Sleepily sat on the seabed off the coast of Lanzarote, British artist Jason deCaires Taylor has created an incredible series of underwater artworks. Museo Atlantico, the first underwater sculpture museum in Europe and the Atlantic, consists of 40 eerie sculptures. Taylor’s known for creating similar installations in Mexico, the Bahamas, and more recently, the Thames.

Like many of his previous installations, Museo Altantico’s intended to spark serious international discussion. Motionless concrete figures representing refugees and selfie-obsessed tourists dreamily sit 15 metres under the sea’s surface.

Cape Town, South Africa There’s always something happening in Cape Town, but March is a particularly busy month for The Mother City.

Brimming with appealing attractions that dazzle and delight, now is the ideal time to visit the southernmost city of the African continent.

Since 2010, the annual Cape Town Carnival has wowed residents and visitors alike, with its extravagant procession of magnificent floats, vibrant dance routines and extraordinary costumes.

On March 12, shake your tail feathers and revel in all

the colours of the rainbow at this street party. The Mardi Gras-esque parade celebrates diversity, creativity and cultural understanding with a colourful convoy of fabulous floats and thrilling acts. This year’s theme is ‘Street Life’, and will bring designers, artists and entrepreneurs together to defy convention.

Start the following day in the right way and relish a refreshing morning jog along Sea Point promenade, hike over colossal boulders at Sandy Bay, or revel in a picturesque drive down the

coast to Cape Point. Organise a family picnic in Green Point Park or cycle around the historic Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Learn to surf off one of the city’s many golden beaches, tandemparaglide off Lion’s Head or abseil down Table Mountain.

This flat-topped ridge is often considered to be the headline act, but there are many other wondrous natural landscapes and abundant outdoor spaces to explore.

Andraya Farrag, Founder of BEDOUIN Having lived in New York during the formative years of her career, the Big Apple greatly influences this creative director’s design philosophy After a hard day’s travel, anyone jet setting to New York needs a good lie-in the next morning in preparation for a packed day of sightseeing. With this in mind, start your trip with brunch at Juliette in Brooklyn.

This establishment has a charming rooftop with a stunning view of the skyline. Their atmosphere is one of nostalgia and their philosophy is one of simplicity. Guests enjoy a great brunch menu, with dishes for everyone; from roasted banana stuffed French toast to smoked salmon benedict.

If you’re in New York for a short time, I’d start in East Village and enjoy a morning stroll down boutique-lined Bleecker 22

Street. Then head to the Chelsea Market and buy some Fat Witch chocolate brownies and a coffee. Walk along the High Line to take in the views of the city and the Hudson River. Williamsburg in Brooklyn is also a must-visit if you like sifting through vintage stores. For a spectacular sunset, go to Williamsburg Park, where you can enjoy beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline.

I must admit, however, that I think views from the top of the towering Rockafeller Center are the best in the whole city. You can see the iconic Empire State Building from one side and the vast expanse of Central Park on the other.

I’d stay at The Standard High Line; a sleek and modern 18-storey contemporary hotel with floor-to-ceiling windows so guests can enjoy sweeping city views; it’s also in a great location. If you fancy something with a little more character, I love The Jane in West Village. This historic building was built in 1908 as

sailors’ lodging and in celebration of its former self, the interior boasts a vintage maritime theme. There’s a real Wes Anderson-esque feel to it.

The fashion-forward should head to Dover Street Market. Hailing from London, this concept store is a haven for quirky high fashion in a unique and fun, albeit unusual, setting. If you prefer some peace and quiet, camp out in Washington Square Park with a good book, before grabbing dinner at Balthazar in Soho.

As you may have already gathered from my recommendations, New York is a city for walking. The route from the Dumbo neighbourhood in Brooklyn over the Brooklyn Bridge is fabulous – try to time it so you’re across the river just before the sun goes down. Afterwards, enjoy some late night shopping and grab a bite in the vibrant, cobblestone-streeted meatpacking district, before finding a humming speakeasy in the ever-charming West Village, to quench your thirst.

