JUMeirah BeaCh resideNCe Dubai’s very own urban beach community has a ‘something for everyone’ vibe with around-the-clock appeal Little more than a long stretch of sand dotted with the odd hotel just 15 years ago, today Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) is a hive of activity offering the best of beachfront fun and cosmopolitan city-style experiences in one great location. At its heart is The Beach, a hub for adrenalinefuelled water sports activities, family-friendly dining and popular retail stores that spill over into the area known as The Walk. This is home to an ever-growing community of international hotels, even more restaurants, and endless shopping opportunities. It’s easy to navigate thanks to the Dubai Tram loop that winds its way through JBR’s main thoroughfare. Plus, there are two Dubai Metro stations at either end. Once in the thick of things, it’s very much pedestrian-centric. Downtown Dubai The epic fireworks display at Burj Khalifa is one of the most-watched spectacles on the planet. To bag a space by The Dubai Fountain, you will need to arrive very early in the evening. Take Dubai Metro to avoid the traffic and road closures in effect from as early as 6pm. Alternatively, take a walk along the nearby Dubai Water Canal for a low-key celebration. Madinat Jumeirah Dubai’s Burj Al Arab puts on a brilliant year-end display and you can view it up close at Madinat Jumeirah. Enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants, such as Rockfish at Jumeirah Al Naseem – be sure to book ahead. Or, pack a picnic and head to Kite Beach for a different perspective. poken word poetry – poems experienced through performance – is actually nothing new. We’ve been doing it for thousands of years but it now has a cool new vibe, especially in Dubai. The local scene is an authentic reflection of the city and the diverse crowd it attracts. The emirate is a melting pot of different cultures and nationalities and, historically, there is a deep appreciation for literature and poetry. As such, poetry events have emerged as buzzing occasions for the whole community. The country’s leaders see great value in the art, which speaks volumes. As an Emirati poet, I feel very blessed that this is the case. Dubai is such a phenomenal city and has undergone an incredible transformation to become a success on so many levels. It drives those living here to want to do well too. For me, there’s no better city to live in and there’s nothing you can’t do – it may come as no surprise that I talk a lot about dreaming in my poems. When I first started performing I was fearful of how my words would be received, but the crowd here is very
supportive and welcoming. It’s the kind that will cheer you on if you make a mistake. Dubai plays a huge role in inspiring my poetry. From visiting Deira Fish Market as a child to wandering around Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, it’s difficult not to hit upon new ideas when out and about. My biggest influence, however, is the people I meet along the way. A lot of people associate poetry with the region but may not know how to experience it. I love meeting people who say they are not interested in poetry or that they don’t run in those circles, as it presents an opportunity to convince them otherwise. The open mic evenings that you can attend across the city aren’t about reading poems from a dusty tome. There is a diverse crowd and line-up of performers and we talk about so many different topics – I even have a poem dedicated to my relationship with food. It’s unexpected and it’s different. Dubai is a very cultured city and that can sometimes get lost in translation, but I urge you to come and try it. When you do, you’re sure to fall in love with it. That’s the power of poetry.

We arrived in Dubai in 2004 when my son Bailey was still young – he’s now 16. My daughter Ella, 7, was born in Dubai. It is an amazing place to bring up children. We have the desert and the sea on the doorstep and the safety aspect is a big bonus. On top of all this, I love the cosmopolitan vibe. Growing up in Lebanon, I was surrounded by Lebanese people so meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds is great. My children have friends from all over the world and they are very grounded. Whenever we go away on holiday they are always keen to come back. What would you recommend to families here on holiday? Head out to the desert to see it for yourself. Also, spend some time splashing around at Wild Wadi – my son loves it! In the evening, take a stroll around JBR and Dubai Marina and stop for a meal at The Maine Oyster Bar & Grill at DoubleTree by Hilton, or Ramusake Dubai, which is in the same hotel. The food is fantastic. Later in the evening, get a babysitter for the kids, get glammed up and head to Dubai Opera – the venue is astonishing. How do you spend quality time with your loved ones? My work schedule is extremely busy so spending weekends together as a family is very special. We do like going out on the water though, cutting through the waves in a speedboat. We also love going to the cinema – it’s one of my favourite things to do. Getting engrossed in a film transports me to another world. What are your kids’ favourite hotspots? In Dubai, there are always new places popping up where you can have a great time. Where do you dine out? I am a dedicated foodie and am spoilt for choice for amazing restaurants in Dubai. Zuma, Cipriani Dubai and La Petite Maison Dubai – all in DIFC – are longstanding favourites. I am also obsessed with Salt – a food truck at Kite Beach that sells the best sliders and fries. When I first discovered it, I ate it five days in a row and I still have a regular craving for it. I like it because it tastes fresh too. The wagyu beef used for the burgers is free range, grassfed and hormone-free. You can taste the difference. In March, I always go to the food festival Taste of Dubai, which takes place in Dubai Media City.

