just so

happens that Kushner, the man who immortalized Cohn's true legacy, is writing a play about the current sitting president of the United States. It has no title, and there are no details to share, but it's happening, which means that we may yet see a definitive piece of art related to this person, one that is more substantive than a late-night talk show host's impersonation or blistering response on Twitter, from a playwright who knows very well how to contextualize history at its most mind-boggling. And why is he doing it? Call it a writer's challenge. The Daily Beast, quoting Kushner: “[Trump]'s the kind of person, as a writer, I tend to avoid as I think he is borderline psychotic. I definitely think that incoherence lends itself well to drama, but he really is very boring. It's terrifying because he has all the power, but without the mental faculties he ought to have. I think he is seriously mentally ill, and the fact that he is in the White House is very frightening.” We'll wait, patiently.

Romeo San Vicente has a very long memory.

NEED WOOD

By Woody Miller

YOHIMBE STIFF STUFF

H

ey Woody! I keep hearing about the sex-enhancing power of Yohimbe. I don’t have any trouble getting it up but I’d like better, stiffer, longer-lasting erections. Do you know anything about it? — Looking for more action

y

Hey, woody! I know this is a stupid question, but what do two bottoms do when they hook up? — Just curious

y

Dear Curious: Hair and make-up.

Hey woody! Why do people on Grindr profiles say stuff like, “if you can’t come up with something better than hello, keep moving.” I mean, what the hell else can you say when you haven’t met anyone! — Stumped

y

Dear Looking: Yohimbe (pronounced YO-HIM-BEE) is an herbal supplement made from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree. Its active ingredient is the alkaloid yohimbine, which until Viagra, was the only FDA-approved oral medication for impotence. Only a doctor’s prescription will assure you of actually getting yohimbine, thanks to the frauds in the herbal supplement business. It’s sold as an herbal extract in health food stores, but good luck trying to get a dose that actually contains the active ingredient. Because they’re not regulated, herbal companies aren’t under any obligation to put in the ingredients they list. Studies of products sold in health food stores found most contain little or no yohimbine when tested. So much for wisdom and honesty from the crunchy, birkenstock set. They get away with lies corporate America could never get away with, proving you don’t have to wear a tie and wingtips to screw the public. If you can actually get yohimbine, odds are that it will help. It’s been proven in clinical studies to increase blood flow to the penis. Its main problem is side effects. Yohimbe can cause elevated blood pressure and heart rate, dizziness, headache, skin flushing, anxiety, panic attacks and hallucinations. It should not be taken, under any circumstances, by

anyone with heart disease, kidney disease or anxiety. Because of its severe side-effects, the FDA classifies yohimbe as an unsafe herb. If you don’t fall into one of the danger groups, I don’t see any harm in trying it. But again, good luck getting the right dosage. The largest study showed the best results came with 42 mg of yohimbine daily over 2-3 weeks.

Dear Stumped: Whenever I run into a profile like that I say to myself, “Oh, f@&k you. I’m not your little monkey who signed on here to entertain you.” Imagine a great looking guy coming up to you at a bar who says “hello.” You basically throw a drink in his face and say, “Can’t you come up with something better?” And walk away. Ridiculous. That said, it never hurts to be a little creative. My favorite opening line? “You owe me .99 cents. Your pics melted the Snickers Bar in my pocket.”