With nearly a decade of experience in the luxury travel industry, Rob loves nothing more than talking hotels and discovering destinations. His favourite country is Lebanon, his favourite city is Los Angeles, and his dream is to own a boutique retreat in the Italian Alps.

Q. Travelling with little tykes can be a chore; can you tell us some places that make it all worthwhile, once you finally arrive?

A. To me the friendliest family destination is Mauritius. The newly reopened Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok is a must, as the kids can be looked after from morning to night. For something fun for the adults too, then you could try LUX Belle Mare for its hospitality hidden treasures.

A destination that is becoming en vogue is Sri Lanka, with a handful of luxury beach hotels opening, all with amazing facilities for kids. The Cape Weligama, with its private pool suites, is the perfect place to relax: include a trip to the elephant orphanage in Kandy for the memories 24

that’ll last forever. Further afield, yet luxurious and affordable, is Bali, where direct flights take you to an island with an aura of harmony and relaxation. A. If you are looking for the ultimate Kids Clubs then some are a little closer than you may think. One that has impressed for many years is Anassa in Cyprus. Their Explorers Club is always among the best, and offers healthy cooked food as well as great games to engage young minds.

Should you want a full-family pampering, head to Cheval Blanc Randheli in The Maldives: here the Kids Club is a haven, with everything from pizza-making classes to swimming sessions, and all is taken care of so you can leave your children from dawn to dusk. (I’ve been reliably told it’s the children who get up early and ask to get the activities started!)

You can be guaranteed that globally, the best Kids’ Club programme is at the Four Seasons, as the consistency is high across

all properties, and they’ll personalise your stay in any city or resort.

Q. What are some destinations for families with teens, (who are harder to impress!)

A. Lots of cities nowadays are geared for multigenerational travel. Some cities even incorporate fun with the family, a key example of this being Hong Kong, with its futuristic feel, fun shopping and great cuisine. It sounds very grown up, but there are a host of things to do for all the family. Staying centrally in the sky-high Ritz Carlton is sure to impress those of all ages. Add in trips to the theme parks of Oceanpark and Disneyland, and you are onto a winner.

Over in Singapore, you can extend the Asia-exploration to include another awe-inspiring hotel, Marina Bay Sands, with its elevated pool, or the ShangriLa’s Rasa Sentosa to enjoy Universal Studios and the other island options that will entertain and impress the kids.

Of course if you want to travel that extra mile, why not really make it a holiday to remember with Business Class flights in comfort to Dallas. There’s a multitude of fun things to do: from watching the Dallas Cowboys to being a cowboy in old town Fort Worth, you can take in the best that the Lone Star State has for the whole family.

Ingredients are fresh and flavourful, served in the most basic and traditional form. I also always order the fresh buffalo mozzarella served with a crisp tomato salad, in addition to a mouth-watering lemon sorbet for afterwards; this is my favourite restaurant.

I consider this eatery to be the restaurant of the Himalayas. High-quality food is served from the Tibetan, Nepalese and Bhutanese region. Flavours here are intense, and dishes simple. The Tibetan platter and piro aloo with tingmo are also among my highlight dishes. The latter features flurry potatoes drenched in mustard, served with a steamed and layered bread.

The concept of YouYi Cheng is brilliant: the only thing you can order there is the hot pot. A fragrant and fresh broth is poured into a bowl which is fitted into every table.

You share the food with other diners at the table from the common dish, as tradition dictates in Chinese food culture. Not only is it delicious, the food’s very healthy.

Farzi Café, Gurgaon, India Order: Tempura fried prawns with nimboo-mirchi aire I’m proud to put my own restaurant, Farzi Café, on my list of all-time favourite eateries. It’s a modern Indian casual-dining restaurant. Be sure to try the smoked pathar ke kebab and wasabi walnut chutney during your visit. Expect excellent food, inventive drinks and fun music. I am a major New York fan after living there for several months in my 20s, and I travel back there at least once a month now that my shoes are stocked in Neiman Marcus (neimanmarcus.com).

Shopping wise, New York is the pick of all cities. I absolutely love spending the day on Madison Avenue. The Oscar de La Renta boutique there is amazing, and you’ll also find a fantastic store called Roundabout (roundaboutcouture.com).