Where’s best for shopping? Level Shoes at The Dubai Mall – I always walk out with at least three pairs, as the selection is too tempting. City Walk is also great, as much of it is outdoors so it’s a very relaxing experience and you feel free to roam. In general, I like to support local designers such as Syrian-born fashion designer Rami Al Ali who has a villa along Al Wasl Road and Charbel Karam who once made me the most incredible gown I have ever seen. I recently treated my daughter to some clothing from the junior line by Roberto Cavalli, which can also be found at The Dubai Mall. Harvey Nichols – Dubai at
Mall of the Emirates is another great choice for kids’ clothing and accessories, as is Level Kids at City Walk. How do you stay active? The weather is bright and sunny all year round so it’s easy to stay active – even during the hot summer the kids can cool off by taking a dip in the pool. My daughter has started horse-riding every week and I recently decided to join her, which I am excited about. What do you do to relax? I don’t have much time to unwind as my work schedule is so busy, but when I do, I like to have a few beauty treatments at Maison de Joelle [there are three locations in Dubai, maisondejoelle. com], such as a facial peel and a cellulitebusting treatment. From relaxing on a sun lounger with a good book while soaking up the rays to building sandcastles with the kids and wave jumping in the surf, long hazy days at the beach make holidays to remember. The weather is perfect for beachgoers at this time of year and, thanks to its ever-growing coastline, the emirate is packed with sandy havens. Morning: If you are staying in a beachfront hotel (see page 26), it’s likely you’ll have access to a private strip of powdery white sand complete with watersports and ice cream cones. If not, there are plenty of stunning public beaches to explore. For a great view of Burj Al Arab, head to Black Palace Beach. Known as the ‘secret beach’ among locals, this beautiful spot is ideal for a serene morning by the sea. To get there, simply follow the pathway between the royal palaces at Al Sufouh. Afternoon: Once you’ve made the most of the morning sun, head to Kite Beach in Jumeirah where you can grab a spot of lunch from one of the novel food trucks or cafés. We recommend Park House (parkhouse.ae), a family-friendly homegrown business that whips up delicious and nutritious dishes even the fussiest eaters will enjoy. When the afternoon wind picks up, try your hand at flying a colourful kite. If the kids are still fidgety, duck into XDubai skatepark (xdubai.com/skatepark). It’s good for all skill levels, with banks, blocks and quarter-pipes to navigate. Entry costs from Dhs40 per day. Refuel with an ice cream before heading further along the coast to Kitesurf School Dubai (kitesurf. ae), which offers private kitesurfing lessons from Dhs350 per hour inclusive of equipment rental. Comprising four adventure zones, there is plenty to keep you on your toes. Two of the zones represent Cartoon Network and MARVEL, while IMG Boulevard and the Lost Valley – Dinosaur Adventure zones are original concepts. Among the most popular rides and attractions is Avengers Battle of Ultron, which puts you shoulder to shoulder with Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Captain America and the Hulk as they take to the skies to battle Ultron. If your head is spinning, take a breather by exploring the shops, which have enough superhero merchandise to keep birthdays sorted for a few years. Morning: Make a beeline for The Dubai Mall (thedubaimall.com) in Downtown Dubai, which is the largest and most-visited retail and entertainment destination on the planet. There, you’ll find more than 1,200 shops, including two anchor department stores – Galeries Lafayette and Bloomingdale’s – as well as toy haven Hamleys. Style mavens should take a detour to Fashion Avenue,