It’s an overspill designer store that’s full of Chanel, Bluemarine and Dior. While in this part of the city I’ll treat myself to a few rose macaroons from the Lauderee store (laduree.com) at 864 Madison Avenue.

Of course, no shopping trip to NYC is complete without a walk around the beautiful and classic Bergdorf Goodman (bergdorfgoodman.com). Each visit I make a beeline for the Valentino section, one of my favourite designers.

I always spoil myself with a makeover in Sephora (sephora.com). Many people don’t know that some of the stores, like the one located at 555 Broadway in SOHO, have private rooms where you can pamper yourself. Using one of the consultants in Sephora teaches you so much about new products you wouldn’t normally know.

Whenever here I always stay at The London NYC (thelondonnyc.com). They even give me the same bedroom now that I’ve stayed there so often! However, I’ve recently discovered a super boutique hotel called The Surrey (thesurrey.com) on the city’s Upper East Side, which may just make me change my mind the next time I’m in town. It is full of Kate Mossinspired artworks and the drinks served are amazing – perfect post shopping spree.

Charles River

Along the Boston side of the far-reaching Charles River, which separates the majority of the city from Cambridge, is a three-mile enticing urban escape known as the Esplanade.

Featuring grassy knolls and pretty waterways, it stretches from the Museum of Science to Boston University Bridge.

It’s littered with public art, including an oversized bust of Arthur Fiedler, long-time conductor of the Boston Pops.

Paths are great for cycling, jogging or walking, as well as playgrounds and places to rent sail boats. If you’re lucky, you may even see the Harvard Heavyweight Crew Roster rowing down Charles River during college practice.

Universal Studios Orlando Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Universal knows how to stay fresh Old Favourite: Rip Ride Rockit On a video screen, choose your personal soundtrack that will boom out from built-in seat speakers. The music will vie with your screams for attention, as you are hurtled around a duo of 100pkh loops after being shot up an endless track to a height of 50m, 17 stories over Universal Studios. Like a rock star, your entire whirlwind is recorded (off-board), and you can edit it and add final directorial touches once back on terra firma; a real rock ‘n’ rollercoaster that will make your nerves dance.

Verdict: Sing when you’re whizzing.

The Newcomer: Reign of Kong Deep in Skull Island, surrounded by thick jungle, this is not merely a ride but a living, breathing adventure that will leave you waking up the next night in a sweat. Scary?

It is the most high-tech animatronics effort in the park to-date. Kong is your protector against prehistoric predators in this multisensory, 6-minute long mega ride. It is a fight for survival, untold dangers await, and you’re in the mighty ape’s kingdom, where the ride vehicle alone is 40-feet long. Your heart is sure to beat out of your chest, while The King obliviously thumps his.

Verdict: Keep Ann Darrow on speed-dial.

SeaWorld Dedicated to all things ocean, a theme park that’s educational and electrifying Old Favourite: Manta Ever wanted to fly? There’s no need for wings on this unique, face-down-and-floatyfeeling fantastic, one of the smoothest tracks in the world. You’re strapped-in yet suspended, arms dangling, as you skim head-first over the park below… with a 360° loop and plummeting 35m drop thrown in for good measure. Part Manta, part Superman, with thrills and splashes thrown in. The spectacular Stingray Lagoon awaits post-ride, to regain balance and admire over 100 of the animals gliding with more composure than you did.

Verdict: Eye-soar.

The Newcomer: Mako Hyper-coaster? Gulp. Sounds extreme already, plus it is named after one of the ocean’s fastest sharks. The ride is a mile long and puts you in the body and predatorial mindset of the shark, leaving you weightless and breathless. Mako will be the focal point of a themed-Plaza that will include an Underwater Shark Encounter. No inversions on this ride but plenty of thrills along a 200-foot-tall hyper coaster that reaches 73 mph along 4,760 feet of track.

Verdict: Bitten off more than you can chew.