No prior experience is needed – read, no excuses! – as you can sign up for a tandem skydive and feel the thrill of free-falling at over 120 miles per hour while being secured to one of the expert instructors. Once you’ve pushed through the fear of jumping from an aeroplane, peel open your eyes for a falcon’s eye view of Palm Jumeirah. Evening: As dusk falls, venture out into the desert for a hair-raising dune driving experience. Taking part in watersports is a great way to burn calories while soaking up amazing views. Sea Riders (searidersuae.com) offers wakeboarding and wakesurfing lessons and sessions in the calm waters of Dubai Marina and Dubai Creek – the latter is my favourite location as it’s a historic and beautiful spot. You can grab a delicious breakfast at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club afterwards. You have to be reasonably active to try it, but even beginners can get the hang of it fairly quickly. Plus, you can treat the kids to a donut ride behind the boat. As long as they’re strong swimmers, it’s safe and lots of fun. Get pedalling. There is a buzzing cycling community in Dubai and a popular route to take is the 50 kilometre round trip from Al Qudra to Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & 38 visitdubai.com
Spa. Depending on your ability, it should take around two- to two-and-a-half hours to complete the (mostly flat) journey. You can rent some wheels and a helmet from the Trek Bicycle Store’s Seih Al Salam hire facility (trekbikes.ae), which is conveniently located at the Al Qudra Cycle Course and is open daily from 6am to 10pm. Set off just before sunrise to enjoy the glorious awakening of the desert – chances are, you’ll see oryx and camels roaming beyond the path. Paddle power. Hatta is an hour’s drive away, but it is one of the most picturesque spots for kayaking, with its rolling hills and the majestic Al Hajar Mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop. Hatta Kayak (hattakayak.com), at Hatta Water Dam, rents out kayaks so you can explore under your own steam and there are pedal boats for families. Stop by the nearby JA Hatta Fort Hotel (jaresortshotels.com) for a well-earned lunch. What’s SUP? With its calm sea, the Dubai coast is ideal for Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) – and the conditions are especially good during winter when there’s a little swell in the water.
Head to Surf House Dubai (surfingdubai.com), located in Umm Suqeim 2 along Jumeirah Beach Road, where you can hire equipment or take a lesson. You’ll be practising in a spot that has great views towards Burj Al Arab. It’s tough on the arms and you can kneel down on the board if it makes you feel more comfortable. It’s especially great for teenagers who will enjoy meeting the local surfing community. Beach balls. Try your hand at volleyball on the sand at Kite Beach (kitebeach.ae), which has a number of courts available to use. The sport is really inclusive and a lot of fun. Plus, it’s great for all-over fitness, as moving around on the sand means your muscles are always working. Alternatively, there is a great little fivekilometre running track that leads all the way to Sunset Beach. Aim to jog there and back in time for a delicious lunch at Park House (parkhouse.ae). The kids can scoot alongside. Although falcons are, not strictly speaking, native to the UAE, it is the country’s national bird. Needless to say, Emiratis adore them: flying them, training them, racing them and watching them. These sharks of the sky are intelligent, ruthless hunters that can fly at speeds up to 390 kilometres per hour (the falcon is the fastest animal in the world), with such keen vision that they can see small prey from three kilometres away. The epicentre of city life long before Dubai embarked upon its coastline expansion, a wander through Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood and along Dubai Creek is like taking a step back in time Get set for your walking adventure by fuelling up on a cup of local ‘karak chai’ – a strong tea blend with a dash of milk and spices – at the charming Arabian Tea House on Al Fahidi Street. Then head out and turn left to enter the labyrinthine lanes of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Part of the attraction of this atmospheric district, which showcases the traditional way of life in Dubai from the mid-19th century until the 1970s, is simply meandering through the narrow lanes. You’ll discover small museums, art spaces and cafés housed in traditional L-shaped homes made from gypsum, coral and limestone and topped with a distinctive wind tower. Continue in the direction of Dubai Creek towards Al Musallah Road to reach Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU). With the aim of providing visitors with a greater understanding of local culture and traditions, SMCCU also affords guests the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Emirati breakfast, lunch, or dinner as part of an engaging Q&A session. Next, turn left to follow the sandy lane buttressing the simple but elegant Diwan Mosque, part of the Ruler’s Court complex, and stop by XVA Art Hotel. The Instagram-worthy space features a stunning courtyard and contemporary art gallery as well as a popular vegetarian café. Another left turn takes you towards Ali Bin Abi Taleb Street and the winding path to the Textile Souk. Walk along the warren of small shops and stalls and engage in friendly bartering for colourful fabrics and kitsch souvenirs. From here, turn right onto 34th Street and follow 3A Street to reach Saruq Al Hadid. This recently opened museum displays an impressive haul of over 900 objects unearthed from a centuries-old archaeological site in the depths of the desert. The vendors here are some of the best in the business and many can create a bespoke piece for you upon request. Retrace your steps to make your way to the Spice Souk. It’s easy to find – just turn right onto Baniyas Road and follow the aroma of cardamom, turmeric, dried lemons and rose petals. You’ll end up amid storefronts piled high with bulging sacks of spices for sale. Lastly, head left to Old Baladiya Street to reach Baniyas Road and walk towards