Old Favourite: SheiKra 60m. A 90° drop. At 110kph. Your heart might even miss finding your mouth at that speed, on the fastest rollercoaster in sun-baked Florida (with a splashdown at the end to cool you off… or is it to bring you back to your senses?) For added drama, hit the park in summer when it stays open a bit later than usual, and you can tackle this ride in the dark. Named after a sharp-eyed hunting hawk which swoops in on its prey, this 972m-track devil was voted ‘Shameless Tease’, due to the hang it makes riders endure (for what seems a lifetime).

Verdict: Don’t look down. Just don’t.

Old Favourite: Space Mountain This ride has been an immovable force of theme park adrenaline rushes since 1975, and the ride is a concept endorsed by Walt himself. Darkness descends and it’s allsystems-go, as you sit aboard a rip-roaring rocket that blasts you through an energy tunnel into the deepest reaches of outer space – after pre-launch missions and a spot of interactive, astronaut-approved training, of course. If your kids are looking for their first dip into a big-drop thrill ride, this is the deep-space peak for them to conquer.

Verdict: No problem here, Houston.

The Newcomer: Cobra’s Curse Busch have added this serpent-inspired ride to their veritable animal cage of rides that include Scorpion and Cheetah Hunt.

Plenty of twists and turns await on this new addition for thrillseekers in Tampa Bay, as the Egyptian archaeological ride takes you through the cobra’s temple before vertically-lifting you face-to-face with an 80ft-tall snake icon, then backtracking, revolving, descending, spinning… to avoid fearsome fangs. At 40kph it isn’t lightningfast, meaning kids can scale these heights without being too rattled by the King.

Verdict: Sssssensational.

The Newcomer: Frozen Ever After Disney World news is dominated by the hotly-anticipated Star Wars Land that is under construction, but in the shape of this Frozen ride they have added a chilled-out voyage for 2016 that is enchanting, and sure to enthral your wannabe-Elsa. Your log ride drifts through a 3D special effects and animatronic-filled reimagined Norway, replete with Troll Valley and Ice Palace.

It is the most leisurely ride in our article, but being serenaded with hit tunes from the flick, it may also be the most enduring memory-wise, as you hum the bars of Let It Go all sun-soaked summer.

Verdict: Farewell, ‘It’s a Small World’ tune.

ady Georgiana Spencer married William Cavendish, the 5th Duke of Devonshire, on June 7, 1774.

There had been so much publicity about the highbrow engagement that the Spencers feared inquisitive onlookers would mob the church. Consequently, the couple married two days earlier than the official date, in the peace and quiet of a local parish. Only five people were in attendance. After all, eighteenth century weddings were private occasions.

The bride wore an ornate white and gold dress, with silver slippers and elegant pearl drops in her hair. On this, her 17th birthday, Georgiana became the wife of the most eligible bachelor in England, as well as one of the richest and highest-ranking ladies in all the kingdom.

The Duke’s property included the extravagant Devonshire House in London and Lismore Castle in Ireland, in addition to several other estates of comparable grandeur. Despite this impressive accumulation, Chatsworth House remained the elaborate jewel in his dynasty’s crown. One can only imagine Georgiana’s astonishment the first time her horse-drawn carriage flaunted through Derbyshire’s picturesque countryside towards Chatsworth Estate.

stone structure, some three storeys high, topped with a regal cornice and balustrade boasting commanding urns. The façade was a handsome design of double-height windows and fluted pilasters, each proudly showcasing the Cavendish family emblem of interlocking serpents. It must’ve been a thrilling sight, not unlike the glamorous Duchess herself. Her extrovert personality and wild fashion sense, which included

She was also an author and political hostess, who counted among her friends Prime Minister Charles James Fox, the Prince of Wales and the Queen of France: Marie Antoinette.

A youthful and naïve Georgiana had entered into marriage thinking that she would be a wife and companion.

Unfortunately, the Duke was innately old-fashioned and used to his bachelor lifestyle. Their nine-year age difference,

intensified by a gulf of misunderstanding, led to an unhappy union, as well as a highly publicised (and extremely uncomfortable) ménage à trois.

Chatsworth’s audacious history didn’t end – nor did it begin – with Lady Spencer.

The late Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, Deborah Cavendish and her siblings, commonly known as the Mitford sisters, whipped up more scandal than Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary Crawley. The vivacious set moved in the same circles as Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy. Oh, and Adolf Hitler, too.

With such stories of shocking debauchery bursting at the seams, it’s no surprise that the majority of Britain’s greatest homes have remained hidden from the public. However, Chatsworth Estate has been largely transparent, offering visitors tantalising glimpses into an elite life of privilege. Home to the current Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, the estate’s been passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family. Throughout the centuries, it’s evolved to reflect the interests of succeeding generations and features a variety of fun-fuelled family attractions.

The house contains artwork that spans 4,000 years, from ancient Roman and Egyptian sculpture, to masterpieces by

Rembrandt, Reynolds and Veronese.

Children are enthralled with the history of the estate and the colourful characters connected with it, as they browse through the Devonshire family’s vast collection.

Wandering around Chatsworth’s sumptuous rooms, one can almost hear the robust chatter of aristocratic guests, draped in diamonds and ropes of pearls, indulging in eleven-course meals; the grand dining table adorned with large vases of red geraniums and sparkling silver candelabra.

This provocative history has made the spectacular property a popular film set, and it’s been featured in several films and television series, including Kiera Knightley’s Pride and Prejudice.

There’s also plenty to discover in the 105-acre garden, including permanent sculptures, a Victorian rock garden and audacious maze. It’s impossible to miss the extraordinary centerpiece, a famous 300-year-old Cascade. Cheerful children in colourful swimsuits play in the water, while parents search the nearby kiosk for ice creams and mini Cornish pasties.

The neighbouring gravity-fed Emperor Fountain’s another impressive feature; throngs of delighted visitors squeal with excitement as water’s ferociously launched to a height of 60 metres. Chatsworth’s farmyard and adventure playground has a similar effect, having been a favourite among children of all ages since 1973. Who doesn’t love to pet ponies and lambs, or take a country trailer ride? Afterwards, savour a scrumptious afternoon tea at the decadent Cavendish Restaurant. Dainty finger sandwiches of smoked salmon and cream cheese await, as do freshly baked sultana scones with clotted cream and lemon posset.

A treasure trove of different sights, the surrounding region, known as the Peak District, is littered with ancient stone villages that are buried into timeworn creases of the dramatic landscape. Hillsides are scattered with lonely caverns and rocky outcrops that attract hordes of walkers and climbers each year. It has hills and valleys, gorges and lakes, stately homes and gritstone edges. Rolling across the southernmost hills of the Pennines, Derbyshire’s a paradise for family holidays.

Famous for its flamboyant Georgian architecture, Buxton is a 40 minute drive from Chatsworth Estate and has attracted tourists for centuries thanks to its natural warm-water springs. Nowadays, the town’s spectacular opera house, as well as its magnificent Grade II-listed pavilion gardens and tropical greenhouse, make for a wonderful day out with the family. The gardens originated as the private grounds of Buxton Hall in the late sixteenth century, and it’s widely believed that Mary Queen of Scots, while under house arrest, enjoyed 50

afternoon walks through the manicured flowerbeds with her ladies in waiting. They now host over a hundred events annually, ranging from farmers markets and bazaars, to folk dances and village fêtes.

Alternatively, drive a brief 12 minutes to Bakewell: Derbyshire’s most charismatic market town. Perched on the tranquil banks of the River Wye, it’s overflowing with heritage and tradition. Sink into an oversized chair at one of the many bijou tearooms, or spend the afternoon feeding

Renowned for its delectable puddings, in particular the Bakewell tart (a soft pastry shell filled with jam and frangipane), the annual food festival returns for a 5th year from April 30 to May 1. In the meantime, visitors are welcome at the local golf club and equestrian lovers are well catered for at Edwin Mosley’s Haddon House. Visit the ivy-draped Castle Inn for a cheese-smothered gourmet burger before heading to Monsal Trail: a disused railway line popular with family cyclists. If you have time, continue the track to Miller’s Dale, where viaducts boast a stupendous vista across the steep-sided valley.