Discover a selection of the iconic structures that characterise the city’s constantly evolving skyline
For modern architecture enthusiasts, Dubai is a living, breathing exhibit. At every turn, there are creative, cuttingedge designs and structures to set your sights on, so pack your camera and head to your first stop – Emirates Towers. Opened in 2000, the glistening, equilateral triangles are among the most recognisable skyscrapers in the world. The two towers (one for offices and the other a hotel), are connected by a central podium called The Boulevard, which is home to various high-end stores, boutiques, restaurants and salons. Once you have had your fill here, head next door to the urban maze that is Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). Walk underneath The Gate building and turn around to capture the perfect photograph looking back at Emirates Towers framed inside its central void. You can easily lose an entire day in DIFC’s village of restaurants, cafés and art galleries, where high-flying financiers rub shoulders with art enthusiasts and foodies – all within a stunning contemporary architectural setting. If you like fine dining, head to Zuma for Japanese, Roberto’s for gourmet Italian, or La Petite Maison for French fare. For art, check out Ayyam and Cuadro to browse some of the region’s finest artists. Exit DIFC onto Al Sa’ada Street and head towards Emirates Towers Metro Station, where you can take a quick
ride to Burj Khalifa/The Dubai Mall Metro Station. Disembark and walk towards Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard for a stroll along the wide, elegant, palm-lined sidewalks (think Paris meets LA) all the way to your next stop – Dubai Opera. Designed by Janus Rostock, the iconic dhow-shaped building completes the urban nucleus of Downtown Dubai. Situated on the foreshore of the impressive The Dubai Fountain with views of Burj Khalifa, the 2,000seat opera house has hosted top class international performances including Placido Domingo and Les Misérables since opening in August 2016. Turn right on Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard to reach the record-breaking Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest tower. Opened in 2010, it is three times as high as the Eiffel Tower. There are a number of great places to sit back and gaze at the 828-metre-tall tower, including a throng of restaurants on the second floor of Souk Al Bahar (go in the evening so you can also catch a few

If you still have the energy, you can walk the six-kilometre-long loop along the canal. For a more relaxing tour, hop on a ferry from the Canal station and end your evening with a cruise along the waterway.