Gallantly guarding the entrance to the menacing Winnats Pass gorge, Castleton is another delightful village. Winding streets accompany leaning stone houses, which shelter crisscrossing walking trails that disappear into the surrounding furrowed hills. High above the village stands the imposing ruins of Peveril Castle; built in 1086 for William Peveril, a favoured knight of William the Conqueror. Also famed for its deep-seated caverns, Castleton’s littered with eerie hidden chambers, all of which are accessible through flooded tunnels. The Blue John Mine boasts the deepest caves that contain the rare and precious Blue John mineral, which can be purchased in local jewellery stores.

From the splendor of Chatsworth to the thrill of a cable car ride, there are plenty of great activities for families to enjoy. Lush greenery, rolling valleys and barren mottled brown hilltops of high moorlands await visitors who are drawn to the Peak District National Park. The region boasts some of England’s most evocative scenery and will give your family a holiday to remember.

axiing from the airport, it’s evening over Tokyo. Your firstever view of the city reveals an architectural pile-up – a winking computer game with no apparent order. As if the whole thing had landed suddenly and the contents had shifted during flight.

You crane through the window to see its celebrated landmarks. Where is its Eiffel Tower? Its Sagrada Família? Then it hits you: you don’t know any Tokyo landmarks.

You only know you’ve been drawn to this place by an age-old fantasy of sushi and temples, glaring neon and geek shops. But why fret about famous monuments anyway?

When you’re on the plane flying home, trying to recall it all, it’s the experiences you’ll most remember. Here they are, moment by moment…

• New York Bar, 52 floors up. That firstgawp from on high. Tokyo is: charcoal outcrops of 21st-century Gotham, flashing away to infinity with white-and-red pinprick lights. The pianist goes into a Latino number. The beverages hit the spot and you hold on to the low rungs of the stool with your feet because it’s late, and already your mind is swerving in and out of processing Japan.

• Closing time. the singer drops Cole Porter’s Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye. Your last glimpse is over a city somehow familiar yet alien: Manhattan multiplied as though through a fly’s eye.

• Memorable first morning: waking in Palace Hotel Tokyo to a clear day, amplifying the rust-red of the trees in the park far below. You can see the Imperial Palace, all fort walls of stone hewn from the area of Mount Fuji. Low-eaved, it resembles an elegantly exotic chalet: Swiss-with-atwist. Tour groups quickly file past it under bright brollies, from up here as tiny as strings of buttons.

• Sip a breakfast glass of komatsuna – Japanese mustard spinach, juiced with honey and apple – on the terrace, among business folk wearing Prada. You’re by a moat that encircles the Imperial Palace.

Maples stoop demurely, as if curtseying.

Swans glide, leaving ripples.

• It’s Saturday, so mooch along Omotesando, fashion avenue, under patchy shade cast by elm-like zelkova trees. It being Tokyo, a passing VW van, covered in scraps of dogtooth fabric, sporting the sign ‘Free People’, blares ‘60s tracks. It’s all oddly like a long-ago day in ‘80s-designer Barcelona, with the Post-Modernist stores (Nike, Zara) – architectural explosions in glass and steel.

• Later in the afternoon, in Hama-rikyu Gardens, the Imperial hunting park, you’re a bit intimidated by the skyscrapers of surrounding Shiodome. Against a blue sky

they lean in, like otherworldly invaders.

To a soundtrack of duck-quack, gardeners on stepladders clip the wriggly black pines that overhang the lake waters. There are flapping cormorants, herons and a pretty half-wheel hump bridge. Nakajima-noochaya tea house is Frank-Lloyd-Wrighthorizontal. Shoe-less and cross-legged, you turn the bowl left and right, as instructed for the matcha-tea ritual. Its green-earth bitterness relaxes. So does sweet bean cake.