With seven kilometres of walkway circling the stunning Dubai Marina, there is no better place to experience the high-octane, cosmopolitan vibe of this lively, effervescent city Dubai Marina, the beating heart of new Dubai, is a constant bustle of expats and visitors, restaurants and shopping, and business and pleasure. By day, this sun-soaked metropolis is alive with activity, all centered around the stunning waterway, complete with luxury yachts and vibrant entertainment. By night, the skyscrapers twinkle, as restaurants, nightspots and retailers welcome a flow of fun-seeking guests. Whether travelling by metro or taxi, Dubai Marina Mall is easy to get to, which makes it the first stop on our roaming exploration of the area. First unveiled in 2008, the waterside shopping district boasts more than 130 restaurants, retailers and services over four floors, including the latest collections from fashion brands including Ted Baker, BCBG Max Azria, Sephora and Karen Millen. If you’re feeling peckish, go native with some Arabic coffee and dates at Bateel, or tuck into Emirati-style grills and seafood at Burj Al Hammam. Take an escalator to the second floor and follow the passageway to The Address Dubai Marina – a five-star hotel with a chic, urban feel. Dubai Marina is one of the first and largest of its kind waterfront developments in the region, with a canal spanning 3.5km. twisting-turning Cayan Tower. When you’re ready to move on, head to the promenade level of the marina itself, where luxury yachts and speedboats juxtapose majestic, traditional dhows. If you fancy a break from walking, the nearby Byky Station rents out bikes for just Dhs20 an hour. Retrace your steps to the left side of Marina Mall and follow the esplanade’s curve around to Pier 7. It is an ever-popular spot with those who want to spend a few hours catching up over a meal. view of the marina, walk over Al Sayorah Street Bridge, from which you can see the expanse of the winding waterway stretched out before you, fenced in by the gravity-defying skyscrapers. From here, the exciting JBR neighbourhood and beachfront is just a minute’s walk away, where you can continue your exploration, or stop in at one of the many eateries to take a break and plan your next Dubai adventure.

Find out what happens when old meets new in this fascinating tour, which will acquaint you with Dubai’s burgeoning public art scene What better way to start off an experience of ‘the old meeting the new’ than at Al Khazzan Park. This lovely little patch of green, recognisable by its white and blue, 40-metre-high water tower built in the 1980s, has become an urban oasis within the ever-evolving city. Indeed it is the first in Dubai to be fully powered by solar energy. Its café, Inn The Park, offers delightful dishes and drinks and an open-air library, stocked with books and magazines that you can read over coffee and cake. Just over the road is the all-singing, alldancing City Walk. Surrounded by LED screens and bustling with activity at all hours of the day, this buzzing destination seamlessly blends entertainment, shopping and dining, alongside boutique hotels and chic residential apartments. The area is also home to the Dubai Walls Project, where 15 of the world’s bestknown urban artists have made their mark on the city’s eclectic art scene. The walls of games arcade Hub Zero, for instance, feature the work of American contemporary artist Ron English, showcasing his signature POPaganda style. Take a few minutes out from the tour to go inside and indulge your inner child with laser tag, 4D cinemas and a virtual arena where you fight off zombies – the only virtual reality experience like it in the world. Turn left out of Hub Zero and circle the central plaza to view Beau Stanton’s City Walk