• It’s dusk over the cat’s-cradle zebracrossing in downtown Shibuya. Grab a ringside seat upstairs at Starbucks, where everyone’s holding iPhones, videoing the pedestrian dregs as the lights change. A last shopper hops among accelerating traffic, evoking a wildlife documentary. Green again and the wildebeest advance, checking gingerly for crocs, ultimately pouring across chaotically. Repeat ad infinitum. Above it all, Shibuya is the LSD Tokyo you imagined: bulbs in Vegas torrents, naked lifts gliding up a building, and tinny teen songs from a big screen.

• At the crack of dawn, for shock value, Tsukiji Fish Market merits a mosey-round.

It’s wild stuff – a catch can come from as far as India and the Philippines, frozen on board in liquid nitrogen. With tentacles and antennae emerging from tanks, all manner of monsters in shells, it’s not for the phobic or faint-hearted: a big, net-bagged octopus writhes in a foaming bucket – very Jules Verne; sacs of salmon roe resemble knobbly pink livers; ice-beds of tuna eyes look at you in rows, to be used for soups.

• Breakfast? Watch the decapitation of Japanese Imperial prawns at Sushi Yamazaki, a tiny mother-and-son restaurant inside the market. It’s more scrumptous than it sounds. After the chef cuts off the heads (which twitch), you eat the skinned, translucent body on rice, nigiri-style, and it pops on your teeth like bubble-wrap. Now the beheaded bits appear, smoking from a mini-grill. Hot and crunchy, they might be fried insects, and the brains have a bouillabaisse taste.

• Time to tackle Nakamise, Tokyo’s tacky alley of souvenir stalls, which leads to the red lantern of Senso-ji temple, floating like a monster balloon. (You’ll spot people posing for those illusory ‘I’m holding it up!’ shots.)

The seventh-century temple waylays your camera with its fairy-tale pagoda, but you’re here to get your fortune told. Follow the sound of containers being hand-shaken, each holding 100 numbered sticks. Pay, shake and pick, then take your ‘fortune’ from the numbered drawer. Unhappy?

Simply discard and try again.

• Lost in translation, a sign on a pathway leading from Senso-ji temple reads: ‘For privento a disease of fire, please don’t put cigarette in this trashbin.’

• Dinner in an izakaya – one of those noshoes Japanese taverns with wan lights, sunken tables and foot wells. Nana is a newcomer, high in the mall that occupies the converted Post Office building in Marunouchi. Kick off with yuba – chilled soy-milk skin, which approximates

cold cabbage on the tongue. Sashimi includes kinmedai (alfonsino fish), which is pearlescent-baby-pink, in folds, like grated ginger. You dine among jabbering salarymen, while below, through the windows, taxis mesmerise like Christmas lights, reduced to yellow, red, blue and green illuminated signs.

• Next day a reflected train, on raised tracks, wobbles in the panes of a smokedglass high-rise office in Akihabara – Tokyo’s ‘tech-geek’ centre. Facades pour cascades of billboard-neon over your eyes, but futuristic Akihabara began plainly, as the electricparts district, and still has warrens of bulbs, fuses and flex. In the shop Mandarake, you can buy manga comics and collectors’-item toys, served by a guy in a blond ponytail wig, a kilt with plastic trim, white tights and Mozart-y buckled shoes.

• Back in the street, huge continuousloop screens project the hits of shrieking ‘J-pop’ girls – or are they mice on helium?

Ad slogans holler wonderfully senseless English (‘Celestial Globe of your Heart’).

The Japanese signage is beautiful abstract art if you don’t speak the language – and it is even if you do, expats fluent in Japanese will tell you.

• The following morning, in search of peace, your guide for the day (crucial in Tokyo to book one) takes you to Nakameguro, strung along a quiet canal. It’s lined with brickyjutty apartments – a sort-of taupe-Lego Amsterdam. There are parked Porsches, clouds of cherry blossom in spring and stores galore. Step inside Bals Tokyo, for wobbly ceramics – the essence of wabi sabi: “From teachings, it’s the acceptance of transience and imperfection,” Beatriz, the guide, explains. “Beauty that is incomplete.”