Keep your eyes open for installations by acclaimed international artists, including photorealist pioneer Case Maclaim, who crafted a close-up of an Arabic coffee jug, and German artist 1010’s 3D mural, Hole in the Wall, which symbolises the country in shape and colour. At the beach end of the street, the new Etihad Museum carves a majestic shape against the sky and, as it was built on the site of Union House, where the treaty that established the UAE as a country was signed in 1971, it is a fitting end to the tour. The picturesque pedestrianised beachfront of Jumeirah begs a leisurely evening stroll and with myriad culinary treats dotted along the route, you can embark on an epicurean adventure Your delicious journey kicks off at Kite Beach, in Jumeirah 3, which is at the centre of the 14-kilometre-long corniche. This particular stretch of beach is blessed with strong winds and waves, making it popular with kite-surfers (hence the name), people flying kites and also seagulls (watch them surf the air currents around the nearby mosque). It is also home to one of Dubai’s newest foodie hotspots. With a wide range of decent food outlets all positioned around a pretty outdoor courtyard, there is everything from salads at the trendy Park House and German bratwurst at Smart Brat, to gourmet coffee at Dallmayr and healthy fruit-based ice cream alternative Wanna Banana. Kite Beach’s most well-known food outlet, however, has to be Salt. The homegrown burger brand, which single-handedly triggered the food truck revolution in the UAE, serves up delicious sliders with its own signature sauce with novel options, such as the Cheetos-stuffed chicken burger and the Lotus cookie milkshake. Once you’ve had your fill, head west along the path in the direction of the Burj Al Arab for about 25 minutes until you get to Umm Suqeim Fishing Harbour. Although authentic-looking, the harbour development was built just a few years ago to cater to the ever-growing fish market trade. A huge bonus to the local community has been the pretty restaurant and café community that blossomed within it. If you like spice, pull up a seat at Bu Qtair. This restaurant started life as a hole-in-the-wall outfit, feeding the hungry fishermen who were sailing back in at sunset. However, it quickly became a favourite among local and expat residents, giving it the impetus to evolve into the famous restaurant it is today. Pick your prawns, fish or squid from the counter, where it gets spiced and fried, before being delivered to your table with Indian-Emirati curry sauce, dhal, rice and warm paratha bread. omething spectacular has arrived in Dubai. It has the power to astound, amaze and excite, is unique to the emirate and has already joined the growing list of must-have experiences in the city. Welcome to La Perle – the region’s first permanent show. Opened in August, the live aqua show, which takes place in a hi-tech, purpose built theatre in Al Habtoor City, is the hottest ticket in town. Featuring worldclass acrobats diving from a height of 25 metres and ‘flying’ around the auditorium on high-powered winches at speeds of up to 15 kilometres per hour, it is a sight to behold. But you’d expect nothing less from legendary artistic director Franco Dragone. As the force behind an impressive list of sell-out spectaculars such as Celine Dion – A New Day, Le Rêve in Las Vegas and The House of Dancing Water in Macau, Franco has pulled out all the stops to ensure La Perle raises the bar for entertainment in the region. During the show, water takes a pivotal role – all 2.7 million litres of it. Watch in wonder as the stage transforms from dry to wet and back again in a matter of seconds. It is a visual and emotional experience that, in the words of Franco, the show’s founder, “will ignite the heart and soul of everyone in the audience and will have people sitting on the edge of their chairs”. “I first started working with water when I directed the show O in Las Vegas,” he reveals. “Initially, I was scared to work with water but, in fact, the water helped me to calm down because you have to follow the water. The water flows – you have to become the water and understand it.”

As well as the water element of the show, La Perle presents a breathtaking fusion of artistic performance, creative imagery and groundbreaking technology. The narrative takes inspiration from Dubai’s rich cultural past, vibrant present and aspirational future. As Franco explains: “In Dubai, history is still being written and a story is being told. Dubai is the laboratory of the future. It’s where the world meets.” Bringing the vision to life has been years in the making. “When I begin to work on the show, I look and listen and try to emerge myself in the region and into the eyes of the people,” says Franco. “This is an audacious adventure. a bad seat in the house thanks to the cleverly designed auditorium that has just 14 rows, with seating curving 270 degrees around the aqua-stage. Each and every audience member can enjoy an intimate and completely unique perspective as the awe-inspiring action unfolds. Indeed, as the stage transforms, a visual feast of hi-tech 3D projections transports the audience to new worlds. “It incorporates the most advanced technology that exists in theatre,” says Franco. “It is not possible that the audience will not be moved by this show. They will see the culture of the region – but seen from today.” The show calls upon the skills of an international cast of 65 leading artists
who perform a series of near-superhuman aquatic and aerial stunts during the 90-minute spectacle. Together, they will stage an impressive 450 shows a year. If you’re finding it a challenge to imagine, take it from Franco himself, who describes the show as “sophisticated and mainstream – not two words you often hear together”, “accessible to all” and “emotional”. In essence, it is as inclusive as it is enthralling and thrilling – with a dramatic twist at the end. “The story builds on the past, respects the past, but focuses on the future,” he says. “I have the ambition to say it will be the synthesis of all that I have done before. It’s something that will call you back again and again.”