• On that more spiritual note, next day is your big Shinto-shrine close-up: Meiji Jingu, in pine-green Yoyogi Park, dedicated to the first Emperor of modern Japan (1852-1912 and his wife. Priests in flowing kingfisher culottes pass along shaded ways of acorn and evergreens, under torii gates of hinoki (cypress), dark watercolour strokes on the sky. Infants totter in kimonos, here for a blessing. Emperor Meiji encouraged industries and supported technological development to modernise Japan. Hence huge displays of decorative barrels along the pathways, gifted by members of the Meiji Jingu Nationwide Sake Breweries Association: you’ll snap Pacific-wave motifs, and cherry blossom dancing on air.

• Penultimate Tokyo day: off to Shimokitazawa district, an easy train-ride from Shibuya. It’s ever so boho; even KFC has a cocktail bar, ‘KFC Route 25’. Yet there’s something groomed-Swiss about the cleanliness, grey-box architecture and pink flowers in pots on steps to front doors. The 61

sky above the narrow streets is etched with electric wires. Cafes abound and astound: small and perfect. Bear Pond Espresso has enough space for eight customers, plays Simon & Garfunkel and does lattes in jam jars. At Ballon D’essai Latte & Art, they’ll trace a cocoa sketch of Woody from Toy Story into your foam.

• Last day in Tokyo: venture beyond the heart of things. In Shibamata (a 50-minute train ride) lies the Japan of 50 years ago.

The little town is home to the temple of Taishakuten, its plinth carved with turtles, where you sit on benches drinking green tea, with bird-chirp, murmurs of conversing elderly visitors and sunlight on water pouring into a stone basin. Lazy grey koi carp circle and gape, breaking the surface with a pop-snap.

• Last night in Tokyo. High-rise Shinjuku is a rainbow canyon of molten illuminations.

You’re in a taxi heading for its shantyish clutter of old places, Golden Gai, Each joint sits about six patrons. Phone-booth-size La Jetée has a movie theme, and personal bottles labelled for those who love the place - devotees include great film directors such as Jim Jarmusch, Wim Wenders and Quentin Tarantino.

• Final morning, leaving Japan, that bittersweet last moment: beside the Skybridge leading to the plane is a photo of the aircraft-maintenance manager in charge, with the words: ‘I assure you a pleasant and comfortable journey.’ You join the queue to board and before opening the tape gates, the Japan Airlines ladies, waiting to allow you through, both bow.

• The Nobu restaurant at the Four Seasons juts out in the Corniche, and at 26,000 square-feet is the biggest in the brand’s portfolio. Other Michelin-star chefs with Qatari-culinary enclaves include Guy Savoy, Vineet Bhatia, Gordon Ramsay and Alain Ducasse.

“It’s not long-opened, but the Argentinian steakhouse at Shangri-La Doha, the brilliant Fuego, is already my go-to place for dinner. It’s the only place in town serving certified Argentine Kobe beef (if you haven’t yet tried it, you really should, as it packs an incredible flavour), and I love how the chef has introduced each dish on the menu, along with the story of the dish itself. I’d also recommend that no one leaves Doha without visiting the Museum of Islamic Art, which is an incredible building.”

• Souk Waqif was given a facelift in 2006, but its origins date back far further than that – at least a century. Traders would gather on the creek banks to buy and sell their wares back when Doha was just a humble village.

The adventurous one

After a hearty, huge American breakfast at Ric’s Kountry Kitchen, hit the highway. That convoy of 4x4’s overtaking on your drive out of the city are likely heading to Qatar’s popular Inland Sea or Sealine Beach, for a bumpy bout of dune bashing – hire a professional driver to deflate the tyres and navigate the hills, should you be reluctant to get behind the wheel. Staying on-sand, desert safaris are immensely popular. And while the Singing Sand Dunes won’t peak your adrenaline, they are worth hearing; Qatar has one of the 30 places in the world where the natural phenomenon of humming sand occurs. Outside of the vehicle, kayak through the mangrove plantations in Al Thakhira marina near Al Khor, climb 15m-high rock formations in Zekreet, to the west of Qatar near Dukhan, or take the plunge with a scuba dive, as the peninsular is surrounded on three sides by the glistening Arabian Gulf.