To prepare for the show, La Perle’s 65-strong team of championship-level artists trained six days a week for 10 months at the largest sound stage in the Middle East at Studio City. There, they were able to practise the aquatic and aerial stunts on a replica stage, allowing championship divers to dart like arrows into the water and trapeze artists fly and swing their way around the venue. Hailing from 23 different countries, the artists are all united by one common goal – to create and bring La Perle to life. Along the way, they have not only learned to live together, but to train and trust each other implicitly. Lydia Gomez, from Spain, who is a flyer in the show, explains the importance of staying focused. “I’m in the hands of the ‘porters’ – the guys who catch me – so it takes a lot of trust. When we’re learning new tricks, or you have only just met your porter, it can be nerve
wracking. In fact, I’m nervous every time I fly – it’s important because it means that you always stay focused. I’ve fallen before and had to have surgery on my shoulder. It’s part of our work. To endure pain is part of our job. I love seeing it all come together. It’s like a birth. It’s a creation that every one of us is a part of, so we’re all so passionate about it.” Julian Zazzaretta, assistant technical director is tasked with ensuring the show runs smoothly and safely. “There’s a strict chain of command and everyone is very clear as to what their role is. It has to be this way because there’s no room for even the slightest error. There’s a vast technical team in place, including flight directors, pool technicians and computer programmers, all working on the equipment. For example, the bungees and hybrid straps are all made here [in Dubai] and are made in such a way that they allow for static bounces and circular moves. We have a trampoline

that we’ve adapted into a conveyor belt to create the illusion of speed. Under the water is a whole other world.” The common end goal is to bring the Dragone vision to life. “Franco is an amazingly inspirational director and subsequently he turns to us to inspire him,” says Murilo Galves from Brazil, who specialises in diving. “He’ll do workshops when he asks anyone to come up on stage and show him something. It can be anything – a dance move, a weird figure. If he likes it then it will go into the story as part of the choreography. So there are many parts of the show that are your signature. This means we all feel that we are part of the creation. It makes us feel very proud.” La Perle takes place twice a night, five days a week from Tuesday to Friday at 7pm and 9:30pm, and Saturday at 4pm and 7pm. Tickets start from Dhs400. dubaicalendar.ae

What does your job entail? It’s my job to maintain the original integrity of the show that Franco Dragone creates and to ensure it has the same ‘wow’ factor for years to come. A person who is amazed one year must be equally amazed when they return five years later. tell us about the cast. What’s interesting is that the cast is from 23 different countries, they’re aged from 18 to 35, and they come from different backgrounds and different cultures. But what all these 65 people have in common is what they’re passionate about. This unites them. You do not have to speak the same language to be passionate. You do not have to be the same religion to be passionate. They all share the same dream. This is what makes us a family. We’ve all left our homes to come to Dubai to create something that’s never been done here before. You’ve worked with Franco Dragone for many years, what’s special about him? He’s an innovative director and when you ask any of us: “Why did you come to Dubai?” there are many reasons, but we are all gathered here because of Franco and we are very thankful for this opportunity to work with such a great artist. Franco chooses every member – he likes to handpick the excellence because he’s going to create a beautiful picture out of all of them. He starts with a blank canvas and he looks at each of their strengths and sees where they fit into his vision. He looks to the artists for inspiration, so everyone feels a part of the process. For sure he will always create something better than he did before because he is always learning. Why did you take the opportunity to move to Dubai? Coming to Dubai was obviously a major attraction – not only because of the attractions and the culture, but most significantly because what we are doing here has never been done before. What’s different about this show for you? Water. It’s a unique element working with water. The artist is going to do a dive from 25 metres into the water. Timing and precision is crucial. This is another aspect that creates suspense. There’s a whole underwater world – I don’t want to talk too much about that, as it will spoil the magic. Water brings huge challenges but the rewards are grand.

hose with a head for heights will be lining up to check out the spinning centrepiece of the new man-made Bluewaters island development: Ain Dubai – the world’s largest observation wheel – is already more than halfway completed. Set to be over 210 metres tall once finished, Ain Dubai will eclipse Las Vegas’ 167-metre-tall High Roller and Staten Island’s planned 190-metre-tall New York Wheel. Around 9,000 tonnes of steel is being used to construct the giant Ferris wheel – that’s almost 25 percent more than was used to build the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Located just off the coast, facing Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR), its grand scale will transform the face of the beachfront skyline, and is sure to become an instant hit among fun-seeking residents and visitors alike. Once onboard, those with a head for heights will be able to enjoy panoramic views towards Palm Jumeirah and the entire Dubai Marina area, as well as along
the coast to Burj Al Arab. On a clear day you may even be able to spot Burj Khalifa in all its shining glory.
